Editor’s Note
Y
our life is a journal, so write in it.
Hello to all our faithful SAVVY readers! It’s fantastic to be back in the office again after years of casual freelance work and raising little mini-me’s at home. I’m ready to ruffle the pages of our popular lifestyle magazine, expose passionate local stories and introduce a few new topics to gaze your eyes over on a lazy Saturday. I sat at my new desk the other week enjoying a hot coffee, office banter and proofing stories for our upcoming issues. As I highlighted the pages and scribbled notes throughout my fresh new notebook, I had to pause for a moment as I noticed something serendipitous. The ink in the pink highlighter was wearing thin and old sellotape clung to the side. I turned the pen over only to find my name “Pippa” still on the end where I had claimed it as mine in a stationary wandering office. I remember the frustration clearly. Who knew where all the pens went, but when you needed them the most they were never there. I made a plan one day as a fresh faced advertising co-ordinator to name my stationary and cover the name so it couldn’t rub off. This was my answer to overcoming the daily annoyance and to get on with my faced paced role. Turns out, my plan worked. This pen was the same faithful highlighter from nine years ago. My seat had been waiting for me. I am excited to see what this next chapter may bring for our local magazine. I hope you will join me on this SAVVY journey as we feature more of you, the people, to share your unique life journals so that others may be inspired. May you enjoy a safe and blessed Christmas.

atrina Ward, (34) of Waipu was the kid who won all the colouring competitions. Fast-forward to today and her love of art saw her ditch a secondary school teaching career for a life of creativity and balance. Recently relocating from the bright city lights, Katrina’s family now enjoy a lifestyle made up of beef farming, juggling their two children Beau (3 1/2) and Ninia (2) and her personally driven brand Outie - creating masterpieces with dresses, blogs and personalised profiles on canvas. Colouring in books for adults are what you will find her designing these days; the latest mindful craze to unwind, unplug and touch base with your childhood self again. “A client asked me if I would make a colouring in book. Once I did the first one, I wanted to do more as I was more confident. The drawings are fun and people wanted them,” she says. “Drawing is so relaxing, it’s about allowing yourself the time to have leisure and letting yourself to do something

easily rewarding without costing too much money.” After graduating with a Double Major in Fine Arts and a Master of Art History, Katrina went on to complete a Post Graduate Diploma in Teaching. She spent eight years teaching English and Art History at Marist Girls High School in Auckland before running her own business from home and concentrating on professional homemaking. Outie’s roots began in Auckland four years ago while she was pregnant, designing popular maternity t-shirts then dresses as they were hard to come by at that time. Her working hours now comprise of nap times but she can also literally juggle the cuddles from her toddlers whilst drawing one handed on her large digital tablet. Portrait and photography work is designed on the tablet making Katrina laugh at how far she has come in the technology world, being quite anti media before kids came along. “I work while the kids are doing their art at our large

Katrina makes lifestyle choices daily she says, agreeing that it is easy to loose site of balance and get too busy. Colouring in for adults has been found useful in many health areas including managing depression, pain and anxiety. When things get stressful, “colour yourself a bit of blue,” she cheerfully comments.

nthony Phillip Hawkins, better known as Huck, passed away at the Whangarei Hospital recently while there for a check-up.
The 53-year-old was a director of Harrisons Carpet and Beds ‘R’ Us in Whangarei. He is survived by his wife Christine who described him as her “best mate”. “He was just a very good man, cheeky, challenging, and (he) had fun in whatever he did. Stress wasn’t a factor for him,” Mrs Hawkins said. “He was a good businessman who loved to cut a deal but was
always very fair. “He always used to say ‘good things come to good people’.”

Born in Motueka, he moved to Whangarei with his mother and three brothers at primary school age and attended Ngunguru School and Tikipunga High School. His first job was delivering telegrams on bicycle and later did various other jobs, including painting and planting pine trees. The Hawkinses got married in 1984 and went on many overseas trips together. Mrs Hawkins said the seven years they spent travelling around the
world were among their best times, especially the seven months

on a motorcycle through India, Nepal, Tibet, Vietnam, and China. A devout rugby player, Mr Hawkins played for Ngunguru where his uncle donated farmland towards the building of a sports complex. He quit playing about three years ago after participating in the
Golden Oldies tournament in Sydney where he played halfback for the Whangarei Old Boys’ side. Mr Hawkins’ other passions included fishing, scuba diving, snorkelling and skiing. Mr Hawkins and Kevin Jones started working together at Harrisons Carpet One about 20 years ago and became coowners five years later. “He was a straight talker, an honest and happy guy who enjoyed life,” Mr Jones said. Mr Jones also played in the Golden Oldies’ tournament. New Zealand Chambers of Commerce Northland chief executive Tony Collins said Mr Hawkins was active in the business community and a strong advocate of Whangarei being a great place to live and work in. “He was an example of how you can be hooked to a national franchise and still manage to contribute to your local community,” he said. “He was always very positive about Whangarei, was a good and accepting person and he knew his community very well.” Mr Collins said at 53, the businessman was still young and had left behind a wonderful family. The Whangarei business community is mourning the sudden death of a prominent businessman and sports enthusiast. Our kindest regards are with the family.

