27 Be in to win

Who are you? Really? How honestly do you know yourself? When you look in the mirror do you see your past, your potential, your enemy or your best friend? Who looks back at you from those eyes and what do you say to them? My vision is to empower people, not just with portrait photography but also in all aspects of life, hence these words. Recently a client said something that has really stuck, she told me how she encourages her children to accept themselves as they are. “Accept your body, your personality, your likes and dislikes, accept that this is who you are and make peace with yourself.” “Make peace with yourself”, when phrased that way, we realise that we are often at war internally, trying to change ourselves for one reason or another. Without digging deep and going backwards trying to figure out why we feel this way, if we want to change we have to think here and now. We all have areas where we feel inadequate but thinking about them does nothing more than reinforce the negative idea, and that doesn’t help anyone feel better. Focus on positive thoughts about your present self and a positive mood will follow. You are smart enough, now. Pretty enough, now. You have enough things, now. Your body is beautiful, now. It is the only one you get, appreciate it. Be thankful for everything you get to achieve with it, for somewhere someone can’t even start what you’ve just finished doing. And teach this to others; lead by example, show your children that they are enough as they are, because you are. Advertising and media spend millions of dollars highlighting what they think we are lacking, don’t take any notice of their opinion or anyone else’s. It will never be as important as your opinion of yourself and that is under your control alone. With time we accept ourselves; you know the way your grandmother is happy just to wake up today and anything more is a bonus. What if we could harness that sense of self-assuredness in our youth? Where would you be if you learnt early in life that we would achieve anything we decide to do and steadfastly believed it? What if you stopped wasting time thinking of all the reasons why you can’t, accepted yourself and spent that time thinking of all the reasons why you can?

These Northland women are ...

WOW! by LEIGH BRAMWELL

LYNDA O’RORKE

doesn’t think of herself as an artist, despite undeniable talent in her chosen field and at least one piece that has become iconic in New Zealand. “The term ‘artist’ is a bit out there for me,” says the Paihia woman who created ‘Ocean Flower’, the artwork that turned heads here and internationally when it was shown at the World Of wearable Arts awards show in 2013. Lynda settles on the description ‘crafter’ to describe her work, which sprang from a background of sewing when she was a youngster who sewed all her own clothes. “My grandmother taught me how to sew on a treadle sewing machine,” she says, “and later I got into patchwork, and then became interested in surfaces and textures rather than traditional applique´.” Lynda has had another piece accepted for the three week Wearable Arts festival this year, which will be held from 24 September to 11 October in Wellington. She has entered the architecture section and spent about five months working on her entry, mainly at weekends and in the evenings. “It’s a long process, because you are all the time thinking about whether you’re going down the right track and whether it fits the brief,” she says. “You have to be determined and flexible, because what you start off thinking you were making may not be the end result.” And it’s not just about creativity, she explains. “The garment has to be able to be taken off and on quickly, and be robust enough to stand up to 21 shows. It also has to stand and bend the way you’ve visualised it.” Happily, Lynda enjoys the challenges, and likes nothing more than being in her sewing room “on a roll”, creating something she has designed and planned. However, she admits that she doesn’t love all types of sewing. “I hate making curtains, hemming trousers and sewing on buttons,” she laughs.

Lynda O’Rorke, left, with her entry in the Bernina Fashion Awards in Whangarei. This piece, named Ocean Flower, was accepted into WOW in Wellington in 2013. — Sarah Marshall Photography; At right is contemporary fibre artist Michelle Mayn in her studio in Kohukohu.

MICHELLE MAYN

Another Far North artist, will join Lynda as an exhibitor at this year’s World of Wearable Arts. Michelle works full time as a contemporary fibre artist in the tiny town of Kohukohu, which she describes as a very creative community. “There are a lot of artists here so people are on the same wavelength, and I feel supported,’ she says. “It makes it easy to stay focused, I can have a viable career here as an artist, and of course this place is very beautiful.’’ Michelle has a background in

traditional and contemporary Maori weaving from Unitec Art and Design and says her work is strongly influenced by the balance, form and pattern seen in traditional weaving. She works in both traditional harakeke (New Zealand flax) as well as modern fibres that respond to today’s urban environment. “But really I think it only all came together this year,” she says. “ Up until then I was developing and now I have the confidence that I can get the work out of my head and into reality.” “I haven’t been in the World and Wearable Arts before but I did go to one of the shows in Nelson and it was a fantastic experience – a bit like a

carnival in a different world. I said then that it would be great to enter and this year I decided to do it. I thought strategically that it would be good to do as I am establishing myself as an artist.” Friends suggested she should enter the ‘bizarre bra’ section but it wasn’t included this year so Michelle’s entry is in the Air New Zealand category. The brief is for a work that reflects New Zealand, and Michelle spent about eight weeks creating her piece. “I don’t have any expectations, although a little prize would be helpful,” she says. “But mainly I will just be really excited to see it on stage and coming to life.”

