OUR REGIONAL

YOUTH ADVISORY GROUP The 15 members of the Whangarei District Council’s Youth Advisory Group (YAG) have made a commitment to represent you through discussing, debating and developing ideas relating to youth and making sure these are heard by Council. Members work to carry out this responsibility by staying connected with youth in schools, clubs, groups and the wider community, and keeping informed of local youth issues. The group meets at least monthly and advises Council by making submissions to Plans, Policies and providing WDC staff with feedback on proposed Council activities that affect youth, such as recreation, transportation and employment opportunities. Members come from throughout the District, (Waipu, Ruakaka, Hikurangi, Ngunguru, Maungatapere and Whangarei city) and attend a variety of secondary schools: Tauraroa Area School, Bream Bay College, Correspondence school, Whangarei Boys’ and Girls’ High schools and Huanui College. They are engaged in many cultural and sporting activities and represent several cultural and ethnic groups living in our community.

E PAG 4

In 2014, the Youth Advisory Group successfully launched the inspirational Whangarei Youth Awards to acknowledge and celebrate the contribution our rangatahi make to the District, which will be held again in December this year. The YAG supports other activities that empower youth finding their voice in the community, such as the annual Youth Summit and projects arising from it, and the annual national Youth Week celebrations. This year the YAG will be at the Whangarei Central Library to promote Youth Week on Saturday 23rd May. With this year’s theme being “‘We are the future/Ko- ta-tau te ao o a-po-po-”, they are keen to talk with as many youth as possible about their vision for the future of Whangarei.

More information on the YAG can be found on https://www.facebook.com/ ShapeYourCity

5 MOBILE DEVICES IDEAL FOR TEENAGE DRIVERS AND PEACE OF MIND FOR PARENTS! Many parents worry when their teens start to drive. Distracted driving, inexperience and simple carelessness are all reasons for parents to be concerned. The added distraction of a cell phone and all its available functions bring even more reasons to worry. While it would be great if parents could keep a watchful eye every time a teenager is behind the wheel, it's just not possible. In this age of technology, can parents have more peace of mind when their newly licensed teenage driver is on the road? "Parents can make use of vehicle monitoring devices," says Chris Kersting, president and CEO of the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA). The trade association represents the $33 billion automotive specialty equipment industry that includes thousands of products that are available to enhance a vehicle's styling, performance, comfort and convenience. "These devices can help relieve some parents' anxieties about their teen driver and can even improve teen driving habits." Here are some devices to consider for anyone who wants to keep tabs on teenagers behind the wheel. Bluetooth While you don't want your teen texting while driving, it's equally as important to make sure

that he's not talking with his phone glued to his ear. A vehicle with Bluetooth capabilities will ensure a safer hands-free experience - not to mention you can call him knowing he can answer you without taking his hands off the wheel or his eyes off the road. GPS tracker You can easily track a vehicle's movement using a GPS tracker. These handy devices can be mounted in any car, sometimes using only a magnet, and will report back to your computer or smartphone. Advanced features include alerts letting you know if your teenager is driving out of a pre-designated area. Trackers typically require a monthly subscription service fee. Plug-in diagnostic port adapters These plug into your vehicle's onboard diagnostic port (OBDII). The OBDII connects to the car's brain and when accessed, can provide a plethora of information on how the car is being driven. Numerous plug-in adapters are available to monitor driving habits and gather reports, including speed monitoring, harsh braking, location displays and more. Most adapters also require a service subscription in order to provide text or email alerts on activities you wish to monitor.(BPT)

TOP TWO TRACKS FOR A SCHOOL BALL?

CHEESY PICK UP LINE TO AVOID?

Date advice…. How to ask your date to the Ball? Do your research. To avoid embarrassment, find out first if there is a chance that this person would want to go to the ball with you. Get a mate that you trust to ask a few subtle questions to them to gage the vibe. If it’s a good vibe, then go and ask them. If it’s not a good vibe, then ask yourself if you want to work hard to try and change their mind.I prefer the old school method of asking face to face rather than dropping them a txt. And boys, it may sound cheesy but asking with a rose will help your chances.

