Hi from Japan, where I am exploring possibilities and adventure! This country is known for earthquakes, in which there were three last week. Two of them, within 24 hours! I was an earthquake virgin before this, so it was an interesting experience. It was a Monday, the previous weeks were epic and our accommodation was what I would term as totally disordered, but those who know me are aware of my OCD and know the abode is always in order! I was almost done with cleaning the house, and looking forward to showering and heading out to meet a friend for lunch when I heard the alarms and sirens on the street and my cellphone was screaming warnings. Then I realised, the building was shaking and swaying from side to side. It was a rather intense experience and at that point I realised, there was nowhere I could go – from the 16th level. This building might pop ... then, it stopped. On reflection, if anything, I became more grateful for being alive, for the adrenalin spike that reminded me that thrival is greater than survival. It put things into perspective for me, that mostly, it’s the people in my life who are important to me and that the housework can wait! There is also a new sense of a demand of myself to make the most of each day and get moving with my targets to empower more people to create their lives more consciously. If this were your last day, would you look back on your life and be happy with what you have achieved and more importantly, would you be happy with whom you have become? Take on a new challenge, don’t wait for the ‘right’ time – it may never come. Celebrate all you have achieved so far. Spend time with loved ones and, my favourite piece for now, make sure there’s a chilled bottle of bubbles ready to enjoy!

LEIGH BRAMWELL talks to Grant Harris, a local architect who has won international acclaim

ON TOP e h t f o

WORLD Y

ou could be forgiven for thinking that Grant Harris does many things back to front. In a time when technology has changed the way architecture is delivered, Grant is using pen and paper. While other businesspeople are moving from provincial towns to Auckland to expand their businesses, Grant has left

Auckland behind and moved his architectural practice to Whangarei. In the not-too-distant future, the business will open a ‘branch office’ in Auckland to better serve clients there. And in the face of many architects who have developed a signature style, Grant has assiduously guarded against it. All of which have put him, his business partner Ian Butt, and Harris Butt Architecture Ltd in an exciting space. A few weeks back Grant was contacted by London-based design website Design Curial, who wanted information about The Knoll Ridge Cafe´ at Mount Ruapehu. Grant designed the building, which won a

New Zealand Institute of Architects national award in 2012. “I heard nothing more about it until a couple of weeks ago when I had a phone call from the cafe´ owners to say: guess what?” The project had taken the title of Best Designed Cafe in the World, as determined by Design Curial who had considered 4000 cafes from New York to Tokyo for the award. Well-executed symbiosis between a stunning location and architectural design pushed Knoll Ridge ahead of an impressive list of unique buildings, including Italy's feline friendly Romeow Cat Bistrot and Australian cafe Jury, created from a former prison. Others in the top ten included Ukraine's The Cake, Japan's Mirrors in Gifu and Salvaged Ring Cafe´ in Vietnam, created from salvaged timber. Grant was surprised to have won the award, despite the fact that designing a building for such a severe environment provided a set of unique challenges. Limited road access to site and stringent requirements meant extensive planning

and logistics were required just to get materials to site. The entire building, from foundation beams/floor panels to roof sections and windows, was broken down into a modular panelised system, which allowed for delivery, placement and erection by helicopter on site. Some people express surprise that such an impressive and complex building should have had its genesis in Whangarei, but Grant says those kinds of perceptions are, oddly enough, more from people in the area than those outside. He has no such reservations, having moved here eight years ago after growing tired of living in Auckland. “It’s about understanding why my wife and I came here — the space around us, the quality of the natural environment and the freedom to operate in a place that’s not hampered by traffic and poor infrastructure.” Joining forces with Ian Butt, who had lived in Whangarei most of his life, facilitated the design of many remarkable buildings such as the Waitangi Gateway and Amenities Building, the Whangarei Town Basin Hub Development and the

One of the positives Grant sees for Northland is that it had a strong and viable future and both he and Ian are excited about potential projects both within the region and further afield. They want to ensure Whangarei moves in the right direction to create a vibrant and engaging city based on great design. Both will stick to the old school method of using pen and ink to express their ideas. “Clients react to that in a very positive way,” Grant says. “It means you can draw what you’re thinking while you’re talking to them. Of course technology has a vital part to play in the production but initially I find drawing is a far more tactile response to what we do as designers.”

From Whangarei to Oxford t took Ashlee Beazley 36 hours to bring herself to open the email that would tell her whether or not she had been accepted at Oxford University. When she finally did, she was speechless. “It was one of those moments that will stay in my memory forever,” she says. ‘‘I was completely shocked. I hadn’t prepared myself for being accepted, only for not being accepted, and I realised right then that my life plan had drastically changed.” Born and bred in Whangarei, Ashlee agrees that being accepted for Oxford seems improbable, and the way it came about was certainly unusual. She had been studying at Auckland University when she had the opportunity to go on exchange to a university in Glasgow. She and her friend Lucy, who was going to Ireland, did some travel first and one place Ashlee chose to visit was Oxford. “It’s such an old university, and I loved it,” she says. “So I said to Lucy: ‘humour me, I want to go to the admissions office’.” She talked to the staff there, took away the information she needed to make her application, and she and Lucy continued their tour. “We went to Cambridge too, but I didn’t love it as I did Oxford and fortunately the admissions office there had closed five minutes before.” Back home, Ashlee googled everything she could find about Oxford, put together her application and sent it off in January this year. When Ashlee first started university in Auckland when she was 17 it was to study to become a forensic anthropologist. “But half my class had the same idea, and when our lecturer told us there was only one forensic anthropologist working full time in New Zealand, I decided to reconsider my career options!”

