LIVING ON PORT ROAD IN THE 1950s By Shayne Heape (ITM)

he Port Road area is a very familiar part of the world to local resident and Whangarei ITM owner, Shayne Heape.

From his current ofﬁce window, as far as the eye can see was Shayne’s families leased land, spanning back to the 1930’s. The memories feel like they were yesterday, even the sweet smell of fresh Pinot Noir grapes that decorated his Nana’s wrap around porch and endlessly fed the young hungry tummies.

As a child, Shayne’s family lived right down by the old wharf. This family home Shane recalls as a child was still standing down by the old wharf up until a few short years ago. “It was like the back of beyond here, a huge expanse for us kids,” he recalls. His uncle owned a market garden with a half acre strawberry plot in the 1950’s. One of the many memories to resurface during our conversation was

the generous picking of strawberries from his uncles land and the kids running to the hay shed to pig out on the juicy treats. The smell of sweet fennel is also a trigger. Fennel lined either side of the pipes where Shayne and his family played for hours. If the boys fell, they were welcomed a soft landing, the fall broken by the bushy soft leaves. This aniseed smell now takes him right back to that time.

As does the familiar harbour when he and his dad fished off the wharf or when his father would come home with dinner after fishing for flounder on what was then mud flaps as long since been reclaimed. Next to his Nana’s house laden with the grapes was the go-cart club and not as it is today. The kids would race the track and enjoy the freedom and isolation of the area. When time stood still. “We would play in the hills, climbing the toi toi trees,” Shayne remembers.

“It was an absolute hick town back then, a very cool place to live!” The history goes way back to when Shayne’s Great-grandfather was the chairman of the Whangarei harbour board in the 1930’s and his grandfather owned the piggery in the area. The land was sparse and only a few houses scattered the landscape. Kioreroa Road was no such thing, barely a right of way to the farmhouses when one would drive up and over the railway line. “One day we were sent to buy bread, there wasn't sliced bread back then. We walked home nibbling the inside of the loaf and when we got home mum just giggled (to our surprise) when we told her a mouse had got into it.” The second time, they ate the lot and weren’t so lucky! More recently, what was then Rosvall Sawmill, moved into the area in the late 1980’s when offered opportunity and space to expand and Shayne found himself in his childhood stomping ground again. Now a lot has changed, but the memories are just as clear. “I just love Whangarei,” he says. “I love what’s happening in this city and Port Road is just one part of that development.”

DONOVAN’S TRADE D onovan’s Trade Supplies, one of the most well-known businesses in Whangarei, is relocating to a new, purpose-built building at 261 Lower Port Road. Warren Parr, the current owner, is looking forward to being able to offer an even larger range of products to his clients.

Donovan’s Trade is a well-established company that began life as an electrical business, started by the renowned Donovan family. Back then, they specialised in electrical motor rewinding. In 1946 the company diversiﬁed into stocking hand tools and engineering supplies, and split away from the electrical side of things.

The original premises were located on Water Street, near where the Water Street Markets are currently held.

When talking about Donovan’s impending relocation, Warren Parr, the current owner, is obviously enthusiastic about the new premises. “The current location has served us well but the customer base has slowly but surely moved away from us to the Lower Port Road. We have basically run out of room to continue the growth of the business.” Donovan’s new premises boasts more than just a ﬂash paint job. It has been purpose-built to create a more efﬁcient space for customers and staff alike. They now have plenty of parking area for larger vehicles

to park without taking up all the available space.

Warren is particularly excited that they can now offer a wider range of stock, such as fastenings, which they simply did not have the space to fully stock before. Over the decades, the business has moved a number of times, but it has always remained locally owned and operated. Warren is justiﬁably proud of this fact, when so many similar businesses are nationally or even internationally owned. Because of this, Donovan’s has a clear advantage over their corporate opposition. They know their clientele, they live among them and work among them. Donovan’s also have the ﬂexibility corporate supply

companies lack in that they can stock whatever they want, they don’t have a head ofﬁce to answer to! “The business has steadily grown and has focused on providing a one-stop shop approach to supply everything you require in the way of engineering products. We’re a pretty decent-sized business now”. In fact, Donovan’s is the largest engineering supplies business in the region, consistently supplying customers from all over Whangarei and the Far North. “We’re excited about being back in the industrial hub. It’ll be great to be back amongst our customers, back to our roots, back to the core of the business.”

ort Nikau comprises one hundred hectares located on Port Road. The area is undergoing redevelopment from a working port to a modern urban space.

