Hello from Hong Kong where I am currently attending a professional development seminar. One of the topics being discussed is this sense that if you show up too much in this reality, if you're too happy, having too much fun or being super successful in your field of work — you'll be judged and people will cut you off at the knees to keep you from being even more of the above. The truth is, no-one can do that to you unless you believe in it, so check your attitudes and beliefs around what this actually is. Is it yours or someone else's point of view? What is the value of buying into it? Does it prove to others they were right and you would fail or is it what you do to stop yourself going any further so you have another reason to make yourself wrong? Are you committed to making judgments more valuable than your creative capacities? I hope not!!! What people think about you is none of your business, and totally irrelevant if you are truly leading yourself into the greatest life you can create . Do not give judgment power to destroy you. Empower yourself, out create limitation and see what else is possible. So the next time you hear Tall Poppy Syndrome being mentioned, leave it where it is — it's not real, it's created and the less people entraining to it, the more people will choose something different. Change your thoughts, change your words, change your life!

Celebrating mums ... the most important With Mother’s Day next Sunday, SAVVY looked up some Northland mums
SAVVY columnist and business owner Philippa Mannagh (32) is mum of three to Madison (8), Boston (6) and Willow- Mae (6 months old) and looks forward to Mother's Day more than her birthday each year.
WHAT IS A MUM? A mum is everything and much more than what can be explained in one paragraph. A mother is unconditional love, a mother is self-less, a mother puts everyone else's needs before her own and her heart stretches in all directions, for miles on end, everyday, for the rest of her life. What is the most important thing you have learnt from your own mother? To be a kind person and to give your time to those in need, including animals (if not even more so for her haha) and… to harden up, because life is rarely fair and that is ok, you just need to stay positive and keep on moving on.
WHAT IS THE MOST VALUABLE QUALITY IN LIFE THAT YOU DESIRE TO PASS DOWN TO YOUR CHILDREN? To think of others before themselves and not to get too caught up in this electronic, fast paced world but to treasure friendships, family and “real life” experiences that will shape them into caring, down to earth adults.
HOW WOULD THE PERFECT MOTHERS' DAY PLAY OUT FOR YOU THIS YEAR? A good nights sleep to start with, then the simple things in life - kids jumping into the bed in the morning, a strong coffee and a long hot shower. Maybe brunch at the town basin with the family, a stroll along the river in the sun and a day of relaxing, not running around doing everything but sitting back and making memories. No fighting and moaning!
Sandy Hatherell (31) is mum to four boys, Jaedin (12), Calem (11), Riley (10) and Braylee (4). Sandy juggles her time looking out for other people’s children as well as her own, running a before school breakfast club and holiday programmes to help out working families.
Chocolate is good too and if we are talking perfect here, I would meet my mum for a wine or two at a cosy restaurant for tea and talk late into the night.
WHAT IS ONE THING YOU SAID YOU WOULD NEVER DO PRE-KIDS BUT NOW, AS A MOTHER IS A DIFFERENT STORY? So much! I would never have “those children” throwing the tantrums in public places because I would have parented them better and my kids would have been angels because of it. Oh, how parenthood humbles you and snaps you out of judging others quick smart! No one tells you how hard it can be at times.
WHAT IS YOUR FONDEST MEMORY AS A CHILD? Growing up with my grandparents so close to us in a small town. I have fond memories of simple times, lots of imaginative play and small family trips when we could. Life seemed safer, slower and more innocent. I grew up in such a secure, loving family home and for this I am so grateful.
WHAT IS A MUM? A mum is someone who cares, loves, shows affection. She teaches, works around the clock, is selfless, willing to go through everything with their kids and make things work to pay for their needs and education.
WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU HAVE LEARNT FROM YOUR OWN MOTHER? To be honest at all times as you don't get anywhere in life with lies.
WHAT IS THE MOST VALUABLE QUALITY IN LIFE THAT YOU DESIRE TO PASS DOWN TO YOUR CHILDREN? To always be true to yourself stay

strong and believe in yourself.
HOW WOULD THE PERFECT MOTHERS' DAY PLAY OUT FOR YOU THIS YEAR? No sibling rivalry between my 4 boys for a day.
WHAT IS ONE THING YOU SAID YOU WOULD NEVER DO PRE-KIDS BUT NOW, AS A MOTHER IS A DIFFERENT STORY? Never argue or loose my temper in front of my own children.
WHAT IS YOUR FONDEST MEMORY AS A CHILD? The weekend drives to somewhere different each time.

job in the world, and we love them Jane Frazerhurst (40) is full time mum to Milla (3) and Georgie (17 months). She spent 13 years in London and is a qualified primary school teacher. Jane facilitates ‘The Motherhood' Facebook page that offers an online coffee group service for parents.
Stacey Wilson (32) welcomed her daughter Heidi Neve (6 1/2 months) into the world late last year and now juggles her part time role at Whangarei hospital working in SUBU with her exciting new mum duties. This will be Stacey's first Mother's Day.
appreciate it. Only you can make yourself happy so don’t rely on someone else to do it for you. The importance of family and friends. Coming from a large extended family we were always surrounded by family. When life gets difficult, as it does from time to time, you need your family and friends. Mine have always been there and helped me through the hard times. They have certainly been there to celebrate the good!
WHAT IS A MUM? I think a Mum is someone who has been blessed with the responsibility of helping with raising a child. Hopefully a Mum is loving unconditionally, leading by example and allowing room for the child to become the best adult they can be.
WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU HAVE LEARNT FROM YOUR OWN MOTHER? I spent a lot of time in hospital as a child and she always taught me that no matter how bad things are, there is always someone worse off than you. So it's important to appreciate what you have and help those in need where you can.
WHAT IS THE MOST VALUABLE QUALITY IN LIFE THAT YOU DESIRE TO PASS DOWN TO YOUR CHILDREN? There are so many, and it's a little difficult to choose one but... contentedness. I think it stands you in good stead to be able to be happy and content with where you are at in life, even while striving for better things. Life will be tough and times but it helps to try to be grateful and satisfied while looking forward.
HOW WOULD THE PERFECT MOTHERS' DAY PLAY OUT FOR YOU THIS YEAR? It's my first Mother's Day! I'd love a card with a sweet message on it and that's about all really - I'm not too hard to please... Mostly I'd just love to be spending time with my wee family - maybe a picnic
WHAT IS A MUM? at a park somewhere and a perhaps even a little bit of chocolate!
WHAT IS ONE THING YOU SAID YOU WOULD NEVER DO PRE-KIDS BUT NOW, AS A MOTHER IS A DIFFERENT STORY? So many things! You tend to do whatever it takes to make it through the day - one day at a time, I've realised. It's easy to say you'd never say, bedshare or give a dummy or leave your baby to cry but it all looks different on a background of minimal sleep and hormones! I've learned to be much less judgemental than I was!
WHAT IS YOUR FONDEST MEMORY AS A CHILD? Road trips with the whole family were a lot of fun — once we took my aunt’s house bus on a trip to the snow. My dad is a very hard worker so it was always nice to spend time together doing special things!

There are many different types of “mums” but what they all have in common is that they love and care for a child unconditionally, putting their needs ahead of their own.
WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU HAVE LEARNT FROM YOUR OWN MOTHER? My mum taught me how to be a good mum. When my first baby was born we were living with my parents as we had just returned from living overseas. Bringing a new baby home is scary but my mum gave me the confidence to trust my own abilities and instincts. There is something empowering about your own mum telling you that you are doing a good job.
WHAT IS THE MOST VALUABLE QUALITY IN LIFE THAT YOU DESIRE TO PASS DOWN TO YOUR CHILDREN? Be happy! Find the good in things and
HOW WOULD THE PERFECT MOTHERS' DAY PLAY OUT FOR YOU THIS YEAR?
I would say a sleep in but I have entered the Mothers Day Fun Run in Paihia - I didn’t really think that one through did I! I am hoping after that we will have a nice lunch somewhere.
WHAT IS ONE THING YOU SAID YOU WOULD NEVER DO PRE-KIDS BUT NOW, AS A MOTHER IS A DIFFERENT STORY? Since I worked with kids I was pretty good at never saying never BUT one of the things I did say was that I would always make sure that my husband and I would have time away from the kids. What I didn’t factor in was that when I had small children I wouldn’t want to go out! I just want to go to bed. Eight o’clock and I am thinking about climbing into bed.
WHAT IS YOUR FONDEST MEMORY AS A CHILD? Being really happy. That joy that kids have just doing simple things like riding my bike, swinging on the swing and singing at the top of your voice, fishing for sprats off the wharf. Simple things like that make me smile thinking about them.

