Careers Education and Training in Northland June 2014
Whangarei is UFB Connected- Affordable Digital Enablement Training with Northland Inc and Microsoft N.Z
N
orthland Inc in conjunction with Microsoft N.Z. and the Digital Office of Otago have collaborated with local digi-tech companies UIT and Creative Web Ideas, to produce a day’s Digital Enablement Training, targeted towards Northland’s small to medium enterprises. Following the finalised roll out of Ultra-Fast Broadband (UFB) Whangarei has become the first city nationwide, to become totally digitally connected with fibre-optic cabling.
It is imperative that local businesses leverage this competitive edge to profit from Whangarei’s enviable position surrounding Ultra-fast broadband connectivity and the capabilities of fibre optic band-width. Some small to medium enterprises (SME’s) may be aware of the advancement of digital technology but not too sure how best to ‘dip their toes’ into the mass of hi-tech options available to them. Hopefully our ‘Digital enablement training Day’ will answer some of those questions. The training will be kicked off with a presentation from Microsoft N.Z’s small business guru Barry White who will give a key-note presentation on ‘Technology in Tomorrow’s business World’. Barry will edify us with a vision for the future which will include cloud computing, Office 365 and technologies on the horizon that are going to be changing our business lives. Although digital-connectivity is definitely enhanced with UFB, it is not exclusive to it. All businesses across Northland who have access to broadband of any calibre will benefit from the day.
Mike Preece Digital Project Co-ordinator
To elaborate on that, Stuart Roberts from Otago’s Digital Office has devised a specialised tool for businesses to find out how digitally mature they are.
Just copy this link to your browser www.digitaljourney.co.nz to take part in a survey which will provide an analysis that will be discussed during the training. Stuart will pin-point where Northland’s businesses are digitally falling short or conversely, doing well. Complete the survey as soon as you can. UIT’s CEO, Paul Batchelder will be showing businesses how to use the ‘Google Apps for Business’ suite of tools. His session will cover e-mail, calendars, documents, collaboration and device connectivity and touch on data auditing and backups to the cloud. Finally, Jo Couchman, Director of Creative Web Ideas will be addressing WordPress websites, blogging and email newsletters, showing you how manageable and affordable it is to update and manage your own web-sites on-line.
Ultra-fast broadband is not a business tool to be observed from a distance, it needs to be embraced and enabled. The digital age is not a fad that will come and go; a marketing-quirk that you can ride out…it’s a fundamental change to how we operate, maintain and promote our working environments. The digital age allows a business to compete on an international basis from its own back-yard. Sell and market consumer products from a web-site; interact with customers from a blog; keep news items up to date via Twitter; liaise with accountants or banks in the cloud. What excuses are left? The price is right, the venue is booked and a team of experts are waiting. Reactivate your business and be a part of the digital revolution, you will be in very good company.
The training will be held in Whangarei at Toll Stadium’s, NZ Refining Room. (See ad) Time: 09.30-16.00 Date: Thursday June 19th Cost: a staggeringly affordable $20 per person to include buffet lunch.

Regent Training offer automotive courses and more...