Im glad you asked this because im going to answer with what dance moves NOT to use at the ball... Fellahs - Please under no circumstances bust out the dougie in EVERY song unless it’s in ‘teach me how to dougie.’ It’s just wrong and old. In saying that same goes for any other dance move that goes with a song, only use it when the song plays. And if you happen to bust out into some old school waltzing, don’t forget it’s a mans job to lead, just don’t stand on their feet. Ladies – Keep it classy, just like with the boys, you don’t have to twerk to EVERY song. When it’s appropriate, then drop it. Take note, if you’re going to “drop it low” or take things up a notch with your dance moves be mindful of those heels that you’re wearing. We don’t want you to fall on your back or flat on your face.

JO NEWCOMBE LOVES LEARNING AT NORTHTEC

Jo Newcombe hated school. She left at 12, refusing to go back. Now she’s planning to be a tax accountant. The difference, says Jo, has been coming to NorthTec at 16 and being treated as an adult. Jo said: “I thought school was hell on wheels. School’s great for making you feel dumb. Then my mum saw the youth programmes here at NorthTec. She signed me up, kicked me out of the car and said ‘off you go’.” At NorthTec Jo found a very different environment, thanks to her “incredibly helpful” tutors: “It’s nothing like school. You’re treated like you are a person who wants to learn, not like a kid. NorthTec never makes you feel dumb.” Jo worked her way through Foundation Studies levels 2 and 3, then Academic Studies level 4. She has now taken the huge step to start a two-year NZ Diploma in Business, majoring in accountancy.

To her surprise, she also loves her law classes. She said: “I would never have expected to be OK with sitting in a classroom all day. It works for me because the atmosphere is right the tutors are people and they treat you like people.” Now she plans to continue studying at NorthTec, and is aiming for a career as a tax accountant. She has pride in herself and wants to succeed. Jo said: “The best thing is I can say to people that I’m educated. You want to be someone, and to be important, and to be able to have a say in society. I’m on my stepping stones towards being something and being someone.”

SEAN HAWES

FOCUSES ON ENGINEERING

Sean had always had a talent for working with his hands, and had his sights set on a job in an engineering-related field. When he came to NorthTec at 17 he opted for the vocational programme which specialised in automotive studies. There he was able to pick up a broad range of skills to set him on the path to his career. “It was a good programme and I learned a lot,” he said. “Our tutor was really good as well – he’s a very easy person to get along with.” After completing his year-long vocational programme, Sean decided to take his studies further, so he could try for an apprenticeship. He is currently doing a level 4 programme in engineering fabrication, to boost his chances and put him ahead of other young hopefuls. With friends and contacts in the local engineering sector, Sean is optimistic of getting an apprenticeship in his chosen field, and just to make sure, he’s about to start approaching potential employers. He says his studies at NorthTec have helped him decide on his career path. “I just enjoyed the welding, and this programme has definitely helped. I knew I wanted to do something in the engineering area, and this has made it clear what I want to do.”

Sean Hawes, left and Asher Lafaele-Edwards both started on a youth programme, and are now heading towards a career in engineering

YOUTH SPACE

LEADING CHANGE, INSPIRING FUTURES Youth Space Mission: • Establish a youth space to provide social and recreational activities, improve access to services including health, education and training, and increase youth development, participation, and employment • To provide leadership and support to collectively bring about social change HISTORY For many years young people in Whangarei and service providers with a youth focus have advocated for a dedicated Youth Space in Whangarei to cater for young people aged between 12-24 years.

In addition, the Youth Group were supported to continue to participate in the initiative development and to undertake introductory governance training. An initial business case for the concept of Youth Space in Whangarei was developed. In late 2012 an establishment grant was received from the ASB Community Trust enabling the appointment of a project manager and further development of the concept. A project steering group was established, and the membership was further extended to ensure appropriate representation and participation.

The inaugural Youth Space Youth Group have continued to meet and guide the project. “UNFORGETTABLE

FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE” LOUIS HEWITT-COLLINS’ EXCHANGE TO CHILE My exchange took me to Chile, to a city called Rancagua, one hour south of Santiago. Rancagua is predominantly a mining city. I don’t have one best thing about my exchange, but I have many. One of the things that stood out for me was the fantastic families and friends I made. I also met many other exchange students throughout my year, and because we were going through the same things together, we became close friends. Another high point was my trip to Easter Island which was an amazing experience. Seeing the Easter Island statues or Moai Heads was incredible, and it was made better because we were shown around the island by people from Rotary. It is a beautiful place with lovely beaches and awesome sea life. Learning another language and becoming fluent in Spanish has been a huge highlight for me. RACHEL BOYD’S STORY: It turns out I was wrong about almost everything I thought my year in Brazil would be, what I discovered there wasn’t really something I could have imagined before I

left and not really something I can describe now that I’m back either. It was like a window was opened into an entirely new world, I lived my life as a Brazilian, learning their culture, their beliefs, and their way of life, and suddenly I understood the world a little bit better. I mastered another language - which believe me, makes you feel like you can do anything. I swam with pink dolphins, cuddled sloths, had so many adventures and met some people that changed my life forever. TARRA NEEDHAM’S STORY: My Rotary Youth Exchange year in Söderköping, Sweden was the best year of my life so far and I could not of asked for a better one. Throughout my year I have matured, gained confidence and most importantly made friends for life, friends from all around the world! I visited over 10 new countries that I barely knew a thing about, learnt about the culture and traditions in those countries and most importantly in Sweden. “You don’t realize what you’ve got until its gone” that quote played a huge part while I was away, as much as I loved Sweden and having my own exciting life over there one of the big things I

Northlanders share their Rotary Exchange stories from 2014 realized as soon as I stepped into my new ‘home’ was how amazing my own country is and all the people in it, and I have definitely gained a whole lot more respect for everyone and everything in it. So overall my year away was the best thing that happened to me, and 1000 times better than I had expected, I would recommend an exchange to almost anyone.

This vision encompasses all aspects of being a good citizen in our community from academic, sporting and cultural competencies to doing the right thing at the right time because it is the right thing to do. The school’s long history of 134 years, and the respect for those who have been part of the school in the past inspires our students to do well and to respect these values. In catering for the wide range of students who attend Whangarei Boys’ High School we have outstanding academic programmes for the most gifted – the recent success of a Year 13 student gaining one of the top 10 places in New Zealand academically in 2014 and he will have his award presented to him by the Governor General in early May. We also offer programmes in work skills and construction for boys in Years 12 and 13 who have an interest in those areas and who work outside the normal school timetable, working in the community, achieving their standards and work experience in the process. There are a wide range of sports, at last count, some 42 codes being offered in the school and many of these students are representing the school at regional, national and international levels.

On the cultural side we have a very active Kapahaka group combined with WGHS performing regionally and nationally, as well as a long history of success in both Stage Challenge and the Sheila Winn Shakespeare competitions, with students going through to the national arena and some travelling overseas to perform. WBHS was also the regional winner in the local Rockquest competition. The competition between boys is something they thoroughly enjoy and apart from competition against other schools through sporting and cultural events, we also have interwhanau house competitions which is a keenly fought series of events encompassing sports, singing, speech and academic. 2015 is proving to be a very successful year for the school with the school roll at 1221 – this being the highest the school has experienced and we still have students arriving every day to be part of our great tradition and success. The school is well connected with the wider community with the Carruth Boarding Hostel, very active Parent Teacher Association, Kootuku ki te Rangi (Maori Parent Group) and the Old Boys’ Association, and generous sponsors, the school enjoys serving the community and the support it receives from the parents and wider community.

BREAM BAY COLLEGE

PROVIDES EDUCATION APPROPRIATE TO ITS STUDENTS’ CURRENT AND FUTURE NEEDS. We expect our students to enjoy learning and to be fully engaged in their classes. Learning programmes are differentiated and personalised where possible. Students at our College can expect to be challenged academically and as a whole they achieve results in the national examinations that are above national averages at NCEA level 1, 2 and 3.

The College is a relationship based school with well-defined behavioural practices based around restorative practice principles. Teachers care and are genuinely interested in their students. Students learn best when relationships are strong.

Citizenship is an interwoven strand throughout all that we do with digital citizenship becoming a very important focus area. Students are fully engaged in the wider life of the school through our citizenship programmes that focus on leadership, service, sportsmanship and commitment.

1) To create deeper learning through the use of appropriate technology. We currently encourage all students to have a device up to year 10 and a laptop from year 10 onwards. This will be an expectation in 2016. This will allow us (staff and students) to use the technology to collaborate, create and publish along with use it for simulations, etc. We are also exploring 3D printing and its uses.

