Principal Edith Painting-Davis continues in the role of Principal for her second year and has been overwhelmed by the support and conďŹ dence of the community and staff in leading positive change at Bay of Islands College. Many of the successes can been seen through the refurbishment of the school marae and surrounding property, including a bright new sign out the front of our school. Our NCEA results for 2019 improved across the board and many initiatives have contributed to this increase in NCEA pass rates. Bay of Islands College is performing above the national average statistics for NCEA Levels 1 to 3 but there is still room for improvement. Bay of Islands College is the only secondary school in the mid north who are members of the Manaiakalani programme where staff and students are supported in their learning through a digital platform. Feedback from NZQA suggest that our school is well prepared and positioned for the increased introduction and inclusion of digital exams as an option for seniors’ external exams at the end of their senior years. Bay of Islands College continues to be a vibrant, safe and energetic environment that caters to the diverse needs of all our students.

Leaders in Our School Rebecca Hamer – Head Girl Kia Ora Tatou. I have been at Kamo High School since Year 9. Some things I enjoy doing are playing sports, singing, travelling and spending time with my friends and family. Last year I went on a six month exchange to France and became immersed in their culture and language. I now have a French family and many friends around the world. I speak French fluently and am trying my best not to lose the language. My favourite subjects at school this year are Health and Biology. I hope to go to AUT next year to study nursing/midwifery. As a head prefect this year I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone at school, getting involved in as many things as possible, taking on all responsibilities and leading Tapere to victory!
Let’s have a good 2020.
Raivyn-Skye Tangariki-Pou – Head Girl Kia Ora. I enjoy creating new things in the kitchen and also eating them. My favourite subjects at school are Hospitality and Biology. I am looking forward to helping other students follow their dreams and achieving their goals. Next year I will be either studying at QRC, a Culinary School in Paihia, or competing for an apprenticeship at Sky City trying to further my skills in the Hospitality industry.
Nathan Parkes – Head Boy Nathan Parkes – Head Boy This is my 5th year at Kamo High School and I’m a proud member of the Moana whanau. I love sport and play for Kamo High in cricket, hockey and football, however cricket is my main passion. This term I have played for Northland Mens’ A Cricket team. My favourite subject at school is PE and I’m planning on going to university next year – I just need to decide what to study. As a Head Prefect I’m looking forward to getting involved in as much as I can, and challenging myself with new experiences to make the most of my last year here at Kamo High School.
Kobe Walters – Head Boy Kobe Walters – Head Boy Kia ora. I have been at Kamo High School the full 5 years of my high school life, and have watched and admired the Head Prefects all the way through. To get an opportunity to be a head prefect is an absolute honour. My hobbies include playing sports and one day I hope to make a career out of it. I play cricket, rugby and hockey, and have had a few games of soccer. I represent all my sports for the top team at KHS and was lucky enough to be picked for the Auckland Blues U17s squad. The subjects I have taken this year are PE, biology, English, Maori and Maths. I enjoy Biology and Te Reo Maori and have developed a very close relationship with all my teachers. What I am looking forward to doing as Head Prefect this year is to create deeper relationships with my fellow students around school and to lead the school in the best way I can. My goals for the future are to hopefully get selected for the Auckland Rugby Academy and if not, go to university and study physiotherapy or sports and recreation.
Ethan Hare Head Boy 2020
Kia Ora My name is Ethan Hare and I am both humbled and honoured to be the Head Boy at Whangarei Boys’ High school for 2020. The opportunity of being a leader in our prestigious school is something I look forward to in my final year. The passions that I have are heavily sport based, the main ones being Cricket, Squash, and Clay Target Shooting. As well as these I am a devoted hunter gatherer, being both a passionate deer stalker and duck shooter. My goals for the year are to achieve highly in NCEA Level Three, paving a path for my future in which I look to pursue a career in medicine. I have chosen the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Statistics, and Physical Education to help me accomplish my aspirations. I, along with my strong team of Head Prefects are excited for the year ahead, which will be filled with triumphs and challenges. The opportunities our roles give us are endless, and I am sure we will make the most of them. I look forward to leaving my mark on our prestigious school.
