others make the world go around in my opinion. We are all unique and bring a number of different values, styles, personalities, strengths and weaknesses to the table. Embedded in our weaknesses is the deep desire to always learn, grow and to parents better and of course shake that naughty guilt that many of us can’t ignore, no matter what we do. A lot of our knowledge is handed down to us from our own mothers and as natural as this jig should seem, we are all juggling the demands within a world that grows and changes from week to week. I turn to my own mum when things get too much, when I feel like I am failing or in the same breath winning. She has the ability to remind me about the reality of life and the normality of what I’m going through. The up’s and down’s of parenthood and the times when you feel like running away… only to turn around and run even faster home. She reminds me to laugh. She reminds me that before I know it, I will find myself surrounded by adult children and I will at times ache for the days when my kids sat around my feet and the heartbreak could be pinpointed back to whose toy was whose. We speak to a few inspiring mums this month, all on their own journeys and each bringing something special to enrich the next generation. On Mothers’ day this year, remember to thank your mum for all that she does. Take her out for a much deserved coffee and share some memories together or make some new ones. Happy Mothers’ day Mummy x

MOTHERS’ DAY
New Mum shares her hopes for her young son Name: Christine Allen Age: 35 Child’s names and age: Jack 11 weeks
What’s the most valuable quality in life that you desire to pass down to your children? The ability to love and be loved. Having the confidence and courage to put yourself out there to make real friends and build solid relationships that’s not easy. Also, humility, gratitude and kindness.
What is one thing you said you would never do pre-children but now, as a mother is a different story? Put any kind of mark on my lovely wooden floors. From the stroller to his bassinet on wheels, my floor tells a tale of a mother with a job to do. I’m not so precious about my house anymore and I accept that a few scratches on the floor is just the beginning with a little boy.
What’s your proudest moment? PHOTO: Tania Whyte
His birth. After a rough third trimester in
PHILIPPA MANNAGH
Northland’s summer humidity, I was induced at 41 and a half weeks, had a 50 hour labour and then a c section. It wasn’t at all what I had expected, in fact, I found it quite traumatic. But seeing how beautiful and healthy he was when he was brought to me made me so proud of the journey that my husband and I, and baby Jack, had come through. He was worth every minute of it and I felt proud of my little family. After six weeks of recovery, the feeling of independence in those first few trips out with him was pretty neat too.
Funniest moment as a parent? Just last week, I fit into my pre-pregnancy, skinny jeans and was feeling fab and looking forward to going into town with my small man. I was sitting beside Jack while giving him some nappy free time in the morning when I felt something warm on my thigh. The little rascal peed on my jeans while I was looking the other way. Then he laughed at me. I couldn’t help but laugh too.
What is your fondest memory as a child? Sitting on my father’s lap watching telly. Or when I was a teenager, being allowed to stay up on Saturday nights until 3am during the summer holidays to people watch as revellers emerged from the nightclub that we lived close to. None of my friends were allowed to do it. I still love people watching but the only person I see at 3am these days is Jack.
How would the perfect Mothers’ Day play out for you this year? I’m just happy with some cuddles from Jack...oh ok, and maybe a sleep in.
From “I’m never getting married and having children” to mum of 3 Name: Lillian Leathem Age: 42 Children/s names and ages: Caitlin (10) Kendra (7) Lincoln (1)
What’s the most valuable quality in life that you desire to pass down to your children? The most important thing I want for my children is for them to be truly happy. I want them to realise their potential and have confidence within themselves to exceed their own expectations and simply be happy.
What is one thing you said you would never do pre-children but now, as a mother is a different story? I was never going to get married or have children - I’m extremely happy I don’t always listen to what i say.

