DISCOVER DOUBTLESS BAY

Walk down from your accommodation to a soft, sandy white beach stretching into the distance. Laze the day away watching the young ones explore rock pools or splash in the breakers. Doubtless Bay and surrounding area has many fine walks (both easy and difficult) Manganui, Coopers Beach, Cable Bay and Taipa Heritage Trail of Mangonui Beginning and ending at the historic Mangonui Courthouse, the Heritage Trail provides a glimpse of the great wealth of Māori and European history associated with this area. The trail is three kilometres long and accessible on foot or partly by vehicle. The average time it takes to walk the trail is one and a half hours. Walkers are advised to take the St. Andrew’s Walkway to access sites high up above the waterfront and enjoy the spectacular views from near St. Andrew’s Church. Rangikapiti Pa, Mangonui A visit to Rangikapiti Pa (accessible by car or on foot from Rangikapiti Road) will reward

you with panoramic views over Mangonui Harbour and the whole of Doubtless Bay. It is a 5 minute walk from the car park to the top of the Pa but there is no disabled access.

Coopers Beach It can take 40 minutes return, to walk the full length of this beautiful beach which is fully accessible except for high tide. There is beach access at the eastern end at the bottom of Kotare Drive, half-way along just east of Coopers Beach Shopping Centre and from Taumararuumaru Reserve, by foot only, at the western end.

Gum Hole Reserve Walk From State Highway 10, follow Inland Road for 2km to a small roadside parking area. This short (2 minute return) walk is metalled and even. It loops through manuka scrub growing close to the track and has information boards along the way. The walk passes a series of holes excavated by gum diggers.

Taumararumaru D.O.C. Reserve The reserve land includes three defended pa sites and related archaeological features. The walking track around the reserve provides access to those sites and offers stunning views. The track is accessed from the D.O.C. car park on State Highway 10, almost opposite the bowling club. The walk around the full reserve takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes. Cable Bay to Taipa It is possible to walk around the rocks at low tide. It is approximately 1 hour walk and

‘Coca Cola’ Lake There is an easy walk along the shoreline of the lake which can be found at the end of Ramp Road, near to the settlement. Ramp Road leaves Inland Road approx. 3.5km from State Highway 10. It is then approximately 1.6km to the settlement. Puheke Recreation Reserve Walk From State Highway 10, follow Inland Road for 10.5km and then turn left into Rangiputa Road. After 2km, turn right into Puheke Road. Continue to the parking area at the beach along the unsealed road. You can climb the hill for a superb view of the white

sandy beaches of Karikari Bay - Puheke Bay to the east and Karikari Beach to the west - and off to Doubtless Bay and the Aupouri Peninsula. From the parking area it is about a 40 minute return climb. However, in a 4x4 vehicle you can access a higher car park for a shorter walk. Matai Bay to Whangatupere Bay The walk takes you from the D.O.C. camp ground at Matai Bay along Merita Beach (the southern of the two coves), around both points to Poroa Stream (one hour return). From there you can make the more difficult walk following the stream for 30 minutes. At the signpost, turn left up the steep, slippery hill to Paraawanui Trig (20 minutes return). The best views are from a little past the summit (142m.). Retrace your steps to the signposts. After 15 minutes along a vehicle track, you come to a crossroads. Turn left at the signposts from where it is 10 minutes to Whagatupere Bay. This is a rocky bay with azure waters and steep forested cliffs tumbling to the water. The entire walk is a three hour return trip. You should contact the D.O.C. office in Kaitaia (Phone: 09 408 6014) before commencing the walk.

The history of Doubtless Bay back to 900AD

B

y Maori tradition the first man to arrive in New Zealand in 900AD was Kupe. His canoe or waka, perhaps named Mamaru, made its landing in Doubtless Bay at Taipa, a name referring to the fence built to divide the rich shellfish beds between two contending Maori chiefs. Kupe’s landing at Taipa has been commemorated by a

monument representing his waka rolling in on the Pacific waves. There were many more early Maori settlements near the northern end of the Karikari Peninsula (Rangiaohia). These were the ancestors of the local tribe Ngati Kahu, who today have twenty-one Marae (meeting houses) in the Doubtless Bay area. At Mangonui, the Ruakaramea canoe was guided into the harbour by a shark. Its chief, Moehuri, named the harbour Mangonui, which means ‘large shark’. For over a thousand years this area has supported local Māori with its many native plant and animal species, fish and shellfish. Many prominent land features such as Rangikapiti Pā reflect their cultural heritage. In December 1769 Captain James Cook of the ‘Endeavour’ sailed past the entrance to Doubtless Bay, recording in his journal that it was ‘doubtless a bay’, hence the name. Only a week later the French ship ‘St Jean Baptiste’ captained by Jean de Surville, took shelter from a storm and anchored in the bay off the northeast shore of Karikari Peninsula, near Whatuwhiwhi. One of the ships anchors is on display in the Museum @ Te Ahu in Kaitaia.

