NORTHLAND CHILD AUTHOR RELEASES SECOND BOOK

J

ust a year after publishing her first book, St Francis Xavier pupil Madison Macmillan has hit the book shelves again – and there is more to come. The eight year-old has released her second book – ‘The Good Baby and the Hairy Monster’ – and will again donate a portion of sales to the Northland Rescue Helicopter Service. Madison, an ambassador for Northland’s Rescue Choppers – one of New Zealand’s busiest air ambulance services - donated $750 from the sales of her first book ‘The Good Baby and the Bad Hippo’ in 2018. She has teamed up with Whangarei firefighter and illustrator Adam Anderson to breathe life into the Hairy Monster. Anderson is now underway with illustrating more books in the series with Madison currently penning her sixth Good Baby storyline and she says has plans for more. “It is very exciting having another book published. I love writing and having fun writing adventurous stories and it is nice to see other people enjoying my books,” says Madison. “I also like that the Good Baby is very funny and has so many curious adventures and experiences in lots of places.” Although it is the first time Anderson has illustrated a book, he is keen for more.

“It has been great fun bringing my view of Madison’s story to life. The Good Baby character has a unique view of the world. She’s the product of an eight year old’s unconstrained imagination,” says Anderson. “It’s a great character to draw because it’s no big deal that she lives in a cave but owns a steam-punk telescope. That’s just how it is and kids love that. The best kid’s stories have the least rules.” The Good Baby and the Hairy Monster is selling for $10 at Kamo Books and Gifts, Coalies, Milk and Honey, Otaika NZ Post Shop, Precinct Café and Woodys Winners – all passionate supporters of the Northland Rescue Chopper Service.

AVENUES EDUCARE

A

venues EduCare was the first early childhood centre in Whangarei. It is a Community Based centre which is governed by a committee of parents and run by a centre manager. Formally known as Northland Reidential Nursery and Crèche it has a great history in the community. We take children from birth to five years and have separate areas for our infants, toddlers and young children. The educators at Avenues EduCare believe quality relationships are important and value the partnership educators create with parents/whanau and their children. We endeavour to work collaboratively with families to enrich children’s learning and development. We believe positive communication between parents/whanau is important for this partnership to develop and grow and make every effort to provide a welcoming environment for children, parents/whanau, caregivers and visitors. At the beginning of this year we had our visit from ERO some of the feedback was as follows: • Children are supported well to settle at the centre, and to communicate confidently with others. They understand that their ideas are valued, and develop a sense of themselves as capable learners. They freely explore both the inside and outdoor environments. • Leaders have intentionally created conditions that enable teachers to enact the centre’s philosophy. Mutually trusting relationships among children and with teachers are evident. Teachers engage in meaningful conversations with children, supporting their wellbeing. Children have opportunities to participate in tuakana/teina interactions and play cooperatively with each other. • We were also commended on our high adult to child ratios and that some of the staff had been at the centre for 10 or more years. This year the committee organised a movie fundraiser to raise funds for a new sandpit cover and we are also looking at some new shade sails to give some more shade to our outdoor area. The children continue to enjoy, maintain and explore this area that we, as a centre are very

WAS

proud of. We are also looking at developing a nature program for our 4 year olds in the near future. We also secured funding to finish putting Autex in the infants area and the sleeproom, this is noise lowering material and makes a big difference within the building. Our Infants and Toddlers are nurtured in a separate area to the Over Two’s but they still spend some time together throughout the day. Older siblings are welcome to visit younger ones and vice versa. They participate in a range of age appropriate activities throughout the day according to their interests at the time. Children also experience outings in the community including excursions to shows at Forum North, visits to local rest homes and our under two’s regularly walk to Mander Park and Coronation Reserve. We also enjoy visits from the community including Fire and Police and this year we have had several sessions with the Kapa Haka sisters to help strengthen our knowledge in Te Reo, Waiata and legends. Staff participate in regular professional development, they all like to keep up with the new documents and ideas that are being introduced on a regular basis.

s we begin to prepare for our annual Christmas Party at Kingdom Kidz we reflect back on the year that was. We celebrated Samoan Language week We wore green for St Patrick’s day and we had an amazing Teddy Bear’s picnic. We studied about our incredible insect world and learnt about the importance of fire safety. We are thankful to our local fire department for helping us run the fire wise programme and for bringing the fire truck to us for a visit. We held a memorial service for Anzac day and created our centre treaty for Waitangi day. Matua Rod visited us every Wednesday and helped us organise an unforgettable Matariki Whanau evening where the children sang waiata and performed the show “There was a Princess long ago”.It was a privilege to be invited to the Matariki celebration and Noho experience at our local Pehiaweri Marae. We celebrated Samoan language week by learning songs that one of our Kaiako sang when she was little. We shared a drawing of our aiga/family and made them into tapa cloth to make a huge story of our Kingdom Kidz aiga/family. Our children participated in cross country and many goals were set and conquered. It was great to see the children racing in teams, cheering each other on and supporting peers. To celebrate Diwali we made red lanterns and listened to some songs. We have been learning about the animals around us and have the pleasure of welcoming Luke and Bulga the horses

that belong to one of the kaiako. To help animals in our community we also participated in cupcake day, baking cupcakes to help raise money for the SPCA. Our centre sheep have had 3 babies and we have welcomed Ava the kitten this year. Some of our older children enjoyed a bus trip around Whangarei on transport week as well as a walk down to the Whangarei falls to reveal our flag for Maori language week. As the year draws a close we are excitedly practicing for our end of year production and our trip to sing at Forget me not adult day care. At Kingdom Kidz we provide an environment where children learn different ways to be creative and expressive and where children develop and extend their learning dispositions. We are a fun enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and experienced team of educators, who are passionate about providing families with high quality education and care. The early years are the foundation for person’s future education! We recognise the utmost importance that early childhood has on ech child’s academic career henceforth. We are situated in Glenbervie on an expansive and beautiful natural outdoor environment, with an abundance of animals for the children to engage with and plenty of opportunities to utilise our outdoor classroom. With summer approaching we are looking forward to plenty of water play, picking summer fruit and rolling down the grassy slopes of our orchard.