t’s Christmas time, time to celebrate. The party and social invitations will be flying in . . . the barbeque, the work dinner, the girl’s night out, yours or hubby’s work function, the holiday at the beach, the end of year prize giving. All these functions need a special look, all different, all important. From the moment you step out of the front door you become the person that everyone sees you as. So make sure you look your best this Christmas! There is a dress for every occasion this season, but this Christmas has to be ‘The Christmas Day Dress’ Christmas. With so many bright florals, plains, checks, spots, patterns and striped combinations of dresses to choose from, with elbow, cap or short sleeves, every woman will find the perfect Christmas Day dress this year. The barbeque and holiday attire is easy to sort. Shorts are back for those lucky girls with great knees! ¾, 7/8 pants and capri length pants are still very popular, teamed back with a cotton shirt or oversized tee, and you are comfortable and tidy. The cotton shift dress is always easy and cool. For the more formal functions the dress is going to cover all bases for every body shape. Fitted short, shift dress, waisted full skirted 50’s looks, maxi elegant, maxi casual, rouched pleated ruffed, there are some fabulous looks to suit that formal function then wipe your shoes off and casual it down for the barbeque. … it’s party time again . . . and time to look fantastic!

BEACH fantasy WENDY ROELANTS TALKS TO ALI EGGINTON FROM TUTUKAKA BEACH SHOP ABOUT THIS SEASON’S HOTTEST TRENDS IN SWIMWEAR.
N
o matter what your shape or size, this season’s trends in swimwear cater for everyone. Athletic, retro, florals, prints, after-swim and new fabrics are all things to look out for this summer. High necklines are a dominant trend merging active wear with swimwear creating an athletic-swim look. More women are favouring swimwear that will take them paddle boarding, surfing or kayaking, a day out on the boat, on the beach or by the pool. Whether you go for a one or two-piece suit, the athletic-looking high neck and racer back are on-trend, and coupled with a rashguard or sun vest will give essential protection from the sun. For those of you who just love the retro look, a high waisted pant, teamed with a bikini or tankini top, draws inspiration from the 50’s and 60’s. Florals, funky patterns as well standard block colour and classic black are all strong for summer 2015. Mix and match
tops and bottoms is key bikini style this season, making your beach holiday wardrobe a breeze. Technology has enabled change in swim wear fabric. Neoprene is on trend this summer for bikinis and one-pieces. Traditionally only used for wetsuits, in any colour you like so long as its black, can now be printed in vibrant patterns, colours and styles. Spandex mesh garments are popular trending afterswim. We have seen this fabric in the gym, allowing the skin to dry quickly after working out. It now extends to the pool, to the beach and on the boat. Kaftans, dresses and sarongs made in this fabric that can get wet over your swimwear and feels dry instantly. When choosing a swimsuit, Ali’s number one tip is: plan to buy your swimwear before that day out on the beach or boat. Give yourself time to try on different styles and sizes. Bring a friend who can give honest feedback. Be confident and happy in your new swimwear.
All swimwear shown is available at Tutukaka Beach Shop where you can enjoy relaxed Christmas shopping & hassle free parking at the coast plus cafes and restaurants are just a few steps away.

Top reasons why you should invest in your skin
It’s the most

AT CACI WHANGAREI WE UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF SKIN CONFIDENCE AND SOMETIMES LOOKING AFTER YOUR SKIN CAN TAKE TIME AND BE COSTLY, HOWEVER IT’S SO IMPORTANT TO INVEST IN YOUR SKIN TO KEEP IT HEALTHY FOR MANY YEARS TO COME.

ur skin is with us for life, and it needs to last the long haul – that’s right, even longer than that expensive handbag… so it’s worth looking after! Here are our top reasons why it’s worth
investing in your skin.
Invest in yourself You only get one skin, so look after it! Unlike shoes or clothes, skin can’t be swapped when it’s starting to look a bit worn out. To keep it looking healthy and youthful, it’s important to use appropriate skin treatments and skin care. Using a mix of treatments can help improve the tone and texture of your skin, so if you have some skin concerns, now is a good time to consider a skin correction programme.
It’s important for your general health Your skin is your body’s largest organ, so just like your body, it needs looking after too. Your epidermis (top layer

Three Hairdressing Stylists Win TOP NZ AWARDS magine entering your very first hairdressing competition, only to win not only a Regional first place, but a National first place too! It seems impossible – and yet, for senior stylist Vanessa Carter of Three Hairdressing in Maunu,
a spectacular display of talent saw her taking out top place at her very first National competition. Early in October, a number of Three Hairdressing’s talented stylists took to the runway in Auckland, showcasing their skill and creativity across a variety of events at the NZARH Supreme Awards 2015. For Vanessa,
her first foray into the world of competitive hairdressing was an eye-opening experience – the nerves, the sleepless nights, the endless practice…. and the absolute shock of her success! “I was definitely not expecting anything, being my very first competitions! explains Vanessa of her recent win! ‘so when I heard that I had won first place for The Cut, Senior Stylist, and at a National level – I was more shocked than excited I think!” Vanessa’s clients are also overjoyed for her – and are thoroughly enjoying telling their friends and family that their stylist is officially the top in NZ! Misty Fenton, an apprentice stylist at Three Hairdressing, is also buzzing after having taken out second place for The Colour, Next Generation. With entrants competing from around New Zealand, this is a phenomenal result for Misty, and it has inspired her to continue in the competitive circuit. “I had really only hoped to pick up new tips and tricks,” says Misty of her experience at the awards, “so it was a real confidence boost to come second. Entering competitions at this level is a scary experience – but I think I might be addicted to them now!” Three Hairdressing is proud of their competition success on a regional and national level, and with salon co-owner Hazel Newman also taking home 3 award placings, and the salon being named as finalists at the recent KITOMBA Business Awards, this popular local salon is fast becoming one of Northland’s top hairstyling locations. Congratulations to the team at Three Hairdressing – outstanding success on a National scale!