She switched to law and ditched psychology in favour of history, which was her favourite subject at school. “I enjoy my law degree but I love history more, and I’d eventually like to teach history, and research and write.” Her course at Oxford runs from October for a year, and she’s still not sure what might happen after that. “I’m not opposed to coming back to New Zealand, but I also love it over there,” she says. “I think I will ultimately end up in New Zealand because we have an unrivalled lifestyle here, and it’s a great place if you have a family.” She also admits to being a small town girl at heart, enjoying the sense of community of small places. “I think after Oxford I’d like to work for a bit,” she says. “I’ve

I HADN’T PREPARED MYSELF FOR BEING ACCEPTED, ONLY FOR NOT BEING ACCEPTED, AND I REALISED RIGHT THEN THAT MY LIFE PLAN HAD DRASTICALLY CHANGED.

been studying for seven years at tertiary level and I think I need to step back. When you’re studying, it’s always around you and you never have a clear head space.” She also has some longer term goals, one of which is to have her PhD and teach at university. Another would be to work in government policy in an effort to help others improve their lives. “I tutor English to high school students and that has given me the idea to set up a pro-bono tutoring programme,” she says. “Good teachers can make such a difference to learning. To learn means to broaden your horizons and see the world outside of your own sphere. And if a teacher can inspire just one child from a low decile school to go on to tertiary education and get a degree, it’s breaking the poverty cycle. If you inspire the value of learning you can show students that knowledge is not just for nerds.”

Uber cool in the chill International and Kiwi designers will keep you on trend this winter, writes RODELLE PAYNE

L

ET’S BE honest: Getting dressed in the dead of winter is no easy feat when the aim is to stay warm and look cool. This season, our favourite brands and designers have made this more than achievable. There are two main factors that I see as the glue for creating the ultimate winter wardrobe. The first is the winter boot— now we all have our favourite pair that we just can’t ever seem to part with, but this season is the time to say goodbye to the old faithful and hello to the new must-haves. This season’s boot crush would have to be Beau Coops and its ever-incredible Jerry Boot. Made from Italian leather, these boots are ideal for winter. With just the right amount of heel, these boots will carry you all day and well into the night. The leather and metallic detailing makes for an easily transitional ankle boot. Matched with skirts, dresses and denim, these boots will keep you warm and stylish all winter long. Whether it is work or play, darling Jerry is here to stay. We also love the Isabel Marant-inspired Jogha Boot. As comfortable as a sneaker, as stylish as a heel and perfect with pants, comfy boyfriend jeans or a dress, this is another winter must. With punched leather, this is my take on the loafer and one I have already been rocking for weeks. The second winter staple is finding the perfect coat to suit you and your lifestyle. With oversized being the trend of the season, our faves Karen Walker

and Juliet Hogan have provided the goods. Whether you want to add hobo-chic to your winter wardrobe or a touch of 70s glam. Karen Walker’s Thistle Coat and oversized wool Tweedia Coat are both must-have investments this season. Juliet Hogan also nailed the ultimate coats this season. Juliette’s wool Melton Cardi Coat is an absolute must-have this winter. This coat is effortlessly chic, and paired with a matching Alfie skirt creates effortless suiting

which can also be worn casually, making this coat a winter favourite to keep you warm and on trend. For those wanting something a little more fitted, the 100 per cent New Zealand Made Wool Cara Coat by Juliette Hogan is a soft, luxurious coat that can be dressed up or down for every occasion. We can’t avoid the winter months so lets embrace the chill with a couple of super-cool styles to see us through the season.

Dress for success, ditch the excess I’m preparing for a big interview, an exciting opportunity — what do I wear? writes Lisa Lyford

I

CAME across a woman the other day shopping for something for a job interview. I gathered from her manner that the interview was very soon. She had set in her mind what she wanted but couldn’t find it (I know that feeling!). Because of her stress, she wasn’t open to trying other styles. The shop assistants were very helpful and gave her lots of options but she quickly dismissed most without even trying them on. I even helped, not that I let it be known I was a stylist, perhaps I should have. She left the store without anything, other than even more stress. Choosing the right outfit is really important, but so is being prepared, well in advance. Whatever you do, don’t leave it to the last minute.

What to wear? You have to be mindful of who you are meeting and what the purpose of the meeting is. You want to create the right impression. You will be sized up within the first few seconds of meeting the interviewer. They say “you can never be over-dressed” but I believe you can, and an interview is one such occasion — don’t overdo it. I recently received a call from a stressed wife telling me her husband decided to go for an internal promotion and had been advised that one of the things holding him back was his attire.

FEEL GREAT: Dress as much for the confidence it gives you as how it impresses others.

He was told that if he wanted to be in management he needed to consider lifting his style; they suggested a suit and tie. I advised against a suit and tie — his industry never wore them — and that he would be far better off with a smart pair of trousers, shirt (no tie) and a blazer (which complements but doesn’t match the trousers) and a smart pair of shoes. ■ Choose something you feel great in, that you enjoy wearing and that you often get complimented on when you’re wearing it. I’m hoping you have something like that. ■ Choose an outfit that is “job appropriate” but dress it up a

notch or two. ■ Be well groomed — clean, with well-manicured fingernails, hair washed and looking fab, ironed clothes, shoes polished. I’m sounding old-fashioned and I know I’m stating the obvious but it’s “all in the detail”. This is what people will notice, always the small things. ■ Never wear jeans to an interview, even if you know employees might on a day-today basis. Never wear Jandals or very casual footwear. Best put — simply don’t wear casual. ■ Never wear anything risque or revealing, for example, something sheer, low-cut or too figure-hugging. If in doubt,

check with a friend or family member.

Further Advice Do your homework well in advance — make sure you know all there is to know about the company through an internet search and/or by talking to others. Understand the full requirements of the job. Be well versed and confident in “selling” yourself. I know this can be hard for some people but if you don’t, someone else will. Be yourself and relax. Oh, and arrive early — it gives you a chance for calm, deep breathing beforehand.

Powder perfect on the big day Every bride wants flawless makeup for her wedding. Annemarie Quill has pointers on how to get it

M

INERAL POWDERS are great choices for wedding day makeup. Here’s our pick of the latest and what we like best. One of the first steps in selecting the perfect powder colour is to determine skin tone and undertone. To start you’ll need to establish your basic skin tone. Nadia Henry, NZ brand manager for Smashbox Cosmetics, says ask yourself, are you fair, moderately fair, medium, medium-deep, deep or very deep? “Next, you’ll need to work out your skin’s undertone. Undertone refers to the colour that is most predominant in your skin after brown and white. The most common undertones are usually yellow, neutral, pinkred, or olive.”

Smashbox Photo Filter Powder Foundation, $62 The eight-hour wear powder

foundation will stay all day and look great in photos. The doublesided sponge lets you apply it sheer or full, and it is non-drying or caking and oilfree.

