I
s it those beautiful sky-high heels that you’re not sure you’d be able to walk in? A gorgeous sequin covered dress that says I’m fabulous, but people might look at you? That amazing evening gown that you love, but have nowhere to wear it to? How about that beautiful fragrance that just came out but you already have enough perfumes? I know there are those things that you have hidden at the back of the closet, that you love and can’t bear to part with but just don’t wear either? Maybe it’s not an outfit or an item; maybe what you really want but turn away from, is an experience? Something you’re dying to do but someone you know won’t approve? Somewhere you’ve always wanted to go, but decide something else was more important? Are you stuck in a job but dream about another, more exciting career? I say ignore the fear of other people’s opinions, and JUST DO IT. If it makes you happy, (and it’s legal) go out and do it. Smile while your doing and it’ll make someone else happy too. If you want to wear it; make an occasion to wear it, invite your partner or girls friends out to dinner to give you an excuse to wear the heels, sequined evening gown and new perfume. Don’t let the things you love be your best kept secret.

Cowboy Junkies ride into town C
owboy Junkies Antiques and Collectibles have moved in at 2 Okara Drive, on the roundabout near Countdown. Hamish Wain and his partner Lisa Heenan have converted the building to mimic a well-loved villa stuffed with a cornucopia of treasures. Browsing is encouraged, and it’s easy to lose an hour wandering through the rooms full of paintings, including minor masters and Oceania, furniture, china and glass, silverware, metalware, jewellery, taxidermy, lighting, collectibles, toys, militaria, vinyl records, and more. Such an interesting shop is bound to have an intriguing character at the helm. Hamish doesn’t disappoint. “I left Whangarei on a tuna boat when I was 18. I jumped off in Greymouth and lived on the West Coast for 13 years, then went to Art School in Nelson, from where I was asked to run the art department of The World of Wearable Arts show. After that I joined The Lord of the Rings crew as a prop maker, and then set builder on several Peter Jackson movies. I’ve worked in various roles since, including 4 years in Auckland working as a set decorator on Spartacus.” That explains the amazing renovation on the Cowboy Junkies building. And, like every good movie, there’s a love interest. “I’ve settled back here now to be with my girlfriend, who was my first kiss at our 3rd form social. We met at school, but have only seen each other twice since then … until I was working

on the set of The Hobbit and made contact. Since then we’ve travelled through 7 countries together. And now we’re staying put here.” Hamish has personally acquired everything in the shop. He’s intrigued by the stories that accompany items. Some are poignant, many are about letting go. “It’s also intriguing to wonder how these artefacts arrived in NZ in the first place,” he says. “The only thing here that wasn’t bought in NZ is the Mongolian saddle that I brought back from Kazakhstan. I was working on a movie there. And yes, it’s for sale!” he adds. “This is not a museum. I love it when people walk out of here with a package under their arm and a smile on their face.” Cowboy Junkies – named after the Canadian country blues band – is open 6 days a week. Whatever your budget, there’s sure to be something you’ll want to take home to your own ranch.

People make up the framework of Dawn’s life and photos by LEIGH BRAMWELL
D
espite the long list of awards and quite a few letters after her name, Whangarei photographer Dawn Dutton doesn’t feel famous. But that doesn’t mean she’s not proud to have won two Westpac Northland business awards, 20-odd New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography Iris awards over the past four years, and this year the prestigious title of Master of Photography. The Epson/NZIPP Iris Awards attract hundreds of entries from New Zealand and overseas, and each year Dawn enters a selection of her favourite images. It’s a way of benchmarking herself, and her ongoing success makes it clear where this self-effacing 38 year old sits on the photographic career ladder. Dawn won four silver and five bronze medals in the 2015 awards held last month with images of Northland weddings, plus a series of portraits showing the "innocence and loss of one woman from age five to 75". People are Dawn’s forte. Ask her to photograph a landscape and she’s stumped, but put a person in there, and she could play around for ages. She loves working with people and it shows. “People — all people — have the most amazing stories to tell and when you get it right, it’s spectacular,” she says. She says she’s had a camera in her hand for the age of eight – in those days a simple Kodak Instamatic. But photography was not her first career path. She trained as a paramedic but she and her husband had premature twins who were very sick and she couldn’t be away from home. However she took photographs as a passion, not charging for her work, until after her third child was born and her husband suggested she make a business of

