AUGUST 2015
Beauty comes from within; it’s a multiple of things including happiness, elegance, confidence, charisma and so on. Beauty and happiness are often talked about as one thing, so how do we make ourselves happy and in turn beautiful? Practising an attitude of gratitude is one technique that I’ve found has worked wonders for picking myself up when life’s less than perfect moments happen. Sometimes searching for the “silver lining” is all you need to turn your mood around. When you have a moment of self doubt think of three things you are thankful for. ■ If you want to overcome feeling like you’re not good enough, think of three things that have challenged, you that you have conquered. Be thankful that you had the courage, the ability and the knowledge to get past those hurdles. ■ If you are looking in the mirror and feeling you’re not pretty enough, think of three things that you have that others may not. Be thankful for your nose, eyes, lips, brows etc. They give you the gift of smell, sight and taste that others do not have. Very few people are perfectly symmetrical and even fewer people appreciate it. ■ Want to do something new but think you can’t? Think of three things you can do to move towards your goal, however small those steps may be and be thankful for the opportunity to do each of those things. ■ Be thankful for the people around you; your friends, family, acquaintances. The people who share their lives with you, who care enough to do things for you and with you. Do a wonderful thing for them by telling them how grateful you are for doing the things they do. Trust me they’ll love you for it and it’ll make you happy too. ■ When others are cruel, say offending things ... I believe everything is an opportunity to learn and sometimes the biggest lessons are the hardest ones. A critical comment from someone can trigger self-hate. Instead of holding onto the words, be grateful that you now know what is hurting you and can work towards addressing it. Don’t let yourself be influenced by the outside world, what we see, hear and experience can change our outlook, for better or worse. However small the things you are grateful are; they are worth thinking about. Taking the time to focus on what you have will lift your mood, make you happy and let your beauty shine.

Ricardo wows with carving skills by LEIGH BRAMWELL
W
hen Ricardo Mendoza began an apprenticeship as a cabinet maker in the Philippines, he didn’t foresee a career that would involve working on a Luxury lodge project for a Russian billionaire at Helena Bay Lodge development in Northland. Ricardo came to New Zealand eight years ago to work for the innovative Whangarei marine interiors company SMI Group, and that has taken his life down some unexpected paths. The most extraordinary, perhaps, has led him to show off his talent as a carver, with a commission through SMI to carve two massive, timber entrance doors for Helena Bay Lodge. It was a project that took two months, working mainly with hand tools. “When initially we took Ricardo on we didn’t even know
PHOTOS: MICHAEL CUNNINGHAM his brother and sister through school, so he started work as an apprentice cabinet maker. “I was working in a big company in the Philippines and there an agency came to our town to hire furniture-makers for New Zealand,” Ricardo says. “I decided to apply and I was very lucky. Both my brother and I came to New Zealand and have been here now for eight years.” Judy recalls that recruiting skilled staff in New Zealand was incredibly difficult at the time so the company had to use an international recruitment agent, and then complete interviews by Skype. But she remembers that Ricardo was one of the top applicants. Since he has been working for SMI the company has diversified somewhat, to not only creating interiors for international superyachts but to also providing interior cabinetry and furniture
he could carve,” says SMI general manager Judy Ward-Butler. “We chose him and some others for their cabinet making skills when we had some very big projects on a few years ago and we needed skilled workers.” They found out about Ricardo’s exceptional talent when the company was downsizing and assessing the skills of all their staff. “Ricardo came into the office and put this incredible carving down on the table and said: ‘I have this skill you can use’. Ricardo grew up in a small town in the Philippines where there were lots of carvers, but he needed regular work to support

for high-end residences and lodges. And while most of his work is in this area, Ricardo keeps his hand in adding carved detailing to custom furniture table when it’s called for. He enjoys the work and the environment, and likes living in Whangarei. “I like the weather, the views and the people,” he says, adding that he has no plans for return to the Philippines on a permanent basis. “I will stay in New Zealand as I am supporting my family here, with one son studying to be a software engineer at Massey,” he says. “I see the rest of my life staying here, but still visiting family at home.” ■ Ricardo will be showing his skills on the SMI stand at the Northland Home & Leisure Show at Kensington, Whangarei, September 25 to 27.

