O
JUNE 2016
riginally a Kerikeri girl, I passed through Whangarei to pick up my then-to-be husband, Our plan wasn’t to resettle in this little city but to put roots down in Christchurch - oh how this vision changed when the ground shook the place we knew so well. When I landed a job at The Northern Advocate eleven years ago and mini-me’s started to appear, it was here where we purchased our first home. Being situated in the middle of a rough area, our experience of this place wasn’t the most wonderful for the first five years of family life. We ached to move back to the colourful city that was Wellington or to the Christchurch we used to know. It felt cloudy here, dark and temperamental. The tagging littered the streets and the news was often bleak. There was almost a cloud that sat above us, depressing the streets and attitudes of the locals. I was guilty of being trapped under this cloud and I couldn’t see Whangarei for what it was or the potential that it held anymore. Over time, the cloud started to lift however and my eyes were open to a new Whangarei that I had never met before. I did love it here! Our hearts started to melt and the sun began to shine. Colour crept in, creating excitement. Wherever you stand on the Hundertwasser subject, we can all agree that a little bit of colour can move mountains and change a view through greyscale glasses to one of life, hope and fun.

Dogs Day Out PHILIPPA MANNAGH
W
here are we going? It’s been a long time since I’ve come out with mum and my human sister on a Thursday. Usually, mum and dad are working and if the kids aren’t here I have no one to play with. I love my cat brother and sister but they don’t play like dogs do, they don’t smell like dogs do and they don’t think like me. They’re too clever. The last time I got to play with some new friends was at the dog park and that wasn’t long enough. I wanted to play there all day. Driving away, I hoped there was something good coming. We walked along the pavement through a place they call “town”. Suddenly, I heard other dogs! My ears pricked up and my tail started wagging. I wasn’t expecting that, I thought maybe we were walking around the loop…. again. Oh look, ball!. Through the front gate, set back from the road I was welcomed by twelve of my new friends! Hi new friends! Ball.
They called me inside and showed me around, Elmo and Alfie knew all the gossip cause they live there. No one was grumpy to me and everyone wanted to share. There were big areas for all sorts of us, like a safe place for little puppies who I might accidentally knock over sometimes. Ball. My human sister loved it there too, but this was my turn. Couches, balls, water, beds, ropes, tyres, sun, space, love… I hope I can stay all day. I hear that it wouldn’t cost too much, come on mum! Ball. At home, I sit around by myself. I have no friends and this is so good for me. Lynn loves me too, do you see and she has only just meet me. She even cleaned up my mess straight away and said that she does it all the time so I shouldn’t feel bad. I don’t anyway. Ball. Some of my friends mums were out shopping for the morning or had travelled from out of town, some even come everyday while their master has to make some of that money stuff. Ball. I don’t want to go….
But I know i’ll be back and now i’m tired anyway. They tell me that it’s nap time after lunch, so i’ll go home then. I’ll miss you new friends and I promise I’ll be back. Ball, ball ball! This is the BEST place in town. Thanks Lynn! From Boots Dogs Day Out is a safe, fun alternative to leaving your dog home alone. A solution that Lynn Page was looking for, whilst having to work full time but still wanting her pups to have company during the day. Having a lifelong passion for animals, Lynn has longed to work with animals for many years and has recently created a facility where she can provide a home away from home. Where dogs can come to play and socialise with their buddies and get lots of human cuddles, while their parents are working... instead of being left alone, anxious and scared. Lynn has two pups, Elmo (Maltese/Chihuahua) and Alfie (a rescue Jack Russell X). Holding a Certificate in Dog Psychology & Training she is currently completing a Dog Grooming Diploma and Certificate in Dog Care.

undertwasserawareness month runs from June 1 - 24 and encourages locals to get behind the project and become part of the story - a community inspired by Hundertwasser Pam Tothill and her team have been the backbone to this initiative, ready to colour the city and engage local’s curiosity through all sorts of entertainment and scheduled events. This small group of busy ladies have worked with Pam for six months to get Hundertwasser month on a roll. From children’s art competitions, wig making, cocktail events, colourful cupcakes, window displays, art exhibitions, spinners and weavers and cake decorating there is something for everyone as the city comes out and backs this exciting project. The to-scale model now sits in the middle of Hunderwasser HQ and it is worth taking a look. Tourists already drive off the main road north to see it and to get a taste of what is to come. While you are there, feel free to ask questions and spend some time getting to know the information behind the project. Flick through the plans, the books, the artwork, brochures, admire the artworks, the history and feel the passion for yourself. This month offers a chance for Whangarei to really stand behind the
project and get involved. Donations are still required to reach the target and help from the wider community is now required to make this happen. “I would really like to take the opportunity to convey my gratitude to the existing volunteers and supporting businesses. There have literally been thousands of hours spent on this project to date by the volunteers for no personal gain. There is a core group of us that would each spend 30+ hours a week on it. We have accountants, lawyers, engineers, construction experts, artists, IT gurus, marketers, financial experts, architects, graphic designers, project managers on the team, all giving their time for nothing. The calibre of the volunteers is amazing,” says Andrew Garrett, project director. “This is a community run project, for the community to be owned by the community and I want everyone in Whangarei to feel they own a piece of this project. When we need some sort of expertise volunteered a person puts their hand up. It is inspirational to be part of such a great group of people. I don’t have to motivate anyone - such is the passion for the project, he says.” For more information this month please visit: www.yeswhangarei.co.nz

ut don’t worry as help is at hand at Santreno Shoes with their large range of waterproofers, cleaners and polishers. The most important time to waterproof
and polish footwear is when they are new. All new shoes come with a factory finish but adding a polish or waterproofing at this stage means that your footwear gets the protective layer that will repel water, stains and marking right from the beginning. At Santreno - they have vast product knowledge of their shoe care range and can recommend the right product to give your footwear the best protection. Nanopro from Germany is the latest innovation in the Collonil range which offers a high performance, heavy duty waterproofing. Nanopro can be used on leathers and textiles and it provides a powerful protection while maintaining full breathability. Collonil protect and care is a newly developed organic range that offers protection against dirt and moisture for those who wish to use a more natural product. It comes in a non-aerosol pump bottle and contains 90% natural ingredients including olive oil. Suede and nubuk are a more delicate leather and should be protected with a waterproof spray more regularly to guard against staining. Waterproofing also preserves the colour and conditions these leathers. Oiled nubuk and greased leather has a very individual look and for this type of leather a waterproofing product is essential in maintaining the oily nature of this leather and will help it from drying out. With the right care, your shoes should keep looking good for many winter months to come.

