STOP DIGGING!

ground screw to replace concrete foundations is a new product to be demonstrated at the Northland Field Days this year. Stop Digging owner Shem Robinson has brought the innovative system to Northland, although it is well established in Europe and Australia. He says the ground screws save money and can be used for anything from a fence to a two-storey house foundations. “The best thing about them is there is no mess, and they are made of galvanized steel which will last for much longer than timber or concrete piles,’’ he says. The ground screws have been used by the Department of Conservation on walkways as they have been proven to last for more than 100 years, while timber piles cannot handle acidic soils found in kauri forests and have only been lasting about 15 years. Councils accept that they can be classed as temporary foundations as the ground screws can be removed, which can be useful for cabin foundations, Shem says. He says the ground screws can be installed anywhere where concrete would often be used to support an upright post or prefabricated concrete support. With more than 10 different models, the ground screw can be used for park benches, fences, decks, carports and noise barriers. “They are really easy to adjust and there is no waiting around for concrete to cure,’’ he says.

Water restrictions at Field Days

3

30 years of Northland Fieldays for our Jan

Exhibitors for the Northland Field Days have been notified about the drought affecting the district.

M

ajor water restrictions have forced the limitation of access to water supplies for exhibitors. The Northland Field Days committee has organised for enough water supply for essential use such as for the food courts and toilet facilities.

Some exhibitors must have water in order to be able to demonstrate some of their products and keep animals well cared for - these exhibitors have been invited to make arrangements with the organisers. Some members of the local community have offered to support the event by trucking in water that

is not from town water supply. Dust can be a hazard so some water will be used to dampen down the roads inside the event site as well as the tractor pull area when required. The committee hopes the crowd enjoys the event, and it might pay to bring a water bottle.

Northpower is thrilled to celebrate Jan’s 30th year at the Dargaville Field Days. To acknowledge this milestone we have collated a selection of the wonderful treats and eats Jan, our very loved Customer Advisor has prepared for us all over these 30 years. Come and see us at Field Days and get your free copy of the recipe book.

They’re big beasts and have big pulling power at the Northand Field Days.

T

he Tractor Pull competition is always a popular spectacle and allows for a bit of friendly rivalry among novices and experienced operators. With a prize pool of more than $3000, there will be some keenly fought contests. On Thursday 5 March, there is the business house trophy up for grabs on Business Challenge day. Competitors are put in a tractor with a teacher to learn the ropes of tractor racing. Once they have got the hang of things, the competitors are swapped into another tractor for the second leg of the race. Taege Engineering won this challenge at last year’s event. The Bank Challenge is next up on Friday March 6, when interest rates are put aside and instead the banks take to the race course. ASB Bank won the event in 2019 so the other bank teams will be keen to try and knock them off the podium. The main event is on Saturday March 7 where competitors can drive these huge machines on a purpose-built track with the tractor weighted according to its horse power to even up the field.

With three action-packed days of rural racing, the crowd will be there to cheer on their favourite team or competitor and experience the thrills of tractor racing. Entry forms are available on the field days website, www.northlandfielddays.co.nz

Meet GRANT FALLON

Northland Totalfert Field Consultant & National Sales Manager

G

rant has a natural affiliation with the land and stainable farming practices, he was born and bred at Bell Road Maungatawhiri, North Waikato, where his parents were farming after his father returned from serving in Africa & the Pacific in the second world war. Biology has always been of intense interest to Grant and he has worked in the agricultural -horticultural industry most of his working life starting with part time work in glass houses growing tomatoes and beans, also fruit orchards in his college years.

