t would usually be quite a cringe-worthy topic asking a teenage boy about his voice breaking, but not with Jack Trubshaw. He easily told me about the transition of his vocal chords as his singing career journeyed from that of boy soprano through the ranges to where it now rests at base. It is hard enough for this age group having to speak and not knowing what pitch is going to come out, let alone sing. During this crucial time, Jack lost his beloved singing teacher and founder of Opera North, Joan Kennaway, and his finely-tuned vocal chords derailed further. But now he’s back on track and, while he says it’s still a struggle to refine his sound, he still loves singing and it takes him to his happy place. Jack is a member of Opera North, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this month with a concert called Silver Linings. And it’s not just classical we’re speaking here – the 90-minute show will also feature modern pop and rock where soprano meets electric guitar! JACK’S JOURNEY:

Transitioning from the voice of an angel

Joan instantly recognised the perfect pitch and uncharacteristically signed him up on the spot. Recalls Jill: “From about the age of two he was singing all the time but, at four, I remember thinking to myself, ‘Gosh, he’s really got a voice that’s in tune’. It was just this beautiful high little boy soprano sound and it was just lovely.” Musically-talented herself, Jill approached her equally musical parents who knew Joan Kennaway. “I discussed it with them and we decided to wait until he was five and then I took him along to her. “She listened to him and I said, ‘So, what do you think?’ and she said, ‘Yip, I think he’s great’. But she said, ‘Just one thing; can he read? Because he’s got to be able to follow the lyrics along’. He was a really good reader and I said, ‘Yeah he can read’. So she took him on and never looked back.” After a little training from Joan, Jill says Jack’s voice became the ‘voice of an angel’. Joan wouldn’t usually take on kids so young but once said in an interview: “He comes in to see me and his eyes light up – how can I not teach that?” “She basically made an exception for him,” tells Jill. “Aged seven, she said, “Jack, I think you’ve got perfect pitch’. He said, ‘Have I?’ And she said, ‘Do you know what that means?’ He said, ‘No.’. And she said, ‘It doesn’t matter; if I ask you to sing me an A or a B, you can sing it straight away and you just know’.” Under Joan’s tutelage for the next eight years, Jack thrived and joined a choir performing in various concerts, regularly singing in vocal competitions and then becoming an active member of Opera North.

But it hasn’t been an easy, natural journey for Jack. With the tragic loss of his beloved singing teacher in 2018, the Year 13 Huanui College student spent a year in limbo with no guidance during the crucial years his voice transitioned, which took its toll on his vocal chords. As a result, his voice derailed somewhat. “I think Jack was quite lost for that year,” recalls Jill. Says Jack: “After Joan fell ill, I didn’t have a singing teacher for about a year and I picked up a lot of bad habits which kind of destroyed my voice so I’ve had to work to fix it and kind of had to retrain.” During this time, Jack’s voice was merging from soprano – the highest pitch, to alto – the lower female range, tenor – the highest male range and is now settling at base. “When I first started, I didn’t need as much training as I do now, I could just sing. Now, I have to focus on every single note and the technical side of it rather than just singing. It’s much harder to produce a nice sound effortlessly and you’ve got to use your body rather than just your vocal chords. I’ve now got quite a small range.” Before she died, Joan peered him with his current singing teacher Lisbe Jooste, who helped guide Jack’s voice back on track. Says Jill: “He went through a tough time but it was so nice to finally hear him singing freely again. He’s got some beautiful tone to it.” Among Jack’s biggest support group are his family with grandparents in their 80s who still sing in the Whangarei Choral Society choir and Jill, a member of Opera North. His brothers are also musically-talented and one of Jack’s favourite pastimes is singing together as a trio.

Jack and Joan had a close bond and he thrived under her singing tutelage.

Opera North celebrating 25 years with Silver Linings

“I have two younger brothers and they’ve already got bigger ranges than me which is so frustrating. They’re not as into (singing) as I am but they’re definitely good at it. “I like singing songs that have lots of emotion. I do kind of go into a zone when I sing, I just really love it. It relaxes you and it takes you away. It’s kind of a de-stresser when you can just sing and enjoy it.” Jack is now described by many as having the rare talent of “perfect pitch”, which Joan picked up on all those years ago, and this also lends itself to the art of conducting. Says musical director Emma Couper: “The great thing about Jack is his musicianship. He can hear what everyone is singing. He doesn’t need to rely on the piano. Having that ability within him is pretty much the best trait a young conductor can have.” It was Opera North pianist and conductor Clare Henderson who suggested Jack try his hand at conducting. “It had never occurred to me until about a year ago when Clare suggested I try it but I found it pretty enjoyable. It’s a challenge and quite different to singing. I thought it was just waving your arms around, you know, but it’s a lot more than that. You’ve got to try and communicate what you’re saying through your hands and keeping the beat is the main aim but also try to portray loads and keeping everyone in tune

