elcome to April readers! I love this slight chill in the air and the sunny days that warrant a scarf and a light cardi. This month greets us with the Easter holidays as well as the conclusion of Term One at school already. I’m sure the years go faster, this right here is my motivation to focus on the simple things in life, aspiring to slow life down, prioritising and re-introducing the missing magic pieces that once surrounded our family life. For example, growing herbs on the kitchen ledge and planting a flower from time to time with a focus on keeping them alive! Autumn is a fabulous time to re-visit your goals and the plans you had set for 2017. This issue, we talk to a local lady committed to setting her sights on the Hollywood stage. We uncover the Autumn trends throughout our fashion pages to help you rock this new season and personally check out a local cafe that’s worthy of your next visit.

Hollywood Calling Taking Maori culture to the world stage!
BY PHILIPPA MANNAGH
S
ingers, musicians, dancers, actors and models are getting set to compete before 75 judges from the entertainment industry at the Annual World Championships of Performing Arts. Next year, Rachel will be on that stage too. This international meet is often cited as the official “Talent Olympics” for aspiring performers. When Rachel Diamond heard Hollywood whisper her name, she knew there was no other option but to give this opportunity her all. Currently preparing for next year’s trip to WCOPA, this talented local lady fills her days organising fundraising initiatives, practising, planning and channelling excitement into her goals set on Long Beach, California. This year is dedicated to preparing herself to be stage ready and going over with a big bang. Closely compared to the performing arts version of the sporting Olympics, this worldwide event attracts thousands of competitors striving for gold, silver or bronze. Rocking her New Zealand black stars uniform, Rachel will be taking part in the traditional parade alongside other countries and entering as many groups as she can while she is there including, variety and dance as well as three categories of singing including Maori culture. This is a highlight of the international meet, the spectacular Opening Ceremonies and WORLDSTARS Parade of Nation. Over 50 countries parade in beautiful costumes representing their nations. Along the parade route, stages are set-up for a variety of international entertainment. Adding to the fun, a WORLDSTARS Village - much like an “Olympic Village” where they can meet teams from around the world. “This nine-day competition puts artists out there and gets them known,” Rachel says humbly, “you’ve got to be in it to win it!” she states. Eighteen applicants have been selected from New Zealand where they will stay with the Australian team while attending. The event boasts $400,000 worth of scholarships allowing generous opportunities to further one’s career and invest in the training they need to advance. “I’m looking at taking some people from Whangarei over with me to the United States where there is a higher chance for producers to see us, an opportunity to meet them and labels up for grabs.” Participants only have one minute each on stage to wow the judges. Rachel sees this as an advantage as she gets to give it her all in a very short time frame and then puff off stage she laughs. Rachel is working on original music at present and harnessing her nerves into excitement. “Being nervous is the same feeling as being excited. Once I got that, I was just excited all the time!” “Performing in Chicago and Queens of the Rei, our local drag queen events have stopped my nerves these days as you have to pull out all that you have,” she laughs.
You can support Rachel at her upcoming fundraising event: April 8th, 2017 at Whangarei Theatre Company. A fundraising dinner and variety show to help Ms Rachel Diamond represent Whangarei / NZ at The World Competition of Performing Arts in Hollywood for June 2018. Phone: 0212377376

Juggling in High Heels, what is this book all about? It’s a book urging women to get their life working for them. To lead big happy lives, to take charge of their s#!t and get moving! It gives women permission to have the life that they want. I wrote ‘Juggling’ after spending 25 years listening to women grump about their lives. Women lives are incredibly busy - the modern woman is managing a lot but she is often exhausted, out of control and unhappy. Taking control of your life doing stuff that YOU want to, planning time to fit the good stuff in is vital to learning a big happy life. ‘Juggling in High Heels’ is about working out your roles, working out what you want and then making it all happen. It’s a tonic for women who feel overwhelmed by their lives.
We’ve nabbed you currently on tour… what feedback are you receiving from your audiences so far? The response has been brilliant! So many women are relieved that they have found a book that they can relate to, that they feel is real and understands where they are at. “Powerful, frank and funny” is how one reader explained it!
What are your hopes for the Whangarei event coming up? I had a brilliant time in Whangarei last October with my Decode Your Diva event at the Capitaine Bouganville Theatre. The Juggling tour is more relaxed, a night out at a local bar - a chance for women to be inspired, to learn a few juggling tips and to chat to me about the book. Taking time to go out, to meet up with friends and to be inspired is the point of all my events. We often feel like going out is too hard and it takes a bit of effort but a fun night out can be a great way to recharge and reset your thinking!