Grant and his wife Janice leased a 150 acre dry stock farm at “Little Huia” on the northern heads of the Manukau Harbour for seven years from the Auckland Regional Authority prior to moving to Northland in 1986 when they purchased a 42 ha property at Riponui, 34kms north west of Whangarei. This property is primarily used for beef, although they have planted about 50 mixed type fruit trees in an orchard that the grand children love to visit. About one third of Grant’s family property is covered in mature native bush where Kiwi, kauri snails and gecko also

call home, this is adjacent to Department of Conservation controlled kiwi reserves. “This reinforces my belief in caring for the environment and our native flora and fauna.” In the last 19 years as a biological/ organic fertiliser field consultant Grant has attended many instructional seminars in New Zealand and Australia, achieved a level 5 NZQA certificate in organic growing in 2004 and a certificate in small business management 2004. For several years Grant has been helping private and polytechnic classes with demonstrations in pruning fruit

trees, vegetable growing and conducting lessons on soil biology. As a fifth generation New Zealander, Grant has traced his ancestry back to 1838 in the Hokianga and Kaipara Harbours to some of the earliest pioneers and this has given him an interest in genealogy, in studying and achieving certificates through “Te Wananga o Aotearoa” in Maori (Te Waharoa), Mauri Ora, Tikianga Maori – Graduating in 2013. Grant’s other interests include “te Mahi Whakario” (Maori Carving), in various mediums e.g timber, bone, shell. Also landscape painting and on the rare

occasion (when he has any spare time) enjoys reading a good book. Bee keeping is a special passion of Grant’s and is an essential part of our horticultural/agricultural industry. Grant is D.E.C.A (Disease Elimination Control Authority) accredited and assists other hobbyist beekeepers in the Northland Region. Meet Grant at the totalfert site 653 in the Rural Pavilion 2 at the Northland Field Days. You can reach Grant on 021 370 505.

A

s New Zealand’s leading nationwide provider of quality milk vats and refrigeration systems, DTS’s milk and vat monitoring system, Vat-Man, is being included in the Fonterra Milk Vat Monitoring System (MVMS) rollout in Northland in April. The MVMS project is supporting farmers produce high quality milk by installing milk vat monitoring technology for milk volume and temperature. DTS Vat-Man ensures compliance of milk temperature as well as vat volume and agitator operation. Vat-Man also provides a comprehensive range of alerts to avoid catastrophic equipment failure that could lead to a vat of milk being dumped. Affordable, easy to install and simple to operate, Vat-Man can be incorporated into any current vat and cooling system and is also flexible to farmers’ needs and budget with three vat management solutions – Vat-Man Lite, Vat-Man Pro, and Vat-Man Auto. Vat-Man’s dedicated, secure cloudbased platform uses the Internet of Things to share key data with farmers, on-farm staff or external consultants. By monitoring these assets, farmers can

enjoy numerous benefits such as peace of mind with milk temperature measurement to ensure regulations are met, vat milk volume measurement, and proactive alerts on key equipment that mitigates the risk of catastrophic failures. Waikato farmer Mark Spooner has a straightforward description of his experience using DTS Vat-Man as part of Fonterra’s Milk Vat Monitoring Solution – “as the farm owner, Vat-Man gives me peace of mind”. Mark began trialling Vat-Man in February 2019 and was able to give DTS Vat-Man developers invaluable feedback. Running a 260 cow, 110 ha organic farm in the central Waikato, before Vat-Man, Mark’s level of milk and vat monitoring was rudimentary – simply a temperature sensor on the vat linked to a display. “We really didn’t have vat monitoring which means we didn’t have constant, reliable data coming through,” says Mark. “You can be meeting temperature targets at certain points, but not in between. People all believe their system is fine and up to specification, but they will find there are improvements to be made. Until you

Fonterra MVMS roll out run Vat-Man you aren’t going to know that.” Mark’s lack of reliable data came to a head when the farm switched from night pickups to day pickups. Following one Fonterra milk collection, the tanker printout said the milk temperature was four degrees higher that it had been just half-an-hour before collection when Mark checked on it. “The tanker temperature was way out to what I knew it had been, but I didn’t have Vat-Man to prove it,” recalls Mark. “We installed Vat-Man and it turned out to be really interesting as it opened up a lot of questions around our vat cooling. The reality was we had had a system in for many years and it wasn’t running at capacity. Vat-Man picked up a pre-cooling issue which we were able to improve simply through modifications to the plate cooler – and not having to spend $30K on another chiller.” What Mark really enjoys about Vat-Man is the access to constant information through DTS Live for himself or his herd manager at any time. “Monitoring the data is easy on my laptop at home or when away. I can