PEOPLE — ALL PEOPLE — HAVE THE MOST AMAZING STORIES TO TELL AND WHEN YOU GET IT RIGHT, IT’S SPECTACULAR it.
“It’s worked out so well,” she says. “My family comes first and the business works around that.” Her success is the culmination of many years of hard work, and this year has possibly been on of the busiest. “I did have a plan for the year and so far I’ve ticked pretty much all of the boxes. I wanted to be one of Northland’s leading wedding photographers, I wanted a studio at home and we
built that, and I wanted to get my Masters.” Ask her how it feels to have that title and Dawn says it still makes her feel giggly and a bit tearful. “I don’t feel famous but I do feel I am the most awarded wedding photographer in Northland.” She acknowledges that she now needs some new boxes to tick and it’s in her business plan to take some time to sit down and work that out next year.

“I was a finalist in the Auckland/Northland Photographer of the Year, and one of my goals will be to win it next year,” she says. One of her goals is to explore the possibility of taking on a couple of like-minded photographers to work alongside her, a move which she feels would enable her to take her work further afield. Recently she took the official school photographs at Whangaruru School, and that’s planted a seed.
Come in and explore your local ONESTOP fashion boutique. We stock a premium collection of high quality garments and dresses to ‘WOW’ your special day.
“Whangaruru School hadn’t had any school photographs taken for 10 years, because it was so far away that nobody wanted to bother going there for the job. When the principal rang me she said I was the last phone call she was going to make. I think that’s very sad. If I had a couple of people working with me we could do that. Those kids deserve to have a school photo. Everyone deserves to have beautiful images. It’s history and if you don’t record it, it’s lost.”

ABOVE AND BELOW: Folk meets utility meets glam in Karen Walker’s Star City collection.
HE CITY of dreams, the city that never sleeps, the city of fashion . . . and also the city that Karen Walker feels completely at home in! New York Fashion Week descended and Kiwi Karen Walker took to the runway alongside global fashion giants, propelling her brand and New Zealand into the spotlight once again. Karen Walker’s show stirred up a media frenzy with controversial fan The Fat Jew (aka Josh Ostrovsky) sitting front row sporting Karen’s most popular sunglasses in pink, an all-white tracksuit and with his sidekick pooch, Toast (who has 279,000 followers on Instagram). He was quoted as saying “this show is always my fave”. Karen Walker’s collection was based on outer space and Star City, a highly secretive astronaut-training base founded in Moscow. Karen Walker said “folk meets utility meets glam” was the inspiration behind her juxtaposition of traditional Russian folksy style and space science. Starry motifs featured on knit sweaters and bold dresses, while gold leather and hardware, such as zips and metal clasps, gave a futuristic feel to a show that was colourful, bold and fun. Uber-cool fashion label Opening Ceremony was a show not to be missed, with front row eye candy including Laverne Cox, looking a vision in a fitting caramel dress, and Victoria and David Beckham looking not too shabby, either! The brand turned a gritty Wall Street venue into a greenfingered paradise. Ballet dancers mixing with the models turned the standard fashion show into something more theatrical, which was great for weary fashion editors at the end of a long day! Key looks from the runway for next season included mid-
David Beckham and Vogue editor Anna Wintour watch the catwalk. blue flared jeans, as a must-have winter staple, and strong colours like rust. For her show on Sunday Victoria Beckham wore her signature uniform of head-to-toe black, but this was a complete contrast to her collection, which was a riot of colour and prints: check, hibiscus flowers, yellow, cobalt and pumpkin. The show consisted of knitted dresses in gingham and a palette of clarets and khakis, loose chiffon dresses and culottes. Other elements of the collection include slip dresses in crushed satin, tunic dresses, boxy jackets in leather and kitten heels. “I am in a really good place and you can see that in the collection,” said Beckham. The success of her label has rumours circulating of a potential buyout from a fashion conglomerate. Fashion superhero
Alexander Wang went against the norm of design inspiration and references, instead stating there was no particular influence for the collection, which was more about “nice clothes”. In his first collection since the July announcement of leaving fashion house Balenciaga, models sported hooded tops and sweaters inspired by American footballs. The overall feel is what has made Alexander Wang one of the world’s leading fashion labels — slouchy, cool, off-duty and a style that never tries too hard. With after-parties galore (including Marc Jacobs), champagne, celebrities and fabulous outfits, there’s no time to be tired — and I’ll be there next year! ■ Rodelle Payne is a fashionwriter and owner of Sisters & Co, Mount Maunganui