through your hands. A lot more goes on than what I first saw. “It’s definitely opened more doors to me.” Jack will be debuting his conducting talents to the public at this month’s Silver Linings show alongside Jill, also performing. “I used to love it while he was singing boy soprano as he’d be sitting or standing beside me,” remembers Jill. “He had me on one side and his grandmother on the other all singing the same soprano - that was really good value. But now (as his voice has changed), he’s moved to other parts of the choir. These days I just really enjoy going to practices with him.” He will also be performing alongside others who have inspired him over the years. They include Lisbe, to whom he is grateful to have taken on his tutelage. He also cites music theory teacher Margaret Williams, who passed away in recent years and, of course, Joan. “She was a great role model in my life. I’d go to her once a week after school and she was so easy to talk to and get along with. She was always encouraging.” Adds Jill: “They had a really good bond. It was really upsetting for Jack when she died. She had a lot of pride in Jack and she set him on his journey. She really basically brought him to life with music.”

Back in 1997 a group of 18 singers and guest artists debuted a concert in a Glenbervie garden, unsure if anyone but their families would show. To keep costs low, the stage was made up of fruit bins loaned by Huanui Orchards and the singers had to “walk the plank” to mount this makeshift platform with the piano set up on the lawn in front. More than 500 attended and Whangarei’s Opera in the Garden was well and truly born becoming an annual summer event and attracting an audience of over 1,000. Opera North was established in 1996 by acclaimed opera singer and musical director Joan Kennaway and her equally well-known baritone husband Rick, specifically to develop the talents of aspiring young singers and to create opportunities for Northland singers to perform. With a long-held vision of an annual summer outdoor festival of operatic and classical music, Joan’s dream was realised when she acquired an orchard in Glenbervie called Operacado which provided the suitable garden venue for her dream. Joan passed away in 2018 three years short of Opera North’s 25th anniversary, which her Opera North family plan to mark with a “Silver Linings” show at Forum North this month. The 90-minute presentation will tell the story of Opera North over its quarter century as the beating heart of Northland’s musical cultural community. Opera North has nurtured the talents of Sophie Sparrow and Shaan Kloet (nee Antunovich)

and Shaan Kloet will feature a line-up of 50 talented musicians. The show is set to be a powerful performance covering a broad range of vocal characteristics, illustrated and brought to life with dance, acting and theatrics. The performance of two halves will use a narrative, written by well-known Northland director Lachie McLean, wrapped around music of classical operatic pieces along with songs from well-known musicals, modern pop and rock, featuring the electric guitar. Musical director Emma Couper, who is working alongside Roger McClean on this project, says it’s not every day you hear classically-trained vocalists and electric guitars in the same show. “But we want to demonstrate the breadth of what Opera North is about. “We have opera in our name, but people have come to expect so much more from us than just one type of music.” Since Joan’s passing, Emma, whose singing career began with Joan as her teacher in the early ’90s, has taken over the role as musical director and she says they’ve been big shoes to fill. “I was really nervous about taking over – it was very big shoes to fill - but I think she’d be pleased we are carrying on Opera North and the quality has, I think, got even better. We hope that she’d be proud.” Silver Linings will be performed at Forum North on Saturday April 17 at 7.30pm, and Sunday 18 at 2pm. Tickets are from Forum North, The Hub, or eventfinda.co.nz

EYES & AGEING Changes that occur in our eyes as we grow older can have a big effect on our vision.

rom the age of about 45 years, you should have your eyes tested every few years to check how well you can see and to look for signs of common problems such as cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration. All of these problems can be managed better if picked up early.

Keep your eyes healthy Did you know? Your eyes need three times as much light when you’re 60 as they did when you were 20? • Use good lighting. • Eat well – especially fruit and vegetables. • Wear sunglasses – reduce your risk of cataracts. • Quit smoking – reduce your chances of developing cataracts and other eye conditions. • Stay a healthy weight – being overweight increases your risk of diabetes, which can lead to sight loss. • Exercise – this stimulates good circulation, increasing oxygen intake which is important for eye health. • Sleep well – as you sleep, your eyes are continuously lubricated and irritants, such as dust or smoke that have accumulated during the day are cleared out.