The unwearable truth is in there Full closet but nothing to wear? Time to chuck a few things out

OARD, NOUN. a store; a stock; large quantity of anything; a hidden stock; to collect; to store secretly; to stockpile; to accumulate. You are either a hoarder, or you are not. I am a hoarder — wardrobe hoarder, that is. “I’ll keep that just in case.” “I might need it.” “I might wear that one day.” Sound familiar? I do get a bit of flak from my daughter about whether I actually need all those shoes and handbags. But who saves the day when she is desperate for an evening gown, shoes and bag for aspecial occasion? Mum to the rescue. We all remember that pair of shoes or jacket we wished we’d kept. Be consoled, because fashion styles and colours change quite dramatically each year and those items probably would not have looked that great after all with the other current trends. When wedge heels were back in fashion, I remember thinking about a pair of red strappy shoes I bought in the 70s, wishing I had kept them. However, even if I had, my feet have spread too much to fit them now. Still, back to the wardrobe hoarding. There is only one remedy and that is a plan of action for which you will need a couple of hours to concentrate on de-hoarding your wardrobe. Sometimes it’s helpful to have a friend around for another opinion on whether or not to keep that bridesmaid dress from 20 years ago. It’s far quicker and less painful to get an expert in to help with decisions. It will save you a lot of time, heartache, and money. So many people jampack their wardrobes with stuff that’s too big or too small, or too old. I have assessed and made

over hundreds of wardrobes, one of which has stuck in my mind. The owner had kept every garment from the preceding 50 years. As I left, all I could see were huge piles of clothing she’d agreed would go to the local
drama society. Win, win. Most days we sift through things that need not be there, trying to find something to wear. This is because we tend to have wardrobes full of “orphans”. By this I mean too many
individual pieces, so it becomes very difficult to match colours, assess proportions and get the balance right. Buying outfits and building on them is the best way to achieve a workable wardrobe
and it eliminates the risk of mistakes. It’s too easy to say, “I want that” or “I just have to have that” without thinking about what it will actually go with that you already have in your wardrobe. You end up with pieces that don’t go with anything else and you then head off to find something for that to go with. Sound familiar? See if you can rearrange your clothes into ‘‘Outfits’’ and ‘‘Categories’’. Categories are made up into sections of Home Comfort, Casual, Dressy Casual, Eveningwear, Special Occasion, Work Gear, Exercise Gear, Outdoor/Garden gear. Outfits fall within these Categories, so you really need to sort into Categories first. Now you’re halfway there. Throw a Category on the bed and you will see more easily what goes with what or the gaps you need to fill to make up Outfits by adding a jacket or maybe just a scarf or a pair of shoes to pull things together and to blend the colours.

here are so many events to go to at this time of year, including weddings, the races and the looming ball season. Everyone is chasing that great outfit, and the perfect dress you are not going to see everyone else wearing at the same event #howembarrassingthat wouldbe Here’s a tip to remember when searching for your ultimate dress: there’s a fine line between sexy and
overexposed. You have to think about balance and you don’t want to show all your assets at once. If the dress is short, complement that style by covering up your arms. For a low-cut style of dress maxis are always a winner. If you opt for backless then try to find a style with a high front. Another way to look at picking your dress is to always only have one of your assets on display at a time . . . think suggestion rather than revelation.

Get body confident with new treatment
In a recent Caci body survey, over 50 per cent of people said they are reasonably happy with their body shape, but have a few areas they would like to change. ChillSculpt is Caci’s new nonsurgical fat reduction treatment that uses cryolipolysis technology to freeze and reduce fat cells. Caci is focused on helping women get body confidence, ChillSculpt helps alleviate the stubborn areas of body fat that just won’t seem to budge, no matter how often you diet and exercise.
THE SCIENCE BEHIND CHILLSCULPT ChillSculpt is Caci’s new nonsurgical fat reduction treatment which freezes and reduces fat cells. It is ideal for those who have stubborn pockets of body fat that cannot be easily reduced by diet or exercise particularly around the back, lower abdomen, hips, waist and thighs. The technology behind ChillSculpt is called cryolipolysis. Cryolipolysis uses controlled cooling to cool fat below body temperature, crystallizing the fat cells without causing damage to the overlying skin. Subcutaneous fat cells are naturally vulnerable to the effects of cooling therefore as a result of the treatment, fat cells die and over several months they are naturally eliminated
through the body’s normal metabolic process. The result, a reduction of the fatty tissue layer. With over 1 million Cryolipolysis procedures worldwide, it is proven to be a safe and effective treatment for non-surgical fat reduction. For a limited time, we are offering all new ChillSculpt programme members a chance to find your fit with FITBIT Flex: Set goals, track progress, and even compete with friends! The slim, stylish device is the perfect motivational tool and for a limited time, simply sign on to a ChillSculpt programme from April 20- May 31, 2015, and receive one free!* ChillSculpt is available at Caci clinics nationwide, and is ideal for those who have stubborn pockets of body fat that cannot be easily reduced by diet or exercise, particularly in the: stomach: lower abdomen, hips: muffin tops, waist, back: bra strap area and love handles, thighs, saddle bags. Don’t for get ‘you time’ M
other’s Day; that day of the year where we celebrate our beautiful mums and all you do for us. Where you can sleep in, relax and spend time doing what makes you happy, without feeling guilty for doing it. From the outside looking in it often seems that women not only put their children first but everything else in their lives goes before them. We have become a culture of busy. Multitasking has become a demand of our lifestyle; not only do we raise kids, manage households, work hard in our jobs but fit in everything else that’s needed to keep our world turning. It’s tiring just thinking about it. And we give ourselves just one day a year to reward us for all that hard work, 364:1 it’s hardly fair. It would be unrealistic to say you should set aside a day a week just for you but that the time you do spend on yourself is valuable and not something to feel guilt over. And that maybe, just maybe, you deserve more ‘you time’ than you give yourself now. But what about that guilt? That giant red siren that starts screaming in the back of your mind the moment you think of something else to do that’s more important right now. Or if you

think someone is watching you have down time and will judge you as vain, irresponsible or neglectful. Guilt is a cruel emotion we torture ourselves with, an excuse we use to put ourselves at the bottom of the ‘to do’ list. As children we look to our mothers as role models, not only on how to act towards the world around us but also how to treat ourselves. And if, as a mother, you do not take time to build your happiness, put yourself last every day or even forget to nurture your self-respect, your child will follow suit. Then we’ll look back and wonder why she/ he has this mind set, without seeing it in ourselves. This may be hard to read; but to change it will mean you and future generations will benefit.

It’s not to say put yourself before your children but you deserve to be equal. Love and care is not tangible and limited, it is infinite; you do not take love away from your children by giving yourself more. Like they say, a smile is contagious, so is self-love and self-worth. Why not set a date to do one thing each month that you really enjoy, that you don’t often get time to do and keep the promise with yourself by doing it. Share something you’re good at and teach your children your skills. Tackle one thing that challenges you, trust me you will be proud of yourself and teach your son or daughter to overcome their fears. Share a photograph you love of yourself with those who love you, if you don’t have one go get one. You deserve to buy that luxury item you desperately want rather than something average. Get dressed up and take your kids out to dinner or enjoy a family night in. So value yourself more, live with less guilt — it will make you happier, more confident and increase yourself worth. Not only will this make you a nicer person to be around, your children will start to act as you do. They will learn to be just like you; happy, confident and know the value of their abilities and self worth. A strong woman will raise a strong child.