BACK 2 NATURE CHILDCARE

B

ack2Nature Childcare is a homebased service that has educators based from Pakaraka in the North, to Mangawhai in the South. We offer quality early childhood education where tamariki are cared for in the family environment of an educator’s home. It is a year since Back2Nature expanded, and 2019 has been about settling in an awesome new team of educators and mentoring teachers, and creating a dedicated office space for administration staff. Mentoring Teachers support all our educators by visiting regularly and helping plan for children’s ongoing growth and development. The Mentoring Teachers also provide professional development workshops for educators, support with Early Childhood Education training, and run the weekly Nature Days and playgroup where there are further opportunities to get to know the tamariki. This year Back2Nature Childcare also celebrated its 5th birthday, braving the Winter wind to gather at Lake Waro in Hikurangi for celebration and cake. Having a nature based philosophy means experiencing nature in all its forms, as they say…”there is no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing”! So, rugged up in wet weather gear or wearing our Back2Nature bucket hats in the Summer heat, you will see our tamariki experiencing Northland’s awesome natural spaces on our regular ‘Nature Days’, or out and about with their educators. The low ratios mean educators can respond spontaneously to children’s interests, or to what is happening in the community, such as the whale stranding near Ruākaka a few months ago. Several of our educators took their tamariki to be part of the community effort, to be close to these magnificent creatures, and to experience the tikanga and protocols around the stranding. What a priceless learning experience! If you would like to find out more about

The Northland Kindergarten Association (NKA) currently has 22 wonderful kindergartens each with a unique character and feel that mirror the community and environment in which they are situated. We have kindergartens spread between Kerikeri in the mid-north to Ruawai in the heart of the Kaipara. All NKA kindergartens offer the 20 ECE hours. Our centres encourage and provide the opportunity for parents and Whānau to be part of the experience that only kindergartens can provide for our

children. Each kindergarten has a fully trained teaching team and a ratio of 1 teacher for every 10 children. The NKA provides the most comprehensive ECE available in New Zealand at present, including specialist services such as: • Speech & Language Therapist to support any aspect of children’s communication • Pou Whakarewa Tikanga Māori (Māori Advisor) to enhance the bicultural practices within the NKA and the individual kindergartens.

3 1. We have many intimate spaces for children to use their imaginations. 2. Social skills are fostered so that friendships and strong relationships are developed. 3. Block building provides opportunities for team work and problem solving. 4. There are many opportunities for developing creativeness.

WHANGAREI CHILDCARE CENTRE

T

ucked away in the middle of town is a very special place with perhaps the best outdoor space of any local early childhood centre. The centre was the first purpose built childcare centre in Whangarei back in 1975 and several generations of the same families have passed through its doors and enjoyed its service. As a not for profit community centre all any proceeds are channelled back into the centre for the benefit of the children. We now open at 6.30am and close at 5:15pm making it a great choice for working parents, especially those who start work at 7am. The centre is tucked away behind the Northland Club, it’s private, quiet with no road or foot traffic which makes it very safe. There is plenty of parking with easy access to the centre. 20 Free ECE hours are available to all three and four year olds and there may also be financial subsidies from Work and Income (based on eligibility). We’re licensed for 50 children aged 0 to 5yrs and as a mixed centre our children have the opportunity to interact with all ages (including their siblings) throughout the day.

We have themed days, visitors to the centre, trips out locally and regular visits by the library bus. Our four year olds attend swimming lessons and school transition visits. Outside we have a huge sandpit, grassed area, 2 two playgrounds, a swing area, a mini cycleway for scooters and trikes, a water feature, a big deck with natural shade, covered veranda and large inside indoor open plan space. Healthy food is cooked freshly onsite daily (except Tuesday which is lunchbox day) and the menu is wonderfully varied. There’s always lots of laughter and the children here settle in quickly and enjoy the feeling of being part of an extended whanau. All of our permanent teachers are 100% qualified, there is so much positive and constructive energy in the centre that visitors can’t help but notice when they walk through the door. If you’re looking for quality early childhood education, please pop in anytime and we will be happy to show you around our awesome centre. MAIRTOWN HEREKINO KINDERGARTEN SCHOOL

M

airtown kindergarten is situated close to the town centre of Whangarei in Kensington. At Mairtown we believe in promoting a nurturing and welcoming learning environment that is also aesthetically pleasing. We are strong advocates for supporting the relevance of play as a tool for learning, of knowing our community and of being immersed and engaged with nature. Play is very exciting for young children. We believe that when play is supported by knowledgeable and inclusive teachers, who recognise and respond to each child’s interests and uniqueness, the rewards in terms of learning are limitless. Through their play children flourish, they learn about descriptive language, social skills, to be creative, solve problems and to develop knowledge about the world around them. We believe in providing a natural and stimulating environment for our children, one which nurtures, respects, supports and challenges children to learn and develop a love of learning. At Mairtown we provide many opportunities for children to learn deeply about the world in which they live; one aspect of this is our Nature Programme. We are proud to now be well into our eighth successful year of getting children back outside, into nature and into their community. In our last visit from the Education Review Office we received the highest recommendation possible of a four year return. Here are some extracts from this report: Teachers at Mairtown…continue to provide high quality programmes and

promote strong community links. Children have a sense of belonging, responsibility and well-being. Children’s learning programmes respond to their ideas and foster their engagement in creativity, thinking and expressive language. Teachers work closely with children, inviting conversations that are rich in descriptive language and that support children’s theories about how the world works. At Mairtown kindergarten all our teachers are 100% qualified and are passionate about the care and education of all children. Our environment is welcoming and homely and has a large grassed outdoor area with ample of opportunity for children to explore, climb, be social or find a quiet space to be at one in nature. Our families attend from all over the Whangarei region. Sessions are Monday to Friday, 8.30am – 2.30pm. Enrolments are always welcome, feel free to pop in

and visit. Alternatively you can also read our teaching philosophy, experience some of the learning and community involvement at Mairtown, and read our most recent ERO report by viewing our blog at www. mairtownkindy.blogspot.com or finding us on Facebook.

