I am writing this on Willow's first birthday. Words are hard to come by for once, as I am overwhelmed by the road we have travelled to see her reach this milestone. Time has flown faster than I could have imagined and it feels as if I have blinked her into this world ... and now she nearly walks. As I read back on my Little Miss Expecting journey nearly two years ago, I realise what a roller coaster life can take one on and that it is true, all things work together for good. When I broke the news to my readers, it went something like this: "It has been quite a journey to be honest and an emotional roller coaster as we re-planned life as we knew it. There have been tears, anger, excitement, guilt, happiness, confusion, panic, you name it. This has been a process and one I would like to write further on as it has opened my eyes to how often people go through the unexpected, whatever their unexpected may be."

Having a third baby was our unexpected. We had a plan. We sold everything baby related, aged five an under. We had closure that there would be two Mannagh children under this roof. I struggled to get my head around this pregnancy and shared it openly as I spoke to many others who were brave enough to share their stories with me also.
Women in Business
"When you have a plan, a vision, closure and that gets turned upside down, not all baby news is peaches and cream and all things magical like the movies or even as other people can portray. That can come and often it does, in time. So many stories have been lovingly shared with me as I made sense of what was happening and I would love to share mine for the reason that all the others helped my situation so much."

One year on, this is what I know to be true. Peaches and cream is exactly what she is. We got through it. It has been hard but also the best thing that could have happened to us. We have had to adjust. This has got easier. She has been a blessing to our family and has arrived offering joy, laughter, peace, teamwork, love, forgiveness, wisdom and calm. I cannot imagine a house with only two children now. We have had to practise our juggling skills. She opens up a world of excitement as I daydream into her future. Three is good. Three is our number.

10 minutes with Brad Walters PhILIPPA MANNAgh Air Brush Artist
Brad Walters is proof that dreams can come true and it's possible to live out a career that you love. Especially, when you hold the natural talent that he does. Humbly chatting on the phone about his passions, I could only envisage this talent to a certain point, until I looked up some of his previous art work. Known by many in Whangarei, Brad spends the rest of his time in the building industry and dreaming of his next step when time is on his side that is- a local art gallery.
1 2
What is airbrush art exactly? Basically the airbrush is just a miniature spray gun and replaces a paint brush. You work mainly on motorbikes and trucks, when did this passion begin? I painted my first motorbike when I was about 17 for a mate and I thought at that time it would be cool to paint all the bikes in Whangarei sounds like a little boys dream.
3
How long does a project take you? It totally depends on how detailed the artwork is and how much time I want to spend on it - sometimes I get carried away with the detail.
4
Tell us a bit about the process: As always, the prep work is really important. Then I need to pick the brains of my client and really draw out their ideas, then I can put a drawing together, but then sometimes it's just a matter of getting
started on the job and the inspiration flows and the job evolves.
5
As a hobby turned business are you always looking for new avenues to showcase your work? I really look forward to the day when I can have a gallery at home.
6
You mentioned canvas artwork in the future? Tell us more about that: It's a matter of time I need to find the time to develop my own ideas and passions and get them down on canvas. Once I've found that time I'll open my gallery.
7
Do you have a favourite piece that stands out above all the rest? Not one piece in particular. It's the pieces that are very personal and mean a lot to them which gives me the most satisfaction.
8
What gets you up in the morning? Apart from having to make my boys' lunches - it's making the most of every minute of the day and being creative - whatever that may be.
9
Any further comments, upcoming work? I'll be helping Glenbervie School students paint a mural at the school which I love to do - involving the kids in the project. Other than that, I've got lots of ideas and there's plenty of work in the pipeline. Bring it on.

Country Trenz Moves Onwardz and Upwardz C ountry Trenz gift and clothing shop has been Sue Stevens’ focus for over twenty years. She especially values the possum and merino knitwear range that she’s developed to be unrivalled across Northland. The quality and durability of the blended yarn has won over many customers through the years, with men’s clothing being the successful gift on many occasions. “People tell me stories about it,” laughs Sue. “One lady admitted she struggles to wash the jersey she bought for her husband - because he never takes it off!” With a growing fan club, space had always been an issue when deciding which items to stock. So when the opportunity came to move
to bigger and better premises, Sue jumped at the chance of more space and a wider range of products. When her son Lee offered to build a brand new web shop for her, the decision to expand made even more sense. With the new premises, and a website, comes a new name - trenzonline - reflecting the broader audience that Sue is now meeting. New Zealanders are spending more time and money online than ever before. Even for local people the opportunity to browse now, buy later, is convenient. Trenzonline’s website will showcase products that are actually in stock in the shop so people can be confident of receiving goods in a timely manner. Many of Sue’s clientele are repeat customers, buying gifts to send to friends and family overseas and the
new store is well stocked in time for Christmas post deadlines. There are New Zealand made possum, merino and sheepskin products plus locally made glassware; NZ greenstone and paua jewellery; and skin care products. Kiwiana features too, on T-shirts, children’s wear and a wide range of gift ideas. The spacious new store has the authentic look and feel of a woolshed, with an honest Kiwi welcome from Sue and her team. They’re open from 9 until 5 every day, and 10 - 4 on Sundays, so drop in when you’re next in the Okara area. Parking is easy, right out front and there’s no time limit on that, nor for browsing the store!

The Fashion Fiesta by ChERYL POLwART AT POLwARTh DESIgN
L
abels are like fashion houses these days … here today and gone tomorrow. Therefore it takes polished operators, dedicated to selecting the right supply and demand from talented, visionary designers; who understand fashion as a saleable commodity, to keep the fashion train rolling. It’s a tough time out there in fashion; labels are as good as the season they represent. Get it wrong and you’re gone. When the retailer does find a label that ticks all the boxes they are ecstatic! Sabatiniust rolls with the punches: yet another funky top flips out each season in fabrics to die for and what
about the drop crutch pants? Pure comfort with all the folds - I just love mine. Then there’s the peep shoulder cross front dresses that just work! Price is not even a question with Sabatini and today that’s a big deal. Another ‘thumbs up’ label Joseph Ribkoff just sells itself. Canadian - he’s our Mother of the Bride, cocktail, Christmas party, special birthday party, graduation; cruise wear designer ... the list goes on... specialist. In the fickle fashion world that we live in today this label absolutely works. With over 50 years in the rag trade Joseph Ribkoff continues to design understated sexy for mothers ... not daughters! He uses fabrics
that are firmer, textured, rouched and stretchy that enhances the body shape. His strategic use of black panelling to create the illusion of slimmer sillouettes has been ruthlessly snapped up by other designers. Joseph Ribkoff is worn by celebs around the world, check out Miss America – and of course our local Northland standouts! Vassalli, the jegging company from Christchurch, is another label with their finger on the pulse. We’ve run this label for ten years and over that time the number of jeggings sold must have run into the thousands. It’s the leisurewear women’s dream – pull up, elastic waist, 95% cotton separates in edgy colours and patterns, that are not a million dollars and worn out by fans for years. So why are these labels still here today, when others of equal or better calibre have fallen by the way side? Is it their resilience, adaptability, or individuality? Well they must be doing something right - because you buy them. RIP : Jean Jones, Lisa Law, Women, Barbara Lee, Miss Deb, Blanche Maude, Louche, Resort to mention a few who have fallen by the way…

