19 Be in to win
With the new season of autumn in motion, it’s time to reflect on the month that’s been and be present with what you are creating in this new month. For many people, March was dynamic in the sense of change. The theme of assisting people through transitions was strong recently. From relocating to a new country, city, home, employment, and lots of change in relationships! This can be incredibly uncomfortable and once we practise being in allowance, letting go of resistance, we can experience a great sense of ease. Here are two tips to help you be more committed to you starting this month: Is this overwhelm or overload? Ask this question when you start to ‘feel’ overwhelm. Most of the time, a great deal of overwhelm is actually an awareness that you are experiencing overload. Over committed appointments, intense screen time, sensory overload, being around people all the time — these can all create a sense of being overloaded. Not just with tasks, sometimes just the energy of lots of people can fill our personal space with noise. Take one hour a day and one day a week for you. It sounds like a big ask with so many distractions in the way but I can guarantee this tool is a game changer! An hour a day for you to be still, or move, or play i.e. creative arts, exercise, meditation. This will be a major contribution to you having and being more of you! Also, be aware of obligation – you have choice – you always have choice! I wish you all a happy month and be assured, when you start to commit to you and your life, everything else will align in your favour! Safe Easter to you and yours.

Book helps mums grab the moment
by PHILIPPA MANNAGH
S
hort and punchy. The type of book I love as a busy parent! Simply Parenting is handy, often reminding the reader of the obvious which, as a busy sleep-deprived parent, we can so easily forget through the fog. It made perfect sense and I found myself nodding in agreement while I read through the themed chapters — a book I wish was available when my first born arrived. The author, Anna Williams works for a home-based parent education programme, Back to Basics Parenting Support, but she has also worked for many years as a Karitane baby nurse and infant massage instructor. She writes with extensive experience on each topic, a mother herself and now a very proud grandmother. Anna’s motivation behind the book was a collection of articles she had previously published for SAVVY magazine to help out new parents. When a friend suggested she compile the stories into a book, Anna started down the road of self publishing. With the help of her daughter-inlaw, an order was made that sold out in two weeks. Now a second order is in hot demand and are also flying out the door. Anna believes one of the most important things a new parent needs to hear is a lot of reassurance that they are doing okay. “Someone to come along and say, you are doing a fantastic job!” she says. Anna helps families by offering options, not telling parents what to do but suggesting other ways that they may not have thought of. Parents need to believe in themselves and first time parents need to be nurtured and looked after, is Anna’s heartfelt findings. Over the years she has noticed the biggest obstacles a new parent faces relates to sleep and feeding, settling off to sleep being the biggest headache for
new mums with 90 per cent of questions on this topic. Feed times can often be chaotic and often expectations unrealistic. The main point of the book is to encourage parents to enjoy their babies, that they grow up far too fast in this busy world. If there was one thing Anna wishes she had done differently herself as a mum of little ones was leaving everything and sitting down to play more often. Make the time she says, even 10 focused minutes to build that lego house and leave the dinner a tad longer. Try to set time everyday — an important reminder! I found this book informative as it successfully answered all the niggly questions that I often pondered but never ended up asking. This book is a quick read and straight to the point, Simply Parenting offers gentle refreshers and new ideas that can make life easier to a sleep deprived mum and the all important encouraging support for when you doubt yourself, as we all do. Anna is happy to answer questions, supply parenting information and can also do inhome support (booking ahead is usually required) Phone: 0220332401 or email anna@parentingsupport.co.nz Simply Parenting books can be sourced from the local library or purchased from Baby on the Move on Bank Street for $19.95. Perfect for a gift basket to a new mum — grab the moments when they are there!

