hen asked to describe her life in one word, owner of local Whangrei business A’fare Catering Mandy Edge says ‘chaos’. As if running a full-time venue and catering business wasn’t enough, Mandy is also training to compete in the Penticton 2017 ITU World Championship Multisport Festival in Canada – an intense, international triathlon event. Mandy is representing New Zealand at the event on August 18, competing in a duathlon for the Triathlon New Zealand Team alongside four other Northlanders, whose ages range from 16 to 52. To be prepared to run 7.5 kilometres a cycle 20 kilometres, Mandy has been given a rigorous training program from her coach Christine Fraser-Kitchen, along with the support of her husband Stu who is a co-manager of the team. “There is a lot of planning involved, including purchasing flights, applying for visas. Also ensuring the business will run effectively while I’m away. It is a huge commitment and involves a lot of responsibility in terms of representing my country,” she says. The local business owner comments that it’s an insane juggling act to ensure everything is getting enough attention: family, business and training. This is the biggest hurdle, yet the feeling at the starting line will be worth it. This weekend, Mandy plans to fit in a 1 hour and 20 minute cycle ride on Saturday and Sunday as well as working around 10 hours a day at A’fare – meaning her mornings will start at 5.30am. Her schedule involves a lot of running and cycling to she her ready for the World Championships. “This week I have to ride to work four times. I also do strength, core and stretch training. Physiotherapy and regular massages are also essential as they ensure my body will be in good form before heading over. Avoiding injury is a big part of the lead up to the event, to the point where I feel like I’m wrapping myself in cotton wool. When I ride to work I am constantly aware of all the vehicles and hazards.” Local support for Mandy has come in many forms, from Kensington Fitness Centre, Hatea Harriers, Park Run, Whangarei Athletics, Whangarei Triathlon Club, Avanti Plus and Smith Shoes - to name a few. She says that without this local support and sponsorship it may not have been possible to see her dream through. “I am forever thankful. I also wouldn’t be able to do this without the huge commitment and support from my staff. This is her second time competing, having completed the event last year in Spain.

“It’s an insane juggling act to ensure everything is getting enough attention: family, business and training.

D

ue to popular demand, the world of retail fashion has become tran-seasonal.

We’ve finally listened. It’s no longer about stocking our shops with inseason garments that cater for the sedentary, the baby boomers are on the move. This comfortably retired flock are out and about exploring exotic locations, languishing on the decks of super yachts, fine dining, or hob knobbing in First Class as they commute from one babysitting appointment to the next. So what are we baby boomers wearing as we circumnavigate the globe? We are the natural fibre girls, the layering ladies, the seekers of comfort, elastic waist with attitude ladies. We don’t want ‘old’ or ‘frumpy’. We carry our baby boomer’s badge with pride, dignity and glamour, so it’s Vassalli of course. New Zealand designed, Chinese made Vassalli. The most flattering cotton, pull-up pant ever. They breathe and have an immensely comfortable elastic waist with just enough spandex to withstand the holiday indulgence. Natural fibres are a baby boomer’s friend with sudden temperature changes being a major issue for most of us! We don’t like ironing, so when travelling, quick-dry garments that don’t crease are a must. Cottons and linens are not like the

fabrics of old, shrinkage is minimal and creases are easily sorted with dryers and coat hangers. Ticking all of the boxes above is Greystate, our new tran-seasonal label–natty, stylish, 100% cotton garments that roll up into a ball and don’t weigh you down. “Have you got any summer stock? I’m going on a cruise next month, it’s going to be scorching and there’s nothing left in the shops.” We’ve waved you off for 32 years and we’re delighted to offer you a fabulous array of clothing that transcends seasons, accommodating your baby boomer lifestyle. Bon Voyage.

s Crowded House sang, New Zealand weather is infamous for being four seasons in one day, with sun one minute and rain the next. My approach to rain has always been to just get wet - as I never wear a jacket. But a little preparation will keep you dry. These lightweight jackets can be thrown in a tote bag or keep one in the office for those unpredictable days. Their urban look and practical feel makes them a good fit with professional and casual wear. Keep an umbrella in your boot. Umbrellas are another thing I usually give up on - too many bad, and embarrassing experiences when it blows inside out. Everyone passing looks at you in sympathy but walks on while you frantically try to pull it back the right way. But I am told you cannot go wrong with a Blunt classic as it is built to stand New Zealand weather which can be not only wet, but windy and wild. As for footwear, channel Paddington in a pair of gorgeous red Hunter wellies and you will just want to leap around and splash in those puddles.