instantly check on milking start times, volumes and temperatures. Smart phone access to Vat-Man is even better because you have your phone on you all the time. You can compare key data by simply overlaying graphs.” Vat-Man’s equipment alerts can also help protect milk quality for Mark and his team. “Our system is to start our plate cooler immediately when we start milking, and then start the chiller later when there’s 3 to 400 litres of milk in the vat so it doesn’t freeze,” explains Mark. “When we haven’t started the chiller, Vat-Man gives us an alert!” One part of the Vat-Man vat and milk monitoring solution that Mark highly rates is its in-shed digital display for milk inlet temperature, vat temperature and volume, and confirming that the agitator is on. “I really rate it. You can just look up and see the milk temperature coming down as you are milking,” Mark says. “You can see the milk volume going up in the vat – helping you to switch to your second vat if you have one. The in-shed display means you can easily access some key information without having to pull your

phone out. It’s so simple, but so effective. It becomes a habit, so I am constantly looking at it!” So, with Vat-Man installed, Mark

now has peace of mind that he has realiable data to show his milk and vat temperatures are compliant. “I now have all data logged to analyse

the temperature. If there was an issue with temperatures not being compliant, I can pinpoint it to the minute!”

NRC Offers a wild food treat

Venison jerky with a watermelon salsa will be this year’s wild food treat to be given away by the Northland Regional Council to attract visitors to its marquee Northland Field Days between Thursday March 5 and Saturday March 7. A joint creation by the NRC, NorthTec Level 4 cookery students and their tutor Hughie Blues, the council expects to give away about 1000 portions of jerky over the three days of field days from the council’s usual location, site 251 on Tokoroa Road. Council Chair and Kaipara representative Penny Smart says over the past few years the council has transformed a variety of pest animals, plants and even insects into an array of edible treats all designed as a fun way to spark added public interest in its broader work at the Dargaville event. Last year’s giveaway was a ‘sticky pulled wild pork hawker roll’ but previous offerings have included rabbit rissoles, burgers, pies and pate all made from possum, wild pork, venison and goat meat pies, rabbit sausages and even ice cream made with wasp larvae on one occasion and wattle seed-flavouring on another. Penny Smart says the NRC has been successfully

collaborating with the hospitality students for field days for several years now and is pleased the two organisations will be working together again this year, a sentiment echoed by NorthTec’s Lisette Buckle. Ms Buckle, NorthTec’s Pathway ManagerHospitality, Tourism, Hair and Beauty, says the field days are a great opportunity for chef tutor, Hughie Blues and his Level 4 students to show off their culinary skills. “With the prevalence of wild foods and alternative protein sources, this is a wonderful way to display diverse, tasty dishes whilst highlighting the issues pests pose for our native fauna and flora.” Penny Smart says about 30kg of wild venison will be used for the jerky, the meat sourced from Blenheim company Premium Game because there’s no local venison stock “and council is obviously keen to see that remain the case!” Vivienne Lepper, the regional council’s Biosecurity Manager - Incursions & Response says three deer species – red, fallow and Sika – are currently found in Northland, but until relatively recently the region had been deer-free. “Both red and fallow deer are farmed, but sika

Vivienne Lepper, NRC Biosecurity Manager - Incursions & Response, left, and student chef Liam Dinsdale prepare for the field days at NorthTec deer are only here as a result of illegal releases.” Ms Lepper says 30 years ago there were no known feral deer in the region, but they’re now thought to be living in the wild in at least eight separate locations, three sourced from illegal liberations and five from farm escapes. While Northland feral deer numbers are thought to be low, there are still significant challenges, including ongoing escapes of farm animals and unfortunately, ongoing illegal releases by those keen to hunt the animals. Ms Lepper says legally, “anyone who sees or

suspects the presence of any feral deer in Northland, must immediately report the sighting to Northland Regional Council”. Anyone keen to try some of the venison jerky should visit the NRC marquee around 10.30am, 12.30pm or 2.30pm each day. Council staff will also be providing information and advice on various other aspects of its work, including coping with drought, best practice land management, improving water quality, eradicating pests, controlling weeds, protecting kauri and information on the Northland Water Storage and Use Project.