Northland beauty has eye on New Zealand crown Kenessie Grieve has learned a lot about herself over the passed few months. LEIGH BRAMWELL finds out what has made her rethink her future.
“I decided I could do a sort of cheesy burlesque and tone it down a little,” she says. Miss World New Zealand is a nonprofit event that raises money for a charity every year and this year's pageant aims to raise $40,000 for Oaklynn Special School in Auckland. The girl who contributes the most time and money will win the "Beauty With A Cause" category. “Getting to know the kids at the special school is great,” Kenessie says. “I met my class a couple of weeks ago and there was one little girl there who couldn’t speak at all. But that didn’t stop us because we managed to communicate without words.” The experience has encouraged Kenessie to rethink her future and is now thinking about how she could work with special needs children. Currently working as a retail assistant manager, she points out that she hasn’t really studied towards a career yet because she hasn’t had a firm idea of what she would like to do in the longer term. “I did want to do modelling but now I’m looking at primary school teaching,” she says. But on April 25 at the Rendezvous Hotel in Auckland, everything may change and Kenessie’s next step may be as New Zealand’s representative at the Miss World pageant.
O
ver the next couple of weeks Kenessie Grieve will be making a serious effort to eliminate the word ‘like’ from her conversation. “I’m practicing not to, like, say it in every sentence,” the Whangarei 20 year old laughs. Her motivation is the upcoming Miss World New Zealand event on April 25 in which she is competing for the title. She’ll be required to answer a question without any knowledge of the content, and she’s determined to do well. It’s been quite a journey for Kenessie, who describes herself as having been quite a shy person who stayed at home and didn’t socialise much. But on the flipside of that coin, she’s always had a passion for being in front of the camera and nurtured an ambition to be a model. Her boyfriend talked her into auditioning for the contest and now she’s one of the finalists. “At that first audition I was scared to go through the door,” she says. “I always compare myself to other girls and I don’t have much confidence. But I did it because I wanted to find myself and find out who I was.” Quite a few things have changed since Kenessie took that first step. “I’ve developed a lot,” she says. “The other girls are really supportive so I’ve made 20 new friends. But I still need to improve my confidence, because you get a lot further in life if you have it.” A retail assistant manager at the Clearance Shed near Okara Park, she has been driving down to Auckland every weekend for pageant

workshops on a range of topics — including catwalking, hair and makeup, and performance and presentation. On the final evening, the contestants are judged on evening
gown, talent and national costume. The talent piece is optional and Kenessie had thought she wouldn’t do it but then decided she could show off her talent as a burlesque dancer — she dances with the Northern Dolls.

Style as season leaves us Add brighter shades to your autumnal wardrobe and enlist some help in choosing clothes that will lift your spirits every day
A
UTUMN IS upon us and, with daylight saving also ended, indicates the start of cooler, darker mornings and evenings. This indication also signals to our brain that we are going to need to have clothing handy that can be layered on and off as the temperatures change throughout each day. There could be wardrobe confusion happening in the mornings as you head out the door if you don’t set aside time to organise your transitional autumn wardrobe. It’s a season for being more diverse in what you wear, so there needs to be a bit of planning involved. Easy to say, but not so easy to do. What you wear definitely depends upon your lifestyle and, more so, your environment, because some of us feel the cold more than others. Working in an air-conditioned office, for example, you may be used to temperature changes but, for others, what you wear is more about the weather’s changes. You’re hot one minute and cold the next, then battling the wind or rain. It’s time to start changing over your wardrobe and drawers in preparation. A little bit of sorting out now will save a huge job later when you are stressed about what you can wear on that sudden, out of the blue, cold, wet day. Weed out very light summer garments and footwear. Pack them away in a suitcase or another wardrobe so you can have easy access to them if
‘‘
A little sorting now will save a huge job later . . you’re planning a cruise or Pacific island holiday. You will now see what garments you have left to play around with for autumn. Add in your midweight jackets and cardigans, tops, pants, leggings. Bring camis and pantyhose back to the fore. Sandals and jandals away, boots and shoes within easy reach. There may be a few items that haven’t seen the light of day for a few years. Do they even fit you anymore? Try things on as you go. It might be appropriate to add a few items of colour if all you seeing hanging there is black, black and more black. There are some exciting colours in the stores this autumn, such as tan, blush pink, blue and red, so set aside some time to see what colours and styles you like and have some fun trying them on. Doing this will give your wardrobe and your mood such a lift. Why not take some of your own garments with you to the stores to match up with some new season pieces that will refresh your wardrobe with new shape,

style and colour. Take a serious look at how you are dressing. Are you still stuck back in 2007? If you are the time has come to update a little and get a better groove on. You don’t have to be the latest fashion plate; you just have to weed out those old pieces that really are the wrong shape, colour and style. Come on, girls, it’s 2015. Investing a few hours with an image consultant will far outweigh the expensive mistakes you have made in the past — those wrong decisions in purchasing garments that didn’t suit you, or the colour that washed you out and everyone wondered if you were sick that day. Let’s step out confidently from now on. — Annie Aspinall, image consultant