A strong advocate for the NZARH Hairdressing Awards, Hazel sees them as a powerful tool for team-building, personal motivation, staff development and an all-round positive boost for salon culture. The awards themselves create an atmosphere of collegiate competitiveness; driving participants to new heights and giving apprentices and

Having won five awards herself at the latest competitions — with two of them firsts, and one of them giving her the title of Oceanic Champion — Hazel firmly believes that her success derives from a determination to continually push her own limits. This is an attitude that she encourages throughout the Three Hairdressing salon: so much so, in fact, that 8 of her colleagues also entered the awards this year! And while many may balk at the idea of such intensive practice, training and focus, Hazel says it is exactly that which brings her immeasurable personal, team and business benefits. ‘When people ask me why I compete,’ explains Hazel. ‘I liken it to a marathon: you won’t train if you don’t sign up. I compete because it raises the standard of our industry, it gives entrants a massive confidence boost, it

Goal setting, professionalism, dedication and focus; for hair stylists of all ages, from all backgrounds, and from every salon – the competitions provide a level playing field for us all to test our abilities!’ Hazel is also keen to assist stylists in their preparations
for the NZARH Northland Regional Hairdressing Competitions; and having won over 30 awards since starting her career, she is well-placed to do so. Her advice to stylists considering entering is simple: ‘You can’t get there on your own. Reach out to your regional judge and go to your regional competition awareness seminar. Find your ‘je ne sais quoi’
RENCH WOMEN wear it best! We have all heard about Parisian style — tailored jackets, red lipstick, artfully rumpled hair from biking through Paris (no helmet law there), stripes paired back with spots. So after spending a week in the City of Love (and fashion) I finally figured out why the French wear it best. It’s because French women walk to the beat of their own drum; they are not trying to fit into anyone else’s image; they are not following trends. They love fashion, take pride in their appearance and being French and, most importantly, wear clothes that fit them and suit their style, not making themselves fit the clothes. Look at French Vogue editorin-chief Emmanuelle Alt, one of my style heroes. With a fashion sense similar to a rockstar girlfriend, Emmanuelle is effortless and chic. “You cannot

French than that? Emmanuelle will never be heard to say a woman is too old to appear in Vogue, and you can feel that being echoed on the streets of Paris. Women in their 60s on bikes with Repetto ballet flats, tailored dresses and scarfs. Isabel Marant slouchy leather pants, shirts and tailored blazers and Saint Laurent heels — Emmanuelle doesn’t want to suffer in clothes. It’s the French way — they want to feel comfortable, to express themselves, to feel great in their own way. Another French style icon, Ines de la Fressange, is synonymous with her daily uniform, a simple but polished combination of high-waisted cropped trousers, white top, light jacket, and flats. This utterly refreshing lack of conformity is the cleverest way to always look appropriate and never dated, and it’s the tried-and-true secret among

French women of her generation. It’s the epitome of personal style, of the art of dressing like a woman, one with a job, and things to do beyond going to an event to get her picture taken. What’s more effortless — or chic — than that? Other French style icons include Brigitte Bardot, Jane Birkin and, of course, Coco Chanel. She is remembered for her classic suits and penchant for tweed and pearls and, though this seems a tad old fashioned, her taste was revolutionary for women in the 20th century. Mixing prints and textures, how chic, how daring. And the Chanel bag is still a must-have serious fashion statement — it’s the top of my long list. OW is the perfect time to renew your look and embrace the season. Fortunately, you don’t need to spend hours at the salon or break the bank updating your look. A few expert tips will have you looking radiant and feeling confident, turning heads no matter where you go. EcoTools Beauty Team members and expert stylists Teni Panosian and Christine Symonds have created a complete makeup and hair look that is easy to achieve at home with the right tools. “This season is all about beautiful skin with small pops of colour,” says Panosian, YouTube beauty sensation and the voice behind MissMaven.com.

Step 1: Start by partially blow drying wet hair to remove moisture. Step 2: Finish blow drying with a full round brush, focusing mainly on the ends to create movement. Try a hair brush with cruelty-free synthetic boar hair bristles to create shine. Step 3: Gather top section of hair and clip it out of the way. Leave enough hair on each side above the ears to create two small braids. Secure with an elastic band. Step 4: Drop the top section previously clipped up and gather all the hair into a low ponytail, leaving out the two side braids. Bring the two braids together in the back of the head and secure tightly with a small elastic band. Step 5: Undo low ponytail and elastics around the ends of the two small braids (not the one that just secured the braids together). Get rid of your bulge Let’s face it, we’ve all had that moment when those jeans just won’t zip up the whole way (queue the awkward bed dance, while trying to hold your breath and squeeze on in). Or the adorable little bulges of back fat, that roll over the bra, and show through in a tight top, it’s annoying. I know I’ve been doing my crunches, but it’s still there! Caci have come through for the team with their new non-surgical fat reduction treatment which freezes and destroys fat cells, called ChillSculpt. Freezing fat cells sounds a bit crazy, but it’s safe, and it works. Once the cells have been treated, they die, and then are processed through the body with all of our other waste. It’s a pretty simple process really and only takes an hour, plus the team at Caci