OUR PEOPLE
Lisa O’Neill, a goddess who is passionate about love, laughter & glitter! What do you see is the biggest fashion blunder that New Zealand women often make? The biggest problem with NZ women is that they don’t wear enough of what they love. They wear what they think they will look thin in or what is practical instead of wearing what really makes them feel good. I would love to see women being braver with clothes, to spending more time thinking about how they can feel amazing and less time on what other people will think. We are actually too practical - raised to choose clothes that we can wear for all occasions instead of buying things that light you up.
How are New Zealand women rocking this juggle you talk about? New Zealand women are so capable and hands on. We are great at getting on with it and doing everything. Our biggest problem is not putting ourselves first. We spend 95% of our lives in service to others and then wonder why we are fat, unhappy and resentful.
Keys to juggling life, business, men and heels? I love working, men and high heels! I think that women who work in an area that they are passionate about make the world a better place. They are excellent role models to their children and usually make happier mothers and partners. Men are simple creatures. We over complicate them and I don’t think we honour them enough. That said I think women need to demand that their men meet their needs. We all assume that men know what we want they actually don’t have a clue and are often delighted when we tell them! I think that the point of any partnership is to make the other person’s life better. So many couple are actively ruining each others days and lives!

Wearable fun, the trends without the extreme extremes KAREN MATICH, POLWARTH DESIGN
W
ell it’s another season and the fashion world has ensured we don’t have the ‘same as same as’ of last year. It’s all about extreme prints, textures, accentuated silhouettes and boobs. Yes the opaque braless look is evolving. 2017 designers are going all out baring all, with cleverly designed one armed sweaters, jackets or dresses that expose one breast in all its glory except for the designer nipple pasty. The ‘dress in the dark’ looks that we joked about a year ago are hitting the catwalks with gusto. Unbelievably jarring combinations that reek ‘mismatched’, are deemed acceptable and chic. Worse than florals and stripes, Europe is combining colours that belie monochromatic and accept ridiculous – the sequinned ball gown over a polo white t-shirt??? Sleeves are huge fashion statements again, exaggerated and elongated as if hooked on a nail, drooping far beyond the fingertips. Perfect for warding off winter chills, or dunking in your morning coffee, but defying any reasonable tactile dexterity. Leg-of-mutton sleeves take us back to the turn of the century, minutely buttoned to the elbow while the wide ruffled bell sleeve just drips from wrist. None are practical –try painting your nails with that lot. So what of our fashion trends for autumn 2017? Are we providing a fashion platform for you to meander the Whangarei streets in a fluoro rabbit fur pants suit with embellished ankle boots and a pink Matrix patent leather jacket?? No. Luckily for you, we’ve chosen a much safer practical route. Once the autumn 2017 fashion frenzy has calmed, what remains is the wearable fun, the trends without the extreme extremes. Knitwear is playing a major role for casual. Oversized sweaters, blanket draped coats, boiled woollen tunics all with voluptuous cowl, crew or V necklines and jazzed up with tassels, lace,
bold contrasting trims or stepped hemlines. Anything with an animal origin is huge. Possum or cashmere and merino blends work wonders for jumpers, ponchos and cardys. Real rabbit fur capes, jackets and vests add a ping to event wear but create just as big an impact tossed back with jeans as does the timeless leather jacket which reeks sophistication whatever way its worn. Skirts in knit can be skinny and short or long, teamed back with a tightly cinched blazer that emphasises the waistline. Belts are back – if you can find one, completing the ‘tucked in’ look we haven’t seen for years – suck it in ladies!! The ankle boot is still a dominant feature in the footwear world, complimenting any hemline and with the focus on neutral naturals, brown is the new black. In the high fashion world, it sometimes appears it’s a competition for the most ludicrous. Yes we’re encouraged to challenge our comfort zones, but I don’t know how comfortable I’d feel walking down Cameron Street next to someone in cut-out jeans exposing their left buttock!!
It’s time to embrace colour FASHION
BY STACEY SPEEDY
W
ith a hint of coolness in the air, Autumn has approached us and in the world of fashion one must be loving the textures, patterns and playfulness of this season’s styles. I am really enjoying still seeing colour and it would be great to keep this going in our wardrobes instead of falling into the ease of black again and again. I find it interesting, when looking through my 10 year old daughter’s wardrobe, I see very little black, I notice her Winter leather look jacket is a vibrant blue. Why is it we see so much colour on children? However, as we grow into adults, black becomes second nature. Sadly, often people wear black to hide their figures or even themselves. It’s true certain skin tones can easily wear black from head to toe and look stunning, however on others they could simply do better. Don’t get me wrong, I adore a stylish
black dress or a quality pair of black trousers, however I am always in search of other options. When selecting this season, try and opt for other colours to try on first. Give some thought to what you will be wearing with it. I love seeing a coloured jacket, I think it makes a real statement and quite often indicates the wearer is open and relaxed to new ideas. The same applies to boots. Try some other colours, blondes could definitely opt for one of this season’s many shades of brown. Grey is a winner especially for cooler coloured people and the word in the fashion world is …. navy is the new black! So, let’s embrace colour and if you need help in determining your colours, ensure you seek professional guidance from a qualified stylist. Worn correctly colour can lift you, enhance your inner beauty, complement you and leave you feeling as we are meant to… fabulous!