ou should be excited winter is coming, as the 2015 collections this season are simply amazing. One of these labels is Uldahl (pronounced Older), it has arrived for the first time in New Zealand direct from Denmark, a leading Danish manufacturer of women’s clothing. Uldahl is characterised by Nordic purity, natures own colours and surprising detailing. The perfect balance of contrasts, the simple and the raw, with sophisticated details,
and feminine expression, this is a must have label to add a point of difference to your wardrobe this Autumn. Brick & mortar retail v online shopping A
‘
s the information age gains momentum our world is changing at a speed faster than ever before and leading this change is the digital revolution. No longer are we constrained by four walls and immobile technology. Our office can now be carried in our back pocket, airline bookings can be sorted at the traffic lights and ‘selfies’ can be shared worldwide in an instant. We now live in a world that is continuous and connected, and as we increasingly engage digitally, globally, 24 hours a day, we are alarmingly less dependent on brick and mortar retail experiences … or are we? What better time to shop than relaxing with a green tea after the kids are in bed? An uninterrupted, global retail experience restricted only by the

Yes media hype would have us believe that digital retail is where it’s all happening now, that high technology has all the answers; but beyond the headlines, research is showing that physical stores, good old brick and mortar retail outlets are very much alive and kicking. The New York based Newswire Shopping Sentiment Survey shows that 77 per cent of all consumers regard physical shopping as being the safest and 69 per cent regard them as the most reliable way to shop compared to 22 per cent of online consumers and 7 per cent mobile. A recent magazine survey concluded a large percentage of women are unhappy with some part of their physical appearance – how can this be emulated on line? Perhaps the increased number of alteration businesses that have popped up is an indication of the failures of online purchases. Physical stores are clearly customer’s preferred shopping channel, providing a compelling
experience that they can’t find on the website. Women’s retail is a prime example of this. Customers want the whole shopping experience — they want to try on or touch merchandise, they want to know that it fits, looks fabulous and feels comfortable. They want the one stop shop where the whole ensemble mixes and matches, and they want in store expert advice to achieve this, along with the banter, washed down with the odd glass of wine. But as brick and mortar retailers we do have to get Savvy, it’s not about turning the lights on and having just enough staff to ring up sales and stop shoplifters walking off with merchandise. We have to evolve. We need to embrace a new era of
retail — the omni-chanel retail strategy, where mobile, online and in store experiences complement rather than compete with one another. Take a look at Amazon opening a physical store front in the middle of New York City – the first of its kind after 20 years as the on-line retailing giant!!! The integration of online and mobile channels should now be regarded as an enhancement to our great brick and mortar stores, not a detraction. Today’s consumer wants to shop when, where and how they want. We just need to make ourselves available for that or get out our sewing machines and start up an alteration service. Consider the following — a great new sweater, a jacket, a new shape skirt, a slim or full legged pant (nothing in between), a long cardie, and a special dress for evening.
L
oobie’s Story is designed by Laurinda Sutcliffe, and her theme for winter is California Dreaming – “all the leaves are brown, and the sky is grey, I went for a walk, on a winter’s day.” She gained inspiration for this range from travels in California. The windswept landscape that inspired the collection and it’s tonal palette is also perfectly in line with the mood of the Loobie’s Story woman that Laurinda had in mind when designing California Dreaming:
“free spirited and relaxed, yet a great lover of luxury.” Essential items are silk print blouses and shift dresses in shades of pale pink, indigo and melon. The hero piece in the range is the pale blue leather jacket.

