27 Be in to win

People come to see me for assistance in their lives for a multitude of reasons. Together, we look at anything that is creating disharmony. We use a questioning technique — one of the key tools of Access Consciousness to hone into undiscovered levels of awareness; to recover the information that was always there, buried somewhere un-accessed for some time! I have become increasingly aware that most of the time issues are created as a result of people not truly being themselves. We become so conditioned by the ‘voices’ of this world — some call it monkey mind, others call it ego, identity is another definition for it. I refer to it as ‘conditioning’ and you may have your own reference point so go with whatever that is for you. So, how do we know when we are not being ourselves? We go down the creek with no paddle, we cut ourselves off at the knees to ‘fit’ into someone else’s life, we become resentful when we feel our ‘requirements’ are not being met and so on while ‘giving’ everyone else everything they need, desire and require. In the 10 or so years in this work, 90 per cent of the time, when I ask the question: “are you being you, or someone else?” the response is “I don’t know how to be me”. We are not taught this in school. Where do we go in the great disappearing act we have perfected so well? Good question! Please ask yourself, anytime you feel yourself disappearing, or anytime you feel less than. Choosing for you, does not equal choosing against others and as my friend Dain Heer says: “Be You & Change Your World”. I’ll be in Northland for a short time from late July, please contact me if you would like to book an appointment!

oming up to morning tea time in Kaitaia the Duck ‘N Lunch Bar will be humming — not because it’s the edgy cafe´ of choice for morning coffee, but because of its pies. It is, in fact, a very little lunch bar on the edge of Kaitaia’s industrial area and it has no pretentions to trendy de´cor. You can’t even sit down there. But owners Karyn Tattersall and Hilda Friar make arguably the best pies in the Far North and maybe even the entire country, and they’re planning to put that to the test by entering the Bakels New Zealand Supreme Pie Awards being judged in just a couple of weeks. They’ve owned the lunch bar for two years now, having ‘stumbled into it’ on returning to their home town of Kaitaia after seven years in Australia. “Neither of us could find jobs when we got back but we wanted to stay in Kaitaia because we’re from here, and we’re really just country girls,” says Hilda. “So basically, we bought our employment.” Hilda had been in the hospitality industry since she was 19, having completed a diploma in hospitality management in Whangarei and worked in various roles around the north including two years at Kauri Cliffs. She pursued similar work in Australia, while Karyn involved herself in a variety of jobs including forklift driving, traffic control and security. “I never thought when we came back that I’d end up with a lunch bar,” she laughs. Having said that, she loves it. Her passion for food came originally from her grandmother, who was a great cook, and she still has her grandmother’s recipe book,

the PIES have it ... which is all handwritten. When she and Hilda took over the lunch bar they decided that because it was so small they would have to specialise, so the pies now represent a third of their output. They also make hamburgers, sausage rolls, sandwiches and possibly the biggest custard squares on record. “Everything here is pretty man-sized,” they say. They source their ingredients locally, and the aim is to make food just as their grandmothers

would have done. Their steak pies are very popular and get cleaned out very quickly, and the kaimoana pie is another spectacular success. Unfortunately the pie contest no longer has a seafood category, so the Duck ‘N Lunch Bar is entering the bacon and egg, mince and cheese, steak and cheese and gourmet categories. Karyn will make the pies for the competition exactly as she always does — “why change something that’s already good?”. This year the organisers are

forecasting 6000 pie entries from 550 bakeries around the country, and top New Zealand chef and food columnist Martin Bosley is joining the judging team. He describes the pie as “the most egalitarian of dishes”, and says it’s unsurprising Kiwis have an enduring love affair with it. “For a brief moment in time, it doesn’t matter who you are or what you do, nothing else matters when you have a decent pie.” The baker of the supreme pie

will take away the Supreme Pie Maker trophy and $7500 cash, while Gold award winners receive $1000 cash. Judging day is Thursday July 16, and the winners will be announced at a gala dinner on July 21. Whether they win or not, it’ll be business as usual at the Duck ’N Lunch Bar for Hilda and Karyn. But they do have an exciting plan for the future. “We’re going to sell the lunch bar and go mobile with our food around Kaitaia and further north.”

Life change and inspiration to others by PHILIPPA MANNAGH

U

nlike most teenagers her age, Renata Rousey was hitchhiking to school, as opposed to away from it, all the way from Opononi to Kaikohe. Home life was tough, but she was determined to prove those who doubted her wrong. “I wanted to be Head Girl to make my family proud, that was my motivation in my last years of school. Bullying was a huge factor in not finishing school.” When a Mormon friend from school asked his mum to take her in so she could get to school easier, it turned her life around and offered Renata the lucky break that she deserved. "He even used his some of his holiday money to buy me a school bag, not many people know that.” Her physical education teacher and her friend, both helped give her the loving support she needed to succeed. “I didn't end up finishing school but I sure came away with a few life lessons added to the bank along with a sense of gratitude to anyone that was to ever help me in anything I did.” Renata soon found physical support in boxing when her achilles tendon was ruptured after a game of touch. She presumed punching a bag in a moon boot would be easy exercise. "It was a full body work out and different to most sport, very different to being involved in a team environment. You could only rely on yourself to keep pushing." She was asked to take part in a boxing fight in Kerikeri and realised how much more the sport entailed, coming in at a draw and realising she had a long way to go. "The weight was a huge thing as well as the nutrition side, a huge factor!" Later, when a job vacancy arose at a Military Prep School further north, she knew this was her chance to give back to other kids who may be in the same situation she had been. Within her year’s contract, a chance came up for a boxing fight. “It was a huge eye-opener and each time I would typically find myself telling my students that

there is no excuse to accept ‘what is’.” “When asked by my students if I would fight one of the local females, the only answer was yes. I figured, I have nothing to loose and I'm only doing what I ask of my students, seems fair. I won that fight.” Soon, with the help of crossfit training, Renata’s second fight saw her beat an overall champ with only three weeks to prepare. Through The Lions Den in Whangarei, she worked towards her first MMA fight. Fitness, health and utmost respect for each other were the values

surrounding this sport and she new it was time to get serious Now with two girls, step children aged 16 and 19, two new businesses, training commitments and a new job as a Development Manager at Fitness Plus, it was her time and there were zero excuses. Leaving home in the early hours of the morning and arriving home at 8 each night she says the last thing she felt like was cooking tea. Old habits died away slowly, like thinking she deserved a Big Mac on the way home. Renata’s third fight and first MMA fight at Princess of Pain saw her loose on a technicality. "I lost a lot of weight, 27kg in 6 months. I’m very happy with my performance and my support crew was amazing!" One memory she wishes to

forget in the lead up to a big fight however, was the intense weight drop experience involving weight loss through sweat release. “It took a while to recover. I lost 7kg the day before my fight, no food or water. I would not have done it without my team there.” Renata’s tips to health include making small steps including eating breakfast. She cut out sugar as much as she could, then bread and focused on smaller dinners. “It doesn’t have to be flash, it is a slow journey,” she says. "My support team was massive, I will always be grateful to everyone that pushed me, even the ones that didn’t want me to succeed." “The journey still continues, my inspiration comes from everyone. I just hope I can give the same in return.”

