Northland Field Days

No porkies here; they’re for real Wild pork mini pies will be the latest tasty treat designed to entice visitors to the Northland Regional Council marquee at the upcoming Northland Field Days in Dargaville. In recent years, the regional council has successfully used a variety of wild food treats — most made from pests — as a fun way to attract visitors. Council chairman Bill Shepherd says previous wild food treats have included possum burgers, pies and pate, goat meat pies, wild rabbit sausages and even wasp larvae ice cream. This year will again see a pest (wild pigs) turned into something edible: wild pork mini pies. Thirty-five kilogrammes of wild pork meat has been sourced locally from an approved butcher and, over the next few days, will be baked into mini pies by Whangarei’s Regency Pies. Mr Shepherd says they’ll be served over the three days of the February 26-28 Field Days from the council’s usual location — Site 251 in the newly-renamed Fonterra Farm Source Road (previously RD1 Road). The pies are a light-hearted way to boost visitor numbers to the council marquee to view displays and speak to staff about the more serious side of the regional council’s work. “This year, the marquee will have twin ‘Working Together’ and ‘Taking Action’ themes,” Mr Shepherd says. “We’ll have activities for visitors to participate in and learn how to take action on a wide range of topics, including pest plants and animals, land and lake management and kauri dieback disease.” He says in a first for council, it also planned to sell a range of traps for pests, including possums,

Charmaine says the field days have innovations for all sectors of the community. “If you work and live a rural lifestyle expect to see new products and services launched here. If you are in business, you’ll see businesses drive and network with each other and the community.

Facilities set to get better and better Visitors to the 2015 event can expect a higher level of comfort and convenience after improvements to the event grounds. Next year, visitors will be able to access the field days via a pedestrian friendly walkway, purchasing tickets from newer, smarter gate facilities and, once inside, enjoy the convenience and comfort of a new permanent

toilet block. “The Northland Field Days events ground has slowly been improved and added to over the past 10 years,” says president Lew Duggan. “While a toilet block and better pedestrian access will be the most ambitious changes to date, they pale next to the improvements we have planned in the near future.”

Northland Field Days

RACING: If you have never experienced a sheeplechase then you need to head to Dargaville on February 26-28.

Chance to see sheep on run Woolly racers provide the height of entertainment in a jam-packed Northland Field Days

Check out some shooting. What about having a go on a 4WD track? And don’t miss the “sheeplechase’’. There will be plenty for people to do see and experience at this year’s Northland Field Days from February 26-28 in Dargaville, say organisers. Exhibitors and the events committee have been working overtime to search for more new events than ever, says Northland Field Days president Lew Duggan, who adds visitors who travel to the event in Dargaville between February 26-28 will be able to enjoy a mix of new and old events. Hunters and target shooters will be able to show off their sharpshooting skills throughout the show, say organisers of the digital claybird shooting event.

Friday and Saturday will be jampacked with activities, too, with organisers organising the return of the Sheep'n'Show event, a combination of sheep racing, sheep shearing and more. Previously appearing at the America's Cup Village, the Royal Easter Show and the Aotea Centre, the Sheep’n’Show team hosts the “grand national sheeplechase” complete with full commentary, prerace build-up and the ability to win prizes by selecting the winning sheep. Sheep’n’Show owner Greg Clark will also do 45-minute shearing shows. Northland Toyota will be building a 4WD track next to their site for the first time in Northland Field Days’

history, making it possible for anybody interested in getting a Toyota 4WD the opportunity to experience it in some real world conditions. Northland Toyota sales consultant Nigel Gilmour says people trying out a new model Toyota Hilux, Land Cruiser or Rav4 on the 4WD course should expect to be put through their paces. “It’s got some axle twisters in there, there’s some water, some hills and sidings on it. “Customers will experience challenging approach and departure angles right from the passenger’s seat.” The company has introduced the track to reaffirm the Toyota Hilux’s position as a workhorse, says Mr Gilmour, by giving visitors the opportunity to try out the track in conditions they are likely to experience on a daily basis. “Our aim is to get people back into vehicles to

Northland

show them what sort of performance they are capable of in tough conditions,” he says. “We have always made sure the Hilux stayed true to its origins and was able to do what it needs to do when the work demands.” With numerous competitions including: lawnmower races, dog trials, and tractor pull and logger sports to mention a few, the Northland Field Days Committee has arranged something for everyone. “The events committee has outdone themselves this year,” says Mr Duggan. “Anybody travelling to Dargaville between February 26-28 will miss out if they don’t attend the Northland Field Days.” Free parking is available close to the showgrounds with regular public transport running to and from the event. ■ Check out the Northland Field Days website: http:// www.northlandfielddays.co.nz.