BY KILEY BRYDON - CACI WHANGAREI

A

s the Treatment Co-ordinator at Caci Clinic Whangarei, it is my passion to help

ladies start their skin journey and recommend the best treatments to achieve their results. Being in the beauty industry for 18 years, I have specialised in all aspects,

from basic beauty to specialised skin treatments. As I am getting married to my amazing partner in March 2018 at the beautiful Lodge

9 in Tutukaka, I thought it would be a great opportunity to personally experience and chronicle the journey of one of our most advanced skin treatments - Fractional Co2 Laser. This gives me the chance to explain in more depth what to expect during treatment. Like any bride, I want to look amazing on my special day and skin is a huge part of the preparation. I am knocking on 40 and, in my early 20s, I got a really bad case of chickenpox, leaving a fair amount of scarring to my face. This treatment is great for helping improve the texture and tone of the skin. Prior to having a Fractional Co2 Laser, I prepped my skin with conditioning treatments, including Microdermabrasion, and Sonophoresis infusions.

MY EXPERIENCE:

Day 1: Skin felt very hot, and tight. Looked sunburnt. Physically I felt a bit low on energy. Day 2: Skin still had sunburnt effect. Felt dry and dehydrated. Grid marks starting to show. Physically felt a lot better. Day 3: Skin slightly red, very similar to day 2. Day 4: Grid marks starting to heal with brown colouration. Felt extremely dry by this stage. Day 5: Slightly red, grid marks starting to fade. Day 6: Had Hydration facial to boost skin’s moisture. To be continued …

Hot White Now Strand Salon owner Marilyn Fifield talks to Savvy readers about ideals and techniques for cutting and colouring grey hair a specialty of the Strand Salon.

Having trouble knowing what to do with your grey hair?

“Hot White Now” is what’s hot right now and, with the many baby boomers continuing to work, yet wanting to hide their grey and still look good, this current trend is the go-to.

A

short, funky cut always looks great on grey hair and many women have dark hair in amongst the grey creating a salt and pepper look which can be aging. A way to deal with this and to get the right look is to have the ends lightened to create a more modern effect. With no visible regrowth, it is easy-maintenance and only needs to be touched up three-four times a year.

12 | SAVVY

Strand Salon have a range of silver grey tones to choose from - including silver, dove grey, grey lilac and slate grey – which can be mixed to achieve any shade on its spectrum and to vary tonal intensity, depth and brightness. Their range is designed to enhance natural white and blend salt and pepper shades. However, it’s not just the older generation opting for these shades; many young ladies are still following the grey trend.

HOT TIPS:

Grey hair can look very aging unless beautifully cut - A beautiful haircut is a must-have; Lipstick is a must; Use a silver spray or silver shampoo to tone out any yellow; Truly white tones with an icy finish are hot right now; If your natural colour is not quite white enough, go for partial colour on the ends to even it out.

Strand Salon stocks silver shampoo and brightening spray, which visibly brighten silver and white hair, neutralising dullness and creating intense light reflection.

Some quick facts about prosthetic eyes:

By Dr Keith Pine BSc (Psych), MBA, PhD (Optom), MIMPT

EYE CENTRE - PRIMECARE partners with the NZ PROSTHETIC EYE SERVICE to make, fit and maintain prosthetic eyes worn by 146 Northland patients

WITH THE EYE CENTRE - PRIMECARE

T

he earliest known prosthetic eye was found buried with a woman in Shahr-I Sokhta, Iran. It dated back to 2900–2800 BC and was made of bitumen paste covered with a thin layer of gold, engraved with a central iris from which lines radiated out like the rays of the sun. Published with kind permission of Kaveh Farrokh at http:// kavehfarrokh.com There are approximately 3,000 prosthetic eye wearers in New Zealand. Eye-loss is due to accidents (61%), medical conditions (30%) and congenital disorders (9%). Men lose their eyes more frequently than women (62% versus 38%) and at a younger age (median for men is 22 years and women 56 years). Right eyes are lost marginally more frequently than left eyes. (55% versus 45%). The cost of prosthetic eyes is mostly covered by the hospital where the eye is removed or by ACC if caused by accident. Replacements are subsidised by the Ministry of Health and/or by private health insurance.

Prosthetic eye research: Northland’s prosthetic eye wearers have punched way above their weight when it comes to helping with prosthetic eye research. Along with other New Zealanders, they have contributed to more scientific papers than any other group of prosthetic eye wearers in the world. Some, like Mona Davies even feature in the world’s first evidence based textbook on prosthetic eyes.