What is your fondest memory as a child?
That’s a difficult question. As a mum there have been so many proud moments whether its been in the school yard or after-school sports activities but my proudest moment is marrying my best friend and together we’ve made three gorgeous children who are our proudest moments.
Holidays with Nana in her caravan at Kawakawa Bay consisting of weetbix topped with rhubarb for breakfast, a long drop and swimming all day long - simple life xxx
MOTHERS’ DAY
What’s your proudest moment?
How would the perfect Mothers’ Day play out for you this year?
Most embarrassing/ funniest moment as a parent?
I have my Mothers’ Day planned after the success of last year’s event. We are taking our family holiday bus to Paihia where we will stay for two nights and we’re all entered into the Sport Northland Run/Walk series, Jennian Homes Mothers’ day walk. After that we’ll take the ferry to Russell for a bite to eat and then head home. The perfect Mothers’ Day weekend in my books.
When I say this out loud I consider it to be a tad embarrassing however you can’t help but laugh. Our three children’s middle names are all based on family members or traditions however, their first names are all from tv shows . Caitlin was a character on the tv series Sunset Beach that I watched when I was at High School. Kendra .... yes she was a member of the Girls from the playboy mansion ... and Lincoln was the prisoner in Prison Break.
I always said when I had kids that they would just fit into my life. Oh how wrong I was….. Name: Di Crawford-Errington Age: 44 Children/s names and ages: Two beautiful girls, Danie (Danielle) 21, Tyler 18
What’s the most valuable quality in life that you desire to pass down to your children? Crickey if I haven’t done it now I’m probably way too late… but… its so hard to pick one. To work hard and look after yourself – nothing in life is free. Live life to the fullest and make the most of every moment. Have honesty and integrity in everything you do.
What is one thing you said you would never do prechildren but now, as a mother is a different story? I always said when I had kids that they would just fit into my life. Oh how wrong I was…..
What’s your proudest moment? Wow there are so many to choose from! I guess starting a business while my children were young, and managing to do not too bad a job with that. Winning an Westpac Excellence in Business award in 2007, that the business is now 13 yrs old and keeping six staff employed. I feel extremely proud of all of that, and to know that we make such a difference in peoples lives. My children have grown up seeing and learning this too, and I hope I have instilled a great work ethic in them.
Most embarrassing/ funniest moment as a parent? Oh I am sure there are plenty…. But one that sticks is having Tyler falling off her little bike one week, splitting her head open and having it glued back together with super glue. The next week she jumped off a bed and broke her leg in two places….
What is your fondest memory as a child? Camping. My dad drove for Sleepyhead and our family holidays consisted of ‘camping’ trips around the north island in the truck, including a double bed, the bunk beds for the PHOTO: Michael Cunnigham boys, my sister and I sleeping on mattress’s above the cab and the kitchen sink. With four kids and the dog, and usually a friend or two tagging along, we were filling our love tanks and always had a fabulous time. Oh what memories. Camping has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember, and something we always did with the girls too. Now that the girls are doing their thing, Paul and I spend a lot of time in our caravan exploring the country.
How would the perfect Mothers’ Day play out for you this year? The perfect day would be that both my babies would be home with me to spend a lovely day in each other’s company. In reality, neither will be home, hopefully Ill get a phone call or message from them, and Ill take my own lovely mum out for lunch or have them around for a roast dinner, and remind her that I really appreciate the wonderful woman she is.

MOTHERS’ DAY
Making Mothers’ Day Ever y mother is different. Some like chocolate and some like cheese; some like hiking up mountains with their loved ones and others would rather spend Mothers’ Day being pampered in a day spa. But what ever your mother is into, Sunday 8th is a day to celebrate the First Lady in your life the way that you know best. The thing about Mothers’ Day is if you really want to thank or honour your mother then you must remember it’s not about you. It’s about her. Grabbing a bunch of flowers and a greeting card at the petrol station on the way home doesn’t quite cut it for the woman who gave you life. Despite the fact that Mothers’ Day has become something of a “Hallmark holiday” there are still a heap of ways to show Mum just how much you appreciate her without succumbing to commercialism. The key is to either give of your energy or your time to make her aware of how much you appreciate the time and energy she has put into raising you. Even though mothers are no longer roped to the kitchen in modern society, it does seem that it’s mums who end up in charge of household duties. Giving Mum a day off from domestics is a fantastic way to show your appreciation. Here are some ideas as to how you can make your mother feel loved.

This is an experience not just a haircut T
ouch, move and inspire are words to live by for Daniel, owner of Dan Blk Creative. The upmarket hair salon owner, Daniel Matene has a clear vision for his studio and the feedback has been 100% positive. “It’s exciting to know that I’m going to be a part of the change that we can feel happening here in Whangarei,” he says. Having opened his doors one month ago, Daniel chose to ditch the old thoughts on advertising and stick to a new concept. Exclusiveness. This is a new concept for Whangarei and there’s nowhere else quite like it. “I believe and know for a fact, that one’s work should speak for its self… so in a way you could say I’m proud of my confidence that my name is good enough to sustain my new adventure.” “I’m offering customers a point of difference, from my quality high end training with technical skill and character that I have devolved of the past 7 years.” Through word of mouth alone, he has been fully booked out and the future looks no different. “It’s been through word of mouth. I didn’t want the foot traffic, I wanted it to stay exclusive and a who you know type service.” From the eye-catching yet simple sign outside his loft style space, to the stairwell and creative decor inside, this is an experience, not only a haircut.

The walls are lined with floating shelves, plants and tasteful simplicity; a space that mirrors the feeling of a swanky New York studio. “Every person absolutely loves the space here, from the dinky photos to decorations and they come away inspired.” Daniel trained in Whangarei from the age of 16 and over the seven years won himself many awards for his expertise. One of these includes winning gold for New Zealand at the Goldwell Colorzoom competitions, being flown to Sydney then Las Vegas to compete. He recalls it was one of the hardest things he has ever had to do. “I’m a big believer in change even though I’m a creature of habit, I love keeping ahead and up-skilling. My team is going to be no different. One of my passions is seeing people succeed and I’m looking forward to developing my brand which includes the talent from this beautiful city I call home.” “I have a full time apprentice Kaya and I’m very excited to see and help her grow in the industry. Great minds think alike, so it’s good to know that we are on the same page.” Daniel is extremely passionate about what he does and the quality he offers his clients. He is also looking forward to the chance to train others in the near future. “I just love coming to work,” he says with infectious enthusiasm.