Positive look on life’s harsh lessons T

he pain and suffering from physical, mental and/or emotional abuse can often lead people into a downward spiral of despair and depression. All too often they turn to either drugs, alcohol or violence to manage their stress, but Ren Haskell discovered a different way of coping. Sitting opposite her, it’s hard to believe this petite woman has such a big heart after enduring so much turmoil; but as she says herself, ‘‘I can’t undo what’s happened, but I can, and did choose not to let it define me’’. Her sensitive, compassionate nature and fierce sense of justice underpin the moral courage she’s shown in starting ‘B-Free’ – a business to empower individuals with the ability to manage traumatic and stressful events so they feel in control and able to stay true to themselves. ‘‘I have nothing to loose and everything to gain from using my own experiences, the professional qualifications I’ve gained and the drawer full of t-shirts I’ve acquired to make a positive difference to other peoples lives.’’ Ren has fond memories of her early childhood with her brothers and sisters being supported by loving parents, but at the age of 8 her world turned upside down when her father moved to

Australia to get treatment for cancer. The stress of coping with six children started to take its toll on her mother’s mental health. She became dependent on prozac for her depression and was oblivious to the advances her new partner was making on her daughter. At 13 Ren gave evidence against him resulting in him going to jail and her being sent to a foster home where she remained for five years without any contact from her family. Ren shared two pivotal moments that gave her a different outlook. ‘‘I clearly remember the day I found a way to shift the feeling of being alone and abandoned by crushing herbs and sniffing them. I noticed different smells would evoke good memories and lift my spirit, and although I couldn’t get out of the situation, I could control my response. I instinctively knew I could help myself and the people around me. I remember cradling the baby of a P addict, singing Paul Simon’s ‘She loves me like a rock’ with tears pouring down my face as she peacefully transitioned to another world.’’ Over the coming years she endured more than her share of traumatic events. At 16 she spent four hours in a straight jacket answering questions. Witnessed rape, suicide, violence and death. Miscarried a stillborn child only months before she had to fly to Australia to identify her father’s body, then lost her grandfather, aunty and best friend – all within 18 months of

each other. Ren immersed herself in learning about the body and an array of natural therapies gaining qualifications in Therapeutic Massage, Physiology, Pathology, Anatomy, Acupressure, Polarity, Reflexology, Aromatherapy, First Aid and Neuromuscular Therapy. Along the way she discovered a connection with the spirit world, enabling her to reassure the living with messages from departed love ones. Just six months ago she qualified as an Independent Marriage and Civil Union Celebrant. ‘‘I feel my life has come full circle. I’ve helped myself and I can now help others with my services and products to manage and celebrate the ups and

downs of life. It might sound ‘out the box’ to some, but I’ve captured the intangible into a tangible toolkit that comes in a box so people have a resource to help themselves 24/7. I have a clinic for one-on-one consultations and workshops as well as the mobile Celebrant services to honour the birth, marriage and death stages of life.’’ It was a humbling experience to spend time with such a genuine, positive woman. Her enthusiasm for life contagious. Her products simple, effective and affordable. Go and see her today at her Coping and Wellness Expo in Rust Avenue between 8am and 8pm. She’s a natural antidote to help you see the value of your own life.

I couldn’t believe my eyes! M

Y EYES have been bugging me for ages so I had an eye check recently and got the bad news: I need glasses and even if I start wearing them a little bit now, eventually I’ll need them all the time, the optometrist said. He gave me a lecture about the dangers of fatty food and the impact it has on eye health. He asked if I had a family history of glaucoma, which I do, saying I would be wise to limit my fat intake if I wanted to retain my vision long-term. Interesting but demoralising stuff for someone prone to bouts of bingeing on chocolate and fries. Not only was I left worrying about my diet, but also depressed about being told that my blurry eyesight is the beginning of a steady decline from age. Rightly or wrongly, I decided to go elsewhere to buy my frames, wanting to give my money to someone willing to stroke my ego and tell me, at age 40 and a bit, my future is still bright. I enlisted my sister’s help, being an indecisive Gemini, I wanted her honest opinion. Long story short, I’m still without glasses but after trying on a fab array I’ve got through “phase one”. The assistant wants me in round frames, my sister wants me in square, and I’m somewhere in the middle, trying to avoid giving my game away and looking like a female Clark Kent.

Wear the colour that’s you Colour is beautiful. It is everywhere. We all have colours that complement us. Wearing colour, the right colour for ourselves can help to make our eyes sparkle, our hair shine and our complexion look healthy. Wearing the colours that suit us can help add to our confidence, helps us to express our feelings and shares with the world something about how we like to dress, and our personality. Anne Clothier the owner of Red Ruby Fashion Boutique trained in Colour Analysis. This is a process of using draping fabrics that finds an individual’s colour group that will complement you most. It can take up to two hours in an appointment at the Red Ruby store to learn the best colours for each client. You learn what colours are right for you and come away with a great colour swatch set and a book detailing what you have learned.

fashion Precious ‘one-offs’ on winter sale rack

Aren’t you lucky! Here we are in the middle of June with the first taste of winter finally upon us and the world of clothing retail is on Sale. A decision cranked by the big guns, the ‘gob stoppers’ of chain store retail that has nothing to do with the weather. For the small fry independent retailers, the smarties, who are bracing themselves for three miserably cold months ahead, it’s an inevitable decision that just doesn’t make sense. In retail, winter is the ‘make or break’ season and when its mild and balmy like this year it’s nothing but win, win for the consumer. It’s like all your late night Thursdays have come at once. Shops bulging with discounted merchandise give you an extended, not so rare, shopping experience. So let’s make the most of it and just indulge: On offer is a glorious ‘pick and mix’ of styles, sizes and colours. From independent retailers, precious little ‘one offs’ lie in wait for the perfect fit, tantalising those who seek individuality and a point of difference. One offs like the superb lucky-last Sabatini merino and leather revere collared coat, or the exquisite Moss & Spy silver and black ‘mother of’ with fitted bodice and full skirt, the Bridge & Lord merino and cashmere oversized V neck jumper in blended natural tones or that ‘only one left’ 2014, little Joseph Ribkoff size 8 number. Yet for the big gun buyers, the ‘all day sucker’ chain store consumer, it’s just another day bargain hunting, as they sort through the newest container of ‘prices slashed even more’ stock. For them it’s not about winter, or quality or individuality – it’s a quick fix, blend in the crowd decision – along with their sister, aunty, neighbour, work mate and maybe even their great grandmother. They just may need to check out though, who is wearing what when. Karen Matich, Polwarth Design

Unveiling Caci’s treatments

FINDING YOUR BEAUTY with SARAHLEE COBB

No jargon or long words. Just the facts.