Every good piece of music has three major components. The start that must be engaging and draw you in, the middle which is the core of the tune and an end which leaves you wanting more or looking for something else. This is inherent in any genre of music. For me in my tenure at Whangarei Boys’ High School I feel that I have been a note in the melody that is this fine institution. As a Year 9 every boy was encouraged to engage in an aspect of Whangarei Boys’ High. I chose music. During my five years here I have developed as a musician and an academic; now that I am at the end of my time I am looking towards further education. For this I thank the melody that is WBHS, and the people who listened along the way. Whether you play music or sport, whether you dance or act, whether you study or play, you are a note that is worthy of listening to at this school. The Old Boys helped me write my melody, as the leaders of 2020 will help write the melody of boys to come. I am thankful to the Boys’ High melody and everything it has brought out in me. Angus Trail “It’s a long way to the top if you want to rock Bledisloe Whanau Captain and roll.”
Benjamin Foon Deputy Head Boy
Kia Ora, My name is Caleb Squires and I have the honour of being one of the Bledisloe Whanau captains for 2020. It was always one of my goals to become a Prefect, to be one of the boys in white. Now that it is a reality I want to be sure that I take this opportunity as a gift and use it as a platform to better myself and the school life of my peers. I hope to use this position to support my school and members of the Whangarei Boys’ High School brotherhood however I can and to keep the tradition and culture of the school alive. Whangarei Boys’ High School has helped me grow into the person I am today. The lessons and experiences I’ve had here so far will stay with me for the rest of my life and I am very grateful that I am able to be part of that for younger students. This leadership opportunity has already taught me so much in the short time that I have been back at school in 2020 and I very much look Caleb Squires forward to the challenges and new experiences Bledisloe Whanau Captain it has to offer.
Kia Ora
Kia Ora
Honoured to be selected as Prefect and Hobson Whanau Captain at Whangarei Boys’ High School for 2020, I am Max Robertson.
My name is Tawhitirahi Witana, and I am honoured to be one of the Hobson Whanau Captains at Whangarei Boys’ High School for 2020.
When showing up for my first day of high school, the Year 13 prefects were a great comfort and help to me. Since that first week back in 2016, I have aspired to be a Prefect, to help create that same feeling of security, and assist others in their pursuits at Whangarei Boys’ High.
My goal for Hobson this year is for members to fully participate in a variety of house activities and competitions. By encouraging boys to work together and challenge themselves, I hope Hobson members will have fun and for the first time in 25 years win the inter house competition in 2020.
Brandon Peck Deputy Head Boy
Kia Ora My name is Brandon Peck and I feel privileged to have gained the role as one of the Deputy Head Boys at Whangarei Boys’ High School for 2020. This opportunity to be a leader and a voice for the students is something I look forward to undertaking throughout my final year of high school. My passions include playing a range of sports, heavily dominated by Hockey and Cricket. I hope to continue to encourage student participation in the various sporting opportunities Whangarei Boys’ High School has to offer. Furthermore, I am also a keen lifeguard, participating in different Surf Life Saving activities around the northern region. My goals for this year are to perform well academically in NCEA Level three, gaining a high endorsement which will lay a good platform for me to pursue further studies in potentially business and law. I am looking forward to the challenges that this year will bring, the chance to be a leader within the school and the opportunity to contribute my part to Whangarei Boys’ High School’s iconic heritage.
Jack Slatter Deputy Head Boy
My name is Brad Halton and I am privileged to be called one of the Carruth Whanau Captains for 2020.
I look forward to taking on the responsibilities of this role and being in a position where I can set a great example for the younger students coming through the school.
After being at Whangarei Boys’ High School for the past five years I feel like this is the ultimate way to give back to my school community. I still remember my first day sitting in the hall looking up at all the Prefects and thinking what a dream that could be.
Zak Wickman Carruth Whanau Captain
School life goes very fast, so make the most out of it in the short time you have.
I look forward to what this year has to offer and the challenges to overcome in these final four terms I have here.
Tawhitirahi Witana Hobson Whanau Captain
Aidan Scrooby Marsden Whanau Captain
Riley-Jack Vette-Blomquist Deputy Head Boy
Brock Longworth Grey Whanau Captain
I plan on studying Engineering at the University of Auckland however I aim to keep my university options open and perform highly in all my subjects for NCEA level 3. I am grateful for the experiences I’ve had so far at Whangarei Boys’ High School. I will continue to explore my hobbies and interests, learning from both the teachers here and through my fellow students.