STYLE TIP:
FASHION
As a brisk coolness fills the air, the slight shows of winter are upon us and I am ready to embrace the change in fashion.
Really whatever category you fall into, if it feels good and you love it, go with it, we are all striving for the same thing, happiness so if it makes you happy, embrace it and feel good knowing you are Truly You.
A
fringed leather handbag, soft leather boots, a pair of coated jeans or better still a pair of deluxe leather pants, throw in a camel coloured, wool coat, and I am happy. I always have admiration for a well-dressed woman, I feel inspired to see someone making the effort to look spectacular. If you look good, you feel good and if you feel good you do good. It is my belief that a woman looking fantastic, feeling fabulous is truly unstoppable. However, what motivates us to dress the way we do? Often our Style Personalities can dictate this. Have you thought about what your style personality may be? Classic: Do you like to dress smart and tailored with a sense of tidiness and coordination? You have a look of elegance. Romantic: You love dressing up and all things pretty, drawn to bows, patterns and frills. Adore luxurious fabrics and have a love for perfumes. Dramatic: Are you willing to make an entrance, draw attention? Do you love one off pieces? Like your clothes to make a bold statement regardless of practicality? Natural: The carefree, where you prefer simple lines and an uncluttered look, comfort is a must and you prefer casual styling to formal business wear.

SCHOOL BALL
Things You Should Consider Before Buying Your Ball Dress
The ball dress should be memorable both for the girl who wears it and for those who see her in it.
T
here is a long and storied history of high school balls. Whether it is a scene from a movie where every character magically knows the same dance moves or a long held childhood fantasy to share the perfect kiss with your dream date, nearly every girl has some idea as to how they want balls to go.
The ball dress should be memorable both for the girl who wears it and for those who see her in it. This is why it is so important to choose the dress carefully. Savvy is asking Gaye and Delwyn who are the ball dress specialists from Wild Poppy on the things that should be taken into account when shopping for the perfect ball dress.
What length should my ball dress be?
How to choose the perfect colour?
The colour of a ball dress is certainly an important feature. Great colours make the wearer stand out from the crowd and are best suited to flatter her. While it may be tempting to only consider fashion trends when selecting a ball dress colour, it is just as important to consider the ball goer’s skin tone. After all, some of the trendiest colours will not necessarily help every girl to look her best.
Matching accessories?
Choosing the accessories that will accompany a ball dress is nearly as important as choosing the dress itself. Wild Poppy is accessory heaven — filled with a wide range of costume jewellery, sterling silver, evening bags and scarves.

Can I harm my natural nails by wearing acrylic nails? Acrylic nails aren't likely to harm your natural nails unless you rip them off. That's why it is important to get them done by a qualified technician who can give you the best care. Always get acrylics soaked off when you want to remove them.
Is there something different I can do with my nails rather than a French manicure?
Can I go to the school ball straight after the eyeworks are done? It is always best to have treatments, such as eyebrow shaping and waxing, done the day before an event, so you can give the

How do spray tans work and can I get one if I have sensitive skin? Can I have colour service if I have sensitive scalp? Try a no-ammonia, precision permanent haircolour that maximises high-definition colour results with minimum stress to the hair's cuticle for outstanding shine.
A spray tan will give you an instant colour and take about eight hours to develop. With some tans you can shower within two hours so you don't need to have that sticky feeling for long. When you finally shower, you will see colour washing off – don't be alarmed, you will have a beautiful tan underneath. Spray tans are good for most sensitive skin types. However, those with ultra-sensitive skin are best to have a patch test done the week before to see if their skin has an allergic reaction to the product.

A new generation of hair damage repair
Menopause and Hair Loss BEAUTY
I
M
enopause is a daunting time in any woman’s life, with a series of physical and hormonal changes taking place. Although not as well-known as other symptoms, hair loss during menopause can affect up to 50% of women. As with most menopause symptoms hair loss is caused by an imbalance in the bodies hormones. During a woman’s childbearing years, her body produces high levels of estrogen, the ‘female hormone’. When the body reaches menopause, the production rate of estrogen is slowed down dramatically. Lower levels of estrogen in the body lead to an imbalance with an increase in the availability of male hormones (Androgens). Androgens are usually bound by Estrogens (female hormones) which prevents them from entering cells in the hair follicle and roots. HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) is one way to offset the side effects of menopause. By raising the Estrogen levels, it can help reduce or prevent hair loss as your testosterone is prevented from entering the hair root cells and converting to DHT (dihydrotestosterone), However, HRT is not suitable for every woman or some women prefer not to use this treatment. Clive Hair Clinics non-drug hair loss treatments can have a dramatic effect in reducing hair loss during menopause and encouraging re-growth. If you are worried about hair loss during menopause or even before then and would like to discuss our non-drug options, book a no-obligation consultation online at www.cliveclinics.co.nz or phone 0800 40 42 47 today.
nspired by the L’Oréal Research team’s understanding of damaged hair, L’Oréal Professionnel has identified three levels of damaged hair. The levels are based on the number of chemical treatments and haircolor services, and use of hairstyling tools. L’Oréal Professionnel has designed three Pro Fiber ranges adapted for each type of damaged hair: Revive, Restore, Recover. These ranges offer a targeted response to each of the damaged hair levels for unmatched results. Level 1: Slightly Damaged Hair The lowest level of hair damage would most likely seem slightly dry with less shine, duller colour and thinner ends. In this case, your hairstylist will recommend the Pro Fiber Revive programme which has a lemony fragrance with honey tones. Level 2: Damaged Hair In this case, the hair’s external layer is most likely scraped off and the internal hair cortex is unprotected and vulnerable to further damage. Damaged hair at this level will have a rough texture, with a dull appearance, an uneven colour and split ends. This level stage would be recommending the Pro Fiber Restore programme which has a spicy, floral fragrance of sandal milk. Level 3:Very Damaged Hair This would be the highest level of hair damage, hair at this level would have a very rough texture, deconstructed with no shine, faded colour and split ends. At this level you would be recommended the Pro Fiber Recover programme to recover the strength and a stronger feel back into your hair which has a black vanilla fragrance. The L’Oreal Professionnel Pro Fiber is a long-lasting, recharging hair care programme that determines your hair’s level of damage and puts you on the best course of action to care for your hair and get it back to looking and feeling healthy. Top reasons why your skin is the best feature to invest in JENNY LLOYDD, CACI WHANGAREI

