Whilemangrovesnumbersareincreasing andtheplantsprovideenvironmentalbenefits, therehastobeabalancebetweenlettingthem growandtrimmingthembacksotheydonot takeovertheharbour.TheNorthlandRegional Councildoeshavearegionalplanwithrules aroundpruningandremovalofmangroves, whichvaryaccordingtothesizeofthetreesand wheretheyare,soyoushouldalwayscheckfirst beforeremovingortrimminganymangroves. Sowhilemangrovesmayhaveabad reputation,theydohavemanyadvantages. Withalltherecentdevelopmentsaroundthe PortRoadtoPortNikauareas,weneedto continuetobeawareoftheimpactweare havingonmangrovesinourharbourand continuetoprotectthemtofindabalance wherewecanlivealongsidethem.
Workhasalmostbeencompletedonanew,$10million bridgeacrossHāhā/Limeburner’sCreekthatwill removethetrafficbottleneckintheareaandprovidea safewalkingandcyclinglinkalongPortRoad.

WhencompletedinOctober2022,thenew bridgewillprovidetwolanesfortrafficheading outofWhangāreiandathree-metrewide walkingandcyclingpath,whiletheoldbridge willcarrytwolanesoftrafficbackintotown, providingfourlanesoverall. Fundingforthis‘shovelready’projectcame fromtheCOVIDResponseandRecoveryFund, administeredbyKānoa-RegionalEconomic Development&InvestmentUnit.

heproject,beingundertakenbylocal companyUnitedCivilConstructionon behalfofWhangareiDistrictCouncil,will buildanewbridgeparalleltotheexistingbridge. Constructionisnearingthefinalphase,and thiswillinvolveconstructionofthepavement tie-ins,retainingwallsbetweenthenew andexistingbridges,andtheinstallationof guardrails. Toaccommodatetheseworks, temporarytrafficcontrolsonPortRoadwillbe inplaceandtheremaybesomeimpacttoroad userstravellingthroughthesite.
Additionalfundinghasalsobeensecuredfrom WakaKotahitopayfor53%ofanew,$6.7m,
two-laneroundaboutattheintersectionofPort RoadandKioreroaRoad.Thisreplacementforthe existingintersectionwillallowforgrowthinthe PortRoadarea,enablesaferturningforvehicles andreducedelays. Theroundaboutwillincludesignalised pedestriancrossingsonPortRoadandKioreroa Roadtoprovidesafepedestrianandcyclist crossingpoints,aswellascontrollingtrafficwhen trainspassthrough. Thisprojectwillfollowimmediatelyafterthe bridgeworksarecomplete.Theinitialworkis takingplaceontheoldfertiliserworkslandand willhavelittleeffectontrafficflows.Subsequent stagesoftheroundaboutconstructionwill affecttrafficflows,andfurtherguidanceonany temporarychangestotrafficmovementswillbe publicisedbeforebeingimplemented.