History

The area now known as Port Nikau was developed by the Northland Harbour Board pre-world War II as a base for Whangarei sea freight. Local politician Ralph Trimmer is widely credited as being the visionary who drove the development of this valuable asset for Whangarei. Port Whangarei as it was known, handled dairy products, bulk fertiliser, forestry products and general cargo. Dry store and cool store buildings were also constructed to support the region’s agriculture industry. As ships got larger and the Port outgrew its facilities, it was decided to move Whangarei’s high volume seafreight activities to Marsden Point, a transition that was completed in 2007.

Whangarei has long been recognised around the world as a boat/ship build and reﬁt location. Slipways and ramps built by the Harbour Board in the 1960’s are still very much in operation and contribute to the success of local businesses and jobs. The industry’s longevity can be attributed to strong relationships with international clients, built over years of quality work

at a reasonable cost completed by successive businesses. From 1965 to 1998, ship building became established as a major industry at Port Whangarei. Engineering company WECO was regarded as the leading boat engineering company in New Zealand during that time. At its peak WECO employed 250 and is credited by many as developing the skilled engineering labour force still leading the marine and engineering sectors in Whangarei today. The company was internationally successful building ﬁshing boats, tuna boats, dredges and barges and completing ship reﬁts. In 1998 WECO was purchased by Northland Port Corporation and became Northport Engineering. After further ownership changes, the ship building business was returned to local private ownership in 2006. A further boost to the infrastructure and strength of the marine industry came in the late 1990’s when Tenix Shipbuilding NZ was established to build New Zealand’s four inshore patrol vessels.

Current

While the port was transitioning to its new base, the redundant land and facilities were gradually acquired by private interests. These, along with other adjoining properties eventually became owned by one entity, Port Nikau.

Inspired by multiple port redevelopments around the world, Port Nikau presented the owners with a unique opportunity to develop a waterside environment for Whangarei that encompasses water access, open spaces, living, working and playing facilities. The unique land holding has deepwater access, three wharves, ﬂat terrain, existing buildings and in-ground infrastructure.

In 2012 the area attained ‘Port Nikau Environment’ status under the District Plan. The Mixed Use designation provides the framework to allow development with opportunities for residential, retail, commercial, marine and other activities. As a first stage, Logyard Road was opened in 2015, providing flat, industrial, freehold land to support growth of Whangarei businesses, especially the increasingly busy marine, timber processing and engineering sectors. Building on Whangarei’s international reputation as a ship repair and refit centre, the Marine Precinct has seen significant growth and investment at the end of Port Road. Two new facilities have brought increased activity and work. Southern Gateway Marina specialises in haul-out and refit of catamarans, while Oceania Marine’s Port Whangarei yard provides specialist travel lift equipment to haul out boats up to 100T. Only two minutes by boat to Limestone Island and ten minutes by cycle to Okara, the area is gaining increasing recognition

from visiting boat crews and locals for its proximity to town and waterfront features.

Future development

As Whangarei grows, the vision of high density living, close to the water and CBD, with connectivity to deep, good quality water becomes increasingly appealing to many people. Port Nikau will provide the extensive ﬂat open space, surrounded by water and close to town, to satisfy the city’s growth. Existing city-owned in-ground infrastructure inherited from the Harbour Board of the early 70’s is already in place and was designed and built to accommodate large scale growth. Like much of Whangarei city’s commercial land, the area is reclaimed. Having had over 30 years to settle, it has proven geotechnical qualities suitable for proposed uses. A planned link road will connect Kioreroa Road to Port Nikau. Using modern urban design planning principles, a concept has been developed identifying precincts for multiple end uses. The precincts are arranged to maximise use of the two kilometres of waterfront and integrate live, work and play activities in a sensitive and functional way. With Whangarei predicted to grow, Port Nikau is the centrally located blank canvas to paint a vision of a city ﬁt for purpose in the 20th century.

