The New Waiarohia Footbridge Forms Part of the Loop Walkway W

ork on the new Waiarohia Stream Footbridge is near completion, with all the piles in place. The new bridge will become part of a 4.2km Loop walkway extending from the Town Basin to Te Matau ã Pohe and back again.

The new foot bridge will link the walkway through the heritage and sculpture trail beside the Town Basin across the Waiarohia Stream, and along a riverside path parallel to to Port Road, down to Te Matau ã Pohe. As well as enabling people to cross the river on the walkway, the bridge will draw attention to the Waiarohia, a large stream that is often hidden because it runs underneath so many of the roads in the city.

WAIAROHIA STREAM FOOTBRIDGE T

he simple form of the bridge is a derivative of thoughts based around movement, journey, water and light, food gathering and cultivation with connection to historic and current occupation of the place. All aimed at establishing and reinforcing “a sense of place”.

The bridge is seen as a link. Out of this comes the potential for many implied metaphors, which create the opportunity for all who see and use the bridge to make their own connections and interpretation – as in the interpretation of an artwork. The intent of the design on the most basic of level is to meet the need to cross the stream in a safe way whilst allowing for the occasional passage of boats up and down the stream. The design shown fits within the envelope established within the WDC supplied documents.

The bridge consists of: Nine main bridge piles, which support a sloping column/mast structure, are placed at approx 10.0m centres. The main variation to this occurs at the opening section of the bridge. The mast supports the screen and handrail to the upstream side of the bridge and also the lighting units. Cantilevered beams are attached to the column/ mast as main supports for the bridge deck. (This column/mast structure is reminiscent of the traditional Maori ko or digging stick with the teka, or tread attached. It also references the lightweight structures erected for the catching of Inanga or Whitebait). Northpine Focuses on Innovation and Health and Safety N

orthpine is a timber manufacturing business based in the Northland town of Waipu. Northland grows the stiffest and strongest pine in New Zealand and Northpine transforms these raw logs into high quality structural timber.

Staff and environmental care is an important value at Northpine. Keeping staff safe and minimising the impact on our environment are principles which guide company decision making. This commitment has been recognized by ACC who granted Northpine a tertiary (the highest level) ACC Workplace Safety Management certificate. We received further recognition at the 2013 Westpac Business Excellence awards, where Northpine was a joint winner of the ACC Workplace Safety Award. The company is justifiably proud of these achievements, but also sees it as “good business”. “In primary industries if things go wrong, then both the personal cost and business cost can be horrific” says General Manager Bruce Larsen. “We have an active Health and Safety Committee with Management, Team Leaders and Staff representatives. They work hard to ensure hazards are identified and managed and that staff are well trained”.

The Northpine focus is much deeper than just safety. Regular health checks, education programmes, internal Health & Safety award systems and a focus on “well-being” is central to management thinking. Sponsorship of sports teams and other programmes in our local community also play a part in our health policies. “We have assisted with all sorts of things including funding a radio advertising programme aimed at logging personnel of our supply partners who work in a very high risk environment. We have recently contributed to the launch of “Bounce it Forward” a new programme that is initially aimed at Bream Bay schools and is designed to encourage positive behaviour by relaying a positive message to make a difference to bullying and suicide. While these activities are not directly related to our business, they do strengthen our connection with our community” reports Bruce. “We want the staff and the company to be active contributors, as that is a significant part of doing business in a small town, and we believe that these are positive things that we can do”. Northpine focuses on effective ways to handle timber and the associated heavy lifting to avoid sore limbs and

(from left to right) David Wilson (CEO Northland Inc), Richard Wilson, Keith Reay and Bruce Larsen personal injury. “This is a real challenge” reports Nigel Evans, the Chairman of the Health & Safety Committee. “New staff in particular suffer until they refine their technique and their bodies get used to the work. Unfortunately at this stage Northpine cannot afford to automate some of these tasks, so we just need to steadily work at getting it right”. To be a strong company you need to strengthen all aspects of the business. Health & Safety is a vital component of Northpines growth.

...TO THIS! Northpine’s products are made exclusively from pine grown in Northland because it is stronger, denser and stiffer than pine grown anywhere else in New Zealand. This ensures Northpine’s products always perform exceptionally well in structural applications. Whatever the job, it deserves only the highest quality timber. Ensure your merchant or builder supplies only Northpine products.