All boxed in I DON’T, I CAN’T, I’LL NEVER…
T
hese are words we hear and use everyday. Small words really compared to the impact they can have. I don’t wear those. I can’t do that. I’ll never win. Doesn’t sound very uplifting does it? But this is what we tell others and ourselves regularly; we give ourselves an excuse not to try by convincing ourselves it’s beyond our control. I am a firm believer that you can achieve anything you set your mind to; whether that’s fitting into a new outfit, achieving a challenging goal or having something that you once thought you couldn’t. The hard part is setting your mind to it, thinking about it as a definite, if not at least a possibility. By using the words; can’t, don’t, or never you stop thinking about what you need to do to achieve your goal and start thinking about all the reasons you won’t. Goodbye daydream, hello rainy day.
When we say I don’t, I can’t or I never; we’re giving ourselves a boundary, a limit and taking away our own right to choose. To choose means we have options; we have infinite choices and whether it happens or not is entirely up to us. It also comes with responsibility, risk and reward. The responsibility of doing the work to get the outcome we want; like going to the shop and buying the outfit, or test-driving cars to find the right one or even going on a date to see if they’re someone special. And the risk of it not being as you expected; the outfit isn’t quiet right, the car was a lemon, your date wasn’t a good match. But without risk you won’t get reward and you deserve the reward; you look amazing wearing it, the car you got is great or you get to keep the perfect partner. To put this all into context, earlier this month I got to capture gorgeous portraits for the wonderful Erika Blank;
a switched on, up-and-comer, in the real estate world. With most real estate agents headshots looking similar to each other, she wasn’t going to be boxed in by the status quo and together we decided to create personal branding imagery that was specifically tailored to her career. Erika knew what she wants the world to see and that’s what she created. And you should do the same, decide what you want and go after it. So if we think about it, it’s not a matter or can’t, don’t, or I never, but am I willing to step outside of the box I’ve created for myself to take the risk and responsibility, to get the reward? The choice is yours but I say yes, you are worth it.

desire to work with people and a passion for helping them look and feel good are the key ingredients which make up a good hairdresser or beauty therapist. If this sounds like you, coupled with great personal presentation, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn, then NorthTec can teach you all the theory and techniques required to launch yourself into the business. NorthTec graduates are sought after by employers and many are now working in the industry locally. Others go on to self-employment in their chosen field, or take their skills and use them overseas in the international world of beauty. It’s a great field to get into and offers opportunities for employment in many settings, from salons to spas, hotels, resorts and cruise ships, or working in the retail sector. Studying hairdressing at NorthTec prepares you for the real world of professional styling. You’ll be based at our purpose-built salon at the Raumanga campus, which has the feel of a working environment, complete with open days for paying public customers. Not only will you develop key hairdressing techniques, you’ll also gain confidence and the communication and customer service skills you need to succeed in the hairdressing industry. The Certificate in Hairdressing (Level 3) is equivalent to completing the first year of an industry apprenticeship and will teach you key hairdressing skills like long hair styling, colouring, blow-waving, setting hair and an introduction to cutting. You’ll also learn about hairdressing products and how to sell them. Once you’ve completed the programme you can go on to the Certificate in Hairdressing Practice, also at level 3 but including some level 4 hairdressing unit standards. Equivalent to the second year of an industry
apprenticeship, you’ll learn a range of intermediate skills including scissor, clipper and razor cutting, advanced long hair styling, permanent colour, foiling and corrective treatments and finger waving. You’ll also further develop your interpersonal skills and professional manner, in particular through completing a 60-hour work placement in the local industry. NorthTec hairdressing students are regular winners at industry competitions for trainees, and frequently have a job lined up before graduation. When it comes to the beauty industry, NorthTec’s Certificate in Beauty Therapy is a level 5 qualification, reflecting the skills and knowledge required to apply a range of face and body treatments. Students learn how to perform a wide selection of beauty therapy skills including facial and body treatments, Swedish body massage, manicures and pedicures, epilation, skin care and make-up. You’ll gain hands-on experience consulting with clients and develop key skills in communication and customer service, whilst performing treatments to a high standard. This programme also offers students the opportunity to gain an internationally-recognised City & Guilds qualification. NorthTec beauty therapy students also get the chance to take part in industry competitions, fashion shows and community events. To find out more about this rewarding and creative industry training, contact NorthTec on 0800 162 100 or visit www.northtec.ac.nz.