Presbyopia (age-related long-sightedness) Get regular eye tests and wear the correct lenses As we age, the ability of eye lenses to focus decreases gradually. This makes it hard to focus on things that are nearby (known as presbyopia) and is the reason many people over the age of 40 need reading glasses. Reading glasses: • help the eye to focus on things that are nearby • need to be gradually increased in power as the eye loses its focusing ability

Cataract Clouding of the lens within an eye is called a cataract. Your risk of getting cataracts increases with age and many people over the age of 60 years have cataracts. Some cataracts may require surgery. Surgery is usually only advised when the vision has become so blurred that it's difficult to carry out normal visual tasks.

Macular degeneration In the over 60-year-old age group, gradual loss of central 'sharp' vision can occur. This is usually caused by changes in an area at the back of the eye called the macula. The macula helps with the sharp focusing needed for reading and other fine visual tasks. If you experience a sudden change in your vision, eg, distortion, reduced near vision or blurred central vision, you should see your doctor or ophthalmologist without delay.

Vet visit Neutering It is a good idea to look into getting your rabbit de-sexed. Not de-sexing your rabbits can lead to unwanted babies, sexual aggression in male rabbits and reproductive cancers in female rabbits. Your vet would be able to advise the best age to de-sex your rabbit.

You may not be able to head out and buy a pet rabbit this Easter, but you now have plenty of time to research them first.

Diet HAY HAY HAY!! Yes, hay is an essential part of a rabbit’s diet. Their diet should consist of at least 80 per cent good quality hay and fresh grass (not lawn clippings). Topflite hay range is an excellent quality New Zealand grown hay. In the range there is Timothy, Lucerne and Meadow. Each of the hays have the following qualities:

Lifespan A rabbit is not a pet that will only be around for a short time, it is important to keep in mind that a properly cared for rabbit can live 7-10plus years! During that time, they require daily interaction, good quality diet and a nice big space to call home.

Timothy Hay Timothy hay is widely known as the best choice of hay for rabbits. It’s key benefits include: • The sweet smell and taste encourage rabbits to forage and help to ensure that their fibre intake is sufficient. • High in fibre and easily digested • Chewing on fibrous hay helps to keep growing teeth ground down naturally • Low in calcium compared with other hay varieties. This reduces the risk of urinary stones, a common condition affecting rabbits that take in excess calcium.

Housing A rabbit should have access to suitable places and supplies to: • rest and sleep in comfort • eat and drink undisturbed • exercise and explore safely hide when afraid or feeling insecure • shelter from the weather including wind, cold, rain and sun • interact with (and escape from) companions • play, chew whenever it feels the need

Adopt over shop When possible, it is a great idea to adopt over shopping for your new rabbit! The SPCA usually have a lot of rabbits that need new homes, so this is a great way to gain a new family member and give the rabbit a loving home!

Vaccinations Contact your vet for vaccination details. If rabbits aren’t vaccinated and they catch one of the diseases it can be fatal. Rabbits can be vaccinated from 10 weeks of age and then need to be done annually. Teeth/nails Rabbits teeth and nails need to be regularly checked as they both can grow quickly. Sometimes rabbits will need their teeth and nails to be tended to by a vet but a way to help rabbits naturally keep teeth and nails shorter is by giving them things to chew and scratch on in their hutch. Enrichment, toys and treats • Rabbits are intelligent social animals. They need toys and treats to keep them entertained. • For exercise, it is good to have different levels in their hutch so they can climb up and down, hop in and out and have different spaces to hide. • It is important to have different toys in their hutch such as treat balls and chew toys; this will also help with grinding your rabbit’s teeth down. You will find a great variety of toys at your local pet store. • Delicious and nutritious treats are ideal as they promote emotional health, will prevent boredom and can encourage bonding and interaction between you and your pets. There are a lot of different treats available, treats that are naturally high in fibre will be the most beneficial for your rabbits. Having a pet rabbit can be a bit more work than commonly thought, but if you can meet all of the required needs for a rabbit then you can be assured that having a rabbit will be a fun and rewarding new family member. fter having to cancel our January 31 Medieval Madness 2021 event due to a local Covid case, we are giving it another go! Our annual Easter Sunday event has now become “Medieval Easter Madness”, combining regular activities from both events. So if you can envisage lords, ladies, princesses and archers hunting for that elusive Easter bunny card that will earn them an Easter egg, it will be hopefully something like that.