Y
oung Northlanders aged from 16-19 years old who left school without their NCEA level 2, now have an opportunity to gain that qualification, and more, in a practical context with Regent Training Centres in Whangarei, Kerikeri and Auckland. Students can choose from a wide range of practical programmes many of which also include National Certificates; automotive, computing, building, community service, hospitality, hairdressing, horticulture and more. When literacy and numeracy subjects such as maths, and English are taught in a work-based or practical context, students find that understanding and learning can come more naturally. Students currently enrolled on the general Automotive and the Automotive Panel and Paint Nation.al Certificate programmes, are in the process of stripping down and completely refurbishing a Nissan Skyline into a drift car. Successful graduates of the programmes will have the opportunity to
drive the drift car and compete at Pukekohe at the end of their course. Students who previously struggled at school say that they are now eager to attend and learn because they are being taught in a “real world”, context that they understand and enjoy. Building and Construction students have recently completed putting together a portable cabin with a deck and have finished building jobs for some needy members of the community unable to carry out the work for themselves. The students on this course are now ready to pursue higher level qualifications upon completion or move into jobs, outcomes that seemed impossible for many this time last year. A number Regent Training Centre’s Computing students were recently invited to become Youth Digital Ambassadors at the local ICT Hub run in Forum North. It was the job of the students to guide local business people and anyone else reliant upon online services, through the use of
the new ultra-fast broadband (UFB) connection. This gave the students an opportunity to demonstrate their IT skills and meet with business people from all over Whangarei. While students were rewarded with a Smart-phone in recognition of their time and expertise, learners felt the best reward came from the opportunity to help others. The opportunity to study these programmes a result of the Government’s Youth Guarantees and Vocational Pathway initiatives designed to give free study options to young people not in education, employment or training (NEET’s). Students gain the benefits of further education without the cost. In many cases learners are also entitled to free transport which provides them with much easier access to RTC programmes. Row Your Art Out!
O
pposites attract they can even be compatible. Eve MacFarlane has found such harmony in two of her favourite pastimes – creativity and sport. Eve studies art and creativity at The Learning Connexion, however you may recognise her from elsewhere. Eve is a competitive rower for New Zealand who is, currently, training for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Living in the Waikato for over three years, Eve’s life revolves around rowing. She trains every day for the better part of a year and competes internationally for three of those months, representing New Zealand at the elite level of rowing. Eve is one of our Kiwi best. In 2012 she competed at the London Olympic games and is definitely “keen to give Rio a good crack”. Since 2011, the self-proclaimed ‘sports freak’ has allowed a change of pace in her life by studying part-time. This allows her imagination and her creative spirit to grow. It gives her a chance to escape the high demands of a professional sports person and apply herself to alternative ways of thinking. For Eve, creativity is an important part of her being, something that she believes keeps her truly living life to the full. “Art for me is also a way to clear my mind, free my spirit and, when I am rowing
full on, art is exactly what I need to keep me alive.” Eve loves to be expressive and her artwork reflects her love for oil paint. “I really enjoy the yummy oils oozing like melted chocolate. It’s all about the process and the chocolate.” Eve responds to colour and mark making with paint, developing a fondness for the palette knife. Painting and printmaking lit the creative spark in Eve during high school, so after graduating she was looking for an art course that was flexible enough to do from home. The Learning Connexion was just the right fit. Eve loves the fact that she can order supplies from the online materials shop and her tutors Andrew Ginther and Donna King create a real enthusiasm that supports her learning. As well as working towards the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympics, Eve is looking forward to beginning the Honours programme at The Learning Connexion when her Diploma is completed later this year. Eve is grateful she has been given the opportunity to balance her life with her two loves: sport and art.The Learning Connexion would like to wish Eve all the best for her rowing ambition. Row for gold Eve!

What young graduates earn when they leave study Author(s): Zaneta Park, Paul Mahoney, Warren Smart, Roger Smyth, Tertiary Sector Performance Analysis, Ministry of Education. This report published May 2014, looks at the outcomes for young people who complete a qualification in the New Zealand tertiary education system. It looks at differences in incomes for different types of qualifications. The information in this report can help young people as they make decisions about what to study. People take tertiary education for many reasons. They think about what they enjoy, what they are good at, what they are capable of and what will get them started on a career. Good careers are associated with better health, better well-being and more satisfying lives. So many young people are making their tertiary education choices to gain the skills they need for satisfying and rewarding work. They use a range of information sources to help them make these choices. The information in this report is designed to add to the data available to young people facing those decisions. This information is not just important to students and to their families. The Government makes a very large investment in tertiary education each year – funding tertiary education providers, providing subsidised student loans and granting student allowances. One major purpose of the Government’s investment is to help improve the New Zealand economy
and society by raising the level of skill in the population – which helps make our society more productive, contributes to the creation of wealth and leads to better social outcomes. Studying the earnings of graduates is one way of looking at the contribution that the tertiary education system is making to New Zealand’s society and economy. So the information in this report contributes to an understanding of the value New Zealand receives for the investment we make in tertiary education.
