Win for Michelle as Top Forester

I feel extremely humbled and proud for what I have managed to achieve

proud husband, Nigel Harrison.” Michelle even supported and gave her time up to assist Mark Lavakeiaho, winner of the Emerging Talent Award this year, to set up his own silviculture business.” Michelle gives back a lot to forestry and the community. Not only does she manage the unglamorous aspects of administering a forestry contracting company, she is a Competenz trainer/assessor for both the family company and other local contractors, a skilled and experienced plant operator who holds staff and site visitors to account with health and safety.

M

ichelle Harrison, this years Skilled Forestry Professional of the Year, joins the line up of other well-deserved heroes of the industry however Michelle is the first female award winner at the Northland Forestry Awards since they kicked off four years ago. “Michelle epitomises the old saying “Women can have it all – a career and a family”, says Tracey Gent, Training, Health and Safety Manger for Grimmer Contracting Ltd. Michelle has a strong and giving personality not only in the development of the Wise on Wood crew and work but also within the community and the local education institutes. She has a fantastic attitude and is always striving to improve both herself and the crew’s health and safety, environmental and operational performance. She was once described as the woman behind a successful man but the roles have been reversed and she is a most deserving winner of this category. “Wise on Wood became a Safetree Certified Contractor last year and this would not have happened without Michelle driving it,” says her

Michelle has a strong and proven record of environmental consciousness and is well recognised both in with their crew, the community and the industry and as a strong and positive leader who is uncompromising in her protection of our native taonga. She has been instrumental in identifying and protecting a population of Kauri snails in Paerata Forest and she has been responsible for working with Northland kiwi experts to monitor and protect the population of North Island kiwi that Wise on Wood discovered within their harvesting block in Mangatoa Forest.

“I feel extremely humbled and proud for what I have managed to achieve. I felt proud of our whole crew. I know that if it wasn’t for the crew and our families, none of it would have been possible, said Michelle after being awarded. “Being recognised by the industry was emotional. It was the encouragement from PF Olsen and our love for the industry that we started Wise on Wood and Nigel’s parents giving us what we needed to start up. Without them we would not have had the knowledge, ability and finances to achieve what we have.” A redeeming feature of Michelle is that she is more than willing to share her knowledge and experience of many years and is a professional that leads by example and treats everyone with respect. She is an inspiration and an amazing role model within the Northland forestry industry. Nigel and Michelle Harrison started Wise on Wood together in 2015 and have managed to grow it to a very productive business, with a great reputation for health and safety, environmental awareness and sustainably profitable. In 2016 at the inaugural awards, Nigel walked away with the top award that night so the trophy once again will

INDEPENDENT ADVICE TO MAXIMISE PROFITS AND AVOID DISAPPOINT WHEN YOU HARVEST YOUR VALUABLE FOREST ASSET Don’t be persuaded to harvest without seeking independent forestry advice. We can help you to have a positive and profitable experience so you will want to plant a new crop and ensure your children reap benefits in another 30 years. Maximising harvesting profits requires good planning with strong knowledge of forest economics, crop optimisation, marketing options, forest engineering, environmental factors, inventory, and a fair valuation. Judges applaud quality nominees

F

our years ago, Mike Goodison had the privilege to speak on behalf of the judging panel at the inaugural Northland Forestry Health and Safety awards. The panel then consisted of Jacqui ApitaCoyne, Brett Jobe and Mike. Four years later it is still Jacqui, Mike and Brett, but a different Brett. Mike on behalf of the panel took the opportunity to thank Brett Jobe for the wonderful hard work and effort he put in while on the panel over the last three years of these awards. His knowledge and insights were invaluable and his humour, passion and commitment were appreciated. It is also an opportunity to welcome Brett Gilmore – he has a long involvement in the industry with vast experience, fresh thinking and ideas which are appreciated – Brett hails from the Hawkes Bay. Four years ago Mike recalled there was 280

guests packed into the Toll Stadium function centre. The judges reported back on the quality of the nominees, the difficult task they had to separate the eventual winners from the other entrants, the high standard of the material supplied for consideration and the honesty and helpful insights given by referees. Each year the report back has been along similar lines with the bar being raised higher and higher, the information supplied and the manner in which it has been supplied has improved and they have seen originality and innovation in the way information has been supplied. The judges have also seen emerging a philosophy and mantra that while the industry is striving to be productive, they maintain high quality with the introduction of more innovation in training, staff welfare and mechanisation across all aspects from silviculture to the finished

product. Thread through the nominations for companies and the employees, the judges see more and more health and safety as an integral part of the business, not a tack on or something that is imposed and only done when someone is watching. An effective system is one that weaves productivity, quality and the system to achieve these all together to ensure at the end of the day everyone in the industry is rewarded for the mahi and ensures all have the right to go home safe at the end of the day. Mike as representative of the judging panel expressed, “To all the companies and individual nominees, your families and workmates, thank you for entering or allowing your name to

go forward. It is brave to stand up and allow yourselves to be judged so again we thank you.” The judges discussed and debated, reviewed and re-read long and hard (very long) in some categories when trying to separate nominees. Finally in closing Mike reinforced that these awards rely on people being prepared to allow their names to go forward in nomination, be prepared to share the innovation and hard work they are putting into the forestry industry. He closed with a comment that the companies and contractors, “Keep standing up and showcasing the professionalism, innovation and progress being made in one of Northlands key industries.”