Northland Field Days

New devices sure to please Visitors to the 2015 Northland Field Days can expect to see and learn about more than ever this year with exhibitors offering a wide range of new vehicles, tools and information at the 2015 event More than 450 exhibitors have signed up for Northland Field Days and many of them have promised new devices never seen before in New Zealand, says event co-ordinator Meagan Edmonds. Exhibitors rushed to book a spot this year, said Edmonds, who saw more than 90 per cent of the grounds fill in under seven months. “Exhibitors got involved quickly for this event,” she said. Companies have also made plans to bring their biggest, brightest and latest machinery and products to the event, with many companies talking about launching brand-new inventions. Fast-growing farm machinery company Mahindra will use the Northland Field Days to launch three new vehicles; the Mahindra mForce 100p, the company’s first 100hp tractor in New Zealand and a new 20hp tractor. Cervus Northland manager Tim Ormond says John Deere also has plans for the event which he hopes will be the

launching spot of a completely new transmission system. Exhibitors will also allow visitors to get hands-on with implements, says Edmonds, adding that several of the companies have also discussed the possibility of having live demonstrations at the event. Edmonds says a wide range of exhibitors have signed up with heaps of products to show off and more has been done to improve the experience of visitors looking for food, ornaments and tools for the home. A new entrance and an increase in the number of facilities will make attending the event even more comfortable say organisers. Visitors will also be able to access money easily at the event, thanks to the presence a four ATM facility at the site. Event sponsors ANZ will be coming back with their fourATM unit and two mobile units which organisers say will make shopping easy. Early interest has also been

Northland Field Days

Students allowed to roll up their sleeves A select group of Northland secondary school students will have a chance to experience the infrastructure, quarrying, forestry and agriculture industries at the Northland Field Days this year, says Youth Into Industry representatives. Thirty-two high schools students from the Kaipara, Whangarei, Lower Far North and Rodney districts will learn the ins and outs of operating diggers, trucks and construction equipment as part of a drive to increase the awareness of the professional career paths offered within these industries. Alistair McIntyre, author of the famous children’s book Doug the Digger and founder of the Youth into Industry initiative, says he wants to give Northland school leavers a look into potential career options. “Students are given an opportunity to work alongside industry representatives in a safe, supportive worksite environment to gain knowledge that helps them make informed decisions on their future careers and what they need to do to achieve their personal goals.” The event will be held on the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club site at the Northland Field Days on Thursday, February 26, with Mr McIntyre calling it a truly collaborative experience for everyone involved.

ON HAND: Alistair McIntyre oversees student Logan Collings having a go at the controls.

He floated the idea with the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club at the end of the 2014 Field Days, at a wrap-up barbecue, where it was strongly welcomed by all members. Mr McIntyre and the club patron, Bruce

Galloway, then approached the Northland Field Days committee about the potential of hosting a careers open day at their 2015 event, quoting a similar careers day held at Auckland’s MOTAT (Museum of Transport and

PHOTO/TED BAGHURST

Technology) in 2014, which was extremely successful. “Thirtyone eager students turned up who were so keen, they ignored several rain showers to carry on with activities.” Northland Field Days’

president Lew Duggan said the committee jumped in almost immediately, as it felt the day would be an excellent way to get Northland’s youth involved in some of the region’s fastest growing industries. “We offer Northland’s youth scholarships to study agriculture, therefore the ‘Youth Into Industry’ initiative was a perfect fit for us,” he said. “We are really looking forward to seeing some of the area’s brightest students at the Northland Field Days learning about New Zealand’s most exciting and essential industries.” The Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club won’t only offer space but club members will assist as tutors as well as being involved in various other supportive roles. Students will learn lessons in eight categories including Health and Safety compliance, workplace safety awareness, weights and measures, vehicle safety compliances as well as operating mini excavators, and small plant and equipment. Mr McIntyre says each category consists of two activities with industry representatives sharing their knowledge about their specific areas of expertise and helping students complete associated paperwork.

Northland Field Days

Early workers a hardy bunch Farming and forestry were hard work back in the day, as these photos from the Drummond/ Te Wake historical photo archives show

HEAVY LOAD: A steam-powered hauler made life a little easier for early forestry workers.

STARK EXISTENCE: A bush camp in Mangakahia, 1909. Many early settlers developed their farms with money earned in the kauri bush and digging for gum. The photo includes several Broadwood pioneers. The name Mangakahia translates as manga (stream) and kahia (or kohia) the New Zealand passionfruit vine.

FOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND: Driving cattle on the beach at Doubtless Bay in 1902. The bay was named on December 19, 1769, by Lieutenant James Cook, because the wind did not allow his ship to enter it. Just eight days later, French explorer Jean de Surville sailed into the bay and named it Lauriston Bay. SETTLERS’ FARM: Circa 1870s, Northland. During the early 1850s, large areas of Crown land were made available under Williamson’s Forty-acre Scheme, which entitled an adult immigrant on payment of his own fare from Britain to a grant of 40 acres, plus 40 for his wife and 20 for each member of his family aged between 5 and 18 years.

LADS AT THE MILL: Workers line up for a picture in front of an early timber mill in the Wheki Valley, Maungatapere, date unknown. Wheki Valley was extensively milled during the late 1800s and early 1900s.

There’s only one place to go at Northland Field Days. Don’t look left or right, head straight to the Farmlands site at Northland Field Days on 26-28 February. That’s where you’ll find never to be repeated deals, great instant prizes and your chance to WIN the ultimate man cave set-up worth $5,000*. See you there, at sites 148 and 150!

*Visit www.farmlands.co.nz/competitions for terms and conditions.

SHEEP SHEARERS: Northland farm workers on the job circa early 1900s, location unknown.