Design Your Home with Energy Efficiency in Mind W

hen building your own home it pays to look at energy efficiency before you start building and take into consideration all the many benefits a modern day home can offer both financially, comfort wise and for the environment. There are many ideas to consider when designing your home that will save you money both now and in the long run. Many investments in energy efficiency are a lot cheaper when building from scratch than when you need to correct them in an existing home. A well-designed home usually needs less heating. Insulating the house is one major consideration that all potential home builders should consider. Also the position of the house, facing the living areas north will enable more natural light and heat to enter the house which will in-turn be trapped by the insulation. Including a central mass (i.e. concrete/ stone) in the structure of the house will act as a heat sink trapping heat further whilst utilising renewables (such as the sun or wind) for the home’s hot water and space heating saves money and the environment. Ideas like double glazing windows and making sure the building is properly sealed around all windows and doors traps heat further. Using coating systems, carpets and thermal insulation will also have a reduced environmental impact compared to standard products as well as saving you money. Stepping out of the general accepted way of doing things even further you could incorporate some major building items which are recycled products thus saving money and conserving resources. Installing extract fans will help to minimise the spread of pollutants, odours and moisture from service areas keeping your family free from insidious chemicals.

You could further enhance your environmentally friendliness and cut expenses by sourcing water from supplies which are independent of the town supply like harvesting rainwater, river water or groundbore. Including water efficient devices in the home will also help, such as AAA-rated products and even a grey-water recycling systems.

But for the next six weeks, those happy new owners will be hoards of under fiveyear-olds, as he gives away six hand-built outside craft benches, complete with mini-tools and kids-size tool belts, to six lucky daycare centres in the Whangarei District.

“We support a number of charities and sports teams in Whangarei, and now it was our turn to support the littlies as well – and who knows, we might end up with a few future builders on our hands!” Brett says.

ennian Homes (Northland)

loves seeing a building project finished, with top quality finishes and happy new owners enjoying the end product.

Built by his own team, Brett says the giveaway is something fun to do, to give back to the community. “These benches have been built by our blokes for the kids in our community and we really look forward to giving them away, one a week, for the next six weeks,” he says.

INSPIRE/CREATE/DESIGN JUNE 2014

Basic Painting Tips and Techniques from Guthrie Bowron H

ere are a few handy tips to help you get the best result.

The wall temperature must be above 10 degrees Celsius throughout the painting process. You should generally avoid painting in extremely hot or cold conditions. ✒ Check the guidelines on your cans for re-coating times. It’s important to follow these suggestions, taking into account the temperature, humidity and the type of paint you’re using. One heavier coat is not as good as two – it may not dry properly. Remember to never paint over an area that is partially dried. Leave runs and re-sand once dry. ✒ Thoroughly mixing/stirring your paint is vital.

Work from the top down. ✒ Exterior: Complete the roof, gutters, fascias and eaves, down to walls, doors, windows and baseboards. ✒ Paint weatherboards in two stages for fast easy painting. Paint the underside first, then the face. ✒ Interior: Work from the top down. Start with the ceiling and move down to walls, doors and windows. ✒ Completely finish a wall before stopping and use natural breakpoints like a window frame.

Brushing ✒ Pre-moisten your brush with the right liquid - water for acrylics, turps for oil based paints. ✒ To stop paint running down the brush handle, don’t dip your brush more that 30mm into the paint can. Tap it to remove excess paint. ✒ The bristles should flex only slightly as you brush - don’t over press - let the paint flow from the brush. ✒ If you are painting a large area by brush, apply paint to an area about 50 cm X 50 cm, then brush the paint in horizontal strokes to even the paint out and finish off with light vertical strokes all in one direction. ✒ Never try to paint over an area that is partially dried, as the brush will leave marks in the surface. If you see a run in the wet paint, paint over it as soon as possible with light even strokes. ✒ Store cleaned paint brushes by wrapping them in newspaper and storing them out of direct sunlight.

Rolling ✒ Choose a roller sleeve for the paint effect you require. Generally speaking, 6-8mm nap covers are used for gloss and semi gloss paints, 10-12mm nap covers for low sheen and flat paints on walls and

so that the paste doesn’t dry out. Allow some overlap – paste a bit more of the wall than just the width of each cut piece.