Vision: “Working together to be the best that we can be” “Ka mahinga pai tatou ki te tino matau”

O

haeawai School staff and students have enjoyed another successful school year. Students have taken part in activities both in and outside of the classroom, celebrating our unique identity. The year has been filled with learning, collaboration, trips, laughter, family, fun and most importantly student successes. As a school, our priority is to raise student achievement and develop confident, motivated students who have ownership over their learning. Our teachers are committed to providing innovative programmes using Learn, Create, Share. As part of being a Manaiakalani Outreach School, digital learning is an integral part of the teaching and learning that happens and the Chromebook acts as a pencil and book as well as a tool for students to access their work and most importantly, a means to communicate and collaborate with classmates, teachers, whanau and the world.

Under the tutelage of Matua Dwayne, our kapa haka tutor, our kapa haka group continued to grow and develop and once again performed at the Kaikohe and Districts Cultural Festival. Our Year three and four students take part in the Garden to Table Programme. The children enjoy working in the garden, planting seedlings, harvesting and then creating delicious recipes using what they have harvested. As part of our enviro curriculum, students also create Kawakawa balm, bath salts and beeswax wraps and our senior students play a major part in our recycling programme. Some of this year’s highlights include; Whanau House Evenings, Art Auction, Year 1 and 2 Auckland trip, Cross Country, School Triathlon, Whakapakari Tinana Challenge (we WON!), Year 3 and 4 Beach Trip, Pet Day, Zoofari, Music Concert, Greats and Grands Day and participating in the Raranga Matihiko Programme at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds.

019 has been another successful year at Kaeo School with so much for our children, staff and community to look back on with

pride. This was ‘Art Exhibition Year’ with the school showcasing the children’s amazing art skills in what was another high quality display of a wide range of art works. Over 600 people visited the exhibition over the week that it was open to the public and each and everyone was left amazed at the talent of the children and the standard of the work. Success in the classroom was evident with excellent achievement against all of the schools learning goals and we were represented well on the sports field too with our Rippa Rugby side performing well in the local tournament and our senior side qualifying for the Northland Finals. A special mention must be made of Vlad Misescu who finished third at the Northland Cross Country Championships our schools first ‘podium’ finish for many a year.

KAITAIA PRIMARY SCHOOL Message from the Principal Brendon Morrissey

Kia ora koutou! 2019 has been an exciting year for us here at KPS. Our school roll continues to grow and having 400 students is something we are becoming more used to. Our BOT has agreed to fund 2 extra teachers in 2020 so we will have 18 classrooms in total. The Ministry of Education has targeted our school to have 5 new roll growth classrooms which will be arriving early in 2020 also. My thanks to everyone who has journeyed with us in 2019. Your support is what continues to make our school strong. I wish all those returning in 2020 a safe and happy Christmas holiday. 019 has been another year of significant growth at Kaitaia Primary School. We welcomed the (Resource Teachers for Learning and Behaviour (RTLB) to our team of staff in 2018, giving us 80 staff in total. Our RTLB staff support 70 schools from Southern Bay of Islands all the way up to Te Hapua, East coast to West coast. We have become a school that takes pride in what we can do for others in our community. We have held fundraisers to support local groups like the Salvation Army. We add about 400 cans of food to our local Foodbank every year as part of the Watties “Cans for Good” programme. We are proud supporters of our local St Johns and our Westpac Rescue Helicopter. We support Kids Can, who

give a lot of help to many schools throughout Aotearoa. We also support Daffodil Day every year and donate our MuftiDay proceeds to that great cause. This is part of our school culture and it is awesome to hear our kids’ excitement about getting to help others. Our school curriculum has continued to develop into a balance between a “curriculum of care” and a “curriculum of achievement”. Our children are finding success in their learning and their relationships in our Reo Rua learning

classrooms (Rooms 18, 15 and 19) and in our mainstream classrooms alike. We strive to have tikanga Maori in our school environment in all our classrooms and in our playground. At KPS, we believe that everyone deserves a chance to be successful and are prepared to adapt our school environment, culture and attitude to make this possible for all our students. We work through the tough times and the good with whanau and believe that having strong relationships is the key to success for all. We strive every day to live up to our school Vision Statement: Kia whakaara kia manawanui mō tona ao (Inspired and resourceful learners for life). We can’t wait to see what 2020 brings our school!

MANAIA VIEW SCHOOL

A

t Manaia View School we pride ourselves on the caring and supportive whanau environment we provide for our students. Not only do we offer Year 1 -Year 8 mainstream education we also host on-site the Manaia View Kindergarten, a specialist Technology Centre, Kelston Deaf Education Centre, Blind and Low Vision Education Network NZ, Blomfield Special School classes and a Level 1 Te Reo Immersion Unit for years 1-8. Our primary goal is to ensure student success and we are able to meet this by offering students a range of opportunities to succeed both in the classroom and beyond. An important aspect of our school programme is our digital immersion classrooms. Students from Year 5 to Year 8 all have their own digital device and complete the majority of their learning online. Digital classes allow students to follow individualised learning programmes; students have a wealth of information at their fingertips and have a range of creative tools available to present and share their learning. Our students have become inventive problem solvers through lessons that can include computer coding and animation. Junior classes also have ample access to a range of technology, they are able to use a range of online applications to support and extend their understanding of the world around them.

While technology is an important component of our school day, we provide a strong sports programme and a range of opportunities for students to take part in activities outside the classroom. This year trips have included Waitangi, school camps at The Farm, the Auckland Zoo, Snorkelling, Surfing and a special programme focussing on Kaitiakitanga. Students have made the most of the many opportunities available to extend their learning and to take part in new experiences. We are very proud of our rich Maori heritage and this is an important part of our school culture. To ensure our students develop a strong sense of identity and belonging, learning is immersed in Ngapuhitanga alongside the New Zealand Curriculum, This year, this has included a hikoi to explore Te Whare Tapu o Ngapuhi. Kapa haka and Tikanga Maori are important components of our school day, and our students pride themselves on their performances and ability to participate in cultural events. As a school, we strive for excellence culturally, socially and academically. We work together to ensure our graduating students take pride in their identity, have a strong sense of belonging and are confident in their ability to succeed. RAURIMU AVENUE SCHOOL Our Mission Poipoia te rito o te harakeke

Likened to the centre shoot of the flax, every child is nurtured, through the relationships and interactions of their whanau, teachers, community, hapū and iwi. The school mission acknowledges the lifelong learning and whanaungatanga that a child inherits, grows through and then goes on to regenerate.