ormer professional hula dancer Taramati Chanel has relocated to New Zealand from Hawaii. With a career that spans over 20 years, Taramati has trained numerous dancers throughout Hawaii and the United States. Her list of passions and experience is impressive, including a successful modelling career. Taramati started a fashion show production company, The Catwalk Company and has over 20 years experience in the trade show industry, coordinating special events.

learn more about Hawai’i and Hula. Taramati’s sessions will focus on Hula for health and it is a great way to stay active while having fun. The classes are geared for all ages starting from 15 and dance experience is not necessary. Tara loves dancing for relaxation, fun and when homesick over the cooler months here, she finds it the best medicine to connect to her homeland. “Hula is certainly good for the heart, body and soul.” “This is a new and different program and I am excited to offer these new Hula classes in Whangarei.” The cost is $70 for 6 sessions and $60 for seniors and community card holders. At the end of the class, participants will have a better understanding of the Hula, having learned the basic Hula steps that will be incorporated into a Hula or two. To register or for more information, please visit www.TaraChanel.com or call 09-436-2332.

Upon arrival in New Zealand four years ago, the couple spent time travelling throughout the country to find the perfect place to settle down. The friendly couple have chosen Whangarei to share her love of dance. “Whangarei was the right spot,” she says. “There are such warm and wonderful people here. Northland is close to the ocean, hospital and airport and away from the big city,” she says. One of her many expertise is hula dancing. “As long as there are wiling students, they have a willing teacher.” During these classes the music is personalised to suit the group and is limited to 15 ladies. “Imagine you are in the tropics, forget about the winter and meet other people,” she says. Creative ways to recreate your look T

he Warmer weather is nearly here. Time to lose the coat and the cold, the scarf and the sniffles and embrace all the fun these warmer weather months have in store. And of course you want to look good doing it as well. To help you find that perfect look, author and singer/ songwriter Tanille Edwards offers her top five beauty tips inspired by her romance novel Broken — the tale of Milan, a high school senior who is hearing impaired as well as being a burgeoning supermodel. Like Milan, Tanille's tips aim to help you conquer your insecurities and find a look that's uniquely your own.

bridge of your nose and your cheeks. This will keep your skin looking radiant and protected as well. Make the unnatural natural. Use a light sweet pink blush and apply it before you apply concealer for a look that's very natural. Once you're finished, line your inner lower lids with white eye liner and use a black eyeliner to complement your upper lash line. Finally, apply mascara but remember to go light. Don't be afraid to coordinate your look. Going matchy-matchy with your eye shadow and outfits isn't always a bad thing. If you are going for a more causal warm weekend look consider going with a very light dusting of eye shadow. Choose a shade that matches your outfit. This will give you a put together look without a lot of effort.

Pack your tool kit. Never leave home without moisturizer, eyeliner inside the lower lash line and lip gloss. You never know when any of these items will be called into action. Create eye-catching eyes. Pump up your eye color by coordinating a complementary smokey eye for a look everyone will notice and no one will forget.

Applying any of these tips will give you a fresh new look for the year's freshest season so don't delay. Get creative because redefining yourself is something you can do and enjoy every single day. Dark leafy greens, dried beans, good for iron levels

Herbalist LES helps address health issues the natural way I’m concerned about my daughter. Her iron levels are very low and she is finding it slowgoing to raise them. Her ferritin is now up from 11 to 14 but that is still very low. Do you know of the best way for a vegetarian/vegan to improve their iron levels? I’d appreciate your advice. This is a common problem with vegetarians/vegans. Ferritin is a type of protein that binds to iron — in fact, most of the iron that is stored in the body is bound to ferritin, which makes it a good marker for how much iron you have. Iron is an essential mineral that is a part of the protein haemoglobin, which is found in all the body’s red blood cells. Haemoglobin works to supply the muscles and other organs with enough oxygen, as well as to help the body to convert carbohydrates and fat into energy. There are two types of dietary iron: heme and non-heme. Meat, especially red meat, is the best source of heme iron. When we eat meat, we consume the blood proteins and the haemoglobin that are contained in the body of the animal. In contrast, nonheme iron comes primarily from plants. Non-heme iron actually comprises the majority of the iron that we consume in our diets. Rice, wheat, oats, nuts, fruits, vegetables, beans, and fortified processed foods are typical sources of non-heme iron.