Start with a deep breath and clear your mind. Commit to leaving worries and stress at the shower door, and instead focus on positive, energising thoughts. Envision a carefree weekend activity, or recall the sights and sounds of a soothing tropical getaway. Channel your attention on creating positive energy.
SET THE MOOD
Set the mood with the right music and lighting. If you shower in the morning, give yourself a burst of energy with upbeat music and a brightly lit room. Conversely, if you’re winding down the day, mellow tunes and dimmed lights will help slow your pace.
MOISTURISE
Moisturise your skin from head to toe with a hydrating body wash that leaves skin feeling soft and radiant.
BE WARY OF HEAT
Though you may be tempted to let the steaming water soothe your skin and tired muscles, be wary of keeping the heat up too long. Excessive hot water can be harsh on your hair and skin, and strip skin of moisture. Instead go for a lukewarm or slightly warmer temperature and finish with a cool blast to help seal pores and invigorate your spirit.
INDULGE
Even if you’re short on time, commit to indulging in one pampering treatment each day, such as deep conditioning your hair or exfoliating tired skin. With these few simple changes, you’ll be able to make the most of each shower, leaving you feeling refreshed, rejuvenated and ready to tackle the day.

We all want to look our best in photos, let’s face it, pics are around for a long time. Following are some tips from the experts.
Learn how to snapshot your good looks By Lisa Lyford
K
eryn, our new Gorgeous Me photographer, shared her favourite tip with us during our last makeover — “work it like a turtle”!
WORK IT LIKE A TURTLE!
Most people think you should tilt your head up to avoid the double chin and this does work but it also narrows the eyes because they’re looking downward . Instead slightly push your head forward from your shoulders, like a turtle popping its head out. I did say “slightly”.
HAVE A LAUGH
Some people are naturally photogenic, lucky things. For others, it takes practice. Have a small laugh or think of something funny just before the picture is taken, that will relax you and give a gorgeous friendly

pose with a natural smile.
POWDER IT
Avoid your face shining by using matte foundation. Colour match is important — see above.
ARE YOU A BLINKER?
Do you blink at the wrong time, just when the camera clicks? Here’s a wee trick for you, close your eyes and when the photographer is ready, open them.
shots, turn your body to a more slim three-quarter angle, with one leg a little to the front.
TAKEN FROM ABOVE
Photos taken from “slightly” above you are actually more flattering. I’m not suggesting you drop to your knees the moment a photo is about to be taken. This is a great tip for selfies: hold your camera slightly above you. If the camera is too high though, it can make you look short.
WORK YOUR BEST GET THAT ANGLE FOUNDATION Rather than looking at the camera face on, turn your head a COLOUR RIGHT bit to the side, it can be very flattering. Work out your best profile. The same applies to full-length
If your foundation colour is too light and doesn’t tone in with your chest, it will illuminate in the photos.
A HEALTHY GLOW
Accentuate your cheekbones and give yourself a healthy glow by using blusher. Make-up artists say this is a “must do”.
REDUCE RED EYE
Apparently looking towards light just before a photo is taken, will make your pupils smaller and help reduce red eye. Lisa Lyford is the founder of Gorgeous Me, free DIY personal styling and makeover advice. www.gorgeousme.co Send your questions for Lisa to regionalfeatures@nzme.co.nz