Cider vinegar may aid gout sufferers Herbalist LES helps address health issues the natural way
My elderly aunt has had a few really bad episodes of gout. She takes a drug called Allopurinol but is there anything natural she can take as well to help? Gout is quite common in New Zealand and is a very painful form of arthritis (inflammation of the joints sometimes referred to as gouty arthritis). The most common place for gout to develop is the ball of the big toe; however the joints of the feet, ankles, knees, hands and elbows can also be affected. It is unusual for gout to affect more than one or two joints at a time. Gout occurs when urate crystals accumulate in your joints, causing the inflammation and intense pain of a gout attack. Urate crystals can form when you have high levels of uric acid in your blood. Your body produces uric acid when it breaks down purines — substances that are found naturally in your body, as well as in certain foods, such as steak, organ meats and seafood. Other foods also promote higher levels of uric acid, such as alcoholic beverages, especially beer, and drinks sweetened with fruit sugar (fructose). Normally, uric acid dissolves in your blood and passes through your kidneys into your urine. But sometimes your body either produces too much uric acid or your kidneys excrete too little uric acid. When this happens, uric acid can build up, forming sharp, needle-like urate crystals in a joint or surrounding tissue that cause pain, inflammation and swelling. Allopurinol reduces the level of uric acid in the body and can be very helpful but there are also some inexpensive measures your Aunt can take to help herself. Firstly, she should drink lots of water and this will help to weaken the uric acid Apple cider vinegar can also help gout and arthritis. The acidity in apple cider vinegar will help relieve acute pain. You can also add honey to it to boost the body’s anti-inflammatory response. Mix one teaspoon of Bragg Apple cider vinegar in
a glass of water and drink two times daily Epsom salts are another useful ingredient for treatment of gout and other forms of arthritis. The high amount of magnesium present in Epsom salts will also improve the condition of the heart and help to lower high blood pressure. Soaking the affected body part in warm water mixed with Epsom salts relaxes aching muscles and relieves pain. For a leisurely bath, add two cups of Epsom salt to warm bath water.and soak your body in it until the water starts losing heat. Do this once a week or, if you have severe gout, you can try it two or three times a week. An English study has shown that drinking a concentrate made from tart Montmorency cherries, which possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant
When everything becomes a pain Diet, exercise and therapy can help sufferers find some relief properties, helps clear excess uric acid from the body in just a few hours. Drinking just 30ml of the concentrate with water twice a day led to lower blood uric acid levels and reduced inflammation. Al, products mentioned are available in Hardys, Kerikeri and Greenworld in Kaikohe. Also in most good health stores. ■ If you have a question for Les please email her: herbalist@littleherbalcompany.co.nz

HEN struggling with chronic pain, many often feel their concerns fall on deaf ears. Friends, family and sometimes even physicians may fail to empathise with the debilitating effects of the condition, which has no physical symptoms. Just because chronic pain lacks physical manifestations, it doesn’t mean the battle is without casualties: sleep loss, decreased productivity and strained relationships are just a few of the things that may result from chronic pain conditions. An estimated 100 million Americans live with chronic pain, according to the American Academy of Pain Medicine. Many of those sufferers are dealing with conditions like osteoarthritis, sciatica, fibromyalgia, and diabetic peripheral neuropathy, among others. Although each individual experiences pain differently, some effective pain management techniques, including prescription medication, can provide potential options to try before costly surgeries or potentially addictive narcotic pain therapy. Talk to your doctor to find out if these tips can help supplement your chronic pain regimen.
Be active It can be difficult to think about getting out and exercising when you’re struggling with chronic pain, but light exercise can actually help soothe the discomfort from certain conditions. Look for low-impact physical activities like yoga, walking or aquatic exercise to get
you started on a manageable exercise routine.
Eat healthy foods Establishing a well-balanced relationship with food can help to maintain a healthy weight, and it can also provide the energy and nutrition needed to maintain an active lifestyle. Certain foods, like cherries, ginger and hot peppers have ingredients that may help to reduce pain.
Get a good night’s sleep Two-thirds of people suffering from chronic pain report they don’t get quality sleep at night, according to the National Sleep Foundation. Creating a good sleep environment is the first step towards improving your sleep — consider experimenting with blackout shades or white noise machines. Devices that track sleep can also be beneficial to help you analyse your sleep activity.
Try acupuncture and massage Many have experienced pain relief through age-old traditions like acupuncture and massage. Acupuncture is believed to work by increasing endorphins and blood flow throughout the body, helping to reduce pain. Therapeutic massage is another potential pain-relief option for many sufferers of chronic pain, as the masseuse will encourage muscles to loosen, releasing pain and tension as well. Many conditions cause chronic pain and each individual experiences pain differently. As such, there are many medication options available to help treat different kinds of chronic pain. Talk to your doctor to discuss lifestyle adjustments and non-medication options.

Eyelids key to the protection of your eye Y
our eyelids play a key role in protecting and lubricating your eye. When you blink, your eyelids sweep away debris and help spread moisture over the surface of your eye. The eyelid skin itself is very thin, containing no subcutaneous fat, and is supported by a tarsal plate. This tarsal plate is a fibrous layer that gives the lids shape, strength, and a place for muscles to attach. Underneath and within the tarsal plate lie meibomian glands. These glands secrete oil into the tear film that keeps the tears from evaporating too quickly. Some eyelid disorders are common and have only cosmetic significance, while others can be more serious. If you suspect that you have any of the following eyelid disorders, consult with your GP or an ophthalmologist to determine what treatment is best for you. Entropian is an anatomic defect where the upper or lower eyelid turn inwards, so that lid margin rests and rubs against the eye. Entropians are mainly caused by maturity and wisdom (ageing) but can also be caused by scaring of the lids from trauma, previous surgery, burns, infection or inflammation. The eyelashes rub against the surface of the Cornea, causing tearing, irritation, infection, which can lead to ulceration of the cornea and scarring. Severe entropion can be painful and cause vision loss by damaging the cornea. A corneal ulcer can form and become infected. If irritation is mild, eye drops may be enough to protect the eye and keep you comfortable however, the most common treatment of an Entropion is correction with surgery. Surgery may be needed to correct entropion if it poses a risk to the health of your eye. Ectropian is where the lower eyelid grows lax, droops and turns outward. Because the lower eyelid can no longer distribute tears across the eye, tears fall onto the face instead. The lower eyelid may also not be able to close all the way, exposing the eye to air. The eye may become dry, red and irritated. Causes are mainly from ageing. As you get age, the ligament that connects your eyelid to your skull, and the muscles that sit under and around your eyelid, may weaken. This can cause your eyelid to droop. Other, less common causes of ectropion include: ■ Damage to the nerves that control the eyelid. This is often seen in the neurological condition, Bell’s Palsy. ■ A lump or cyst that develops in the lower eyelid. ■ Damage to the eyelid caused by trauma or burns or as a complication of a skin condition, such as contact dermatitis, or from previous surgery. ■ Congenital Symptoms may include, mucous
discharge from your eye, crusting on the lids, redness and irritation of the eye, watery eyes, and a dry eye which can be sore and feel gritty. How the condition is managed will depend on its severity and the underlying cause. Artificial tears and ointments may be used to reduce inflammation in your eyelid and help lubricate the eye, easing irritation, surgery to tighten the lower eyelid is often required for long-lasting relief. This is a relatively minor procedure that takes about 45 minutes and is carried out under local anaesthetic. This is usually a day stay procedure carried out on an outpatient basis which means that you won’t need to stay in hospital overnight. Ptosis (drooping eyelids) is a functional defect with drooping or sagging of the upper lids. Ptosis can have several causes. In patients with diabetes the droop may be caused by the paralysis of the nerve that supplies the muscles of the upper eyelid. Ptosis can be age related with weakening or slippage of the (membranous connection of the) levator muscle to the upper lid, or it can be congenital. Traumatic injury or scarring of the levator muscle or its tissue connection to the lid can also result in eyelid droop. Abnormal functioning of the levator muscle as seen in Myasthenia Gravis or other generalised muscle disorders also allows the upper lid to droop. Some people may experience obstruction of vision as well as headache and fatigue from overexerting brow muscles. Persons experiencing such symptoms may need surgery for relief. Dermatochalasis (excess eyelid tissue) is a big word meaning excess eyelid skin caused by atrophy of the elastic tissue. Usually a fold of skin hangs over the lid margin. Patients complain of a heavy, hooded feeling eyelid, and looking tired all the time. The excess skin can affect your vision by blocking the view. If it affects your vision, surgery may be considered to remove the excess skin (blepharoplasty). Blepharoplasty is usually done under local anaesthetic as a day case in theatre. It is not just a cosmetic procedure, it will restore the