Heath Grant Deputy Head Boy My name is Brock Longworth and it is my utmost privilege to not only be a Year 13 Prefect but also be selected as a Grey Whanau captain in 2020. My journey through Whangarei Boys’ High School has taken me from a naive young Year 9 student, to a proud Year 13 leader. It had always been my ambition to be one of the boys who sat on the stage during assemblies, proudly wearing their smart white shirts and various titles. Now, I am that leader I yearned to be, and I am ready to serve the school to help others reach their goals and achieve their dreams. Whangarei Boys’ High School has provided me with so much that I am grateful for. Not only a strong academic foundation to build a strong career off but also a set of skills which guide me to being a better person overall. I am so grateful for this and in turn hope (this year) to work alongside a very strong team of student leaders in giving back to a school that we’ve all gained so much from. I’m sure 2020 will be a great year and I will do my best to embrace every minute of my final chapter at Whangarei Boys’ High School. Kia Ora, My name is Levi Popata, I am the Head Boarder of Carruth House for 2020. I’m very excited for the year ahead of me, especially the opportunities that it will present. It is a privilege to represent the hostel this year and work with the new Director of Boarding, Michael Gilmour, as well as the Hostel Prefect team to help ensure the boarders of 2020 make the most from their stay here in the hostel both socially and academically. I also want to work closely with the boarders around actively upholding our most important school value - whakawhanaungatanga and manaakitanga which is respectful relationships - on a daily basis. Beyond this, my goals within school include endorsing NCEA Level Three with excellence and getting at least 50 community service hours throughout the year.
My name is Dylan Hook and I am one of the Marsden Whanau Captains for 2020. My passion is playing rugby, and I have played in the 1st XV for the past 2 years and am looking to play again this year. I have attended Whangarei Boys’ High School since Year 9 and have loved every single minute of it. Marsden came out on top in 2019 and we are looking to go back to back with another win in 2020. I am looking forward to all the opportunities that will arise this year.
Dylan Hook Marsden Whanau Captain
I look forward to taking on the responsibilities of this role. I hope I can pass on some of the things I’ve learned while I’ve been at Whangarei Boys’ High School. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been passionate about learning how things work. I enjoy solving problems and working with Technology.
This year will be full of academic and sporting endeavours that will challenge us, but we are all willing to accept the challenge and to leave the school even better than when we started.
I am passionate about sports, Kapa Haka and Music. I am uncertain as to what the future has in store for me, but at the same time extremely excited and I will learn and experience as much as I can in my last remaining year as well as having fun along the way in my home stretch at Whangarei Boys’ High School.
My name is Heath Grant, and I’m proud to be a Deputy Head Boy for 2020 at Whangarei Boys’ High School.
Starting back in 2016, sitting on the wooden seats in the hall on my first day, looking up at the Prefects, it was always a dream to one day be leading like them. Their compassion and willingness to help were always qualities I admire in leaders. So to now have the opportunity to support the school that has helped me grow into the person I am today is quite humbling. 2020 is going to be a year that no one will forget.
I hope to share the best year of school with a strong group of our senior leaders as well as the rest of our school and staff. If I could give one piece of advice I got told in Year 9 that would be “take every opportunity you are given and get involved as much as you can, you’re only here for 5 years, so make the most of your time at this school”
Brad Halton Carruth Whanau Captain
Kia Ora,
There are times in your life where you are presented with great opportunities to grow and develop as a person. This is one of those opportunities. It is an incredible honour and privilege to be one of Whangarei Boys’ High School Deputy Head Boys for 2020.
After pushing myself to where I am today and being proud of every opportunity Whangarei Boys’ High School has given me, that dream turned into a reality.
Kia Ora My name is Aidan Scrooby, I am one of the Marsden Whanau Captains at Whangarei Boys’ High School for 2020. I am a passionate sportsman and have been all of my life. I currently play Rugby and train in Mixed Martial Arts. This year at school I am studying Physical Education, Statistics, Biology, English and Art Design. I hope to study Physiotherapy at university after school. I am looking forward to the year ahead of me and the opportunities I will be presented with.
Next year I want to attend University or join the forces.
Kia Ora, My name is Jack Slatter and I am a Deputy Head Boy at Whangarei Boys’ High School for the year 2020. I am enjoying being part of a great team of people who are all aiming to do well individually, but also to try to help others achieve their goals. We have a great opportunity to learn about and experience leadership as a group, but also from and with the school’s leaders and administrators. People who have been in these roles in the past leave some big shoes to fill, but they always talk about how much they enjoyed the challenge, and I’m sure we too, will have a year we will never forget. Whangarei Boys’ High School is all about “developing boys into fine young men”. This means preparing us for life beyond school. To do this requires us to do well in whatever we choose, whether that be cultural, academic, sporting, the arts or being good citizens - or as many of my peers are aiming at, all of the above. We would like to pass this ideal on to the younger generations currently passing through the school and help them strive to always better themselves. Looking forward to the year ahead.
