Fancy a walk across some of NZ’s most pristine beaches, with sand so white it makes your eyes water? How about a trek amongst towering dunes, past ancient archaeological sites of past civilisations? Why not stroll across a meandering boardwalk, traversing a wetland lagoon teaming with birdlife. Then end your day with a glass of wine or a well-earned cuppa, nestled amongst verdant native bush, or under the shade of a grove of spreading pohutukawa, watching seabirds swooping in and out of a seemingly endless ocean. Sound like you? Then it’s time to dig out the sleeping bag, dust off those walking shoes, pack the car, the kids, the ﬁshing gear and the camera, and heard North until you hit the Te Paki Reserves.

Cape Reinga Already internationally famous as the location of Te Rerenga Wairua (Cape Reinga) – one of NZ’s most iconic culturally and ecologically signiﬁcant places, Te Paki Reserve also encompasses one of the most diverse multi day tracks in the country – the Te Paki Coastal Track. Traversing an incredible array of spectacular topography, including wetlands, coastal forests, dune and beaches, it also boasts four different camping spots ranging from ‘foot admission only’ to easy driving access. If four days is a bit long, then the good news is that most sections can be tackled as a pleasant day walk. And you don’t have to be Bear Grylls to walk the Te Paki tracks. Although there are a few hills that will give your ham strings a good work out, most of it is undulating or ﬂat, with large sections involving strolling along a beach! And of course being the Far North, the weather is still warm enough for camping right through Autumn and even Winter

(with a warmer sleeping bag) –no biting frosts or snow up here! The three hour return walk across the Waitahora Lagoon to Pandora Bay is a pleasant and achievable experience and the new facilities at nearby Kapowairua (Spirits Bay) campground, with its smart toilet and shower block, are impressive – much more than you would expect from a basic campground. And seeing the banks of the lagoon covered in ﬂowering native hibiscus is deﬁnitely a highlight. Pandora Bay is a popular lunch spot. Fortunately the dotterels, oyster catchers and pied stilts are not too put out at having to share the beach with other two legged visitors! You can easily spend several days exploring. Choose a camp and do day walk excursions, or overnight at Pandora or Twilight. Or take on the whole track. There are no huts to book, so if a particular spot is too hard to leave then you can just decide to stay longer.

Recently upgraded by DOC, the new track system provides walkers with a steady grade and loop walks of various lengths, taking you from beaches to fantastic viewpoints. The island walks feature as part of the new Bay of Islands Walking Weekend from 29th September to 5th October 2014. www.boiwalkingweekend.co.nz The island is rich in history. Originally occupied by Ngare Raumati then Ngapuhi, recent archaeological excavations show where these early people lived, grew food and defended their island home. There are eight signiﬁcant pa sites, with all but one on headlands facing the sea. Today these pa sites form the Urupukapuka Island Archaeological Walk, the only one of its kind in New Zealand, which takes about 5 hours to complete but can be broken into two loops. Urupukapuka, the largest of seven islands in the Bay of Islands is just over 200km north of Auckland. You can catch a boat from Paihia or Russell to Otehei Bay or take your own vessel. It has three popular campgrounds with basic facilities (cold showers and composting toilets) at Urupukapuka, Cable and Sunset Bays. Book your campsite by going on-line at www.doc.govt.nz

Mt Manaia Mount Manaia is one of a cluster of jagged, bush-covered hills at the entrance of the spectacular Whangarei Harbour. The spiralling walk up this bush-clad mountain leads to a spectacular view of the harbour, coastline and offshore islands at the Bluff lookout. The eroded skeleton of an andesite cone, Mt Manaia is 16 – 22 million years old! Rare bush and exposed rocky ridge plants can be found along with birdlife similar to offshore island groups. Many legends surround the mountain and its dramatic rock summit 403 metres above sea level – which is thought to be the chief Manaia (largest peak) and his family of children (smaller pinnacles) and his unfaithful wife (last rock ‘facing away’ from Manaia.) Your walk starts with a steady climb from the car park. Take it slow as the gradient gets steeper and enjoy the views which get more spectacular the higher you climb, with the Bluff lookout rewarding you with great vistas of Bream Head and the Hen and Chicken Islands. The Mount Manaia track is 2 ½ to 3 hrs return.

Trounson Kauri Park, on Northland’s west coast just off SH12 about 30 minutes north of Dargaville, is a 586-hectare forest reserve restoration project. This “mainland island” has a focus on learning and enabling the public to enjoy a glimpse of Northland kauri forest like it once was. Stately kauri, taraire, kauri grass, kiekie, neinei and ferns dominate the vegetation. Fallen kauri and the resulting light wells, clear streams and filmy ferns add to the mystic experience. A key element in the Department of Conservation’s success to date has been the intensive work undertaken to control predators and browsers such as possums, rodents, mustelids and feral cats. Importantly, the reserve is home to several threatened species, such as North Island brown kiwi, kūkupa (NZ pigeon), pekapeka (bats) and kauri snails. The recently upgraded boardwalk on the easy 40-minute loop track is suitable for strollers. It leads you through a spectacular stand of kauri, giving you the opportunity to experience the unique character of this ancient forest. You can learn more about the kauri forest at the interpretation kiosk and trees and plants are named along the walk. A 2 hour guided night-walk is available so you can experience the sights and sounds of the forest after dark – Kiwi, Morepork, glowworms, weta, kokapu small native freshwater fish, Kauri snails and eels. Kauri roots are extremely sensitive to trampling. Along the track, steps have been taken to protect the delicate root structure of the kauri and prevent the spread of kauri dieback disease. Stay on the tracks at all times to ensure no damage is done to these magnificent trees. At the entrance and exit to the park are barrel and grate boot cleaning systems – an important management tool in reducing the spread of disease.