We are very grateful that both Clan Celtica, the awesome tribal thunder drumming band from Auckland, and the equestrian team, including mounted archers, were able to change to the Easter weekend. They will both be giving performances during the day. There will also be belly dancers, minstrels, traders, jugger, face-painting, blacksmith, activities with Whangarei Medieval Club, and Caro’s Crazy Critters with pony rides and lots of farmland babies for the kids to interact with. Lots of foodies and great coffee. The day includes free entry to the Museum and Kiwi House, Tai Tokerau Northland’s only opportunity to see live Kiwi and Tuatara plus

various species of native gecko. The Museum tells stories of the local natural and social history, and everyone is welcome. The Kiwi North resident vintage clubs will be open and big trains, mini trains and tractor will be giving rides. he Whangarei Heads arts community is delighted to bring you another Arts Trail this Easter Saturday and Sunday April 3 & 4, 10am - 5pm. Artists from Onerahi to Whangarei Heads open their studios and community spaces each Easter to show and sell their art, so it’s a great time to get family and friends along to meet the artists and see their workspaces and creations, from ceramics to photography, painting to jewellery, and metalwork to hot glass. After Covid cancelled last year's event, we have been busy collating a group of wonderful artists and several halls in the Whangarei Heads area as well. A variety of art and crafts are on display and for sale

Things to Do in Northland Hot Diggity Band

Legends of country rock are heading to the Bay of Islands this May.

he Bay of Islands Country Rock Festival is forging ahead with plans to hold the popular three-day event after having to cancel last year’s festival due to Covid-19 lockdown restrictions. Festival organiser Shirley May says the decision to try again this year has not been an easy one as the festival can only be held if lockdown restrictions remain at Level 1. However, the venues, musicians and community are keen to try again. The festival is featuring almost 50 New Zealand bands, with some available because they are currently unable to travel overseas. Legends include Susanne Prentice, from Christchurch, Gray Bartlett, Brendan Dugan, Eddie Low with Midnite Special, and Jodi Vaughan who will be performing as Sisters in Country with Aly Cook. “It’s a who’s-who of New Zealand’s top musicians,’’ Shirley says. Despite having no overseas acts, some of the performers will bring their versions. Partially-sighted singer Bevan Gardiner is doing a tribute to John Denver, Hot Diggity Bluegrass will have the crowds stomping their feet with their energetic songs and the Karen Davy Band is planning a tribute with “The NZ Dolly Parton Experience”.

Multi-award winning guitarist Phil Doublet will be performing with his new wife, Lana, who has also been bagging some awards of her own for song writing. Champion fiddler Marian Burns is back to delight the crowds with her skilful musicianship and comedy repertoire while another performer known for her jokes and crowd rapport is Joy Adams who will be performing with the band Three Plus One. Other highlights include Koltrain, The Songsmiths from Wellington, Coopers Run, the Dan Cosgrove Band, New Zealand Variety Artists Club Rising Star award winner Carson Taare and internet sensations The Harmonic Resonators.

Shirley says the festival, which has been running for 32 years, has become an iconic event which brings tourists to the Bay of Islands during the winter season. “It is only possible with support of the local accommodation businesses which help us with free rooms for the musicians. Hihiaua Cultural Centre

Reclaim, Restore, Renew At the heart of Hihiaua Cultural Centre is a vision to reclaim, restore, and renew traditional knowledge and practices.

n line with this, we began the month of March with a special celebration on the coast - the dawn re-opening of Mokau Marae in Whangaruru. A special new feature on the back of the meeting house is their local guardian, a sea bird named Tukaiaia, designed and sandblasted on by some of our carvers. The work (pictured) demonstrates how traditional knowledge and designs can be expressed in contemporary forms. Next up was the Tai Tokerau Māori Business Awards hosted by Te Hiringa. Hihiaua was humbled to receive the award for Best Not-ForProfit, which was dedicated to our previous chairman, the late Richard Drake. Our thanks go out to all those that helped make the Stage 1

development possible, and to all those that fill Hihiaua with life and laughter. Congratulations to our whānau HĀ, History of Aotearoa and the other inspiring Māori businesses who were also successful on the night, including the supreme winners North Drill Limited. Moving into April, we are looking forward to hosting Paora Tiatoa’s exhibition, Beauty & the Beast, which will showcase a selection of screen-prints that reimagine Māori images from the British Museum. His works will be on display from April 9 until May 1 and the public are welcome to attend the opening at 5pm on Friday April 9. Second up is the first Kākano workshop run by HĀ, which will take place at Whangarei