Drink more water throughout the day Heme iron is typically absorbed at a higher rate than non-heme iron, which means that the body more easily absorbs iron from animal products than iron derived from plant foods. If you’re a vegetarian, the absorption rate of the heme iron from animalbased sources ranges from 15-35 percent, compared to 2-20 percent absorption of non-heme iron. Therefore, vegetarians may need to consume twice as much dietary iron as meateaters to absorb an adequate amount of iron each day. There are many good sources of non-heme iron. Dark leafy greens and dried beans are among the best vegetarian sources of iron so your daughter could make up a juice using the non-heme iron sources. Also she should bear in mind that there are several types of foods which can reduce the amount of non-heme iron that the body absorbs. For example, the tannins in coffee and tea, fibre, eggs, and some types of chocolate can inhibit the

absorption of non-heme iron. The good news is that vitamin C helps to markedly increase the absorption of non-heme iron. For instance, drinking a glass of orange juice with her dinner can increase non-heme iron absorption up to six-fold! For this reason I would recommend that she takes a Vitamin C supplement – the best one is the LivOn Laboratories Lypospheric Vitamin C which has the best absorption and doesn’t upset your tummy. She could also take an organic iron supplement, such as Thompsons, but if she does be sure to take it with a food or beverage that is high in vitamin C (such as orange juice!) Floradix Formula, containing iron rich yeast and herbal extracts, is also a very beneficial product for vegetarians. ■ All products mentioned are available from www.healthpost.co.nz ■ If you have a question for Les please email her: herbalist@littleherbalcompany.co.nz

You know drinking plenty of water every day is good for your health. The Institute of Medicine recommends men consume about 13 cups of fluid a day and women take in about 9 cups. Yet remembering to drink water may not always make the top of your daily to-do list. Here are some tips to naturally incorporate drinking liquids into your day to give you the energy you need to accomplish everything on your to-do list: Always have a reusable water bottle with you. Tuck it into your purse or gym bag and have an extra one at your desk. You can find plenty of varieties in the stores, and you might even consider personalizing one so you remember it's yours and there for you. If the container is handy, you'll find yourself drinking out of it more often, just out of habit. Add fun flavours. Add fun flavours to your

water to change it up, or make fun "mocktails" with your friends. Just cut up oranges, lemons, grapes and other berries and immerse them in your water for a fruity drink. Purchase some travel flavor packets to add to your cup. Like tea? It's a great way to flavor your water, and it provides plenty of other benefits, too. Explore. Get out and explore all the watering holes in your community. When on a walk, run or bike ride through your community parks, tuck the tuck a portable water filter into your purse or bag. When you fill up at a water fountain location, you don't have to wait to get fresh, great tasting water. With these tools, you'll discover it's easy to stay hydrated throughout the day. Here's a toast to you for drinking more water, staying hydrated and feeling great. Cheers. _ BPT

Exercise key to health Carrying out exercise during the early teenage years could reduce a child’s risk of developing diabetes later in life, UK health experts say. A study led by the University of Exeter found that physical activity provides the greatest benefits to fighting adolescent insulin resistance, a condition which leads to high blood sugar and is a precursor to type 2 diabetes. But researchers found that while exercise made a difference at age 13, it made no impact on insulin resistance by the age of 16. They said their findings, published in the journal Diabetologia, suggested that early teens should be specifically targeted for reducing diabetes levels. Researchers measured insulin resistance in the same 300 children every year from the age of nine through to 16 by using accelerometers (electronic motion sensors) worn around the child’s waist. The results showed that the condition was 17 per cent lower in the more active adolescents at the age of 13, but this difference diminished

progressively over the next three years and had disappeared completely by age 16, when insulin resistance levels were much lower. Dr Brad Metcalf, of the University of Exeter’s School of Sport and Health Science, said the findings had implications for future interventions in reducing the insulin resistance of children. “Insulin resistance rises dramatically from

age nine to 13 years, then falls to the same extent until age 16,” he said. “Our study found that physical activity reduced this early-teenage peak in insulin resistance, but had no impact at age 16.” A reduction in this peak could lessen the demand on the cells that produce insulin during this critical period, which may preserve them for longer in later life, Dr Metcalf said.

Treat cataracts for clear vision W hen we look at something, light rays travel into our eye through the pupil and are focused through the lens onto the retina, a layer of lightsensitive cells at the back of the eye. The lens inside the eye works much like a camera lens, focusing light onto the retina for clear vision. It also adjusts the eye's focus, letting us see things clearly both up close and far away. The lens is mostly made of water and protein. The protein is arranged in a precise way that keeps the lens clear and lets light pass through it. The lens must be clear in order to focus light properly onto the retina. As we age, some o f the protein in the lens may clump together and start to cloud areas of the lens. This is a cataract, and over time, it may cloud more of the lens, making it harder to see. Figures find approximately 91 per cent of those between the ages of 75 and 85 have some cataract forming in their eye. The lens of a human eye is shaped similar to an M&M’s lolly (not the peanut ones!). It has a front (anterior) part and a back (posterior) part. The central portion of the lens is called the lens nucleus, and the outer portion is called the lens

VISION PROBLEMS

capsule. Between the inner nucleus and the outer capsule is a portion of the lens called the cortex.