Wearable wellness arrives in NZ J
EWELLERY THAT looks good and is good for you? Yes, please. Invented by an engineer in the United States in 2010, each Shuzi piece is embedded with a chip programmed with Nano Vibrational Technology, which generates a subtle energy frequency to promote wellness. The Shuzi range encompasses everything from elegant jewellery to durable sports bands and the company says its products are used by customers looking for a natural pain relief for ailments and for improved energy, balance, strength and flexibility. The products were brought to New Zealand by former professional motorcycle racer Gary Goodfellow
who, over a 20-year career, was ranked 5 and 8 in the world in Motocross and Superbike racing, respectively. A very accomplished rider, Gary was the first New Zealander to win a World Superbike race and was the first person to win a World Superbike race for Suzuki. Gary’s career involved numerous crashes and he broke his feet five times, now has a replaced hip, rods in his arms and pins in his knees. For a number of years he had difficulty walking due to these multiple injuries. Gary was introduced to Shuzi bracelets in Canada and it had such a profound difference on his life that he wanted to share it with fellow Kiwis.
The Shuzi range includes delicate jewellery and a Swarovski collection as well as masculine pieces. PhOTOS/SUPPLIED

The perfect time for a shoe checkup We asked Podiatrist Rikki Ringrose for some tips buying sports shoes.
1
What key things should people look for in choosing a sports shoe to work out in? Comfort and fit are a big factor in picking the right shoe, as well as some cushioning with varied levels of support dependant on your biomechanics and injury history. If in doubt, it can pay to get a quick checkup with an experienced professional.
2
If a person is mainly doing classes, what is a good allround shoe? A good cross trainer would usually be sufficient. Some classes can have some fairly heavy loading through the lower limb and a good shoe should have the required cushioning and support to combat this. Keeping it fairly lightweight is usually important, too, as you don’t want to be clunking around the class or tripping over yourself.
3
And if doing a lot of running? One big factor is the surface you are running on, whether this be
on treadmill, road, trail or grass—this will influence what type of outer sole you’ll need on your shoe. The key here is there is never one shoe that will suit everyone. Again, comfort, fit and your biomechanics dictate which shoe will suit you along with your level of activity. When running, the forces going through the foot are increased hugely and therefore the importance of the shoe technology increases. The weight of the shoe is also a factor as even a small increase in weight can really add up to using a lot more energy, while having good flex around your toes is key to efficient propulsion. If in doubt, it’s always good to get yourself assessed by someone with experience in running footwear. Trying on several different shoes with your required support levels and going with the most comfortable is usually a safe bet.
4
What if you’re lifting weights? Something comfortable with a fair amount of cushioning to cope with the increased
load and ground reaction forces from the firm gym floor. In general, the shoe does not need as much support or forefoot flex as a running shoe while movements should be well controlled, creating less likelihood for lower limb stress and injury.
5
How does wearing the right shoe protect you from injury? It can reduce problematic levels of tissue stress by decreasing the load on different structures in the lower limb through cushioning and support which can reduce the likelihood for injury.
6
What are the most common injuries/ complaints if you don’t wear the right shoes? Numbness in toes is quite common if the shoe is incorrectly fitted. The most common complaints I see from poor selection in shoes is heel pain, arch pain, shin pain, Achilles pain and knee pain.

Top brands seek accreditation W
HO SAYS fashion can’t have a conscience? In a groundbreaking move, two Kiwi businesswomen have created a Child Labour Free (CLF) trademark that is being picked up by many leading national and international fashion giants. Michelle Pratt and business partner Nikki Prendergast, as owners of childcare centres in Tauranga and nationwide, protect and try to enhance the lives of children every day. Upon discovering there was no child-free labour accreditation available globally, these women took on the monumental task of creating a process where you can, as a brand, gain a product with the Child Labour Free CLF trademark. Launched earlier this year, Pratt is CEO of the movement. The response to the move so far has been overwhelming and phenomenal, says Pratt. Local shoe brand Chaos and Harmony has joined, director Beks Anderson saying its core values are fundamental to its business. “It is part of our core values to not only work ethically from a humanitarian point of view, but also to get the best last/shoe structures and create the best shoes possible. Child Labour Free means we are working with people that value what they do without sacrificing people who can’t speak for themselves.” Cool kids on the block Stolen Girlfriends Club have also joined the journey. Dan Gosling and Marc Moore want SGC to be accredited because they want to make sure they are doing the right things everywhere they can. Marc says: “I want to know our factories are legit. I couldn’t sleep at night if it was otherwise. This initiative is creating awareness

because too many times the consumer knows little about the manufacturing process and just worries about the end cost. But how about this idea. Paying a bit more for a product that you know has being ethically made. We would all sleep a lot better know that.” Other top New Zealand designers to work towards accreditation include
Kate Sylvester, Twenty-Seven Names and Ruby. International shoe giant Toms has already gained accreditation, with many others soon to be revealed. Pratt says the response is the start to creating a world where consumers and companies can work together making a difference to the lives of children and community they live in.

ne of the first steps in selecting the perfect powder colour is to determine skin tone and undertone. Mineral powders are great choices for wedding day makeup. Here’s our pick of the latest and what we like best. One of the first steps in selecting the perfect powder colour is to determine skin tone and undertone. To start you’ll need to establish your basic skin tone. Nadia Henry, New Zealand brand manager for Smashbox Cosmetics, says ask yourself: are you fair, moderately fair, medium, mediumdeep, deep or very deep? “Next, you’ll need to work out your skin’s undertone. Undertone refers to the colour that is most predominant in your skin after brown and white. The most common undertones are usually yellow, neutral, pink-red, or olive.”

Foremost for Marilyn are the relationships she forms with her clients. ‘We have ladies that have been coming to us for 30 years, 20 years and 10 years - we are so lucky!’ Enthuses Marilyn. ‘It’s rewarding, and a true privilege to care for these women, and have them leave our salon feeling great.’ Then there is the pleasure of working with the team. ‘Our receptionist Judy has been with us over 20years. She has been a big part of it for me. Our stylists are the key to our business. We have regular training, and support our team wherever we can. They travel to industry events, competitions, hair expos and the like to keep up with the latest techniques and styles. Schwarzkopf has been the company we have dealt with for 30 years. Their innovation with new products and colour is inspiring. Their regular training with our team has earnt our loyalty and their quality products which we love.’ Marilyn’s energy and passion is clearly at the heart of the Strand Salon. Acknowledging her team though is where she puts her focus, and Wayne - her husband of 40+ years - has supported and helped all the way.