G

Our Vision Providing a safe and happy learning environment through CARE and MANA

reetings from Raurimu Ave School! We are a small school with a big heart. The teachers and staff, pride themselves on making sure that the students are always at the ‘heart’ of the matter. You are welcome to drop in and visit our school at any time. Come down to see and experience the positive school climate.

Environmental Education

Learning how to care for the environment is a major component of the school curriculum at Raurimu Ave School. This year the students have renewed their involvement with the Dragonfly Springs Wetland Sanctuary. The senior class have begun regular visits to the local sanctuary, joining in on voluntary efforts to care for this local taonga. At the same time they will learn about the ecosystems and flora and fauna of the area. Other environmental work this year included the Drains to Harbour project and participation in the National Recycling Week.

Annual Festival

The Festival this year was even larger than last year. Schools from around Whangarei came along to share performance with each other. The award winning school band from Whangarei Intermediate showcased their entertainment skills alongside Hurupaki, Totara Grove, Horahora, Te Kura Kaupapa o Rawhitiroa, Onerahi and Whau Valley Primary Schools. Food stalls provided lots of yummy treats that kept the crowd happy throughout the day. Make sure you come along next year to join in on the fun.

Swimming Pool Fun

The Board of Trustees were pleased to re-open the pool after completing the pool resurfacing project this year. A brand new surface, tiling and no more leaks means our school pool is like new. Students get to swim every day and participate in Swim Safe lessons to improve their water safety skills.

Tuia 250

Raurimu Ave School joined Parua Bay Primary, Onerahi Primary and Whangarei Heads School along the Onerahi foreshore to welcome the Tuia 250 flotilla. Students at Raurimu learnt about the different types of boats, celestial navigation, the polynesian navigator Tupaia and more before heading to the event. Students were amazed by the sight of the boats and their differences in size, shape and speed. Watch the video here to see for yourself.

RUAKAKA PRIMARY Message from the Principal Marilyn Dunn Principal

Over the last 12 months Ruakaka School has continued to go ahead in leaps and bounds. We are in our third year of the “Positive Behaviour for Learning” programme so there is a harmonious and calm atmosphere throughout the school. Community support is fantastic and this has been proven by the tremendous Gala Day we held earlier in the year. We are excited about the year ahead as we anticipate the completion of a brand new, bigger swimming pool, a new playground, and the start of a 10 classroom block. We are also expecting a large number of new entrants to start in 2020.

We have been in a period of growth over many years with our current roll being around 280, gaining at least one new classroom every year. We currently have 21 teaching staff, 27 support staff and the principal (Marilyn Dunn). As a result of this, we have started planning with the ministry for a huge redevelopment of the school to cater for the continuing growth expected in the Bream Bay area in the future. This is a very exciting faze for our school as we will be building innovative learning environments that will reflect current pedagogy We opened our new multi-purpose/ library building early this year which has become the heart of our school, plus a new classroom. Because our new entrant numbers have grown so much, we currently have a class in the staffroom until we get a classroom next year.

Bilingual classes

We have 4 bilingual classes and with one of these being a rumaki reo class for new entrants which will continue throughout the unit in the future. We are the only primary school that provides bilingual education

in the Bream Bay area and children can attend our school if they want bilingual education – even if they are out of zone.

Learning Through Play

This year we have incorporated Learning Through Play throughout many of our classes and it has been exciting seeing this develop as the year has progressed.

Education Review Office visit We had the Education Review Office visit our school this year as part of their 3-yearly cycle and we received a report that we are very proud of. The main things they noticed were that we are a very inclusive school where everyone has a strong sense of belonging.

Garden to Table

We have had 4 classes involved in our Garden to Table programme this year which is held in our beautiful new Multipurpose/Library building which has 3

kitchen spaces. We had 2 of our students selected to go into the national finals of the “Root to Tip” competition which was held in Wellington. Although they did not win, they had a wonderful experience and we were so proud of them.

STEAM –

(Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Maths) This year, as part of the Bream Bay Kāhui Ako, we have been a lot of exciting learning around STEAM and we will be holding a Showcase shortly to show of what we have been doing.

Show Day

Our Show Day was held again this year but we were only permitted to have lambs and goats because of the Mycoplasmabovis problem with cows. We still had an exciting day enjoyed by all.

TOTARA NORTH SCHOOL 1

A small rural school established in 1852 and has served many generations of local families and those from the wider Whangaroa district. We are located on the beautiful Whangaroa Harbour hillside. We are special as we have small classes and a friendly community feeling that creates a whanau like environment where children form caring relationships are enabled to give everything a go. An Enviroschool and we are continuing to build on what we have already done and continue to practice sustainable learning opportunities. This year our School Camp was a trip down to Whangarei Heads - Camp Manaia. This was intergrated with our EMR (Experiencing Marine Reserves) programme. This programme involves snorkling Marine Reserves and local beaches to compare the sites and see what marine life is there. The Marine Reserve that we snorkled was Reotahi at Whangarei Heads. The Community project that the children were also involved in was to make stickers for boaties showing the legal fish size required and general boat safety. These were given out at our annual Fishing Competition - King of the Coast. To continue with the Marine and Water life theme we embarked on a journey with the Whitebait Connection Programme where the children looked what animals and plants live in our local waterways. Also in Term 2 it was all about Recycle, Reuse, Reduce focus where the children ended up designing and making an outfit for the Whangaroa Trash to Flash Show. There were some awesome outfits that were produced. Other major events in 2019 were Cross Country which we host for other local schools, continued work with Waitangi Treaty Ground Educators around digital technology, a study about other countries revolved around the Rugby World Cup, a Pet Day and the annual performance at the Cultural Festival. We are a KIwi Can School and our Kiwi Can Leaders are here every week teaching values around social relationships, behaviour and learning, We regularly engage with expert provides to deliver engaging education programmes and activities that teach children about making healthy lifestyle choices and therefore Totara North School

is involved with the Energise Programme (Sport Northland), Watersafe Programme and other coaches from different sporting codes. A big thank you must go out to our numerous volunteers and sponsors that support our annual ‘King of the Coast’ fishing competition and our major fundraiser. TAURAROA AREA SCHOOL