e understand the importance of being confident in your skin and that sometimes looking after your skin can take time and be costly, however it’s very important to invest in your skin to keep it healthy for many years to come. Our skin is with us for life, and it needs to last the long haul – that’s right, even longer than that expensive handbag… so it’s worth looking after!
Here are our top reasons why it’s worth investing in your skin. Invest in yourself
You only get one skin, so look after it! Unlike shoes or clothes, skin can’t be swapped when it’s starting to look a bit worn out. To keep it looking healthy and youthful, it’s important to use appropriate skin treatments and skin care. Using a mix of treatments can help improve the tone and texture of your skin, so if you have some skin concerns, now is a good time to consider a skin correction programme.
It’s important for your general health Your skin is your body’s largest organ, so just like your body, it needs looking after too. Your epidermis (top layer of skin) is thin, but tough and waterproof, and important for defence against germs and bacteria. So keeping your skin healthy and strong is vital for keeping your body protected.

Regular use of appropriate skin care, particularly sunscreen, will also help protect your skin against environmental damage and ensure your skin looks its best in the future. Guide to Being Photogenic But what to wear? SARAHLEE COBB
To date we’ve spoken about how to remove a double chin, look slimmer and taller as well as what to do with your hands during a photo. So with all that said and done the first question I usually hear is but what should I wear?
T
here are so many choices out there it can be overwhelming to decide what looks best. So today I’m going to cover the basics to ensure you choose wisely if you know your going to be
photographed.
1. Fitted is always more flattering than baggy or flowy outfits.
Because there is no movement in a photo, wearing something baggy/ flowy will look boxy when captured. If you cannot see someone’s silhouette, your brain will imagine that the person spans the width of the clothes.
2. Stick with whole or block colours. A busy pattern or print
can draw attention away from your smile and towards the clothes themselves. This is especially so for really bright or really small designs.
3. Think textures, they’ll make it look luxurious. Lace, large knits,
sequins and tulle are all really pretty fabric textures that photograph well and can make you look fabulous.
4. Make sure it’s clean and wrinkle free. You may think it’s not
noticeable but even the smallest details show up in photographs. And once the pictures taken you can’t iron the creases out.
5. Go on get dresses up. There are so many photos of us in our
casual everyday wear, so if you know you’ll be around someone with a camera, dress up and look the best that you can be!

Name Alysha Mackenzie Business name and when it was established Zest Brokers – Tim and Larn started the business in 2008 but I joined at the start of 2015.
Describe your business. I am a local insurance and mortgage broker. I have focused my business around helping my clients make sure the things that matter to them are protected. I specialise in personal risk insurance (life, trauma, mortgage, health and income insurance to name a few) and have a belief in helping people work out the right package for them not telling them what they need.
What has been your biggest business challenge over the past year, and how are you tackling it? The fact that there doesn’t seem to be enough hours in a day! The juggling act between work and family has been a tricky one to get used to. The main thing behind my drive to become self-employed was to be able to be at school pickups and have flexibility to spend time with my family. I have set out blocks of my day for certain things such as work between 8.30-2pm each day then mummy mode kicks in and its time for school pick ups, hockey, ballet and all those other fun things we squeeze into a day. Once the kids are in bed I then have another block of time to do work if needed.
What do you do in your leisure time? Does running around after kids count as leisure?? Hehe As a family we spend a lot of time out at the beach and on the boat. Jared is fishing and surfing mad and our two girls are following close behind.
What awards or accolades are you most proud of? Becoming a qualified insurance broker, I studied while working full time and running around after two kids. It has also allowed me the flexibility to become self-employed and given me the push I needed