Short-term memory loss? Check B12 levels Herbalist LES helps address health issues the natural way I am in my 70’s and generally very healthy. Just lately I have been forgetting silly things — where I put my car keys, shopping lists, appointments etc. It may just be my age but can you advise on some natural supplements which might help. I don’t have a problem remembering things that happened years ago and I try to do the crossword and Sudoku every day to keep my brain active. I am not taking any medication apart from glucosamine for my joints and Vitamin C. — Bob W Short-term memory loss can be upsetting and annoying and so your frustration is completely understandable. Sometimes, as we get older, our B12 levels drop and this can affect the memory as well as many other bodily functions. Vitamin B12, or cobalamin, is vital to every cell in the body and it affects every system — nervous, digestive, cardiovascular, endocrine, ear, nose and throat. It should be easy to get all the B12 we need from our diet as it comes from every single animal product — meat, fish
and dairy. For example a 100g chunk of cheese provides your recommended daily amount of 2.5mcg. But, as we age, the stomach shrinks and produces less of the acid needed for B12 absorption to take place. Sage contains active ingredients that boost the chemicals that trigger transmission of messages within the brain. When scientists from the Universities of Newcastle and Northumbria in the UK tested 44 people, by having them take either sage or a placebo, results showed that those given sage performed better in a word recall test. To blend your own massage oil, add up to 6 drops of sage oil to 30ml of a carrier oil such as almond or grapeseed and massage into the temples. Or place one to two drops of sage oil onto your pillow at night. I recommend that you take Thompsons 3rd Age Senior multi-vitamin/mineral which contains a number of ingredients that can potentially be of benefit to you. Health Post have a number of supplements to aid memory. I like the Microgenics Gingko 6000 complex. This also contains rosemary which has been traditionally used to improve memory and has been shown to have antioxidant properties that neutralize free radicals. Also, here are some practical tips to consider: ■ Decide on one place for your wallet, purse and keys and put them there as soon as you come in. If you park in a car park, always put the ticket in the same place — habit is reassuring. ■ Use a wall calendar to remind you to do
Kids need plenty of good sleep Establishing a consistent bedtime routine is a prelude to a great night’s sleep, which is critical for young bodies and brains. Here are helpful ways to create healthy bedtime habits for you and your family. Books before bed: Electronic devices are a part of life. Even some young children may spend a portion of time each day using tablets, mobile phones and e-readers. However, the light emitted from these devices can hinder sleep, so make sure you incorporate screen-free time before bed. Substitute electronics with good oldfashioned books, storytelling time, board games and puzzles. Brush Up: Children and parents should learn more about preventive dental care and the importance of a healthy oral care routine. They can also give back and help
other children in the community who may not have access to dental care. Brushing is a fundamental healthy habit. Kids are never too young to learn how to take care of their smile. Set a schedule: Sticking to a set bedtime for kids may be difficult at first for you and your children. But once everyone adjusts to the schedule, the benefits will be made clear. A consistent bedtime policy will be easier to enforce, and kids’ internal clocks will likely adjust to the schedule over time. To determine an appropriate bedtime for your school-age kids, factor in the Mayo Clinic recommendation of nine to 11 hours of sleep a night. For better sleep and healthy smiles, create bedtime routines for you and your family that are easy to follow.

THE CUT: SENIOR STYLIST
For Teresa and her talented team at Villa Hairdressing, the NZARH Awards offered a fantastic opportunity to step outside of their comfort zone; to push the limits of their abilities, and above all to raise the profile of the hairstylists and their salon. It’s a win-win situation — for Teresa in particular! Winner of the NZARH The Colour award, after 26 years in the industry (and after many competitions) Teresa still finds the experience thrilling — and it gives her an extra measure of respect for competing stylists. ‘I take my hat off to anyone who has the guts to compete,’ says Teresa. ‘It takes real commitment: it’s great exposure for your salon, great for the team and great for your clients! I’m looking forward to the Supremes, but most of all, to bringing all of this experience back to my clients here in the salon.’ Teresa and her talented stylists have competed in a number of competitions for many years; and with yet another success under their belt, they’re looking forward to attending the Supremes in October.
With nine stylists from Three Hairdressing taking home 14 awards this year, business owners Hazel, Jemal and Katie are absolutely ecstatic with the recent NZARH competition results. The Maunu-based salon always encourages their stylists to compete, as they strongly believe that the benefits for both salon culture and personal growth are huge. Their clients are also benefiting from the extra focus and energy involved in competition prep; with their awardwinning stylists having practiced and trained for months leading up to the big day. ‘These competitions continue to raise our standard of hairdressing,’ explains co-owner Hazel Newman, ‘from pushing creativity and techniques through to team building and staff development, we see the NZARH Awards as a truly valuable opportunity!’ With 3 of their team — Misty, Vanessa and Hazel herself — continuing on to compete at the Supremes in October, and with Hazel having also won Oceanic Champion, the journey is far from over for this successful team: congratulations Three Hairdressing!
Northland Hair Company Kerikeri-based Northland Hair Company were also great contenders at the NZARH Northland Regional Hairdressing Awards, with senior stylist Laurel scooping up the prestigious Oceanic Hairdressing Masters Award for The Conversion. This event saw Laurel using all of her technical and creative ability to show the evolution from one style into another: showcasing versatility, fashionsense, out-of-the-box thinking and technical skill in one action-packed arena. Laurel thoroughly enjoyed the experience: not simply because of her success, but the entire process of preparation, training, experimenting, practicing and competing left her feeling invigorated and re-inspired. ‘It’s all about striving for excellence,’ says Laurel of the NZARH Regional Awards. ‘Perfecting your skills, improving your cutting, your colouring, and your hair-up skills. It keeps us looking at what’s current in the fashion world, and in turn it offers our clients the absolute latest in technique and fashion!’ Competing at the Oceanics will offer Laurel the opportunity to showcase her talents on a trans-tasman stage, and while bringing fantastic exposure for Northland Hair Company, and potentially another award to add to the shelf.
Strand Salon For intermediate stylist Emily Openshaw, the fantastic salon culture and supportive atmosphere at the Strand Salon played a large part in enabling her to take home the NZARH Next Generation award for The Style. Emily also won 4th place at the recent Auckland competitions; a huge achievement for this young up-and-coming stylist. As Emily is quick to point out, however, it was the 4 months of preparation, the endless hours of coaching and support from her boss and mentor Marilyn, and the patient encouragement from her salon team that really boosted her to the top. ‘I’m just so grateful to Marilyn, the Strand Salon stylists and our clients, and everyone who has been involved in this part of my life,’ says Emily. ‘I am so proud of this achievement — I have learned so much; it has inspired me and given me such a confidence boost!’ With the Supremes coming up in October, Emily has another run of late nights ahead of her: luckily she knows her supportive salon will be right behind her.