Botox Combat wrinkles at any age When is the best age to stop wrinkles, and start Botox? There’s no right or wrong time to have Botox , and it’s actually more common than you might think. Many of us have considered it, but have put it off because of the stigma, lack of information, or are concerned about when to have it. So, we’re breaking it all down, and giving you all the info on exactly when’s a good time to consider having cosmetic injections, and if they are right for you
IN YOUR 20’s
Although lines and wrinkles are not usually a concern when you’re in your twenties, Botox® can be used as a preventative measure to help slow the signs of ageing. As we all know, it’s easier to prevent wrinkles, than try and correct them later! “Treating areas before lines and wrinkles develop, relaxes the active muscles before allowing possible wrinkles to form” explains Lisa Russell, Caci Training Academy. Fair and sun sensitive skin types are often good candidates for Botox®, they’re more prone to sun damage and environmental ageing which causes premature wrinkles. Also, if you’re an overly expressive speaker, Botox® will help minimise movement in these highly active areas, to prevent fine lines developing.
IN YOUR 30’s
During our 30’s, collagen and new skin cell production slows, skin becomes thinner and signs of ageing start to appear. The forehead wrinkles, crows’ feet and frown lines are often more pronounced because of constant movement of the skin. If you’ve noticed your makeup creasing and sitting in the fine frown lines, then Botox® might be right, it will help smooth out the area and reduce the fine lines that have developed, while also preventing them from getting worse.
IN YOUR 40’s
In our 40’s loss of volume and firmness can occur; this is when Botox® and fillers can help rejuvenate our skin, by adding volume, reducing lines, and
correcting the signs of aging. Botox® can help soften, but may not completely eliminate them, this is when filler can assist, by adding volume under the skin to smooth out the canvas and give more youthful appearance. Crow’s feet are one of the most commonly treated areas, reducing the lines around the eyes can make you look more
refreshed, more youthful, and also make your eyes appear larger. ■ To have any specific Botox® questions addressed in absolute confidence, or for more information on the cost of Botox® treatments, have a free consultation at Caci Whangarei, 0800 458 458.

Vitamin C can help body prepare for viral attack
Hey! It’s time to feel good!
Herbalist LES helps address health issues the natural way There is an outbreak of chicken pox at my daughter’s school. She is 7 years old and I want to be prepared if she should contract it. Any help please? Chickenpox is caused by the herpes virus, Varicella-zoster, and it is highly contagious. The symptoms you need to watch for can range from a spiked temperature, headache, lethargy, muscle pain, loss of appetite, and of course the dreaded spots. The rash appears initially as being flat and pinkish-red in colour, and then forms clusters of tiny pimplelike blisters. Typically the rash begins on the chest and back then spreads to the limbs, and can even appear on the face, head, neck, and genitals. A child infected with chickenpox is considered to be contagious from up to two days before the appearance of the first symptoms until every single blister is dry and covered with a crusty scab. At this point, it is a good idea to start with an immune supportive approach — that way your daughter’s body should cope well in preventing or dealing with a viral attack. Sambucol for Kids is a great formula to give her and it also contains vitamin C which has been shown to help with herpesrelated outbreaks. Available from: www.pharmacydirect.co.nz tel: 0800 742 762 The main issue with little