Are you wearing your jeans? As winter rolls around, it's the perfect excuse to invest in a coat that does all the work for your winter wardrobe. Team a coat with a clean-cut hemline that falls past the knee, whatever your shape or height. Or belt a trench at the waist to double up as an elegant coat dress. It does away with the need for any superfluous accessorising. If in doubt, keep it simple - a pair of black tights and black boots will see you through to spring!

have four pairs of jeans in my wardrobe. Two are resting, waiting for the waistline and butt to return to their former glory, one, my light denim pair, fit, just, but demand oversized tops and my favourites, the super stretch ‘badass’ pair I manage to pour myself into on ‘skinny’
wearing trousers publicly up until the early 1920’s and it wasn’t until the launch of ‘Lady Levi’s’ in 1934, a risk taken by Levi Strauss & Co, that the direction of women’s fashion was changed forever. Adorning such greats as Marilyn Monro and Audrey Hepburn and popularised by controversial
days. All are my fat monitors and none; I repeat none, are disposed of. So how is it that a garment made from such an uncomfortable constricting fabric, adorned with great patch pockets that should make your bum look even bigger and sewn together with brass rivets and topstitching suitable for tents become the most popular apparel on earth?? Since the ‘birth’ of jeans on 20 May 1873 when Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis patented the use of rivets on ‘waist overalls’ to make denim work wear last longer, the popularity of denim jeans has rocketed. Promoted through the decades
add campaigns like Calvin Klein’s 1980 “You want to know what comes between me and my Calvins?” featuring a 15 year old Brooke Shields, jeans ‘badass’ or not have evolved into a global sensation. And we are part of that global sensation as we search for a brand of jeans that suits just us. Everyone wants to look great in a pair of jeans, yet they have to be comfortable, wrinkle in the right places, nip in with ease and have a range of shades, leg lengths and widths to give us choices, without compromising style. When we find them we covet them and we don’t have to go far…

Guide to Being Photogenic A genuine smile in four steps… SARAHLEE COBB The most important part of a great photo is a good smile. It’s the first thing people look at when they see your picture and if it’s not quite right or not genuine everyone can tell. Especially when it’s you looking at your own photo, because no one knows you like you do. This edition we BEFORE AFTER will talk about things to think through when some one says smile, and there are so many types of smiles. 1. Relax; most people are intimidated by being in front of the camera, so first things first relax the muscles of your face. This dead-ban look is the start of a good expression. 2. It’s in the eyes; focus on smiling with your eyes, friendly welcoming, and happy eyes. When you genuinely smile through your eyes you will get ‘crows feet’ wrinkles this is a good thing. It is more important to smile with the eyes than with the mouth, the eyes convey true emotion. 3. Don’t forget to breathe; anytime we become stressed we tend to hold our breath until the photo is taken and then we gasp in fresh air. I don’t have to tell you we need air, it’s an important part of living. But if you hold your breath during a photo, the tension will show on your face and your smile will start to look pained. 4. Play; change your smile slowly. Go from no smile to small smile, big grin and even smirking. If you are constantly think about the next smile you not going to over think things. And it stops your cheeks from aching from holding the same expression for hours. The photos I have shown today are a before and after of a similar smile but focus on the little differences and you’ll see that the type of smile is very different.

The power of colourful, happy thoughts CORINNE AUSTIN
W
e’ve all heard people say it - ‘think positive’. Well now, it’s actually considered to be one of the most powerful assets you can have - a consistently positive outlook on life. People who exhibit optimism on a regular basis attract success, good health, a big social network, and oodles of happiness. Research can now confirm that positive results and happy endings are actually a product of positive and optimistic thinking. As the law of attraction goes – positive thoughts foster positive results. When we think negative thoughts, our brains are programmed to narrow our thinking. For instance, if an intruder were to break in to your house, your thoughts are automatically streamlined to focus on nothing other than keeping you and your families safe. Our brains respond to all negative emotions the same way. We instinctively shut off all the other events and happenings in our outside world, and automatically limit all other possible options and choices that surround us. It becomes hard to see a way out. On the contrary, positive thoughts and emotions open
up a world of exciting opportunities. When you experience joy, love, or celebration, the possibilities in your life appear
Here’s some ideas to boost your positive thoughts and relinquish the power of positive thinking:

The types of thoughts and cognitions we have today stay with us for a long time, and help to shape our future. .
• Replace all ‘I cant’s with ‘I cans’. After all, whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re always right!
Happy thoughts, those filled with joy and colour, enable us to construct and cultivate skill sets and cognitive resources that

250 delicious healthy snacks, treats and desserts no oven needed

hen I introduce people to a raw dessert I have made, the response is always the same. “This is raw, this is healthy?” I can understand their surprise when all of our lives we have been offered high-calorie desserts laden with white sugar, white flour, eggs, butter and cream which contain plenty of calories but fall way short of nutrients and taste. I get to see people’s faces light up when I show them how to combine almonds, avocados, dates and cacao powder in a food processor and create a rich creamy chocolate mousse. I also get to hear them say “Wow!” when I serve up a slice of ‘cheesecake’
right track to healthier eating. The good news is eating this way not only helps us achieve ultimate health but also helps us maintain a healthy weight. We can also lessen the negative impact of chemicals in our food and our exposure to food allergens like wheat, dairy and gluten; things that we are becoming more aware of that can damage our health. You will be doing your part in contributing to the future of our planet by getting yourself back into the kitchen and making and enjoying your own food. As you increase your intake of whole fresh ingredients you will notice your body becoming not only
made with ingredients like fruit and nuts and that could rival something that came off the shelf of a gourmet bakery. No wonder they are amazed when they discover they can enjoy rich delicious desserts, snacks and treats made from the healthiest foods on earth. Ground nuts replace flour; dried fruits and other natural sweeteners replace sugar; and coconut and its oil replace butter, cream and eggs. When your dessert provides you with anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, amino acids and enzymes you know you are on the
healthier but leaner and more energetic as well. This way of eating isn’t another diet; it’s a lifestyle shift towards better health and what better way to do it than with decadent desserts that are as healthy as they are delicious. Some of the recipes even have sneaky vegetables added which is a great way to feed them to your family and they won’t even know it! It is estimated that the HUNDERTWASSER ART CENTRE with Wairau Māori Art Gallery will attract up to 150,000 visitors a year. International consultancy Deloitte estimates the Centre will bring $3.5 million a year in net economic benefit to the Northland Region. These conservative figures are based on government statistics of domestic and international visitors to Northland, and on the number of these visitors will frequent art galleries and museums. Based on these estimates, the HUNDERTWASSER ART CENTRE would pay for itself in 3.9 years. The Deloitte report says the World Bank considers cultural assets to be a resource for economic development. “The HUNDERTWASSER ART CENTRE will deliver cultural benefits at a local, national and international level and is well placed to make a solid economic contribution to the community,” the report says. The hotel industry has advised that a 4-star hotel of up to 120 rooms will be viable as a result of increased tourist traffic generated by the HAC project. The Centre and a hotel combined are likely to provide around 100 jobs.