blocked vision. Insurance will cover Blepharoplasty if the patient meets their criteria. Blepharitis is an inflammation of the edges of the lid margin. This disorder is sometimes associated with staphylococcal infection; however, people diagnosed with rosacea and seborrheic dermatitis are more likely to develop it. Symptoms of may include the sensation that something is in the eye, itching, burning, swelling, redness of the eyelid edges, watery eyes, sensitivity to bright lights and loss of eyelashes. Dried secretions may also make the eyelids sticky after sleep. Trichaiasis is a pathological condition. Misdirected upper or lower eye-lashes that turn inward to the eyeball. These lashes may scratch the Cornea. Causes: after chronic blepharitis, severe eyelid inflammation or injury or damage to the eyelid. Trichiasis differs from entropion in that the eyelid position is normal. Symptoms: The eye becomes red and irritated, feels as though something is in it (foreign body sensation), and develops tearing and sensitivity and sometimes pain when exposed to light. If the condition persists, scarring of the cornea can occur. Treatment: An eye doctor can remove the eyelashes with forceps. If eyelashes grow back, other methods can be used to remove them, such as electrolysis (use of heat and electrical current to destroy the hair follicle) or cryosurgery (use of extreme cold to destroy the hair follicle). Blepharospasm is a spasm of the muscles around the eye, causing involuntary blinking and closing of the eye. In severe cases, patients may not be able to open their eyes. Spasms often worsen with fatigue, bright light and anxiety. Blepharospasm can also be caused by other eye diseases, however its cause is often unknown. Women and those with thyroid disease are more susceptible to blepharospasm. Treatments may include injecting botulinum toxin into the muscles, anti-anxiety medication or surgery. Lumps on the eyelid. Just like
anywhere else on the skin, lumps can occur on the eyelids. Many lumps are simple cysts i.e. meibomium or chalazion, and should be seen be Seen by your GP especially if the lump increases in size, changes colour, has an irregular shape or bleeds. It's possible that the lump could be skin cancer. If the lump is skin cancer, it may need to be surgically removed. Most skin cancers are basal cell carcinomas and don't spread to other parts of the body, although they do continue to grow on the lid. Less commonly, the lump may be a squamous cell carcinoma, which rarely spreads to other parts of the body. If the lump is dark in colour, it could be a melanoma, although this is relatively rare. A melanoma will need early treatment because it may spread to other parts of the body and can be dangerous.
Chalazion or Meibomian gland cyst. This is a swelling of oil glands in the eyelid, usually due to a blocked duct. Symptoms of a chalazion occur when the eyelid becomes swollen, irritated or red, or when a painless swelling develops on or under the eyelid. A chalazion that is large enough can rub against the eyeball, causing irritation or, rarely, vision changes. Chalazions occur for unknown reasons, but are most common in people with rosacea and blepharitis. There is sometimes confusion with a chalazion and with a stye. A stye is a pimple-like infection of a sebaceous gland or eyelash follicle, and is superficial to the tarsal plate. Styes are painful, while chalazions are not. Typically, a chalazion goes away within a few weeks. A third of chalazion’s will resolve on their own. No long-term consequences occur. A chalazion is not contagious. Treatment of the chalazion may include the following: ■ Application of warm compresses for five to 10 minutes, four times a day, to reduce swelling and promote drainage of the gland ■ A prescription for antibiotic eye drops or ointments if a bacterial infection is suspected to be present. ■ If a chalazion creates significant symptoms, mild blurring of vision, or lasts for weeks, or comes back, an ophthalmologist may recommend surgery to remove it. If the appearance of the chalazion is bothersome, surgical removal may also be indicated. ■ If Surgery is necessary, it is usually done through an incision in the inside of the lid and therefore should leave no visible scar. Although tumors of the eyelids do occur, a chalazion is not a tumor and has no malignant potential. This surgery is usually preformed in the Ophthalmologists rooms. ■ With multiple chalazia or recurrent chalazia, a generalized abnormality in
the oil glands should be considered. One such condition is acne rosacea. This can be treated with long-term oral antibiotics i.e Tetracycline, or Doxycycline to alter the consistency of the oils produced by the glands. The use of warm compresses prior to sleep and cleaning the lid margins with baby shampoo can also decrease the chance of getting chalazia in the future.
Stye is an infection of one of the three types of eyelid glands located at the base of the lashes. Usually caused by bacterial staphylococcal infections, the symptoms of a stye include pain and inflammation of one or more regions near the eyelid margin. Applying warm compresses for 10 to 15 minutes at a time, three to four times a day, can be effective. Sometimes topical antibiotics may be prescribed. If the stye persists, your ophthalmologist may choose to drain the stye through a small incision. Yellow plaques on the eyelids. Flat yellow patches (plaques) over the upper or lower eyelids are called xanthelasma. Although these plaques are harmless, they indicate you may have a high cholesterol level. See your GP to assess your risk factors for future blood vessel problems, such as heart attacks and strokes. It's important to seek treatment if you have high cholesterol, high blood sugar (diabetes) and high blood pressure. Stopping smoking will also help reduce your risk of developing future blood vessel problems. Eye Lid Swelling is a condition of excessive fluid in the eyelid. Most often, eyelid oedema is caused by allergic reactions to products such as eye makeup or eye drops, or allergens such as pollen. While most causes of eyelid oedema are not dangerous, this condition can also be a symptom of Trichinosis, a disease caused by eating undercooked meat, or other serious infections. Symptoms of eyelid oedema include swelling, itching, redness and pain. If you suspect you have eyelid oedema, you should contact your GP or Ophthalmologist as soon as possible. Swelling of the eyelid can press on the eye and increase intraocular pressure. Infections, if untreated, may lead to orbital cellulitis which can threaten vision. Treatment of eyelid oedema is dependent on the initial cause. Your ophthalmologist will work to rule out any infection that may be causing your eyelid oedema. Often if the oedema is caused by an allergic reaction, removal of the item will ease symptoms. Where this is not possible, such as with oedema due to pollen, cold compresses, antihistamines and/or immunosuppressive drugs may be helpful.

Top make-up tips
Make-up expert Julia O’Neil gives ball goers some tips for the big night. MATTE OR DEWY FOUNDATION FINISH FOR BALL MAKEUP? I prefer a matte finish for ball makeup as it eliminates excess shine which can show up in photographs. It also tends to be more long lasting, especially when a primer is applied underneath. Try Maybelline New York Baby Skin Pore Eraser and Maybelline New York SuperStay Better Skin Foundation. If you’re prone to oily skin, apply a powder that is designed to reduce shine, such as Maybelline New York Matte Maker Powder, to your t-zone.
WHAT ARE SOME POPULAR MAKEUP LOOKS FOR BALL NIGHT? Metallic eyes feature strongly this season, particularly in shades of gold, bronze and silver. A gold smokey eye is a popular celebrity red carpet look and is a great option for ball night. Try Maybelline New York Color Tattoo Pure Pigments in Wild Gold, blending it up through the crease of the eyelid using your fingertips. Next, apply Maybelline New York Master Smoky Liner in Smoking Charcoal in a thick line across

the lower lash line, using its smudger to blend the colour. Lastly, apply two coats of Maybelline New York Volum' Express Pumped Up! Colossal Mascara. Graphic eyeliner is also popular this season, and is ideal for those that love to play with makeup. Take a liner, such as Maybelline New York Master Graphic Liner, and draw a line from halfway across the top lashline on the thicker angle, extending it out from the corner of your eye. If you prefer a cat-eye flick, try following the angle from the corner of your eye up to the outer corner of your brow.