Mona Davies: “When my husband Reese and I were fencing contractors, we moved around a lot and lived in tents on the properties we worked on. In 1974 we were clearing old fencing wire from a kiwifruit orchard. I cut a wire and one end sprang up and struck my right eye.” Mona is a farmer (emphatically not just a ‘farmer’s wife’!). She with her late husband Reese has worked hard all her life and now lives comfortably on an 800 acre coastal farm on Taiharuru Peninsular. Their two children farm their own coastal blocks on either side of Mona’s land and not a day goes by when Mona does not see them or her three grandchildren. Mona took the loss of her eye like she does with most things in life, “she put up with it and moved on.” It wasn’t the damage to her appearance that concerned her so much as the difficulty she had parking the car and reading the ground hollows when going about the farm. What is your busyness doing to you? CORINNE AUSTIN

L

et me ask you a question… When was the last time you felt at ease? Free as a bird? Light and liberated? For most of us, those feelings are foreign and far-fetched, and the possibility of ever experiencing them is a long way from our radar. And it’s been that way for a long time. Busyness and stress causes a state of disease, a state that’s so far removed from being calm, content and healthy, yet it’s become normalised. It’s become normal to rush from one task to another, from one duty to another. It’s become normal to experience regular sickness and disease of varying intensities. It’s become normal to be frazzled, frustrated, and fiendishly fatigued. But while I say these have all become ‘normal’, normal is not what they are. They might be common, but they are not normal. And our biology knows it. Our busyness has become an addiction – one that we seem proud of. An addiction to success, to seeking more, to pushing the boundaries, and to trying to find where the greener grass lays. Our busyness has become so much of an addiction that our bodies are under constant and chronic stress – but our biological and biochemical make-up wasn’t designed for this. Did you know that 95% of all disease is caused by stress (National Institute of Health 2010)? It’s certainly an epidemic, one we must acknowledge and tackle if we are to improve the state of our health and vitality. Fatigue, irritability, sleep disruptions, anxiety, brain fog, heartburn, digestive problems, headaches and migraines, back pain, menstrual dysfunctions, and weight gain are some of the many common symptoms associated with this overwhelming and overbearing condition we

have succumbed to. There aren’t diagnostic medical tests to assess this condition, yet it’s easy to recognise. It’s the disease of busyness, the disease of chronic stress. But it’s a disease we must obliterate, because it’s doing no one any favours, least of all ourselves. How did we end up living like this? Why do we do this to ourselves? When did we forget that we are human beings, not human doings? It’s time we took life for real, for what it is – short. Freaking short. And we only get one slim chance at making it what we want it to be. When we’re on our death bed, we won’t be measuring our success of life by how many things we ticked off our never-ending to-do list. Nope, we’ll be telling our loved ones and those wanting to hear our wisdom that life instead should be measured by the fulfilment and joy we experience, by the moments that take our breath away, and by an overflowing storage of magical memories we wish not to ever forget. By being busy we miss the peace and beauty of the world. Since coming through this process myself I feel I have some critical tidbits to share – and that’s simply that the world is a wonder. And when we’re caught up in a whirlwind of worries and a manufactured manic state, we miss the absolute splendour of the world around us. Today I see and hear far more than I did a year ago – and boy, what a treasure that is. It’s time we let our busyness rest in peace. So my call to action today is this – that we stop defining ourselves by our doing, and start defining ourselves with our being. That we stop clock watching and do more world watching. That we cease measuring ticks on a to-do list and instead measure the experiences we have that steal our breath. But mostly, that we stop doing more of the things we feel we must do, and instead do more of the things we should do. Because life can be as beautiful as we make it.

5 timeless interior decorating tips

I

nterior design trends can be hard to keep up with, but they don’t have to be. Check out these five decorating tips for a home that will transcend time.

Tip 1.Always go au naturale

Take a moment to consider what elements date a home. Floors are tacky laminate, couches are covered in plastic and counters are solid surfaces. In short, everything was man made, points out Interior Design Info. A home that can stand the test of time will be made of much more organic material. You can never go wrong with a nice hardwood floor. Though, you don’t have to avoid carpeting altogether, but do consider choosing an area rug as opposed to wall-to-wall, as this will allow you to be more flexible with patterns over time. When it comes to your upholstery, instead of covering with plastic like your grandparent’s generation would have back in the day, just pick a more durable fabric. Leather is one such material that is incredibly strong, standing the test of time and it comes in several different shades so you can find the right one for your home. Replace solid surface counters with a natural option such as granite or marble - these materials are also much less absorbent, so a stain won’t ruin the finish. Go au natural with granite counters tops.

