LukeandLauraNobilodroveoverthe crestofTutukakahillandreluctantly peereddownatthetsunami-induced marinacarnagebelow,scanningforsigns oftheirnewvessel Hookie

Approachingthepier,theirshearts droppedwhentheyspottedthewreckage ofalargecatamaranrightinfrontof Hookie Butthenamiracle.

“Wewereamazedtoseeourboat completelyunscathed,”Luketells.“Boatson eithersideofuswerewrite-offs.Itwasabit ofamiracle.”

Thecouplehadbeenexpectingthe worst,basedontheirlucksincepurchasing thevesselandtakingoveritscharterfishing businessonlymonthsearlier.Thatwas September2021and,severalweekslater, theyenteredthenationwidelockdown, losingthreemonthsofpre-bookingswhich camewiththebusiness.

“Wechewedthroughallourstarting contingencyandgotdownto$200inthe bankaccountwhilefindingoutwewere noteligibleforanyresurgencepaymentsor wagesubsidiesbecauseourbusinesswas toonew,”Lukerecalls.

Whenthegatesfinallyopened,theyhad abusyfewweeks,butthenthetsunamihit TutukakaMarina.

Lukeremembers:“Wedroveoverthehill tothemarina,consolingeachotherthatwe hadtrulygivenitourall,butthestarswere justnotalignedforusinthis.”

Despitethisstrokeofluck,allthe challenges,followedbyamajorunexpected boatmaintenanceissueafterthe“lean period”oflastwinter,havetestedtheir mettlebutLuke,afatheroftwolittlieswith Laura,saysthehurdleshavegiventhemthe opportunitytoclarifygoalsforthebusiness andthevaluestheyintendtoholdonto

Akeenfishermanfromtheageoffour, Lukehasbeenfascinatedwiththeseaand everythingwithinsince.Aftercompleting

marinetechnologystudies,heupgradedhis skipper’sticketandanopportunityaroseto workonalive-a-boardchartervesselwhich visitedalltheoffshorefishinggroundshe’d onlydreamedofvisiting.Heworkedthis dreamjobforoveradecadebeforemoving toTutukaka,wherehewaswell-familiar withthecoast,havingspentmanyateen summer

Thencametheopportunitytotakeover Fish Tutukaka offeringbothfullandhalf-day trips,includingbiggamefishing.However, withitnowdiversifyingintooffering snorkelling,stand-uppaddleboarding, exploringtheworld-famousPoorKnights marinereserve,andbirdwatching,aname changetoTutukakaAdventuresisonthe cards.

Withqualificationsinbothfreshwater andmarineecology,outdooradventure andwithhissignificantexperienceinelite recreationalcharters,Lukehashelped manypeoplecatchtheirfishofalifetime whilekeepingtheocean’sbestinterestat heartand,thissummer,businesshasbeen flowingwithbothnationalandinternational tourists,aswellaslocals.

Todayheishostinga“ladiesfishingtrip” forJodiBryant,MariaMatussevichand VanessaJenningstoexperiencetheirfirst charterfishingexcursion…

It’s astunning Thursday morning andall is calm on the beautiful turquoisewatersof theTutukakaMarina.

WeheadtoDockMandarecheerily greetedbyourskipperLuke,who showsusaroundhis32-ftlocally custom-builtsportfisher Hookie hasafullwalk-aroundlayoutandissurveyed for12passengers,thoughsixisidealforfishing trips,Lukeexplains.Afteradebrief,wepopour lunch–whichisallthat’srequiredtobringon thesetrips-intothechillybinandLukeasksus whatwe’dliketocatchonthetrip

Justmybiggestfish,ismyreply,and,while Maria’sansweristocatchafishbiggerthan herson’spersonalbest,Vanessa’sboss,who hasgivenherthedayoffwork,hasjokingly requestedshebringbackayellowfintuna. Lukeseemsconfidentoftheformertwoand wesetout

Therehasbeenbigswellsthisweekbut today,ithasstartedtocalmdown.Still,wecan seelargewavescrashingintotherocksahead andknowwe’reinforabitofaride.Indeed,it feelslikeanexhilaratingrollercoasterriding uptheapproachingwave,thensoftlybumping down–unlikethesharpimpactofasmaller boat-sendingsprayflying,yetmissingus.But that’sthedifferencebetweenalarge,sturdy versatilevesselandasmallcraftandIwould notwanttobeinoneofthoserightnow.