Aspects of interior design
T
here are various aspects of interior design. This could be from an architectural or design point of view, right through to home de´cor. There is a close relationship between architectural design and interior design and they must be conducive for the best possible outcome to be achieved.
Architectural Design
The architectural design of interiors is the starting point for interior design. If you are building a new home, then you would work with your architectural designer to have the best possible design for your home, which will complement

what you wish to achieve on an interior design basis. Architectural design is challenged even further with the emerging global trend for the design and construction of smaller, more compact homes. This is where your architectural designer will be able to assist and show you various plans/ idea’s, which can assist in implementing key angles and lines, effective use of space and the section you are building on. Ensure you are happy with every aspect of the plan before signing on the dotted line. Making alterations during or after the build can be costly and something you really need to avoid from the very beginning. Your architect is experienced
in this aspect and will work with you to achieve the balance you desire.
Interior De´cor Design
The architectural design of your home as stated above, will be the starting point for your interior de´cor design. Your home will be shaped to complement the interior design look, you wish to achieve. Once your home has been built, you can start dressing and adding the finishing touches to your home. Sharp angles and lines, lend itself to a modern, contemporary interior with stark furnishings and key statement points. While softer angles and lines, will give the feeling of warmth, luxury and intimacy — where you can play more with the interior de´cor, such as giving the vintage, shabby chic or luxurious, romantic look. Whatever your style — the choices are endless! An interior designer will be able to provide you the best advice you have ever received. An interior designer will help you to decorate your home with flair and offer advice on key elements, you may have never considered. They can turn your home from a decorating disaster into your dream home. It is those finishing touches that make all the difference. Provide your interior designer with a starting point, therefore provide photos of your interior, have them come and visit, provide samples of what you had in mind — therefore photo’s, pictures from magazines, colour samples, etc…. This will assist in providing an insight into what you like. Then let your interior designer do their magic! Be open- minded as your interior design comes to life!