THE WAIRAU MAORI ART GALLERY The Wairau Māori Art gallery is the most exciting project for the permanent promotion of contemporary Maori arts in the history of Aotearoa. It will give an unparallelled opportunity for Māori artists to show their work and for the public from near and far, to respect, admire and learn about Te Ao Māori and its possibilities in the modern world. It is truly a great gift that Friedensreich Hundertwasser has given to the people he loved.
VISION
An inspiring place for Aotearoa audiences and international visitors to experience and enjoy the high quality arts of Māori as tangata whenua, the indigenous people.
PURPOSE
The Wairau Māori Art Gallery will strengthen the profile of Māori nationally, and our whānau, hapū and iwi, and it will serve as an invaluable global link connecting Māori, all New Zealanders and international visitors. The Gallery will be a stimulating space where Māori art can be debated and where knowledge can be shared with Māori, locals and national and international visitors. The Wairau Māori Art Gallery has the potential to take a leading role in the articulation of indigenous arts globally.
VALUES

THE ARTIST
Friedensreich Hundertwasser was one of the 20th century’s most celebrated European artists. His worldwide renown was already established in the 1960s, and an eventful career followed that was rich in impact. His presence, his power, was the fruit of his painting and of his activities in many fields. Demonstrations, speeches and happenings, actions and performances, contributions to ecology, the commitment to a life in harmony with nature, manifestos for a more human architecture and for the enhancement of living conditions and of human life. Hundertwasser – a campaigner against the pollution of the environment, against the dangers of nuclear energy, against ruining nature and destroying natural heritage. Hundertwasser – an artistic, social, architectural and ecological cosmos. Austrian-born, the global nomad fell in love with Northland in 1973. He bought a farm
near Kawakawa and restored the bare land to nature, establishing canals, ponds, water purification plants, solar and water energy, humus toilets and recycling methods. Hundertwasser’s poster for New Zealand Conservation Week 1974 marked the beginning of his public activism through art. He went on to paint many posters worldwide, campaigning for peace, racial equality and the environment. The artist was fascinated to discover his key motif, the spiral, is also prominent in Māori symbolism. He found the holistic nature of Māori spirituality mirrored his own strong connection to nature. The “Koru Flag” he designed for New Zealand in 1985 (left) signified his vision for an independent, bicultural nation. Hundertwasser became a New Zealand citizen. Though he continued to travel the world, he always kept his watch on New Zealand time and returned every year to his antipodean sanctuary. His close work with Māori on the Kawakawa Public Toilets project was significant for the artist, who came to be respected by tangata whenua as a man of great mana. Hundertwasser died in 2000, and is buried in harmony with nature, as he wished, under a tulip tree.
“When we dream alone it is only a dream, but when many dream together it is the beginning of a new reality.” During my travels I have enjoyed visiting many great architectural works of art. I saw first-hand how it brought people together and inspired people to dream of what is possible. The Hundertwasser will be a catalyst for further growth, it will enrich our city with vibrancy and colour for all to enjoy”. Cameron Thompson - Northland Document Solutions

THE DESIGN TEAM Eminent European architect Heinz Springmann has been appointed by the Hundertwasser Non-Profit Foundation in Vienna to ensure the artist’s plans are carried out in keeping with his objectives and philosophy. Springmann was a key partner in Hundertwasser’s “architecture family”. His work was vital to the success of Hundertwasser architecture projects worldwide. Whangarei firm Harris Butt Architecture has been contracted to
work with the Foundation and Springmann on detailed designs. The firm has delivered a raft of major public projects including the Waitangi National Trust gateway and amenities buildings and the Knoll Ridge café at Mt Ruapehu, winner of the NZ Architecture Award for commercial architecture in 2012. Colourful coasters - awesome art
COLOUR OUR CITY •
The Colour our City movement was born out of the Whangarei community rising up after 5 Council owned bollards were painted bright Hundertwasser colours down at the Town Basin. As such, it grew organically, was never planned, burst into life via social media where the bollards story got 1000s of hits and comments. The power of this simple statement by these 2 local artists (and the derision from the public of the Council’s response to paint them back dull green) took everyone by surprise.
•
We believe the HAC will act as a magnificent magnet to art lovers everywhere but our vision is that when they come here they will get much more than one art centre. We hope that by the time the doors of the HAC open, visitors to our city will see colour starting to pop up everywhere. As such the whole creative community will be nourished and a new vitality and excitement will be in the air.
•
Colour Our City is firstly about Colour so will focus on the visual. The wider arts of dance, theatre, music and Maori culture will follow along and augment us but we do not see them as being our prime concern. To make our CBD look different, to look like a change is happening, we need paint, colour, form and design to be seen wherever possible.
•
The Colour Our City Movement has as its central aims:
•
To maximize the value of the coming increased tourism by promoting public colour, art and design in our region.
•
To increase community engagement and ownership of the importance of art in our region by creating a colourful urban environment.
•
To assist in the rebranding of our city so it is known for its colour and art.
•
The Colour Our City movement has a 5 year plan to firstly transform the inner city into one of colour and art and to provide a link from the CBD to the HAC and Town Basin. It is felt that the Colour Our City movement will entice visitors to the city and town basin.

PROJECT HISTORY In 1993, Hundertwasser was invited by the Mayor of Whangarei to design an art centre for the city. He chose the former Northland Harbour Board building and made a number of visits to study the building and sketch his ideas. The Whangarei District Council purchased the building in 2006 and the project was revived in 2008 when the Hundertwasser Non-Profit Foundation in Vienna retrieved the artist’s original drawings and architectural concept from its own archive. The Foundation agreed to support the building of the art centre and to circulate original art works from its Hundertwasser Museum in Vienna for display in Whangarei. These gifts, of significant value, were made because of the authenticity of the project and the artist’s love of New Zealand. The Council committed $8m, a further $5m was publically raised and the project was included in the District Long Term Plan, but in mid-2014 a newly elected Council voted not to proceed, citing lack of public support. A group of Whangarei residents quickly came together to rescue the valuable project. Prosper Northland Trust submitted a revised, mostly publically-funded proposal and in June 2015 the new and entirely community-led HUNDERTWASSER ART CENTRE project won a binding public referendum in a landslide result. The Council’s new commitment to the new PNT project includes a
contribution of $2.9 million, contingent on the remaining funds being raised publicly. Now Prosper Northland Trust are working with Whangarei Art Museum Trust and a skilled and passionate team of volunteers to raise the $12,000,000 needed to build the art centre. This funding goal must be reached before June 2017. The HUNDERTWASSER ART CENTRE with Wairau Māori Art Gallery will open before June 2019.