Changing the Paradigm of Fitness I CORINNE AUSTIN

could do half a dozen half marathons and still never make a top 10 finish. No matter how hard I tried. I just don’t have the right genes. I accept that. I accept that I’ll never have the pleasure of glory in any running race, nor the satisfaction of saying ‘I won’. But, what I can do, is gain pleasure from other factors that running brings – the achievement of just doing it, admiring the lush scenery, and experiencing time to myself. We can participate in fitness to compete (as in sport), or we can participate in fitness to enjoy it and to experience the pleasures and benefits that come with simply moving our bodies in the very way they were meant to be moved. It’s this very difference which needs to be addressed on a massive scale. Sport is sport, there is a time and place for that. But fitness, in general, needs to have the competitive, highest-mountain, or fastest-race aspect removed. For us to survive as a physical being in the human race, this is critical. Fitness is often sold to us via the media in a ‘no pain no gain’ or ‘get your bikini body here’ kind of way. That is an entirely superficial way of viewing what fitness or exercise is, or more to the point – what it should be. Exercise is increasingly being stripped of pleasure. Reality shows like ‘The Biggest Loser’ have done us no favours with this. Exercise should not just be about the total number of calories, kilometres or kilograms burned. This outdated and unsuccessful paradigm needs one gigantic overhaul if we are to get anywhere with overcoming lifestyle disease, globesity,
and encouraging more of the population to participate in regular (pleasurable) exercise. We need to encourage the enjoyment and pleasure elements of regular fitness activity. We need to reduce the images of six-packs, planking world records, and the highest box jumps, and instead bring to our attention to images of walking with friends in sunshine, playing a good social game of beach volleyball,

Even if tinnitus isn’t an illness in itself, it can assume the proportions of one and, when excessive, the strain caused by tinnitus may cause sleeping problems, anxiety and depression. There are lots of measures you can take to help yourself: Take 300 mg a day of Coenzyme Q10. This powerful antioxidant is crucial for the circulation to the ears. Time lost is vision lost, early detection saves sight Do you have Macular Degeneration?
Macular Degeneration is an eye disease that can quickly lead to vision loss if left untreated. One in seven New Zealanders over the age of 50 will contract the disease. It is nearly as prevalent as heart disease and half as prevalent as diabetes. A recent Galaxy poll showed that 41% of New Zealanders do not even know what macular degeneration is. Eye specialist and Macular Degeneration NZ’s Chairperson Dr. Dianne Sharp describes such low awareness as “a tragedy”. Early detection saves sight. “Far too many people are going blind because they don’t know that a simple, test can identify early changes and save their sight. People mistakenly think that blindness is an inevitable consequence of getting old but that’s no longer the case – provided that people know the warning signs of macular degeneration and seek treatment early,” she says. Detecting macular degeneration can be as simple as taking the Amsler Grid test regularly. It can be done in the comfort of your home or wherever you see a grid pattern. If the lines in the grid appear distorted or bent, then contact an optometrist without delay. The disease can progress very quickly - within weeks or months for the most severe form - causing rapid vision loss. Although the treatments are not a cure, they stabilise vision and help to prevent further sight loss. Vision loss has a huge effect on day-to-day life. People with macular degeneration cannot recognise faces, can no longer read, drive, or in most cases, work. This is because they lose all of their central vision. Dr Sharp says people imagine that one can somehow “look around the corner” of central vision loss to see what is there but it doesn’t work like that because we cannot read with our side vision Consequently, people with macular degeneration experience significant emotional harm while the country incurs incalculable financial costs.
Visit Macular Degeneration website to find out more www.mdnz.org.nz or call Eye Centre Primecare on 0800 110 030. Other resources can be found on web pages of Retina NZ http://www.retina.org.nz/ and Save Sight Society http://www.savesightsociety.org.nz/

How long have you lived in this home? We moved into the house in March 2015
Who lives here? Viv and Shaun O’shea
Shaun and myself, and our adult son who has recently returned from living in Auckland. He is occupying one of the spare rooms at the mo.
What was it that you fell in love with? The character of the home, the covered in deck at the back of the house which is great for entertaining particularly since we have opened it up to the kitchen.
What state was it in when you purchased it?
The bones of the house were great, it had been pretty well maintained but needed redecoration and modernising.
The leaves are dropping, the sun is lowering and my power bill is rising!
DON’T PANIC!
What are the main differences after renovations?
Opening up the new kitchen to the deck which is a great entertaining area and provides extra living space. We have completely lived out there over the summer. Modernised and tiled the bathroom with a walk in shower area. Plastered and nearly painted every room, new carpet, blinds and light fittings. We have tried really hard to keep some of the great retro features that were already in the house.
What have been some of your biggest obstacles along the way? No real majors, we had a great builder and sub contractors who dealt with any problems really quickly. We had a huge amount of fun and Shaun learnt a truck load being the builders labourer on his days off (he’s a shift worker)
At Frazerhurst Curtains and Blinds we will have you feeling snug and smug this autumn with a wide range of custom made curtains and Weathermaster blinds, to help minimise heat loss. Call into our Lower Dent Street showroom and let us guide you through our insulation options.