Smashbox Halo Hydrating Perfecting Powder, $89 We love this. Not only does it make your skin look good but the anti-ageing powder has the science of skin care built in with 48 minerals, 11 amino acids and pure gold.

Makeup Me Cosmetics Mineral Pressed Powder Foundation SPF 15, $65 This silky feeling powder builds from translucency to a full-coverage matte foundation. Air-light and jet-milled, it won’t cake or settle into lines as it helps maintain a luminous complexion throughout the day. Gentle enough for all skin types, even sensitive, rosacea-prone or

postoperative skin, it is a good choice to use after a treatment like microdermabrasion.

Jane Iredale Amazing Base, $78.10 Made from micronised minerals, which have a natural SPF 20, Amazing Base was the first product Jane developed 21 years ago. It still lives up to its name. The loose mineral powder is a concealer, foundation, powder and sunscreen in one. The look is creamy and luminous, the feel is like silk, and it can be used wet or dry.

PRODUCT OF THE MONTH Oil Defense Protection RangeOily/Combination Skin In this type of skin, the oil producing sebaceous glands are overactive and produce more oil than is needed. The oil oozes and gives the skin a greasy unhealthy look. There are several factors that causes overproduction of sebum / oil and if not treated appropriately, overtime will lead to: ■ Over enlarged pores ■ Blemishes/ vascular inflammation ■ Rosacea ■ Pimples, Pustules ■ Comeodones (Blackheads) Whatever Is causing your oily skin there are steps you can take to control it, hence get more glow and less shine. don’t hesitate to make an appointment to came and see us for a complementary skin consult and advise.

Use a powder brush for normal coverage and a sponge for heavier coverage. The 16 shades are divided into cool, warm and neutral tones. Amazing Base has also received the Seal of Recommendation from The Skin Cancer Foundation, the respected standard for ensuring safety and efficacy of ultraviolet (UV) protection products.

Jane Iredale PurePressed Base SPF 20, $95 This pure-pressed base provides a foundation, powder,

concealer and sunscreen all in one and replaces liquid and cream foundations. Formulated to control oil, these mineral bases give unsurpassed coverage and staying power. Plus they work to improve the skin with ingredients such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide that act as anti-inflammatories as well as effective broad spectrum sunscreens, pine bark extract— a potent topical antioxidant, and jojoba ester, which improves skin texture and reduces moisture loss. Jane Iredale PurePressed and Loose Bases are SPF20 and have a Very Water Resistant Rating.

Caci has answer to those pockets of fat C

hillSculpt is Caci’s nonsurgical fat reduction programme that uses cryolipolysis technology to freeze and reduce fat cells. It is ideal for those who have stubborn pockets of body fat that cannot be easily reduced by diet or exercise.

Where can I have ChillSculpt?

ChillSculpt can be used to alleviate unwanted body fat in the following areas: ■ Stomach: lower abdomen ■ Hips: Muffin tops ■ Waist ■ Back: Bra strap area and love handles ■ Thighs ■ Saddle bags

usually require little, if any, recovery time. Most people can return to normal activities and light exercise immediately.

Who can have ChillSculpt?

Are there any side effects, is it safe?

ChillSculpt is not a weight loss treatment, it is designed to help alleviate stubborn unwanted fat deposits. ChillSculpt is recommended for people with a healthy weight range and a healthy BMI. If you are interested in finding out more, book a complimentary consultation with a Caci Treatment Coordinator.

With over 1 million cryolipolysis procedures worldwide, it is proven to be a safe and effective treatment for non-surgical fat reduction. Following the procedure typical side effects include temporary numbness, redness, swelling, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging and pain. Rare side effects may occur. These can be discussed during with the Caci Registered Nurse. Cryolipolysis is FDA cleared for the flank (love handles), abdomen and thigh.

What does the ChillSculpt procedure entail?

Caci’s Registered Nurses and Senior Beauty Therapists have been extensively trained at the Caci Training Academy, they are the only ones who perform the ChillSculpt treatment. Before the ChillSculpt session starts the treatment area is marked out and photos are taken so we can track your results. Then the machine applicators are positioned on the body and a vacuum effect and controlled cooling occurs. The machine may feel uncomfortable at first, with a slight pressure and intense cold. However this subsides within a few minutes and will become more comfortable. During the procedure you can relax. After the ChillSculpt treatment is finished, the hand piece is removed and the area is

How many treatments will I need? massaged.

What does it feel like?

As the cooling and vacuum begins during the first few minutes, you will feel pressure and intense cold. This soon dissipates. You may also experience a small amount of discomfort, deep pulling, and tugging, pinching or altered sensation. Many people read, watch videos, work, or even nap during their treatments.

How long does it take?

Each ChillSculpt session will take about an hour to complete. Following each ChillSculpt session, you’ll be able to return to your normal routine.

What happens after my treatment, is there any down time? ChillSculpt treatments

Most people will need a minimum of four sessions per area. Results will vary, some people may start to see results three weeks after the first treatment, however most people will notice results after a few months and treatments.

What happens to the fat once treated?

Once the treated fat cells have crystallized (frozen), they die and are naturally processed and eliminated through the body’s normal metabolic process.

How long until I see my results?

You may start to see changes as quickly as three weeks after your treatment, however most clients will notice results after two months. Your body will continue to flush out fat cells for up to four to six months after treatment.

How much does it cost?

The cost varies depending on the area of the body being treated. During a free consultation a treatment plan will be developed which will outline the cost. Caci’s interest free payment plans make paying for treatments easy, simply choose whether you want to make regular weekly, fortnightly or monthly payments to suit your lifestyle and budget. Caci also accepts Q Card.

FINDING YOUR BEAUTY

with SARAHLEE COBB

Real body claims wearing thin Advertisers don’t care about you, they just want your money, says JULIET ROWAN The subject of women's bodies, and their size, guarantees headlines, and advertisers know it. Recently American retailer Lane Bryant took aim at Victoria's Secret "Perfect Body" ads by launching an #I'mNoAngel lingerie campaign featuring plus-size models. The Twitter-sphere lit up as Lane Bryant's chief executive declared the campaign was "designed to empower ALL women to love every part of herself [sic]." Dove has also taken aim at the use of thin models in advertising, opting for "ordinary women" in plain white underwear to celebrate what it calls "the perfect REAL body". Many commend Lane Bryant and Dove for offering alternatives to portrayals of thin women, seen as unrealistic and damaging, but there is also a camp who believes celebrating plus-size models promotes unhealthy lifestyles.