Special role recognised on special day C
elebrated in countries around the world, Mother's Day recognises the achievement that is motherhood — and the role women play in caring for and raising children. Complementing Father's Day, this day recognises the years of mothering that often go unacknowledged — and unpaid. In New Zealand, Mother's Day falls on the second Sunday in May each year. Where did these Mother's Day traditions begin? According to some, mothers were worshipped in ancient Greece during the festival of Cybele, a Greek goddess and mother. The ancient Romans got in on the act, giving gifts during the Matronalia holiday. In the 16th century, Christians in Britain and Ireland would visit their ``mother church'' each year on the fourth Sunday of Lent — Mothering Day, when mothers and their offspring would be brought together. If you're looking to spoil your mum, try something extra special. Hold a Mother's Day picnic. Invite your family to a park, maybe somewhere that holds good childhood memories. Mother's Day is a time for husbands and children to stop and give thanks to their mums. It is a time to recognise mothers'

tireless efforts in helping to solve life's everyday problems. Families should pull together to make this day extra special for mothers. Mother's Day is a day for you to get in touch with your mum and tell her just how much you care — especially if you live
away from home. You may like to give mum a rest from the kitchen and household chores too. How about cooking her her favourite meal? Little things mean a lot to busy mothers.
Whatever her interests are, follow them for the day.
Preheat oven to 200C. Grease a 12-hole muffin tray. Sift together flour, baking soda and salt. Stir in sugar and chopped ginger. Stir melted butter, eggs and pineapple (including juice) into dry mix, mixing until ingredients are just combined — do not overmix. Divide mixture into the muffin tray. Bake for 15-18 minutes until golden. Leave muffins in tin for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool.
DON'T FORGET PREGNANT MUMS Mums-to-be are sometimes overlooked on Mother's Day but this will be special for them too, as they contemplate motherhood.

Spoil mum .... she deserves it I
t's Mother's Day next Sunday, a time when mums should all be appreciated and spoilt for at least a day. There’s a few things that most mums would love on Mother's Day.
BREAKFAST COOKED AND SERVED It could be at home — or even better out. Breakfast out is great as you can indulge in food that you wouldn't normally have the time or energy to cook at home. You don't need to feel so guilty after a big breakfast as you have all day to work it off.
AN OUTING Mothers spend a lot of time at home and often trying to relax at home is hard to do as there is always a job to be done. The idea of Mother's Day is ``no jobs'', thus the need, perhaps, is to go out. A mystery trip would tick the box here!
A PRESSIE OR TWO Who doesn't like pressies? What do we get Mum this year? It need not be expensive. Living gifts are one of the first things that spring to mind. Plants, whether they be for the garden
or house is one of the things mums are bound to like. They are colourful, come in many shapes and forms, can be
productive and help feed the family, give fragrance, look beautiful and last for months, if not years.
Ideas include bright and colourful cyclamen. These are one of the best-value flowering plants that are perfect for
Mother's Day. Red, white, pink, two toned or purple flowers adorn this wee plant for months. There are mini cyclamen as well which look great planted in a bowl and used as a centre piece on the table, either indoors or out. They can also be planted out in the garden and will brighten any dark spot through the winter. Mini Phalaenopsis orchids are another super flower for Mum. Easy to care for and very long flowering, these are a treat. Fragrant and flowering hyacinth bulbs or Tete-a-Tete daffodils are another great idea. These have been especially grown to flower for Mother's Day and will fill the house with scent. You could also give something that will suit the outdoors like a flowering hanging basket, a potted dwarf lime tree, gardenia, daphne or vireya rhodo. Try Lavender with Love ... it’s a little different in that it flowers through the winter. Potted or gift wrapped it would make a splendid gift for Mum, or get a few and plant them in a sunny spot in the garden for her, then surprise her on Mother's Day with your handi work. Whatever you do this Mother's Day, enjoy the day with your family.

Give your Mum time not stuff She nursed you through countless childhood illnesses, taught you to tie your shoes and make a mean omelette, and she’s still your go-to source for good advice and your favourite home-baked cookies. Are you really going to just give Mum a pair of socks for Mother’s Day? You can do better than that . . .
I
N THE tradition of a current pop-culture meme, here’s a “give this, not that” list of Mother’s Day ideas:
GIVE: Your time
Last year, 44 per cent of mothers surveyed by online deal site PriceGrabber said they wanted quality time with their family for Mother’s Day. Whether your family includes adult children who live and work far from their childhood home (and Mum) or a busy family with young children, it can be hard to find time to spend with each other regularly. On Mother’s Day, devote the day to Mum. Whatever you choose to do together — dine out, visit a botanical garden or just hang out at home — you’ll be giving her the gift she wants most: time with you.
Don’t give: Stuff
There’s a difference between a thoughtful gift that has meaning, and something clearly bought out of desperation just so the giver has something to hand over on Mother’s Day. Mums know the difference. Things like cowboy boots, sunglasses and even designer purses were among the items mothers said they didn’t want in a survey. Don’t wait until the last minute to buy something she
may not want. Put some thought into the gift a week or two before the big day so you can be sure you’re giving her something she really wants, like a piece of jewellery, her favourite bath products, or an attractive scarf.
Give: A great meal out It’s easy to understand why dining out was on the list of most-wanted gifts for mothers in every geographic area surveyed. What could make Mum happier than enjoying a great meal with her family and not having to cook it herself or clean up afterward? Taking Mum out for meal is a time-honoured Mother’s Day tradition and restaurants can be
busy on the second Sunday of May so make sure you book in plenty of time. When choosing a restaurant, look for one that will please her palate with familiar flavours, good food and the kind of warm, comforting ambience she creates in her own dining room or kitchen. Family style restaurants are a good choice because there’s something on the menu for everyone.
Don’t give: Practical kitchen items No matter how much Mum says she wants a new electric can opener or how much she needs a new set of pots and pans, don’t give these items on Mother’s
17 Rathbone Street, Whangarei Phone: 430 2375 www.globaldiamonds.co.nz
Day. Mums are more than just the sum of the time they spend in the kitchen. If she really needs and wants those things, why not give them to her at some other time of year, for no other reason than she’s a great mother? Or, if you must give something kitchen-related for Mother’s Day, consider something that’s pretty and fun, too, like decorative serve ware. Buy from a store that offers free gift wrapping services, making it easier to give a good-looking gift.
Give: Gift cards
A gift card to her favourite store was another popular selection of mums. But don’t think giving her a gift card is all you have to do. Find just the right card for her,
and then offer to accompany her on a shopping excursion to her favourite store. That way, you’ll be giving her two things she wants most — a gift card and time spent with you.
Don’t give: Technology Do you really want to give Mum a smartphone that will be obsolete by next Mother’s Day? Or a tablet so complicated she’ll never figure out how to use it? If your mother’s digitally inclined, chances are she already has the tech she wants. And if she doesn’t, trying to choose it for her can be like trying to pick a pet for someone else — never a good idea. Keep gift items simple, personal and nostalgic.