What’s your favourite feature of the home now? Definitely the entertainer’s kitchen because I love to cook and entertain and the flow into the deck.
One piece of advice you would give to someone renovating their own villa? Make sure you get a builder who loves to renovate, also makes the world of difference if you get on well and can have a laugh and a beer along the way.
Any other comments? Ask advice from experts who know what they’re talking about sooner rather than later. Find an interior decorator who understands what you are trying to achieve, Paula Saunders from Time for Design helped us out, she’s fantastic.

ure, it’s nice to play around with big, bold colours. From red to blue, you can embrace the entire rainbow in your home, if you wish. However, sometimes it pays to draw back your interior design and embrace some of the hottest cream, beige or grey shades hitting homeowners’ walls. In fact, some of the most popular Resene paint shades are all about calm and calculated neutral hues. Topping the Resene Top 20 list is Resene Tea, with warm Resene Spanish White and classic Resene Half Pearl Lusta also making the list. In fact, all the shades on this list are neutral shades, from green-edged neutrals to yellow-based shades. Even so, there’s still an extensive selection within the range, whether you’re after a cool grey, warm yellow or rich tan. Neutral shades are a winning choice for many reasons. By all means, if you’re a colour

Have you found some playful home decorating ideas, but are wary of whether you can pull them off? When embarking on the decorating journey, the potential for getting it wrong can ring strong in your mind. Often, these nerves are unfounded. Chances are, if you trust your instinct, you’ll likely end up with an end result you’re delighted with. However, painting your living space cobalt blue and realising your patterned furniture doesn’t match or discovering the violet shade you selected isn’t quite right can be cause for a headache. Meanwhile, neutral colours can be far less risky. Whether you’ve got polished wood furniture or kooky fiberglass chairs in bright shades, neutral walls will lead to a more refined look overall. If you’re not ready to take a risk.

, tallboys, Headboards, wardrobes frames bedsides, dressers, bed and many more! 2. They’re a good first choice If you haven’t painted your home before or have moved into a new property, you might be hesitant to give the walls a lick with energetic yellow or fire-truck red paint. These colours certainly have their place, but you would have to be pretty gutsy to use them as a novice. When you’re entering the magical world of DIY for the first time, ease yourself in by picking a shade like Resene Sea Fog or Resene Sisal for a kitchen, living room or bedroom makeover. This way, you can tackle the technical aspects of painting your property. Good preparation is key to getting a great finish. You’ll need to start by washing interior walls, as well as the applicable joinery and ceilings. Dust and dirt on the walls is a big no-no! Filling any nicks or holes in the wall is essential - otherwise any bumps and holes will show up in the final finish. After you’ve picked up the rollers and taken to the walls with your selected neutral shade, you’ll need to apply a finishing coat, whether it’s Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen, Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom or another finishing product. With the right preparation, products and a careful hand, you’ll be ready to go! However, it’s perfectly reasonable that this might all seem a bit overwhelming. Choosing a neutral shade instead of going all-out orange or hot pink can help ensure a stress-free painting process. And sometimes once the walls are all neutral, it’s much easier to see where to add feature walls of colour without being distracted by the old shades.
3. They’re timeless It’s not mere chance that the shades on the Resene Top 20 list are of the same calibre. Cream, beige, tan, grey and cool white are popular for good reason - they’re timeless. From 1950s bungalows to contemporary concrete-clad properties, neutral shades are a popular hit for properties’ interiors. They don’t date, making them a wise choice if you want to sell up in the future or future-proof your home for the decades to come. If you want a living space that’s both timeless and spacious, a neutral shade is a sound option.

fter a dampish summer and strong autumn rain – now is the perfect time to be planting. Ground and air temperatures are still warm and this will allow your plants to establish strong roots systems before
everything slows down over winter – giving them a head start in the spring.
Revegetation planting
Before Planting
Often it can be difficult when contemplating replanting areas that are lacking trees, the area may be steep, hard clay or exposed to wind, perhaps all three, knowing Northland. Or there may be a potential wetland planting, water ponding in winter combined with summer dry spells. This is where our quality hardy, economical, native revegetation plants are the best place to start. Forests naturally establish in stages, firstly hardy revegetation plants such as manuka, kanuka, flax, coprosma and cabbage tree colonise bare ground. As these grow, they provide shade and shelter for smaller tree species such as rewarewa, tanekaha and totora to grow up underneath them. Eventually the taller trees shade out the revegation species, allowing tall forest species like kauri, miro, matai and kahikatea to dominate the mature forest. In nature, this can take hundreds of years to work through but we can speed up the process through planting the correct species early on and providing conditions for their fast growth. Once the initial trees are established they can be left for tree seed to come in naturally or enhanced with further planting. It is essential when establishing your plants to give them the means to grow as quickly as possible -the quicker the plants grow – the faster any competing grasses and plants will be shaded out. With this in

Holden Spark – One for the Millennials
T
he Spark has a new platform, new body and a new 1.4-litre engine, plus updated in-car connectivity. with the introduction of Apple CarPlay/Android Auto on a large touchscreen. Holden used to have the Barina Spark in our market but have decided to revitalise the micro car segment in New Zealand by instead having the standalone Spark and the Barina, which is slighter bigger than the newcomer. The all-new Spark has a sleek exterior appearance thanks to the double front grille, a lower profile due to a long wheelbase, thinner pillars and a reduction in height. The wheels are pushed to the edge of the fenders to give it a longer look. The Spark is 3595mm long, 1595mm wide and 1475mm high with a wheelbase of 2385mm and will compete against the popular Mitsubishi Mirage and Nissan Micra. But those two models attract, let’s be honest, an older buyer, and Holden NZ is targeting the grandkids of those owners with the use of hashtags rather than price tags when it comes to the marketing of the Spark. Like Kia NZ, Holden has pegged the trend of Kiwis under-30 buying new vehicles due to the housing crisis where home ownership is unattainable but a new car is affordable. The Spark starts at $16,490 for the LS manual, $17,990 for the LS CVT automatic and $19,990 for the top-spec LT CVT. I reckon the LT will be the big-seller for the company especially over the entry model LS because how many

