Last-minute, low-key wedding runs perfect on Fiji Time

Fiji is renowned forhavingits ownleisurely senseoftimeand MaureenMcLaren’s nuptials certainlyencompassed that, beginningan hour after the scheduledceremony.

After-all,shewasstillinhertrackies cookingupastorminthekitchen asherguestsarrivedatthemodest three-bedroomOnerahivenueshe’s calledhomeforover20years

“Everyonewassaying,‘You’renotdressed yet!’shelaughs.“Buteverythingjustflowed. TheywereallsayinghowcalmIwas,butinthe morningIhadtakenalongshoweranddoneall mymake-upandlaidmydressout.”

Withtheceremonyplannedtostart at1pm,friendswerestillconvertingthe drivewayintoaweddingvenueat1.30pm. Then,at2pm,“Iliterallyjustputonmydress andwalkedoutside”

There,waitingforher,alongwith65guests, washerhusband-to-beMarkOxborough.

ThetwometatWhangāreibarBacio inMay2019but,ifitweren’tforsome interventionfromMark’smotherseveral yearsearlier,theymightneverhavestopped tochat.Maureen,aSignatureHairDesign hairdresser,explains:

“We’djustgonetoaSignatureworkdoand Iwassoberdriving.Attheendofthenight,my friendwantedtogotoBaciosforonelastdrink WewalkedinandMarkcameuptome.Hewas smilingatme,likeheknewmeandIthought, ‘Ohmygosh,thisguythinksheknowsmebutI thinkhe’smistaken’

“Thenhesaid,‘IsyournameMaureen?’andI waslike,‘Howdoyouknowmyname?’Hesaid hisfullnameandIclicked–myclient’sson!”

Fouryear’sprior,Maureen’sclient Anjeanettehadsuggestedshemeetherson Mark,now35.However,havingjustfinished arelationship,Maureen,37,wasn’treadyfor another.ButAnjeanettehadtoldMarkabout herlovelyhairdresserandshownhimher photo.WhenMaureenwalkedintoBacio,Mark recognisedhersmileinstantly “Wetalkedforagoodhour,”sherecalls, sayingshewasattractedtohisgreeneyes. “AndIsaidweshouldhavelunchsometime.He endeduptextingmetwoweekslater!”

Fromthere,theywereinseparable,with Mark,originallyfromKaitaia,movinginto Maureen’sfamilyhome,whereshelivedwith hermumandstep-dadRosswhohadraised Maureen,anonlychild,sinceshewastwo.Ross, now99andfromtheSouthIsland,hadbeen livinginLautoka,FijiwhenhemetMaureen’s motherAnnie.

ShefirstvisitedNewZealandin1991but, findingtheSouthIslandtoocold,theysettledin thenorthin1993.

WhenRoss’healthtookaturn,Mark proposedinMay2021andtheyfast-trackeda weddingforSeptember

weretoldbythedoctorsthatRoss’cancerhad spreadto98percentofhisbody,”Maureen explains.“Weprettymuchplanneditinthe finaltwoweeksbeforethedate–Iwouldn’t recommendit!”shelaughs.

WithCovidatitspeak,thenumberofguests allowedateventswasfluctuatingandwith Rossunabletotravel,theysettledon65onthe drivewayoftheirsuburbanhomewherethey havehostedplentyofcelebrations,including babyshowersandhighteas.

“Ilovedecorating,”enthusesMaureen.“I visualizeitinmyheadfirstandthenIstart buyingeverything.

“Iwantedittobewhiteandgoldandreally wantedeveryonetowearwhitetomywedding butalotofpeoplesaidtheydidn’tsuitwhiteso wehadwhite/creamwithneutraltones.”

Theydecidedtoincorporateaspectsof boththeirFijianandMāoricultures,withisland

elementsincludinglei(salusalu),andfans embroideredwiththeirnames,andtapacloth.

“MumorderedleisfromFijiandtheystill hadn’tarrivedthedaybefore.Afewofthe auntiescameoverthenightbeforeandbrought theirownleisasback-up,thoughtheyweren’t matching.Thenat10amontheSaturday(the dayofthewedding),thecouriershowedup withthem!”