You can’t go wrong with metallic prints this Autumn. We’re talking about all-over sequins and bold, metallic statement fabrics – but we’re also talking subtle, feminine, accented patterns and foil prints that will make people look twice. Sequinned fabrics and glam fabrics such as velvet are perfectly on trend this Autumn, bringing a rich tapestry of textures and weights to the fashion scene. A little bling to make your clothing sing – that’s what it’s all about this season. And when you’re teaming your metallics with comfy/smart pants, the look works even better.

Metallics, metallics and MORE metallics
Boho and Western, a match made in heaven Boho – a look we all know and love, is gaining a new lease on life with it’s 2017 Western twist. We’re seeing a lot of fringing details this season, on ponchos, tops and jackets, and when teamed with the ever-popular checked shirt and boho boots, this look rocks! We’re loving the gypsy-boho feminine flowing tops teamed with distressed denim too – you really can’t go wrong with this one!
Shirts are back for Autumn 2017 Is there anything more stylish on a blustery Autumn day than an oversized shirt and your favourite pair of worn-in jeans? We’re so happy that shirts are back in style this year, they’re versatile, wearable, and so forgiving! Go for the longer-length styles to stay with the fashion trend, and look for checks, stripes, and prints. Pair with distressed jeans for the casual look, or dress up with smart pants for the country chic vibe. Have some fun with fashion this Autumn and get your glam on!!

Hair loss in women – The stress factor WITH CLIVE HAIR CLINICS
STRESSED ABOUT LOSING HAIR? CLIVE HAIR CLINICS CAN HELP THINNING HAIR? SUDDEN HAIR LOSS?
W
omen’s hair loss is on the rise with female clients now equalling male clients at Clive Hair Clinics. “Women are leading busier and more stressful lifestyles which are having a direct impact on their hair” says Rory Plumridge, Managing Director of Clive Hair Clinics. “Stress is one of the main reasons Female Pattern Thinning is becoming more common in younger women aged in their 20’s and 30’s” Plumridge says, “stress on the hair follicle essentially makes the cell think it is older than it is”. For a positive effect on hair growth try to reduce stress by balancing work and home life with moderate exercise and relaxation methods. How much is too much hair falling out? The simple act of washing your hair is when you are most likely to notice your hair falling out. On average you lose about 50–100 hairs a day, which is ok if the hair is growing back. To give you a rough idea, about 100 hairs a day of medium length hair would roll up to a golf sized ball of hair. It doesn’t matter how regularly you wash your hair as long as your total weekly loss is exactly the same. If you wash your hair 3 times a week, the total amount of hair you shed would be the same if you washed your hair just once a week. Excessive hair loss is the shedding of around 300 hairs in a 24 hour period, this is when you need to seek professional help. Sudden Hair Loss after giving birth? A higher level of Oestrogen during pregnancy prevents hair from shedding at its normal rate. This results in beautiful, fuller hair while pregnant but can increase the loss of hair after pregnancy. Rest assured the hair cycle will normalise once the excess hair is shed. However seek professional help if continual hair loss is experienced. If you are worried about hair loss phone 0800 40 42 47 or look online at www.cliveclinics.co.nz for more information.