The opportunities are endless
Tenaya Hokai,
NorthTec beauty student “I moved back from Australia to do this course. I checked out other beauty training options but NorthTec’s course had a better learning structure and qualifications than the others. I’ve come from no working experience to a learning experience that includes client days, reception work, and people contact skills. “From our work experience here I’ve been offered a job. Our tutors put on events so we can network with the industry, and my work has come directly from doing this course. I will step straight into the job when the course finishes. “Longer term I want to start my own global business creating a make-up line. I can see a gap that I can meet. I am going to achieve this. Rosacea skin is extra sensitive
I suffer from rosacea which gets much worse in the summer months and really stresses me out. Can you give me any tips on how to deal with this. - Julie, Whangarei.
R
osacea is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition which generally affects the face causing flushing eopisodes eventually followed by bouts of persistent facial redness. The redness, like a patch of sunburn, may not go away and occurs because hundreds of tiny blood vessels near the surface of the facial skin dilate (expand). It can also produce small, red, pus-filled pustules or bumps and the nose can sometimes become swollen. This distressing condition is greatly aggravated by heat and sufferers from rosacea not only cite more frequent bouts of redness during the summer, but they also seem to last longer. When you feel your face heating up, grab a cold drink, suck on some ice, or apply a cold compress to your face to bring your skin’s temperature down. Everybody needs to shield their skin from the sun, but rosacea skin is extra sensitive and even the slightest unprotected sun exposure can trigger an outbreak. If you’re going to be spending time outside, wear a hat, find an umbrella, and slather on some sunscreen. I like the natural Oasis Sun SPF30 range available from www.healthpost.co.nz and many good health stores. Enlist the help of an aloe plant which we are fortunate to have an abundance of here in New Zealand. You can apply aloe directly from the plant (you just have to snap off a stem) to help quickly reduce inflammation by soothing and cooling the skin. Kuswera Zuro herbal skin cream has been shown over the years to be particularly beneficial for rosacea and contains two potent natural anti-inflammatories -
African potato tuber and Jojoba. Apply sparingly twice daily. Available from www. littleherbalcompany.co.nz Try to only use natural soap products on your face and avoid shampoos and conditioners which are overladen with chemicals. Again, your local health store will have great chemical free alternatives. If you have rosacea you are probably well aware of the food and drink triggers that set it off so try to avoid them – prevention is always better than cure. If you are newly diagnosed try to keep a food diary to see what your triggers are. Stress can cause rosacea to flare up so do try to keep anxiety levels under control – not easy I know particularly at this time of the year ! And lastly thank you to all my readers for your support and kind words over the year. I enjoy writing this column so much and am happy to be able to help so many of you. Have a Merry Christmas and a happy healthy New Year.

HEALTH
Corinne’s 12 Do’s of Christmas They call it the silly season for one reason – we all go a little bonkers at this time of the year. We eat too much, we drink too much, and most of us become as inactive and idle as a heavily pregnant rhinosaurus. It’s generally all in the name of having fun, celebrating another successful year, and being blessed with the presence of friends and family.
The 6 Do’s:
you won’t be able to talk yourself out of doing it so easily, and you’ll have more fun and competition whilst doing it!
1
PLAN: All year we complain that we don’t have enough time to exercise. Well, now you do. If you’ve booked three weeks off work then you should plan to be doing an hour of exercise five days of each week. I know you think it’s essential relaxation time, but your body’s ability to relax is so much greater if you’ve exercised. Be wise and exercise: your body will love it.
2
EXERCISE IN THE MORNING: An hour’s stroll along the beach, a forty minute jog to the local park and back, or an intense twenty minute bodyweight home circuit workout, is the perfect start to a fantastic day. Then you’ve got the rest of the day to do whatever you please.
3
EXERCISE WITH A BUDDY: If you commit and make a plan to exercise with a friend or family member, then
4
EAT BEFORE YOU GO OUT: If you have a Christmas party or other social function to attend, make sure you have something healthy and satiating before you leave the house. This way, you’ll be less likely to over-eat and won’t be tempted to have more than you should.
5
attach itself to your posterior, and be able to remember the hilarious events of that wonderful night, then alternate your alcoholic beverages with non-alcoholic ones. And don’t sit beside or at the nibbles table – this is an instant invitation to absentmindedly eat more than you need to.
CARRY A WATER BOTTLE: This is an essential ingredient to have in your handbag! Drinking little and often comes with many bonuses: you’ll feel less hungry; you’ll be more energized; you’ll consume fewer calories via high-sugar, high-calorie drinks; and tomorrow’s hangover will be significantly reduced.
And if everything seems to fail and not go to plan, then remember the actions you take between New Years and Christmas are more important than the ones you take between Christmas and New Years. Be healthy, be merry and live it up! Best wishes for a happy and healthy festive time. Happy Fitmas to you all, and may the good times roll. See you in 2016.