TYPES OF CATARACT ■ A subcapsular cataract occurs at the back of the lens. People with diabetes or those taking high doses of steroid medications have a greater risk of developing a subcapsular cataract. ■ A nuclear cataract forms deep in the central zone (nucleus) of

the lens. Nuclear cataracts are usually associated with aging. ■ A cortical cataract is characterized by white, wedgelike opacities that start in the periphery of the lens and work their way to the center in a spoke-like fashion. This type of cataract occurs in the lens cortex, which is the part of the lens that surrounds the central nucleus. The location of the clouding can also be defined as being anterior or posterior, central, or peripheral. Often the clouding of the lens may affect multiple portions of the lens. The most common type of cataract that is related to age is sometimes termed a "senile cataract." This type of cataract primarily involves the nucleus of the lens. Cataracts that develop in the posterior subcapsular area (in the rear region of the lens capsule) are more common in a younger age group.

RISK FACTORS Besides advancing age, cataract risk factors include: ■ Diabetes ■ A family history of cataracts ■ Extensive exposure to sunlight ■ Smoking ■ Obesity ■ High blood pressure ■ Previous eye injury or inflammation (swelling) in the eye ■ Long-term use of steroid medication (especially combined use of oral and inhaled steroids)

If your vision has become blurry, cloudy or dim, or things you see are not as bright or colorful as they used to be, a cataract may have developed in one or both of your eyes. Many people say that their vision with cataracts is similar to the effect of looking through a dirty car windshield. As a cataract begins to develop, you may not initially notice any changes in your vision. Gradually, as cataracts progress, you may begin to find that it interferes with your daily activities and you may experience symptoms such as: ■ Painless cloudy, blurry or dim vision ■ More difficulty seeing at night or in low light ■ Sensitivity to light and glare ■ Seeing halos around lights ■ Faded or yellowed colors ■ The need for brighter light for reading and other activities ■ Frequent changes in eyeglass or contact lens prescription ■ Double vision within one eye Performing a complete eye exam, your ophthalmologist can tell you whether cataract or another problem is the cause of your vision loss. No studies have proved how to prevent cataracts or slow the progression of cataracts. However, doctors think several strategies may be helpful, including: ■ Have regular eye examinations. Eye examinations can help detect cataracts and other eye problems at their earliest stages. Ask your doctor how often you should have an eye examination. ■ Quit smoking. Ask your doctor for suggestions about how to stop smoking. Medications, counseling and

other strategies are available to help you. ■ Reduce alcohol use. Excessive alcohol use can increase the risk of cataracts. ■ Wear sunglasses. Ultraviolet light from the sun may contribute to the development of cataracts. Wear sunglasses that block ultraviolet B (UVB) rays when you're outdoors. ■ Manage other health problems. Follow your treatment plan if you have diabetes or other medical conditions that can increase your risk of cataracts. ■ Maintain a healthy weight. If you currently have a healthy weight, work to maintain it by exercising most days of the week. If you're overweight or obese, work to lose weight slowly by reducing your calorie intake and increasing the amount of exercise you get each day. ■ Choose a healthy diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables. Adding a variety of colourful fruits and vegetables to your diet ensures that you're getting many vitamins and nutrients. Fruits and vegetables have many antioxidants, which help maintain the health of your eyes.

SURGERY There are no medications or eye drops that will make cataracts go away—surgery is the only treatment. A cataract may not need to be removed right away if your lifestyle isn't significantly affected. In some cases, simply changing your eyeglass prescription may help to improve your vision. Once you are diagnosed with a cataract, your ophthalmologist needs to monitor your vision regularly for any changes. When a cataract causes bothersome vision problems that interfere with your daily activities, your ophthalmologist may recommend surgery to remove the cataract. With cataract surgery, your eye's cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens implant (called an intraocular lens or IOL). This is usually done as a day stay procedure. If the eye is healthy, the likelihood is that cataract surgery will restore good vision.

Light up with this holder THE HUMBLE candle holder needs modernisation, so we came up with this less feminine, non-kitsch design. The great thing about Sculpey (oven bake clay), is that you can mix it up to create a faux marbled effect. We also created an on-trend granite effect. Makeover complete.

Modern Candle Holders You will need: 6 x 57g Sculpey Cookie Cutters (various sizes) Rolling pin Glue 1. Soften each block by rolling in your palms. Remember to wash your hands in between colours. 2 Roll into balls, and then roll flat into different thicknesses of at least 1cm. 3 For a marbled effect, mix balls of different colours. The more you mix, the more diluted the effect. For granite, cut small flakes of a contrasting colour and lightly roll in. A really fun step. 4 Measure the diameter of the candle and make some with holes wide enough to fit snugly. 5 Once you have enough rounds, bake in the oven according to directions. 6 Stack the different colours according to taste, and glue together. 7 Insert candle into super original candle holders. TIP: Roll extra thick rounds and cut circles out for napkin rings.