WeareheadedinWhangāreiHeads’ directionandLukespotssomewhalesinthe distance,whichheslowsdowntopointout.He alsosometimessightslesscommonspecies suchasturtlesandmantarays,whichvisit duringourwarmermonths.

Wearenowincalmerwatersandmotoring alongwhenMaria’shatfliesoffandLuketurns aroundandconductssomeclevermanoeuvring whileIleanoverwiththenettoscoopitup aftermissingafewattempts.Withour“first catchoftheday”wecarryonoutuntilwe

areatTaiharuruPointand,accordingtothe fishfinder,in80mdeepwaterwithlotsof circulatingfish!

Lukelowerstheanchorinthispicturesque spotwithLittleBarrier,theHenandChickens andMokohinauIslandsinthedistance.It’sa dayforlotsofsunscreen,blue,bluewaters and…anaudienceofbirds!Theysoon congregateandtakefront-rowseatsfloating beforeus,justwatchingandwaiting.Therefore, we’vegottobequickaswelowerthebait ortheselazyfisher-type,whohaveawhole plethoraofseafoodaroundthem,willduck-dive andtrytopeckitoffthehook.Ioncehookeda cheekyseagullmid-cast,andhavingtoreelina flappingbird,isnotpleasant

Luke hands us the lines he has baited and, by the way, it feels very lazyand ‘princessy’ to notbebaiting our own, but he insists it’spart of the service. Luke uses a rangeofskipjack tuna, mulletand pilchard forbait on dual hooks and, rather than casting –which could actually be rather hazardous all round when youpictureit, we justdropthe line… all 80m deep!

DowntheydescendandIwatchtheline reelingout,thinkingofthelongwindbackin, possiblywithsomethingheavyattached.Sure enough,afterfasteningherfreespool,Vanessa’s rodbeginstocurve.Shebeginswinding,justas myrodstartstippingtowardtheocean.

It’sdifferentoutthisdeepand,coupledwith thetypesofrodweareusing,youdon’tgetthe sharptugofabitewhenfishinginshallower waterssoit’seasytoputanymovement downtothepulloftheocean.However,Luke confirmsIhaveafishattachedsoIbegin winding…andwinding,whiletryingtokeepmy balancewiththegentleswell.

Meanwhile,Vanessahasbroughtinapretty, frillybrightorangeseaperch,which,asis customwiththefirstfishoftheday,shethrows back…justasabeautifulcolouremerges belowthesurfacebeforeme.I’vecaughttwo goldensnapper,Lukedeclares.Thesefishare sovibrant,theylookliketheyshouldresidein anaquarium.Butitturnsoutthereareplenty morewheretheycamefromasMaria’sline becomesactiveandshesubsequentlyreelsina decent-sizedsnapper

It’sallgowithusreelinginasteadystream ofthesevarieties,aswellasaterakihi,and

Lukehashishandsfullbaiting,andunhooking fishforthenextfewhours!Ononeparticular tripthisseason,Luketellsustheycaught14 differentspecies.Othercommontablefish encounteredonhistripsincludetrevally, JohnDory,gurnard,redsnapper,Kingfish andhāpuka,withmarlinandtunaalso availableduringthesummerseason.