The key findings are:
and stayed in New Zealand, 35 percent were in employment and 48 percent were taking more study. • Very few young people who complete a qualification at diploma level or above are on a benefit in the first seven years after study. For those who stay in New Zealand, the benefit rate is 6 percent for diploma graduates and 2 percent at bachelors level in each of the first seven years after study. But it is around 14 percent for those who graduated with certificates at levels 1-3.
• Earnings remain consistently higher for those with higher qualifications. Those with higher qualifications consistently earn more for the first seven years post study, with no sign of these benefits decreasing.
• Earnings vary considerably by field of study. Young graduates with bachelors degrees in medicine earn the most of all bachelors graduates. The median income for medical graduates is over $110,300 five years after leaving study, compared to $51,600 for all young bachelors graduates. Bachelors degree graduates in creative arts have the lowest earnings among young bachelors graduates after five years and they have relatively high rates of benefit receipt.
• Employment rates increase with level of qualification gained. For example, in the first year after study, 54 percent of young bachelors graduates who stayed in New Zealand were in employment and 40 percent were in further study. Of young people who had completed a level 1-3 certificate
• Some qualification types and some fields are associated with high rates of further study. Around half of all young people who complete a certificate or level 5-7 diploma move into further study the next year. Around 60 percent of young bachelors graduates in natural
• Earnings increase with the level of qualification completed. The biggest jump in earnings is between those with qualifications below degree level and those with degrees.
and physical sciences who stay in New Zealand were in further study one year after completion of a bachelors degree, and 32 percent after five years. • Those who complete graduate certificates and diplomas have very high employment rates. Employment rates are around 80 percent or just below in the first three years after study for those who have completed a graduate certificate or diploma and who remain in New Zealand. Many of these graduates have completed this qualification as a way of improving their employment prospects or are studying while in employment. • The effect of the recession on the earnings of young graduates is still apparent. Although the country as a whole has pulled out of recession, the effects on young people have lingered with graduate earnings continuing to drop in real terms compared to those reported in our first study, Moving on up, for most years after study and at almost all qualification levels. However, there are indications that the rate of decrease in earnings may have been slowing down for recent graduates by the end of the 2012 tax year. Visit www.educationcounts.govt.nz for more information.
English Language partners
"W
ow – what a success story our first venture into full-time English tuition has been!", said Jenny Huddleston, Manager of English Language Partners Northland. "We started our 20 week National Certificate in English Level 1 programme with 21 learners and we have only ‘lost’ one – and that was because she found employment". The course is now in its final month, and many of the learners are planning to return in July to start their NCEL Level 2, which is exciting for their tutor, Nickie Muir. "I was so pleased that they have made that decision. I’m looking forward to challenging them even more in the next 20 weeks!"
A new Level 1 course is planned to start on July 21st. "We are very lucky to be able to run both courses at the Tai Tokerau Campus of Auckland University. We are hiring two classrooms, so all the learners will be together," said Jenny. "I am really hoping we get enough learners for the Level 1 course. I think we have 5 enrolments so far – and we need 10 to be able to offer the course". Enrolments are open now for both Level 1 and 2. Please contact Jenny urgently if you are interested. Eco Tourism
“W
e’ve visited nearly every bay on Northland’s east coast and now we’re focussing on the rivers. I wanted to figure out where I sit in this environment and I realise I sit in all of it. I really want to work with the whole of the natural environment.” Catherine started her study with Hunting and Pest Control then did a foundation studies course to give her the confidence to learn more. “I love the diversity and depth of this course. It amazes me how stripped of food the sea is
becoming. On the land it’s obvious if something is being depleted but in the ocean the change is less visible and the signs are more subtle.” The sea presents its own challenge to Catherine. “I’m OK on land. Land is stable but the sea is on the move. Boats are a new experience for me and we’re now learning about navigation and maps – all totally new territory for me. I get seasick and have had to harden up, but it’s beautiful out there. Northland has some of the last pristine coastline in New Zealand.”