In 1792 the first American whaler, Captain Eber Bunker from Nantucket, came into Doubtless Bay on the ‘William and Ann’. Ever after, whaling ships were active around New Zealand. They called at Russell (Kororareka) in the Bay of Islands and later to the safe and

sheltered harbour of Mangonui. These two small ports welcomed whale men and ships from all over the world. In 1838 an English whaler Captain William Butler settled in Mangonui establishing a trading post on what has been known since as Butler Point, 200 metres across the harbour. Maori played an important role not only in the supply of fresh foods to the port but they were sought after as crew for their skills in navigation, seaworthiness and as harpooners. Nearly 500 whaling ships have been recorded arriving into Mangonui between 1833 and 1894. Records show up to thirty whaling ships here at any one time. Ninety-five percent of the whaling ships were American. There were American and British Consular agents stationed in Mangonui from 1849 to 1878. Alongside the whaling, three other local products were highly valued in world markets: flax, kauri trees and kauri gum. New Zealand flax was of a superior quality and in high demand for rope and weaving materials when manila and sisal were in short supply. With Māori labour and skill, the flax industry flourished. Mangonui’s last flax mill operated at Maori Point into the early 1900s. Flax was also milled at Lake Ohia, at the base of Karikari Peninsula. www.doubtlessbay.co.nz/history/

CABLE BAY STORE

– the coolest ice cream shop with the hottest takeaways. By Kelly Wilde

When the cable bay store came up for sale, I thought that it could be a great opportunity. I contacted the real estate agents, and I was walking through that afternoon. Having a career in baking and business management, when I entered the store my eyes lit up. The previous owner, said she had never seen someone’s face so bright, and she knew I would do great things to her family’s iconic little shop. One month later here I was. The new owner of the Cable Bay store. My vision was clear. Create a great little spot that catered something for everyone and of course, carry on the fame of the great kiwi ice cream on the beach. To be able to bring the kids down for an ice cream. We have 20 tip top flavours to choose from so sometimes it takes a while, but Mum and Dad can enjoy a nice hot coffee so it makes it all worth it. De stress while everyone plays down on Cable Bay beach with the golden sun lingering overhead. Whizzing past for work or just in a hurry, anyone can stop in and grab a sandwich or a fresh toasted panini on the go. A healthy fresh salad, or even an in store made sausage roll or quiche, are on offer every day. The variety changes with

or for the simple dinner, just fresh crispy hot chips. Top it all off with a creamy Vanilla, chocolate dipped waffle cone. Mouth-watering.

you enter the shop. Encouraged to make your visit an experience, with a little cheek from most of us, you all will leave smiling.

The whole family can enjoy a beautifully fresh cooked takeaway dinner, the burgers are to die for! I think that I’ll get the cheeseburger, but the ever so popular chicken burger wins every time, served on a buttery brioche bun with that southern style crispy chicken, it’s a must have. Or fresh fish, what ever is in stock at the time or just some loaded fries, loaded wedges. Yum!

The Cable Bay Store team is the real magic. Women and men who share the same passion as me. I surround myself with a fantastic team, they share the same crazy visions, all humouring me and going along with trialling all sorts of new, weird and wonderful (and sometimes not wonderful) ideas. Past and present employees all have a certain wonderful vibe about them when

Being a very outgoing and creative woman, I have and will come up with loads more to offer our community. Stop in and say hi, have a look around at our newly renovated shop and our awesome new dining area. Grab a bite to eat, sit and enjoy the ever so stunning view of Cable Bay Beach. Cable Bay was named after the cable station that was operating from 1902 till 1912, we boost a little bit of history on our wall, you can pop in to see that original cable hanging on the wall. Jointly owned by Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand and spanned 3458 nautical miles, all in morse code. Times have changed slightly and instead of a cable and morse code you can contact us on Facebook or Instagram where we have a ever growing community of people keeping an eye on what we have going on around the place.
