WAIPU IN TARTAN ‘Art N Tartan’ Awards

T

he concept for the very popular ‘Art N Tartan’ Wearable Arts awards came when Jo McAuley was thinking of some lynch-pin event around which Tartan Week could revolve. Rosemary Neave of the Bream Bay website had come up with the idea of Tartan Week to commemorate the 1782 repeal of the notorious Act of Proscription that for 40 years after the Battle of Culloden prevented Highland men and boys from the wearing of Tartan. The week lacked some glue to hold it all together.

of both the Scottish immigrants and of the local Maori in her mesmerising song, dance and light drama which surrounds the costumes. The power of the Waipu migration story is retold each year in the interpretation of each of the contestant’s entries.

From the start back in 2010 it proved to be a winning formula. So much so that the conveners are now eagerly looking to next year when the new Barn Building will be completed and able to house many more ticket holders. Sponsors have got behind this year’s event in unprecedented numbers thus ensuring its on-going viability. ‘Art N Tartan’ is an annual event though last year saw a break with the epic Pageant held in January taking a lot of the community’s resources.

This year’s awards at the end of June will show-case 30 entries along with over 14 masks making it a comprehensive and exciting evening. Judges look for creativity and originality, quality of craftsmanship and of course impact on stage among other things. The show is not seen as a fashion show but rather is a multi media performance where the human body becomes a living, moving, breathing canvas. It is a challenge to our concepts of what is wearable. There are several different categories each with a prize including McKiwi, Fireside Stories from the Land of Myths, Brave-Heart and the new Engine Room to encourage blokes and blokettes to construct some ingenuous work of art.

Having the criteria that each entry must include at least thirty percent tartan has given Waipu’s iconic ceremony a point of difference from other such events around the country. Director Helen Frances is always keen to meld the cultures

It never ceases to amaze the convenors and the watching public just how enterprising and creative the entries are. And next year more people will get to see the event which reinforces Waipu’s heritage.

Repeal of the Act Prescribing the wearing of Highland Dress

T

he dress act was part of the Act of Proscription which came into force on the 1st August 1746 and made wearing ‘the highland dress’ including tartan or a kilt illegal in Scotland as well as reiterating the Disarming Act. The Jacobite Risings between 1689 and 1746 found their most effective support amongst the Scottish clans and this Act was part of a series of measures that attempted to bring the warrior clans under government control. An exemption allowed the kilt to be worn in the army, continuing the tradition established by the Black Watch regiment.

On July 1st 1782 royal assent was given to a Repeal of the Act Prescribing the Wearing of Highland dress “Listen men. This is bringing before all the sons of the Gael, the King and parliament of Britain have forever abolished the act against the Highland Dress; which came down to the Clans from the beginning of the world to the year 1746. This must bring great joy to every Highland heart. You are no longer bound down to the unmanly dress of the Lowlander. This is declaring to every Man, young and old, simple and gentle, that they may after this put on and wear the Truis, the Little kilt, the Coat, and the Striped Hose, as also the Belted Plaid, without fear of the law of the Realm or the spite of the enemies.”

nspired by Waipu’s very own driftwood sculpture artist, Greg Maddox, The Tartan Taniwha competition gives people of all ages the opportunity to let their creative flair run riot.

Now in its second year, the competition is being held at the Waipu Surf Life Saving Club at Waipu Cove. Contestants are invited to create a tartan themed Taniwha made from anything you can find at home or in the great outdoors – on the farm, in the bushes or along our great shores. It’s a fantastic opportunity to use up cardboard boxes, plastic bottles, scrap metals and items from the bottom drawer – stuff you’ve kept because you know it just may be useful one day! Last year there were some amazing entries that were awash with glitter, palm and nikau

leaves, shells, recycled bottles and colourful beads. There were some enchanting characters made – a Loch Ness Monster, a highland mythical creature and a dune banshee. There were also a few sand sculptures made on the day with driftwood and items found on the beach. You can make your creation before the competition and bring it down for judging by 11 o’clock or make one up on the day at the Surf Club so it’s ready for judging by 12 noon. There are three categories and awards. Prizes will be given for the best group or family creation, best adult and best child. Don’t forget to give your give your creation a tartan twist. There was a great array of products and modalities on show – Herbalists, homeopaths, an iridologist, acupuncturist, and flower essences. Kate Rankin, a natural birth midwife had just moved to the village and found the show an awesome way to connect with like-minded people and meet local mums. Waipu is renowned for the variety of ways to stay fit; and the show provided the opportunity to meet with teachers of yoga, Nordic walking, Pilates, Energy Dance and Spin classes. This year, the Wellbeing Show is branching out to include ways to create a healthy lifestyle as hobbies and pastimes play a huge part in people’s lives. Waipu has a lot to offer a wide range of groups from Bridge to Croquet, Bowls, Gardening, Geneology and workshops for budding artists.