FINDING YOUR BEAUTIFUL
with SARAHLEE COBB
We all share the desire to be ‘beautiful’ A
s people, we want to feel comfortable in our skin, as women we want to feel beautiful. That illusive, euphoric feeling of walking on air, where everyone is admiring you, stopping to say hello and every comment is flattering. Beauty is a strange thing; it means different things to different people, but we all share that desire to have it and hold onto it. Last week I saw one of the popular videos that have been floating around the internet lately showcasing the “ideal body type throughout history”. It covers the female form from ancient Egypt until today. As I sat there watching our ideals of beauty change through the eras I wondered to myself, “why is the ‘social ideal’ so important that we often limit our happiness by it?” Disregard social norms (because normal is average and you are so much more than average). Disregard what those around you say,
if they have nothing nice to say stop listening. Wear rose-tinted glasses, you don’t have to love yourself, just stop hating, you are good enough now. I want you to know that it is the crazy little things that make you truly unique. Every scar is proof that you are stronger than whatever tried to hurt you. Every grey hair is a moment shared with family and friends. Every outfit is a reflection of the character you are today. Your extraordinary laugh, that makes the whole room giggle — these quirks are yours and yours alone. As a portrait photographer it is my passion to make women feel amazing, to spark every persons hidden personality and show them their own ‘beautiful’. Your beauty is unique to you and no one before or after will ever be the same type of ‘beautiful’ as you, so please hear me, “you are beautiful now”. Know that is intangible, it’s the sparkle in the smile,
the swagger in a walk, the fluttering of eyes at someone special. It’s the secret connection you have with the world: your experiences, your emotions your thoughts. You are greater than your physical appearance: it’s everything you have ever achieved, everything you have seen and everything you want to be. Don’t look back and wish you’d appreciated what you had then, how good you looked or how pretty you really were. You can’t change how you felt in the past but you can change how you feel about yourself now, you have the opportunity for your future self to know you have “found your beautiful” here and now.

Freeze your stubborn fat away I ntroducing ChillSculpt™, Caci’s new non-surgical fat reduction treatment which freezes and reduces fat cells. It’s ideal for those who have stubborn pockets of body fat that cannot be easily reduced by diet or exercise particularly around the back, lower abdomen, hips, waist and thighs. We sat down with Trudy who has recently completed a series of treatments. Trudy (44,) is a working mum and after her first child gained a bit of weight - like most of us do! It was after her 40th birthday, when she was looking through the party photos and thought, is that really me? She decided it was time to make a change and get her body back to how she remembered it. Trudy began exercising at least 4 times a week, and changed her diet, nothing too crazy, just sensible healthy choices. It was a lifestyle change, not a fad. A year on, and Trudy was in great shape, she had shed a few kilos, and her body shape had changed, but there was still a few areas that wouldn’t budge, no matter how many squats, or crunches she did, those little fat budges were still there. They were an issue for Trudy; “I really had a problem with my thighs, I’ve always hated my saddlebags, and I always joked that if I won the lottery, I would get liposuction,” she admits. Although Trudy had
considered liposuction, after actually researching the procedure, it was certain no; “the recovery time was too great, especially with a young child, there’s no way I could be off work for that long, and to be honest, the surgery itself looked too invasive, I was scared to do it and it wasn’t for me”. Trudy’s friend suggested she look into cryolipolysis technology which is often considered a non-surgical alternative to liposuction. Cryolipolysis uses controlled cooling to cool specific areas of fat below body temperature, crystallizing the fat cells without causing damage to the overlying
skin. The fatty tissue (subcutaneous fat) are naturally more vulnerable to the cold, and as a result of the treatment, the treated fat cells die, and are naturally eliminated through the body’s normal metabolic process. After a few months and multiple treatments, there is a reduction of the fatty tissue layer. With over 1 million Cryolipolysis procedures worldwide, it is proven to be a safe and effective treatment for non-surgical fat reduction. After researching the treatment, Trudy decided this was the best treatment for her; “there is no downtime, minimal recovery time, and the treatment
only takes 45minutes. It’s faster, and more affordable than liposuction, and I can pop in during a lunch break at work and no one would even know”. She signed up the Caci’s ChillSculpt™ programme that uses cryolipolysis technology to target stubborn fat areas. Trudy signed up and has now completed a 6 month ChillSculpt™ programme at Caci targeting her saddle bags and has is very happy with the results. “I’ve noticed a huge difference in the way my clothes fit, I went from a size 12 dress size to a size 10”. Trudy has had a 1cm reduction around her thighs, which equates to a full
pant size loss. “I went to put on my favourite black pants, and they just slid right off me, if was fantastic!” The cost of a ChillSculpt™ programme varies depending on the treatment area and number of treatments required, a six month Caci ChillSculpt™ programme starts from around $1600. Caci offers easy payment plans, so clients can pay for their treatments in instalments. They also offer Q Card. ■ If you are interested in finding out more book a complimentary consultation with a Caci Treatment Coordinator 0800 588 566 or visit caci.co.nz