Permission to feel beautiful

T

here are a lot of complicated words out there when it comes to skin treatments, but what do they all really mean? VPL? Photo Rejuvenation? Fractional CO2? Collagen Induction? …it’s a lot to take in. If you’ve ever wondered what these actually mean, we’re clearing the air, and make it easy for your understand. No jargon or long words, just the facts.

VPL Photo Rejuvenation

Variable Pulse Light (VPL) Photo Rejuvenation is a treatment which safely pulses high energy light through the skin surface, targeting a range of skin concerns from sun damage (age, sun spots and pigmentation), broken capillaries to uneven skin tone and texture. This treatment can be used on the face, neck and back of hands.

Fractional C02 laser

Let’s break it down: Fractional, means we are only treating very small areas, approx. a 1cm square at a time. CO2, is attracted to water which is found in the deepest layer of the skin (basal layer). Laser, is the heat that is used to penetrate the skin in very fine holes, and damage the cells below. This controlled damage is used to train the cells in the basal layer to grow back stronger, firmer, and faster. This is our most advanced skin treatment. It’s designed to treat the signs of damaged skin by correcting skin tone, firmness and texture while reducing the appearance of

fine lines and wrinkles.

Collagen Induction (dermal rolling)

Collagen Induction (often referred to as dermal rolling) is a treatment we use to improve skin texture, scarring, plus lines and wrinkles. This skin treatment uses a dermal roller - a surgical instrument with nearly 200 extremely fine micro-needles

Caci Whangarei, 110 Bank St

of medical grade stainless steel. These fine needles cause tiny micro-wounds within the lower layer of the skin and stimulate collagen production. Over a course of treatments, collagen fibres strengthen and elasticity is increased, resulting in a stronger, firmer layer of skin.

Glycolic

A glycolic is a fruit enzyme peel we often add to facials or

microdermabrasion. A Glycolic helps exfoliate away dead skin cells to reveal fresh, healthier skin below.

When was that last time you told yourself yes, I should? With so many options to choose from and so many restrictions to fit what we think others expect of us, it’s easy to get confused over what we want. We end up going through a lengthy inner monologue; should I, shouldn’t I, I like this part but I don’t like here or here? This self-talk happens over everything but especially around clothes and our self image. So when was the last time you focused on your best feature and said to yourself yes, I should; I’m worth it and I deserve it? Deciding what you want and then giving yourself permission to have it are the first steps towards getting what you want. Please don’t go through the same debate inside your head every time. Trust me you are worth it, the real question you should be asking yourself is ‘is it worthy of me?’ Will it make my life better; will it make me more confident and feel beautiful? If you are going to a function, dress up to make yourself confident. If there is a dress code (stated or unstated), know that it is a minimum rather than a maximum of the style of outfit you should choose. What happened to make us more worried about over-dressing than underdressing? Because the more care you take towards yourself, the more care others will take towards you. Every woman who comes into my portrait studio is searching for confidence, wanting me to find her version of beautiful. I know that they are beautiful already; they just have to believe it. The most important thing I can do is to give them permission to feel unashamedly beautiful, gorgeous and confident, because I know when someone else says you can, you will. I want every woman and girl to do this for themselves, and for those they love. We need to point out the positives in people rather than repeat the negatives they see. If you know they are sensitive about a part of their bodies, pre-empt any comments by pointing out something you genuinely see as a positive, rather than saying they shouldn’t self-criticise. I discuss a lot about feeling beautiful, looking beautiful and creating your own happiness. It is such an integral part of our emotional selves, because to be confident is to be seen as beautiful or handsome. Inwardly we want confidence because it means that we believe in our abilities, and ourselves. Outwardly, confidence means we are worth affection and responsibility. The more you give yourself permission to show off your beauty, the more permission you give others to tell you, ‘you are beautiful’.

This machine, [the Active CRYSTAL-512] is much more than simply a handy device in which to permanently reduce your unwanted hair… It also treats new scars, broken capillaries, pigmentation, couperose, rosacea, acne scarring and can rejuvenate

the skin, plumping fine lines and wrinkles and boosting collagen production!! How you say? The unwanted hair is removed by intense pulse light (IPL) targeting the melanin in the hair follicle. High intensity light passes into the follicle and eventually destroys it. As there are different phases of active hair follicles (active means alive and growing) at any one time this means we need to have multiple treatments, usually 6-8 but every individual is different. For skin rejuvenation the light targets the chromophores, or the blood, melanin and P.acne bacteria in the skin, and rejuvenation takes place. The light reaches 70 degrees heat and that in turn stimulates the collagen in the skin to reproduce, softening fine lines and plumping the skin. Now there are some details to bear in mind before you book our wonderful winter offer, this amazing machine will treat the face and body and I myself have had incredible results on my legs, bikini and under arms, the darker the hair the better results you will have but it won’t work on grey hair, and will be less effective on red hair. It also works at its best on fairer skin tones, the fairer your skin the better results but we have seen fantastic results on tanned and olive skin tones you may just need a few more treatments. This includes having a suntan; this is why wintertime is by far the best time to get your treatments done! So if you have unwanted hair or skin conditions you’ve wanted to treat but IPL has either not been accessible or you have tried it before with not such a great outcome, now is the time to take advantage of our fantastic offer!

Step 3: For breakouts or dark spots, dab concealer and use a stippling motion to blend. Set it by applying a translucent powder under eyes and to your T-zone.

Step 5: Swipe a peach shadow across lids, up to the crease. Use a blending brush to work purple eyeshadow into the outer half of the crease and blend down to the outer corners. Then apply dark brown shadow at outer corners for definition.

Step 1: Prep skin with moisturiser or primer. Apply a light foundation or BB cream in circular motions using your brush for airbrushed effect. Step 2: Apply concealer under the eyes, beginning at the inner corners and extending to the outer corners, and along nose sides. Blend out concealer to create a brightened under-eye area.