PROSPER NORTHLAND TRUST
Prosper Northland Trust was formed by Whangarei residents intent on building a “bigger, brighter future” for their city and Northland. The Trust rescued the HUNDERTWASSER ART CENTRE project after it was abandoned by the Whangarei District Council in 2014, believing the project offered their city an immediate opportunity for growth and vibrancy. They successfully championed the project through the Council submission process and the resulting public referendum. Their focus is now firmly on fundraising and seeing the art centre built. Trustees are committed to working with members of their community, for the benefit of Whangarei and Northland residents. While their immediate goal is to see the art centre come to fruition, PNT is supportive of all community initiatives that will create growth, prosperity and a better future for Whangarei. Barry Trass (Chair) was born in Whangarei and is one of Northland’s best-known businessmen. Married to Jenny, they have three daughters and two grandchildren. Barry is an active and involved champion of Northland business and industry. Andrew Garratt shifted to Whangarei from Wellington in 1994 to work for the Northland Port Corporation in his first senior management role. Since then he has made Whangarei his home and with partner Jenny become active in the local art world. Greg Guy was born in Whangarei. Married to Carol, they have one son, Stephen. Greg is MD of Guyco Group, a family business formed in 1953 with interests in industries including timber pallets and packaging, timber machining, construction, storage, property development and property maintenance. Jenny Hill was born in Perth, travelled the world as a child and young adult, and arrived in the Bay of Islands in 1979. Almost immediately she “felt at home” and started a new life as an artist and New Zealander. Jenny married local painter Tom Burnett and as well as raising their

Eight years ago Nick took over the reins at legendary Schnappa Rock Restaurant and recently developed the successful Bank Street Social Club venue in central Whangarei. Todd Barrell trained as a jeweller in Whangarei and practised professionally for 30 years, running his own jewellery business for more than 15 years. An artist in his own right, Todd is passionate about the creative community. Todd restores vehicles and properties in his spare time. Christine King has called Whangarei home since she was 18 months old. Christine has spent most of her professional life as a draughtsperson. She has also been a tutor at (Northland Polytech) and a building inspector, all while working as “a one woman band” designer. Ian Reeves is a senior partner with Whangarei law firm Henderson Reeves. Originally from Gisborne, Ian travelled the world before coming to live in Whangarei in 1973. Ian lives on the Tutukaka Coast with wife Kim and is active in local business
organisations and an honorary solicitor for many charitable institutions. Andrew Smith has spent his working life in businesses supplying materials to the construction industry, starting with family business Smith & Smith Ltd (where he became Managing Director), and then from 1987 with two partners in glass merchant business Metropolitan Glass, which they established from scratch. Pam Tothill was born in Christchurch and moved to Russell as a teacher in 1976. She spent 13 “wonderfully rewarding” years living and teaching at schools in Kaikohe, Ohaeawai, Pakaraka, Kawakawa and Whau Valley. Pam and her husband Ian ran two Variety #1 stores in Whangarei. “Reyburn and Bryant are proud supporters of the Hundertwasser project. We believe that it will benefit both present and future generations of Northlanders. In addition to the economic benefits that it will bring, it will also make a significant contribution to our sense of place, and should instil pride in the community we live in”.

WOMEN IN B USINESS
I’m really proud of how the business is building up and the people we are able to help.
Name - Angela Young I run the business with my husband Charles. And the kids play their part too – carrying buckets of products and taping up boxes for shipment. For payment they get an Epsom Salt bath to ease their tired muscles from all the hard work!
Business name and when it was established Whangarei East Driving Miss Daisy and as there is no one operating as Whangarei West Driving Miss Daisy, we pick up clients from either side of town.
Describe your business. Driving Miss Daisy is a nationwide service offering much more than transportation - we’ll collect you, drive you to and from your destination and provide assistance as needed! We are a prebooked service and will provide a quote prior to your trip. We work closely with ACC and other community organisations.
What has been your biggest business challenge over the past year, and how are you tackling it? Getting out of my comfort zone and having to sell my business to the general public. All I can say is practice, practice, practice!
What do you do in your leisure time? Running, walking mountains, boxing and any form of exercise with my other crazy exercise friends. We manage to find solutions to a lot of the world’s problems while we run
What awards or accolades are you most proud of? I’m a new business so none to report – but I’m really proud of how the business is building up and the people we are able to help.
What is your proudest moment? Seeing each of our beautiful children for the first time and knowing that I helped bring them into this world.
What is your most embarrassing moment? I got changed in the wee hours of the morning in the dark to head to a boxing gym for a 6am session. I didn’t want to wake my family so kept the lights off. When I was doing sit ups I felt a bulge in the back of my shorts – after quickly scuttling off to the changing room I noticed I hadn’t pulled off all my clothes that I had slept in and I been wearing them during my class tucked into the back of my workout clothes!
What was your first job? While at school I cleaned the toilets and floors of the Onerahi Community House.
What is the strangest thing you have ever bought? I have brought a few weird and wonderful things while travelling overseas but they have never made it past customs.
If you could be anyone else, who would you be, and why? I would love to be my husband for a day and see what his day is really like. He is extremely patient, very laid back, loves the cold, can do any exercise without training and still beat me, can sit on the couch surrounded by mess and enjoys beer – the complete opposite to me. It would be great for me to be able to pick up a few of his qualities!

here are some interior styles that transcend the seasons, and this is one of them. Call it ‘native natural’, ‘tribal luxe’ or ‘eclectic ethnic’, it’s a look that is based on a sensuous Resene palette of bitter burnt browns, savannah golds and rich ivories. It’s a great interior theme for those who want a dark moody feel but find that current trends for dark grey or inky blue are too cool. Or for those who are a bit over the Scandi look and crave a richer, more interesting colour palette. The beauty of both the Scandi look and this tribal luxe approach is that they are both firmly anchored in natural elements – rustic timbers, shaggy furs and skins, woven accessories like baskets and mats. And they both look great with ethnic prints and over-size black and white artworks. You can keep the palette simple and monochromatic, or add spirited touches of fiery red and burnt orange for quite a different look – we show you both here. See how easy it is to transform a room, or to take it from summer to winter by simply adding a couple of colourful accessories and changing
Create the best black and white scheme
Y
ou’d think it would be the easiest colour scheme in the world to create - black and white. It’s certainly a striking and dramatic combo that can be adapted to many interior styles from Nordic or New York loft, minimalist or Parisienne apartment. Follow these tips to getting it right, and see our inspirational examples. • It’s all about proportion. Using half black and half white can look odd so use either the one third/two thirds rule if you’re painting surfaces like the walls, floors and ceilings. • Or if you intend one of the colours to be just an accent colour, use more of a 90 percent/10 percent ration. Use either your black or white for the surfaces and accessorise with the other. • Just plain black and white can look a bit boring, so look for a great pattern in black and white to add interest, either in fabric or wallpaper. • Get the gloss levels right. Do you want a glossy, more blingy look, or are you after textured velvety finishes? • Jump onto the current trend of black and
out the rug. It’s a forgiving look. In these rooms, the line on the wall separating Resene Bronze (on the bottom) and Resene Triple Wheatfield (top) is hand-painted, using the edge of a speed brush (available from Resene ColorShops). If it was ruler-straight, it just wouldn’t look right. Then the reverse colour stencils are simple pressed on using a cut-up kitchen sponge. So easy, and so effective.