Help at hand for common problem misinformation in the health and diet world, and we still tend to reach for sugarfree and fat-free items thinking that we are doing the right thing. Unfortunately we can end up, unknowingly, swapping healthy nutrients for chemical additives. You may also benefit from using an organic lubricant to help with sexual intercourse. Most store-bought lubricants are based on petro-chemicals, which means that they contribute to the issue, further drying out the vaginal tissues. There are two natural choices, both of which I can recommend: FlowMotion is a a terrific certified organic personal lubricant made of a delicate blend of certified organic plants and purified New Zealand water. Maxine shaves for a cure Emotions ran high as preparations were made for the Shave for a Cure event held at Stand Children’s Services last month. The Northtec hairdressers arrived armed with clippers and capes. Children excitedly found their spot on the mat to watch their role models take a stand and family and friends of the 10 staff members plus Maxine Connop, watched anxiously as the time grew near. Maxine had warned her family shortly before her wedding day, that when this event came around she was going to participate. “She gave us plenty of warning to get used to the idea,” said her mother on the day. Previous years, Maxine has had a large part to play in organising the Relay for Life events. Cancer is a subject she feels very passionate about after loosing loved ones to the disease and knowing friends of
friends who have also fought it. The young lady who is well known to the Onerahi Community sat ready, waiting, with tears forming in her eyes. The buzzers exploded with noise and it was all on… or off! Once the first cut had been made there were obvious sighs of relief, all agreeing that the worst part was over, it was the unknown. “I’m fine now it’s started, the lead up was the worse.” Maxine said. “And I didn’t expect there to be so many people!” Her husband accepted the honour of shaving his wife’s head and an emotional moment was shared when it was all over. “I am very proud of her,” Nicolas said, “she was very anxious about it.” Maxine successfully raised over $1700 as well as bringing together a workplace community for an extremely worthy cause. _ Philippa Mannagh

I am 63 years old and sexual intercourse has now become so painful that I find myself making excuses to my lovely, patient husband in order to avoid it. I have already been through the menopause and I’m not on HRT. Please can you recommend anything natural that can help me, as I am feeling quite distressed that this may be the end of our physical life together. — A. I know it doesn’t help but this is quite a common problem and one that many women your age have to deal with. It’s certainly nothing to feel ashamed of. The pain and discomfort you are experiencing is almost certainly due to vaginal dryness as a symptom of ongoing menopausal changes. We all know that sex requires lubrication and it’s important to have enough to avoid sensitive mucous membranes being damaged. If you can’t produce your own, for whatever reason, then we must look to substitiute it with the most natural means available. If there is not enough lubrication it can make the sexual experience less enjoyable and painful. It can also lead to irritation and, potentially, infection. One of the most simple treatments for your symptoms is to purchase natural vitamin E capsules and insert them directly into the vagina, where the capsule will rapidly dissolve and work to lubricate the internal membranes and reduce local inflammation. Use one capsule daily, preferably each night before bed. Essential fatty acids are also useful when taken regularly as part of your diet — so make sure that you increase your intake of healthy fats through eating plenty of nuts, seeds, fatty fruits, and adding oils to your salads. Taking Flax seed oil can also help considerably. Low-fat diets are often a precursor to dryness — whether it be the mouth, the skin, eyes, or internal membranes. Try to eat plenty of whole foods, and avoid anything which is labelled as ‘diet’ or ‘low fat’. Unfortunately, there has been a lot of

ention the name ‘Mangonui’ and most people in Northland will immediately think ‘fish and chips’. The iconic fish and chip shop is a popular stop for locals and tourists alike, but it’s certainly not all the little harbourisde town has to offer. There are cafes, galleries, craft shops and historic buildings, and one of those buildings is Penney Cottage. Just up the hill from the famous eatery, the little 1860s colonial gem is a standout with its buttery paintwork and orange trim, pitched roof, old fashioned verandah and splendid views over picturesque Mill Bay. Certainly Gerry and the late Cammy McGillicuddy were captivated by it when they first began visiting Mangonui over than 30 years ago. It hadn’t been their intention to move there, but after helping three lots of friends relocate to the area, they began to think it might be a good place to live. “We were driving around and saw it and Cammy said ‘that’s the one I want’,” Gerry recalls. “It wasn’t even for sale at the time but we knocked on the door, found out the owner was away crayfishing, met him later in the pub and shook hands on it.”
The township of Mangonui has retained its old world charm. They returned to Auckland, put their own house on the market on the Friday, sold it on the Monday. Obviously, it was meant to be, and they were back in Mangonui within a week. In those days the old
cottage had an outside toilet and bathroom, and was in desperate need of repairs. “The first night I got up to go outside to the loo I fell through the floor in the kitchen,” Gerry