T

he students and staff of Tauraroa Area School, supported by parents, the Board of Trustees and community, have enjoyed many successes in 2019. Located 20 minutes southwest of Whangarei, catering for over 500 students from Y1 to Y13, the school attracts students from a wide area, including Whangarei city. Our vision, “to be the best we can be” is seen in our focus on high quality teaching and learning, with the goal of developing young people to become resilient, selfmanaging, qualified individuals of good character, equipped for the world beyond the school gates. Cornerstone Values are an important aspect of learning at TAS. This year we have focused on respect, duty, kindness and honesty. These values contribute strongly to the sense of ‘family’ or ‘whanaungatanga’ at school. The Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award Scheme has seen 46 students work towards gaining Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards, putting Cornerstone Values in practice through community service, learning skills and undertaking challenging expeditions 2019 has featured a number of significant events; from athletics day and swimming sports, to cross-country, polar bear swim and country day. The Matariki/ Wearable Arts evening again showcased the creativity of our staff and students. TAS Creative On Stage ‘wowed’ a large audience at the Capitaine Bougainville Theatre in September, with a wide range of outstanding music, dance and kapa haka. We continued to welcome international enrolments, with students from Japan, France and Thailand attending Tauraroa AS this year. The recent signing of a ‘Sister School’ agreement with Yuyan School in Anshan, China has created

further opportunities for international student exchanges. As 2019 draws to a close, we look forward to some major property developments, including the imminent refurbishment and extension of our drama facilities and the construction of a new gymnasium. Students at Tauraroa Area School enjoy the benefits of a beautiful rural setting along with the very best learning facilities technology and - most importantly - caring, professional teachers. Students of all backgrounds, interests and abilities are challenged and supported to be The Best They Can Be. The staff and students of Tauraroa Area School have had a great year. We look forward to more of the same level of success as we look forward to 2020.

KAMO INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL 3 2 Message from the Principal

Having recently completed two years of Principalship at Kamo Intermediate School, I am thrilled with the direction in which we are heading. Character classes, Passion Based Learning / Maker Space, Academic, Cultural and Sporting opportunities offer choice for our young people. Highly engaged learners together with staff, an amazing Parent Support Group and a supportive Board of Trustees that live by our vision of ‘Together, Building Tomorrow’, make it a joy to lead this school. Students have been, and are constantly encouraged to ‘give things a go’ so that no student should leave at the end of their two years saying ‘I wish I had…’ Enjoy reading and viewing some of the activities our students have participated in this year.

Kim Sloane - Principal

I

ntermediate School years are the time to try so many different activities before our young people need to make choices for their future direction in life. We pride ourselves that as one of only two schools in Whangarei who focus specifically on emerging adolescents, our resources cater solely for this age group. Our overarching concept for the year was Life Skills and we offered a number of opportunities to engage our learners. Project Based Learning and Maker Space (upcycling used products) provided opportunities to explore areas of interest and passion. Complementing the school curriculum, students have engaged in an area of their own interest. Examples of this include exploring climate change, making products (butterbeer from Harry Potter) to sell in order to raise money for the SPCA, exploring ways to preserve ancestors knowledge through photography, surviving on Mars, and saving the Weta. In addition to our Boys Only Class, we added two more character classes offering choice of learning style. One of our Thinkers Plus classes spent a week in Wellington exploring the Weta Workshop, Parliament, Te Papa, Capital E and the famous Cuba Street. In groups the students had responsibility for planning, purchasing and preparing the meals for themselves and their supporting adult for the week. Having to budget and provide nutritional meals was a great learning experience. As part of our Careers Unit, Syndicates organised guest speakers to talk about what skills were required to achieve well in their respective careers. One syndicate is in the process of organising an Expo where they will be promoting their chosen career. After a great deal of research,

NORTHLAND’S

FIRST CLASS CIVIL CONTRACTORS SINCE 1972. Turning vision into reality – we make it happen so people can have a positive sense of progress, place and pride.

the students have prepared the best way possible to ‘sell’ their career. Whanau and the local secondary and primary schools have been invited to attend. Our Kapa Haka Roopu participated in a few events this year and most recently were part of a festival at Whangaruru School. They are looking forward to competing in the regional competition again next year. Our choir had the opportunity to perform with other local school choirs, as part of the Kids for Kids Concert held at Forum North. A group of Textiles & Art Extension students participated in the Bernina Fashion Awards winning first, second and third in the Masquerade Section. This group combined textiles with visual art to produce some outstanding artwork. Their results speak for themselves. In addition to our textiles and visual art classes, our other specialist classes of biotechnology, food, robotics, music and performing arts enhances the generalist class programme. Due to the highly contested Syndicate Cup, we had a number of competitions running throughout the year. This included a school wide Mathex Competition, Literature Quiz, regular lunchtime sporting activities and our Inspire Awards, based on our school values. We encourage regular participation in sports with syndicates having regular fitness programmes in addition to the school wide competitions. Kamo Intermediate students participated in the annual Intermediate Winter Sports Games and the annual AIMS (Association of Intermediate and Middle School) Sports Games in Tauranga where we won a gold, silver and three bronze medals. Our Parent Support Group organised

a Mighty Walk, where for 12 hours the students, staff and supporting whanau members set out to see how far we could collectively walk while striding around Kensington Park. In addition to raising over $20,000 we collectively walked over 10,000 km! Each year our Y8 students have the opportunity to spend a week in Vanuatu and explore a different culture. We visit a number of schools and villages, donating resources that they wouldn’t otherwise have. Some of the cultural experiences include releasing nurtured baby turtles into the ocean, exploring some of the local history, zip lining, snorkeling, crab hunting, sliding down waterfalls and exploring some of the local islands. This is a life changing trip for many students when they compare the facilities in the local schools to what they have at Kamo Intermediate. This is just a small sample of the experiences our students take part in throughout the year

1. Ben Burns with one of the local children in Vanuatu 2. School Mathex Competition - teams of 4 testing their problem solving skills against each other. 3. Izzy Cole bonding with a turtle before releasing it into the ocean in Vanuatu.