"Fat" and "thin" are controversial, loaded labels, but what is perhaps more important to recognise is that, whatever your opinion on such ads, the motivation on both sides is to capture our attention. Advertisers create ads for a particular demographic. They are appealing to a target market. They don't care about women's empowerment. They care about our money. They want us to spend it on their products. Women (and men) come in all different shapes and sizes. What matters most is that we are healthy and helping our bodies function to the best of their ability. When we look at an ad featuring a woman's body, regardless of her size, it's still about image, not about her personality, intellect or soul.

ABOVE & BELOW: Lane Bryant’s ‘I’m No Angel’ campaign featured plus-size models.

Take a moment to listen to yourself W

e like to think we treat ourselves well; we care for, feed, clothe and generally keep ourselves in good working order. But the more women I help transform, uplift and empower through portrait photography, the more I think about how we talk to ourselves. We might give ourselves everything we need to physically thrive but how do we support our psychological self? How do you talk to yourself about your looks, your current abilities or even your future potential? It’s hard to believe you can be your own worst critic, always first to point out any faults, missed opportunities or sub-par performances. But it happens, we often fail to celebrate our successes and focus on the bit that went wrong. Downplaying the positives and blowing the negatives out of proportion. I was talking to close friend

about careers, when she asked how and why I got to now. I listed my education and experience, having tried A, B, C but “sucking”, being “terrible” or “just not good at it”. When she interrupted “stop you just criticized yourself three times in the last minute”. I instantly burst into tears, not because what she said was hurtful but because it was true. Like so many people; I had told myself, and her, I wasn’t good enough for those things. Looking back, the truth is that I wasn’t interested in them. Why do we choose to belittle ourselves rather than be honest? We are not going to hurt the feelings of an inanimate thing like a career, sport or activity by saying it truthfully. Are we concerned that others will see us as big headed if we say no to something? Why do we choose to portray ourselves as insufficient instead?

Maybe you’ve been told “You’re being too hard on yourself”, it might be something you don’t like to hear. But know you are not alone; often what we think is personal drive, others see as self criticism; so maybe there’s truth in that too. That although it can be better next time it was still good enough for here and now. Everything in life is learned, and if you are not good enough at something it is because you haven’t learned enough to be at the level you want to be. Either because it doesn’t interest you, or you are interested but the time spent learning hasn’t happened yet. They say it takes 10,000 hours to master your craft, so don’t tell yourself you can’t do it when you’ve just started. A wise man once said if it is something you can change, change it, if it’s something you can’t, don’t stress, it will only cause you more pain.

Nicola Smith says add to your life, as soon as you subtract, you are putting negative ideas into your life.

Achieve your goals with a sensible shopping list and realistic attitude, says NICOLA SMITH

H

AVE YOU fallen away from your latest goals? Life become too busy to stay fit with no time to look after yourself? The key with anything, if you wish to be successful, is to start small, one habit at a time. It’s through that daily dedication over time that you then see results. This is as true for fitness, nutrition and lifestyle as it is for business. Success equals commitment over time. The key for you is to start. There is no “one size fits all”; we are all different. You need to find what works for you.

Start little and add to your life, don’t subtract. As soon as you subtract, you are putting negative ideas into your life. So, when it comes to food, add new healthy habits to your diet. Ask how you can add more vegetables and real whole food. How you can add more nutrients. As soon as you say you can’t do something, all you will be thinking is “can’t”. Instead of “I can’t have sugar anymore”, say “I will eat more vegetables and add more nutrients to my diet”. Go slowly. If you turn everything upside down and go full tilt into a new routine and new life, you are going to find it incredibly hard to maintain. Instead, take it slowly. Introduce one new habit and let that new habit stick and become routine. Start by moving more. Can you walk 10,000 steps a day? Build a solid foundation of movement and build from that. Shop to make life easy for yourself. When you go to the

supermarket, first buy all the ingredients that nourish your body from the fresh produce sections on the outside edges of the supermarket. Fill your house with foods that support your new goals. Make healthy choices the easiest options in your fridge and pantry. It’s easier to stick to your goals if you don’t bring bad choices home. Ultimately, it’s about knowing the reasons why you are doing something. Then once you begin doing it, patterns become clear. Remember to keep moving forward. We all have bad days — dust off, start afresh and keep moving in the direction of your goals. ■ Nicola Smith is a personal trainer and runs an internetbased online gym. She is passionate about health and nutrition while at the same time helping her members lead a life that inspires them.

■ MACULAR DEGENERATION

Time lost is vision lost, early detection saves sight It’s the leading cause of blindness yet most of us don’t understand what it is or how to prevent it. WHAT IS MACULAR DEGENERATION (MD)?

The macula is the central part of the retina, the light sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. The retina processes all visual images. It is responsible for your ability to read, recognise faces, drive and see colours clearly. You are reading this using your macula. Macular Degeneration (MD) causes progressive loss of central vision but peripheral vision is not affected.

WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF MD?

There are two types of MD, dry and wet. Dry MD is more common than wet and results in a gradual loss of central vision. Dry MD may progress to the wet form over time. Dry MD is generally thought of in 3 stages. The early stage is characterized by the presence of drusen. These are small yellow deposits that build up under the retina, and are easily detectable during an eye examination. Vision is usually unaffected. Intermediate dry MD is characterized by one or more large drusen that commonly result in blurred vision and a need for more light to read. Vision may be mildly distorted and an early central blind spot (scotoma) may develop. Advanced dry MD, or geographic atrophy, occurs when there is significant loss of retinal pigment and results in a larger central scotoma. This makes reading almost

SEMINARS Free seminar in your area: ■ Kerikeri: 10am on Saturday June 27 at Kerikeri RSA, 37 Cobham Road, Kerikeri impossible and requires people to rely on their peripheral vision that remains intact. Wet MD is characterised by a sudden and severe loss of vision caused by abnormal blood vessels growing under the retina. Immediate medical treatment of wet MD is essential if symptoms occur.

STARGARDT DISEASE

While Macular Degeneration is normally associated with ageing eyes, an inherited form known as Stargardt's disease can affect children and young adults. Stargardt disease is a bilateral inherited retinal dystrophy usually affecting the central retina, the macula, resulting in a deterioration of the central vision.

WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS?

MD is thought to be caused by genetic and environmental factors. People over the age of 50 years are at risk. If you smoke or have a family history of MD, your risk of developing the disease is much greater. Key symptoms may include one or more of the following: ■ Difficulty with reading or any other activity that requires fine vision. ■ Distortion, where straight lines appear wavy or bent. ■ Distinguishing faces becomes a problem. ■ Dark patches or empty spaces appear in the centre of your vision. If you experience any of these symptoms contact your eye care specialist immediately.

MACULAR DEGENERATION EYE HEALTH CHECKLIST

■ Have your eyes tested and make sure the macula is checked. ■ Don't smoke. ■ Keep a healthy lifestyle, control your weight and exercise regularly. ■ Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet. Limit your intake of fats, eat fish two or three times a week, eat dark green leafy vegetables and fresh fruit daily and a handful of nuts a week. ■ In consultation with your doctor, consider taking a zinc and antioxidant supplement. ■ Provide adequate protection for your eyes from sunlight exposure, especially when young.

NUTRITION

A range of nutrients are important for good macular health. If your diet is lacking these you should consider taking a supplement: ■ Lutein and zeaxanthin: These are present in high concentrations in a healthy macula. They are found in green

leafy vegetables such as spinach, silverbeet and kale. They are also present in peas, pumpkin, brussel sprouts, broccoli, corn and beans. ■ Omega 3: All fish and shellfish contain omega-3 but higher concentrations are found in oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, anchovies, trout, herring,

sardines and tuna. ■ Other nutrients: Your diet should include other nutrients that support good macular health. These include zinc (oysters, nuts, legumes); vitamin E (nuts, whole grains); vitamin C (citrus, berries, tomatoes; and selenium (nuts — especially Brazil nuts).

B vitamins can help with stress, anxiety Herbalist LES helps address health issues the natural way I have been suffering from mild depression caused by stress for the last 6 months. I have been offered antidepressants by my doctor but I am trying not to take them. I would rather stick to something natural – any suggestions ? I lead a busy life and am finding it so hard to cope at the moment. — Maggie I’m sorry you are struggling and let’s hope we can find something that will help. Stress is a normal physical response to events that make you feel threatened or upset your balance in some way and the stress response is the body’s way of protecting you. When working properly, it helps you stay focused, energetic, and alert. In emergency situations, stress can save your life — giving you extra strength to defend yourself, for example, or spurring you to slam on the brakes to avoid an accident. But beyond a certain point, stress stops being helpful and starts causing damage to your health, your mood, your productivity, your relationships, and your quality of life. Stress itself isn't abnormal or bad but what's important is how you deal with it. If you're having trouble coping, chronic stress can wear you down and overwhelm you and that can lead to depression. But beyond a certain point, stress stops being helpful and starts causing major

damage to your health, your mood, your productivity, your relationships, and your quality of life. Firstly I would suggest that you take some magnesium. Stress can cause a magnesium deficiency, and, in turn, a lack of magnesium tends to magnify the stress reaction, worsening the problem. In studies, adrenaline and cortisol, byproducts of the “fight or flight” reaction associated with stress and anxiety, were associated with decreased magnesium levels. I like Thompson’s Ultra Marine Magnesium 550 which is available at www.healthpost.co.nz 0800 148148. Take one capsule daily with food. A soothing bath is an easy way to increase your intake of magnesium. Add about a cup of Epsom salts to a warm bath and you'll absorb the magnesium through your skin. Also pop in a few drops of lavender essential oil and have a wonderful calming soak before bed — you'll find you sleep better too. Filisa, Sutherlandia frutescens, is a wonderful supplement to help you to deal with stress, anxiety and depression. Traditionally used by the indigenous African tribes-people to ‘put the heart back’ into widows of slain warriors this gentle supplement helps you to cope without side effects or dependency. Available from Hardys in Kerikeri or Greenworld in Kaikohe. Also from www.littleherbalcompany.co.nz Take two capsules twice daily with food. Take a good Vitamin B complex supplement available from all good health stores. So many of the B vitamins have been shown to help with stress, anxiety and depression. ■ If you have a question for Les please email her: herbalist@littleherbalcompany.co.nz

Handbook supports power of the mind Monique Murphy’s compassionate nature is reflected in A Healing Cancer Handbook — a book she was inspired to write during the voluntary work she did using her Emotional Freedom Technique skills with cancer patients to give them a sense of hope and empowerment. “My experience of working with cancer patients is that they’re frightened, bewildered and vulnerable; often feeling helpless and at the mercy of the medical profession to take a traditional chemotherapy route. Added to which, well- meaning friends bamboozle them with information that leaves them even more confused. The handbook is succinct and simple, to give people an insight into the different ways they can create a healing journey that resonates and works for them.” Described as ‘a gem’ by Dr Damian Wojcik, from the Northland Environmental Health Clinic, A Healing Cancer Handbook provides a guide to broaden people’s perspective into how our life experiences and environment affect the health of our body. The book is a great resource to help identify the root cause of chemical imbalances in the body. It enables the reader to identify potential toxic sources from products, the environment and relationships as well as the stressors — giving practical suggestions and alternative avenues to make lifestyle, mental and spiritual changes to create our own wellness.

Monique’s professional qualifications as a Body Stress Release and Emotional Freedom Technique practitioner, combined with her degree in Psychology, ground and entwine the information with her unwavering belief in the power of the mind to influence the body’s health. Thanks to the generosity of People Potential’s funding, Monique is to be able to donate 50 of her books to The 809 Foundation — a charity set up by Anton Kuraia to help fight cancer naturally. Her book forms part of the Hope Packs given to patients to improve the quality of their lives. For more information visit healinginsideout.co.nz and Healinginsideout facebook page.

Vaccinate en masse People: Ask your doctor if you’re up to date on all your vaccines at your annual checkup. Children have a recommended schedule to follow, but adults often overlook important vaccines like the annual flu shot or a tetanus shot. Pets: Vaccines for pets vary by species and sometimes by age. OUR household is busy, but keeping yourself, your children and your pets healthy is a top priority. Fortunately, wellness for people and pets can go hand in hand, allowing your entire family to feel their best and live life to the fullest. “People who take a proactive approach to their physical, mental and social wellness are typically healthier and better prepared if any health issues arise,” says Satesh Bidaisee, associate professor at St George’s University Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine. “Same goes with pets, which is why family wellness should be a holistic effort.” Here are Dr Bidaisee’s top health recommendations.