NEW CONSERVATIVE

New Conservative are at the Northern field days and party leader, Leighton Baker, welcomes you to pop in and see them at site 642

L

eighton spent a few years working in Tatarariki in the mid eighties on a stud Romney farm, with the odd day off spent at Glinks Gully, before moving to Auckland to take up a building apprenticeship. He now lives in Canterbury and apart from running his building company he is leading the charge in New Zealand to acknowledge and value the contribution that New Zealand farmers make to our economy. The current push to limit farm produce and make farmers the scapegoat for Climate change is both baseless and foolish. New Zealand’s farmers produce enough high quality food to feed forty million people and they, more than most, understand the importance of looking after the land which gives them their income. Our current crop of politicians have failed to understand that ruminant animals are not polluters and that if all the plant growth in New Zealand was taken into account, we are probably carbon Neutral already. Reducing production, and therefore income, on a false premise and with NO quantifiable benefits is incredible poor governance and New Conservative have been advocating for New Zealand to abandon the carbon trading scheme, withdraw from the Paris accord and spend those funds on research and development to discover pollution solutions. New Zealand exporting solutions to pollution would make a far bigger environmental impact on the world then even achieving a Zero Carbon economy as our contribution to world carbon output is miniscule. Other policies you might like to discuss could be our Justice policy which

addresses the cause of crime, not just the outcome. It aims to provide offenders with the tools to succeed outside of prison as well as holding them to account. No reform, no release. Our family policy which looks to reward and incentivise loving committed relationships as this is where children thrive. Our firearms policy is about repealing the 2019 amendments and having a truly democratic process. We aim to have administration of the firearms act removed from police and undertaken by a separate entity, much like vehicle licensing. Our referenda policy looks to make citizens Initiated Referenda binding on the government when they are supported

by 66% of voters. This would enable New Zealanders to hold governments to account between elections, something that we cannot do currently. Part of New Zealand culture is looking after the weak and vulnerable, however just giving handouts does not provide a long term solution. Hand outs create dependency and dependency leads to poverty. For real benefits we need to work harder at hand ups where we enable people to succeed rather than allowing them to fail. This will necessitate short term investment but result in long term advantages for both the beneficiary and the country. New Conservative is all about practical, positive solution based policies and we would welcome your input at site 642.

Northpower’s 90 year journey

Going solar at Matakohe Limestone Island

Northpower, your local electricity and fibre network owner/operator is proud to be celebrating 90 years since the foresight and vision of a few enterprising Dargaville individuals led to the establishment of the North Auckland Electric Power Board in 1930.

Before Christmas we replaced the off-grid power system at the Ranger’s house on Matakohe Limestone Island with a modern solar and battery solution, in order to support their ongoing conservation activities on the island.

Today in 2020, Northpower remains consumer owned and focused on delivering a robust and reliable essential service to our customers. Our approach to network investment empowers customers to make better choices on how they manage and use energy. We enable businesses to create value and growth in the region and contribute to improving our communities today and into the future. We are on target to invest over $20m in network upgrades this financial year, and expect to spend a further $130 m over the next 5 years. Since 1993, Northpower and the Northpower Trust have given back $217 million directly to electricity consumers in Kaipara and Whangarei.

We are keen to use the new system to learn more about how off grid solutions can support customers – so we headed back to the island last week. We were pleased to find the system working well, with the combination of the solar panels and battery delivering enough power for the ranger’s day to day living. The Ranger is delighted with the new system – particularly as he has not had to use his back up diesel generator since the installation. We have some early data from the system and will share more with you when we have some generation and usage trends and learnings.

We also support and sponsor local initiatives including, the Northland Rescue Helicopter, Taitokerau Education Trust and Healthy Homes Tai Tokerau, and the Wild Kiwi. Along with employing locally, we are passionate about creating training and learning opportunities within our communities.