the industry and invest time into training. Lloyd Logging are always looking at ways to invest in areas of the business which improve efficiency and safer environments for their operators. ongratulations to an industry that was well due recognition for the economic contribution it makes to the local region. Through the initiative of the Northland Forestry Health & Safety Group, the Northland Forestry Awards became a reality. In 2017 the Awards were held for the second year and grew 200% in attendance by the industry - truly to be applauded! The Northland Forestry H&S Group want to continue to celebrate and acknowledge our Northland forest industry and recognise our skilled workforce, in 2019. The key objectives in having these awards is to benefit the region’s forest industry in several exciting ways, namely: • To attract skilled employees to the region as valued forest industry players • To up skill and lift the standard of the skill base of the forestry workforce • To provide an opportunity for the Northland’s forest industry to celebrate its skilled professionals • To unite industry players • To create a healthy and challenging competition amongst the industry The Northland Forestry Health & Safety Group encourages other businesses within the industry to become involved in this exciting event. Proprietors Gary and Allison Leslie are celebrating Northern Forest Products 20th anniversary. “We decided it was time to move home to Northland after a five year stint in Southland working in South Wood Export’s woodchip and Eucalypt plantation project led by forestry entrepreneur Keith Hunt who had earlier built the Triboard mill in Kaitaia where I started my forestry career in Triboard and Strandboard marketing after graduating from Canterbury in 1988. So we set up our own business in 1999 to play a part in harvesting and marketing the forests that were planted in the north when I was growing up” reflects Gary. “We sold our home in Invercargill and used that equity to get started. It’s been a long road and I wouldn’t want to start again, but I have no regrets, it’s been an adventure.” “I sponsor the Forestry Family of the Year Award because I know what it means to work in the forest industry alongside father, uncle, brothers, cousins and children. The challenges are easily offset by the rewards and it’s good to know who’s got your back. My family have been a great support getting started and still are really. Working with family is the hallmark of what it means to be truly local. Something worth encouraging and celebrating. It’s cool that this year’s award has gone to Ronnie and Pat Lloyd’s children from Kohumaru, across the other side of the Oruaiti valley south of Mangonui where I grew up. We went to the same school at Taipa and like me Isaac and the team have taken a risk, rolled up their sleeves, and created an opportunity. Being in business is about staying in business. Challenges will come, it’s not always profitable, but you have to hang in there with a business and endure the bad times to be able to enjoy the good later on.”

Northpine celebrate 20 years However, 20 years on, Northpine is still investing in timber manufacturing and implementing Keith’s original vision of creating a standout privately-owned sawmilling business. Keith retired in 2105 after a stellar career in the industry and Richard and Bruce along with their new partners, working hard at continuing their business and trying to figure out how to make money from wood processing. Northpine has always invested heavily in their greatest resource - their people - and the team at Northpine now comprises a workforce of just over sixty employees. Twice over the last three Northland Forestry Awards, they have won

sawmill at Kumeu, where Keith had a dramatic effect on the business using Kaizen principles and the empowerment of staff. A few years after they had all left Carter Holt Harvey, Keith convinced Richard and Bruce that establishing a new business from the defunct assets of the Waipu Timber Company would be a great investment. “There’s real money in sawmilling, lads!” he said at the time, recalls Bruce,” although what he didn’t say or possibly we didn’t understand was that the money would be ours, and that it’s a whole lot harder getting the money out than it is putting it in!”.

T

his year Northpine celebrate 20 years of operation. Forestry and timber manufacturing obviously go hand-inhand, and Northpine has been actively adding value to the local resource which needs to be celebrated and commemorated as they have withstood the vagaries of the industry. Keith Reay started Northpine in August 1999, after a long career with NZ Forest Products and later CHH Wood Products. Throughout his long, distinguished career Keith was a hugely influential and original thinker, innovator and manager. Northpine also proudly invests in the wider Bream Bay community through sponsorship and giving practical help whenever they can. This has included support of Waipu Rugby Club who won the Southern Districts Premiership this year(the first time in 140 years for Waipu Rugby). They also sponsor the 2nd Division team – also champions this year) and Takahiwai rugby league who took out their Premiership. That’s a memorable trifecta.