laughs. They were given an old farmhouse in the area to demolish, and for $300 managed to get all the salvaged timber and hardware back home. They stripped all the paint from the ceilings to reveal beautiful timber boards, and began redecorating the house with new wallpapers, light fittings, rugs and colonial furniture. While the redecoration went on, Gerry re-piled, re-floored, reroofed, re-plumbed and opened up the large basement, all with a nod to the original features of the building. Now the cottage has two bedrooms, a sitting room, a formal living room, a farmstyle kitchen and dining room, inside bathroom and toilet, and the basement workspace. When his father-in-law came to live there, Gerry bought another old building and moved it on to the site. It was originally an old railway cottage which sat alongside the line between Whangarei and Dargaville. Gerry gave it a pitched roof and a paint job to match the main house, and these days it’s a charming guest cottage with kitchen, sitting area, bedroom and bathroom. It shares the lovely garden with its stream and little stand of native bush, and the tranquil views of the harbour at Mill Bay, and Doubtless Bay in the distance. Gerry’s plan now is to move on, and says the flexible spaces within the two buildings make it ideal for either family living, or as holiday accommodation. It would be fair to say that Mangonui has changed a good deal over the 30 years Gerry has lived there. Nowadays there’s a focus on stylish cafes and

JUST FOR KIDS
Te Papa features in New Zealand-themed reads
T
hese three books are all well-constructed to endure any rough treatment from children and have a clean layout with clear, easy-to-read text. Each of these books uses art and objects from Te Papa, which also makes this series a great New Zealand-themed gift for friends and family overseas. My children really enjoyed this series and the books encourage reader engagement by asking questions about the topic on each page. As a bonus these books also have a section at the back that details the items that were displayed on each page and a page with a te reo Maori pronunciation guide. The books cost $19.99 each.
My New Zealand ABC Book This is a great New Zealandthemed ABC book, each page (or spread) in the book covers a letter of the alphabet and asks a question or has a fun comment on each topic and uses a
My New Zealand Colours Book Of the three books this one is the firm family favourite and has been read very many times. The format is similar to the first two with questions or fun comments on each topic, each colour being accompanied by its te reo and English names. Again this book uses a colourful and easy-to-read format and uses standout, uncluttered images. At the back of the book is a helpful guide to correctly pronouncing the te reo words in the book.

The Birthday Monster by Bridget Sherlock Illustrations by Izzy Ivy Beat Books, $24.99 ................................... Birthday boy Peter wakes
up and decides today is going to be all about him. He snatches his brother’s breakfast and gobbles it up, then tears his sister’s book — he’s enjoying roaring and snarling, snatching and stomping. But Mum sends him to his bedroom where he discovers he has turned into a monster. How is he going to change back to Peter the birthday boy? Being a monster isn’t as much fun as he thought. An easy to read, bright and energetic book that could well teach a lesson or two.

A Summery Saturday Morning by Margaret Mahy $15.99, Picture Puffin ........................................ This Margaret Mahy classic has been republished as a board book, perfect for little hands to hold and turn the pages. A group of children ... and two dogs ... go down to the sea on a summery Saturday morning. The go down the wiggly track, scattering
shells and leaping logs. The dogs cause a bit of trouble chasing a cat, a boy on a rattly bike — and then wild geese chase them. In sing-song rhyme Mahy's story, along with bright and cheery illustrations by Selina Young, will delight readers, young and old. _ Colleen Thorpe
Alice-Miranda at the Palace by Jacqueline Harvey Random House, $19.99 ........................................ Alice-Miranda Highton-SmithKennington-Jones attends boarding school at Winchesterfield-Downsfordvale Academy for Proper Young Ladies. And if there’s an adventure to be had or a mystery to be solved you can guarantee Alice-Miranda won’t be far away. In this, the 11th book based on Alice-Miranda and her family and friends, they have all been invited to Queen Georgiana’s silver jubilee.
Queen Georgiana, or Aunty Gee to the Highton-SmithKennington-Jones family, lives at the magnificent Evesbury Palace . . . and what better place for adventure and mystery. The staff are behaving strangely; Edgar and Louis, Aunty Gee’s grandsons, are not welcome to Alice-Miranda and her friend, Millie, and when an unexpected visitor arrives things go from bad to worse. With the help of her friends and, of course, a trusty butler, Alice-Miranda sets out to uncover what threatens to bring down the royal family. A real mystery, the likes of which Enid Blyton’s Famous Five would like to get their teeth into. For girls 8 years and over. _ Colleen Thorpe
Max’s Wagon, Max’s Bear, Max’s Bath All three written by Barbro Lindgren and illustrated by Eva Eriksson Gecko Press $14.99 each ........................................ These board books are gorgeous. Simple words, cute photos, perfect for toddlers. All three books feature Max’s bear and his dog. The stories are funny with a few dilemmas to make reading more interesting. Little hands will find the sturdy pages easy to hold and near impossible to rip.