There are easy ways to add light to a dark bathroom or to close off part of an overly-large living area without going to the expense and inconvenience of major renovations. Simply adding a pop of colour can transform a problem space
Two property predicaments and . . .
how to overcome them AN EXTRA-LARGE LIVING ROOM Open-plan living is all the rage, but it doesn’t work for everyone. Perhaps you enjoy being able to entertain friends or keep an eye on the kids. Open-plan living can certainly facilitate this. But perhaps you feel like your openplan living space is just a little too large. It might feel like it’s not quite as homely as it could be, or feels a little stark. There are ways to make this space inviting, without compromising the benefits of open-plan living. Start by creating areas that are centred on certain activities, such as reading, watching television, dining and preparing food. You may find that the layout of your kitchen — particularly if you have an island-style bench — keeps this separate, but the rest of your living area blends into one oversize space. You can use a sectional, chaise lounge or bench seat to divide it. This is a more practical solution than putting in a wall — the items used to divide your living space also have another function (specifically, for relaxing). Don’t hesitate to plonk a sofa in the middle of your living area to create a divide. Although it’s traditional to place key pieces of furniture against a wall, floating it in the middle can also be very effective. Open bookshelves are another novel solution. You won’t block gorgeous sunlight as it streams through the space, but you will help to form different zones. Try a bookshelf painted in a muted, murky, grey-brown, plus cream and deep red accents throughout the room for a contemporary vibe. You can even create different zones by mixing up the lighting — choose different styles of pendant lights and hang one above the dining table and the other above a coffee table or in the entertainment area.
A DIM BATHROOM
Choose a clean, light shade like Resene Periglacial Blue for walls to invigorate a dim bathroom.
patterned floor — this will only complicate the visual impression of the room. Opt for light or mid-grey tiles or perhaps fresh white floorboards. The former lends a more industrial feel, while white will contribute to a Scandinavian aesthetic. Try to pick a design that has some texture or pattern to it — this will help hide the dust. If you want splashes of colour, keep this for small items, such as a vase or indoor plant. Mint green adds a bit of character, but it’s still a colour that evokes freshness. Likewise, aqua and turquoise also work a treat. Using the gorgeous Glamour wallpaper from Resene as a starting point for the colour scheme and as a feature wall to the left, the setting sparkles with rich blues and oranges, set against the quiet, mysterious grey of a Resene Triple Rakaia wall. The floor is painted in Resene Transmission and the table base is in rich, dusky orange, Resene Ayers Rock. Texture is everything — from the soft gleam of brass to the rich depths of velvet bed linen. This sort of scheme cries out for antiqued metallic finishes. Complete it with a glass votive stencilled in Resene Redemption Blue.
Start with the walls. Choose a clean, light shade such as white with a gentle tint of grey, which pairs well with muted shades; or a pale cream with the gentlest touch of yellow to it, making it an ideal pick if you want a slightly warm neutral that retains a sense of freshness. Once you’ve revamped the colour of the walls, focus on other areas. For instance, there’s no point having a busy

Step 1 Carefully rule out a rectangle in the canvas measuring 140cm x 90cm (or to whatever size you wish). Cut it out. Take doublesided tape and lay it along one edge on un-primed side of the canvas, pressing it firmly into place. Remove backing tape, and fold canvas over with the tape. Press firmly down and smooth out air bubbles. Repeat on remaining three sides, so that all four sides have a folded edge.
Step 2 Turn the mat over so the primed side is facing you and use the masking tape to make a variety of different sized and shaped triangles, all over the canvas. Make sure that all three sides are outlined in masking tape with no gaps so the shape is well defined when you apply the paint. Press the tape down firmly.
Step 3 Give the test pots a good shake
before you open them, and using a mixture of Resene Lickety Split, Resene Kermit, Resene Top Secret and Resene Tutti Frutti, paint the inside of each of the masking tape triangles.
Step 4 Take the three foam dabber brushes and dab them in three different colours of paint, making sure the surface is evenly covered. Use them to make three circles, each smaller than the last, stacked on top of each other to make another tree shape. Remove the masking tape carefully, and do any touch-ups that are necessary with the medium-sized artist’s brush.
Step 5 With the fine brush, use Resene Surf’s Up to make tree trunks and branches, going up the centre of each tree as shown. Once completely dry, brush Resene Aquaclear over the entire surface of the mat to seal and protect your design. You may wish to do a couple of coats.
TOP TIPS ✓ The great thing about masking tape is that it’s moveable — if you don’t like the placement of the triangles, just pull up the tape and re-position it. ✓ We placed the triangles in clusters of uneven numbers covering most of the canvas, but you could do them in rows or just dotted about randomly. ✓ When you start applying the paint, it’s easiest to work from the top edge down so that you don’t smear it. ✓ When you use the foam dabber brushes, get the paint from the inside of the test pot lids — then you have somewhere to rest the brushes when you’re not using them.