Tribal luxe and bitter browns
Why it works
• There are lots of soft circular shapes, no harsh edges – the wallhung baskets, the lamp base, the pots and the rug. • Texture, and more texture, expressed in baskets, open-weave fabrics and strokeable leather. • Simple ethnic patterns, in black and white for the monochromatic scheme, and in the richly coloured rug in the second version. • Nothing’s too perfect, from the wall stencil to the throw and cushions slung on the chair and floor. • In the colourful version, counterbalance the hot reds and oranges (the pots are Resene Pirate Gold and Resene Fahrenheit) with more cool greenery and more plants.
Lets bring some colours to life
♥ Distinctive floral designs for all
occasions ♥ Wedding & event specialists ♥ Tasteful sympathy tributes ♥ Plants and gifts baskets ♥ Regular office, hotel &
restaurant arrangements white artworks. Check out local artists, or convert your own photographs to black and white, print them out in large format and buy a cheap black or white box frame. • Not all blacks and whites are created equal. There are a huge range of variations of each in the Resene paint colour collections. Whites that range from stark white through bone, alabaster, cream and more. Then there are blacks edged with brown, green, inky blue... compare colours from the Resene Whites & Neutrals collection to see which undertones suit your taste. • To retain the drama, accessorise with just one family of alternative accent colours. You might go for natural tones in rush or cowhide mats, baskets and salvaged timber. Or you might go for soft metallics like pewter or galvanised surfaces. Rooms that are mostly white are more forgiving of a range of accent colours - sea blues, apple greens, greys etc

aving bright fun colours isn’t just reserved for the Hundertwasser building! Make your home a fun, happy place to be by injecting strategic splashes of colour. White is the perfect backdrop for applying any colour, so after dousing my home from top to bottom
in Resene Black White (my favourite ‘go-to’ white), I decided it was time to inject a little personality and fun into our home. The kitchen was in need of updating, but with a very small DIY budget, I had to think outside the box! When viewed from the adjacent dining area, three walls jut into the kitchen from the right hand side. Rather than making them blend in, I decided to add excitement, with layers of colour. Resene Spotlight, a vivid yellow, creates a welcoming entry and a cheery backdrop into the dining area. A red bookshelf I had in the lounge was my next cue, although I was very aware that I didn’t
want to make the kitchen look like McDonalds!! However red was a great option given there are so many red accessories available to pair it with. Resene Bullseye (red) continues the flow of colour and is tied in with all the red accessories. The final layer was

a floor to ceiling cupboard, now painted in Resene Blackboard Paint – providing a chance for myself and the kids to have fun writing messages to each other. The wall opposite is painted in smoky grey Resene Gun Powder which beautifully framed the window, and actually made the room appear bigger and brighter! The wall was covered in old melamine, so a quick, and inexpensive way to update it was to paint. I used Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to grip onto the smooth melamine and two coats of Resene Enamacryl so the wall was easy to clean. The rest of the kitchen was refreshed with a coat of Resene Black White and some new handles.
Home buying tips in a heated market 1 – Have a game plan. If you have a strong idea of what you are looking for, when you find it you will know. Incorporate the 80/10/10 rule – 80% you really like, 10% you can change and 10% you can live with. When you find the right property you will be ready to act quickly! 2 – Do not become overly emotional. It is possible in a heated market like we are experiencing you may miss out on a number of homes prior to making a purchase…even if you do take all the advice offered in this article. Establish a budget, stick to your game plan and trust that the right house is around the next corner.
3 – Be prepared. Get pre-approved finance from your bank. Once you are pre-approved it could be as easy as giving them the address of the property you are interested to get full finance approval. You do not want to miss out on a property because you are waiting on your bank. 4 – Have a building inspection company on speed dial. A good deal for a vendor is a clean deal. Removing the need for conditions such as building inspections and finance as discussed above will make your offer far more attractive. I am in no way advocating not getting a building inspection but to make sure you can get it done in a timely manner.

Oh sadly winter will be approaching soon, how soon is anyone’s guess, but it will happen.
I
thought it best to give out a few tips on “winterising” your sleeping conditions , keeping you safe and sleeping well….we do all need to wake up refreshed even though the colder months tend to make us feel a bit woeful, as we wake up in the dark and the days seem so much shorter. For those of you who love your electric blankets, this is the ideal time, before it gets too cold, to get them checked to make sure they are still safe and no wires are exposed or twisted. Unfortunately, being privy to a lot of your sleeping conditions I am aware that a large percentage, keep their electric blanket on their beds all year round. This is not a good idea, as the wires can get worn and can lead to overheating and who knows what. The other consideration you might need to think about for those who feel the cold is rather than the fitted electric blankets, I would recommend the unfitted one and slip that between the sheets, warming your bed and then pulled out from amongst the sheets, once the bed is nice and toasty. This will allow you to enjoy the comfort of your mattress, as you did when you choose it. The thing about electric blankets is that they will make your mattress feel a lot firmer, as you are sleeping on a pad filled with wires. If you insist on keeping the fitted electric blankets, all good, but not all year round. Also bear in mind that when using an electric blanket with a waterproof mattress protector, the electric blanket needs to be below the mattress protector and not above. The other alternative, of which there are a few, would be a wool underlay. Yes, these

are warm and feel wonderful initially, but be aware that over time, they will flatten and again, make your mattress feel a lot firmer and will no longer “cushion” areas such as your shoulders and hips when sleeping on your side. Another product is the down and feather underlays. These will make your bed feel cosy and luxurious, but, if not shaken regularly, they too will flatten. Also bear in mind that the higher the percentage of down to feather ratio is, the better the quality and sadly the more costly they get. And while I’m on the subject of down and feather, when purchasing a down and feather duvet, remember that the more % of down, the lighter and warmer it will be……(down is for warmth and feathers are for flying….). The more feathers it contains, the heavier and noisier they become. For those who like the heaviness of blankets, the better choice of duvet inner would be wool. But there are a lot more choices available, including a heated duvet inner! Last but not least, your sheets. The warmest and best would be the good old flannelette. 100% brushed cotton, unlike a lot of other winter friendly sheets on the market, which contain polyester, which in essence is “plastic”, particularly the micro fibre ones. They do feel good, but sadly do not breathe and then you end up perspiring, and when you perspire, you throw the blankets off and then you’re cold! Always read the content labels before making your purchases. Finally, how about that good old fashioned hot water bottle… Now that was a great invention. Remember advice is always free, so if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call BedsRus on 09 438 3550, 7 days a week. I also recommend you look at

Celebrating thirtythree years of the best-dressed windows in town
Imagine lying in bed on a Sunday morning and with one press of the remote, the drapes open to reveal the beautiful day outside. Or say you are working late and don’t fancy coming home to a cold, dark and empty house with all the blinds open – with one touch of a button from your cell phone, this can be remedied.