Fixed Fee $12,000

Tip 2. Pick a muted palette Again, think back to grandma’s kitchen, what colour is it? Perhaps they feature past trendy colours like guacamole green counter tops, putrid pink tiling or lemon candy yellow linoleum. Bold shades like these are great, but only in moderation. Keep your palette simple. Restrictions allow you to accessorise the rest of your home with any colour palette you want so it won’t be terribly monochromatic. Resene Anglaise is one such colour that will give your home a little bit of depth. Of course, you can always opt for the ever-classic white with Resene Quarter Alabaster!

Tip 3.Avoid bold patterns in big spaces Neutral walls match everything. Assuming you’ve followed tip two and selected a nice muted palette, you can now figure out how to work in bold patterns. Should you want to go for that accent wall, you’ll be able to do so more easily simply because neutral walls match everything. If you love big patterns, including the current trend of chevron, then you should avoid making it the backsplash tiling in your kitchen, but instead purchase mugs or decorative plates.

You can also get your furniture reupholstered, or just use slip covers. As long as the pattern is easily changeable then your home will be able to remain timeless while also being a little trendy too.

Tip 4. Take a quick history lesson When it comes to trends, history almost always repeats itself. Look to see which styling elements have remained key over the years. Some of these elements include the following: hardwood floors, white accessories, oriental rugs. As you can see, many of these have already been included in the above tips, so if you’ve been following closely, you’re already on the right track!

Tip 5. Don’t completely ignore current trends The beauty of designing your home to transcend time is that you can add in little accent pieces as decorating trends come and go. Once you have a solid design base, you can sprinkle in elements without having to completely remodel. This keeps your home feeling refreshed for years to come, instead of looking rather tired ten years down the road. Now go forth and start decorating! The fun has only just begun.

irstly, we need to determine who the bed is for, but let’s assume it is for you and your partner. The answer to this of course, is what you can afford. But you do need to bear in mind that a bed should last you 10 years, and what is the price of a great night’s sleep? Some basic spring systems are not meant for a couple to use on a regular basis, only as a guest bed, so please ask the question as to what the warranty covers , how long the warranty is for and what the weight limit is . We do have queen beds starting as low as $589.00 but these do not come with a 10 year warranty. We at BedsRus only sell

beds manufactured by Sleepyhead and the price for a quality queen bed set will start at around $1300.00. This equates to 18 cents per night each, over a 10 year period… what on earth can you purchase for that amount and wake up feeling refreshed? At the very top end of the scale your great sleep will cost you $1.65 per night, per person. And while on the subject of what you need to spend, we do offer 12 months interest free, everyday. (Conditions apply.) Quality counts. The old rule of “you get what you pay for” also applies to beds. If you scrimp and buy a poor quality bed now, you may be paying later in terms of lost sleep. Shop for the best value, not the lowest price. You spend a third of your life in bed, so buying the best bed you can afford is a healthy investment in your lifestyle.

Are mattresses getting thicker and do I still need to flip it over? Answer to the first question is yes, the thickness of mattresses has definitely increased over recent years. And no, we don’t “flip” mattresses any longer as now the great comfort layers are all on the upper side. However, we do need to spin our mattresses from head to toe in order to get even wear, and to ensure the longevity of the comfort layers. Generally the thicker the comfort layer, the more plush the mattress will be. One thing I’d like to stress is, due to the increased depth, the height of your current headboard needs to be taken into consideration. Nothing worse than getting your mattress home and realising that you’ve lost sight of your beautiful headboard due to the thickness of your new mattress. My advice is to take your headboard measurements with you to the store, or consider replacing it, but remembering the most important element is your comfort and quality of sleep. The great thing is, if purchasing a New Zealand made headboard or bedframe, manufacturers in most cases can adjust the height of your headboard at time of ordering. The other element is the depth of your fitted sheets. Most sheets on the market these days will have a 40cm drop, and will fit 90% of the current mattresses. A 50cm and 60cm drop is also available. But for comfort sake, the worst thing you can do is try and stretch your existing fitted sheets to make them work, as this will firm up your comfort level. Preshrunk cotton sheets are always best. At BedsRus Whangarei, we offer a 30 Day Comfort Warranty (conditions apply), so call in and we promise to do our best in matching you to your perfect sleep. PS: Please remember information is always free, so if you have a question or concern, please do not hesitate to call us on 0800141640 (option2), 7 days a week. I also recommend you look at our BedsRus website. ‘till next time….Cheers, Corgi

Custom made furniture is making a come back BY RYAN BOURKE

F

ewer people are buying mass produced furniture, opting instead for custom-made pieces say a team of Whangarei cabinetmakers. The team at Next Edition kitchens have been overwhelmed with orders for custom-made furniture recently. Designer Ryan Bourke puts the increase in demand down to customers wanting longer-lasting pieces. “There was a stage where furniture-making was a dying art,” he says. “Fortunately people are now seeing how disposable the imported, mass produced stuff is and they are wanting pieces that last.” Mr Bourke says people are starting to notice how their grandparents furniture will outlast a chain store piece.