As a Health Promoting School we involve all of our students in determining the College’s Senior Health programs and encourage a wide range of participation in physical activity along with healthy eating. The College’s House structure provides 5 Whanau groups within each house that compete in the inter house competitions. The House DPs, Deans and Whanau teachers play an important role in mentoring and monitoring the students’ progress throughout their time at the college. Our students’ DP, Dean and Whanau teacher remain the same throughout their time at the college and each whanau group is made up of students from year 7 to 13.

2) To eliminate areas that have previously been barriers to learning such as ADHD and dyslexia through the use of Feuerstein type interventions. Brain research has come a long way and the phrase now is “don’t let genetics define you.” If a brain is wired in a way that causes dyslexia or ADHD then to remedy this we need to create new neural pathways that mitigate the effects. These interventions are about creating these neural pathways.

The locations are diverse: Tangihua Lodge, Rawhiti Marae, Auckland City, and Tongariro National Park, to name a few. YOUTH AND DRIVING One death or serious injury of a young person on our roads, is one too many. In the 12 months to May 5, 74 people aged 15 – 25 years died on New Zealand roads. During the weekend of May 9 – 10 this year, 10 people died in crashes around the country. This was the worst weekend for fatal crashes for a number of years. Fortunately no-one was killed or seriously injured in Northland that weekend, but we need to remain vigilant. It is a terrible tragedy to lose someone in a crash that could be preventable, but the loss of a young life is always felt very keenly by that person’s friends, family and other community members.

Legislation has been brought in over recent years has helped reduce the number of young people killed and injured on our roads. This has included graduated driver licensing and zero alcohol for under-20 drivers. However, young people still need to be aware of the factors that can lead to tragedy while driving. Speed is one of the most significant causes of crashes in Northland. People make mistakes, so choose a safe speed under the limit, which will give you more time to react. No matter what causes a crash, the outcome depends on your speed.

Alcohol is still a factor in many crashes. If you’re out with your mates plan to stay the night or get a ride home with a sober driver. Remember alcohol can stay in your blood stream for quite a while, so just because you’ve had a few hours sleep after drinking doesn’t mean you can drive. Be a legend – stop friends and whanau driving drunk. Inattention, lack of concentration and distraction are other factors. About half the crashes are caused by people who have made a mistake when they were tired, distracted or confused.

If you see any unsafe driving on the road call *555 (or 111 if life is at risk). Police will respond Our roads are windy and sometimes narrow. Many to any types of risky behaviour including high risk drivers, slow drivers and drivers of the roads are gravel and they are unforgiving using cellphones. when you make the slightest mistake.

THE NORTHLAND

RUGBY UNION SUPPORTS SCHOOLS IN NORTHLAND INTRO The support Northland Rugby Union receives from schools is essential to our future and we could not value it more.

Richie Harris and this is what he has to say having just arrived here in Whangarei.

We have invited more than 50 schools over the last three years to attend the Toll stadium to support the mighty Taniwha during the ITM Cup. Various companies have sponsored these schools and their presence has made a huge difference to the atmosphere at game day. The Advocate are a fine supporter of the union and we both want to continue this trend of schools attending these superb home games. We have a very exciting season ahead with a new coach called

A WORD FROM RICHIE HARRIS Kia ora When you get to my age, you look back at your life and realise that your school years were some of the most enjoyable years of your life. I’m sure teachers tell you this from time to time when things aren’t going so well. School is changing so quickly today, mostly due to the introduction of technology – computers, cell phones, the internet. However, often the most enjoyable times at school are spent with our mates telling jokes, playing games at lunchtime and playing sport. I believe playing sport important making play pl ayin ay ing sp in spor ortt is sso or o im impo port po rtan rt antt in m an akin ak ing g

us better people. Of course I love rugby, but playing any sport is so important in today’s world.

All the best with your time at school, get involved in sport and enjoy your time.

Through my work and sport, I’ve been lucky enough to travel throughout the world. Another thing you realise is that we live in a wonderful country … the best country. Open spaces, clean, peaceful, good people. Since moving to Northland from the big city these have become even more obvious. What a beautiful part of the country Northland is.

Kia toa.

Kia kaha,

Northland ITM Coach, Director of Rugby

So at my age, I look forward to the life in front of me and realise how lucky I am to be involved in rugby in a beautiful part of the world. th