Illustrator Jim Field won the Roald Dahl Funny Prize a few years back. Without a doubt, he’s a funny guy, and his illustrations and perspectives will have you lolling about laughing and demanding this be read at every bedtime. Reminiscent of the great Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss) and Giles Andreae (author of Giraffes Can’t Dance), Rachel Bright’s rhyming text is faultless and simply rollicks along. The Seven Kites of Matariki, by Calico McClintock & Dominique Ford, Scholastic $18.95
Young Londoners Becky, Harry and Leon are leaving town in a beat-up Ford Cortina with a suitcase full of cash. They are running from jealous boyfriends, dead-end jobs and disgruntled drug-dealers, away from their less-than lives in southeast London, the place they’ve always called home. Poet and rapper Kate Tempest brought her words and music to The King’s Arms in Auckland and Bodega, Wellington this January past for just 2 solidly stunning performances, that ‘legitimised rap to any hardened cynic, made poetry fans out of philistines’. In this, her first novel, she shows herself to be a storyteller of extraordinary power and humanity. Electrifying and alarming.

I’m known for my addiction to pizza, so for me it’s hard to eat out at Red Dining without ordering one of their adventurous pizza options.
T
onight however, I tried really hard to experience something different on their menu. It was reasonably busy for a Monday night and we were placed at a cosy corner table which was nice to have a bit of privacy as we caught up on the week before. Unwinding over a cool beverage and soft lighting, we ordered the twice baked goat cheese souffle with parmesan cream cheese sauce and slow roasted cherry tomatoes, we’d heard it was hard to beat. I’m a goats cheese virgin, so for me this was a big step at trying something new. Beautiful. As it was served, I noticed how well presented it was and I was intrigued as to how filling it may be. Although light and fluffy it satisfied our appetite until the mains came out and filled a comforting gap on a cool autumn night. The main menu sounded amazing, we went for the herb crusted lamb rump with smashed potatoes, fresh cherry tomato salsa, baba ganoush and a red wine jus. This was the first time I had ordered pasta when dining out, so I chose the lamb and rosemary meatballs served over fresh fettucinni in a smashed olive and pancetta sauce, topped with crumbled feta and a rocket garnish. Always sharing a bit of each others, they were equally amazing and I was extremely happy I had veered off my pizza path this night. The meat was perfectly tender and the flavours screamed to eat more. So much so, that I was too full to finish my meal so I requested a takeaway container but ate it as soon as I returned home. With no room for dessert we ordered the torte de caprice to takeaway and enjoy later with a cup of tea. Rich dark chocolate torte served with black forest cream and espresso ice-cream (although we have to forfeit that part so it didn’t melt on the way home). I adore the atmosphere at Red Dining and I am convinced now that there is something else that can trump a pizza… sometimes.