WHANGAREI INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL

W

hangārei Intermediate School has had another busy year. We have continued to offer many different learning opportunities this year from sporting, through to The Arts, Technological, Environmental, Educational and Cultural. We have attended the AIMs games in Tauranga, continued to work on our Environmental Quest of achieving a Green Gold School, attended Sports Camp at Totara Springs in Matamata, developed our Kia Māori Mai Marau in Te Whānau o Waimirirangi, raised funds for charities, had two trips go to Great Barrier Island for a week and another group of students go to Mount Tongariro and stay at the National Park. On top of that we have had a range of group and individual successes. A group of students formed Te Reo Kia Māori Mai with their kaiako winning the Auckland regional Band Quest, then achieving second place in the National Band Quest Competition, our Extravaganza showcased our dance, singing, musical and dramatic talents at Forum North while our Dancers on Tour, showcased their talents to schools in Whangārei. This year we also hosted three school groups of students from Korea who came on cultural exchanges, while a lucky group of our students also visited Korea. This year we were very successful in the Lit Quiz competition. We won the Northland competition and got to travel to Wellington and compete in the National competition where we came 12th. We also competed in the Northland Mathex competition, students won awards in the Central Northland Science and Technology Fair and the National Problem Solving Challenge. WIS hosted the EPRO8 Technology Challenge in September and another group of students attend the National Chess Competition in Christchurch where the team came 12th. The AIMs games tournament is now a regular feature of Whangārei Intermediate School and this year teams and individuals headed to Tauranga for a fun filled week where students competed against their peers from all over NZ and the Pacific. This year we had five students come home

with medals, from gold to bronze. As part of our Green Gold journey, our Eco Warriors, headed by Mr Tom Peyton, worked hard to rejuvenate our Waiarohia Stream with a mass clean up in March and planting in July, with the help of KPMG, Northland Regional Council and Ngawha Prison. This group then created a Pātaka Kai to help give back to our community, where people can donate or gather food that is needed. Inside school they have created a Rongoā Garden where medicinal plants have been planted for future use and creation of traditional Māori medicine. They have continued to look at ways to minimise rubbish and stop adding to our landfills, by using the Shred It scheme, recycling items and trying to reduce how much rubbish we generate. Our trips to Great Barrier Island and

Mount Tongariro have always been popular. This year we took two groups to Great Barrier Island where everyone enjoyed the wide range of individual and team challenges. The Mount Tongariro group enjoyed a lot of snow, where they got to learn to ski or snowboard, stay the night in a cave and much, much more. We are lucky to have a widely talented and enthusiastic staff who can provide a wide range of activities and opportunities for our Tamariki. Our E-Learning environment, where students use a Chromebook or device to access information, work critically in collaboration or independently and create a wide variety of digital media to present their information and knowledge to a large audience. Students learn lifelong skills that enable them to thrive in high school and the workplace.

He mihi mahana kia koutou katoa. See what we have been doing at WIS during 2019 and some of the exciting things available to our wonderful students. At Whangārei Intermediate School we want to break through any limitations that may hinder our students from achieving in their learning and developing as people. We promote a problem-solving culture in our school that works and promotes a ‘can-do’ attitude. We promote having high expectations, which means being certain that all of us can learn and improve - no exceptions! We would be happy to show you around our kura so that you can see it in action and feel the pulse of a school with a strong sense of its purpose, and to see our students in action!

BAY OF ISLANDS COLLEGE “KOKIRI NGATAHI” “Moving Forward, Quickly, in Partnership” MISSION STATEMENT “Together we will develop respectful students, maximising their potential” Bay of Islands College is a co-educational, multicultural, State Secondary School which serves a wide area of rural and commercial centres. Our philosophy is that all students should be challenged to reach their full potential, develop selfworth, respect and pride in achievement. This is reflected in our high expectations for students to learn and achieve personal excellence in all aspects of school life. Situated in Kawakawa, the College boasts 25 acres of attractively landscaped grounds including sporting fields and courts. College facilities include: 29 teaching rooms, 17 offices, a library, assembly hall, gymnasium, swimming pool access, marae, music blocks, sports pavilion, canteen, uniform and stationery room and an upgraded administration

block. These facilities enable Bay of Islands College to offer and deliver quality programs, catering for Year 9 to Year 13 students. In addition to academic pursuits, our students are involved in a wide range of extra-curricular activities, particularly Maori culture, sport, drama and the Arts. Bay of Islands College celebrates cultural diversity within unity of purpose and a desire for all working in together to achieve their hopes and dreams within a supportive family atmosphere; whanaungatanga. The cultural mix of our college (2017 ERO) is 90% Māori, 7% NZ European, 3% other (Pacific Island, Asian etc). Achievement of Māori students is monitored using school wide data collection and analysis to support the

needs of student Bay of Islands College is also a Restorative Justice and Culturally Responsive and Relationally Pedagogical school. The school has a Reo Rua Unit (Years 9-13) which works collaboratively with parents and whanau in the community to deliver programs through the medium and or context of Te Reo Maori me ona tikanga. We are developing the transition for our students moving from secondary into tertiary education. Manaiakalani and Kaikohekohe Trust work in partnership with the school to make digital citizens of our learners and their whanau. They also provide Digital Fluency PLD to individual teachers and the whole staff.

Message from the Principal

Manaiakalani and Kaikohekohe Trusts Bay of Islands College is proud to be a member of the Manaiakalani and Kaikohekohe Trusts. Our goal is to make digital citizens of our learners and their whanau. We enable them to access their learning anywhere, anytime and at any pace. We do this by supporting whanau to purchase a personal digital device for each learner and providing wireless internet access at school. Intensive Digital Fluency Professional Development for teachers provides the time and ‘hands on’ learning to gain an understanding of the new digital technologies content and learn useful teaching strategies which benefit student learning. There has been a smooth transition of students from schools using Chromebooks through the shared understanding of “Learn, Create, Share.’ Staff, whanau and students work together to proactively manage digital safety and implement strategies which promote

higher levels of independent learning and develop the metacognitive skills necessary for the ever changing workplace. Bay of Islands College is the only chromebook digital learning secondary school in the mid north.

Environmental Sustainability Management Spring has sprung at Bay of Islands College and the Environmental Sustainability Management (ESM) students are making the most of the warm weather! It has been a busy term with students learning valuable skills and gaining NCEA credits by demonstrating knowledge of ‘Soil Management Practices’ ‘’Demonstrating knowledge of Plant Propagation Techniques’ and ‘Designing Landscape Plans’ to beautify our school. It has been a great year so far and we are looking forward to the next steps on our journey. Thank you everyone for your support.