utomation is just the best, says Frazerhust showroom consultant Tracey Harvey. “You can sit relaxing on the lounge suite and lower the sun filter blinds on the late afternoon glare without getting
up. “Then there is the smart automation that can roll in your awning if the wind has picked up, without you raising a finger. Come into our showroom on Lower Dent St and have a play with our remotes.” Tracey is also enthusiastic to showcase this season’s trends: “There are always the popular choices of roller blinds
and timber venetians that we favour here in Northland but at Frazerhurst we love this season’s trend in soft window dressings. It is a blending of warm textured naturals with the new industrial black-white ideal. Tracey says the dominant colour is ‘greige’ and all of its various shades of grey and beige. “Technically greige is un-bleached or un-dyed yarn but this new incarnation has a wide range of warm and cool neutrals that work with the modern tone on tone colour schemes,” she explains. Tracey and the team notice that while some customers enter the showroom with a clear picture of what they want, the majority take on a somewhat glazed expression when they see the wide and varied range of choices available. “We try to simplify the process by asking a few key questions that give us a picture of the client’s home and how they like to live. I ask my clients to take a little bit of time and peruse the samples from our fantastic suppliers. Then we can work together to get a result that is aesthetically-pleasing, suits the home and is within the budget. I enjoy working with people to help them choose something they will love and be proud of for years to come.”

o you ever sit out in your backyard and wonder why your once beautiful Vireya Rhododendrons are looking ratty?
Rhododendrons prefer acidic soils with a pH between 4.5 to 6.0. Rhododendrons will let you know if the pH is not correct.
If the leaves turn yellow between green veins then you most likely have a pH problem. If this occurs, sulphur can be used to lower the soil pH. Avoid planting Rhododendrons near concrete pathways, driveways or foundations that may leach out lime which raises the pH. These few simple tips will keep your Vireya Rhodos looking lush. Here at Alter-Natives we tailor our potting mix for the needs of our huge range of native and exotic plants including Grevillias, succulents, Astelias and Leucodendrons. Our potting mix contains a coated NPK fertiliser that releases nitrogen, phosphate and potassium along with trace elements. The nutrients are encapsulated in an organic resin coating and release a little every day, so it minimises nutrient leaching into the environment. As our nursery site grows, so do the irrigation needs of our plants, we use rain sensors and a computerised irrigation system to conserve as much water as possible. There are many ways that we can all help conserve water. Using mulch on top of the soil, creating shelter from wind either using artificial windbreak or one of our many hedging or shelter trees we stock.

What’s changing at Maunu’s Jolt Cafe?
M
aunu has its first on license and to celebrate Jolt Café has extended its hours til 9pm on Thursdays and Fridays….and is looking at Saturdays as well if there is sufficient demand. Ian Gillingham, who set up Jolt Café with his wife Sue and son Kyle 3 years ago says “Maunu has been asking for a ‘local’ for years. Now they can have a refreshing ale or glass of wine without the hassle of travelling down town.” Jolt Café is serving wine and beer during the day at its café and is intending to open a restaurant service in the future. Ian says “In the interim, Jolt is opening into the evening with light meals. Depending on the success of this, and the demand, we will continue to reassess the restaurant viability”. Jolt is only 2 minutes west of the Maunu lights and has great on-site parking. “We now have regulars at the café from all over Whangarei and welcome everyone to come up for a drink and a meal with us.” Ian says. The wine and beer list is impressive. The on license allows Jolt to complement the award winning Altura coffee and outstanding cabinet and menu food. “Your ‘special occasion’ can now be celebrated at Jolt Café.” Sue says. “We pride ourselves on the great feedback we receive from so many of our customers. Quality ‘everytime’ is what we strive to deliver” Wind down at the end of the week at Jolt Café, Top O’ the Hill in Maunu.

I would want to curl up with a good book in front of the fire and stay home instead of heading out to eat.
The Old Stone Butter Factory would be one exception however, as she draws you in by her 100 year old stone walls, cosy seating and a unique warmth that reminds you of home. Every night is different here, leading the way by showcasing Northland’s top talent and our amazing creative community, so it was the first time I had been along as ‘just a diner’ on a night with no entertainment planned. The bar hummed with a dozen or so committed diners who had also braved the elements on this cold Tuesday night. Red wine was definitely in order tonight for myself and my dining partner opted for a glass of tap beer to get the evening started. Their selection is impressive. Choosing an inviting couch to spend our meal time, we sunk into the cushions after a long day to sit back and soak up the atmosphere. Sharing a plate of garlic bruschetta with fresh garlic and herb butter we quickly found our groove, it reminded us about our year spent in Wellington as similarly, this venue oozes culture. Mains were soon served and we enjoyed the warm pesto vegetable salad with tossed through baby spinach and basil pesto feta, delicious! And ribs and wings, a half rack of ribs and half a dozen buffalo wings with a handful of fries. The night was fun, relaxing and enjoyable. Perfect for a Tuesday night out and a great venue to catch up with your friends, family or the other half. For dessert we couldn’t go past the milk chocolate mousse topped with black cherries. The selection of sweet treats filled the cabinet and was the perfect ‘cherry on top’ to a great “For the passionate palette” night out!

Confidence tips for women drivers
T
here are now more women drivers on the roads than ever before and statistics show they have fewer accidents than men.
However while the majority tackle peak hour traffic and motorways as part of everyday living there are those who balk at the very thought of venturing out behind the wheel of a car. These can be highly competent women from all walks of life who socially are totally in control yet are too frightened to drive, while others are too nervous to even learn. Driving anxiety is completely normal and can be cured. Don’t let a lack of confidence put you off driving. Below are a few tips to help you through:
Face the Fear For many this is easier said than done. If your fear is so profound you can’t even get into a car then it may not be possible to overcome it. But for those who have gained the courage to drive, never avoid driving. Those who do avoid driving or succumb to any phobia, only confirm their own fears. You can’t afford to do that if you want to beat the problem.
Don’t add to the Anxiety Ensure your own driving is not adding to the problem. Drive within the speed limit, signal before you turn and check blind spots. You need to make sure you’re not contributing to your own anxiety problem by validating the fear through driving in a way that is dangerous. Also avoid carrying passengers who
are verbally critical back-seat drivers.
Drive in Safe/Slow Areas Try finding a large empty carpark and simply drive around for a while. The longer you drive the better. Being behind the wheel in an non-threatening environment can be beneficial.
Practice Mindfulness Create awareness around yourself. The more you notice the signs of tension and stress the more you’ll be able to talk yourself down from them. Take two minutes to slow down your breathing every time you get into the car. Learn to control your dangerous thoughts, clenching or shaking and pay attention, addressing each example of stress one by one until you’re more relaxed. Imagine you are inside a protective bubble and safe from imaginary dangers. If the problem persists a professional hypnotherapist may be able to help identify the cause of your anxiety.
in traffic or how to turn the hazard lights on if you need to be stationery in a busy situation. Make sure the rear vision mirror is set for your line of vision and the side mirrors are correctly positioned.
On The Road Be aware of what is going on around you to avoid nasty surprises. Use your mirrors often and look as far up the road as you can. If you’re feeling intimidated by the aggression of other drivers change your nuisance ‘neighbours’. Do a left turn, pull over safely or do a lap of a roundabout to avoid them.
The Essential Kit Provide comfort and reassurance for yourself. Keep a few essentials in your car such as a blanket, snacks, water, a torch, a rain coat and a pair of boots. Should you break down or need to help others, you’ll be prepared.
Always Learning
Extra Tuition
Very few drivers take further instruction after passing their test. Many think because they’ve been driving for five, ten or more years that they know everything there is to know. Wrong. It’s that attitude which makes people more susceptible to accidents. Be smart and extend your learning from the professionals.
Professional Driving Schools are equipped to offer courses to fit the requirements of any client. Practicing in dual controlled cars offers a safety net to those regaining their confidence. Driving empowers the individual, provides independence, is time saving and adds flexibility to your life. It is a vital connection to the outside world and worth fighting for. So venture back out there and enjoy the freedom driving has to offer.