Step 4: Apply bronzer, for warmth, along cheek hollows, hairline and jawline. Add pink blush to cheeks. Finish by adding highlight powder to high points of cheekbones.

Step 6: Finish with mascara on top and bottom lids and a sheer pink gloss on lips. “Complement your new makeup look with soft, effortlessly chic hair,” says hairstylist Symonds, who styles beauties such as Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting. The

Generation tech gets pain in neck by HENRY AUSTIN Sedentary lifestyles and repeatedly looking down at mobile phones have led to a huge rise in the number of young people experiencing back and neck pain, researchers say. Forty-five per cent of people aged 16 to 24 surveyed by the British Chiropractic Association say they have pain, compared with 28 per cent of those surveyed a year ago. “When people use laptops or mobile phones in bed they tend to forget their posture, hunch over the screen and leave their spine unsupported, which can damage posture and cause back or neck pain,” said chiropractor Tim Hutchful. He added that he was “concerned that the number of patients under the age of 30 coming through our doors is increasing”. His colleague, fellow British Chiropractic Association chiropractor Rishi Loatey said: “The only sort of neck pain we used to see with that age group was people who had been in car accidents. “But now the vast majority of neck pains are people from secondary school upwards.” On an average day the BCA found that Britons spent two hours sitting and looking at mobile technology, four hours looking at a laptop or desktop computer and three hours watching TV. Across all age groups, the BCA survey found that 86 per cent of the 2000 people questioned said back and neck pain was a problem. “Our modern lifestyle is forcing us to

stay seated,” Hutchful says. “Sitting causes up to twice as much pressure on discs on the spine as standing.” The BCA recommends that people sit with their bottom against the back of the seat, with their shoulder blades touching the chair back. Those working with screens should ensure their eyebrows are level with the top and their chairs are tilted slightly forward. Standing up or changing position every 20 minutes also helps.

Garlic is a natural fungal treatment Herbalist LES helps address health issues the natural way I have a very stubborn fungal toe nail infection on my big toe which is very unsightly. I’ve tried Canesten cream from my doctor but it hasn’t made any difference. Can you give me any advice on how to treat it naturally? I’m generally in good health but can’t seem to get rid of this. — James Nail fungus is a common condition that begins as a white or yellow spot under the tip of your fingernail or toenail. As the fungal infection goes deeper, nail fungus may cause your nail to discolour, thicken and crumble at the edge. It can affect several nails but usually not all of them. The condition is called onychomycosis and when the fungus infects the areas between your toes and the skin of your feet, it's called athlete's foot. Garlic is a natural anti-fungal and has been traditionally used to treat fungal infections. Sometimes it is the only effective treatment for fungus trapped in hard to reach areas, such as under the nail bed. It’s a bit messy to use but can be very effective. Peel garlic gloves and crush with a flat surface of large knife, or use a garlic press. Apply crushed garlic to the affected region. To keep the crushed garlic in place, wrap your affected toe

with a gauze bandage and tape it up. Wear the garlic for several hours – while you’re sitting at home in the evening is best ! Remove bandages and clean your feet. Bathing the feet in 50/50 mixture of apple cider vinegar and warm water will serve the dual purpose of removing the garlic odour and hastening the healing process as ACV is another home remedy for fungal conditions. After bathing your feet, dry thoroughly and apply Themba herbal skin cream. Rub into all the affected areas working it well into the nail bed as much as possible. Continue this treatment for two weeks. You can also take a garlic supplement – my regular readers will know that I like Allicin Max available from www.nzhealthstore.co.nz. Take the recommended daily dose. Pay special attention to foot hygiene. If you shower in public places such as swimming pools, wear jandals, or if you practice yoga, bring your own mat to class. This will help you to avoid either aggravating the fungus or spreading it to others. Dry your feet thoroughly after showering or swimming. Avoid wearing socks which fit too tightly as this can trap bacteria. If you perspire heavily in your feet, try changing socks more frequently. Themba herbal skin cream available from Hardys, Kerikeri and Greenworld, Kaikohe or from www.littleherbalcompany.co.nz Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar available from all good health stores and also on the shelf at New World. ■ If you have a question for Les please email her: herbalist@littleherbalcompany.co.nz

Glaucoma: the silent disease I

magine not being able to drive, work, play sport, see your family, watch television, read or enjoy any activities that involve your sight. That’s the future more New Zealanders will face if knowledge about glaucoma, the leading cause of preventable blindness, drops ... or stops. About 91,000 New Zealanders over the age of 40 have glaucoma and more than half don’t know they have it. Glaucoma is a silent disease; you can be legally blind before you notice the symptoms. Early detection of glaucoma is vital when it comes to preventing blindness. That means having an eye examination for glaucoma every five years from the age of 45 and every three years from the age of 60. However, at any age, if you notice changes in your eyesight, then you should have your eyes examined. The good news is that 98% of those who comply with their prescribed treatment for glaucoma will not go blind. That could mean putting in eye drops every day for the rest of their lives – a simple thing to do to save previous sight.

glaucoma. ■ A family history of glaucoma means you are at much greater risk of developing glaucoma.

Types of Glaucoma:

What is Glaucoma? Glaucoma is the name given to a group of eye diseases where the Optic nerve at the back of the eye is slowly destroyed. In most people the damage is due to increased pressure inside the eye – a result of blockage of the circulation of aqueous (fluid), or its drainage. In others, the damage may be caused by poor blood supply to the vital optic nerve fibres, a weakness in the structure of the nerve, and/or a problem in the health of the nerve fibres themselves. Today, diagnosis is based on just two features: visible damage to the optic nerve, which leads from the retina at the back of the eye to the brain, and loss of peripheral vision, which can be measured by a simple test in an eye doctor’s office.