The Himalayan Trading Post:
Celebrating 10 years of happiness C elebrating 10 years of ethical trading is no small thing in retail; however Kaari Schlebach, founder of Himalayan Trading Post (HTP), feels a particular sense of fulfilment with how HTP has been supported and developed during its time in the Whangarei CBD. “The motivation to establish HTP has always been to bring as much positive benefit as we can to the community and beyond, to help improve in some way every being we interact with. It is a family style local business where you have the Monks helping in the shop alongside and part of our store manager Monique Danes team.” 10 years passes quickly yet visiting HTP is still like entering a different world. Time slows as you browse the enticingly arranged goods, and an undeniable sense of goodwill exudes from the lovingly handpainted store. Why is this? What imbues HTP such an embracing, calming atmosphere? “We are all very happy here, it’s a great place with great neighbours, landlord, customers, staff and volunteers” says Monique.
HTP is part of a not for profit Charitable Trust that assists the Monks and Nuns of the Tibetan Buddhist Centre Jam Tse Dhargyey Ling of Parakiore Hill in Kamo to offer peaceful teachings and community programs on meditation and happiness. HTP has evolved from a small merchandising stall that accompanied the Monks while on a NZ wide Sand Mandala tour, through a couple of other CBD locations, to its current premises on Walton and Cameron Streets corner. HTP values the importance of the working relationships it has with all its suppliers, “We feel we represent our customers when we are travelling to purchase products from the different countries of the Himalayan regions and therefore we do our best to know the true story of the origin of the products and how the purchase may affect the lives of all the people involved. We hand choose our products for Northlanders to enjoy, looking at every aspect of every purchase; we take time to investigate, we are cautious, and above all we strive to make ethical choices. “ In addition to its broad selection of clothing and
giftware HTP currently may have the largest selection of singing bowls in New Zealand, each being unique in sound, tone and design. Alongside these harmonic bowls you will find beautiful soft Indian cotton scarves, Nepalese-made NZ-wool
mittens, wrist-warmers, beanies, gloves and slippers: and of course HTPs own gorgeous range of hand-crafted and designed silver jewellery. With the future looking rosy, Kaari and her welcoming team invite you to join them in
celebration: treasures abound in Whangarei’s most colourful shop — where you can be confident that every penny you spend is finding its way to a truly worthwhile cause.
Come and explore our fabulous store packed with beautiful clothing; homewares; candles; jewellery; Buddhist books, CD’s and Prayer Flags; Himalayan salt and salt lamps; mobiles, wind chimes, fairy lights, delicious perfume oils, essential oils and other health & beauty products.

NEED TO KNOW Price: Honda CRV Sport NT, $54,990 Dimensions: Length, 4585mm; width, 1820mm; height, 1685mm Configuration: Four-cylinder transverse, four-wheel-drive, 2354cc, 140kW, 222Nm, five-speed automatic
by ROSS KIDDIE
Performance: 0-100km/h, 9sec
I
t was nearly 20 years ago when Honda introduced its sport utility vehicle – the CRV. CRV is a common abbreviation for compact recreational vehicle, but by all accounts it is what we have largely termed an SUV. The CRV is mid-size and it is still true to the original concept, even though it is now well through its fourth lifecycle. Honda has just refreshed the CRV which suggests it is on track for another generational change in a couple of years’ time. For 2015 the CRV gets a mild facelift up front with the inclusion of daytime running lights, there are bigger wheels, and it gets a heap of fitment inclusions, most for safety. The test car was badged Sport NT, and it is the range-topping model within the line-up. It sits at $54,990, bearing in mind that the range starts at $38,990 for a two-wheel-drive, 2-litre variant. For its price the Sport NT represents amazing value. The level of fitment is way too comprehensive to list in detail, but major items include full leather trim (heated seats up front and electrically adjustable), satellite navigation, active cruise control, dual-zone air conditioning, and electric sunroof. For safety the list is very comprehensive, new features include collision mitigation braking and lane watch camera which is linked to lane keep assist and lane departure warning, these features on top of what are now deemed to be usual safety inclusions. Under the bonnet sits Honda’s tried and trusted four-cylinder, twin-camshaft engine of 2354cc.

HONDA CRV SPORT NT
Amazing value for top of the range
It is rated with 140kW and 222Nm of torque. As we have come to expect from Honda, it is an engine which is quite peaky at the top end. If you take into account that maximum power sits at 7000rpm and peak torque doesn’t arrive until 4000rpm, there’s a belief that it needs to work hard to achieve results.
However, that’s not quite how it operates, the engine management protocols are structured so that the engine doesn’t work unnecessarily hard. Especially so if you use the economical approach, encouraged by the inclusion of a button which deliberately numbs the engine down to an
operating manner which is a little lazier, yet far more efficient. According to Honda, the CRV in four-wheel-drive form will use fuel at the rate of 8.7-litres per 100km (33mpg). That fits well with the fuel usage readout which was constantly hovering around 9.4l/100km (30mpg).