Exercise together People: People should exercise for at least 150 minutes a week (30 minutes a day, five times a week) if doing moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes a week (25 minutes a day, three days a

of fun for pets. Tip: Why not exercise together? Walk with your pup. Do yoga and your cat won’t be able to resist joining in. You will both benefit by being active.

Annual check-ups People: Annual check-ups for children and adults are important in order to proactively assess any health concerns. Be sure to ask about important tests such as blood sugar, triglycerides, blood pressure, BMI and cholesterol. For women, check if it is time to get a smear or mammogram. Pets: Pets also need to see a veterinarian for a check-up. Things a vet should check include weight, breathing, ears, eyes, dental health, feet, legs, coat and skin. They will ask about behavioral changes, nutrition and exercise, so remember to discuss any concerns. Tip: It’s difficult to remember when to schedule appointments for each family member. Instead of separating them, schedule all appointments at the same time so you don’t forget.

People: Supplements can boost your health, but before starting any new one, ask your doctor about which would be right for you. For example, in addition to a daily vitamin, other supplements to consider include omega-3s, magnesium, calcium and fibre. Pets: Pets may benefit from supplements depending on their age. Younger pets may need vitamins to support growth while older pets may need supplements for joint health, such as glucosamine. Work with your vet to learn what’s best for your pet. Tip: Ask about appropriate dosage so neither you nor your pet take too much of a certain supplement. The right amount will boost health, but too much can cause problems.

Sun protection People: Use SPF 15 or higher every day. Apply 30 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours, as well as after swimming or excessive sweating. Pets: On hot days it’s important to keep all types of pets out of direct sunlight. Make sure plenty of shade is always available. Furthermore, pet sunscreen is a smart option, particularly for pets with short or white hair. Tip: In addition to sun protection, both you and your pet need to stay hydrated. On hot and humid days, make sure you both drink lots of water. — BPT

questions with TRACEY HARVEY from Frazerhurst

Frazerhurst has been in business in Whangarei for how many years? 32 years thanks to our loyal customers.

Where are you located? FH has always been in Lower Dent Street Whangarei and proud to be locally owned.

What makes you stand out in your field? Quality! Product, service, consistency. 100% customer satisfaction guaranteed.

How many people do you employ and what do they do? Our entire team is like a lovely diverse family. We all bring something different in the way we approach our work and this works to complement each other really well. There are our

showroom and design consultants Ray Wedge, Tim Barnaby and Tracey Harvey; Gail Douglas (accounts with that bit extra); and installation and workroom specialists Colin Tomes and David Attwood.

How has the business expanded over the years? Joining the Weathermaster/ Luxaflex family expanded the

options with all the new innovations and support that belonging to a quality product supplier can offer. Becoming an authorised dealer of Amplimesh security and insect screens was the next expansion. Being able to manufacture in our work room on site has been the key to precision quality. Our extensive fabric range of drapery came later, about 18 years ago.

What training is involved with your staff?

Without a doubt it is a happy customer! I also love being able to surround myself with all these beautiful designs and choices and stand by my right to change my mind weekly on which is my favourite.

All our consultants attend training at the Weathermaster head office in Auckland so we are fully versed in all products from the range of interior and exterior window dressings. They also have access to a wide variety of training manuals and supplier information so we are up to date on the merits of each of our suppliers.

advanced to try to beat Northland’s number one window nemesis “mould”.

Tell us three things about your business that would surprise our readers. 1. Our extensive range: Exterior products to protect from the sun, rain, insects and intruders. Interior products for functionality, diversity, aesthetics or just for the fun of it. 2. Our well stocked showroom, with examples of our entire range and a very extensive selection of fabrics from a wide range of suppliers: We can easily source fabric that we may not have in the showroom. Just tell us the supplier if you can and show us the (sneaky) picture you took on your phone and we will do the rest. 3. Almost anything can be automated: Imagine sitting back in your recliner and being able to adjust the angle of the awning so the sun blesses your feet only, or lowering the roman blind to just the right position so the sun is out of your eyes but the room not dark. LEIGH BRAMWELL talks to a couple of motorbike enthusiasts who bought the perfect house ... because of its shed. FROM THE TOP: Anaglypta wallpaper painted a dark charcoal provides a dash of drama in the dining room; The claw footed tub is the focal point of the main bathroom, until you see the beautifully shaped and polished timber vanity. It looks like mahogany but Paul confides that it is macrocarpa; in the ensuite the two worked together to create this unique vanity. Paul shaped and polished the timber and Leigh hand-painted the frieze above the mirror.

L

eigh Donoghue and Paul Ewen’s Kerikeri house was only just completed when they bought it five years ago, and it was the shed that attracted them. The two are keen motorcyclists, Leigh is an avid collector of de´cor items, and Paul crafts beautiful, bespoke timber furniture. The four bay farm shed was a must have and they finished and adapted it for their own needs. Although the house was a secondary consideration, they loved it and Paul’s skills as a painter and woodworker, and Leigh’s as a decorator, quickly transformed it to a place that carried their stamp. “It was the first house we looked at and it was just what we wanted,” Paul says. “I work on lots of brick veneer homes in my business so this was a happy departure. The house is clad in corrugated iron and has a sleek, contemporary look. It’s elevated

and looks out over the one hectare site it occupies, with lovely views all round. “The views to the east and north are great, but west is best,” Leigh says. “Spectacular sunsets, distant, rolling paddocks and the geese squawking and swimming in their large landscaped pond across the river boundary.” The house is well set up for entertaining with an east-facing courtyard on one side. As Leigh describes it: “our sizzling courtyard is perfect for breakfasts at sunrise. You may be sharing it with a wood pigeon enjoying the berries. This is the entrance to our eyecatching, modern kitchen/ dining area.” Paul painted a fair chunk of the interior of the house, and in the dining room Leigh added a charcoal anaglypta feature wall. The main wall of the lounge is also papered in a textured anaglypta in shimmering white. Anaglypta has made a comeback in the interior design business, having been particularly popular in New Zealand in the seventies. But it actually dates back to 1887, when inventor Thomas Palmer developed a process to make an embossed paper and the Anaglypta brand was born. The name ‘Anaglypta’ is taken from the Greek, meaning ‘raised cameo’. Against this backdrop Paul’s passion as a woodworker and furniture maker, is showcased, and his talent is evident in numerous built-in cabinets and bookcases. Leigh has only to describe what she wants and it is provided. Despite the fact that the two have quite different styles (“Leigh’s a steel and glass person and I’m log cabin”, Paul laughs) the result is a happy