Photos of our fantastic kids doing an awesome job picking up rubbish around the Kawakawa community during ‘Keep New Zealand Beautiful Week’. It was great to see our students and staff enjoying the mahi and taking a keen interest in helping to keep our lovely community clean. Kapai!

It is everyone’s job as educators to inspire students to strive to achieve, and along the way, develop ‘Learner for Life’ characteristics. A quintessential element of schools, staff and students that encourages teachers to stay in the profession and students to engage positively in school is TRUST. People want to be surrounded with people they can trust. Everyone values opportunities to prove that they are trustworthy and if they feel they are trusted they are more committed to goals. In a trusting environment there is more fun, greater support, higher motivation and a willingness to embrace a new vision. So let’s spend more time and energy developing and maintaining trust, and creating these positive outcomes to entice our teaching colleagues back into schools, encourage new people to train and to keep the many awesome teachers we already have.

EXCELLERE COLLEGE 1 I t has been a wonderful year at Excellere College. As usual, we end Term 4 with countless highlights, successes and inspiration for the year ahead. Our students have been able to experience many parts of New Zealand this year with trips set across the country ranging from skiing at snow camp to kayaking and fishing at summer camp. There were also local visits across the community including trips to Adventure Forest, Whangarei Library, Glow in the Dark Mini Golf and other urban areas, which helped our students connect further with our local Whangarei. The new science, art and music classrooms saw an increased motivation for learning as students found a new level of enjoyment for scientific investigations, musical performances and art and design works. Outside of the classroom, highlights included the high level of commitment and enthusiasm in sports with students across the college proudly representing our school in various sporting events throughout the year. Another highlight was the Senior College school ball. This had an ‘Evening in Shanghai” theme and was held at the Flames restaurant in Onerahi. We had a strong community focus this year with the Middle College arranging regular visits and performances for the people at Merrivale Care Home. Our cross-country day raised money for Run for Bibles as our students raced through the paddocks on a hot Northland day. Events such as the 40-hour famine, yellow day and mufti days also raised money for valuable organisations such as Kids Can and the Cancer Society. It has been fantastic to see the students developing an attitude of care and compassion for the community around them. The staff and students at Excellere College wish you a safe and joyful summer and a very happy new year.

e encourage parents to consider carefully those attributes found in independent education. Young people are special and this needs to be acknowledged with a sense of being part of a caring community with rules and freedoms that mirror the expectations of an ordered society. This includes a need for a sense of order and discipline which goes hand-in-hand with a respect for authority; the development of sound work habits and organisational skills; an extra-curricular programme that promotes a keen interest in sport and the arts; the instilling of a sensible approach to competition, learning to win with humility, to lose with grace; a staff united in its commitment to excellence in the classroom and its involvement in the broader life of the community; frequent reminders of the intrinsic importance and value of each individual. In short, Huanui College demonstrates a commitment to learning, to justice, to individual achievement and to wholeness. The key benefit of a Huanui College education is the sense of community and the individual’s place within it. The main benefits are embodied in consistency, innovation and capability. We believe in a strong emphasis on preparing students for a changing world, while maintaining respect for tradition and focus on instilling a love of learning, respect for themselves and others, tolerance of humanity – in fact, celebrating diversity. Both students and teachers benefit from a community with this as its emphasis.

his year has been one of continuous improvement as we strive to become the school of choice within our community. The setting of our school expectations and standards begins with the small things such as wearing the correct school uniform and addressing teachers and each other in a mutually respectful manner. We have purposely targeted a number of community events to share with the wider community what we, as a school, have to offer. This started with our Hospitality students being a part of this year’s Waitangi Day Celebrations. It was fantastic to have past students visit the stall and commend us for our participation in the celebrations. The School Gala was a great success and provided our students with an opportunity to action their entrepreneurial talents and skills. It was certainly wonderful to see our whānau and the wider community coming in to support the array of activities and events we had on offer. We know when students are involved in sport the benefits can be far-reaching beyond the sporting arena. Northland College has a proud sporting history and many of our past students were able to compete at both regional and national levels. The natural talent that many of our students possess at times is truly remarkable. However, this needs to be supported by effective coaching and conditioning programmes. The re-introduction of our Quadrangular Sports Tournament provided a platform for our students to compete against other students from the far north. This day would not have been possible without the great support given by a number of past Northland College students. Our gymnasium and school facilities are being used by sports and community groups on a regular basis, which we fully endorse. We know that behind every student success that occurs throughout the school year in the Sporting, Cultural, Leadership or Academic arenas there is a teacher involved. This only happens when you have a teaching team who go above and beyond the call of duty on a weekly

basis providing opportunities for our students to be the best that they can be. Northland College provides an environment that is underpinned by values that have been passed down to us from previous generations and that recognise Tangata-whenua whilst still valuing all knowledge, language and culture. Our Modern Learning Environment (MLE) has embraced wānanga to enable our rangatahi and whānau to gain knowledge, skills and wisdom, confidence and self-determination in preparing for their journey into the world. Our teaching team and BOT would like to wish all our whānau and community safe travels over the summer, and like you, we look forward to the challenges and opportunities, and celebrations of next year. Noho ora mai John Kendal, Principal

WHANGAREI BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL

2019 – Another outstanding and inspiring year in the proud history of Whangārei Boys’ High School Message from the Principal

Whangārei Boys’ High School had another excellent year and we continue to do what we do best. We have high expectations of the boys in all areas of the school and the community. We take immense pride in their achievements and continually encourage them to aim for excellence in all their endeavours. The school vision is to develop boys into fine men and we have certainly continued to achieve that this year and will continue to do so in the future.