Combat wrinkles at any age! When is the best age to stop wrinkles, and start Botox®?
T
here’s no right or wrong time to have Botox®, and it’s actually more common than you might think. Many of us have considered it, but have put it off because of the stigma, lack of information, or are concerned about when to have it. So, we’re breaking it all down, and giving you all the info on exactly when’s a good time to consider having cosmetic injections, and if they are right for you.
In your 20’s
Although lines and wrinkles are not usually a concern when you’re in your twenties, Botox® can be used as a preventative measure to help slow the signs of ageing. As we all know, it’s easier to prevent wrinkles, than try and correct them later! “Treating areas before lines and wrinkles develop, relaxes the active muscles before allowing possible wrinkles to form” explains Michaela Shaw, Caci Training Academy. Fair and sun sensitive skin types are often likely candidates for Botox®, they’re more prone to sun damage and environmental ageing which causes premature wrinkles. Also, if you’re an overly expressive speaker, Botox® will help minimise movement in these highly active areas, to prevent fine lines developing.
In your 30’s
During our 30’s, collagen and new skin cell production slows, skin becomes thinner and signs of ageing start to appear. Forehead wrinkles, crows’ feet and frown lines are often more pronounced because of constant movement of the skin. If you’ve noticed your makeup creasing and sitting in the fine frown lines, then Botox® might be right, it will help smooth out the area and reduce the fine lines that have developed, while also preventing them from getting worse.
In your 40’s
In our 40’s loss of volume and firmness can occur; this is when Botox® and fillers can help rejuvenate the skin, by adding volume, reducing lines, and correcting the signs of aging. Botox® can help soften, but may not completely eliminate them, this is when filler can assist, by adding volume under the skin to smooth out the canvas and give more youthful appearance. Crow’s feet are one of the most commonly treated areas, reducing the lines around the eyes can make you look more refreshed, more youthful, and also make your eyes appear larger.
Visit Caci.co.nz to learn more about Botox® and the results it can achieve. To have any specific Botox® questions addressed in absolute confidence, or for more information on the cost of Botox® treatments, have a free consultation at your Caci Whangarei. Book now 0800 458 458 or visit 110 Bank St, Whangarei. Botox® is a Prescription Medicine containing 50,100 or 200 units of clostridium botulinum Type A toxin complex for injection. It is used for the treatment of frown lines, crows feet and horizontal forehead lines. It should be administered only by trained medical professionals. Cautions: people with defective neuro-muscular
transmission disorders, presence of infection at site of injection, glaucoma, pregnancy and lactation. Possible side effects include headaches, pain, burning or redness at injection site, local muscle weakness including drooping eye lids, lack of feeling & nausea. Talk to your specialist about the benefits/risks of this procedure or if you have concerns or side effects. Note: Botox® treatment lasts about four months and after this time further courses of treatment may be necessary. Speak to your specialist about your own situation”. A charge applies. The next best thing? Philippa Mannagh booked herself in for a float recently to see what all the fuss was about, the rest is history... now she is a raving fan. She chats to Floatzone owner Dionne Stroebel about floating, family balance, business and new puppies.
1
How did you come across the Float pod idea?
Charles (my husband) had heard about floating in pods by Joe Rogan, MMA commentator, Fear Factor host and comedian. For a while it was just a thought at the back of his mind, something to try ‘one day’. One day came when he broke his foot. So we arranged a trip to Auckland to try floating there. We both loved it and realized that we wanted to introduce it to the Northland public.
2
What is a frequently asked question when someone shows interest in a float?
What if I feel claustrophobic? – The pod is very spacious with plenty of room to move about. You are in control of the pod lighting – if you don’t want to float in the dark you can choose from a rainbow of colours. I like the yellow one – it makes me feel as if I’m enjoying a warm sunset on an exotic beach! To get the best results you would float in the dark with the lid closed, but you are most welcome to leave the lid fully open or propped slightly open with a towel. Not a question, more of a statement – ‘I can’t float, it won’t work for me!’ – the water in the pod contains over 400kg of natural Epsom salt, making it denser than the Dead Sea. You definitely will float!
3
What are the benefits of floating?
When you enjoy that hour of ‘me time’ as you float, some of the benefits you may experience include total relaxation, stress and anxiety relief, improved creativity and problem solving. We’ve had feedback that bodily aches and niggles have been eased, and sports players and gym goers have noticed enhanced recovery and sports performance.
Some people enjoy the benefits for days after their float, and feedback so far suggests that everyone who has floated here has, at the very least, enjoyed a great sleep that night.
4
How do you feel after you experience a float?
Personally, I feel very relaxed and as if I’m going through the rest of the day in pleasant slow motion. It’s like I’m drifting along wrapped up in a cosy soft blanket, but my thoughts are sharp and enhanced. The annoying little things like traffic jams and moaning kids don’t seem to bother me as much, but my senses seem to be stimulated – colours look brighter, my food is tastier and I’ve noticed that I slow down when I eat - I take the time to appreciate the textures and flavours, and, weirdly, I make better choices about what I want to eat.
5
How does this new business venture fit in with home/ family life, being based from home?
It’s mostly been great. The kids love that we have our own business and like to come up with ideas to help us. Though I must say, we haven’t used any of them yet! Maintaining the pod is quite timeconsuming, and I am busier with it in the evenings than I thought I would be. Getting people to know that our business exists, with a minimal advertising budget, means I’m a bit busier with emails and social media than I would like to be. But hopefully soon I’ll be able to spend more time away from the computer and with my kids. This is the first school holiday that I’ve worked as my own boss. I do feel I’ve overdone the work and not spent enough quality time with the kids. Next time I must remember to carve out blocks of time to do fun things with them.
6
What are your top tips for getting the working balance right?
The one I need to work on most is not to run whenever the i-pad ‘bings’. Yes I need to answer all phone calls, but computer things can wait until after I’ve read a story with the boys or helped them with their homework. I don’t like it when my kids ask to play computer games all the time, so I should really set a better example and put the i-pad down. Getting a puppy definitely helped the work/family life balance! We’ve not had a dog before and we got Baxter at the same time we started the business. Big learning curve. Keeping him tired out so he behaves is a top priority, which is great because it gets us all out of the house for some exercise and vitamin D. A bonus side effect – the kids have learned, through the natural consequences of the puppy eating

7
What was your line of work before Foatzone?
This is easier to answer – I was a Teacher Aide at the school my boys go to. I absolutely loved it, and if I have some free time again, I would love to go back and help out at the school.
8
Do you find floating helps with family life, stress, creating a clear head space?
Definitely! I’m sure my boys would agree- I’m certainly a less shouty growly mum after I’ve had a float. The more I float the more I find that, while I’m in the pod, I can sort through any problems that are niggling at me, which does give me a clearer head space for the rest of the day. I have to float
while the kids are at school though – it’s not relaxing lying in the pod wondering what naughtiness they could be getting up to in the house while mum isn’t around to notice!
9
What do you personally enjoy the most about floating?
The blocking out of the noise, that constant daily chatter. It’s like a little ritual – once I’ve put the ear plugs in, I can feel myself exhale deeply and start to relax. My body knows what lovely nothingness is about to follow. I’m getting better at reaching a Theta brainwave state when I float (like that feeling you have just before you fall asleep or wake up) and I look forward to seeing what vivid thoughts and ideas I’ll have during this time. I’ve recently put some paper and a pen beside the pod so I can write down my ‘genius’ ideas as soon as I come out. The paper is still blank, but watch this space!