Where is Pim? by Lena and Olaf Landstrom Gecko Press, $19.99 ........................................
colourful and easy-to-read format encouraging engagement in the book.
My New Zealand 123 Book This covers numbers very well with a big number on each spread with the te reo and English words below. As with the ABC Book it has a fun comment on each topic. But my children struggled a little at the end of this book with the sudden jump from number 12 to 100, then 1000 followed by 1,000,000.
Pom and Pim are back in this delightfully simple story for toddlers. Pom is playing with Pim until he suddenly disappears. Pom and the dog go looking for Pim but all they manage to find is a discarded can and an old sock. Where is Pim? Children will love this easy-tofollow adventure. Ages 1-plus.

familiar with string games, check out a string game website.
FIND THE CAR Challenge your kids to find a list of different types and models of cars. Children interested in cars will find this game enjoyable. Make it more challenging by specifying a colour for more common models.
TOP TIPS
MAP MONITORS Give each child a map of your trip and allow them to keep track of your progress using stickers, or colouring in.
I
f you’re planning a road trip these school holidays and the thought of bored and restless children is already invading your thoughts, devise a plan to make the trip fun and arrive at your destination in good spirits. Apart from the normal snacks, pillows and treats, the question most parents spend very little time on is ‘How to keep the kids entertained on the road’.
TRAVEL SCAVENGER HUNT Compile a list of objects for each child to find along the road like “brown cow”, “tunnel”, “horse float” etc. Anything you might be passing will work. The winner is the first one to find everything on the list. You can also make Bingo Cards before you leave listing the objects to mark off on your journey.
A TREASURE BOTTLE Use a two litre bottle or large plastic container with a lid. Fill it two thirds full with rice, add small “treasures” like paper clips, bolts, pennies, Lego or other small items you might have lying around home. Record the number of items you put in and write the number on the outside of the bottle. The ‘treasure hunters’ roll the bottle around until they find everything hidden inside. Ensure the lid is secure. When all the items are found give them a small treat.
MEMORY GAME Choose a category like “groceries”, and then one person starts with naming something that can be bought at the grocery store that starts with the letter ‘A’, such as “apples”. The next player would have to repeat the first person’s answer as well as add on a food that begins with the letter ‘B’. If you mess up,
FORTUNATELYUNFORTUNATELY Help your children learn to think positively with the game Fortunately-Unfortunately. One player begins with an unfortunate statement like, “Unfortunately, the car has a flat tyre”. The next player has to counter with something more fortunate like, “Fortunately, we found a garage to have it fixed.” Players continue to alternate between unfortunate and fortunate things until you’ve exhausted a particular topic.
Keep the kids amused on holiday road trips you’re out, and the game continues until only one memory-gifted player remains. Once that category is over, move on to a more challenging one like movies, animals or place names.
CARD GAMES Never underestimate the power of card games to keep your kids entertained. Bring along a set of cards from home and challenge kids to play their old favourites such as snap, go fish, and rummy – but don’t let noise levels distract the driver.
FAMILY SPELLING BEE Have an in-car Spelling Bee. Choose words appropriate for all age levels, so no one gets discouraged. Other family challenges such as trivia or singing competitions can work well.
20 QUESTIONS This is a great game for inquisitive little ones. The game begins with one person choosing pretty much any item they can think of. The first question for
WHO AM I? Think of someone you and your children know: a family member, neighbour, or friend. Give clues to the person’s identity like their hair colour, gender, or whether or not they wear glasses. Let each person guess and if no one gets it, continue giving clues until their answer is correct.
the guessers is usually “animal, vegetable, or mineral?” although it doesn’t have to be. Players then go through a litany of questions trying to determine the nature of the mystery object. Answers can only be ‘yes’ or ‘no’. The winner is whoever guesses the object the quickest, or who can stump the other players with their object.
THE GEOGRAPHY GAME Help your kids refresh their geography lessons while on the road with the geography game. The game begins with a person naming any place in the world, Paris for example. The next person then has to come up with a place name that begins with the last letter of the first location. The next place would start with an ‘S’ such as Sydney. The game continues on until someone gets stumped. No place can be used more than once. With a little creativity and planning, you can keep young ones entertained on even the longest journey. On-the-road entertainment can generate opportunities to learn, and create memories to last a lifetime.
FAMILY STORYTELLING Inspire your family’s creative side by narrating a group story. Someone begins by creating one line to a story eg “There once was a prince under a curse…” and each person must add one line to the story. Mix it up by requiring the lines to rhyme, or by pointing at players randomly to come up with a line on the spot.
ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS This classic game makes it easy to keep kids occupied. Players put their hands behind
their backs and pull one out to reveal either rock (closed fist), paper (flat hand) or scissors (first and middle fingers in a “v”)
STRING FIGURES A piece of string can keep a child busy for hours. Pack a fairly long piece of string tied into a circle for your child, and challenge them to learn to make string shapes like Jacob’s ladder, Kitty Whiskers or to play Cat’s Cradle. If you aren’t