Girls' High and Hihiaua Cultural Centre between April 12-16. Students will actively engage in local history through the use of art and create a piece that represents our history and what they envision for our future. Things to Do in Northland PACKARD MOTOR MUSEUM – VEHICLE OF THE MONTH

1951 Studebaker Champion

erhaps the most radically designed motor vehicle in the car collection at the Packard Motor Museum is our 1951 Studebaker Champion. Studebaker, based in Indiana, was founded in 1852 and produced horse-drawn vehicles. Interestingly, their first car, produced in 1902, was electric and they didn’t move to petrol until 1904. Over the years, they developed a reputation as a styling leader. However, by 1949, the company was facing stiff competition. Hence the introduction of the ‘next look in cars’.

Fishing tips & tales Mahi-mahi are a fish known for their impressive fighting ability and for being very good eating. These fish have stunning colouration when first caught; a bright green-blue back fades into a golden belly with small black spots on its sides. Iridescent colours are seen on freshly-caught fish - the dorsal fin is electric blue and other fins are yellow or orange, Mahi-mahi are not caught in big numbers around New Zealand but a few are caught during our gamefish season.

The 1950/51 Studebaker was considered radical. It had a three-point front styling which incorporated a spinner front grill, complete with a circular chrome moulding and propeller hub in the centre. Because of this, the car was nick-named the ‘Bullet or Bomber Nose’ by many people. The car was designed by Virgil Exner and featured a doubleended body with integrated mudguards. It was designed to look like an aeroplane with its wrap-around rear window giving a similar feel to a Douglas DC3 cockpit. To add to the aerodynamic look, the boot-handle mimicked a tail-plane and the bonnetemblem was a stylised miniature aeroplane. The design came out in three models, the low-priced Champion, the mid-range Commander and the longer wheelbase Land Cruiser. These cars were years ahead of the competition and proved a winner with 1950/51 being the best years of sales for the company. The Champion is powered by a 169ci side-valve straight-six engine of 80bhp. In 1951, Studebaker introduced its new 232ci V8 engine (rated at 120hp) in the Commanders and Land Cruisers. Interestingly, the ‘Pink Ladies’ in the 1978 movie ‘Grease’, drove a pink convertible Studebaker ‘Bullet Nose’. These cars are considered a true classic of their era. Unfortunately, Studebaker ceased operation in 1966.

Tim Mann was recently fishing with his boys way out behind the Poor Knights Islands in 1000m deep, and, using marlin lures, his three boys, Ashton, Quin and Joel, each caught one of these amazing fish - well done guys. I guess dad as skipper and a watchmaker got the timing just right. Outside Whangarei Harbour, snapper, kingfish, kahawai, and trevally fishing has been productive with slow jigs, lures and soft baits all getting results, especially in depths of 15m and more. But!!! our harbour is fishing very well for snapper from the entrance right down past

Kissing Point. Wesley, whose yacht is on a pole mooring at Kissing Point, has been rowing a short distance toward the lift-up bridge and catching good-sized snapper. Other boat owners from this area have also been successful. When you are catching fish, make a note of the tide. Tides play a big part on when the fish bite. I have a good spot just outside Parua Bay, only fishes on the last two hours of outgoing tide. Another spot I like a bit further out will fish most tides (not many spots do this) and another spot back toward Onerahi fishes best the first three hours of incoming tide. A good moon phase will fish well the first two hours of outgoing as well. Fish often and take notes - over time you will get more successful. Ask other fishers you encounter at the ramps - while some spots are top-secret, most anglers are happy to be helpful. Fishing magazines can also be a big help with baiting types/most successful bait presentation methods etc. We are very lucky to live in such a beautiful area, get out and enjoy it. – John Vowless