Drive flows through a five-speed automatic gearbox. Shifts are smooth, kick-downs are quick and the ratios are structured so that engine load is minimal. And, of course, the 2015 CRV gets steering wheel-mounted paddles for driver involvement. However, the CRV is all about practicality. With just 170mm of ground clearance it couldn’t be described as an off-roader, but it is what has loosely been termed a soft-roader and is capable in low grip situations. I experienced a long section of road works when I was out testing, so in order not to get the vehicle overly dirty I ventured along a ditch to a dry, clean surface. Grip wasn’t lost in the transition, but it was a bit of a test for four-wheeldrive and suspension ability. The spring and damper rates are structured for comfort. Most critics will tell you that double wishbone suspension offers the best occupant comfort, the CRV’s rear end has that type. On-road handling is far from compromised. Honda has done a lot of work with steering and suspension settings for the facelift model, it feels very car-like to drive with composed body balance. You can guarantee Honda is working tirelessly on the next generation CRV. In the interim, the fresh model now in showrooms will satisfy. Sales are still buoyant for CRV which is recognition for how well it has stood the test of time.

I’m on the home stretch Wife, mother, journalist ... PHILIPPA MANNAGH reveals the highs and lows, and the challenges in life ...
I
t was time to kick my own butt. It’s now the thick of winter and fitness wise, I have felt like i’m going backwards. This is a dangerous place for me. One sunny afternoon I decided to pull out my favourite coloured pens (stationary obsessed), a glass of “afternoon” wine and a massive piece of paper to stick to the fridge. Mapping out term three, I realistically added the fitness goals that I want to be seeing for myself again. Little Miss Fit began this journey and she is not going to give up! The finish line for my personal challenge is October and with this spring month fast approaching, I have calculated how many weeks are left and what I need to do. I firmly believe that if you
can get your thoughts to paper a transformation can happen. Don’t lock it all away in your head… get it out and start visualising your end result. I have now set aside days to fit in different types of exercise with a big focus on food these coming months. I am starting small again, a brisk walk around the block is 10 points! Winning. Recently, I stumbled across the Viking Diet and I have to say that it makes a lot of sense to me. Move over Mr Paleo. Oily fish, red meat only a couple of times a week, lots of fruit, vegetables and grains mixed in with plenty of outdoor time. My meals this month will revolve around routine and
planning. A soup focus twice a week, a Sunday night roast like the olden days and no bread until the weekend. Saturday… anything goes. You have got to have one of these days, usually it makes you realise how crap an “anything” day can make you feel once your body is healthy again. I am also trying for 3litres of water a day but the frosts have taken with them my love of the stuff. I am struggling with this. Early nights, epsom salt baths, belly breathing, positive thoughts, yoga and great company are the keys getting me through this winter. What are your secrets? I would love to hear from you. Credit card pitfalls on holiday DIANNE HARRIS is a budget advisor for the Anglican Care Centre
We went on holiday a few weeks back, needed to hire a car and check into a hotel. What happens when we pass over our credit card? When the person at the desk swipes your card, the bank is electronically asked to “block”* or reserve part of your line of credit to cover the expected cost before you go out and use it for other vacation purchases. At a hotel they often put a hold of $100-$150 (this is covering incidental expenses that may incur e.g. phone calls, mini bar purchases etc). When hiring a car they will take into consideration the cost of rental, petrol and sometimes insurance. There is nothing wrong in them doing this the only issue comes if, when you leave on your holiday, your credit card is getting close to its limit and this block means your credit limit has been met. *An authorisation (block) on a credit card works in the same way as a debit hold on a transactional account. Once the credit card transaction is authorised the funds are held aside until the transaction is presented by the merchant or for a maximum of 5 calendar days Make sure you contact your bank at least 2 -3 weeks before you go travelling to advise your travel plans. The bank
computer could put a freeze on your card should it see funds being removed from another country – this is done for your safety but can cause unpleasant moments should you be trying to pay for a product and your card is frozen. Pay your credit card bill before you leave therefore knowing funds are available, also check your credit card expiry date. Take back-up funds in other forms like cash, eftpos card, or even a second credit card Find out the banks that are a Global Alliance Bank with your bank to avoid fees. Note: Apologies - In Last month’s article on Twins acknowledgment to Dustin Rowles for some quotes was left off.
RECIPE: This is a tried and true recipe definitely worth a try, great in kids lunchbox or as a snack. Apricot Macadamia bliss balls: 300g dried apricots 110g toasted unsalted macadamias (I have halved this as macadamias are expensive) 1 tbsp coconut oil (I used butter instead) pinch of cinnamon pinch of salt 1 tbsp golden syrup Gather all ingredients. Combine the apricots, nuts, oil, cinnamon, salt and syrup in a food processor or blender. Blitz until well combined. Roll one tablespoon of the mixture into a ball and set aside on a plate or tray lined with baking paper. Repeat with the rest of the mixture then place in the fridge or freezer to firm up. Keeps 1 week in fridge or up to 3 months in freezer. You can get up to 26 balls from this mixture. — recipe from Kidspot NZ