marriage of the two. The vanity Paul made for the ensuite is a masterpiece, with sensuous curves, a glass basin, listello tiles and a frieze that Leigh handpainted. This harmony continues outside, where Leigh expresses her creativity as a gardener. She has loved planting and decorating the big eastern courtyard, using essentially succulents and other dry garden plants. “Those big hilly banks at the back of the house knocked me sideways,” she admits. “When we got here there were huge clumps of flax so we got a digger to pull them out.” She applied similarly drastic measures to the carport and storage shed they built at the back of the house. “That’ll look like a prison from the back,” she told Paul. “It has to have a window there and it has to be red.” She found a suitable window and painted it red, leaving the frame in its natural, rustic state. Ironlace pots, also red, were added, and an old wooden chair that didn’t have much aesthetic appeal was renovated. Paul ‘free-formed’ it, adding weathered timber to give it a bespoke look. Much of the bespoke timber work will remain with the house when it is sold. Paul and Leigh have bought a new property in Waipu, the location of which suits them better for Paul’s work and Leigh’s need for easier access to Auckland. But that, they admit, is its only advantage at the moment. “It was everything we didn’t want – no water nearby, flat, no views,” Paul says. “But we can change it,” Leigh adds with enthusiasm. “I’ve got everything already

done in my head.” She admits, though, that she won’t be able to replicate the rural views, or the quail, pheasants, lorikeets, tui, kingfishers, hawks, heron, and wood pigeons who have hung out with them in the peace and privacy of this place for the past five years.

FROM THE TOP: The freestanding kitchen bar/bench was already in the house, and works well with the couple’s other furnishings; the east-facing courtyard, partly covered, is a favourite place to have breakfast and enjoy the early morning sun; the large lounge, which opens to the courtyard, houses Paul’s collection of stringed instruments and some of his bespoke furniture; this is a favourite corner of Leigh’s, thanks partly to the handcrafted bookcase Paul made to her design, and which Leigh whitewashed.

Shelter and Hedging plants by KATHY MORTIMER

Whether you are looking for plants to create a formal hedge half a metre high, a thirty metre tall shelterbelt or anything in-between, at Alter-Natives we have a suitable plant for you. Hedging plants can be used to provide privacy, create formal designs or filter the wind to give yourself and your garden a nicer environment. The plant/s you can use will depend on how high you need the hedge, what soils you are planting into, slope of the land and degree of salt in the prevailing wind. It is also possible to combine other values with your hedge with plants such as feijoa, olive and guava providing fruit. Many plants, while they will grow higher than required are able to be trimmed to keep the hedge at a suitable level. We stock over forty plants suitable for hedging and shelter, and these examples show a range of different sizes. Come and visit us at AlterNatives and our knowledgeable staff will be able to help you select the correct plant for your situation.

A second childhood By Linda Hall

N

smile. Ducks to Water is the fourth and final book in the Bryn and Oscar series. When Bryn discovers ducks without water he goes on a mission to solve the problem. Meanwhile, Oscar finds himself the stand-in mother for some bewildered ducklings. There are diggers and cranes, bright, interesting illustrations and a pop-up surprise at the end. This is sure to be a family favourite. I asked Brett some questions.

This book is a delight — rhymes that practically read themselves, they trip so easily off the tongue. All everyday noises, which will be readily identifiable for small children, such as the description of the sounds of breakfast-time — “Bibble, bibble, bubble hums my egg from the pot And the bread in the toaster goes click, click, pop!”

WHAT IS THE SECRET TO KEEPING LITTLE PEOPLE ENGAGED IN A BOOK FROM START TO FINISH?

Hush A Kiwi Lullaby written by Joy Cowley and illustrated by Andrew Burdan, Scholastic, $27 ...................................

Tell them a story that is a story — rather than just a series of pretty pictures and cute verses.

TELL US HOW AN AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR WORK TOGETHER When writing I have an image in my mind of the picture that goes with the words. I send my suggestions to the illustrator via the editor, who may have some ideas of their own. The illustrator prepares a set of rough drawings, which are discussed before final illustrations are created.

WHAT IS THE HARDEST PART ABOUT GETTING A BOOK PUBLISHED? I understand that less than 1 per cent of all unsolicited manuscripts are published so it was a shock to be accepted at my first attempt and was mind boggling to be asked write a series at the same time.

DO YOU TEST YOUR STORIES ON YOUNG READERS BEFORE PUBLISHING?

IN TODAY’S DIGITAL WORLD WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO PARENTS TO ENCOURAGE THEM TO READ TO CHILDREN? Children love to share a book with mum or dad. That love will be transformed into a love of reading for themselves, hopefully for life. Read to them, read to them, and then read some more.

Reviews: SUSAN EDMUNDS Rustle up a Rhythm written by Rosalind Malam and illustrated by Sarah Nelisiwe Anderson, Scholastic, $19 ...................................

JUST FOR KIDS

Ducks to Water By Brett Avison, Illustrated by Janine Dawson The Five Mile Press, $24.99

WHAT’S IT LIKE WHEN YOU WALK INTO A BOOK SHOP AND SEE YOUR BOOKS ON THE SHELVES?

WHAT IS THE FIRST BOOK YOU REMEMBER READING?

It’s the next best thing to receiving your first author copy in the post. As I didn’t start writing until I was 60, there is still a feeling of disbelief.

The first characters I remember were Noddy and Rupert the Bear. Though I read and enjoyed plenty, at around 11 I discovered Neville Shute and devoured any of his books I could find — fortunately, there were plenty.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? There are a few more in the pipeline, I’m just getting started. Bring on my second childhood!