“They’re realising that going with quality in the first instance will save them money in the long term.” Popular projects for Mr Bourke have included bookshelves, desks, bedside tables and TV cabinets. He says a bookshelf he made for his son five years ago still gets comments from friends and family. “It seems to be the first thing people notice when they see the kids’ playroom.” He says the process comes with a downside though. “It does come with a price tag,” he says. “Unfortunately we just can’t compete with the likes of Ali Express and large furniture importers.” Mr Bourke says a custom piece can range in price from

Specialising in all Gas Home Heating Systems and Water Heating needs

$300 to $3000. He says local manufacturing costs don’t compare to those overseas, and materials are of a better quality locally. “At the end of the day, you have to weigh up whether you will still want the piece in five years’ time.” He says his favourite projects are the more difficult ones. “I once had to make a desk that blended with existing cabinetry in the customer’s kitchen, the colour used in the kitchen had been discontinued, and lots of other suppliers had turned her away. Fortunately we were able to find a perfect match in a newer shade, the desk looked amazing!”

How to plant a tree BY DEBBIE OLDFIELD - ALTER-NATIVES

I

t can be as easy or complicated as you want to make it. Let’s face it we’ve all done it, planted a tree at a difficult time of year with little or no preparation. Just because we’ve found a plant in the garden centre that we have fallen in love with, taken home and thought, hmmmmm, now where do I put it? The best thing you can do is find out what conditions your plant likes. Does it prefer full sun, part shade, is it frost hardy, wind hardy, will it cope with damp soil or does it prefer it dry? Once you have found the perfect spot for it (preferably somewhere you can admire it from the house) then set about planting it. Dig a hole approx twice the size of the root system. Mix some compost (store bought or homemade) with some of the soil removed from the hole, 50/50 is good. Add a few slow release fertiliser tablets to the bottom of the hole, just under where the roots will be. Place your plant into the hole ensuring that it is standing straight and that the surface level will be at the same depth as it was in the

pot. Water well. Then mulch your plant to help prevent weeds competing with the plant and also to conserve water in the soil over the summer months – maybe not so critical this time of year when it is so wet! You can use bark, old carpet, or the Wool Bio-mats we have recently got into the shop. These are made from 100% recycled NZ wool, and are an easy to use option. Staking your plant is a good idea if there’s any chance of the plant/tree getting blown about. The last thing you want is your new plant to lose all its newly developed roots because it is rocking about in the wind and they are snapping off. If it’s a good size tree you are planting or a windy site I would recommend using hardwood stakes. These come in varying lengths so there’s a suitable size there for your plant and conditions. Attaching the tree to the stakes you can use Jute, elastic tree tie, anything that is natural and will eventually break down, I find a lot of the hard plastic ties tend to get forgotten about and can grow into the trunk of your tree rather than breaking. You

HARDWOOD STAKES

can also use bamboo stakes for the smaller plants that don’t need such robust support. We have these available in lengths starting at 60cm right upto 2.4m tall.

I

love that it’s not often disappointing when dining at local Thai Restaurants around town. The food is consistent; menus varied and full of flavour. This was the case at Thai Chef the other night, the reasonably new Thai addition to central Bank Street. Offering a warm atmosphere on a dark and dreary night, I came in with high expectations, these were happily met. With eyes too big for our tummies again, my dining partner and I could not make it to dessert however if we had, it would have been the sticky rice pudding hands down. Happy diners of all ages surrounded our table for two by the window and the friendly faces of the waitresses added to a pleasant experience. Personally, I can’t help going past a mixed appetiser to try a bit of everything, this one at Thai Chef’s came out much bigger than I was expecting, great for $9.50! Kraree puff, rock and roll, rainy season and sleepy pig in bed served with sweet chilli sauce - a gamble going off the menu descriptions, yet a good one. We also ordered the No Moon Tonight Honey, a restaurant favourite which was crispy moon shaped delights filled with marinated minced prawn, spices, sesame