ones and chickenpox is to prevent the picking and scratching of spots, since this can lead to infection and scarring. Citrus fruits and tomatoes have been shown to have a stimulating effect on any rash or blisters during an outbreak caused by a strain of herpes virus, so avoid these until she is in the clear. Chickenpox generally only lasts from one to two weeks and is usually free of complications. Your best bet to prevent the picking of itchy spots is to keep your daughter’s nails short and clean, and if she is subconsciously scratching or just can’t help herself, you may have to convince her to wear cotton gloves over her hands particularly at night. Themba herbal skin cream is brilliant for helping with chickenpox spots – it relieves itching, encourages healing and helps to prevent scarring. Use at least twice daily on the spots, more often if necessary.
To soothe itching, bathe your daughter in a shallow tepid bath infused with organic oatmeal (in a sock and held under the taps whilst the bath is running) Another effective bath for chickenpox is brown vinegar. It will relieve skin irritation and help heal the lesions and prevent scarring. Simply add one-half cup of brown vinegar to lukewarm bath water, and soak in the bath for about 10 to 15 minutes. Home-made carrot and coriander soup is highly beneficial in the treatment of chickenpox. It is rich in antioxidants that help in the healing process. IT’S BEEN another week of sickness in our home so when I decided to clean out a cupboard and came across a self-help document called Changing the Negative Thoughts in My Head, it seemed to have arrived at just the right time. I thought I’d share some tips from it in the hope of helping others to feel more positive about life now that spring is here. Increase positive thinking Make a list of your positive attributes, attach it to your mirror and read it aloud whenever you see it. For example: “I am a good mother”; “I work hard”.
1
2
Decrease negative thoughts Negative self-talk is usually untrue and makes you feel bad. Whenever you become aware of it, stop and replace the negative thought with a positive statement about yourself.
3
Watch out for “shoulds” These are generally unreasonable, irrational demands we place on
ourselves. Whenever you catch yourself saying, “I should . . . ”, substitute one of these categories: “I want to do this” or “This is not a priority”. Focus on the priorities. Continually reminding yourself of things you “should” do serves no useful purpose.
4
Notice what you accomplish Be aware of what you do during the day and note down all the things you achieve. For example: “I got up early”; “I did four loads of laundry”.
5
Set yourself up for success Set realistic goals. If you set goals that are too high you will disappoint yourself, causing your selfesteem to fall. If you set modest goals then you can reward yourself when you reach them and enjoy the processwithout having to worry about failing.
6
Be kind to yourself Remember that change takes time.

F YOU are looking for a way to brighten your child’s bedroom, this DIY project is an easy way to add a pop of colour. Using just a few materials, you’re limited only by your imagination and embroidery thread colours — of which there are hundreds! You will need: 1 x A4 wood block (scrap wood is ok too) Bag of small nails 1 x embroidery thread of your choice Printed A4 image to use as a template — We found all these supplies at Mitre 10 Mega and Spotlight. 1. Centre your template and begin hammering in nails. 2. Once you have completed the outside edge (don’t line up the nails across from each other as this will make your final image too neat), tear the paper out from underneath 3. Go nuts with embroidery
thread, criss-crossing and wrapping around nails to change direction. 4. For a sharp finish, go around
the edge of the image. TIP: Allow at least 45 minutes to get the nails in, it takes longer than you think!

What are the main colour trends for this summer season and why? A new colour trend coming through at present are the new fashion pastels. Soft pastel colours have been swirling around our homes for a few years now, with icy gelato tones and lolly colours. This season pastels are growing up. They’ve moved from those watery looks to a more muddied, dusky style. It’s a more grown-up, sophisticated palette. And we’re using a variety of them in one room, not just a touch here and there. With this new approach to pastel schemes, soft neutrals have a strong role to play, sitting happily alongside pastels. We’re seeing paint colours making their way into flooring so that becomes a part of the paint palette. Ceilings are also becoming a popular canvas for colour. Traditional ceilings have been white but there is a trend to continuing the wall colour on to the ceiling for a cocoon of colour or a striking, bold contrast.
Ceilings tend to be expansive, uncluttered spaces and are often an easier choice for a feature space than the feature walls of the past. Many rooms don’t suit feature walls because there is so much furniture, artwork and other obstructions that the feature wall has to compete with. In those spaces more decorators are opting to take the colour to the ceiling instead. Outside, the black story is still strong, with black wood stains a particular favourite, often complemented by a striking bold front door or garden feature. And “greige” (grey beige) is the new beige inside and out. Exterior neutrals are tending towards greys and blackened offwhites, away from the beiges and the creams that preceded them.