20-32mm nap covers for most paints on rough surfaces like concrete or textured walls. ✒ Use zigzag strokes - rolling upwards on the first stroke, then even out with parallel strokes. Wrap the roller in cling wrap if you take a break. ✒ To avoid paint splatter, don’t overload the roller with paint. Eliminate the ‘orange peel’ effect with rollers by using a short mohair 8mm pile over. Store roller covers upright, so you don’t flatten the pile. ✒ If you are using a brush and roller, paint the edges of the area first.

Wall Papers Paste the Wall wallpapers (‘So Ezy’) If you’ve never done any wallpapering before, you couldn’t find a better paper to learn on than this. ✒ Paste-the-wall products have a specially developed backing which does not expand, allowing it to be hung dry, without having to soak it in water, straight from the roll. You just ‘paint’ the adhesive/paste (metylan special or metylan direct control) onto your properly prepared wall, not on to the paper.

✒ Slide the paper into place and check the match. No need to rush. Smooth it across using a brush. ✒ Then trim off to fit at the ceiling/top and skirting/bottom edge.

Super 10 carpets ✒ It can be confusing choosing the right carpet for your home. Whether you’re adding carpet to an existing look or building a new look from scratch, getting the shade and texture that will work best with your curtains, walls and furnishings can be quite daunting. Along with having experts in-store to help you with this common dilemma, Guthrie Bowron has created the Super 10 selection. This hand-picked base range of 10 great quality carpets start from just $109 per linear metre ($29.80 per m²), and have been chosen for their individual benefits and qualities.

✒ Don’t paste the entire wall before starting to hang your wallpaper. Simply paste one section of the wall at a time

The Dulux 2014 Colour Trends G

athered from emerging trends from around the world, the Dulux 2014 Colour Forecast, entitled Future Tribes, draws together unexpected colour combinations into 4 palettes.

The Precious Elementals Softly schemed, the hues of The Precious Elementals are inspired by the earth’s natural elements and their geometric forms. With subdued shades and blue-grey undertones, the scheme features the light stone of Dulux Opononi Double, the wet rock-grey of Dulux Mt Eden, and the deep charcoal of Dulux Rawene, matched

The Romantic Spirits

with the moody sky of Dulux Waioeka, the cloudy white of Dulux Lyttelton, and the metallic roughness of Dulux Exposed Granite Metallic.

Seductive, sultry and rich in colour, The Romantic Spirits inspires a sense of romantic nostalgia. Drawing from the Dutch masters’ palettes, the style uses simple embellishments and flourishes resembling calligraphy strokes, with timber forms.

Styled again by McCarroll, Leech and Nette King, mineral and metal colours modernise pastels and soft greys, while patinas and raw finishes reflect the weathering effects of nature. The palette has a more cocooning, winter retreat feel. It’s a very Kiwi palette - the blue-greens teamed with the beautiful muted pastels, and the metallics add a sense of richness and mystery to the palette.

All gold and mahogany, the palette features the plush pink of Dulux

Ohaeawai, the sumptuous maroon of Dulux Lake Hayes, the crystal blue of Dulux Benmore Half, metallic glints in Dulux Gaby’s Gold Metallic, set against deep royal blue of Dulux Tuatapere. Styled by Melbourne artist, Geoffrey Carran, Leech and Nette King, The Romantic Spirits capture history with patina finishes and worn looks which are contrasted against moody colours. “I wanted to create a space that echoes that same warm, enveloping sense that being caught up in a romance elicits. Drawing inspiration from the deep colours contrasted against lighter pastels and metallics, the Dutch Masters Still Life’s and Momento Mori were reinterpreted,” said Carran. Visit Dulux.co.nz to see the other two palettes – Digital Nomads and Retro Visionaries; for the 2014 Forecast.

a-Z-Boy Gallery is opening inside Fabers Furnishings - the ultimate destination for choosing furniture from the internationally acclaimed La-Z-Boy range. Northland residents are offered the biggest possible range of La-Z-Boy furniture which now includes living, dining and occasional furniture.

Apart from offering the biggest possible selection of designs and coverings, Fabers’ fully trained sales people who possess a high level of product knowledge and technical know-how, will help you choose the right furniture that matches your home décor and budget. Benefits of La-Z-Boy: There are many health benefits gained from reclining in your La-Z-Boy. Just to name a few, one simple yet very important benefit is taking the weight off your spine, when sitting up straight you are still contracting the muscles in your back, whilst reclining in a La-Z-Boy your spine is resting.

reclining. Not only are you supporting your back, but this also helps with other medical conditions, for instance varicose veins. The blood flow goes back to your heart. 68% of doctors recommend recliners for muscle strain and also pregnancy related back pain so that the back is reclined and legs are elevated. Elevating your legs also helps with inflammation. Thirdly another benefit gained whilst in a La-Z-Boy is from the semi-reclined position as this helps those who experience difficulty in breathing. For example, a semi-reclined position can decrease the severity of sleep apnea and also helps with snoring.