T

ime to look after the most precious people in our lives … our children’s needs and the best options for our little ones to sleep well, get the support they need and wake up refreshed and ready for the day ahead. Sadly so often, kids get the hand-me-down beds, or the old foam swab to sleep on and we think that is all they need, let’s face it, they don’t weigh much when they are young. Oh, how wrong can we be? Firstly a quality inner sprung mattress is the most important item, they need. Our children need a healthy sleeping environment, especially since they spend more time sleeping and napping than the average adult and are in the prime of their growth spurts. They need the best support we can afford. And it’s not only good support they need, but the state of the mattress is as important. Old mattresses tend to harbour all sorts of nasties and this will affect your child particularly if they suffer from asthma or any other allergy. A good New Zealand manufactured single mattress costs $279, comes with a 5 year

warranty which will equate to 15 cents per night for a healthy supported sleep! Most of us resort to a foam swab for our little ones, but again, the support is lacking and the foam tends to be sweaty and damp, which in turn makes the bed feel cold and this will wake you little ones up more often during the night. What size bed, is the next question. Most children only need a standard single bed (91 x 188) or long single (91 x 203), but depending on the size of the room, a king single is great as it allows for those huge growth spurts that children tend to have, (107 x 203). In saying this, I believe that it also depends on how your child uses their room. I know from experience, my daughter liked to play on the carpet of her room, so I kept to a single initially so as to allow for this. There are so many options to choose regarding what you place the mattress on. The standard platform base which matches the mattress is the ideal, as it is sturdy, comes with the same guarantee as the mattress and takes up the least amount of room. But, yes all mattresses can be placed on a slat bed, which includes the headboard

5 Piece Set RRP $2,795 and this allows for greater air circulation and possible storage under the bedframe, but a word of advice — keep it uncluttered as the mattress does have to breathe particularly for those who suffer from allergies. It also allows for regular vacuuming for those who are asthmatic. Sometimes space can be an issue, especially when two children need to share a room and the usual choice are bunks. What child does not dream of a bunk bed? But a word of warning, New Zealand does not have any safety regulations, just a few guidelines, so when looking at this option, be aware that the recommended age for bunks is 9 years old. A couple of things that you need to check for is that the guardrails are stable and connected to the ladder. The ladder needs to be high enough off the ground so that crawling children don’t see this as their next adventure! Also check the height of the mattress going onto the top section as the guardrail must be high enough to stop your child from rolling over the top, the guard rail also needs to be a certain distance above the mattress, plus the gaps must not be more than 9cm as little limbs and heads can get stuck. Look for any possible snags on the unit as this can be extremely dangerous as they might get hooked up. The bunk needs to obviously be sturdy so the whole unit does not topple onto them. Keep the bunks away from windows and allow for a good space in height from light fittings and fans and that there are no cords accessable from the bunk. If you would like a copy of the Australian safety standard, we can email this to you on request. One last point is to make sure there is enough room between the two beds so that when you

kiss your precious children goodnight, you don’t end up decapitating your head We do have on offer backpackers bunks in singles and a single/double combination which can hold an adults weight. The average wooden bunk set is not meant for adults. The other option is a trundler bed that has a king single on the top and a single bed stored below. These are great to use when you have sleep overs, but keep in mind that they are only

SOMETIMES SPACE CAN BE AN ISSUE, ESPECIALLY WHEN TWO CHILDREN NEED TO SHARE A ROOM AND THE USUAL CHOICE ARE BUNKS. great for larger rooms as when they are both open and together they do measure 198cm wide. That’s almost as wide as a Californian king bed. Last but not least, a good waterproof mattress protector is highly recommended to keep the little ones dry and look after this investment. MANGAWHAI HEADS

esigning a beach house that doubles as a permanent home and possibly as a retirement home is quite a challenge, but Barry and Jill James managed it with great flair when they put together their ‘bach with attitude’ at Mangawhai Heads four years ago. Low maintenance, easy care and high quality were all items on the wish list, and the result is a 281 square metre two storeyed, cedar clad building with copper guttering, double glazing, underfloor heating and many other touches of quality and luxury not always found in a bach. With four bedrooms and three bathrooms, the house has worked well both as a permanent residence and as a holiday home, and Jill and Barry have used it both ways. “It’s a great house to live in,” Jill