Sue and Simon Mehrtens started the business in 2001 and say the key to their success is quality and diversity, working with many sectors of the industry. They are known right throughout Northland for the high-standard of their products and the experience and skill of their tradesmen. The direct result of this? repeat customers. The many strong relationships they have built with other local businesses and individuals are testament to their consistently high-quality products. Their work can be seen in many places around the region, including along the vibrant Loop Walkway, where they recently worked with the Council to provide the many stainless steel structures you see there, such as water fountains, bike racks, and much appreciate dog bowls.

Sue and Simon are also particularly proud of their team with a mix of experienced tradesmen and apprentices. They take pride in teaching these young men a trade that they are passionate about, and enjoy seeing them hone their skills. Teamwork is vital to Absolute Stainless and the business could not run as smoothly as it does without them.

NORTHERN BENCHTOPS

ommy Adams of Northern Benchtops on Kioreroa Road has certainly seen huge change and growth in the Port Road area over the years. As a young lad he spent many an afternoon at his father’s tractor sales business on Lower Port road and has a strong connection to the area.

Their relationship with the community is also important to Sue and Simon and they are regularly involved with the Gateway Program where students from Boys’ High gain experience in the engineering sector. Often, if they are impressed by one of the students, they will offer him an apprenticeship.

The biggest change he’s noticed is that the focus of the area has altered. The arrival of large commercial businesses has attracted more trafﬁc and as a result, the Port Road area feels more like a destination rather than a mere shortcut to Auckland or into town. “Since our move (to Kioreroa Road) we have a clear street presence and we have a lot of people who see our signage and call in as they were already in the area.”

What you are seeing is the largest hardstand yard of its type in New Zealand. Norsand Boatyard with four and a half hectares of mostly cruising boats (last count 116) foreign and local , out of the water for annual maintenance. Norsand is also New Zealand’s busiest and most experienced multihull haulout specialists. A recent count showed 38 large cruising catamarans in the yard for maintenance.

BOAT YARD

Has hard stand provision for over 100 yachts. Their concrete slipway has a capacity for vessels of up to 120 tons in weight and 12m beam. Multi-hulls are a specialty at Norsand and they are hauled on a custom built hydraulic trailer capable of lifting a 40 ton multihull up to 1.5 metres high if required. All services are available on-site - boatbuilders, painters, engineers, welders, labourers, ﬁbreglass, osmosis repairs and riggers. Waterblasting and abrasive blasting services available. Norsand can manage your reﬁt, overseeing contractors on your behalf. Excellent facilities: Laundry, showers, toilets, BBQ and Wi-Fi internet facility Storage units available

At Norsand Boatyard catamarans are hauled on a custom built hydraulic trailer capable of lifting a 40 ton Multihull with a max beam of 12m up to 1.5 metres high if required. Heavier commercial catamarans are hauled also but on a conventional railway system. The railway slip can haul monohulls and catamarans up to 115 ton weight. This is a one stop service yard with all services available on site. Experienced boat builders, traditional and composite, painters, riggers, fibre glass & osmosis repairs (hull peeling), labourers, mechanics, marine engineers, hull extensions, rudder and dagger board construction and repairs. Marine shop on site, stocking Hempel, Jotun and International Marine Paint and Accessories. If required, Norsand Boatyard can manage your refit, overseeing contractors on your behalf. The yard is situated at the end of a quiet no exit street away from traffic noise and has a rural outlook across the river but is only 1.5km from the centre of town.

Norsand’s friendly and experienced staff will ensure you have an enjoyable stay. Facilities are excellent – laundry, showers, toilets, BBQ and a covered barbeque area for informal dinners or celebrations. With a wide range of onsite marine services, Norsand Boatyard is the place to reﬁt and repair your boat before continuing your journey.