Intraocular Lens Implants O nce the natural lens in the eye has been removed, the eye loses its ability to focus light and images clearly on to the retina, the light-sensitive tissue that lines the inside surface of the eye. Before the development of artificial lenses, hard contact lenses or very thick eyeglasses were the only options for correcting vision after cataract surgery. Artificial intraocular (within the eye) lenses were developed in the early part of the 20th century, and Dr. Harold Ridley implanted the first artificial lens in 1949 in London. He noticed that Perspex was inert in the eye, after seeing RAF (Royal air Force) pilots of World War II with pieces of shattered canopies in their eyes (this acrylic resin is known by several trade names including Lucite and Plexiglas). Since that 1970’s cataract surgery tecniques, and artificial lenses have continued to evolve and develop. In most cases, the natural lens is removed and the artificial lens is implanted during the same surgery. The artificial lens is usually placed within the lens capsule, which is the small “sac” or membrane that once enclosed the natural lens and held it in place. Artificial lenses are made of inert (or non-reactive) materials, such as PMMA, silicone, and acrylic. Just like natural lenses, artificial lenses have refractive power, or the ability to bend light, which helps to focus light rays and images on the retina. Because of this refractive power, it is now possible to correct nearsightedness and farsightedness with artificial lenses. The axial length and the corneal curvature are essential measurements to predict the correct lens power of an intraocular lens. This measurement is called a biometry. Today, patients who chose to have their cataract surgery undertaken in private or patients who opt for clear lens extraction wishing to be independent of glasses may have options when it comes to lens choices. A consultation with
an Ophthalmologist will guide the patient on advice as to what choices are suitable concerning their particular vision and lifestyle. In the past, there were only Monofocal IOL’s (intra ocular lens), which allowed for vision at only one distance. Usually the lens was aimed for clear distance vision. This meant that patients would need glasses after cataract surgery to be able to see at all distances. A premium lens is now an option for cataract patients and has continually improved with new generations of lenses entering the market. In the coming years, there is expected to be continuing releases of new lenses allowing cataract surgeons and their patients many options
Monofocal Lenses
Monofocal lenses are the type most commonly implanted. Since “mono” means “one,” monofocal lenses provide one type of focused, or clear, vision. They provide clear vision either at distance or near, but not both. Most patients who select monofocal lenses choose to have good distance vision and use reading glasses to help with near visual tasks, such as reading, computer work, or sewing. Some patients, however, may choose to have better near vision and use eyeglasses that will help correct distance vision. Monofocal lenses are typically what is used when having cataracts done by the District health Boards, and are covered by insurance and usually require no additional out-ofpocket payment.
Astigmatic Lenses
Astigmatic lenses (or toric lenses) are monofocal lenses that can correct astigmatism. Because astigmatic lenses can correct astigmatism, they may reduce the need for an astigmatism correction in the patient’s eyeglasses after surgery. Astigmatic lenses are not fully covered by insurance, and usually require a patient contribution.
Monovision
It is possible, however, to implant a monofocal lens in one eye for distance vision and a monofocal lens in the other eye for reading vision. This technique is called monovision and can provide clear vision at both distance and near after cataract surgery. Monovision works very well for some patients, while other patients do not tolerate it well. If a patient has used monovision contact lenses in the past, with one eye corrected for distance and the other for near, the same type of monovision can be created with cataract surgery.
Multifocal Lenses
“Multi” means “more than one,” multifocal lenses provide more than one type of focused, or clear, vision. They attempt to provide clear vision both at distance and near simultaneously. Because multifocal lenses correct both distance and reading vision, they can reduce the patient’s dependence on eyeglasses and contact lenses. Multifocal lenses are not fully covered by insurance, and usually require a patient contribution. Multifocal lenses can present problems, however. The American Academy of Ophthalmology notes that “...pilots, night drivers, or those who spend a lot of time in front of the computer may not be good candidates for multifocal lenses. Patients who are intolerant of a small amount of glare and/or halos around lights, especially at night, may not be good candidates for these types of lenses.” Also, patients who have significant astigmatism or macular disease should not have multifocal lenses.
Is a multifocal lens similar to the natural lens of the eye? No. The natural lens of a young person changes shape to produce a change in focus. As a person ages, the natural lens becomes more rigid and functions more like a monofocal lens. Lens implants do not change shape. A multifocal lens
compensates for the eyes inability to change shape by allowing the eye to see at distance and near simultaneously through the same optic One of the most important factors when choosing a lens for a cataract or refractive patient is the Ophthalmologist’s understanding and management of patient expectations. Premium IOL’s are not covered by insurance, which means that cataract patients who choose a premium lens will need to pay the additional cost of the premium lens as well as the additional cost of the surgical center and surgeon’s fee. Lens price can vary from $300-$1200.00 a lens. You’re Ophthalmologist will discuss the full price of your specific lens at the time of consultation as well as their fee for implanting the specific lens. Sometimes these lenses are even intentionally different in each eye to allow for specific types of intermediate vision. This is where a good understanding of the patient’s desired outcome becomes critical.
Only if the surgeon understands the patient’s goals will they be able to choose the best premium lens or premium lens combination. How do I know if I am a candidate? Unfortunately, not everyone is a candidate for these new premium lenses. By answering these questions with a YES or a NO answer, you will have some indication of whether you might be a candidate for premium lenses. I have not had cataract surgery in either of my eyes I do not have wet or severe macular degeneration I do not have glaucoma, or if I do, it is controlled through successful treatment. I have not had a life-long complaint about severe glare intolerance. I don’t have an occupation or hobby that often requires me to drive at night I’m not hypercritical about my vision. I don’t like wearing glasses all the time. If you have said YES to all of the boxes above, then you may be a candidate.