– K Gilbert-Smith, PRINCIPAL

O

ur academic results in 2018 were some of our best ever, with pass rates exceeding National Rates in all areas for Levels 1 & 2 and on a par at Level 3. The school was a dominant force in Science Fair this year with some stunning entries picking up 24 awards, including Best Year 9 Technology Award, Northpower Consistent Excellence Award and Nomination for the Prime Minister’s Future Scientist Prize Year 12 Technology, and Otago University Hands on Science Award Year 12 Technology. This continues to underline WBHS as one of the top Science schools in the north. The school takes great pride in its sporting achievements and a longstanding reputation as the top sporting school for boys in Northland. Our 2019 successes were no exception to this tradition. Sporting highlights include: the Adventure Racing Team coming 2nd in the Torpedo7 Hillary Challenge; Sam Webb led the 1st XI Hockey Team to 9th Place in the top-ranked Rankin Cup Tournament, Luke Trigg and Hayden Ganley were selected to the NZ U18 Squad; Riley-Jack Vette-Blomquist won selection to the NZ Secondary Schools Squash Team. In Australian Rules Football, Xavier Mexted was selected to the NZ U18 Team. Xavier was also a member of the NZ U18 Mixed Touch Rugby Squad. Rugby players Javarne Porter and Rocky Olsen were selected for the NZ Secondary School

Barbarians and NZ Māori U18 Squad, respectively. Wood chopper, Tytan Semenoff was selected for the NZ U21 Axeman Team to compete in Australia. Ryan Townsend was selected to represent New Zealand in Gymnastics. At the ASB Northland Secondary School Sports Awards, WBHS won a record 17 individual awards and Riley-Jack Vette-Blomquist gained the top award of Sportsman of the Year. In the cultural field 2019 was also special. Matthew He was a member of the chamber music trio “Farr Out Trio” which won Best Performance of a NZ Work at the National Chamber Music Finals. Nathan Calver was the NZ U18 Rock’n’Roll Dance Champion and finished 1st in the Pacific International Rock and Roll and Swing Competition. The strength of our other cultural programmes continues to provide for and encourage boys to shine in fields other than the sporting arena. The Drama Department continues to produce high calibre shows in the Senior School. Our students continue to achieve some stunning results in the academic field. A number of students have been awarded prestigious university scholarships for 2019. These include a University of Auckland Top Achiever Scholarship to Nathaniel Singleton; University of Otago Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarships to Jackson Shields, Nathaniel Singelton, Luke Trigg, Ryan Lenssen, Rahul Rejumon, Ben West and Harrison Higgins; University of Otago Performance 150th Entrance Scholarship to Nathan Calver and Jordan Dwight; Victoria University of Wellington Totoweka Scholarship to Alex Ballantine; Victoria University of Wellington Tangiwai Scholarship to Kurtis Collings, Ryan Lenssen and Rahul Rejumon; University of Canterbury Emerging Leaders Scholarship to Ben West; Lincoln Univeristy Future Leaders Scholarship to Caleb Smith; The University of Waikato Te Paewai o te Rangi Scholarship to Jacob Kennedy; The University of Waikato Manu Kaewa Scholarship to Cole Taylor; the Prime Ministers Vocational Excellence Award to Liam Holroyd; and

Oranga Tamariki Prime Minister’s Award Trailblazing Technology Scholarship to Jacob Gibbons. The leadership programme at WBHS continues to provide opportunities for our boys that are unparalleled in Northland. Every boy has a chance to develop his leadership skills and become a school prefect. In 2020, all boys have an opportunity to participate in Prefect-led committees, put themselves forward for a place on the Student Council, and develop leadership capacity by getting involved in the Student Volunteer Army. We continue to explore ways of developing junior leadership alongside that of the Senior School. 2019 has been another great year in the long history of Northland’s oldest secondary school – business as usual for us and with the new school build on the horizon, the prospect of continuing to develop boys into fine men in 2020 and beyond is something we look forward to with much excitement. If you are interested in enrolling your son at WBHS for 2020 as a day boy, please contact the school on 430 4170 ext 742 (or enrolments@wbhs.school.nz) for an enrolment pack and information. LIVE AND LEARN R AT WHANGAREI BOYS’ HIGH HI SCHOOL CARRUTH T HOUSE / AN EDUCATION CHOICE C Whangarei Boys’ High School is taking new enrolments for 2020 at its boarding hostel, Carruth House. If you are asking yourself ‘what is best for my son’, and are looking for a structured living environment where he can focus on academic, sporting and co-curricular success, then Carruth House could be a great choice. In addition to the wide range of academic options, boys are able to pursue any sporting, cultural and musical interests while living here. The school offers over 35 different sports codes, from Adventure Racing to Waka Ama, and many performing arts opportunities. The hostel has around 25-30 spaces for 2020, at all year levels. Whangarei High School opened in 1881 but it wasn’t until 1913 that it was determined a

boarding hostel would be required to cater for students from throughout Northland. A building was erected on the then School site in Lupton Avenue and opened to boarders for the princely fee of $70 per year. By 1920 the Whangarei High School was getting larger and it was determined that land should be purchased to build a separate school to allow the separation of boys and girls. The current site of Whangarei Boys’ High School was opened in 1925 and the number of boys in the Hostel on Lupton Avenue had risen to over 90. It was decided that it was appropriate to build a separate facility to house the boys and the now current site of Carruth House in Kent Road opened in 1927. It was named Carruth House after the then Chairman of the Board, Mr W A Carruth.

Some might say that Carruth House is the back-bone of Whangarei Boys’ High School, certainly all former boarders would do so. Whangarei Boys’ High School prides itself on offering a wide and varied curriculum to their boys, from the strongly academic to the vocationally focused. Along with regular classes the school also offers a Gifted and Talented Education programme, Supported Learning and Gateway work placements. There is no doubt that it is an asset to education in Northland where boys from all over can receive the type of education that they may not be able to get in some of the outlying areas of the region. There is no doubt that Carruth House provides students with a positive start in life.

I love being able to come to a place where I can immerse myself in the trade - I’m doing what I love and improving my skills with a team who are all into the same thing, and with tutors that have 40+ years’ experience in the trade.”

Lakiesha Cummings - Social Work “Since studying at NorthTec, I’m amazed at the massive growth in myself and in others on the programme. It has transformed my sense of self, and when I get my degree I’m keen to serve as a role model for rangatahi.”

Amrinder Singh - Sport and Recreation “We’ve been working at community events run by Sports Northland which gives us practical experience and has increased my confidence. I volunteered as a guide at two Beast crosscountry running events and really enjoyed it. I know that this training will impact my future as a personal trainer, and as an athlete.”

Chantelle Hobson - Agriculture “I knew I’d like this course but I like it even more than I thought. The best part so far is moving the animals, the quad bike, and learning about stock rotation. We learn by actually doing and from the other students when we work together. We’re all gaining confidence and experience.”