And wallpaper trends? From digital prints to textured wall coverings, wallpaper designs for 2015/16 are hotting up. Plain-papered walls are passe. Today’s selection of wallpapers is more diverse and creative than ever. Think eye-popping patterns, hand-drawn illustrations and bold hues in a number of styles — vintage, retro, classical, floral, new vogue, Pasifika, Kiwiana, industrial chic and contemporary luxury. These days we’re spoilt for choice and the sky, quite literally, is the limit. There’s neutral, bright, patterned, plain

Even if something isn’t strictly “on trend”, there are still normally a good range of choices with traditional and classic options. No matter what home style you want, there is a wallpaper to suit. The new frontier for wallpaper is design your own, with programmes like Resene WallPrint. This allows you to tailor your image to fit your feature wall.

Are feature walls still a ‘thing’? Some early adopters of the wallpaper feature walls a few years ago have now moved on to colour blocking their wall. Done with paint and masking tape, it enables a custom, usually geometricstyle design to be created and is very popular.

What are the main colour trends for this summer season and why? People seem more comfortable with the use of bold colour. In fabrics, lime is
coming through, replacing chartreuse. Darker blues are more prominent, such as an indigo ink, beautiful rich golds . . . and purple is the new pink. It is important to remember, though, that the colour must work with the home and the people living there. We don’t always have to follow the fashion colours! However, using colour can inspire and brighten a room dramatically.

And wallpaper trends? Wallpaper is still a very popular choice to add texture and interest or give the room a bold statement.

Are feature walls still a “thing”? Feature walls are not as popular now. We have always liked to take the room as a whole, not just focus on one wall.
4
What type of floor coverings are trending? Tiles are still a very popular and there are some amazing tiles out now. Carpets, vinyl timber and cork are also good options depending on where they go and the room’s use.

Conifer comeback by CANDACE STEVENSON
Once the most dominant land plants of the Mesozoic era, these cone bearing seed plants, dating back to over 300 million years old need a renewed reputation. I want to encourage you all when
planning the garden to consider the trustworthy, bold, strong, minimal maintenance conifers as the bones of your design. Let them be the screening, shelter and framework to your garden rooms long after the bulbs and annuals have gone, skeletal trees have littered the lawns and flowering shrubs need their heads cut back.

You little beautie! by DEBBIE OLDFIELD Roses are coming out of hibernation at the moment and are a plant that should be considered for your garden as they flower through spring, summer and autumn with a bit of care and attention. They can need a bit of work but are well worth the effort. Varieties we have in stock at the moment are: Iceberg Rose: This variety has become very popular due to its

produced throughout the season. This rose is highly resistant to disease so is a good one for the gardener who doesn’t like to spray much. Grows between 2-4m tall and 1.8m wide 1L grade $6.50 each
Roses respond really well to pruning. They flower well on the new growth that pruning stimulates and pruning keeps them neat and tidy. Pruning is of course done in winter when the rose is dormant. What parts to prune? Begin by cutting out any weak, spindly, crossed or dead stems. Then, if it’s an older rose, look at the stems and remove some of the oldest. This can be done by sawing the old, dark brown stems off cleanly at their base. Cut the remaining stems back to a few buds above where last year’s growth began. Prune so that the top bud is an outward facing bud. New growth will come from this bud, so it’s important that it heads out rather than back into the plant. Now stand back and take a good look at the rose. Is the remaining wood healthy and vigorous? Is the rose bush nice and open so that the sun and air can get right into it? If the answer is yes then congratulations – you have a well pruned rose bush.

Enhance your entranceway L
ooking to add a wow factor to the welcome area of your home? With it being the first point of contact into your abode, it is important to make a good impression in your entranceway. Defining the space with flair and imagination will make a lasting impression, which can be achieved through the use of a bright or vibrant colour. Think feature wall, statement art piece, or funky furniture. Consider engaging visitors immediately by creating an eye-catching
wall display, or by hanging a mirror, which will catch the light and bring the sun into a darker hallway. A mirror also works to create the illusion of extra space by visually expanding a contained area. Choose a style that matches your overall de´cor. Be mindful not to over do your entranceway, as simple is most often the most effective when it comes to this area. Keep it clutter free and inviting to make your visitors feel welcome into your home.