Easter, bad time for chocoholic Wife, mother, journalist ... PHILIPPA MANNAGH reveals the highs and lows, and the challenges in life ...
T
he last two months I have been on a roll. The numbers are coming down on the scales (although I had been told to turn a blind eye to weigh ins and focus on how my clothes fit), the distance I could run was getting further and with this distance, the recovery time was decreasing and getting easier. I would jump out of bed to go and have this new found “me time” and put my hand up to any new idea to stimulate this new focus. Then I got sick. Easter came early. After a week of feeling sorry for myself and fighting off what was a horrible head cold, I had lost my fitness mojo. I ate, I drank, I spent the evening working late playing catch-up or on the couch watching telly and to be perfectly honest I enjoyed it … for a while. Although the numbers on the
dreaded scales stayed surprisingly similar, I could feel my tops digging in and my tummy widening again. So, how do you snap out of this mode when you are in it, enjoying it and even welcoming it? I believe in balance and moderation. I don’t live without treats and feel goods but there is always a line. It was like my body wanted to make up for two months of healthy eating and exercise by bingeing. Do three things my personal trainer told me, “Do a super big smile, strike a power pose, and do 10 squats.” Because of the mood I was in, at first I skimmed over these comments on my LITTLE MISS FIT Facebook page and giggled at how funny it sounded. This wouldn’t work, surely? Setting off on Thursday with my massive smile, I tried a new power pose at the Fit Mums class under the relaxing sheet of light blue skies. That moment.
The sun shone down on my back as a cool breeze crept past. Trees swayed calmly as I stood still, focused on my breathing and balance. Tucking my leg behind me, I found my power. This was my power pose. I found my inspiration right there on that field and something ignited in me once again. I can do this. Step back into your zone using whatever works for you. This was the first time I had even heard of a “power pose” and it’s something that I will be keeping up my sleeve for later down the track! Re-connect, breathe, sleep, eat well and jump back on the fitness wagon. It’s where I belong now, I discovered I was lost without it. I have been spending time lately talking to young people not only about money but also about the importance of having goals for their lives. Sadly when I ask them what their goal for the coming year is they haven’t got a clue. A Goal is something you act on; dreams are something you are just thinking about. A goal has a deadline; dreams are just that, dreams. Dreams are free; goals have a cost – time, money, effort and some sweat. Goals produce results. Goals require hard work; dreams just require your imagination. Goals increase your skills, your abilities and change you forever. — Time Management Ninja 2013 As parents we need to encourage our children, encourage them to dream but teach them how to then to turn those dreams in to actions. “Dreams can inspire you but goals can change your life”.
RECIPE Plum Sauce for Meatballs Make your own meatballs (which I prefer) or buy them premade from the
supermarket. Brown in the oven for about 10mins. Turning after 5mins. 2Tbsp Plum Jam 3/4 cup tomato sauce 2Tbsp vinegar 1/2 cup water 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 dsp Worchester sauce Blend all ingredients together in a saucepan and bring to the boil (you can thicken this mixture with 1tsp cornflour mixed with a bit of water) Take meatballs from oven and put into a casserole dish, top with the plum sauce and cook for about 3⁄4 hour or a little less if the meatballs are really small.