women in business
Born into a love of property ERIkA bLANk What first drew you to the Real Estate Industry? I have been interested in the property market for a long time, having been involved in many property decisions with my family. Seeing how investing wisely in real estate can give people financial freedom and enable them to build a great lifestyle made me want to be part of this journey and help people achieve their property goals. Why did you become a Real Estate Agent? My dad is a licensed real estate agent here in Whangarei. He has achieved such great results for his vendors along with being someone people really can trust. Working side by side with him in his business made me realise just how much I could contribute to the real estate industry in Whangarei. I’m passionate about helping people and about getting them the best results so Real Estate really is the perfect fit. What is the most challenging thing about your work? Real estate is such a vibrant and quickly changing market, it is difficult to see people making unwise property decisions because they are reluctant to seek out the advice and help of a professional. Property has become a national pastime for Kiwis but it still remains most New Zealander’s biggest asset and it is important to make sure you make the right decision and get the biggest return on investment that you can. What is a usual day for you at your business? One of the things I love about Real Estate is how varied my day is. On a typical day I spend time organizing advertising, making sure we have great scripts and premium photography for the properties we market. I make sure the properties are given exposure via social media, print, internet, flyers and contact with my databases. I also spend time showing people through our properties, negotiating contracts and advising people who are looking at putting their property on the market. Real Estate is a people business and being a very social person I really enjoy spending time meeting and talking with people.
Where did you study and what degrees do you hold? I studied at Otago University and completed a Bcom majoring in marketing. At the end of my degree I was offered entrance into the honours programme but felt that it was time to spread my wings so my husband and I worked overseas for a few years before returning to Whangarei. More recently I have worked at ASB Bank as a personal banker, helping people achieve their property goals in different ways. It has proved invaluable as I am able to help my clients with questions they may have about the financial side of selling and purchasing property. What goals have you set for yourself? I am really passionate about bringing my unique skills in marketing and selling together to help people realise their goals with property. My aim is for each and every one of my clients to be an advocate for my business because they not only trust me but they have seen the value that I brought to the process and the results that I have achieved for them. What do you think is important for people to consider when choosing a real estate agent? First and foremost it is imperative to choose someone you trust and is honest with you, not someone who just tells you what you want to hear. It is a partnership, the Agent works for you and it is important that you get the best advice. In this day and age getting the best price for your property isn’t a matter of just throwing your house on trade me and crossing your fingers. You need an agent that understands how to target different segments of the market in the most efficient and cost effective manner possible to make sure you reach all the possible buyers for your property and who will strategically manage the selling process to create competition amongst those buyers.

Hospitality
Gearing up for the busy season
W
ith the Northland summer fast approaching, employers in the hospitality industry will be gearing up for their busy season. It’s likely that most will be looking for more staff, both in the kitchen and front of house. It’s also likely that a good number of new employees entering the workplace will have learned their craft at NorthTec. Hospitality graduates from NorthTec have always been sought after for their skills, delivered by highly-qualified staff and honed at NorthTec’s purpose-built facilities. Now, the qualifications offered have been adjusted to better reflect the current needs of the industry, with standardised content and a focus on innovation and creativity. In addition to being taught the essential skills, techniques, theory and food safety regulations, NorthTec hospitality students get a great taste of real life by cooking and serving at the Apprentice restaurant and café, both found on the Raumanga campus. There’s a fully-outfitted barista training room, and the chance to gain experience by catering at major events and fundraisers, working alongside renowned professional chefs.
NorthTec students have a healthy traditional of scooping medals and prizes at regional and national competitions, pitting themselves against trainees and students from all over New Zealand. In 2016, NorthTec is offering a range of hospitality programmes suitable for complete beginners to advanced level caterers. The Certificate in Foundation Studies, specialising in hospitality, is a level 2 programme designed to introduce students to the subject while also helping with literacy and numeracy. It’s fees-free and helps students develop basic skills both in the kitchen and in front of customers. Students learn about baking and coffee making, as well as group catering and demonstrating great customer service. The New Zealand Certificate in Cookery is a level 3 programme and the perfect introduction to professional catering, preparing students to work as a junior chef in a commercial kitchen. For those wanting a broader overview of the industry, the New Zealand Certificate in Food and Beverage Service provides the knowledge and skills to serve in cafes, bars and clubs, as well as restaurants offering table service. Another level 3 programme, it combines barista skills
with professional food preparation and customer service. This certificate is also offered as a level 4 programme in semester two, with an emphasis on staff supervision preparing students for managerial positions. From 2016, again starting in the second semester, the New Zealand Certificate in Cookery can be studied at level 4. It follows on from the level 3 certificate, to turn out chefs with intermediate skills who can produce complex dishes in a commercial kitchen. Graduates from this programme learn to prepare, cook and present cold larder dishes, hot kitchen dishes, patisserie and deserts. For students aiming for the top, there’s the New Zealand Diploma in Cookery (Advanced). A level 5 programme, as its name suggests, it will prepare students for work as a senior chef. Graduates are able to produce advanced dishes, and also earn how to develop and design dishes and menus. So next time you’re out and about in Northland, enjoying the opportunity to dine out in one of the region’s many cafes, bars and restaurants, spare a thought for the staff preparing or serving your food. If
you’re lucky, they might be a NorthTec graduate, keen to put their skills and knowledge into action by sharing some good old Northland hospitality with you! For more information about NorthTec hospitality training, visit www.northtec.ac.nz or call 0800 162 100. Specific trend - pastels
S
oft pastel colours have been swirling around our homes for a few years now, interpreted as icy, gelato tones - think icecream and lolly colours. But this season pastels are growing up. They’ve moved from those watery looks to a more muddied dusky style. It’s a more grown-up, sophisticated palette. And we’re using a variety of them in one room, not just a touch here and there. The trick to using more than one pastel is to use colours with the same saturation or tint levels. So either all dusky pastels together like this dining room, or all light and bright pastels together. With this new approach to pastel schemes, soft neutrals have a strong role to play, sitting happily alongside colours we would more traditionally classify as pastel. Keep these new pastels from looking too gluggy by teaming them with crisp white trims like Resene Alabaster. Or include a sharp-coloured accent like copper or the Resene Hot Toddy coat rack in this dining room. You’ll find plenty of these fashion pastels in the
Resene colour collections. Go ahead, experiment and have some fun.