Freshen Up Your Bathroom

Be inspired by nature when choosing fittings, writes Susan Edmunds

B

athrooms are the little luxury that you enjoy every day. Whether it’s a heated towel rail to make getting out of the shower in the morning a bit easier or an extra-deep bath to submerge in after work, small improvements to your bathroom can have a surprisingly big effect on your life. Unlike living rooms and bedrooms, where most people are comfortable adding throws or ornaments to adapt the decor to their own style, too often we revert to the tried and true when it comes to bathrooms. There’s no reason to—taking on some of the season’s trends can really change the look of your bathroom and make it that much enjoyable to relax in.

One of the biggest design shifts has been to bathrooms that take their inspiration from nature. Instead of white, they are decorated in very pale beiges and browns and instead of ceramic fittings, they use Showers are also becoming much bigger. Homeowners with small bathrooms are often opting for a big shower at the expense of a bath.

LA-Z-BOY GALLERY NOW OPEN INSIDE FABERS FURNISHINGS

Fabers Furnishings is opening a new LA-Z-BOY Gallery which will offer Northland residents the biggest possible range of LA-Z-BOY furniture which now includes living, dining and occasional furniture.

The step away from traditional vanities often comes with a loss of storage, so vertical cupboards and shelving units are becoming really popular. You can pick these up cheaply and they can look great— stacked with brightly coloured towels, for instance. This allows you to add and remove storage space as you need it. If you are painting your bathroom walls, it is important to choose paints that are specifically designed for wet areas. Acrylic paints are easier to handle than enamels but enamels are a lot more durable, especially in areas where there is a lot of moisture. If you are unsure, ask an expert for help. A fabulous way to add colour in a subtle way is to opt for something a bit different on the ceiling. You might have very pale colours on the walls and then a slightly darker shade on the ceiling, giving a kind of halo to the room.

If you’re contemplating this, call in the experts—correct drainage and waterproofing is essential.

Your bathroom accessories are your chance to play around with different looks. At the moment, grey driftwood tones are extremely popular for towels and bathmats. Otherwise, greens and browns complement the naturein-yourbathroom idea. Grab a pile of driftwood and pop it in a vase in the corner.

Decorators are opting for square taps and fittings, rather than round ones, and basins are now usually the kind that sits on top of the vanity, rather than being recessed. This fits in with the natural theme—it’s almost as if

You can really go all out and add in things such as flat screen TVs for true luxury and indulgence in your bathroom. Some designers even report people sneaking in televisions that look like mirrors, until you turn them on.

Some are taking this even further, turning the entire bathroom into a wet room, with no partition at all for the shower.

Another benefit is elevating your legs whilst

you’ve rested a bowl of water on the vanity. Rather than pure chrome, look at bronze for your fittings.

TAKE YOUR DESIGN CUES FROM THE GREAT OUTDOORS Natural stone or even concrete. Even wooden floors are taking over from tiles and there is a growing trend to use recycled materials. If you are using tiles of any kind, the trend is for them to be much bigger than in previous years, and often in the same style on the walls and

floors, giving a cocoon-like effect. Opt for gloss tiles on the walls and matte on the floors. Frameless glass screens are really popular—anything that makes the elements of the bathroom appear to flow together, rather than sit apart.

Smarter ways to heat your home… At HRV, we believe our invironments can be a whole lot better than that – and we’ve made it possible with a range of smart products, developed with worldleading technology and put to the test in the toughest New Zealand invironments. We have the answer to making your invironment the purest, most comfortable space it can be. Heating, cooling, water filtration and ventilation – this is a healthy home, and this is what we do. W

ith many New Zealand homes sitting 2-4°C below World Health Organisation standards, heating is a big factor in creating a healthy invironment.