Havingbeengiftedacake,madebyoneof herclients,alongwithshoesandjewelleryfrom another,andaworkmatelightlycurlingher hairwhichsheadornedwithaflowercrown, theweddingcostatotalofaround$8,000.

“Iwantedareallynicebiggrazingtableso wewentallroundtowntobuyeverything.I cookedtheseafoodboilandwehiredKiwiKai forthefrybreadandMaunuRoastdidtheroast. Itendedupworkingoutto$14perheadand wasdeliveredandsetupforfree!”

Withalong-heldlovefortheold-fashioned blueandwhiteWillowplates,Maureenmadean exceptiontothebudgetandpurchasedthese forhergueststodinefrom.Fortheflowers, sheandhermumorderedwhiteflowersand eucalyptusleavesfromBethanyGardenswhich Annieturnedintofloralarrangements.

Threegazeboswereerectedthenight before,alongwithlights,andonSaturdayat 7.30am,Maureen’sfriendsshoweduptostart decorating,finishingat1.30pm.

“Thatwasfull-on!ButitwaswhatIhad envisioned.”

OnSaturdaySeptember25,againstthe odds,theweathercomplied.“Itwastheonly sunnydaythatmonthandwithnowind-we weresoblessed.

“Whenwelookbackonit,Ican’tbelievewe pulleditalloffinthatshortamountoftime.It wasallwhatI’denvisagedinmyheadandwe weresurroundedbyalltherightpeople.Itwas

allverylow-key,wejustwantedeveryoneto feelcomfortableandenjoyit.”

FortheMāoriculturalside,Mark’sdadRob saidamihi(speech)forthecoupleandendedit withawaiata.Thedrivewaycelebrationcarried onintotheweehoursand,severalmonths later,apregnantMaureenthrewanotherparty atthesamelocation–thistimetocelebratea babyshowerwithateddybearteapartytheme fortheirunbornson.Their70guestswereasked towearblueandwhite.

MarkJunior–MJforshort–wasbornon May7,2022.Toeveryone’sdelight,Rosshas beenpresentatalleventsandtheyarehoping hewillbeatMJ’sfirstbirthday,whichMaureen iswellintoplanning.

Alast-minute venue diversion… abeach photographysession amid hail andthunder storms resulting in arippedbridalgown… then stranded lodgerswith thebride andgroom on their weddingnight -wereall part of thefun of a2023Northland “summer” wedding.And that wasjustfor onecouple

ButforTomandAlexOnley(neeKelly), althoughchaotic,theirweddingdayis fulloffondmemories.

TheychosetheMangawhaiHeadsSurfClub venueaftergettingengagedearlylastyear. Butwhenheavyraincausedasliprendering thedamagedbuildingunusable,theyhada month’swarningtofindanothervenuefortheir February24nuptials.

“Wethought,it’sstillFebruary,thecyclone’s beenandgone,wecangetmarriedonthe beach,it’llbefine,”saysAlex,24.“Butthen therewasafreakweathereventinMangawhai withflash-floodingandweatherstormsonthe weddingday ”

Thecouple,wholiveinWhangārei,decided ontheirfavouriteMangawhaibeachand,albeit ascaleddownweddingduetoCovid,had everythinghiredforayear

“TomisBritishandwechosenowbecause wethoughtwecouldshowhisfamilyfromthe UKanicekiwisummer.”

Ontheweddingday,withblueskiesand brilliantsunshineinWhangārei,theysetoutfor Mangawhai,onlyfortheweathertodeteriorate beforetheireyes.Withguestsarrivingatthe beachwhereTom,28,waswaitingforhisbride, thewindpickeduptobecomegale-force.Then thesearainbegancominginanditbecame apparenttheywouldneedtoleave.

Theaislerouteencompassedsteppingout ofthebedroomontothedeck,backinthrough thediningroomandintotheloungewithguests standingaroundthekitchenislandoftheopenplanspace.

“Wejustwingeditand,withtheflowersand candles,itlookedbeautifulbutitwasreallyon thefly.Witheveryone’shelp,wehadalovely ceremony,”saysAlex,addingthatitwasvery stressfulforeveryonehelpingout

“MyhusbandandIarequitecalmpeople andwedidn’trealisewewerebuteveryone kepttellingushowwellwewerehandlingit.”