The phrase ‘Home is where the heart is’ invokes a feeling of a house where you feel comfortable to relax and be yourself – a concept Sarah Burrows combines in her work as an interior designer of kitchens and bathrooms. Sarah has invested time, energy and money into developing both the personal and professional facets of herself in order to provide a distinct service where she designs a home environment that expresses the essence of the homeowner. “I love finding the gold in people – capturing their personalities and transforming a space into a practical area that personifies the guardians of the environment. The importance of not only being, but creating and living in an environment that brings out the best in you is crucial; something I didn’t really appreciate until my fathers funeral just over a year ago. Until then, I only saw myself as my fathers daughter. His passing helped me to see my own strengths. My father was a part of me, but I had my own identity and needed to draw on my value to create a life that made the most of those assets. The realisation was like someone had drawn

back the curtains to let the light in the room; giving me a whole new perspective on life. I began to see the bigger picture - a world outside of myself. Seeing the world through a new lens helped me appreciate my surroundings and the hidden treasures of the people in my life. Moreover, I learned to trust myself. Trusting my intuition is what brought me to Whangarei. Bizarre as it sounds, I had a dream that told me to move to the North Island. I was living in Christchurch at the time. Fortunately, my husband Ritchie listened and was swayed by the conviction of my words without reverting to his incredible practical, rational self! He looked online and found a job that was due to close in 24 hours – and duly applied. The rest as they say is history, which is ironical as he’s now a History teacher at Whangarei Boys High school.” Initially Sarah travelled back and forth to Christchurch to maintain her client base, then networking in person and virtually to establish connections with builders, tilers joiners and soft furnishers in Northland. Now she’s firmly established her own practice in Whangarei with
great connections to people in the industry; the likes of RMC Design, The Tile Warehouse, Bella Homes and Shelley McKinnon – whose caliber of support, work ethics and level of service have helped lift her game up a notch – enabling her to win the SMEG Kitchen and Bathroom Design award in 2014. Sarah is looking forward to a 6 week OE over Christmas to Europe with her husband that’ll fill both their tanks – his love of history and her love of design. In April she’s off to Milan with friend and colleague, Jillian from Guyco to a furniture fair where she’ll meet the designers and get to see them creating and installing their works of art. “My travels will help me discover a whole new world and deepen my connection to the beauty all around us. A beauty that I’m privileged to be able to use to connect people to an environment that brings out the gold in them - a sanctuary they can enjoy because there’s no place like home to be yourself.”

I
wanted to check in this month to remind you to connect with life itself, your loved ones and the simple delights in life. A couple of things have happened in my world recently, that have brought me back to a sobering reality and a slap in the face refresher course on what is important and why we do what we do. When was the last time you turned your phone off and ran across a field with your child? Drank in that heavenly giggle... When was the last time you rang a friend out of the blue and chatted over a cup of tea? When was the last time you told your loved ones how much you loved them? Life changes. We never know what is around the corner or, if our

well worn path will suddenly change route. As busy as it is running a business and juggling family life, remember to book in "life time". Plain and simple. Our lives are so fast paced now that even breathing is a practised exercise. Over the weekend our family walked the loop, indulged in an ice-cream, hubby took Miss 8 out for a bike ride through the bush. We held a movie night in the lounge and engaged with each other … mindfully. The kids built huts, rode bikes and focused on thankfulness. There are different ways to be present and sometimes we think we are doing a great job, but our minds are often sidetracked, one eye on technology and one eye on reality. Like taking your car for a tune up, look around and "tune up" how you are connecting with those you love. Don't let it take a fright of a situation to make you realise again, what you have right in front of you.
How are you educating your children? As parents what advice are you giving your children? Do you mention money? Do you pass on the advice given by your parents which most likely went along the lines – “Money doesn’t grow on trees you know, if you want something you have to save” Or is it a topic that you never discuss? Dare I say it but, Shame on you? As parents, I feel it is our responsibility to teach our children the fundamentals when it comes to money and how it works. One of the best ways of doing this is by example. Talk with them about how an eftpos card works, how the ATM machine operates, take them into a bank, show them the importance of working with cash, make them aware of how important it is to have money put away for emergencies. Then –watch them grow, learn for themselves, make
RECIPE Athenian Mince 500g mince, 1/2 tsp mixed herbs, 1 onion, diced, 50g butter, 50g grated cheese, pinch nutmeg, 500g cooked potatoes, 400g chopped tomatoes, salt & pepper, 2 C milk, 1 large egg (separated), 50g flour Fry mince in oil over a high heat, add onion, stir in tomatoes, herbs and salt & pepper. Simmer uncovered for ten minutes. In a separate pot, melt butter, remove from heat and add flour and gradually add milk, return to the heat and stir continually. Boil for 1 minute until thick. Remove from heat and add egg yolk, cheese and nutmeg. Slice cooked potato. In a casserole dish, put 1/2 of mince, then 1/2 the sliced potatoes and 1/2 the sauce, then the last of the mince, the last of the sliced potatoes. Whisk the egg white until stiff and add to the remaining sauce. Spread over the top. Bake 45min at 180C.