“We’ve learn so much content. The tutors have been-there-done-that on different oceans and waterways. They have had their own businesses, are really knowledgeable, and they’re always trying to reach us in different ways. The crammed full content can be over stimulating sometimes like if we’re sailing and need to listen, scream, and learn all at the same time.” “I’m keen to do the Diploma in Environmental Studies in Whangarei when I finish this, and then the degree. Longer term I’d love to work in research and to make a difference.”

“This gave us the confidence to do two voluntary caterings for fund raising events including one with Simon Gault. From the other one, I’ve been offered a future job by the executive chef at Fish restaurant in Auckland! It’s amazing at the events to work with world renowned chefs learning certain techniques.” Kerrie Ann has always had a passion for cooking. “I’ve enjoyed it at a Mum-cooking-everyday level with the kids being my best critics. I knew the hospitality course could further that passion into a career. I commute from west of Dargaville three days a week, so I have to be organized – but it’s worth it.” “I’ve met a lot of cool new friends in the class and the chef is amazing. He encourages us to ask questions even if they’re random - and I ask a lot of questions.” Kerrie Ann will pick up on the Fish restaurant job offer when she finishes the course. “I’m keen to learn as much as I can there. Longer term I’d love to open a restaurant using garden and local produce. My partner is trained in horticulture, so we can grow and cook in this gorgeous fresh-food producing region.

Take Control of Your Future – Today!
W
here do you start? How do you get into a Trade? Many employers prefer to take on employees who have done a pre-trade course, as our graduates have recent, up to date knowledge of their industry and a commitment to the trade. We at G&H Training, cater for students at all levels, from school leavers on our free Youth Course, to experienced construction workers wanting to advance their skills. The Pre-Employment Carpentry course includes all of the theory units needed for a Building Apprenticeship, so no block courses or night classes for you! Our Practical Construction Skills Course is specifically for 16-19 year olds. This programme provides students with the opportunity to gain their NCEA levels 1 & 2 in a hands on learning environment and learn skills that not only interest them, but will also help them in their future.
The greatest thing about G&H Training is that we take enrolments every Monday, so as soon as you’re ready to start, we’re ready to take you on. No waiting around until the next intake!! “I was also looking at the local polytechs as I knew I wanted to get into a trade,” says current student Phillip. “However it was G&H Training’s offer of starting any Monday that decided it for me. As a younger guy I wanted to get stuck in straight away. If I had to wait a few months for the next intake I probably would have lost my motivation. It’s good to know that I’ll be out there earning money that much faster than the competition.”
Sefton Booth studied at G&H Training, successfully completing our Preemployment Carpentry Course. On completion of the course Sefton secured himself an apprenticeship with a local construction company and is currently working on a large residential building project. Being given the opportunity to do work experience as part of the course was great says Sefton. ‘It ignited my passion for building and led to me gaining my apprenticeship.’ When asked to reflect on his time spent with G&H Training, Sefton believes that ‘not only did he achieve the theory credits for his apprenticeship, but he also gained study skills and became a more employable person.’ At such a young age, this is exactly the edge he was looking for. By doing a pre-trade course, he was able to prove to potential employers that he had the drive to see things through and was committed to becoming a builder. Now that Sefton is well on his way to achieving his goal of becoming a qualified, he believes that G&H Training greatly helped him to get where he is today – ‘deciding to study with G&H was one of the best decisions I made as a teenager.’
So if you are interested in a career in the Construction Industry and want to be another success story, call G&H Training today on 0800 876 4664 or check us out at www.ghtraining.co.nz
At G&H Training, we believe it is vital that our students get the opportunity to learn in a variety of ways, such as workshop projects, site visits and one on one tutor discussions.