says. “We did the interior with relaxed living in mind so it has hard floors through all the living areas and fairly minimalist de´cor – I’m not a clutter person.” This is an upside-down house built so the living areas would capture the best sea views, and to that end the open plan kitchen, dining room and living room are all upstairs, opening through several sets of bi-folds to a wrap-around balcony. There’s another large living area downstairs, but Jill likes the upstairs space with its views and sunny outdoor living space. She has used a mainly muted palette throughout the house, but up here the stone coloured, flagstone-sized floor tiles, neutral rug and squashy, charcoal sofa are enlivened by two vibrant Forme chairs in shades of orange, teal and red on an

off-white background, and a dining table with a bright orange/red glass top. Various pieces of artwork, glass and ceramics pick up the orange and red colours, although there are also touches of blue. “I’m really a blue person but I just wanted to do something different up here,” Jill says. The downstairs living room, which opens out to a broad terrace which is a favourite place for barbecues and entertaining, has a more casual feel. The oversized double doors that open into this space are offwhite painted T and G-style, evoking the Kiwi bach aesthetic reinvented in sophisticated, contemporary style. Pale dove-grey sofas, a blue toned rug and teal cushions betray Jill’s liking for blue and contribute to the coastal living theme. “This room and the outdoor space here is a bit more private, and it’s great for entertaining,” Jill says. “We had a combined 60th birthday party, marriage and housewarming here and it was great.” The cohesive de´cor throughout the house is partly the result of Jill’s excellent eye, and because she bought all the furniture and decorative arts specifically for this house. “It sounds like fun but actually I did get a bit overwhelmed by it, so I had to limit myself to doing one room at a time,” she says. ‘But I do love looking around the shops – not always to buy but sometimes just to see what’s out there.” Now that she and Barry are planning to move, she’s considering the design for the next house. “I’d probably prefer one level, but of course this house had to be two storeyed because of the views,” she says. And when you can see the inlet, the sandhills, the beach and beyond, a second level is really no hardship.

FROM THE TOP: A double storey design with living space upstairs was essential to capture the best views; Jill unleashed some vibrant colours in the Forme chairs and the dining table to give the open plan living area an extra sparkle; The big downstairs living area opens onto a broad terrace where most of the outdoor entertaining takes place around the barbecue.

Corokia ‘Frosted Chocolate’. is a mass of yellow flowers and can be kept pruned into a low hedge as small as 40cm. Shades of yellow: Corokia ‘Goldspash’ has yellow variegated leaves and orange berries, it is a nice bright coloured plant that adds some interest and good contrast into the garden. ‘Lauren’

is more subtle with green leaves with some yellow through the centre, small yellow flowers and orange berries. Shades of green: Corokia ‘Geentys green’ is one of the more popular green corokias. It has a nice bright green leaf with a silvery grey back to it and dark stems. ‘Geentys ghost’ has a silvery-olive green, smaller rounder leaf and a dense habit which responds well to trimming. ‘Emerald n Jade’ has small bluegreen leaves and an upright twiggy habit. And our very own Corokia ‘Grey Fox’ this one was selected from the wild by Ian Fox – the owner here at Alter-Natives. ‘Grey Fox’ is a low growing divaricating shrub which as its name implies is a grey colour. It grows to about 60cm tall with a 1m spread. It works really well with smaller growing bright coloured, strappy leaved plants such as Dianella nigra, and mountain flax, and looks good in rock gardens.

shrub up to 4m; Callistemon ‘Rocky rambler’, with a height under 50cm and spread of around 1m, is suitable for low boarders and trailing over banks; Callistemon citrinus ‘Firebrand’, has a citrus scent when leaves are bruised, a low spreading shrub with scarlet red flowers, a height of 80cm and a spread of over 2m; Callistemon viminalis, with viminalis latin for long flexible twigs, this bottle brush is a weeping variety growing to around 10m and is at home along side stream banks where there is a reliable water supply; and Callistemon ‘Little John’ which will provide your garden that contrasting soft grey blue new foliage. A dwarf with a spread and height of 1.5-2m.

The hardy poplar is great for shade, shelter, erosion control, stock food, timber and autumn colour. Poplars are a fast growing, versatile group of large deciduous trees which can grow to over 30m. They have an excellent deep root system and provide multiple uses on the land. Between the different species they will grow in most soil types and conditions except very wet or dry. They are one of the few trees that can have stock around them although grazing animals will need to be kept away for a couple of years until the trees are well established. The leaf of the poplar is highly nutritious and cut branches can be fed to animals in times of drought without damaging the tree. It is well suited for a variety of uses, from furniture to truck decking to veneer manufacture. Poplar may be harvested from 20 years on, depending on the species and growth conditions. There are two main shapes within the poplars, narrow and columnar or wide and spreading. The wider crowned poplars are great for shade and wide shelterbelts where a deciduous tree is necessary. The narrow