Fractional CO2 laser: caci’s most advanced skin treatment CACI WHANGAREI TALKS TO SAVVY READERS
Fractional CO2 Laser is our ultimate skin correcting treatment for correcting tone and texture, plus reducing lines and wrinkles.
How Does Fractional Co2 Laser Work?
The laser works by penetrating the deeper layers of the skin, which triggers the skins natural healing process and stimulates collagen production. As a result, your skin rejuvenates and grows back stronger, firmer, smoother and more refreshed.
How Is It Different?
Unlike other lasers, the Fractional CO2 Laser penetrates the deeper layers of the skin. Heat and CO2 combined maximises the treatment, providing better, and more long lasting results
What Concerns Does It Treat? - Lines & wrinkles - Uneven skin tone - Advanced sun damage - Scarring
Does It Hurt?
It’s our priority to ensure you’re as comfortable as possible during all treatments. Small areas of the skin are treated at a time, therefore it is more comfortable than other laser treatments. Most clients are happy to have the treatment with a light topical anaesthetic.
What Downtime Is Involved?
INTRODUCING: FRACTIONAL CO2 LASER Our most advanced skin correcting treatment for improving: - Skin texture and tone
- Scarring
- Firmness
- Reducing fine lines and wrinkles
- Sun damage
- Pigmentation and age spots

As the treatment is done in small patches, you will notice afterwards that you have a pattern of evenly spaced dots in the treatment area. You’ll be given aftercare product to apply to protect and help the healing process. Following the treatment, you can expect some redness and slight swelling. This is normal and temporary. You will be given thorough instructions and information to take home, so you know what to expect. It’s very important to stay out of the sun in the days following your treatment, if you need to go outside, apply plenty of sunblock, and throw on some sunglasses and a hat.
How Many Treatments Do I Need?
For best results, we recommend a course of treatments. With Caci’s Reformaskin plan; appointments are scheduled for you over the course of a year, you will have 4 treatments, plus a combination of conditioning skin treatments. On a Caci treatment plan you can choose to pay using one of our interest free payment options. To find out more, book a free consultation at Caci Whangarei: 0800 458 458

Serie Expert Nutrifier: The new siliconefree range to restore shine to your tresses BROUGHT TO YOU BY XTREME SHAMPOO SHOPPE – WHERE GOOD HAIR DAYS BEGIN
W
e have all complained about it “I am fed up of my hair, it is as dry as straw.” The signs of dry hair include a raised hair cuticle, hair that lacks shine, feels rough and tangles easily. Hair can be dry for different reasons, from genetics to natural aggressions such as humidity, sun, and pollution. If left untreated, hair becomes more fragile and prone to breakage. L’Oréal Professionnel is used to listening to women in salons and so the brand decided to create ranges meeting the client’s expectations and according to the trends. Thus, if you have dry, dull hair and split ends, the new Serie Expert Nutrifier range is for you! Constructed with glycerol and coconut oil, the Nutrifier range offers just the right dose of nourishment to dry hair. Glycerol helps to hydrate and nourish, while coconut oil brings shine to the hair. It’s not an easy task to style hair that’s dry and
damaged, or overly shiny and heavy no thanks to an overdose of nutrients. But this hair care range doesn’t overload the hair fibers with a ton of elements that are unnecessary. Its silicone-free formula leaves a noncoated, lightweight sensation without compromising on nutrition as well. If you loved L’Oréal’s intense repair range, try out the new-generation line of nutritive hair care which offers a perfected formula for nourishing dry hair.
Vikki’s pick of the month Série Expert Nutrifier Blow Dry Cream A rich treatment that nourishes dry hair whilst protecting itt from heat temperatures of up to 230°c.