I confess, I’m a stickler for routine; I find a consistent and predictable life to be grounding and comforting. Take bedtime, for instance. My personal preferences include a bath (a warm soak rather than a manic splashing!), teethbrushing and reading. For Little Rabbit, it’s a pillow-fluff, back-rub and “Now give his ears a tickle…”. Last year saw the internet sensation of the self-published and heavily marketed The Rabbit Who Wants to Fall Asleep, -- accurately described by one reviewer as “the stuff of nightmares”. In complete contrast, this is the Rabbit book for a full and satisfying bedtime routine, a truly gladsome book for you and your toddler to snuggle down with. LOVE it. “Tuck Little Rabbit in tight… And don’t forget to turn out the light. Sleep tight, Little Rabbit!”
BOOK OF THE MONTH
ANNEMARIE FLORIAN Annemarie Florian is an Author, Librarian and Bookseller for Storytime, storytime.co.nz
The World’s Worst Children, by David Walliams, illustrated by Tony Ross, HarperCollins $24.95
Historically cautionary tales were used to enforce conformity, “nice little histories about children who had got burnt, and eaten up by wild beasts and other unpleasant things, all because they would not remember the simple rules”. (Alice, in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll) Nowadays we like to think our approach to ethics is not quite so overtly clumsy. David Walliams’ anarchic stories about 10 truly awful children succeed in being gigglingly funny, while at the same time posing thoughtful questions about what constitutes acceptable behavior in different situations. Read aloud to 6 to 10 year-olds for a truly appreciative audience.
Lord and Lady Bunny – Almost Royalty! By Mr. & Mrs. Bunny, translated from the Rabbit by Polly Horvath, illustrated by Sophie Blackall, Yearling $22.95 Light and funny, strange and goofy, here’s the silly sequel to Mr. and Mrs. Bunny – Detectives Extraordinaire! Mr. and Mrs. Bunny are back, along with Madeline and her hippy-dippy parents. They all end up in England, where Mrs. Bunny is in search of a title, preferably Queen… Expect mayhem. Like any good children’s film, this book has something for everyone. Parents and teachers will especially enjoy the author’s dry wit, as she takes on social media, celebrity culture, social class, royal watchers, food fads and more. Outrageous fun for a family read-aloud.
Harvesting Dreams : Hundertwasser for Kids, by Barbara Stieff, Prestel $44.95
The Rest of Us Just Live Here, by Patrick Ness, Walker Books $21.95
Beautifully illustrated and presented, this book is captivating. At its heart, it is an engaging introduction to the work of Hundertwasser -- artist, humanitarian, environmentalist and architect. Built around that core are activities and suggestions designed for young readers to explore their own view of creativity, curiosity and reflection. Throughout his life and work, Hundertwasser wanted to make people receptive to beauty and aware of their own creative abilities. In this book, Stieff has created a fitting tribute to his legacy. A great resource for the primary years.
A satirical and refreshing read that doesn’t easily fit into any one genre. Instead it morphs into an ingenious blend of sci-fi fantasy and contemporary fiction, all the while poking fun at clichéd paranormal romance and cheesy horror movies. Weird, but you can’t help but smile at the mix of humour and emotion. Bookish teens and adults will especially appreciate the character-driven, light-on-plot lampooning.
The Last Painting of Sara De Vos, by Dominic Smith, Allen & Unwin $37.95
The Beginner’s Guide to Netball, by Maria Tutaia, Random House $34.95
At school level in NZ, more people play netball than any other sport. So this is a very welcome addition to the series that already includes Hunting and Fishing, Rugby and Adventure Sports. Who better to share all she knows than self-confessed “nettie-nut”, Maria Tutaia, winner of 2 Commonwealth Games gold medals and one of netball’s biggest stars? Maria first pays tribute to key people and events from her childhood and adolescence; followed by the history of the game, essential gear, rules, positions and a truly thorough approach to preparation and skill development at all levels. The whole book is personalized with childhood memories, recipes, fun facts, tips and advice studded throughout. A must-have for coaches and aspiring players.

BOOKS
Tickle my Ears, by Jörg Mühle, Gecko Press $14.95
This is a novel to make you pause. It opens with a vividly haunting description of the painting. We’re then introduced
to three different characters, -- the owner of the painting, the forger and the artist herself. With each character comes an immersion into a different time and place. We feel the cold and damp of seventeenth century Holland, smell its earthy atmosphere. We similarly get to experience buzzy 1950s New York, alive with jazz, and a positive upbeat vibe. It all adds up to one intriguing story of art collecting and art forgery, trust, marriage, aging and death. Smith is an exceptional writer; he creates three living, breathing worlds with rooms and landscapes and cityscapes and pain and hope and love and loss. A beautiful work of art.

ARTS
The Great Plate 2016 50 artists: boundless directions
A
t a time when all of Whangarei is thinking about community art spaces, The Quarry Arts Centre is giving you an opportunity to get involved in local art and help build on Northland’s already established artistic reputation.
Now in its 8th year, the Quarry Arts Centre’s ‘Great Plate’ annual fundraiser is fast approaching. The event offers artists the opportunity to transform the humble plate into an unpredictable and exciting work of art. There are no limitations or rules around what can be done with the plate which makes this event unique every year. In previous years artists have morphed the humble Great Plate into amazing pieces of sculpture, paintings, mobiles, and even spaceships. “We love the huge variety within the Great Plate exhibition, we feel so privileged to be supported by our community in this unique, creative way.” says the Art Centre Manager Ali Goodman. This year the iconic exhibition will showcase the