American Balsam Poplar forms are better as a specimen tree or for shelterbelts where a lower amount of shade is needed. Poplars have an excellent deep tap root which along with their fast growth rate makes them the ideal choice to stablilse slopes where earthflow, slip and slump erosion is occurring. Their root system is not suited to streambank erosion as that requires a fine mat of surface roots. Depending on the variety, poplar will lose its leaf between May and July with a golden

yellow display of colour. At Alter-Natives we have the following five varieties of poplar available to cover most situations in Northland: Kawa — wide spreading, fast growing, best on more sheltered, moist sites, good for erosion, shelter and timber; Chinese poplar — very hardy, tolerates dry and wind, slightly slower growing; Black balsam — hardy, tolerates dry and wind, large open tree with vigorous root system, excellent for erosion control and shelter; Crowsnest — narrow form, smaller tree good for shelterbelts; Chiba — narrow form, smaller tree good for amenity planting and shelterbelts. One metre tall poplars are $8.50 each or 10 for $75. We also have poplar sleeves for sale at $3 each or 10 for $27. These help protect your plants from possums and stock.

Since 1995 Hendrik Kerstens has been photographing his daughter, Paula, beginning as a series capturing the fleeting time of childhood. A moment of revelation occurred for Kerstens, which would later lead him to develop a series of portraits emulating the style of the Dutch masters: “One day Paula came back from horseback riding. She took off her cap and I was struck by the image of her hair held together by a hair-net. It reminded me of the portraits by the Dutch masters and I portrayed her in that fashion. ‘‘After that I started to do more portraits in which I refer to the paintings of that era. The thing that fascinates me in particular is the way a seventeenth-century painting is seen as a surface which can be read as a description of everyday life as opposed to the paintings of the Italian Renaissance, which usually tell a story. NEED TO KNOW Price: Mazda CX-3 Limited, $38,595

by ROSS KIDDIE

Dimensions: Length,4275mm; width, 1765mm; height, 1550mm

I

got into a conversation recently about the direction Mazda is heading in terms of vehicle design and concept. A colleague and I both agreed that Mazda are trend-setters at the moment, there’s a lot of exciting product heading out of the Japanese factories, and all the vehicles I have driven lately reek of quality and refinement. That, not taking into account the countless awards the company has earned through product satisfaction, nor the variety of product that has just been launched. Following hard on the heels of a new Mazda3 and Mazda2, another newcomer has just landed, and it is a car which captures the modern desire for SUVs; the CX-3 as its nomenclature suggests, is a lightweight, compact SUV which sits in the Mazda range below CX-9 and CX-5. The CX-3 is here in six variants, two and four-wheeldrive and with the choice of petrol or diesel power. As a concept, the CX-3 here in New Zealand has few competitors, most likely Holden’s Trax and Ford’s Ecosport would be its natural rivals, but in saying that the CX3 is different in that it has fourwheel-drive options. Not only should Mazda New Zealand be comfortable with where it is sited in the SUV market, they should be rewarded with healthy sales given that it has spectacular pricing. Starting at $31,195 through to just $42,595 for the top-spec four-wheel-drive diesel, it is a tempting proposition for someone who likes the idea of SUV but doesn’t need big. However, the CX-3 doesn’t feel small and when seated there’s a feeling of spaciousness which is quite uncanny for a car which measures just 4.3m. The test car was the petrolpowered, front-wheel-drive Limited specification model which sits at $38,595. The engine is a 2-litre, four-cylinder unit which gets about its work effortlessly. The CX-3 is light, that being the case, the engine doesn’t need to work hard. It is rated with 109kW and 192Nm, and includes the SkyActive technology which Mazda have

MAZDA CX-3 LIMITED

Dynamic handling and performance

engineered so that fuel use is minimal and emission output is low. Drive is sent traditionally through a six-speed automatic gearbox, and if you take into account how long Mazda has been building conventional drivelines it will be no surprise to hear that the power plant/ gearbox combination excels in

terms of sophistication and operation. Along with an 8.9sec standstill to 100km/h acceleration figure you could expect fuel usage figures of something like 6.1-litre per 100km (46mpg) on a combined cycle average, according to Mazda. My testing time resulted in a 7.6l/100km (37mpg) average

figure helped by an instantaneous 7/100km (40mpg) highway cruise figure with the engine turning over at just 2100rpm at 100km/h. And the CX-3 feels sprightly, it’s only carrying 1259kg so there is a constant feel of liveliness without it being overly spirited. The whole engineering package combines to produce dynamic handling and performance. The CX-3 rides on highish-profile Toyo tyres (215/50 x 18in), they are quiet and behave well under all circumstances. On-road handling is neutral and balanced. The spring and damper rates are only firmed enough so that big jolts from the road surface are absorbed without affecting cabin comfort, that without compromising body balance when quick corners are presented. Steerage is sharp and turn-in is precise, the chassis sends all the right messages to the driver. In terms of in-cabin feel, the