Basic facts about glaucoma: ■ There are different types of glaucoma, but they all involve

damage to the optic nerve, which is at the back of the eye. ■ Glaucoma is not curable. ■ If you have glaucoma it must be monitored for the rest of your life. Current treatments for glaucoma all aim to lower eye pressure. Medication in eye drops can have side effects on other parts of your body. Tell your eye specialist. ■ People of all ages can get

Open-angle Glaucoma is the most common form of glaucoma and happens when the eye’s drainage canals resist the outflow of fluid. This results in the pressure in the eye increasing because the fluid cannot drain out of the eye. Every eye has a different pressure it can tolerate. Glaucoma occurs when the pressure rises beyond a critical level for that person. Most people have no symptoms and no early warning signs. Normal Pressure Glaucoma is when the optic nerve is damaged even though eye pressure is not particularly high. It is not yet understood why some people suffer optic nerve damage despite having intraocular pressures in the “normal” range. It is thought these people have optic nerves that are vulnerable at lower pressures Angle Closure Glaucoma occurs if the path of fluid to the angle becomes blocked. Fluid

will continue to be produced at a normal rate but will not be adequately drained, allowing the pressure in the eye to build up to a harmful level. The angle may not be allowing sufficient outflow for a variety of reasons. If a person is born with a narrow angle, it will become even narrower with age. This most commonly presents as sudden onset of pain, nausea and possibly vomiting. The vision usually blurs and the pupil can become slightly bigger. However, there is also a silent form of angle closure glaucoma. Traumatic glaucoma is any glaucoma caused by an injury to the eye. This type of glaucoma can occur both immediately after an injury to the eye or years later. It can be caused by injuries that “bruise” the eye (called blunt trauma) and injuries that penetrate the eye. Conditions such as severe near sightedness, previous injury, infection or prior surgery may also make the eye more vulnerable to a serious eye injury. Pseudoexfoliation Syndrome PXF (or Exfoliation Syndrome) In PXF, flaky white material clogs the trabecular meshwork, which is the gutter or sponge that drains fluid away from the eye. Because this prevents fluid from draining properly, there is a build-up of pressure inside the eye, sometimes to very high levels. Juvenile Glaucoma — yes, babies and children can have glaucoma. In fact an infant can be born with serious eye problems due to glaucoma. It is rare but it is also very important to recognise it immediately. Treatment can prevent lifelong blindness. Look out for these features in every new born infant: ■ Large prominent eyes, ■ Sensitivity to Light - Children with raised intraocular pressure often become very sensitive to light. ■ Squeezing the eyes shut ■ Cloudy Eyes ■ Watering Eyes - In infantile glaucoma the tears flow excessively. ■ Poor Vision and Jerky Eyes (Nystagmus) Pigment Dispersion Syndrome (PDS) /Pigmentary Glaucoma is when black pigment granules

clog the trabecular meshwork, which is the drainage gutter that takes fluid away from the eye. Because this prevents fluid from draining properly, there is a build-up of pressure inside the eye, which in some cases damages vision. PDS occurs as a result of the shape of the iris (the coloured part of the eye). Normally the iris is shaped like a plate. In PDS, the iris falls back like a hammock. This causes the pigment layer on the back of the iris to rub against the structures that lie behind it. This rubbing action releases pigment particles into the eye.

Eye Exam A comprehensive exam, can reveal more risk factors, such as high eye pressure, thinness of the cornea, and abnormal optic nerve anatomy. In some people with certain combinations of these high-risk factors, medicines in the form of eye drops reduce the risk of developing glaucoma by about half A Glaucoma test usually includes: ■ Optic nerve check ■ Slit Lamp examination ■ Eye Pressure check (Tonometry) ■ Visual Field and/or OCT Scan

Can glaucoma be treated? Yes. Immediate treatment for early stage, open-angle glaucoma can delay progression of the disease. Glaucoma treatments include medicines, laser trabeculoplasty/ Iridotomy, conventional surgery (trabeculectomy), or a combination of any of these. While these treatments may save remaining vision, they do not improve sight already lost from glaucoma. Medicines, in the form of eye drops or pills, are the most common early treatment for glaucoma. Some medicines cause the eye to make less fluid. Others lower pressure by helping fluid drain from the eye. ➽ For more detailed information contact Glaucoma NZ; Phone 0800 452 826; Email info@glaucoma.org.mz; Or visit glaucoma.org.nz

Protect your body inside and out in winter Dry, flaky skin and a sluggish system don’t have to be your reality this winter if you follow holistic nutritionist Dr Libby Weaver’s tips. Hydrate

type of fat that is deficient in many people. Oily fish such as sustainable sardines or salmon, chia seeds, flax seeds and walnuts are all great. Coconut oil also makes a great topical moisturiser to use on dry areas.

Skin loves hydration — it’s your biggest organ and it needs a steady supply of fluid to stay hydrated, plump and glowing. Ensure that you are drinking plenty of filtered water, herbal tea, organic bone broth and vege juice. Fluids also help to flush out any harmful substances from the body and prevent these harmful substances from being excreted through the skin, where they can cause damage.

Be gentle

Move in a way that feels right for you. Some people thrive by working their muscles hard. Others benefit more from a walk in the park, or a relaxing yoga class. Even a few stretches first thing can help keep you flexible. If you don’t usually move your body very much then start small with a short walk, 15-minute swim or yoga session. Try a variety to find out what works best for you.

Your skin is a delicate organ, so be aware of what you are allowing to come into contact with it. Every day it is exposed to stresses and substances that are less than ideal, so it’s important not to compound this problem by using harmful skincare or makeup products as well. Look for skin brands with organic ingredients, free from synthetic substances. Take a break from makeup to prevent clogged pores and allow your skin to breathe. Keep hands away from your face as much as possible — they are covered in bacteria and transferring it to our face can cause problems.

Real food, as it comes in nature, is packed with a range of nutrients, all of which promote great skin. Avoid processed food, caffeine and alcohol and notice the difference this makes. Vitamin C is particularly helpful as it helps to combat free radical damage, which is part of the cause of ageing and wrinkles. Think citrus fruit, kiwifruit, capsicum and broccoli. Skin also loves fat — it helps maintain a moisture barrier which keeps skin soft and prevents drying. Flaky, dry patches or cracked heels and cuticles can be a sign you are lacking in essential fatty acids. Omega 3 fatty acids are particularly helpful — this is the

Optimal digestion is central to great health — try starting your day with the juice of half a lemon in warm water before breakfast. The acidic lemon juice helps to initiate stomach acid production which is needed to break down your food. Trial drinking lemon juice in warm water before breakfast for a week to see if you notice a reduction in bloating, reflux and gas.

Brush up Dry brushing is when you use a soft bristled brush to brush your skin. This technique increases blood flow to the skin, boosts lymphatic drainage — which helps remove waste products from the body — and exfoliates the skin. Always

Work out safely at home

brush towards the heart. Afterwards apply nourishing oils.