seeds and coriander served with plum sauce - a winner apparently. There is so much to choose from here; the menus are huge. For the mains, we mixed it up between a curry and stir-fry. I went for the popular Mussamun Curry for $22.50 with braised beef in a traditional Thai mild curry. Coconut cream, potatoes, onions and roasted peanuts. Instead of a rice side (that I wouldn’t have needed) I chose the recommended Roti Bread for an extra $3 to accompany the curry dish. It was delivered to the table in a gorgeous dish heated by a candle underneath, a lovely touch. Our second order was from the Golden Wok menu for $29.90. Spicy Girl is tossed with fresh chillies, garlic, onions, capsicum, seasonal vegetables and this time, crispy pork belly for the meat. This was a beautiful dish; we shared them both, the pork offered with a side of rice. We happily dined sipping a red wine and talked about taking home a dessert for later. However, our stomachs were too satisfied with our experience at Thai Chef that we will have to save this space for the next time we book and there will be a next time!

ith the school holidays looming we all need to start thinking about entertaining the kids for the two long, cold weeks during the peak of winter. Tahere are always the usual holiday programmes on offer, but if you search deeply enough Whangarei hosts a whole range of activities to keep the kids amused and get their creative juices flowing while giving us parents the chance to get on with work or simply get them out of our hair. The Quarry Arts Centre in Selwyn Avenue actively encourages children to delve into the wonderful world of art and have designed workshops aimed specifically at

youth for these holidays including pot glazing, clay imprints and plaster casts, perfecting paper mache and making beautiful collages. The Papermill offer similar creative twoday workshops where kids can learn to make paper from scratch and then make an A5 colour pad or notepad. A serious buzz

BY CHARMAINE SOLJAK DAY ANNOUNCER, THE HITS NORTHLAND

W

e often don’t credit our more mature athletes for their tenacity and sheer grit. Using age as an excuse for being inactive is unacceptable in this day and age. Masters athletes are achieving the unthinkable physically, and have more opportunities than ever. Master athletes have three different age categories in Crossfit. The last six months have been a Crossfit journey for my partner Jason, my son Tamihana and I. We rock into our gym at 6am four times a week to find out “what our bodies can do”. I’m a woman in my 40s and stronger than I’ve been for decades. I’ve completed three crossfit comps in the last four months thanks to the support from my trainers at Barbell Jungle Crossfit, Jason, and my kids... and I’m a bit of a tutu so it was always going to attract me. Last weekend was the “Masters League Invitational” competition held at Takanini, hosted by Taumata Crossfit. So, feeling like I’ve been revolutionising the way I use my body, we roared to Auckland very excited. The wonderful thing that stood out more than anything was the three Crossfit gyms from Whangarei. The team spirit was extraordinary. We all ended up mashed together and cheering each other on. There is strength in knowing you can accomplish something alone but when you are cheered on by a community beside you, your sense of achievement is somehow richer. We had five female competitors from Whangarei showing Northland’s muscle in the metro market. I blew out my calf muscle in the last 10 seconds of my third WOD/Workout Of The Day (last of

the day thank goodness). I tore the muscle and the leg is now bruising up nicely. I look like a rugby player! Our women made you proud Northland. Rochelle Record and I representing Barbell Jungle Crossfit, Vicki Marsh from Crossfit Whangarei, Kim Grison and Sue Milner from Far North Crossfit, all putting in gutsy and strong performances. Vicki, Kim and Rochelle made the Auckland team, with Sue and I as reserves for the trip to Australia in October. This is the first TransTasman Crossfit competition over two days. The top kiwi competitor’s scores will go up against their Aussie counterparts to determine the champs. It’s a time to heal right now for me but I’m still going to the gym. I’ve got hundreds of other muscles I can work out while the leg heals with the physio Hal Blank at Whangarei Physiotherapy Services. I call him “healing by hell”- he’s choice! There’s another comp on the way in October “Two 2 Tango” a couples competition that Jason and I decided to compete in before the Invitational was announced. So life isn’t dull. I’ve been needing to figure out a new way of eating for this body of mine that keeps changing. So I’m under nutritional coaching from Ness from Far North Crossfit. Her nutrition business FitNess Nutrition is working as she coaches me on how I need to be eating. I won’t forget the serious buzz I got being with Masters from Northland at that competition. Northland athletes have a fabulous attitude. Need a new sport? Join one of the Whangarei crossfit gym’s they’re all excellent!