ep, sorry to ruin the show before it even got started, but the perfect time is a myth. If it doesn’t exist now then it’s highly unlikely to exist in the future either.
Because life happens. And life just is. And life doesn’t stop. It just keeps happening day after day, tomorrow after tomorrow, daytime after night time. How often do you hear yourself or someone else say ‘I’ll do that when such and such is over’ – or something else to that description? The desire to start something at the right time can be simply just a justification for delay. In most cases, the best time to start is now. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes life definitely does throw us whopping, ugly and unforeseen curveballs. And often those curveballs must become priority above all else – often for the sake of our or others health and longevity. But most of the events we stumble across and grizzle about are just that – the events of normal day to day life. And we need to learn to work with them and walk beside them. We need to learn that we can handle them AND attend to the next big goal or intention on our horizon. And we need to acknowledge that we are indeed in control of our destiny and not just a victim of our environment or life’s eventualities. It’s called acceptance of real life and it dares us to compromise upon, and negotiate with, all it throws our way. Putting off the big things in your life until there is a better, more perfect moment is a common trait for us. Yet, time does not get better because time doesn’t align itself for your goals. It happens whether you act or not. And we never get given more time so we must act while we have time. If you continue to wait for that elusive perfect moment, you will be disappointed when it never fronts, and, you don’t want to ever be in the position where your time simply runs out. It’s easy to come up with excuses and justify not getting started. It’s easy to put the idea away in a closet and wait for a rainy day. It’s easy to delay getting started because it’s hard work to take those difficult first steps. And that’s exactly why you should start taking them. Today. Every goal or intention we have presents opportunity; an opportunity to grab it with both hands, open the door and see where it leads, or an opportunity to quell the original emotion backing the goal and close the door before we’ve recognised it’s boundless potential. The longer we fill our heads with our own rationalisations and empty excuses, the less time we have to rock and roll. Successful people aren’t presented with the perfect time or the perfect life. They use the hand of cards they’re dealt, tackle the difficulties, negotiate the direction they need to take, but never ever let their eyes lose focus on the destination they long for. So let’s change our mindsets a little. Let’s stop longing for the perfect moment, and avoid grieving over tricky times, let’s seize all opportunities, big or small, and run with them. The people who realise how precious time is, and how much potential the now has – they are the ones who achieve success. Let’s all be one of those.
T
he conjunctiva is a transparent skin lining the inside of the eyelids and the white of the eye. It acts as a physical barrier, preventing foreign bodies going behind the eye, and produces mucus and part of the tears. It has many immune cells to fight off infection, which drain to the lymph nodes in front of the ear and these glands can be swollen when conjunctivitis occurs. Conjunctivitis is inflammation of this membrane, and causes the white of the eye and inside the lid appear red. This is commonly known as Red or Pink eye. This often affects both eyes. Most varieties of conjunctivitis are self-limiting but some progress to more serious eye problems. Most conjunctivitis can be diagnosed based on history and examination and fall into two groups, infectious and allergic. Infectious Most of the bugs which cause conjunctivitis are the same ones which cause colds and runny noses or sore throats. The bugs can pass up the duct from the nose, or get transferred to the eye after the patient blows their nose and then rubs their eyes. Viral conjunctivitis is the commonest, and usually produces a watery discharge and is highly contagious. Other signs can include • Follicles - prominent lumps inside the lids. • swollen eyelids. • tender glands in front of the ears. There is often a history of having had or been in contact with others with conjunctivitis or colds. This often goes
around in epidemics particularly through schools and kindergarten groups. Bacterial conjunctivitis usually has a thicker, yellowgreen eye discharge. As well as the discharge, other symptoms include crustiness on the lids or the eyes being stuck shut in the morning. Allergic conjunctivitis is a response to an allergycausing substance such as pollen. The body releases histamine which can cause symptoms such as • Itching. • Watery discharge. • Swollen eyelids. • Chemosis- a translucent swelling which may protrude the lids and look like a clear blister on the eye. • Papillae- red lumps under the top lid. • Mild to severe redness of the eye. Patients often have a history of allergies and they can have an acute conjunctivitis brought on by rubbing the eye with an allergen such as animal hair. This is a very sudden onset with a lot of swelling of the eye and eyelids but is self-limiting after a few hours and can be treated with an oral antihistamine tablet, but more importantly identifying what has brought it on and avoidance of the allergen. Allergic conjunctivitis can also be a more chronic problem often associated with hay fever and this can be treated with preventive anti-allergy drops such as Patanol which are good at preventing allergy but are not effective when the eyes are red. If the eyes are red then a short course of steroid eyedrops from a specialist can settle them down and then you can use the preventive drops. Often this a seasonal problem and you can use the drops only in the hay fever season. Young children can get a particularly severe form of chronic allergy called vernal keratoconjunctivitis which causes a very nasty conjunctivitis with corneal problems needing steroid treatment from an eye consultant. Other causes of conjunctivitis include irritation from chemicals, contact lenses or foreign bodies in the eye.
What to do?
If you think you have conjunctivitis, see your doctor or pharmacist Avoid rubbing eyes or touching eyes with hands 1. Wash hands before and after applying antibiotic drops or touching eyes. 2. Clean eyelids prior to application of medicine. 3. Never touch the tip of the antibiotic tube directly on the