Inside out The face is a useful tool for exploring deeper issues. Flareups of pimples, acne, rosacea, eczema and rashes are a signal that other body systems may not

be functioning at their best. More often than not it is the gut that is not as happy as it could be. Poor digestion can lead to liver detoxification pathways that then struggle to clear unwanted substances from the body. When these substances are not eliminated efficiently the body looks for another way to excrete

them and the skin is then used as an excretory organ. This can trigger pimples, rashes and other skin troubles. A diet high in plant foods, lots of water and avoiding caffeine, trans fats, processed sugars and alcohol can all contribute to good digestion and happy, radiant, clear skin.

Here are some easy ways to give your children’s bedroom decor the subtlety and flexibility to grow as they grow

striking the balance of

COLOURS for KIDS D

ESIGNING a child’s bedroom can be a thrill. But are you striking the right balance between fun and practicality? After all, your kids will grow out of this space eventually, so you want to have flexibility eventually to repurpose the space. That said, there’s no point painting the walls with crisp “dense southern mist grey” and leaving the rest to your children’s imaginations — you want to incorporate bright colours or perhaps perfect pastels. Here are some absolutely gorgeous interior design ideas for bedrooms that strike this balance expertly. Not only will your children love the space, but you will, too.

NATURAL COOL

If you’ve explored grey shades in your living room or bathroom, you may be wondering whether you can extend these chic shades into a child’s room. On one hand, shades of grey — either neutral or with undertones of blue — are easy to match to furniture, curtains and flooring. On the other hand, they’re hardly inspiring, right? That’s not quite the case. You can create a fantastic vibe in a child’s room by pairing grey with off-white and plenty of natural wood finishes. Add accents in navy blue and plenty of quality bedding in white and cream. Plush pillows and blankets with thick textures will create a cosy vibe. Use blackboard paint to create a wall that encourages your children to get super creative. Neutral hues don’t have to be boring — they can actually create a very cosy room.

PURPLE SURPRISE

Maybe it was the oversized dinosaur that did it — children love purple. But are you hesitant about embracing shades from grape to blackcurrant in your home? There’s a solution to this dilemma, that does not involve having to lose the purple altogether.

ABOVE: Resene Hi Jinx and Resene Pretty in Pink are great colours for kids’ bedrooms.

LEFT: The blackboard city was created using Resene Blackboard Paint.

First, you need to pick the right hue and second, you need to use it in the appropriate way. Rather than taking to all four walls with sickly lilac or making your eyes hurt with electric shades of purple, opt for a more measured — yet fun — purple, like mulberry, or a 1920s purple Liberty print, all Edwardian and sedate. These hues have a richness to them that will ensure children’s rooms remain timeless in years to come, while maintaining a sense of fun. Pair a lighter purple with a lime green — it’s a great option for girls’ rooms. The green freshens the room and stops the purple from being too sweet. You can play up the purple theme with accessories in similar shades or a simple bunch of lavender, which will keep the room smelling delightful.

DITCH e th‘CANDY’ Pastel pink can be a top pick for kids' rooms. But if you're nervous about going over the walls with a hue inspired by fairy floss, there is a solution. Instead of opting for candy-like paint hues, instead choose a richer shade like musk rose, which has a mysterious, musky feel to it. Or try a rich orange-red that's fun without being too fiery. Both these shades are great for bedrooms. Use colours like these for a feature wall then use off-white paint for the ceiling, coves and other walls. Cream carpets and a quirky lampshade will create a room that's full of fun, without being overly impractical in years to come. You'll easily be able to convert the space into a home office once the kids leave the nest. Even as your child grows older in the space, they'll be able to decorate in line with their preferences, without clashing with the simple colour scheme. Don't forget the fun accessories if you pick this colour scheme — think wicker baskets, framed pictures, painted furniture and frames, and a bed with an intricate headboard.

by LEIGH BRAMWELL “

his is extraordinary,” was the first thought that crossed Murray Chick’s mind when he turned into the driveway of a property for sale at Glenbervie in Whangarei. He and his partner Alan were driving around in a last ditch effort to find the right house to buy, and as they drove up the palm and fern lined driveway, this one did the trick. Initially, Murray’s description of ‘extraordinary’ referred to the 1.5 hectares of land, the private setting and the look of the big, low slung, north facing house. “We’d never seen anything like it,” he recalls. There was no doubting this builder’s own home was wellbuilt, with cedar framing, a concrete base, brick walls, big sliding doors, extralarge windows, heavy duty aluminium joinery, copper nails and a Monier tiled roof. Quality was the hallmark. Inside, the house was even more extraordinary at 550 square metres, with an open plan, very large spaces, big entertaining areas, three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a bar, games room with a pool table, and an indoor swimming pool. And then there was the de´cor. The house was a seventies icon with features any retro enthusiast would die for, and it was all in excellent condition, apart from the need of a coat of paint in the living area and replacement wallpaper in one bedroom. Murray wouldn’t have described himself as a retro fan back then, but he and Alan appreciated the interior for what it was, and it didn’t take long for them to make a decision on the obvious dilemma – completely redecorate the entire house in

And they have learned to love

it, maintaining a ‘hands-off’ policy apart from adding a range hood, and having the original brown oven completed restored. Living in the house has been a pleasure, and Murray has especially enjoyed the garden. He has done what he describes as some ‘simple landscaping’ and created a serene, private

environment with big trees and sweeping lawns to complement the stature of the house. Leaving the pink formica and matching fleur de lis wallpaper in one bathroom, the pantry as large as the average modern kitchen and the brown brick wishing well in the foyer will tug at the heart strings, as will

GET THE LOOK It has been described as the decade that taste forgot, but that hasn’t stopped many of us from embracing seventies de´cor with as much enthusiasm as we did the first time around. After all, there’s no dismissing the decade's contribution to architecture, furniture design and interior decorating and many of the elements are being used as the anchor for edgy interior design in homes, offices, retail spaces and cafes the world over. In his book 70s House, David Heathcote writes that the decade was a significant watershed for interior domestic design, marking the transition from the Modernist 60s to an era in which “style and the individualistic ethos of fashion design became the guiding principles.” While many rooms of the time resembled wall-to-wall carpeted, woodpaneled dungeons, the decade’s residential architecture was actually very innovative in terms of space and light. Open plan living was a guiding concept, and self-expression and individuality were hallmarks of the time. If you can see the potential of a return

to the seventies, these are the elements that will make your retro de´cor a success. ■ Wood paneling ■ Scandinavian teak and pine ■ Sleek plastics and high-tech materials ■ Avocado green bathroomware ■ Wall-to-wall carpeting ■ Sunken living rooms ■ Bold patterns and prints ■ Orange glass light fittings and panels with a circular motif ■ Stacked stone fireplace and stone walls inside ■ Timbered ceiling beams ■ Skylights ■ Indoor gardens and ponds ■ Bubble glass ■ Fireplaces with elevated hearth ■ Big windows and lots of glass ■ Earth tones: brick, rust, sand, avocado, harvest gold ■ Arches ■ Ceiling fans ■ Timber paneling ■ Kitchen ‘islands’ ■ Chocolate brown strata brick ■ Tan or brown appliances