Something for everyone A Brief History of Seven Killings, by Marlon James, Oneworld Publications, $24.95 The sordid story of the attempted assassination of Bob Marley in December 1976 and more widely, the story of Jamaica within a world of conflict in the 1970s and early 80s. This chronicles the lives of a slew of unforgettable characters – from slum kids to drug lords to the CIA. Despite the title, it isn’t brief, and neither are there only seven killings; so not for the faint-hearted. But it is gripping storytelling. Told in multiple voices, this is a brave and haunting work. Shortlisted for the Man Booker 2015.
The Martian, by Andy Weir, Del Rey Ebury Publishing, $24.95 Software engineer Andy Weir originally mise and story, a thoroughly interesting character and impressive technical know-how, meticulously researched. A freak accident leaves astronaut Mark Watney stranded alone on the surface of Mars. Having no alternative he must duct-tape and jerry-rig all the equipment and supplies he has available to him to serve his desperate survival needs. Intense and full of suspense, unashamedly geeky SciFi.
Guinness World Records 2016, $49.95 In this age of information overload, it’s all too easy to make the assumption that people are fully served in their information quests by Doctor Google. That’s just not so. If I want to check a fact, I’ll indeed consult; but if I want to be absolutely baffled by people’s crazy, random interests and abilities, then I need look no further than this, the world’s best-selling annual for the past 60 years. 250+ pages packed full of records, images and mind-boggling trivia.
Rock War, by Robert Muchamore, Hachette Publishing, $19.95 The stories of three aspiring musicians, auditioning to appear on a reality TV show. All three characters are genuinely talented, but that’s where the similarities end. Summer’s dealing with a sickly nan and living in poverty; Dylan’s wealth, on the other hand, means he’s dealing with competing pressures; while Jay’s ambitions are constantly being stifled by a chaotic and violent family life. It’s a pacy read and doesn’t shy away from some of the important issues facing today’s teens.
Kiwi Dogs and Their People, by David Darcy, Murdoch Books, $29.95 Author-photographer David Darcy travelled the length and breadth of New Zealand to meet up with a whole heap of fanatical people and their dogs – hunting dogs, herding dogs, sled dogs, search-and-rescue dogs, dogs who’ve themselves been rescued, dog trial champions, companion dogs, pampered cityslicker dogs. He sets his portraits against the varied and stunning backdrops New Zealand is known for, and these beautiful images show just how passionately we feel about our canine companions.
Feel the Fear (Ruby Redfort #4), by Lauren Child, HarperCollins Publishing, $17.95 Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to get your hands on this book and read it! The fourth instalment in the life of 13-year-old Ruby Redfort, who works as an undercover agent. This time she must pit her wits against a seemingly invisible villain. High octane throughout, with cracking good codes to puzzle over, ingenious gadgets and a complex storyline featuring numerous sub-plots and hidden twists. Lauren Child first introduced
the character of Ruby Redfort in her Clarice Bean novels. Like all compelling characters, she demanded her own exhilarating stories be told. Dang, she’s cool! How to Fight a Dragon’s Fury, by Cressida Cowell, Hodder Books, $24.95 Hiccup, “a skinny runnerbean of a boy”, is about to be crowned King of the Westerlands and save humanity; when Alvin the Treacherous (“the clue’s in the name”) appears on the scene, claiming the crown for himself. “You see, it just got worse again less than five minutes into the story” is the apt heading of Chapter 2, and it’s all downhill and dastardly from there! When Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III and his dragon Toothless first appeared in How to Train Your Dragon, we were enthralled. Since then, these anarchic tales have captured the imaginations of children and adults alike. How to Fight a Dragon’s Fury is full of smoke and fire, laughs, love and honour. A triumphant finale, read this and you’ll be unable to wipe the smile from your face for weeks, promise! Dragons! (Dragon Knight #4), by Kyle Mewburn and Donovan Bixley, Scholastic, $11.95 An outrageously funny medieval adventure for new readers. Young Merek is following his dream to become a knight and must learn the timehonoured skill of falconry. Trouble is, the skies seem to be full of dragons. Merek must use all his shape-shifting skills to avoid disaster. This is a racy, humorous read, full of sound-effects and hilarious illustrations that will win over even the most reluctant new reader. Perfectly paced, the story moves along hummingly, all the while informing of other tangential details, often superfluous but hey, scintillating if you’re an ADHD seven-year-old. Clever, very clever.