he stellar line-up for this year’s Bay of Islands Country Rock Festival boasts some of New Zealand and Australia’s top musicians, including Gray Bartlett, Brendan Dugan, Eddie Low and Carter and Carter. The festival is being held on May 13, 14 and 15. Organiser Shirley May says the $60 tickets represent great value, considering there are seven venues to choose between and more than 150 hours of live music. “There five venues on the Paihia side with a free shuttlebus between them and discounted ferry passes to the two venues on the Russell side. “This year, we have a change of venues with the large Waitangi Room at the Copthorne Resort allowing lots of space for seating to see these popular acts. A couple of our previous venues have had a change of ownership, so we’ve made some changes to suit,’’ she says. Venues this year are Scenic Hotel, Tanoa Paihia Hotel, Paihia Sports Bar, Returned Servicemen’s Club and the Copthorne. In Russell the venues are the Duke of Marlborough Hotel and Duke of Marlborough Tavern. “We’re really excited about the lineup, and pleased to welcome back top artist Dennis Marsh who missed last year’s event through illness. Mangonui Festival boosts local economy
STEWART RUSSELL
After months of painstaking planning, the financial success or otherwise of the Mangonui Waterfront Festival was in the hands of the weather gods.
F
ortunately they smiled on us again this year, and the rain radar which we had been watching obsessively for the last week, panned out exactly as anticipated. More than 4,500 people flooded into Waterfront Drive that day, and from the feedback received so far, most had a fantastic day. The key purpose of the event is to celebrate produce, arts and entertainment of the Far North. But it was also about our local economy receiving a welcome lift – even if it was for just one afternoon. With approximately 4,000 adults in attendance, if we say they spent on average $50 each, then the money spent on Waterfront Drive would be $200,000. This is significantly higher than the average autumnal Saturday afternoon spend and a vital boost to help Far North businesses get through the leaner winter months. I understand that most of the local accommodation providers were all busy and some were full, which is great to see the event attracting people from outside the area. This year we conducted a survey at the entry points, which showed that approximately 25% of those attending came from outside the Far North District. One of the key purposes of the event is to attract visitors to our beautiful part of the country, and have them spend some of their hard earned dollars with us. Of course an event like this does not just happen overnight and costs in the region of $35,000 to put on. The main costs included event management, security, facilities, advertising and paying the bands and other entertainers. Despite the previous successes of past Festivals, this year has proved more difficult to attract grants and sponsors. We do not run the event to make a profit, however we do need the event to cover its costs. With the reduction in sponsorship and grants this year, the event will have a deficit in the region of $5,000, this is despite the increase in people and stallholders attending. Although we can cover this deficit in the short term, it does mean we have to attract more sponsors next year to ensure we can continue celebrating the very best of the Far North.
We are grateful to all our sponsors and particularly those that donated cash to help cover the operating costs. These include Pub Charity, Far North Reap, PKF Francis Aickin, Palmer Macauley, Mangonui Waterfront Apartments, GAS Coopers Beach, Reia Taipa Beach Resort, Richard & Mary Catterall, , Professionals Far North, Top Enz Fishing Charters, Coastal Ceremonies, Wayne Brown, Peter & Carol Krogh, and Doubtless Bay Villas. Also a big thanks to the guys at Far North ITM, Mangonui Lions, FNDC, Fulton Hogan, Wiltons Garage, Mangonui Hotel, Petricevich Buses, Archibalds Motors, St Johns, CBEC, Mangonui Rural Delivery & NZ Post, NZME – The Hits, Butler Point Whaling Museum, Taipa Sailing Club, Mangonui School, Taipa Area School and the Doubtless Bay Information Centre Volunteers. Without this community support, the event simply couldn’t happen. The festival shows what we can achieve when we come together as a community and a group of businesses. The committee worked hundreds of hours planning and organising the event particularly in the last few stressful weeks. I personally would like to thank my fellow committee members Rick Palmer, Jeff Parker, Clara Lugnet, Lynette Wilson, Jan Ferguson, Danny Simms and Eddie Aickin. I would also like to thank our event organiser, Jodi Betts of Somersault Event Management, without whom the Festival simply would not happen. We are looking at building the event further and would welcome everyone’s feedback as to how we can take the Festival forward. If you have any suggestions of how the Festival can be improved, would like to be involved, please contact one of the committee members mentioned above, myself or Jodi. Finally a huge thank you to everyone who got involved with the Festival. Whether that was by attending, performing, working, sponsoring, volunteering or generally just enjoying yourselves. It helped to make a special afternoon in Mangonui and one that we (Doubtless Bay Promotions Inc) is proud to be involved in.

ow many of us do this but don’t really understand what we are signing. Not because we don’t want to know but its more about the fact that the writing is soooo small and the pages so many and actually it all becomes too hard. Remember these tips before you sign anything - don’t allow anyone to rush you. - read all the small print. - If there’s anything you don’t understand, take the unsigned contract away and get some independent advice before you sign. - Never sign a contract with blank spaces. If the matter is not applicable you should draw a line through the space and each party should initial the change. - understand exactly what you’re getting for your money, how the charges will be calculated and check that the figures are correct. - By law we must be given a ‘disclosure statement’ detailing all the terms of the credit deal before we sign. Ask for a copy of this statement and read it carefully before agreeing to any deal. If the statement is difficult to understand, we can get help from someone like a budget adviser who can make it clear what we’re committing to. - Take time to decide. While, by law, we have five working days after receiving a disclosure statement to change our mind and withdraw from the hire purchase or finance deal, but if it is a credit contract (hire purchase deal) and you have already taken possession of any goods bought using the credit, you must still buy the goods even if you cancel the credit. Keeping this all in mind we really have no excuse, do we?

ast month, I shared about the reintroduction of Nigel Latta techniques in our household, namely the ‘Ladder of Certain Doom’. Well, the look on their faces that mothers day morning was priceless and I wish I had been ready waiting with my camera. “What is that Mum!?” “Oh that’s the ladder of certain doom,” I calmly replied. Priceless. Anyway, after explaining how it worked and the earlier the bedtime for nonsense behaviour, they also have opportunity to work their way back up by helping around the house. Let’s just say that over the last month I have had a steady hand with the chores and that alone has been a success. The bedtimes, not as productive but you need to stick with things right, to start seeing results? I had a big talk to Miss Nine the other night however and it went along the lines of this: “Mum, that chart is dumb. You need to do something way bigger to make me learn my lesson, not go to bed early.” I sat there in the moment suddenly feeling like I was being a little bit parented. “So, what do you think would work for you?” I asked.
“Like take ALL my stuff away or ban me from friends and technology. When you do, remind me that it was my idea anyway.” Deal! So that was that. The ladder has come down and the grounding stage has started. I have to say that so far it’s very successful and I think that comes down to her thinking it was all her idea (which in this case I can probably give her that) Like I said, parenting isn’t for cowards and every age and stage brings new learnings and flexibility to grow with your children. As much as they push me toward wine drinking and pulling my own hair out, I wouldn’t have it any other way and I do look forward to these more grown up years. It’s so very different from the last five… They are growing up too fast.