FESTIVE
food &wine
For YVONNE LORKIN this festive season it’s going to be all about stretching the boundaries a tad, pushing the boat out and serving something with a little bit of an edge to my friends just to keep them on their toes. How about embracing Albarin˜o, Ripasso, Petit Verdot or Gru¨ner Veltliner? Or some chardonnay with a sulphide edge, syrah from Waiheke or perhaps the best French champagne around for under fifty dollars? It’s all here in this selection of ten sips to rule your Yule… Waimea Nelson Albarin˜o 2015, $23 This is just a sensational local example of a classic Spanish white wine, scented with musky florals and stonefruit and packed with punchy apple skin and crushed stone minerals and zesty citrus flavours. I love it! And clearly so do wine judges as it’s just scooped a Pure Gold medal at the AirNZ awards. waimeaestates.co.nz
Vidal Legacy Chardonnay 2012, $50
This is one heck of a chardonnay and definitely not for the soft. I’m saying that because this multiaward winning wine has that intense, struck match, smoky character on the nose and palate that makes it seriously complex and Burgundian. Boasting grilled grapefruit, roast pineapple and toasty oak complexity which lingers super-long on the palate. Huge. vidal.co.nz
Zonin Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso 2013, $19.95
‘Ripasso’ essentially means ‘re-passed’ or ‘twice’ in Italian, and this is a technique whereby regular Valpolicella wine (blended from native grapes corvine, rondinella and molinara) is added to the skins and lees leftover from fermented Armarone wine. So not only does the Valpolicella take on an extra boost of colour, texture and flavour, it also gets an injection of extra alcohol from a second fermentation. This plush, velvety-textured red is chock-full of cherry and spicy berry flavours and is succulent and smooth on the finish. sapori.co.nz
TOP SIPS for the holiday season Mudbrick Onetangi Valley Syrah 2014, $27
long, quenching finish.
This is a wee wunderkind from Waiheke Island and it almost seems criminal to drink it so young. However I reckon they shouldn’t have made it taste so darn delicious so it’s actually their own fault. The solid fruit core is stitched together with all manner of fragrant spices and there’s that classic peppercorn lift that good syrah should have. The hint of smoke on the finish gives it extra complexity and I would love to be more disciplined, because this wine is going to absolutely wow over the coming years. mudbrick.co.nz
Greywacke Marlborough Pinot Gris 2013, $30
Pinot gris has proved an unstoppable force in this country, particularly over the last decade. Kiwis have grabbed this grape with gusto and it’s now our fourth most widely planted variety and our wine producers are now crushing a whopping 24000 tonnes of the stuff. That’s almost one and a half thousand times what they were processing in 2005! Kevin Judd of Greywacke has mastered the art of squeezing in as much luxuriously rich baked stonefruit, quince, apple and nashi notes into his while still maintaining fresh, lean, elegant acidity, a superb spicy lift and a
Brancott Estate Brut NV $17, Gloriously nutty, lemon shortbreadlike aromas waft forth and just command you to sip, in this cracker of a local methode´. “Good, honest bubbles” were the first words that occurred to me when I tasted this recently because it’s so well crafted and oozes charm and elegance for such a walletfriendly price. Crisp acidity, a full, smooth mouthfeel and superb length of flavour brings it into the what’s-not-to-love section for me. Widely available.
Champagne Drappier Carte d’Or NV, $49 This is such a pretty wine, pouring into the glass all shimmering soft gold, dazzling with the tiniest of pinprick bubbles snaking their way from the base to the rim. It’s ethereally light, with lifted lemon and sweet almond biscuit aromas. In the mouth it is generous, toasty and full, yet has beautiful balance, crispness and verve on the finish. French fizz like this for less than fifty? That’s outrageously good value for money in my book. glengarrywines.co.nz
Wirra Wirra Scrubby Rise Shiraz Cabernet Petit Verdot 2013, $18 When the Rugby World Cup final was broadcast, there’s a
high chance the crew at Wirra Wirra would have dusted off the giant, medieval siege machine erected on their front lawn and used it to hurl watermelons in the general direction of NZ. When the Melbourne Cup aired, the team most definitely would have pulled their collection of cut-out horses heads stuck on broomsticks from the cupboard and cantered them at full speed around the vineyard. It’s tradition. However you’ll be guaranteed a fair whack of seriousness when it comes to their wine. With fruit sourced from the home vineyards plus Adelaide Hills and Finniss River, they’ve crafted an intensely fruity, plum and blackberryladen beauty edged with seasoned leather and spice. Super-fresh acidity, tannins with great ‘chew’ and a warm, smooth finish make this exceptional value for money.
Big Sky Martinborough Gru¨ner Veltliner 2015, $23 Katherine and Jeremy at Big Sky have, for the last 10 years, been quietly getting on with the
job of crafting some seriously good wines from their deepgravel vineyards in Martinborough’s Te Muna terraces. This Gru ¨ ner is the newest addition to the portfolio, it’s a white grape native to Austria. With soft, limey, toast, seashell and sake-like aromas followed by juicy white peach and pepper flavours, it’s a highly fragrant and focused white.
Two Paddocks Central Otago Pinot Noir 2014, $55 Founder Sam Neill’s advice to prospective vineyard owners at the 2013 pinot noir conference went as follows. “Since you are approaching middle age, there are two inevitable things in your future. First, you will acquire a ride-on mower. Second, you will have an enlarged prostate. The mower is more fun than the prostate, so make sure you buy a good one. 72.2% of the people who own ride-on mowers have enlarged prostates. Statistically there just might be a connection”. His latest pinot is definitely more ‘boy band’ than middle aged though. Foppish in attitude, smooth and sexily fragrant with sweet, dried herbs and spicy notes and sinewy complexity on the finish; it’s an eager-to-please star.