talents of 50 renowned artists in a unique and creative way. Starting with a locally made ceramic plate, artists are given free reign to transform it, using an array of mediums, techniques, and inspirations into a stunning work of art. The continued success of this annual fundraiser is due to the generous support from the arts community. Artists freely give their time, skills and passion to create 50 amazing works of art to display and auction through TradeMe. “The Great Plate is our opportunity to push these artists’ work out into the world, and to raise the funds to enable them more opportunities”. Each plate is exhibited in the Yvonne Rust Gallery from 5pm July 7th at a collaborative exhibition. While the Great Plate works as a fundraiser, there is the added bonus of exposure for participating artists and also potential for the public to snap up a unique artwork. The public are very welcome to attend the opening and get a jump start on the TradeMe bidding war. With minimum bids starting at just $40.00 this is an excellent
chance to purchase amazing affordable artwork from some truly outstanding artists whilst participating in a worthy cause. The auctions are online for one week only! We will have computers set up in the Yvonne Rust Gallery here onsite at the Quarry Arts Centre in Selwyn Ave Whangarei so supporters are able to bid and donate from the very start of the show. Only a 5 minute walk from Whangarei central, the Quarry Arts Centre is a unique and creative space offering everything needed to develop and pursue artistic ambitions. The site facilitates a multitude of workshops ranging over different mediums, techniques and styles. Home to a ceramics and clay store, gallery, café, and local artist studios, the Quarry Arts Centre is the perfect place to develop your artistic talents, or venture down a new creative path. The Great Plate Art Auction is an opportunity to not only get your hands on an original one of a kind artwork, but also a chance to invest in the future development in one of Whangarei’s most well-loved communities.
The Wallace Arts Trust Collection 1931-1996 April 24- 3 July 2016
T
he Whangarei Art Museum are pleased to present an exhibition showcasing the remarkable collection of works by Sir Mountford Tosswill Woollaston from the Wallace Arts Trust. Born in rural Taranaki in 1910, long and famous resident in the Nelson district, knighted in 1979 for services to the arts, Toss Woollaston was the veteran of the longest, toughest and best-fought battle for recognition ever won by a New Zealand painter against the resistance of an ambivalent Kiwi public. From the early 1930s he led the struggle to gain acceptance for modern art in New Zealand, and through his life and work inspired generations of new artists to follow his example. In 1995 the James Wallace Arts Trust acquired an unparalleled collection of works of art by Woollaston, then widely acknowledged as New Zealand’s greatest living painter. The group of works included paintings and drawings representing high points in the artist’s achievement over six decades of his career from 1931 to 1994. Following this magnificent acquisition the Trust continued to acquire key works by Woollaston, including major late works, compiling what was in Woollaston’s own assessment the most comprehensive representation of his oeuvre held together in any single collection. More important masterpieces have been added to the collection since the death of the artist, including his last completed and signed work, the magnificent Male Nude of 1996, which shows that Woollaston was painting at the height of his powers almost to the very end of his long life.

While the Wallace collection of works by Woollaston covers the whole of his long career, it is especially strong in late masterpieces by the artist, painted after the death of his beloved wife Edith Woollaston in 1987. At this time Woollaston was radically reassessing his career and moving his painting in bold new directions. After a lifetime of hardship, in the 1980s and ‘90s he achieved public accolade and financial success, and entered a glamorous new phase of his life when he moved regularly between the USA and New Zealand. Powerful portraits and sensational landscapes resulted from this late burst of energy from Toss’s brush. Woollaston’s acute eye for the ever-changing effects of light and colour as they play on the architecture of landforms and on the bodies of the people he loved are nowhere more in evidence than in his late masterpieces in the Wallace Arts Trust Collection. A special feature of the exhibition is the sequence of over 80 studies of ‘Erua’, a Greymouth schoolboy whom Woollaston employed as a model in the early 1960s. ‘Erua’ (a pseudonym chosen to protect the young man’s identity) was Maori and his strongly Polynesian features intrigued the artist as a challenge to his observational abilities and draughtsmanship. Many of the drawings Toss produced over the two-year period in which he had Erua as a model were reproduced in a book, entitled Erua, in 1966. The Wallace Arts Trust acquired 80 of these drawings in 2014 and this is the first time after nearly 40 years that the majority of the Erua sequence will be shown together.

Y
PHILIPPA MANNAGH
ou all know of me as “a Budget Advisor with the Anglican Care Centre” and so this month I thought I would take the time to introduce the Centre and give you an idea of what goes on here. The Anglican Care Centre has been around for 22 years; we offer free budgeting advice and affordable counselling. Our team consists of 8 NZFFBS Trained Budget Advisors, 9 Counsellors with varying counselling skills, 1 senior’s worker and 3 Office staff. Our service is classed as holistic “dealing with or treating the whole of something or someone and not just a part” and interwoven into the services we provide are courses that we run. Our website www.whgcare.org.nz or www.facebook.com/Whangarei AnglicanCareCentre are updated regularly, keeping you in touch with what is happening, when it’s happening and how you can get involved. The two courses I am heavily involved with (along with budget advising) are the Senior Chef Course, which is a free course, run over an 8 week period (on a Thursday am or pm) for older adults (anyone over 65). On this course you can learn, or improve on your practical food and nutrition skills, it’s social, informative and hands on focusing on cooking for one or two. The second is Shop with a List – in my role as a budget advisor I come across people who are struggling with the cost of food, how to make ends meet and who need inspiring when it comes to cooking – this course is focused on budgeting hints and tips, menu and meal planning and it too is hands on. This course is run between 9.30 and 12.30 on a Tuesday once a term, with a $7 charges to cover the cost of food and photocopying. If you would be interested in joining us at any of the courses that are available here at the Anglican Care Centre please give us a call on 09 4376397 or pop in and say hi.

t’s a fine line sometimes. Let’s be honest, it’s easy to feel yourself sinking and losing sight of the person you are, not just the label you have become day after day. Don’t get me wrong, this label is treasured and never taken for granted. I’m talking about when you lose sight of the other areas in your life. Partners can become ships in the night and “mum” and “dad” soon become your first names. Sometimes you dream of the dating years again and wonder what it would be like to have 24 hours together to see what you are both into these days. Deep conversations are interrupted with, “Dirty nappy!” or “Mum she hit me!” or “He looked at me funny!” When you start talking… everyone does, in unison! One may get a sneaky little cuddle in the kitchen or a sway of a dance to an old song, only to be mauled be three little people wanting that same attention. Lately, we have decided to get the pecking order around here sorted. Not much has changed in terms of routines but what has, has made way for a massive shift in the time together we now demand and put first again. It’s the little things that can bring you together. Maybe a fun night out, a long bath, date nights, a later dinner under candlelight, a dance, a good laugh. Isn’t it funny how simple these things can sound but can be the first to go? Lately, we have put ourselves back as the main focus. If mum and dad are happy, everyone else is happy and it’s working for us. It’s not always easy and it’s a conscious decision at first, but very soon it all comes back to you. As life passes and days speed up, it’s so

easy for each day to become the same. School lunches, work, after school activities, dinner, homework, bed…. By injecting some little task’s into your love life, as simple as holding eye contact again, lunch dates or meeting someone at the door with a smile instead of a frantic ‘help me now, get in the door’ frown, can go a long way. Everything needs work to stay afloat and this includes you and your other half. Don’t forget them in this crazy busy, child centered world we live in.