9645887AA

At HRV part of our mission is to create that warm, dry and healthy invironment

throughout your whole home. Improving heating efficiency makes it easier to heat more than just the one living space, as many kiwi families do. A warmer home throughout, is a healthier home. Spaces like bedrooms are often forgotten, but they’re where you spend

about 1/3 of your day, and leaving them cold and often damp can trigger a variety of health problems. Small changes can make a big difference – things like drying out the air in your home, so it’s easier to heat. You spend a lot more energy trying to heat wet air as you do dry. Using the existing warmth in

your home – heat from roof spaces, or excess heat in one room which can be spread around the house. Or making the choice to use regular background heat to take the chill off efficiently, rather than cranking up a radiant heater for instant heat. All these things can make your invironment a much more comfortable and healthy place to live.

Pairing Opposites with Your Interior Design By Mary Carol Garrity

P

airing opposites may or may not be the recipe for a good marriage, but it’s definitely an exciting approach when it comes to interior design.

Here are five secrets for working the magic of high-contrast decorating into home design.

1. Pair light and dark colours One of the most effective ways to play with opposites in decor is to pair dark and light colours. Some of my favorite dynamic duos? Black and white. Navy and cream. I love to pull these and other high-contrast colours together when designing because of their wow factor. My dining room features navy walls. If the entire room happened to be this deep, dark colour, it would be a little too brooding for my taste. So I painted the trim and the paneling, which covers the lower portion of the walls, in cream. The cream keeps the space from taking itself too seriously by brightening the overall appearance of the room. Black and white, a perennial favorite of mine, is gaining strength with interior designers again. We’re seeing it popping back up at market and in the work of new designers. It’s never gone out of vogue in my heart because it’s such a timeless classic. You can also use high-contrast colour combinations in furnishings. Just place a light-colored piece of furniture next to one that is dark. Bingo! Accent your light or dark sofa with a mix of contrasting pillows. If you have dark hardwood floors, zip them up with light area rugs.

2. Mix refined and rough objects Another of my favorite techniques for high-contrast decorating is to create tableaux that include both refined and rough elements. We wanted to make an elegant silver tea service even more arresting, so we brought in some visual contrast by including a gritty garden statue in the display. The pairing of these two unlikely partners makes them each all the more beautiful. Look around your home and see what type of refined and rough pieces you have, and then mix them together in a display. Maybe it’s a china soup tureen or English footbath filled with earthy moss

balls. Or a primitive wooden dough bowl cradling crystal candlesticks.

5. Put inexpensive and expensive together

A natural place to blend refined and rough is in outdoor rooms. A weatherworn cement table stands in my courtyard year-round. It seems ironic to cover this rugged piece of furniture with a gorgeous custom tablecloth, doesn’t it? A delicate urn on the table doesn’t belong out in the yard - or does it? It does at my house. When I entertain outdoors, you’ll find my best pieces on the al fresco dining table, from heirloom china to crystal water goblets.

Sometimes there is no replacement for using well-made, high-quality pieces in your decor. I feel that way about upholstered furniture. You definitely get what you pay for. But when I can, I love to cheat, opting for pieces that look super-expensive but are a bargain. If you wander through my home, you’ll see pieces of great value

mixed together with those that are inexpensive. Often, they are hardly distinguishable from one another. I embraced this marriage of inexpensive and expensive in my 20s, when I was too broke to purchase more than a few nice things for my apartment. I would save my pennies and buy one or two investment pieces, then fill in with low-cost pretenders. Another example is the place setting, where I grounded the display of china on inexpensive placemats.

3. Blend the elegant and everyday When designing rooms, I intertwine pieces that are elegant with those that are everyday. One friend’s home is a great example. We dressed her formal sofa in sophisticated silk pillows. Then we contrasted this fussy fabric with no-nonsense window coverings: garden-variety bamboo roller shades. I’m bringing the same concept to life in my home right now. I’ve covered some upholstered furniture in ticking, one of my favorite fabrics because it’s so simple and unassuming. Then I helped it go a bit uptown by tossing on some accent pillows in a formal damask. Some of my other elegant and everyday fabric combos? Buffalo check or burlap threaded together with luxurious velvets, plaids and paisleys.

4. Wed the manufactured with the organic My style is ever evolving, and I’m increasingly in love with the clean and simple contemporary accents that are so hot today, like colorful pottery. But an unshakable bedrock of my style is using organic elements in everyday decor. To create a high-impact, high-contrast look, I use them both, together, in my decor. I often display items that are made out of natural materials with those that are not. For example, I may place a lovely drinks service on a wicker tray. Or fill a china bowl with stones or nuts.