Most beds currently on the market are ‘zoned’ (either 3,5 or 7 zoned.) Zoning means the

springs are divided into sections giving different support levels in certain areas to provide natural spinal alignment and extra lumbar support where you need it most. The biggest mistake people make is the old belief

that a firm bed is best for a bad back!.. Not so, particularly when you are a side sleeper. This will end up pushing your hips and shoulders up and in turn not align your spine as it should, plus you will experience pressure build up in your hip and shoulder areas if its too firm. So when trying beds in store, please make sure you lie on the beds as you would at home. Also bear in mind that if you add layers on top of the mattress, excluding the mattress protector and sheet, such as underlays and electric blankets, this will make your bed feel a lot firmer when comparing it with the feel you where after in the bed store. Our team at BedsRus are very experienced and, once they have asked a range of important questions, will advise you which beds to try. So please set time aside for this important decision.

Pillows: side, stomach or back sleepers

The same goes for choice of pillows. When choosing the correct pillow… and this is extremely important, it needs to match your mattress in terms of the position you sleep. Pillows are designed for stomach, side or back sleepers. The best way to choose the correct pillow is to do it at the same time as choosing your mattress, but we should replace our pillows far more frequently than our beds. Therefore it makes sense to try it lying down on a similar bed to the one you have at home.

BEDFRAMES As the range of pillows is extremely extensive and made up of all sorts of materials such as latex, microfibre, feathers, foam, wool, buckwheat, silk, bamboo, fusion gel, etc it can be confusing. Therefore, in order to make the correct choice for that perfect sleep, it is best to call into a bed specialist store, such as BedsRus, where we can here to help. Some pillows can be fluffed up in your drier, especially feather and microfibre, but it does depend on its composition. Last but not least, we should all only sleep on one pillow, to keep our spine and head aligned with the exception of those who have medical problems like vertigo or reflux, etc. One last tip, try placing a low profile pillow between your knees, when sleeping on your side, this helps with hip problems.

Manuka and Kanuka

Do you wish your gardens looked like the ones in the glossy magazines? Neatly rounded shrubs, tidy edges, fresh colourful blooms and minimal weeds. The key is maintenance. Simply spend time regularly pruning, weeding, fertilizing and don’t forget singing to your plants. “But I don’t have time” I hear you say, you’re not alone and I have some suggestions for you. Next time you come and shop with us, whether it’s for a couple of filler plants or an entire garden makeover, keep in mind just how needy your plants can get. For lower formal hedging that requires minimal trimming go for plants with a compact growth habit such as Hebe topiaria, Hebe diosmifolia, Hebe ‘Emerald Gem’, Corokia ‘Little Prince’, Coprosma mangatangi. To bring colour to your garden without having to dead head flowers, or sweep up fallen petals from driveways etc, try some of the plants on the right.

Tagasaste: the perfect plant? by DEBBIE OLDFIELD A fast growing small tree, the Tagasaste (Tree Lucerne) has nectar in early spring for the bees and tuis, and wood pigeons love eating the leaves and flowers. It flowers for a long time, starting in early spring when food (nectar) is in short food supply for a lot of insects and birds. It can be used as a quick

growing hedge, it gets to a height of 3-4m. and width 3m and can be easily trimmed. These trimmings can be fed to stock. It’s often used for a nurse tree to get other plants established beneath, then is removed. Suitable for firewood and fixs nitrogen into the soil. Grow in full sun in well drained soil. Great food for stock, nectar for birds and bees, fast-growing shelter belt/hedge, firewood and fixs nitrogen ... perfect plant?

AM known as The Colour Lady and I definitely don’t mind because I love to wear colour and my home is full of colour. But when I am working with clients, it’s not my colour favourites that are important. More often than not it’s my client’s personality that determines what colours and textures we use. Colour affects each of us differently: it can give us a lift or bring us down, soothe us or make us angry, make us feel anxious or give us a peaceful night’s sleep, make us feel cold or make us feel warm. It is so important to get it right! Every situation is different. I don’t generally work with the trends, because trends come and go and date. I feel it is better to work with the style of the home and the people who live there — especially if they are intending to make this their home rather than building a house as a stepping stone. I prefer good, timeless design and the odd quirky piece. I hate the throw-away society that we have become, with the overuse of packaging and wrapping, furniture that doesn’t last because it has been poorly made and household items that are gimmicky and don’t last. Gimmicky is great but choose something that is designed to last, otherwise what is the point in spending your hard-earned money? And do you really want something all your friends also have? Flying into Christchurch a few weeks ago on one of those beautiful, inspirational earlymorning flights — this particular morning was crystal clear just on dawn with snow-capped ranges turning soft grey, blue, pink, apricot ... capped in pure white with a stunning blue sky — I realised I don’t think I will ever get tired of our stunning landscape. Nature has so many beautiful colours and textures, from subtle to bold, everything imaginable to delight one’s palette. I looked down on townships, farmhouses nestled in hillsides, cities, twinkling lights, silvergrey rivers winding their way down to the sea, and everything was just coming alive at that hour of the morning. I saw patches of colour in roofs, bright blue swimming pools, green gardens and trees and the contrasts between the older established areas and the new subdivisions. It doesn’t seem to matter which city you fly over when it comes to newly formed subdivisions, they are sadly all the same. Grey or various tones of grey and light brown, in rows and blocks with roofs all the same colour and texture. We visited many showhomes when I was in Christchurch and found very little individuality. Even on the inside of many of these homes it was the same, one

ONE OF A KIND: An Italian-designed dining chair for a minimalistic home the author worked on a few years ago, above; an example of using detail to define individuality within the home, below.

colour throughout. There were no focal points within the rooms because the textures and colours became one with no defining points. Often even the furniture and accessories blended into the monotonal sameness. I had to ask myself: “Have we lost our individuality or are these homes neutral so you can put your mark on the interior and finish it in a fashion that suits

you?” Given the price tickets, I don’t think it was the latter and, given the exteriors were permanent materials rather than a finish that you could add colour to at a later date like a weatherboard home, you were stuck with the exterior colour as well. We are individuals, our likes and dislikes are different. What suits you within your home may grate with your friends — I have found everyone has an opinion whether you want to hear it or not. But other people’s opinions are theirs and they don’t live in your home. Don’t be afraid to be the individual you were born to be and if you need professional help don’t be afraid to ask. I used to say to my kids, “Be a leader not a sheep”, as my daughter reminded me the other day when I challenged her on something she was doing. She said: “Mum I am the way I am because you taught me to be an individual, to love myself and stand up for who I am and what I believe in.” ■ Terry Lobb is an interior/ kitchen designer and personal colour and style consultant who takes a holistic approach to living with colour, texture and style