T

he book world mourns the loss of long time children’s book advocate John McIntyre who passed away last month. John and Ruth started The Children’s Bookshop in Wellington 25 years ago and was a regular on RadioNZ promoting reading to kids. While I didn’t have the chance to meet John I know Storytime stocked many of his recommendations and our two stores often shared ideas. We can’t replace John, but his work continues and I hope to follow in his footsteps in my own small way. Browsing around our book shelves is one of my Sunday treats now with the incredible books we have available. This month we are looking for some Storytime kids who will review our new toys and books and feature in our radio advertising. Get in touch with our Shop Manager Kelly if you’d like to become a Storytime Kid. Finally this month, we often hear parents telling the kids ‘no touching’ as they walk through the doors as it saddens me a little. We designed the store for the kids and have over 5,000 items for them to discover. A visit to Storytime is a special treat that everyone loves.

■ Austin Walkin’ Cane, from Cleveland, Ohio

S blues singer Austin Walkin’ Cane will bring his special version of “Damn Fine Blues” to the Bay of Islands Jazz and Blues Festival next month. The slide guitar impresario from Cleveland, Ohio, has played with the likes of Gregg Allman, ZZ Top and Deep Purple, so the festival will be a rare chance for New Zealanders to hear his calibre of musicianship. The Bay of Islands Jazz and Blues Festival is being held on August 11, 12 and 13. Festival organiser Shirley May says other headline acts include Suzanne Lynch and Sirrah, Australian bands the Marji Curran band and the Dixie Street All Stars, and Daniel Waho and Reset. She says every year the organising committee has strived to find the best selection of musicians, and festival goers will find plenty to enjoy this year. Other top bands include Chihiro Yamazaki and Route 14 Band from Japan; Wizard and Oz, Dale Robbins Band, Lost in Transit, Kniki and Mike Beale Project from Australia; and Brilleaux, Edwina Thorne Ensemble, Thelonius Punk, Undercover Blues Band, Feenix, Inertia and Dreams the Fleetwood Mac Experience from New Zealand. “It isn’t easy running this festival as the costs are higher and funding is ever harder to obtain. We do really well with what we can and we couldn’t do it without the sponsorship of the venues, Fullers ferries and the local accommodation houses that provide rooms for our musicians.

It’s going to be hot in the Bay of Islands next month! August 11, 12, 13

■ Marji Curran Band from Australia Mrs May, who was awarded a Queen’s Service Medal for her services to the music industry in the recent Queen’s Birthday Honours, has built up a close relationship with all of the musicians over the 30 years she has been organising the festival. “I know they all enjoy catching up with each other every year, and it’s these friendships which sometimes lead to impromptu jamming sessions between the bands. There’s something special about live performances.”

Join the creative community with a NorthTec arts qualification Emma Snell – Applied arts “I love the idea of Whangarei becoming a creative community so I want to encourage all of us to invest our skills here and to help that grow. During my last year of school, I did an art course here at NorthTec once a week – and I was hooked. Now I get to do something I love every day, and even if I’m doing aspects I don’t enjoy, I can see their necessity. I didn’t have a plan before whereas now I know applied art is my future.”

S

tudying the arts with NorthTec will give you a great head start if you want to get into the creative industries. We offer three different programmes, from level 4 certificate to degree level, and a choice of majors. With passionate and knowledgeable tutors who are all working artists, and classmates who share your creative vision, you’ll be able to really challenge yourself. If you want to break into the arts but feel you’re not ready for a high-level qualification, the New Zealand Certificate in Arts and Design is a great place to start exploring your creativity. As this is a new programme, designed for you to give the arts a try, it’s available in July at a special discounted price you will pay only 50 per cent of the normal course fee. This six-month, level 4 programme will allow you to explore and expand your techniques in a range of media. You’ll learn about art and design history, so your new skills are acquired in a context of artistic principles and conventions. The programme will also cover education and employment

pathways in arts, crafts and design, so by the time you’ve completed it you’ll be able to decide on your next steps. If you decide you want to take your studies further, NorthTec offers a level 6 Diploma in Applied Arts. Students can choose to study either Visual Arts or Digital Arts for this two-year programme. The Visual Arts diploma will teach you the skills and techniques required for working in a variety of media. You’ll study art history and New Zealand art and design, and get to grips with the creative process involved in drawing. With a range of elective courses to choose from, you’ll also get the chance to explore graphic design, photography, working with clay or sculpture. The Digital Arts option will give you a good grounding in the creative processes and teach you how to recognise the professional and ethical standards of your specialist field. You’ll cover all the essentials including digital graphics, social media and web design, before moving on to subjects as diverse as digital game development, mobile device