Christmas Ham.
Beer & marmalade glazed ham.
BEER & MARMALADE GLAZED HAM Goes great with New Potatoes with Smoky Aioli (recipe below).
INGREDIENTS
NEW POTATOES WITH SMOKY AIOLI
1 cooked ham 330ml Stella Artois 150g orange marmalade 1 tsp smoked paprika 1 orange, thinly sliced 20 cloves
Celebrate with holiday CHRISTMAS HAM INGREDIENTS Smoked holly ham, water added, ham hock removed 400g light brown sugar 1 cup clover honey
METHOD Adjust the oven racks to accommodate a large covered roasting pan. Fit the pan with a shallow rack.
HAM
Preheat the oven to 180C. Unwrap the ham and rinse it under cold water. Place it on the rack in the roasting pan. Cover the pan with the lid and bake for half the estimated cooking time (total cooking time is about 20 minutes per pound). Halfway through the estimated cooking time, add the sugar and honey to a saucepan, cooking over medium heat until smooth and sugar is dissolved. Pour the mixture over the ham and continue baking the ham, basting occasionally with the
drippings while roasting. Check whether cooked at the end of the estimated cooking time by inserting a meat thermometer at a meaty point (not into fat or touching the bone). It should register 70C. Allow the ham to stand for 15 minutes before slicing so the juices set.
■ Wine match: Mission Reserve Chardonnay or Mission Reserve Pinot Noir, RRP $29.
Remove the ham from the oven and carefully smear the scored fat all over with the marmalade paste. Return to the oven and bake for a further 30 minutes or until golden, basting half way through. When you baste the ham you can decorate the top with slices of orange secured with cloves.
INGREDIENTS
METHOD Preheat the oven to 180C. Carefully slice under the rind of the ham at the base, then using your fingers carefully slide them between the ham rind and fat layer. The rind will come away easily but can tear so work slowly, gently forcing your fingertips between the layers. You need to retain as much fat as possible for scoring. This can be done with a small knife, but may result in an uneven, cut up surface. Using a sharp knife, score the fat in diagonal lines 3cm apart. Repeat from the other side of the ham to create a diamond pattern. Place the ham in a large baking dish. Pour 280ml of the beer over the ham. Place in the oven and bake for 40 minutes, basting with the beer half way through. In a small saucepan, combine the remaining 50ml beer, marmalade and smoked paprika. Bring to the boil and boil for 3 minutes then cool.
2 x egg yolks 1 tsp white wine vinegar 1⁄4 tsp salt 1⁄4 tsp smoked paprika 1 clove of garlic, crushed 100ml light flavoured oil, such as grapeseed or vegetable 50ml olive oil 150g new potatoes per person, scrubbed A bunch of chives, chopped
METHOD Place the egg yolks, vinegar, salt, smoked paprika and garlic in a bowl and whisk together. Add the oil, very slowly, drop by drop, whisking continuously until thick. Refrigerate until needed. Will keep in the fridge for a week. Place the potatoes in a saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring to the boil, salt the water then reduce to a simmer until tender. Serve the potatoes with the aioli and chopped chives. ■ Mission Estate recipes

The Grand Thai Restaurant Grand dining at its best
PHILIPPA MANNAGH
W
ith a selection of Thai dining in Whangarei now, it is easy to forget about your old favourites. It had been a while since hubby and I booked dinner at The Grand Thai Restaurant and as soon as we arrived (in all her grand-ness) I wondered why we hadn’t come back sooner.
experienced attentive wait staff throughout our dining experience. I opted for the scollops in oyster sauce as the main: broccoli, mushroom, onion, baby corn, carrot, capsicum and oyster sauce with a side of rice. My dining companion went for the garlic and pepper roasted duck, black pepper, garlic, onion and soya sauce.
I stood at the entrance way admiring the dominating stair well and chandeliers - envisaging images of when the Queen visited Northland and what the day must have been like for the grand lady. Seated promptly, we were soon offered a drink. I looked around as the little restaurant buzzed. The warmth of the lighting, dramatic art work on the walls and chatter amongst the filled room gave a welcoming atmosphere. I can’t go past a mixed appetiser when Thai is involved, to taste test a few different signature dishes. The dish is made up of a mini spring roll, money bag, curry puff and a satay chicken skewer - easily one of the best peanut sauces I had ordered. We also enjoyed the divine Hoy Jole dish which is prawn, pork and crab mixed with special herbs and spices wrapped in soya pastry. As always, the meals were beautifully presented and we
Both were very different dishes, but excellent all the same. The generous scollop dish was a delicate meal whereas the duck gave a bit of a punch with the pepper coming through. Half way through the meal we were checked on and offered more rice to accompany the stir-fries. Tonight we stopped to appreciate the traditional Thai food carving on our plates — an art in itself! For dessert, we chose the popular sweet banana sticky rice and the deep fried banana with Thai custard (a soft shade of green) and ice-cream. I am left thinking of the deep fried dish the next morning, that must be a good sign! Grand Thai Restaurant 2 Bank Street,Whangarei