10 Easy steps to get your home ready for summer!
I
magine this….it’s a balmy summers evening, the windows and doors are open wide and the curtains are softly billowing in the breeze. There’s a fresh smell of sweet flowers in the air and the BBQ is starting to give off a mouth-watering smell….but wait……you notice the windows are still pollen-laden and the mould on the window sills isn’t a pretty sight. There are piles of winter bedding to deal with, the fireplace is filled with ash and the hearth covered in woodchips! ARGHHHH! Now’s the perfect time to freshen up your house for summer so you can enjoy the summer days, guilt-free and chore-free with these 10 easy steps!
1
GOODBYE WINTER! Simple seasonal interior updates mean retiring the dark winter colours and pulling out fresh, light coloured bedlinen, cushions and accessories – fresh white is always a winner, or go for on-trend tropical green, hot pink, coral and yellow! Give turquoise a go for a summery pop of colour. Put away the heaters, thick blankets and the firewood. Replace the candles with fresh garden flowers and herbs. Put your pillows and duvet inners on the line on a sunny day to kill off the bugs and air them out. Now’s also the perfect time to swap over
the duvet inner to a summer weight one, and add a colourful throw blanket at the end of the bed for cooler nights.
2
LET THERE BE LIGHT. Wash those windows (inside and out) and let the light in! Open them up and enjoy the fresh spring air! Give your curtains a vacuum or wipe with a damp cloth to collect the winter dust.
3
BRING THE OUTSIDE IN. Fresh, green indoor plants, will make your home feel alive and provides a good source of fresh air as a bonus! Indoor plants help connect the inside with the outside, and are a great way to disguise and soften an unused fireplace. Give these a try: Kentia Palm, Peace Lily, Snake Plant, Dracaena, Aloe Vera or a Bamboo Plant.
4
FILTER FRESH. Now’s the right time to replace or clean your heatpump and HRV filters and also your drinking water filters. You’ll feel better for it!
5
EASY BATHROOM UPDATE. Invest in a few new towels (bath towels, hand towels and foot towels). It’s amazing how a simple and inexpensive update can invigorate you, and the upside is you can update your bathroom by choosing a new accent colour!
“Before you start your new home, come and see ours”
6
GET YOUR PAINTING PANTS ON! Give your front door a fresh coat of paint in a welcoming colour, stain the deck or give one of the bedrooms a summery new colour – go on….I dare you!
7 8
MAKE A STATEMENT: Invest in a fun, welcoming door mat to greet your guests.
GET MORE LIVING SPACE: Connect your indoors with your outdoor deck or patio with easy additions such as extra seating, citronella candles, lanterns, potted plants and bright, funky outdoor cushions.
9
SPRUCE UP your outdoor area by giving your patio/deck and outdoor furniture a good scrub with soapy water. If the furniture is looking a bit tired, add a few fresh outdoor cushions. Affordable ones can be found at The Warehouse, Kmart & Briscoes.
10
MUSCLE UP! Dust off the cover and give the BBQ a deep clean and get ready for the onslaught of steaks and sausages!

Enjoy the many benefits of this new technology by CORgI SMIT, fROM bEDSRUS whANgAREI
D
o you like to read, or sometimes watch TV or a movie in bed or suffer from reflux or just need to elevate those tired, swollen feet? Or maybe you’re one of those people, like myself who enjoys the odd breakfast in bed on the weekends, while catching up with the local news? If the answer is yes, to any of the above, then the new innovative adjustable bed base is what you’re needing and as the younger set call them, the “hospital bed” for the old and weary! No it’s much more than that, and why do we have this
misconception that we need to wait for those more mature years to enjoy this option? Why? This is no longer the case… we too want to enjoy the many benefits of this new technology and the wonderful thing is, we can now choose so many more different mattresses to go on these bases, yes even pocket spring and other inner sprung mattresses, for those who don’t like the feeling of a Memory Foam, Fusion Gel or Latex mattress. We at BedsRus now offer over 20 different support systems and a varied choice of comfort layers to suit

your needs. Plus they are available in long single, king single, queen and super king sizes. With the added benefit of the super king size being split into two singles, side by side, so when you want to read, watch TV or elevate those legs, you can, without disturbing your partner. As I mentioned, the benefits are endless, like, raising your upper body by 45-60 degrees takes pressure off your chest and promotes easier breathing which will prepare your body for rest and sleep plus reduces heartburn caused by acid reflux. Or when you have a cold, as most of us had this winter, you can sleep with your head elevated to help with breathing and by adjusting the position of your head, your airways will be more open which will reduce snoring! When you have your legs raised, your heart rate will be lowered and prepares your body for rest and it also reduces the swelling in your feet and legs caused by poor circulation. When you slightly raise both your head and your feet, like in a hammock, it allows your muscles to relax, alleviating pressure on you back which will lower the impact on your muscles and you will wake up more refreshed and in less pain. Amazing! Our Adjustable bases, from BedsRus are available in two models. One is the standard 200i which does all the above and then there is
the 500i which has added features like a wireless remote, zero gravity programming, USB charger plus a full body massage feature! Who wouldn’t want one of these? And yes, when the bed adjusts, it has a wall hugging feature which means as the bed is tilted, the base moves backwards to ensure that your side table is in the correct position. Might I add, that these bases are also reasonably priced and will be set up for you when delivered. This new innovation is definitely on my wish list! For further information or a brochure, please just pop in and we will happily give you one. While in the store, hopefully you'll have a try. PS Just a little reminder that the holidays are coming at a great speed and for those thinking about a new bed or guest beds, please don’t leave it till the last minute, this is the silly season, so get planning!. Remember advice is always free at BedsRus, so if you have a question or a concern, please do not hesitate to call us on 09 438 3550, 7 days a week. I also recommend you look at the bedsrus.co.nz website and we promise to do our best in matching you and your family to your and their perfect sleep… Till next time. Corgi Smit