Joy Cowley needs no introduction to anyone with any interest in children's literature, and she has now turned her hand to re-writing the traditional lullaby, giving it a New Zealand identity. “Hush little baby and go to sleep, Mama's going to give you a woolly sheep.” The first half of the book has the lullaby in English and the second half in Maori. With beautiful illustrations, this would make a fine gift for new parents.

Grasshoppers Dance written by Juliette MacIver and illustrated by Nina Rycroft, Scholastic, $19 ......................................... The rhymes tell the story of the grasshoppers' year, starting with summer, where: “On fun, sunny summer days one

bunny drummer plays through autumn and winter to spring when On sing-for-the-spring days the kingfisher-king plays.” The illustrations of the dancing grasshoppers are lovely, and feature the many musical instruments from the rhymes.

By ROSS KIDDIE

S

ubaru, through its parent company Fuji Heavy Industries, has recently ticked off some significant milestones. Not only has it just built the 15 millionth horizontallyopposed (boxer) engine, the company has just produced its 14 millionth four-wheel-drive system. Both of those engineering elements are fitted to the new Outback which has just landed in New Zealand, and I guess Subaru are saying if it isn’t broken why change it. The Outback has carved out a fierce reputation in the markets where it is sold for its ability on and off-road. It doesn’t look like the traditional SUV but it is a model which has useful off-road potential along with all of the ingredients which make it a popular choice in New Zealand for families who require the versatility of a large wagon section. And, what’s more, the load section doesn’t affect the roominess of the in-cabin environment, the Outback is comfortable and as generous with its interior space as you will find in a car which sits at the cusp of the medium to large car category. Interestingly, the new Outback is priced a little bit less than before and that, according to Subaru, is to align it closer to the outgoing Legacy wagon, when the new Legacy is launched in the next few weeks it will be a sedan only, as Subaru downsize the model line-up in the wake of the ever-increasing trend towards SUV sales. The Outback range starts at $44,990 for a four-cylinder Sport model and ends at $59,990 for a six-cylinder Premium. The test car was listed at $49,990 with a Sport Premium badge and a four-cylinder power unit. For 2015, the Outback receives many of the carry-over features from the previous generation, items such as hill descent control, X-mode for when off-road trails are presented, Eyesight which incorporates a raft of warning systems and overrides cruise control, satellite navigation, electric sunroof, idle stop start and sport drive modes. Of course, there no surprises under the bonnet, the boxer four develops 129kW and 235Nm but

NEED TO KNOW Price: Subaru Outback Sport Premium, $49,990 Dimensions: Length, 4815mm; width, 1840mm; height, 1675mm Configuration: : Four-cylinder longitudinal (boxer), f our-wheel-drive, 2498cc, 129kW, 235Nm, continuously variable automatic Performance: 0-100km/h, 8.9sec. SUBARU OUTBACK SPORT PREMIUM

Beautifully engineered, borders on luxury they are healthy outputs which relate to engine size and if you think about the Outback’s role the power plant is pretty much ideal. Power is directed through a continuously variable transmission which has management protocols that work a little differently to the way other manufacturers structure theirs, it works more like a conventional transmission, you can detect shift points and ratio changes. With 213mm ground clearance and a height of 1675mm the Outback does sit a bit tall, and with the softish suspension there is a bit of body movement when presented with

a quick sealed road corner, but that isn’t a detraction. I’ve written many times before that the Outback is the perfect ski-field access vehicle, and that is a reason why New Zealand has a high ownership of Subaru product, the four-wheeldrive and suspension systems deal easily to those challenges. Yet the Outback does it in a civilised way, there is nothing crude about the product, it is beautifully engineered and looks after its occupants in an environment which borders on the luxury class, especially in the test car’s case which was badged Premium, meaning it has leather trim and other highspec items.

hen I reluctantly power walked along to the Jump Rope For Heart event at the local primary school, what I did not know was how much it would mean to my son. I have always tried to make every school event and be there to cheer them on, whether they noticed I was there or not. Sometimes I wondered whether I was getting to the awful point of embarrassing and a vote against mum coming to school and congratulating them with a cuddle was on it’s way. I made it in time and caught a good 10 minutes of my son skipping his little heart out. I wondered whether he would be enjoying this event or not, as the rope kept getting stuck around his feet and he tried

over and over to gain the coordination. I watched silently for a while observing his determination. Then he saw me. There are moments in your children's lives that you know is a stand-still moment. One for the bank, a beautiful memory that will travel with them through time and be referred back to when they are towering above their mother. This was it. The look in his eyes melted my heart in an instant and I was so glad that baby and I rushed up to encourage Master Six. He then skipped harder and faster, tried to impress me with “super skips” and wanted to hold my gaze right until the end. He noted that he was fit, he was strong and at that point in time, he loved to skip. I often wondered what the kids where taking in from all

Cars can be a drain on finances DIANNE HARRIS is a budget advisor for the Anglican Care Centre

We spend a tremendous amount of time in our cars, commuting to work, taking kids to school, running errands, so a well maintained and safe car is of high priority. The first, and most obvious, cost of owning a car is actually paying for it. Cars do more financial damage to people than almost any other financial decision. Once the paying part is organised (be it paying cash or getting finance) your expenses are just starting. Do you have car insurance? In my mind a very important part of car ownership. Car insurance varies in cover from age of driver, full or third part to the type of car you drive. Petrol, of course, is a a major cost of car ownership. With the price slowly rising we need to make sure the amount we are spending each week fits in to the budget we have. To get a rough guide check out www.fuelly.com or similar websites or use your bank statement, highlight the petrol purchases over the month or start taking note of how much and how often you are putting petrol in your car. Common costs involved in car ownership include: Vehicle registration (was $287.75 but is going down in July) check out www.rightcar.govt.nz; warrant of fitness (on average between $40 - $55); tyres vary depending on the size and quality of your car but upward of $80; vehicle service, repair and maintenance — you should service your car at least once a year (cars are like our bodies, if we don’t take care of them they eventually break down).

Basic car costs (not including insurance and based on $287.75 registration and $40 per week in petrol) works out to around $3457.00 per year. Ever thought about starting a car account? Putting aside at least $20 per week is a way of ensuring that you have money available when needed to care for your car.

RECIPE With winter coming on comfort food starts to shine. This recipe was given to me along with a jar to taste, it's yum.