He needed a tune for his words, so he put a notice in the paper advertising a competition. John Joseph Woods, teacher, principal and part-time musician, won the competition. Warm, witty illustrations and lively verse tell how Woods was inspired to compose his winning tune, and how he later conducted a choir of 600 children to sing the anthem for then Premier Sir George Grey – in a woolshed! (Now, if only our flag debate could be resolved this simply.) A topical picture book for all New Zealanders, the music and all five verses, in both our spoken languages, are reproduced at the end of the book. The Day the Crayons Came Home, by Drew Daywalt and Oliver Jeffers, HarperCollins Children’s Books, $24.95 A companion book, every bit as funny as The Day the Crayons Quit. Having soothed the hurt feelings of the last group of crayons -- who staged a strike to bring attention to Duncan’s unthinking treatment of their abilities, -- Duncan must now solve the problems of a whole new gang of crayons, needing to be rescued. There is Maroon Crayon, who was lost beneath the sofa cushions and broken in two after Dad sat on him; and neglected Neon Red Crayon, -- Duncan left him at the motel on his holiday 8 months ago – how will he ever be able to make his way back?! This book features postcards written from these unfortunate crayon-characters and each has

a woeful tale to tell, pleading to be brought home to the crayon box. What can Duncan do to ensure that all his crayons are happy and safe? Fresh and funny and utterly original, this book makes for an uproarious storytime for all the family. The Lion and the Bird, by Marianne Dubuc, Book Island, $29.95 One autumn day, a lion finds a wounded bird in his garden and over the cold winter months nurtures it back to health. This is the story of how an unlikely and beautiful friendship grows. A near wordless picture book, with warm, magical illustrations, it has been favorably compared to The Little Prince. The Lion and the Bird has the same gentle spirit, a mesmerizing treasure of a book that reflects the bitter-sweet joy of a quiet and deeply rewarding friendship; how such a friendship can lift the soulwrenching pain of loneliness; and of how we must love people on their own terms and even let them go when they need to. A tender and timeless classic for all ages, this book will make your heart sing. Smelly Louie, by Catherine Rayner, Macmillan Children’s Books, $19.95 On page 1 of this picture book, we meet Louie, dripping wet after his bath and smelling of roses and apple blossom. He is “NOT happy about it”. We then get to join him on his stinky canine quest to get his smell back. Fun, pongy descriptions litter this text while the illustrations are suitably flystruck and putrid. Enjoy it with the preschool crowd, but be warned – all the older members of the family will jostle to join in too, and knowingly grin at the finale. ■ All books available at Storytime, 34 Porowini Ave, Whangarei

Interior space
The versatility and the best use of interior space is important. The way seats fold and move can create more interior space for some makes/models than others.

ust what are the bare essentials for a modern motor vehicle? Driven recently reported motorists are not using all the technology features fitted in their cars. Huge dollars are being invested in new technologies, but at least 20 per cent of owners in the US have never used half the available onboard technology, according to industry analyst JD Power. I could also be part of the group who don’t regularly use all the latest technology. When I get the opportunity to drive a press vehicle, I always try the latest features. But once the novelty is over, the tendency is to either forget to use them or find I don’t actually need to. Voice recognition is one feature that I find particularly frustrating, often having to repeat a particular command, which makes it easy to simply give up. So just what is important to owners? No doubt we all have slightly different needs, views and opinions, which is why all the features are fitted in the first place. You either use them or you don’t. And if you don’t, the next owner might, which could make a vehicle a little more appealing when it comes time to sell. Buyers can get sidetracked and become overly excited about a particular feature or benefit at

REVERSE CAMERAS AND PARKING SENSORS (ONE OR BOTH)