Reva’s: Part of our life for nearly 40 years W hen Reva and Doug Meredith opened the first Reva's in 1976, it was just a little holein-the-wall pizza joint in downtown Whangarei. But thanks to Reva's legendary hospitality, and her love of delicious food, live music and local art, Reva's 'Pizza Palour' soon became the meeting place for local musicians, artists, travellers and anyone who appreciated great food, great company and a great time. "See you at Reva's" became the farewell cry as cruising yachts left foreign ports to cross the Southern Ocean. In 1988, the pizza joint became a licensed restaurant in a new premises near the waterfront. Reva’s Pizza Parlour and Restaurant was born. The new premises enabled Reva to utilise her culinary talents and create a vast menu, much of which is still enjoyed today. The jam sessions, art exhibitions and live performances, which included some of New Zealand's top musicians, has continued to woo the crowds. Reva’s on the Waterfront was created in 1995 as an integral part of the new town basin development. The new premises had an open fireplace, generous seating inside and outside, and ‘views to live for’. Despite it’s much larger size, Reva’s has retained the charm and intimacy of the earlier restaurants, including local art on the walls, live music, lively conversation and lots of laughter. Today’s Reva’s is a fully licensed restaurant offering not just Reva’s famous pizza but a gourmet array of Mediterranean and Mexican cuisine with what Reva calls ‘a Californian spirit’. The new purpose built restaurant alongside the marina with its international yachts has retained its famous reputation and Reva's has grown into a New Zealand landmark. Giving your plants a head start — autumn planting by KATHY MORTIMER
Until Sunday 10th May 500 plant species/ varieties in many sizes. Natives, Exotics, Edibles, Hedging, Revegetation & Wetland Plants.
Plus join our new loyalty program and earn an extra 5% in points.
In Northland we are lucky to have warm temperatures and reasonable rainfall and it is possible to get very good growth rates from your plants. Once rain has fallen, autumn is a great time to plant as soil and air temperatures are optimal to get strong plant root systems established before growth slows down over winter. Plants grown in this way, while getting a head start on those planted in winter, will have faster growth next spring, and their stronger roots give them a better chance of surviving any summer drought. Now is the time to do any site preparation and come into the nursery to choose and order your plants. At AlterNatives we grow a wide variety of plants. Native plants for re-vegetation jobs, plants suitable for effluent fields and coastal areas. We grow trees (native and exotic) suitable for hedging, farm shelter belts and erosion control. We also do the ‘pretty’ plants suitable for small town gardens. If you are unsure of what plants would work for you come and talk to our friendly staff, or alternatively we have a design & landscaping service for more assistance.
Clockwise from top: Viburnum opulus 'roseum' AKA snowball tree, Cryptomeria hedge, Tea tree ‘Coral Candy’, Hibiscus 'Ben James’
Not just natives by CANDACE STEVENSON Wondering where you can buy those colourful exotic plants you have been admiring over a coffee in a pricey garden center, but for half of the price if not less? I have good news for you! Alter-Natives not only grow a large range of affordable native plants, we have also been very busy growing a range of exotics, from bright and colourfuls, hedging plants with flare, fast growing shelter/shade trees with a difference, to tasty edibles to feed the family. Our range in plants continues to expand along with our site and staff members. We may not have a cafe´ or shiny nick knacks to admire, but we have a great selection of plants. So come and check out what is available at grower direct prices.

anything from 250ml to a litre of liquid each, every night. This affects your bed in a adverse way, particularly if you are sensitive to asthma and allergies. That’s why a good water proof mattress protector is a necessity. Over time your mattress will no longer support you as it did when it was first purchased. The comfort layers will compact and the bed will feel firmer, or if the bed was a soft model, it can also seem to dip too far, causing a large ridge between you and your partner. This body contouring is a good thing in the beginning, but over time it will get deeper. All beds, that are quilted on top, will contour, but there is a level up to which it is acceptable (no more than 35mm). It is vital that a new mattress is spun 180 degrees every three weeks for the first three months and then once every three months for even wear and longevity. Your bed can deteriorate by as much as 75 per cent over a period of 10 years. The general consensus is that when our beds start getting uncomfortable, we tend to purchase an under lay of sorts, be it wool, foam, latex, memory foam or even a thick polyester one. This might help in the short term, but again, once the mattress has lost its support, the underlay in turn will too and will mirror the state of your bed.

The theory is we need to change our beds every 8 to 10 years. It is always astounding to realise that most people keep their beds for far too long and are unaware of the impact this has on their health and wellbeing, including your demeanour. Over a period of time our beds harbour a multitude of ‘undesirables’. Dust and moisture alone can really affect your body, breathing, sleep and health. It’s always a surprise to most people, but we lose

At BedsRus, we pride ourselves in matching you to your perfect sleep. When looking for a new bed, it is important that a number of questions are asked and answered. Since we only tend to purchase a new bed for ourselves infrequently we need to be mindful of evolving technologies which are always improving. So ‘looking’ at beds, will not help you in your decision making. An experienced sales person should ask you the correct questions in order to match you to your perfect sleep. I would discourage lying on too many beds in store as this will only confuse you. Different spring systems and choices of comfort layers are designed for different needs, ie what position you sleep in, what support you need, whether you are sharing the bed or sleeping alone, how little you want to be disturbed by your partner and the temperature of both you and the bed. But at the end of the day, your level of comfort and support as well as your budget, will determine your choice. You need to make time in order to make the right decision. I would like to add that the most expensive item of furniture in your home should be your bed, after all we spend a third of our lives sleeping.

DOES SIZE MATTER? Unfortunately the size of our bedrooms predetermine the size of our beds, but as the saying goes … big is best. When we were growing up, most of us slept in a single bed which is 91cm wide, but when it comes to sharing our bed with our partners, we tend to chose a queen or in some instances a double. A queen bed is only 153 cm wide, which leaves us approximately 75cm each. (I am not taking the ‘cuddlers’ into this equation.) But 75cm is hardly enough space to turn over without disturbing your partner. Whenever you want to change your sleeping position, you actually wake yourself up in order to do so, as you need to lift yourself and lower yourself to the next position … there is no room to roll, thus broken sleep patterns. In an ideal situation, we should all have a super king 183cm which equates to two singles.
DO I NEED TO REPLACE MY BASE IF I’M REPLACING MY MATTRESS? Sadly, in most cases, the answer is yes. Most older beds, have sprung bases and in the past six-seven years, these have been changed to platform bases, sans springs. I am talking about beds manufactured by Sleepyhead, as this is the only brand we sell at BedsRus. The good news is, that now you won’t need to replace the bases again once you have one. This goes for solid slat bed frames as well. All of our mattresses can be purchased individually and can be used
on solid slat bed frames. If you have a flexi slat bed frame, that is where the slats are flexible, the slats will lose their support over time and will need to be replaced. Be aware that not all bases are made equally. You’ll need to look for one that is constructed well. The Sleepyhead bases are made of high strength timber and are laminated giving even more strength. The other advantage is that bases now come in different colour choices, so we can get rid of the valance issue, although there might be a cost involved in choosing a different colour, but so worth it.
PLEASE REMEMBER ■ Information is always free, so if you have a question or a concern, please do not hesitate to call us on 09 4383550 , seven days a week. I also recommend you have a look at the Sleepyhead website and we promise to do our best in matching you to your perfect sleep. We also offer a 30 Day Comfort Warranty, conditions apply. Till next time — Corgi

Kitchens and bathrooms, where do I start?
I
t’s exciting — you have a project and you are about to start the journey of getting your new kitchen, bathroom or laundry underway. To get maximum benefit from your first visit to any designer, there are some basics that will save time, money and above all else — deliver the very best result in the easiest way possible. Plan, plan and then plan some more! While the designer will do all the hard work — you need to have some idea what you want in your kitchen.
APPLIANCES — WHAT DO YOU WANT?
FLOW AND STORAGE ■ Do you want people to be able to walk through your kitchen or is it a space you want kept free of traffic? ■ Will there be room to sit down and eat incorporated into your design? ■ Will you have a butler’s pantry, a corner pantry or on bench storage? ■ What views do you want from your workspaces? ■ How much storage space do you need?
FORM VERSUS FUNCTION? What is more important to you — how the kitchen looks or how it performs — both are crucial bits of information for your designer.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE? Go through magazines and get online. Go to your designer with a scrapbook of ideas and
inspiration.
this is the very reason you have a designer — they are there to offer suggestions, guide you and ensure the process is painless … in fact it should be fun! Some of your choices include: ■ Flooring ■ Wall coverings and colours ■ Cook top splash back ■ Tiles ■ Window dressings ■ Sink style ■ Cabinets ■ Handles ■ Lighting ■ Bench finish
BUDGET What are you going to invest into your room? Know your budget and share this figure with the designer. Be honest and realistic — don’t forget to factor in all your appliances…this is why the planning above was important! You absolutely must have a dollar figure in mind. If your budget is modest — that’s completely fine; the designer will find products and solutions to suit. If you have grandiose ideas — they also need to know, so you are not disappointed with a modest design concept.
EXPECTATIONS Be realistic about how you will manage your life if you are undertaking a renovation. It really can’t be sugar coated — you are having the heart ripped out of your home. Be prepared for what lies ahead and put some thought into how you and your family will manage this. Consider that you will have complete strangers in your house, children and pets will need to be kept clear of work and egress areas and there will be a lot of noise, inconvenience and dust!
SPACE Take your house plans to the meeting, enabling the designer to see the space in context to your house and garden. Will you incorporate dining into the kitchen space?
CHOICES You are going to need to consider many things, but