Plan for summer with hospitality training I

t might be one of the coldest winters we’ve experienced in years, but believe it or not, summer isn’t too far away. And if you’re looking for a great career, why not plan ahead and join one of NorthTec’s wellrespected hospitality programmes? You can start on a programme in July and finish in December — just in time to walk into a job in Whangarei’s many cafes, bars and restaurants. You’ll learn your craft in NorthTec’s purpose-built restaurant and cafe´ premises, serving staff, students and members of the public while you study. Our hospitality students are regular award winners in competitions held regionally and nationally, and are soughtafter by the local industry. At the recent Northland Salon Culinaire contest — an annual event hosted by NorthTec and run by the Northland branch of the New Zealand Chefs Association — NorthTec’s Delwyn Mohi was crowned Northland’s Commis Chef of the Year in a very closerun competition against two of her classmates. Her fellow students also triumphed, with Kayla Tukaki and Rachel Tribble taking home gold medals for their work in different categories. All three are students on the New Zealand

Yuri Ariston-Smith at work in NorthTec’s purpose-built restaurant. Certificate in Cookery (level 4) programme. For young people aged 16 to 19, the hospitality industry can be a great place to start working. NorthTec offers a fantastic feesfree option for this age group which also includes help with literacy and numeracy, information technology, financial planning, goal-setting and even transport to and from classes. The Certificate in Foundation Studies - Hospitality will help bring you up to speed with

general study and life skills, while also teaching you all the basics required by the industry. It includes baking, coffee making and catering for large groups, and will also introduce you to ethnic cuisine, food safety and knife skills. Of course, you’ll learn how to provide excellent customer service too. For students of any age wanting to make a start in the industry, NorthTec offers the New Zealand Certificate in Food and Beverage Service, a level 3 programme geared towards

general skills. You’ll be taught all about kitchen health and safety, food preparation and service and great customer service. You’ll also learn how to be a skilled barista and serve up the perfect cup of coffee. Starting in July in Whangarei, the programme will give you all the skills you need to go straight into work. NorthTec also offers the New Zealand Certificate in Cookery. This level 3 programme is the essential introduction to professional cookery and will

equip you to work as a junior chef producing basic dishes in a commercial kitchen. You can go on to study this programme at level 4, with a special fast-track option starting in July and finishing in February 2016. It’ll give you the skills to produce dishes using more complex preparation and presentation techniques, and to develop intermediate level culinary skills. The New Zealand Diploma in Cookery (Advanced) is the next step up and will prepare you for a senior chef role, producing advanced dishes in a professional kitchen. You’ll learn how to plan and prepare a wide range of dishes to restaurant quality, and will also develop skills in staff selection and management. This full-time level 5 programme starts in July in Whangarei, and there’s also a fast-track option which pulls together the level 4 and 5 qualifications into a single programme, helping you get upskilled and into employment more quickly. So why not come and study hospitality with NorthTec. It could be the start of a great career combining artistic flair with excellent customer service. ■ Contact NorthTec on 0800 162 100 or visit northtec.ac.nz to enrol or to find out more.

Winter awakening Wife, mother, journalist ... PHILIPPA MANNAGH reveals the highs and lows, and the challenges in life ...

I

happen to look forward to winter. After the initial gorge of food to keep myself warm and then the sore gut afterwards — it makes for the perfect reminder that I love good food and my body doesn’t need that much. Truthfully, my exercise peeters out a bit but then soup making creeps in and I can happily live off soup alone throughout the week. My soul food. These cooler months, my focus is on sleep. As the night sky draws his curtains earlier and the frost creeps across the damp ground, it is an easy choice to stay in, take a bath and drag yourself into a warm bed.

My new love for soy melts burn throughout the house offering a comforting scent to get me through these shorter days. I guess I hibernate a bit — and I look forward to it! Life is go go go with a young family and to have a great excuse to focus in and grab some me time feels like we are enriching our journey together over this season. More sleep-ins and pj wearing until noon… More family movies, huts, hot chocolates and warm fires. It is almost like this is the way it is meant to be, an annual well deserved rest for tired bodies and minds. Lately yoga has been a new priority as is practising diaphragmatic breathing and I'm still attending Fit Mums once a week and walking when I can.

I got an urge to get out and run again this morning, it was nice to feel some motivation in that area again and I am sure I will pick it up soon. June saw the completion of Junk-Free June and again, this was a fabulous opportunity to draw in and concentrate on the food I was fuelling my body with. It also gave me the kick I needed to drop a couple of kgs, smashing through a personal barrier. Pull out the positives in this chill, lap up the sun beams when she graces herself with her presence and give yourself a well deserved break for a while! Happy winter. Stop thinking about what you want to do and work on what has to be done. Advice given to me by my son when I asked him what the challenges were on raising twins (now 6 months old) along with a 2 year old. Mum, life changes when you have twins ... Time — where does it go? Routine — both partners need to be on the same page to make it work and embrace the journey. Drive and motivation is required to make sure that that routine is carried out. Exhaustion — You will be so tired, you literally won’t remember most of the first 3 to 6 months. If given the chance, we would have slept anywhere; on the floor, in a dining room chair, standing up, leaning over. The level of exhaustion is so intense it is like looking into the sun. If you have an older child who will need your attention when you aren’t with the babies, invest in a serious coffee maker! Vehicle — has to be able to accommodate three car seats! Funds — now everything has to be doubled. You will have no money. Ever again. Twins are an experience unlike any other …. Embrace the craziness, and be good to yourselves. It really does get better. Someday. I’m sure of it. Preparing ourselves is of prime importance. Financially — Create a savings plan and stick to it but be realistic. Start small, early and get into a habit. Prioritise — Look at what you can

This recipe originated from a recipe produced by the Canterbury District Health Board for a Senior Chef Programme. We run these courses here at the Anglican Care Centre, for further information give us a call. Curried Kumara Soup: 1 tblsp oil 1 onion, chopped 1 tsp minced garlic 1 tsp curry powder 1 kumara 2 cups chicken stock 1/3 cup coconut milk or evaporated milk Heat the oil in a large saucepan.