Ishouldprobablymentionherewhathas

alsobeenkeepingmeoccupiedformuch ofthistrip;onthewayoutinthebigswell,I begantofeelnauseous,whichincreasedafter westopped.Usuallythehardyoneonaboat whileothersfeelqueasy,Iwasexperiencing myfirstseasickness.Afterfightingitfora coupleofhours,Ieventuallyhavetorollwith itso,warningtheothersonboardtoremain starboard,therearefrequentvisitstoport

But,perhapsmy“berleybomb”overboard doesthetrickbecause,whilereturningtomy newly-baitedlinewhichI’dhurriedlyhadtoplace intherodholder,Inoticeitisgoingalittlecrazy.

IgrabitandbeginwindingandLukeissoon atmyside.

Itdoesn’ttakelongtogettired–not lethargyfromseasicknessbutaphysicaltire, andLukehelpfullyfastensaGimbalbeltforme toplacetherodwhileIwindandwind,silently prayingIdon’tgetanotherwaveofnauseaand havetoabandonrodinthemidstofmybig moment.Hecoachesmeonliftingtherodwith theriseinswellbeforeloweringitandwinding andIdothisforseveralminutesbeforealargish massofsilverappearsbelowsurface.I’dcaught abigdaddysnapper!

Lukegrabsthenetandscoopsiton-board estimatingitsweightaround8Ib.Hemust’ve seenitallbutsomehowstillmanagestoget excitedforusandcongratulatesusonourcatch sowefeelverycleverindeed!

“Istillgetarealbuzzfrompeoplecatching theirfirstorbiggestfishandwhenpeoplesay me'thatwasanincredibleexperienceandI'll neverforgetit',I'mthankfulI'mabletoprovide suchaservicewherepeoplemakelife-long memories,”heexplains,addingthateverytrip memorabletohimfordifferentreasons. Meanwhile,theothersarestillreelingthem inand,withanimpressiveline-upinthechilly bin,despitethrowingmanyback,wedecideto

toourdelight,dolphinsaredescendingfrom everywherewelook! Lukeconfirmsweare surroundedbyasuper-podofupto100both adultandbabydolphinswhoproceedtotreat ustooneepicshowwhilewestandandmarvel.

Itisallabitemotionaltofeelsosick,yet catchmybiggestfishandthenbeinabsolute dolphinheaven!Mydesireforlandisnow forgottenandIcouldstayhereforever

Oneofthemostmemorablemomentsof mylifeisreturningfromthePoorKnightson aschoolsnorkellingtripasa15-year-oldand spottingapodofdolphins.Ididn’thesitateto jumpoverboardandswimwiththem.Despite newregulationsagainstthisthesedays,this momentisrightupthere.Theyarehaving agrandoldtimeandaresoclose,they’re evenswimmingunderourboat.But,alas,we eventuallyhavetopartways.

WereturntothemarinaandLukeshareshis knowledgeonfilletingandhowbesttostore themforlongevitybeforedivvyingthemupfor ourchillybins.*Grabbingouruneatenlunches, webidfarewellandcontentedlyheadhome withfishonthemenu.

Haveyoueverwonderedwhyfire enginesarered?Intheearly yearsofmotoring,mostvehicles werepaintedblack.Redwasan expensivecolour,soeasilydistinguished fromblack;therefore,fireengines,suchas our1924Chevroletfiretruck,weregenerally paintedredforeasyidentification.

ThePackardMotorMuseumdisplays severalfireengines.Theyrangefromour 1913Dennisfiretruckthroughtoour1983 International.

Theconceptofafiretruckhasbeen aroundsincethebeginningofthe1800sand, backthen,wasbasicallyawaterpumpon wheelspulledbyhorses.Priortothat,people movedwaterwiththebucketbrigade–aline ofmenpassingbucketsofwatertothefire.

Thefirst‘self-propelled’fireenginearrived inNewZealandin1903andwasprocured bytheWanganuiFireBrigade.Thisengine wasdrivenbysteam.In1906Auckland andWellingtonalsoobtainedsteamfire engines.Bythemid-1920s,mostfire brigadesweremotorised.