t was a shagged-out rental, originally bought off the plan to use for exactly that, and it had been rented hard,” says Vanessa Owen, cheerfully describing the property she and husband Richard recently bought in Kerikeri. But the tall, slim townhouse overlooking Kerikeri’s golf course had the X factor despite its level of exhaustion, and Vanessa could see beneath the tatty surface to good bones and heaps of potential. She’s a designer from wayback, having put together numerous houses in her distinctive coastal style, and she knew this house could become a cool, urban getaway close to the centre of town. The usual advice to anyone renovating a house for re-sale is to keep it bland and neutral, but that’s not Vanessa’s style. “You only need one person to love it. And in this low end of the market where, for example, young people are buying a first home or whatever, their parents are often involved in helping them get into it. And they want somewhere that they can see themselves coming for Sunday lunch round the dining table.” With this house she could visualise immediately what it would become. “It had these soaring ceilings in marmalade coloured knotty pine – I could see myself up a ladder whitewashing for the next month.”
She wanted a Scandinavian look and used two of her favourite Karen Walker colours – Coastal Blue and Triple Sea Fog - as the canvas. “Two colours only because it’s a small house, and the Karen Walker branded paints because it raises the expectation. No feature walls because they don’t work in small houses, so I avoid hard lines and try to merge the spaces together.” Vanessa loves the challenge of working to a small budget and she’s learned a lot of tricks over the years. “One is that you can do a relaxed, casual, beachy look on a budget. Take the floors. In houses like these they’re usually marmalade-coloured chipboard or hardboard and I’ve developed a system using car paint primer which gives me a blank canvas to do whatever I like on the floor. In this house I’ve done wide, whitewashed planks in the kitchen and dining areas. It takes a while – three or four days - but you get a really great look for $300 plus labour as opposed to $6000 to lay new carpet and vinyl. “And to do a kitchen, you don’t have to replace all the cupboards. A good trick is to refurbish the fronts of the lower cupboards and and take the doors off the top ones and make open shelves. White subway tiles for splashbacks, and also for bathrooms. You can do a whole bathroom for $300 so it’s cheap and easy and I doubt they’ll ever go out of style.” Vanessa was virtually finished the transformation when Charlie and
Trudie Smith came to look at the project. They were after something for under $300,000 that they they could let out as a boutique holiday rental. “Vanessa had just about finished it when we came and looked and we really liked it,”Charlie says. “The proportions were good, it had charm, we liked the two levels and the layout was good.” Trudie loved the quiet location right on the river reserve, the fact that it was an easy walk to the village, and had lovely views of the golf course and a nearby stand of gum trees. This summer they’ll be letting it out to visitors to the Bay of Islands who want stylish, ‘urban bach’ accommodation. And by that time, Vanessa will be on to her next project, in the same street. She has developed a fondness for Amokura Drive because of its underrated location right beside the golf course, the river, and the reserve. “When we bought this place it was the cheapest house on the cheapest street,” she says. “But I really enjoy being the person who can turn things around on a shoestring. Whether I’m working for myself or a client, I seem to be the one they call on when they’ve got absolutely no bloody money.” To book the bach email trudiesmith@xtra.co.nz or phone 021 130 5207.

Locating the lounge up a level from the kitchen and dining area contributes to the sense of space.
An upcycled old dining table and modern chairs fit perfectly in the dining area with its faux planked floor.
Vanessa’s bi-colour palette and pale ceilings are the perfect backdrop for Charlie and Trudie’s casual, coastal-style furnishings.
Light and spacious, the simple bach kitchen is ideal for a holiday let.
The view across the reserve towards the golf course is a real bonus who would think it is a suburban street so close to town?

Mono goes ethnic B lack and white has been a classic interior colour combo for ... well, forever. Stylist Gem Adams takes this ultra versatile monochromatic palette and gives it a twist for today. It brings in an eclectic mix of ethnic touches, some touch-me texture and teams the black and white with soft warm browns for a look that's a little bit masculine and hugely appealing. There's an underlying ethnic theme- the African-style print, the
potted palm, the fish-pot pendant light, the eastern-style stool and the Moroccan table. Together, they make this room look like it's been plucked out of colonial times when good Victorian men did the Grand Tour and came back bearing collectibles from distant shores. Gem started her paint choices with a wall in Resene Baltic Sea. She chose to use Resene Space Cote Flat (rather than Low Sheen) to give this dark delicious colour a velvety look.
You could use the darker colours on all of the walls for a dramatic room, but Gem has used it as a feature only. The other walls are in Resene Ditto, an unusual white with a pink undertone. She's then pulled in a variety of mid-toned stony neutrals like Resene Resene Stonewashed for the fireplace, Resene Triple Napa for the legs of the brass-topped table, Resene Quarter Napa for the plant pot and Resene Oilskin for the vase. In our second photo, she's also used
Resene Triple Tea for the rustic stool. Floorboards stained in Resene Colorwood Smoky Ash anchor the scheme. A monochromatic scheme like this is brought to life with texture - the open weave of a basket, the roughness of the plant pot, the fish-pot style pendant light and the coarsely woven linen cushion. You can also go to the other extreme and include glossy surfaces, like the beaten brass tumbler.
27
A quick look at what makes this look work: Thinking about proportions - how much black, how much white Introducing a family of secondary colour in warm midtoned neutrals. Lots of texture - mostly rough but some glossy An underlying theme of eclectic ethnic touches

Let us help you put the right plant in the right place With a passion for design and an eye for colour, textures and shapes, let Candace help you!
Thought I better let you know of the big range of fruit trees we now have in store. This is my special interest. Personally I’d rather plant something edible than pretty so I try and keep the shop well stocked with a good range of edible trees and shrubs. At the moment we have the following in stock. Grape vines, Pepino plants, Berry plants (Black berry, Boysenberry, Logan berry and a few hybrid varieties), Red and Black Currents, Feijoas (4 varieties), Passionfruit, Pomegranate, Guava (red and chilian) Tamarillos (3 varieties), Apples , Pears, Nashi Pears, and a few plum trees left. We also have 5 varieties of Olives, and a big range of citrus trees.
Of possible interest to all you jam and jelly makers (and exotic fruit collectors) out there is a palm tree called the ‘Jelly’ Palm. This South American palm hails from Brazil and is very hardy,
it does very well in average garden conditions in full sun and even coastal conditions as it is drought tolerant once established. Jelly palms have large stalks of golden yellow fruit that hang in clusters. The fruit starts off green and turns golden when it is ready to eat. Jelly palm fruits can be picked individually as they ripen, or you can pick the whole bunch in which case they tend to ripen all at once. (Probably a good idea when making jams or jellies). They will also keep well in the fridge for about a week. The taste of the fruits is said to be a combination of apple and tropical flavours (possibly apricot/ banana), and the fruit consists of soft tasty flesh over a hard seed.
New life By CANDACE STEVENSON Our deciduous trees are all springing forth. Leaves of all shapes, sizes and colours are emerging and we would like to share them with you. Here are my top pics With the Liriodendron tulipifera or Tulip tree praise should not only be given to the stunning large unique shaped leaf, but also to the beautiful tulip like flowers that cover this 30m tree in late spring early summer. From our many moisture loving willow varieties in stock for unique leaf shape/habit the corkscrew willow has to be top of my willow list. With twisted, curled trunks with a yellow bark and yellow autumn foliage this willow is a pleasure to look at even once the leaves have fallen. The range of Acers/Maples in store all have their own appeal but the Acer palmatum dissectum- Lace leaved Japanese maple has character. With dainty fine feathery burgundy foliage and weeping habit this small tree is one to show off in that sheltered spot against lush large leaved greens. Something a little different, the Poliothyrus sinensis or Chinese pearlbloom. With burgundy young
foliage changing to green but keeping burgundy stems, the real appeal is in the late summer flowers that as the name suggests bloom in tight pearl like clusters. A drought hardy specimen becoming a small tree or can be kept as a small shrub. This is a rare find.
We have many more deciduous trees bursting to life, Alders, Acer’s, Birches, Toon trees, Ginko’s, Liquid amber, Nyssa’s, London plane trees, Oaks, Robinia’s and Willows to name a few so come and check out the range at great wholesale prices.