Sort out heating needs this summer SARAH COUCHMAN FROM DÉCOR FRAME AND HEAT TALKS TO SAVVY READERS ABOUT WHY SUMMER IS THE BEST TIME TO GET WINTER HEATING SORTED…
S
ummer is here and now is a great time to be making good use of the long fine days to tend to your next winter season’s heating needs. Gather your wood and stack it with plenty of air circulating through and sheltered from rain. You’ll be glad you’ve got your winter heating sorted before the cold settles in.
Building / Renovating?
Now is an opportune time to install new units as there is less likelihood of being interrupted due to weather, giving all materials time to settle and air thoroughly before being put to the task.
Why Choose Freestanding Woodfires? Freestanding woodfires are versatile appliances, which give a quick heat from the unit as well as the exposed flue. Not only is this unit a heater for your home, but most have a capability to heat water, therefore helping you be less reliant on electricity. In the midst of a winter storm when the power goes out, a freestanding woodfire gives you the source of heat for hot water, cooking and warmth.
Convection Vs Radiant Convection heating means that the heat is evenly dispersed into the room via air movement allowing heat to migrate into separate rooms faster. This makes convection great for insulated homes with standard height ceilings and separate rooms. Radiant heat transfers into the home through slow, gradual soaking. You feel the benefit of the heat quicker, before it fills up to the ceiling, Perfect for the modern open plan style or older homes with high ceiling and little insulation.
Try the new Masport Heating App Let us do the work for you. Download the free Masport Heating App from www.masportheating.co.nz and we can help you find the woodfire that’s best for your home and even show you what it will look like in your home!

ow, the silly season is upon us… how time flies while we’re having fun! Yes, the craziness has begun, for all retailers and customers, as we all suddenly realise that we need things organised for the Xmas period and those wonderful visitors that come to stay up in our beautiful part of the world at this time of year. Time for family get-togethers and making sure our homes are ready for the festivities and one of those important areas are of cause the beds that our guests need to sleep in. I wonder how many of us actually sleep in our spare rooms and I think the small percentages that do are aware of the comfort of these beds, but sadly so many of us don’t. Our guests come to stay and smile in the morning, hopefully they are truthful when asked how they slept, and not in the back of their minds, secretly wanting to tell you how bad the

bed is…and how much they miss theirs at home! I know I’ve been there and done that and I know I am not alone on this issue! It is so important to offer our guests the best sleep we can afford, so I suggest we go spend a night in the guest bed and see just how good or bad they are. We at BedsRus have a great range of affordable, comfortable beds for your spare rooms, and I would recommend them all, but in particular for the guest bed, a Chiropractic approved bed range is ideal, as it has no weight limit, it will hold our larger guests who possibly weigh more than 110kg and has a 10 year warranty. othing can match timber for its infinite variety of natural markings and grains. Timber has always been a popular option outside. We’re seeing a resurgence of timber in interiors, which goes hand in glove with the return of an appreciate for craft production. The beauty of nature has long inspired home design and never more so than now. There’s a growing trend to bring more of the great outdoors into our living spaces. These days, with busy lives and smaller sections it’s common for most of us to spend 90% of our time inside, so perhaps it’s no surprise we’re bringing nature indoors to enjoy it where we spend the most time. This used to mean adding a few pot plants here and there. These days, bringing nature indoors means everything from flooring to walls to cabinetry and, of course, paint and stain colours. For some, nature conjures up images of the bold blooms of spring and summer, which can easily be achieved with touches of your favourite bold Resene paint colours, like those in The Range fashion colours fandeck. For others, nature means a connection to timber, and other raw and earthy finishes. Just as the bark of a tree protects the timber beneath, you need to make sure the timbers and other materials used in your home are well protected. Whether that be a clear finish on interior timber or concrete, or a stained finish on your exterior timber, plan the protection when you choose the materials so that the look you love keeps looking that way as long as possible. Then you can also relax safe in the knowledge that when the time comes to refresh or rejuvenate, a new coat or two of clear, stain or paint, will be all that’s needed. Much simpler than having to completely replace the original materials!
Bringing nature indoors means everything from flooring to walls to cabinetry
Some ideas to bring out the natural beauty in your home: • Rejuvenate faded timber joinery, floors and walls with Resene Colorwood natural wood stain and Resene Aquaclear. • Recreate a Scandi look with Resene Colorwood Whitewash. • Create a cocoon by staining your ceiling dark with Resene Colorwood, or add an airy ambience with Resene Colorwood Whitewash. • Protect concrete floors and benchtops with Resene Concrete Wax. • Enhance the look and colour of concrete pavers with Resene Concrete. • Rejuvenate exterior timber on weatherboards, fences, decks and more with the Resene Woodsman range.

A smashing little plant Kunzea Little Fox! By DEBBIE OLDFIELD
Philadelphus ‘Snowflake’ $12.50 Clematis Montana ‘Rubens’ $10
We have a new plant to the market which was discovered by our very own boss here at Alter-Natives - Ian Fox. It is a miniature, low growing Kanuka called ‘Little Fox’. Kunzea ‘Little Fox’ has a drooping habit with fine lime green foliage, it is quite similar looking to the popular ‘Acacia Limelight’ though its performance is better in that it tolerates a wider range of conditions. It will cope well with colder, drier, wetter, windier sites; it also does well in low fertility soil including clay, and coastal conditions. ‘Little Fox’ doesn’t have a flower, bit its nice fine foliage is what you buy it for anyway. It looks great planted on mass, and contrasts nicely with plants such as palms and coloured flaxs. Size wise it stays quite low, only eventually getting to about 1m tall, and 1.2m wide. It can be kept trimmed even smaller
at about 40cm. Kunzea Little Fox has a PVR (like a patent) on by Ian Fox of Alter-Natives. It is available from our nursery and is being distributed by licensees throughout NZ and is even on its way to Australia, USA, Europe and Japan! Ian is developing a number of other plants for PVR including a compact Coprosma and a very low growing & weeping tea tree, these are due to be released in 2016.