CX-3 provides a relatively spacious environment. There is room for three in the rear without too much of a squeeze widthwise and with plenty of head and leg room that area is perfectly acceptable for journeys of long distance. Rear of that lies a 231-litre load space, expanding to 1141-litres if the rear seats are folded forward. Up front the driver gets an involving driving position, the CX-3 feels informative when driven ,and with an intuitive layout of controls it needs little familiarisation. Many of the control functions are manipulated by a rotary dial mounted between the two front seats, it guides the driver through a host of functions viewable on a large central screen. This technology is part of what makes Mazda2 and Mazda3 so special as mainstream cars, and the CX-3 provides value with its level of fitment for comfort and convenience. Some of the major features include multicoloured leather trim, head-up display, satellite navigation and comprehensive infotainment system. Items for safety are also extensive, the CX-3 has the latest Mazda-inspired i-Activsense a suite of safety features which are both active and passive. And the CX-3 looks neat. Its cheeky styling incorporates the best from Mazda’s newest creations, it will appeal to buyers from all walks of life. Mazda has made a bold statement in the New Zealand market, its product line-up is vast and I applaud the level of quality throughout the entire product range. I can’t wait to find myself behind the wheel of the 1.5-litre diesel, I can only imagine it will be a stunner.

Introducing the first small SUV to bring you stunning KODO design, classleading safety and connectivity that always keeps you in touch with your world. Add to this an unparalleled pairing of SKYACTIV power and fuel efficiency, together with a choice of Front or All-Wheel Drive and 3 years of mazdacare Genuine Scheduled Servicing* at no extra cost; the FirstEver Mazda CX-3 will move you like never before.

Be happy with what you have Wife, mother, journalist ... PHILIPPA MANNAGH reveals the highs and lows, and the challenges in life ...

M

y littlest is nearly eleven months old. Where did the time go right? It only seems like yesterday I was sharing my surprise journey with you, aka “Little Miss Expecting”. The pregnancy seemed to fly by and the newborn weeks disappeared, now I have a busy toddler at my feet as I sit at my desk to write. With three kids and a business, something has to give and at the moment it is my housework expectations. As long as things are clean, I have to train myself to be content and the tidiness will come back again one day, I know this. Seeing delight in these areas that normally cause stress is very important to manage week to week. You can’t be everything to everybody and admittedly, I can’t be an amazing housewife to

my house right now. Life is too short to worry about the windows and cupboards. I have learnt lately, that time is far too precious and these things can be ignored for a time. Instead, I see the handprints. Once upon a time I would have quickly wiped them off the glass before visitors arrived. Now, I have to bring myself to make that surface shine because to do this, I know I need to smear away that little hand print that has grown so much already… from floor level to hip height. The marks do fade. I tried desperately to snuggle my big ones on my knee the other night, a moment of denial at how grown up they now are. When they were young, the stress of having two small children was very real at times and could feel never ending. People much wiser than me said these moments will be gone before I knew it.

I couldn’t believe them when times were tough and sleep was minimal. No time for yourself to pee, no peace and quiet and constant spew or food marks all over your clothes. Sometimes I did cave into thoughts that the next stage would be more awesome. Those wise people (fellow parents who were a few steps ahead) were bang on. As they race down the road to school, try their hardest in sporting events, offer their valid opinions and find their individuality, I guess I am now one of those wise ones saying these same comments to new parents that were once spoken to me. Luckily for me, I have another chance to relish these moments and soak them in, even the hard times. I am grateful for it all, like never before because I am well aware that before I know it … my littlest will also be too big to scoop up onto my knee.

Education key to life DIANNE HARRIS is a budget advisor for the Anglican Care Centre

RECIPE This is one of those go to recipes, a long time favourite, thanks Mum.

Cheese Puffs Education is the most powerful weapon for changing the world. Not necessarily school education, more than that, education in realizing that the influence that we have on our families habits i.e. spending, eating, hygiene etc start from when they are young. Understanding that children take what they are given and ask for what they know they are likely to get e.g. if we teach our children from an early age how to save and to use their money wisely they will understand when mum or dad says “no, not this time”. To see the benefits of looking ahead, which in turn, becomes a practical solution to the problem of how to best spend the money available. Change is one of the hardest things in life to do and when it comes to the way that we spend our money it gets even harder. Education and knowledge is the key to successful money management BUT nothing is going to work unless you actually WANT it to. Sydney Harris said “The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows”

I usually double this recipe 1 c flour 2 tsp Baking powder 1 and a half cups grated cheese salt and pepper to taste chopped bacon (optional) Well grease muffin tins and preheat oven to 200

Break 1 egg into a cup half fill with milk and then half with water Mix all ingredients together LIGHTLY - in other words don’t over mix Put mixture into the well greased muffin tins and spindle a bit of cheese on top. Bake at 200 for 10 to 15 minutes. Leave in tin to cool slightly before getting out.