Northpine Scholarship opportunity

N

orthpine are now investing and supporting the future of our industry by encouraging individuals to continue their education and development. Training and personal growth enables people to see that there are worthwhile careers not just jobs - to be had in forestry. These careers can bring greater achievements, greater success and prosperity to Northland. Inspired by the lifetime achievements of their founder Keith Reay, and to mark their 20 Years Growing Stronger – Bruce Larsen of Northpine announced at the Northland Wood Council Forestry Awards Dinner that they have initiated a sponsorship of a new annual Forestry Vocational Scholarship, starting in 2020, to the value of $2,000 per year. This scholarship will be administered by Northland Wood Council. Application forms outlining the criteria for eligibility, can be downloaded from the Northland Wood Council website. They firmly believe that it is important that the industry never stops learning and that there are opportunities to be continually exposed to new ideas. Northpine believe the scholarship provides one such opportunity. The selection criteria are the specific standards used to identify qualified applicants who ultimately will be recommended as scholarship recipients. This list includes: • A student enrolled in full time relevant tertiary study or an employee within the industry who aspires to improve their skills, knowledge and value to their employer with extra study. • Pre course academic achievement, including grades, standardised test scores and achievement test scores. • Expected career outcome in specific industry activities – either forestry and/or timber manufacturing/processing industries. • Work history, awards and recognition. • Recommendation of Principal Tutor or employer. • Community/extracurricular involvement. • NZ Citizenship or Permanent Resident. • Normally a resident of Northland (Tai Tokerau) region of New Zealand. New vocation for women

T

he new category “Woman in Forestry Excellence”, in national forestry awards is indicating that the tides are a changing and women are being recognised for the work and the roles they are playing within the industries workforce. The numbers of nominations also are a sign that the numbers of women are increasing and that and there are a number of different jobs that they can turn a hand to. At the Northland Wood Council Forestry Awards last month, Michelle Harrison was the winner of the inaugural award for Woman in Forestry and went on to take out the top award, Skilled Forestry Professional of the Year, a double banger. She was described as having a strong and giving personality not only in the development of the crew and work but also within the community and the local education institutes. She has a fantastic attitude is always striving to improve both herself and the crew’s health & safety, environmental and operational performance. She was once described as the woman behind a successful man – the roles have been reversed and she is a most deserving winner of this category. Sponsor of the Woman in Forestry category, PF Olsen were able to congratulate Michelle as the first award winner in Northland and acknowledged the importance of women with being able to support the demand for highly skilled employees in forestry. Earlier in the year the Eastland Wood Council were first to introduce the category for women and winner Megan Costello, who is engineering manager at Ernslaw One took out the top prize. Organisers and judges were rapt to see the number and quality of entries in this first-time category in the Awards. Judges felt for too long, women had been an untapped resource for

the industry but are now really shining through. Judges faced a tough decision to find just a single winner from the nominations but in the end this individual stood out for the value she brings to forestry. Megan is known to work tirelessly to find solutions to minimize forestry’s environmental impact. Her co-workers admire her as one who shows positivity, dedication and passion and one who goes over and above to see a job through. Her commitment to environmental practices is well recognized and she is passionate too about health and safety. She has worked offshore and learnt all she can from those experiences. She’s a mum of two and still continues to further her education where she can. In June, at the inaugural Top of the South Forestry Awards the category saw a lineup of great women represented in forestry in that region and winner Heather Arnold was celebrated as a national industry leader in environmental regulations, standards and practices, winning the Women in Forestry category and and those who know her say it is fitting she was then also crowned the Skilled Forestry Professional of the Year. She wasn’t on hand to accept the supreme award or the Women in Forestry crown and was instead in North Carolina looking at forests. “I was blown away,” said the woman who has 22 years’ experience in plantation forest industry and currently working for Nelson Forests Ltd as an environmental planner. “I would never have expected this.” She was quick to congratulate all the “exceptionally skilled professionals” involved in the awards. “I am well aware of the work that you do day in and day out – congratulations to you all. I don’t consider myself to be any better than any of you. I am incredibly humbled by this award

– to be recognised by my peers in the forestry industry in this manner is something I would never have dreamed of.” Heather is credited with having made a difference both regionally and nationally in her environmental work. Judges described her as “without question, an expert in her field” and one who had an enormous understanding of just what was involved in forestry. Her talents had been well utilised in the design of national guidelines and standards.

Women have played an instrumental role in family companies for many years in forestry and have been more focused in the administration and health and safety management of business. Now they are venturing out to be part of the teams that work the slopes and operate the mechanised machines. The role of women is certainly changing and there are no complaints amongst the men, in fact the gender mix has been embraced and has been integrated into the forestry industry with open arms.