Nowadays, people are more than happy to park a car outside or a sacrifice a room in the home to become a permanent space for fitness and wellbeing. We’ve seen this trend rise with homeowners in New Zealand since the first Covid lockdowns, as people made use of yoga or workout apps streaming online. Now that working from home a couple of days a week is still going strong, people are keen to get on track to a healthier self without heading to a gym. Here are a few key steps to start creating your dream home fitness set up. The first step is to write down a wish list of all the equipment you would use if you were going to the gym. It is important to craft the space around your fitness journey. Some of you might be able to afford one or two machines, others just mats, dumbbells and weights while others might have space and budget for a complete high-end home

gym that replicates the entire gym routine. Organisation is key to making a fitness area work, so lay out the space the right way from the beginning. In a professional gym, everything has a place and sufficient space to properly use the equipment, so don’t try to squish gear into a nook that is too small because then it won't get used. Give yourself some breathing room. Next, invest in a good organising system for

storing equipment pieces - big heavy things on the ground and lighter pieces on wall to free up floor space. Don't overlook the functional aspects of the space. If equipment such as the cross-trainer needs plugs, then work out a layout plan before you get the electrician in to add more. Lighting in professional gyms is usually quite bright to make people feel alert and invigorated

Some high-end home gyms have specific lighting plans drawn up to create different zones for different workouts in the space. A flow of fresh air is critical, so consider a cooling heat-pump in or even just a fan. Opening a garage door might not be so great in winter's sideways rain or the entrance isn’t getting fresh air flow. Flooring is crucial. A concrete floor, hard and attracting dust and dirt, just isn’t going to feel like a healthy sanctuary! I recommend part of the flooring is easyclean vinyl with a section of rubber matting for the weights area. Rubber helps with vibrations, gives some structural support for the floor and is also more hygienic. A bonus of lift-out rubber matting is that if the room isn’t 100% dedicated to workout space mats can be removed when the space is needed for something else. Technology is also important for a home gym as more and more people join in virtual classes online. It is much nicer to have a video up on a nice big screen rather than squinting down at a phone or laptop - and it greatly enhances workout performance too.

Flame-grilled Pizza Margherita *This recipe makes three pizzas

Pizza Dough • 500gm Spelt flour or Tipo 00 flour or 50/50 each • 1 tsp salt • 350ml warm water (30°C) • 1 tsp active dry yeast mixed into the warm water to activate Mix ingredients together in a mixer or by hand for ten minutes, until you get a sticky, but not wet dough. Cover the dough and let it rise for up to 2 hours or until it has doubled in size. Punch it down and form the dough into a large ball. Cut the ball into three equal pieces and shape each piece of dough into a ball. Set aside and cover in a damp tea towel. Leave to rest for about an hour. Sprinkle flour and coarse semolina or fine corn meal on the bench. Press out the balls and stretch into a thin crust pizza, pressing any air out to the edge. Leave a 2cm thick edge to the base and make the middle nice and thin. Carefully place the base onto the floured paddle, adjust the shape and get ready to add your toppings.

you wish you had There is nothing like a holiday soaking up a wine region's delicately crafted drops, and then taking a few bottles home to savour.

ith more of us exploring our world class wineries around New Zealand there is a whole new problem to solve: where to store these good wines when you get home. Or, at least, the bottles that don’t make it straight into a glass! When storing wine, you don’t need to have a purpose-built wine cellar, although that is pretty boujee if you can! Instead, there are ways to integrate wine storage into your current home. You can store wine in one of two ways: refrigerated and on show, or hidden and non-chilled. Steve White, owner of Stonyridge Vineyard Waiheke, says kitchen designers in the past have got it all wrong when storing wines in an open rack integrated into the cupboards. “A kitchen is quite possibly the worst place to store wine because it is so warm, unless you go for a refrigerated option." White prefers the French brand Eurocave wine fridges. "The technology is the best and the ambient lighting makes your collections

quite a feature, with your most prestigious labels on display." In our design studio our clients often have an integrated refrigerated cabinet as part of their kitchen design wish list. We always clarify - will this unit be for storing and display purposes or is it for consumption - because we approach the design and product specification differently. A non-refrigerated option for wine storage generally means an out of view solution; somewhere in your home where it is cool dark, such as a basement or on the south side of your home. Or think about the unused spaces under your stairs, wardrobes, or under-utilised cupboards.

The collection needs to be stored horizontally which will assist with keeping the cork damp (if your bottles have them) and the sediment away from the cork. You can also maximise the number of bottles you can store which means more wine. I am a fan of the black wall-mounted racks. They are perfect for building wine storage under stairs, as they come in different heights so can be staggered to fit under the tread. I’ve also found that they are a perfect width to fill in those small nooks behind cupboard doors, and are often, conveniently, the depth of a bottle. Going for a high-end bespoke solution is also a good option if you have a dark and cool place that you would like to make the most of.

Remember that bright reds, yellows and oranges are jarring, while browns and whites are boring and drab. Instead, choose soft, muted tones that will make you feel calm.