The Whangarei Art Museum is calling for submissions from curators, artists, designers, art researchers and interested groups to propose an exhibition showcasing local stories and our creative community. OPEN DAILY 10am - 4pm Whangarei Art Museum The Hub | Dent St.| Town Basin Whangarei | 09 430 4240 Entry through the Hub information Centre

The Whangarei Art Museum welcomes the arts community to share its voice and create an engaging experience for a diverse range of visitors. The project White Cube Black Box introduces the idea of an open blank space of the gallery, often referred to as a ‘white cube’ space, but also the dynamic and performative element of a ‘black box’, a term used in theatre to describe a space of story telling and imagination. This is an opportunity for members of the community to propose an exhibition idea/plan to be displayed at the Whangarei Art Museum over the 2015-16 spring/summer period. What we are looking for:
■ We encourage well developed exhibition proposals with a strong/clear theme or narrative. It can range from the simple and bold to the subtly thought-provoking, however details, clarity and impact will be important. ■ We invite a diverse range of local talent – this can be artists (all mediums welcome) performance artists, designers, aspiring curators or exhibition designers. ■ interested applicants are invited to contact the Whangarei Art Museum for an application pack. ■ Applications close 4.30pm Friday May 15.

Wisdom gained through experience DESCRIBE THE INSIDE MICHELE . . . THE ONE WHO STILL FEELS 18; AND THE OUTSIDE MICHELE . . . THE ONE WHO LETS YOU KNOW YOU’RE NOT 18 . . .
By Colleen Thorpe
N
EW Zealand comedian Michele A’Court has seen her only daughter leave home and go flatting. It has, she says, given her time — something she never had as a parent, to think about being a parent. So she started a list. The list became a hit solo comedy show. And then the list started to grow. That longer list is now a book, Stuff I Forgot to Tell my Daughter. And A’Court is as funny on paper as she is on stage. I asked her a few questions:
WHAT ARE THREE THINGS YOU WOULD TELL A YOUNG MICHELE A’COURT? Don’t worry about which career you should choose — you will get to do all of them eventually; the bubble skirt is always a mistake; and never pluck your eyebrows when you’re drunk.
RELAXED IN HERSELF: Michele A’Court says one of the nicest things about getting older is she doesn’t care so much what people think.
WHAT WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOUR MOTHER TOLD YOU?
fly off and have their own adventures. At which point you get to have your non-parenting adventures — and that’s another wonderful thing that you can show them. I love hearing my daughter’s grown-up stories, and telling her about mine.
That you will feel better if you get out of bed and put on something nice.
WHAT IS THE ONE MOST IMPORTANT THING WE SHOULD TELL OUR KIDS?
AND THE MOST EMBARRASSING THING YOUR DAD DID?
To trust their instincts. We’re born, I think, with a clear voice inside our head telling us what is good and appropriate and safe. Sometimes we overlay that with people-pleasing and politeness so much that the voice gets muffled. We should keep reminding our kids that if it feels wrong or unsafe, it probably is.
My father was, as a younger man, a superb dancer. He had a penchant for dancing on tables if the evening was going well. At one particularly rambunctious dinner party, he managed to actually break the dining table. This was not at our house. I understood as a child that this should have been embarrassing but, just quietly, I was tremendously proud. That’s a good night out, right?
IS IT OKAY TO BE PLEASED TO SEE YOUR KIDS TAKE FLIGHT? Oh, heavens yes. The whole point of building a nest and feeding them and telling them stories is so that one day they’ll
For kids ...
MOST WOMEN LOVE THEIR KITCHEN, THEIR STUDY, THEIR GARDEN . . . YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE IS YOUR LAUNDRY! WHY? It’s a great thinking place. I love clothes and fabric — my parents had a clothing manufacturing business when I was growing up — and that process of making things fresh and new again is tremendously satisfying for me. Most of what I do happens inside my head so getting my hands
The 18-year-old on the inside is all stilettos and margaritas, still believing that anything is possible and that there’s plenty of time to do it all in. She’s the one who risks failure and makes the unconventional choices and quite often says, “Bugger it, might as well, sounds like fun!” I like her a lot. But I am also growing to like the middle-aged Michele who knows she’s not 18 — not the aching shoulder or the disappearing eyebrows or the worry that you’re running out of time — but the one who is so settled in herself she’s not bothered at all by what other people think. More and more I find her saying, “Bugger it, might as well, sounds like fun!” It works best when the inner 18 year old and the crone hold hands and set off on adventures together.
HOW IMPORTANT ARE GIRLFRIENDS? Stuff I Forgot to Tell my Daughter by Michele A’Court, Harper Collins, $34.99
into soapy water and scrubbing at stains and folding things neatly is rewarding in a visual and tactile way. I also love the idea that this is what mothers have done for thousands of years all over the world in all kinds of cultures. There’s something nurturing about taking care of the things we live in and sleep in and wash ourselves with — all the fabrics that touch our skin. I like feeling part of that continuum. So I’ve made my laundry a nice place to be — it’s painted a ridiculous shade of orange and I’ve hung things on the walls from places I’ve visited. Sometimes I’ll have a brilliant idea there. Sometimes there are no thoughts at all.
Vitally important. We need to have moments in our lives when we don’t feel “other” and pretty often we feel that sense of belonging when we’re in the company of women like us. Men communicate shoulder to shoulder — watching sport, working alongside, standing in a river in their waders. Women, we knit in a circle and talk face to face. No matter how else we construct our lives and families, we’ve got to have some ladytime.
TELL US THREE THINGS ABOUT YOURSELF THAT WILL SURPRISE. I have a hole in my ear drum — I’ve been lip-reading since I was 11; my first TV appearance was in 1967. My mother, brother and I appeared in a TV commercial for the Trustee Savings Bank; during a visit to East Timor to entertain NZ peacekeepers in 2001, we discovered I am a pretty good shot with a pistol.

The Pirates and the Nightmaker by James Norcliffe, Longacre Child, $19.99 ....................................... This is quite slow to start off and doesn’t really pick up the pace as the story goes on. In this book he brings the Loblolly boy back in, in my opinion that is not a respectable name for a character and at least give them a proper name. I was unable to finish this book as it is not the slightest bit gripping and takes too long to develop the smallest of details as it is not written the best with not as many large details as needed. For me the story line was one thing that at least tried to make it an all right book but everything else let it down. In this book the Loblolly boy is stranded in a jolly boat with a handful of hungry men and to save him Mr Wicker turns him into a creature of the night, he is then drawn to an astrolabe in which Mr Wicker seeks to find the magical powers it beholds and why Mr Wicker must never get it. — Cameron Draper, Y9

BMW 218i ACTIVE TOURER
Family friendly and can handle a challenge By ROSS KIDDIE
NEED TO KNOW
I
’ve been fortunate enough to find myself at some interesting destinations as manufacturers eke out places for launch events. One of the most memorable was when BMW New Zealand recently launched their first front-wheel-drive car (Mini aside), the 2-Series Active Tourer. It took place in Tasmania and I was paired with a fellow motoring writer whom I always look forward to spending time with. My colleague is from the Waikato and we have become good friends, sharing many a memorable drive programme over the years, we have similar interests – career, lifestyle and music. As a consequence, we often enter into deep conversations. On the odd occasion that has been our downfall, we have known to get lost on drive programmes. On the BMW event that happened, although I’m quick to point out that as navigator I was paying attention to the instructions, it was just that I pre-empted a turnoff which took us 50km in the wrong direction before we realised the mistake. It was a bit of a tight schedule and I knew that not only would we be holding up the rest of the drive group, but it would jeopardise our check-in time for the flights home, so it was a matter of travelling a bit quicker than normal to make up time on the tight and twisty roads of rural Launceston. As good fortune would have it, the sat nav system suggested a bit of a short-cut so we caught up with the rest of the drive group without too much of a delay, but what it served to prove was how capable the Active Tourer is on roads that were a bit of a handling challenge. The 2-Series Active Tourer is described by BMW as an urban mobility concept, I’d describe it as an SUV with a difference.