Under 10 weeks to go before Christmas By Dianne Harris We talk about keeping it simple or doing things differently but then find ourselves caught up in the frenzy of Christmas -shopping, parties, school activities, end of year do's. A small gift here, a plate there.$$$$ Then it comes to buying for the kids -for some reason we start spending money we haven't got on things our kids don't really need, and then, to make it worse we realize this in January when the bills start rolling in. How about starting by
Deciding exactly how much you can afford to save out of your weekly spending between now and Christmas (that's if you haven't started already) and just work with that. Shopping now instead of waiting until the last minute. If you have planned how much you are going to spend then you don't need to wait "just in case a better deal comes along" Becoming creative - the internet is full of ideas and suggestions on
how to make the most simple gift look special. Making a list of all your Christmas expenses e.g. gifts, decorations, food extra outings. Being prepared. Sharing your Christmas budget plan with the family- a wellplanned budget can often fall to pieces if no one cooperates. As Dave Ramsey put it "Christmas is not an emergency. It doesn't sneak up on you. Lack of planning is not an excuse to use credit cards." (or get into debt)

Books : for all ages Etta and Otto and Russell and James, by Emma Hooper, Penguin Books, $26.95
I’ve gone. I’ve never seen the water, so I’ve gone there. I will try to remember to come back. Etta’s greatest unfulfilled wish, living in the rolling farmland of Saskatchewan, is to see the sea. And so, at the age of eightytwo she gets up very early one morning, takes a rifle and some chocolate, and in her best boots begins walking the 2000 miles to the sea. First-time novelist Emma Hooper is also a musician, and it shows: her writing hums along. This is a story of love, trust and aging gracefully. A story that spans fifty years, weaving together past and present as one (not unlike the way Etta experiences time), with different perspectives in very short chapters and letters. Remember letters? Those longedfor missives that recorded memories, longing and unfulfilled dreams? That’s what you’ll find here.
Atmospheric: the Burning Story of Climate Change (The Drum Series), by Carole Wilkinson, Black Dog Books, $21.95
Using a mixture of personal anecdotes and relevant data, Atmospheric cuts through the many voices raised around climate change to tell the history of our atmosphere, what is putting our climate at risk and what we can do about it. Perhaps what’s most inspiring about this book is the people, ordinary people, observant of change enough

to make remarkable links. This title is one of the award-winning Drum series, which brings history roaring to life using first-person accounts coupled with relevant data. While it’s recommended for use with lower and mid-secondary history classes, (comes with an education resource booklet complete with classroom ideas), it’s definitely not your average textbook. Thoroughly engaging and accessible for everyone aged 10-100.
The Sword of Summer (Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard #1), by Rick Riordan, Puffin Books, $26.00
Rick Riordan has enthralled many readers with his exciting tales of teenagers and their interactions with Greek, Roman and Egyptian gods. This new series turns to Norse mythology, and has the same sarcasm and sass to be found in his earlier works, but with a darker storyline, incorporating the violence that was part of the Viking culture; and also dealing with social issues like homelessness in a way that’s not too heavy, but doesn’t sidestep the problems and troubles of those who are homeless (such as their invisibility to other members of society, and the suspiciousness that often becomes part of the homeless person’s personality). Yet this has plenty of action and laugh-out-loud humour, especially HILARIOUS chapter titles. Teenage fans of the Percy Jackson series will eat this up.
Wolf Wilder, by Katherine Rundell, Bloomsbury, $18.95
Humans, on the whole, Feo could take or leave: there was only one person she loved properly, with the sort of fierce pride that gets people into trouble, or prison, or history books.
n
34 Porowini Ave, Whangarei
Feo is a strong and refreshing main character and supporting characters are equally appealing. Add a sweeping, snowy landscape, ballet, gold, a budding revolution and wolves; the result is a wonderfully original story with a fairy-tale feel about it. Great for intermediate readers and older, this will appeal to Eva Ibbotson or Philip Pullman fans or readers of Barbara Else’s Tales of Fontania series.
An Eagle in the Snow, by Michael Morpurgo, HarperCollins, $24.95 1940. The train is under attack. In the darkness, sheltering in a railway tunnel, the stranger in the carriage with Barney and his mother tells them a story to pass the time. And what a story. Classic Morpurgo, short, powerful fiction that is rooted in history and the real people that make history.
Terry Teo and the Gunrunners, by Bob Kerr and Stephen Ballantyne, Earthsend Publishing, $24.95
Terry Teo is not your average schoolboy – he’s a skateboarding super-sleuth! Stumbling headfirst into the criminal schemes of the villainous Ray Vegas, Terry must use all his street smarts as well as those of his karate-chopping sister,
Reviews: ANNEMARIE fLORIAN, STORYTIME
Polly, and older brother, Ted, to save the day! Originally published in 1982, this is a classic Kiwi take on the Tintin graphic novel. It has been digitally remastered and restored, allowing today’s readers to experience Terry’s first adventure in vibrant watercolour. A ripping adventure with lots of laughs along the way.
Accompanied by lively pencil and watercolour illustrations, the end result is a book that the youngest child and the oldest adult will want to read again and again.
Imaginary Fred, by Eoin Colfer and Oliver Jeffers, HarperCollins, $29.99
If you had a box, what would you do with it? Four friends with boxes, and what’s inside? The contents of each box are of interest for a while, but the friends soon turn their attention to the boxes themselves. What could they do with them? An inspiring lift-the-flap book which celebrates the creative possibilities and joy of boxes. (Note to Father Christmas: for all those tiny adventurers, a box would be perfect!)
Fred is the best imaginary friend you could ever hope for, but no matter how hard he tries, the same thing always happens: his friend finds a real friend in the real world, and Fred fades away, bit by bit… Then one day, a boy called Sam wishes for a friend, and Fred appears! For a while, everything is perfect… Perfect, yes! Perfect chemistry between Jeffer’s quirky artwork and Colfer’s equally witty story, this is a picture book that will resonate for all ages.
A Great Big Cuddle: Poems for the Very Young, by Michael Rosen and Chris Riddell, Walker Books, $34.95 Cuddles and puddles, mangos that tango and a terrible, berrible… These thirty-six nonsense verses have the feel of classic nursery rhymes; they play with rhymy language and sound, so tickle the ear and set your feet tapping. Exuberant and perfect for reading aloud.
Box, by Min Flyte and Rosalind Beardshaw, Nosy Crow, $22.95
Be Brave, Pink Piglet, by Phil Cummings and Sarah Davis, Lothian Books, $19.95
Tells the story of a timid little piglet who leaves his mother’s side for the very first time, trotting out into the world and encountering new experiences. At first he’s frightened by the animals he meets; but gathers nerve as he ventures on. I read this book to my 2 year old grandson, who attended to the story from start to finish, then start to finish again – “Ano, ano!” this bilingual boy demanded. With bright and breezy illustrations and text, he could relate to this gently humorous story about living the moment and finding courage within yourself along the way.