However,therewasmoredramatocome; followingtheceremony,therainstoppedso thecoupleriskedduckingbacktothebeach foraphotoshoot.Then,severalphotosin, everythingunraveled.

“Itstartedhailingandtherewere thunderstorms.Sandwaswhippingupall throughthebodiceofmydressanditgotso heavy,itstartedrippinglayersofthetulleon thebottom,soallthegoodthingshappened,” describesAlex.

Meanwhile,Alexwasgettingreadytoleave theirhiredaccommodation,whenshegotthe calltostayput

“Luckilywehadrentedaplaceat MangawhaiHeads,whichIhadpre-approvedas aback-upforthereception.Ijustdidn’trealise we’dbegettingmarriedthere,”shelaughs. “Ourfamiliescreatedamake-shiftceremony space;theyclearedfurnitureandwhippedup decorationsandhadtoworkouthowtocreate a10-meteraisle!”

Backatthebach,thereceptiontookplace butwithflash-floodingthroughthearea,cars werenowtrappedandpeoplewerebeing evacuated.ForsomeofAlexandTom’swedding group,itwastoolate

“Thephotographergotstuckwithusuntil 10pmandherhusbandendedupjoiningus. Myuncleandhisfamilywerecampingatthe holidayparkwhichflash-floodedsohehadto parkhiscaravanonthelawnatourbachso atnotimeovertheweekendwereweonour own,”shelaughs.“Butwewerehappytohave everyonestay,itwasn’taproblem.”

Inaddition,Tom,whousedtorunthe emergencycall-outsquadatOrewa,offered tobeoncall,though,thankfully,hisphone remainedsilent

“Wewerejustveryfortunatethatour celebrantDarcie(Price)andphotographerwere bothsohelpfulandwillingtogowithwhatever neededtobedonetogetitovertheline.

“Wehavenoregretsandweareevendoing ourextendedweddingshootbecauseitwassuch amemorabledayandfulloflove.Iwouldn’t changeathinganditwillstillgodowninhistory whetherit’sfortherightorwrongreason.”

1924 Hudson Terraplane

Carsfromthe1930sarealwaysadmiredfortheirstyle andelegance;andwhilePackardmotorcarscertainlyfit thisdescription,othercars,suchasthePackardMotor Museum’s1937HudsonTerraplane,alsocomeunderthis descriptiveumbrella.

TheHudsonMotorCarCompanywasformedin1909.The venturewasfinancedbyJ.L.Hudson,headofthefamous Detroitdepartmentstorebearinghisname.The firstcarHudsonproducedwasa4-cylindercarof conventionaldesign.Hudsonaimedtoproduce carsthatwerealow-pricedalternativetovehicles manufacturedbyFordorChevrolet.

Interestingly,the1919Hudson’sformedthe backboneofNewZealand’s‘servicecar’network duringthe1920s.

HudsonbuilttheTerraplanefrom1932to 1938.Initially,thecarwasbrandedastheEssexTerraplane,asearliervehiclesbuiltbythecompany werecalledEssex.Butin1934,theEssexnamewas droppedandthecarbecamesimplytheTerraplane.

TheTerraplanewasmanufacturedwith acompletesteelbodyandaseamlessroof ofsolidsteel.Thiswasapioneeringmove byTerraplanewithinthelow-pricedcars, improvingsafety.Thecarsofferedlotsof internalroomforitsoccupantsandtheir luggage.Thesevehiclescameinavarietyof bodystyles,suchasconvertibles,utilitycoupes andtrucks.Thecarswereofferedinseven standardcoloursandfiveoptionalcolours.Our carisasix-cylinder,four-doorsedan.

“That’saheapofwasteandwethinkalotofthis couldhavebeenreused,recycledorcomposted. Forexample,organicwaste,includingbothfood andgardenwastemakesuparound23percent ofwastegoingtolandfill,mostofwhichcouldbe composted.Wealsothrowawaylotsofplastic,paper, metal,glassandtimber.Whenaddedtogether,this accountsforafurther41percent,whichcouldbe recycledorrecoveredinsomeway.”

Hesaysotherwastecategoriesinclude constructionrubble(11percent),textiles(7percent), nappies(7percent),hazardouswaste(1percent), andrubber(1percent).