Price: BMW 218i Active Tourer, $51,900 Dimensions: Length,4342mm; width, 1800mm; height, 1586mm Configuration: Three-cylinder transverse, front-wheel-drive, 1499cc, 100kW, 220Nm, six-speed automatic Performance: 0-100km/h, 9.2sec For More Information contact: Jerry Clayton BMW 445 Lake Road Takapuna AUCKLAND Ph: 09 488 2000 Email: bmwsales@jcbmw.co.nz www.jcbmw.co.nz There’s no doubt that it is a family friendly wagon, the rear seating area is spacious along with a useful load carrying area. Up front the Active Tourer comes to New Zealand with the choice of two engines, both turbocharged. Here we have the option of a 2-litre diesel and a three-cylinder petrol engine which displaces just 1499cc. If the latter’s capacity looks familiar it is very similar to that which powers the Mini Cooper, although BMW are quick to point out there are differences. Nevertheless, it was that engine which was fitted to the test car, and if you are thinking an engine of that configuration and size wouldn’t be adequate for the Active Tourer’s role you’d be very much mistaken. BMW rate the wee threepotter at 100kW with 200Nm of torque available all of the way from 1250rpm to 4300rpm. It is a real honey in terms of honesty and performance. It is also rated with rather amazing fuel usage figures, such as a 5.1l/100km (55mpg) combined cycle rating. Idle stop-start goes some way to achieving those results, along with a drive selectable eco pro mode which initiates engine management protocols biased towards economy. My test
average listed around 6.8l/100km (42mpg) with 4.4l/100km (65mpg) available instantaneously on a 100km/h cruise, the engine very relaxed ticking over at just 2100rpm at that speed thanks to a tall top gear. The gearbox is a traditional six-speed automatic, and the relationship between the engine and gearbox is fluid with clean, smooth shifts and shift protocols which work well the mid-range strength of the engine and the turbocharging boost. I’ve spent a lot of time in three-cylinder cars over the years, one of my work commute cars had a three-potter and I grew to like its honesty immensely. There’s no mistaking the Active Tourer in this form has just three cylinders, there are characteristic harmonics which resonate on the odd occasion, but that need not be a consideration. If you are intent on driving a car without wanting to know the mechanics or engineering aspects, you would think it had nothing out of the ordinary engineering-wise. The Active Tourer in this form is also quite powerful, 100kW is nothing to be sneezed at, and if you consider the area
where maximum punch is developed, there is adequate acceleration, speed is ushered in well within the realms of acceptability. A standstill to 100km/h time of 9.2sec can be expected along with a 7sec time to make 120km/h from 80km/h. As I mentioned, the Active Tourer is also a useful handler, it doesn’t quite have the dynamism and natural handling characteristics of rear-drive BMWs but it does equip itself well with strong front-end turnin and controlled body balance. Providing the grip are 225/45 x 18in fuel saving Good Year tyres, they are quiet and composed when treated aggressively. The fully independent suspension is only moderately firmed so on-board comfort is at a premium, uneven surfaces mid-corner don’t upset the suspension, the Tasmanian experience served to prove how composed the Active Tourer is under handling pressure. Quick direction changes won’t unsettle the chassis, while stability and accuracy have been engineered into the car. And you would expect that from a company which produces so many fine handling automobiles. Inside, the Active Tourer shares much of the componentry
you would find in much of the BMW range. However, it’s true to say the Active Tourer is downspecced a little for our market, at $51,900 and $62,900 (diesel) it is priced so that families can view it as an affordable purchase. But, in true BMW fashion, there are loads of options which can be loaded into the car if finances allow. The test car was sat nav equipped with all on-screen functions manipulated by a centre console i-Drive controller. The Active Tourer also comes with all of the passive and active safety kit characteristics of the European standard of manufacture. While the Active Tourer is a major departure for BMW in terms of chassis construction, the cabin structure epitomises the desire by BMW to reach all markets. SUV sales worldwide are still healthy, and BMW have several varying styles, four-wheel-drive, rear and front-wheel-drives vehicles to choose from. The Active Tourer is an affordable way for the family to get into the BMW range and it will satisfy with its functionality, frugal usage costs, satisfying driving feel and its capability when presented with a challenge.

Finding my calm ... Wife, mother, journalist ... PHILIPPA MANNAGH reveals the highs and lows, and the challenges in life ...
I
smell like Yoga. I left the house one night recently, knowing that I need this. Unsure of what exactly "this" was, I signed up to a beginners Yoga class and entered the Yoga Circle doors on a wintry night with an open mind and in want of rest, peace and still. The room was warm. Other first timers were easing into the room’s grand atmosphere and it felt very safe. I wasn't threatened. Maybe I thought I would be? This was an area in life I had closed myself off to in the past. I didn't understand yoga or think that I may need it. Half an hour in, I had learnt how to breathe ... properly. I gained clarity into who I want to be, where I want to end up and how much I need to slow down. I learnt how to thank my
body for everything it does. How I need to treat and talk to myself better. At the end of the night, I relaxed into a state I never had before. Not an airy-fairy state. Not a mind emptying state that makes way for other elements to come in but to just BE with where I was at, how my body felt and how the ground was supporting my being, at that moment. Present. Thankful. Relaxed. Connected. My chosen "sankalpa", or short positive statement to develop is: "I am relaxed. I have time." This thought that will take me through the sessions has come into play numerous times everyday since and has changed the way I live my life. No longer in panic mode. Case in point, yesterday — a mother of all days where everything that could go wrong did. Right up until dinner time (when I started to crack) I rose to the challenges, smiled in the face
of defeat and laughed when I would normally be a crying, rocking mess. Something had changed. Yes, I smell like Yoga. The oil which was softly spread across my forehead at the end of class, while covered in a cosy blanket and a beanbag across my eyes. The scent triggers what I personally went through and it is this scent that is also prompting me to switch of technology earlier each night and rest my body and mind. This is every bit of good. (Next time I will stay for the recommended hot tea to wake up a bit, after realising my lights were still on dim half way home!) DIANNE HARRIS is a budget advisor for the Anglican Care Centre
Many modern homes are described as ‘low maintenance’ but this does not mean ‘no maintenance’ To be honest, there is no such thing as a maintenance-free home. Maintenance is work necessary to keep your home in a good state of repair and includes everything from a regular clean to repairs and replacements. It can be as small as changing a washer on a leaky tap to repainting the whole house, replacing the roof to basic electrical repairs. We have just been through the process of having our hot water cylinder needing a new element — total account received from the electrician just under $300. Household items don’t give us any warning they just stop. Having a house maintenance account set up means that the funds are available to pay the bill, rather than trying to tweak the regular budget when the repairs occur. From research that I have done it is suggested that you should aim, as a bare minimum, to allow $1500 per year or another suggestion 1 per cent of your home’s value per year for repairs and maintenance. Worth considering isn’t it. Your most important asset needs to be protected and valued. By starting to systematically put money aside each week for repair and maintenance costs, you will find they will cause you less of a
surprise as time goes on.