My name is Zak Wickman and in 2020 I am privileged enough to be one of the Carruth House captains in 2020.
My passion is rugby and this will be my second year in the 1st XV here at Whangarei Boys’ High School. This is only my second year here at Whangarei Boys and I was lured here by the greater sporting opportunities. It is a decision that I have not once regretted and I am glad that I can now represent the school as a leader
I am a proud descendant of Te Aupouri, and I love representing my family and Iwi in such a respected way. I come from a small place in the Far North called Te Kao.
Sport is a big part of my life and something I am passionate about. I have played football since I was five and have been a Northland Rep player for the past 10 years. I play Football and Basketball for WBHS.
Max Robertson Hobson Whanau Captain
Kia Ora My name is Benjamin Foon and I am one of five Deputy Head boys at Whangarei Boys’ High School for 2020. To hold this position in a school steeped in history and tradition is both an honour and something I look forward to as I enter my final year at high school. I am proud to be of both Chinese and Pakeha heritage and am passionate about sports, particularly Basketball and Football. Last year I was involved in the triumphant 1st XI and am hoping to play again this year. My main goal for 2020 is to achieve highly in NCEA, setting up a solid foundation for a career in corporate law or business and I have chosen Business Studies, Accounting, Economics, English and Statistics this year to accomplish this. In my final year at high school, I have been presented with a chance to give back to not only the school, but the community and I am looking forward to repaying the former for all it has done for me. I look forward to all of the opportunities that this year will present and also all of the challenges that I know as a strong head prefect team we can conquer together.
Levi Popata Carruth Head Boarder
Rueben Jones Grey Whanau Captain
When I got selected as Grey Whanau Captain 2020, it was unreal. To have that honour and responsibility thrust on my shoulders was a dream come true. My inspiration this year as a Whanau Captain, comes from Daniel McInnes, Grey’s Whanau Captain in 2016. Daniel lead Grey with pride and a prestigious attitude and I look to do the same. This year I have decided to take English, Calculus, PED, Physics and Chemistry as school subjects. In doing so I hope to gain a profession in either Physiotherapy, Chemical Engineering or a degree in Physics. This year outside of school learning I have chosen to lead the Wellbeing Committee, which revolves around keeping the wellbeing of Whangarei Boys’ High students and teachers at a respectable level. Through this Committee I have also been given the chance to mentor a young Year 9 student and to be his “big brother” so to speak. I play football every day of the week and coach a Northland U11 team. I hope this year I can achieve a high level of academic excellence and to lead Grey to a well-deserved victory. Go the Greyhounds!! Kia Ora! I feel honoured to be elected as the Student Representative on Whangarei Boys’ High School Board of Trustees for 2020. I am excited to take over where Flynn Symonds left off in 2019, and ready to continue helping the school move further in a positive direction. With the new school build starting very soon, it is a busy and exciting time to be on the Board. I am grateful for being given this opportunity and I am eager to overcome any challenges I may face in this role. Unlike my fellow Senior Leaders, I’m a Year 12 student this year! I am privileged to experience being on the Senior Leaders’ Team a year early, before my final year of high school in 2021. I am ambitious to grow as not only a leader, but as a person this year.
Ben Woodgates BoT Student Representative
INTRODUCING MICHAEL GILMOUR THE NEW DIRECTOR OF BOARDING CARRUTH HOUSE Te-na- koutou I am extremely proud and excited to be the new Director of Boarding at Carruth House. I am excited to work in an environment where our students feel safe, happy and are supported in every way to be themselves, and encouraged to make the most of the wonderful opportunities available to them here at Carruth House and Whangarei Boys’ High School. I want to continue to build on the positive reputation of boarding at Carruth House so we maintain and grow our position as a leading choice for boys’ boarding in Northland. I believe great parents set the culture and tone of their family and foster a sense of belonging, protection, and direction. We set the same intentions in our boarding family at Carruth. I am fortunate to lead a team who deliver an incredibly high duty of care. Everything we do revolves around supporting the students’ number one objective for being here - to get an excellent education.
Please feel free to contact me for more information or a tour of Carruth House.
I also highly value building relationships with the boarders, and I will be in involved as much as possible getting to know everyone. This will give me a good understanding of what happens on a day-to-day basis in the boarding house. I have moved back to New Zealand after spending two years in Western Australia, where I was the College Manager at Broome Residential College. 2020 will be an exciting year for Carruth House, with some new changes and plenty of work ahead for myself and the team. We will continue to develop, build and embed a culture of wellbeing throughout Carruth House.