Arts and craftspeople sought for Re-Newed Artisans market
W
With so much creativity in Northland, we feel that an investment in the arts and culture is an investment in job creation in the Far North.
awata Ao Marama is a Creative Industries professional development agency, dedicated to the development of community creative spaces and programmes. We believe that access to opportunities for creative expression is crucial to
happy communities, and are committed to the development of free and affordable local community programs for all ages. Hot out of the Far North Thrive programme, a series of social enterprise Development workshops held over five months, across the far north, we are now seeking arts and craftspeople as stall holders for our first commercial venture ReNewed. An Arts and Crafts market, with a ‘trash to treasure’ upcycled theme, ReNewed will be held in the ‘Library Park’ precinct of Kaikohe as a monthly addition to the upcoming Kai Kohe Kohe Food Cooperative’s Night Market this Summer. Northland often cops a bad rap for its low socio-economic status but we see that ‘challenge breeds ingenuity’ and are proud to provide an avenue for the many talented people who live here. With so much creativity in Northland, we feel that an investment in the arts and culture is an investment in job creation in the Far North. By reinvesting a 30% commission from the commercial opportunities that we create, we aim to build funds for professional development workshops, the development of community creative hubs, and free and affordable local
community programs for all ages. Profits generated from our ReNewed market days over this summer will be directly used to build on the upcycled artisan theme, with a goal to develop collective Upcycled stalls at other local markets, investigating pop-up shop fronts rotated around the district, a permanent shop front in Kaikohe itself, and eventually a district wide Meet the Makers festival for 2017. As each commercial venture is established, further profits will then be used to fund community programmes and creative spaces. We now are seeking artists to be stall holders, and
musicians for a busker’s corner.
If this sounds like you, email wawata.ao.marama@gmail.com for an application form.
About the Kai Kohe Kohe Food Cooperative
K
ai Kohe Kohe Food Cooperative
is regenerating the local food economy by establishing a Thursday nightmarket, encouraging production and sale of fresh, healthy, locally grown food. The food economy has been degenerating on many levels over a number of years. Every dollar spent in supermarket monopolies for “jet lagged” food, only ten cents stays in the community. The current system is not economically or environmentally sustainable. Small local growers have not had easy access to the market, being shut out by big business. The cooperative seeks to change all that. Customers will be able to buy local produce online and then come to the market and pick up their purchase of fresher, healthier food. Producers will be able to sell their produce through the cooperative at a fair price and every dollar will stay in the community instead of being siphoned off.

When Time Stands Still Wife, mother, journalist...PHILIPPA MANNAGH reveals the highs, the lows and the challenges in life
Christmas – a time for giving DIANNE HARRIS is a budget advisor for the Anglican Care Centre
B
ut - where is the extra money coming from? Sometimes we spend money on things simply
because it’s what we’ve always done and then find that the spending has spun out of control.
Unfortunately the painful truth amongst many is that they
overspend over the Christmas holiday time to make the kids happy, buying toys and gadgets that will keep everyone content. Spend! Spend! Spend! Yes, giving gifts is a joy, but shopping to a list, with money you have, avoiding debt is most definitely the goal to aim for.. Dr. Seuss wrote: “What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come
from a store? What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more?” Thanks again for the opportunity to share with you over this year, from us all at the Anglican Care Centre we wish you all a blessed Christmas.
I
knew something was wrong when our often relaxed doctor began to panic. I didn’t want to let on to Miss 8 that anything worse than a dreaded needle in the arm may be on the cards soon. Her eyes looked into mine and we talked about being brave in hospital and sticking together. I hated to think of what was to come. When she was two months old we ended up in the emergency department with an array of tests to eliminate meningitis. The memories never fade and when the doctor told me that they would have to take out another lumbar puncture the blood drained from my face as I stood there in disbelief. Yesterday, my big baby girl was fine. When she came home from school with a headache on a sunny day I had put it down to dehydration and the fact that her small frame never stops running no matter how far the distance. The headache worsened that night turning into a high temperature and vomiting in the wee hours of the morning. Pain relief wouldn’t touch her so I knew something may be wrong. My heart broke. You can say from afar that procedures are the best things for them and you would do anything to help them and yet in the same sentence, you would run in front of a bus to prevent hurt to their bodies and a pain that you would rather have upon you. Ten-fold. The test came back and we were quarantined in Ward 2. Positive with Meningitis, a parents worst fear. The nights that followed were awful albeit special in a twisted way.
It was her and I against the world. I had been here before, we both had - over eight years ago on my very first Mothers Day. I rocked this small child in my arms all night. I cried the same tears over her body as she lay on the hospital bed, feeling helpless. No matter how big our children grow, they are still our precious little babies that were once so dependant on us. Time stood still this week, as her body continued in fight mode and we waited for results. I thought I had no more growth to my heart but yet it grew some more and offered a stretching pain that any stranger could see in a mothers eyes. Hold your children close. Take family very seriously and breathe in every memory. This Christmas, lets make this the priority. People, family, friends. Nothing else is more important than this.