artists and also potential for the public to snap up a unique artwork. The challenge, Quarry staff say, is narrowing your favourites down to just one or two…or even a dozen. Great Plates can be viewed in Yvonne Rust Gallery, at the Quarry Arts Centre, from July 13 to 25. All 100 pieces are listed on TradeMe. co.nz from July 13, with auctions running for one week and generally ending in a bidding frenzy. This makes the end date July 19. This year the funds raised will go directly into the kiln facilities at the Quarry, giving a greater range of firing opportunities for the entire community. We aim to install a gas fired kiln this coming year. The Quarry staff see this as a nice match – having handmade ceramic plates helping to raise funds to improve a community ceramic workspace and facilities. The Great Plate Art Auction is an opportunity to not only get your hands on an original one of a kind artwork, but also a chance to invest in the future development in one of Whangarei’s most well loved communities. The Yvonne Rust Gallery is open from 9.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Saturday.

rt is hot right now which is ideal timing for the annual Quarry Arts Centre Great Plate. The Great Plate has become an established event in Whangarei as the annual fundraiser for the Quarry Art Centre. Each year up to one hundred artists are invited to work their creative magic on a hand thrown ceramic plate - or in some cases a hand turned wooden plate or hand cast or blown glass plate. These transformed plates are then shown in an exhibition in the Yvonne Rust Gallery and auctioned on TradeMe.co.nz with funds going to support the Quarry Arts Centre. There are no limitations or rules around what can be done with the plate which makes this event a little unpredictable and very exciting. In previous years artists have morphed the humble Great Plate into amazing pieces of sculpture, paintings, mobiles, and even spaceships. “We love the huge variety within the Great Plate exhibition, we feel so privileged to be supported by our community in this unique, creative way,” says Art Centre Manager Ali Goodman. While the Great Plate works as a fundraiser, there is the added bonus of exposure for participating

nhabiting the space where concepts of art, science and cultural knowledge intersect, Kauri Ora Mauri Ora is a curatorial endeavour by The Kauri Project dedicated to examining the relationship between people and landscape, focusing on our unique and threatened indigenous kauri forest ecology. Working in collaboration with artists, scientists, iwi and community they seek to expand awareness of the crucial place of kauri in our biological and cultural landscape, and the threat posed to this unique species by kauri dieback disease. Since the micro-organism Phytopthera agathadicida was formally identified as the cause of kauri dieback in 2008, scientists have worked to understand the disease and establish how best to protect kauri from this deadly threat. A healthy kauri forest is a wealth of diverse life, a delicate ecological network of interdependence, within which the kauri tree is a keystone species. Able to grow to ancient age and massive scale, kauri have the ability to modify the land on which they live. Around and on the kauri a host of other species live and thrive, some of them only found in this association. Late to this relationship, people have also flourished in Aotearoa/New Zealand, briefly prospering from our relationship with kauri, though at a cost to our landscape which we seek now to redress. Once a powerful presence across Northern Aotearoa, from Waikato to Cape Reinga, kauri forest now exists in scattered fragments and as a legend in the imaginations of the people. Nowhere is this history more potent than in Northland where a handful of ancient giants still stand and young kauri strive for survival, while the ghost of their kin haunt the landscape. Kauri Ora Mauri Ora brings together work by artists from across Northland and beyond to explore the complexity of our relationship with this tree and its forest. Kauri ki uta, Kauri ki tai – May Kauri once again flourish from hilltop to the sea. Curated by Ariane Craig-Smith & Chris McBride for The Kauri Project. Monday 7.30pm: On top of your own brekky, eat the kids’ abandoned Crunchy Nut Cornflakes because every bowl is worth $5. Drive to school; drive home. Eat the kids’ lunchbox scraps to reduce food waste. Watch the daylight dwindle til it’s too dark to go jogging. DO NOT GET ANY EXERCISE.

Tuesday 7am: Write parenting columns for hours, snacking constantly. Wednesday: Stay up late online cancelling your automatic payments to the gym because the last time you went, the beautiful twentysomethings with tight skin and no kids made you feel gross, so now you despise all exercise.

Thursday 8.30pm: Thursday night beers with the boys to commiserate about how exhausting it is being a parent. Scoff chips because you don’t smoke any more but you have to have something in your hand to accompany the beer.

Friday 6pm: Collapse on the couch with a bucket of KFC and forget about work. Slurp KFC potato & gravy. Later, drive somewhere to watch the rugby. Drink bourbon with sweet, sugary cola. Get Burger King on the drive home to sober up.