affected eye. 4. Use disposable tissues. 5. Use a new towel and washcloth every day. Do not share towel or cosmetics, Change pillowcases often. 6. Throw away any makeup used while infected. 7. Stay away from school or work while there is discharge from the eyes to avoid passing it on. 8. Use dark glasses if sensitive to light. Do not pad the eye. 9. Discontinue use of contact lenses until infection cleared. Discard disposable lenses.
Treatment
Swabbing the eye does provide the most accurate diagnosis but is not practical with all patients and often the condition is resolved before swab results are returned. Some studies have found more than 70% of cases of bacterial conjunctivitis resolve in 8 days, however treatment with antibacterial agents leads to a faster clinical and microbial cure. Antibiotic use did not affect the severity but reduced the duration of conjunctivitis • For bacterial conjunctivitis, antibiotic eye drops or ointment are used to treat the eye infection and it should clear within a few days. • Viral conjunctivitis does not respond to treatment with antibiotic eye drops or ointment. It is self-limiting and may take up to two to three weeks for the infection to clear. • Allergic conjunctivitis is treated with eye drops containing antihistamines, decongestants, mast cell stabilizers, steroids, or anti-inflammatory drops. It is best to avoid rubbing the eyes.

Easy steps to creating life-changing healthy habits that stick
H
ow to overcome resistance, take action, succeed every day, and make changes that last.
Habits are important as our life today is essentially the sum of those habits. How in shape or out of shape you are? How happy or unhappy you are? How successful or unsuccessful you are? All a result of your habits. Good habits serve to create routine, efficiency and order. Bad habits have the opposite effect and can lock us into negative or rigid patterns of behaviour. But what if you want to improve? What if you want to form new better habits? Yes, it’s HARD to form new good habits and many of us wonder how we can have the best of intentions to become better, and yet often see so little progress. After all, we know how to get in shape, we know how to eat healthy, and we know how to exercise, and yet we’re no closer than we were six months ago towards our goals. What’s going on here? Well, mostly we tend to bite off more than we can chew, go too hard too soon, and then get overwhelmed too quickly. Does this sound familiar? • I’m going to eat 100% perfect AND • I’m going to walk 5 miles a day AND
• I’m going to workout at the gym three times a week. Unfortunately if you are somebody that eats a typically poor diet, never walks far, and hasn’t set foot in a gym for years (if ever), doing all of these things at once is almost a surefire way to succeed at precisely NONE of them. This is what happens: after an exciting week where things go perfectly, you realize you don’t have time to walk five miles a day or eat perfectly…and if you don’t have time to do those things, then what’s the point right? It’s already a failure and a lost cause! Square one. Welcome back! So how CAN we make it happen? Here’s the big secret: Good Habits: Dream Big, But Start Small Pick ONE habit, make it absolutely tiny, and focus on that habit for a period of 21 days to a month. Want to start exercising? Awesome. For that first week, aim for just five minutes per day. Just five minutes! Want to start cooking your own meals? Don’t try to cook ALL of your own meals yet. Just aim for one meal per day or one meal per week. Keep your goals SMALL and simple. The smaller and simpler they are, the more impossible it is to say no and the more likely you are to keep them. So, instead of thinking of your life goals, as big, audacious
BY CAROLYN HANSEN things that you can only achieve when the time is right or when you have better resources… but instead as tiny, daily behaviors that are repeated until success Just DOING IT (the habit) is much more important than how much you do. What seeds would you like to plant this week that can grow into a character quality or good habit? More intentional physical activity or cooking from scratch? More time with people who are important to you or more energy on your gifts than on daily trivia? And…the really good news is…by consciously deciding to create a new habit in a small way, you can harness the power of your subconscious mind making it easier to do once established – motivation and willpower no longer required! To give it even more strength, piggyback the new habit onto an old established habit or something you regularly do. It will seamlessly become part of your routine. And it couldn’t be easier. No matter what you want to work on - from eating cleaner, to moving more, to managing your stress – just take small steps to start with. Before you know it, your small changes will add up to big results, implementing real, lasting change and helping make 2017 your healthiest year yet!

He says, she says When it comes to gender differences, it’s not all pink and blue, as Karen Wardell found in her casual survey of colour perceptions.
S
he wants one colour, he wants another. We’ve all heard them discussing it in shops and on the street. That one word, ‘colour’. Everybody reacts to it; that it should conjure up so many images and stir up our emotions remains one of life’s mysteries. Most of us are aware of the power of colour and that it affects our buying patterns, behaviour and well-being on a deep and psychological level. But why are we so adamant that what we think about a certain colour and its connotations is truthful? And why do men and women have very different opinions when it comes to choosing colours? To test the theory, 30 Resene colours were selected and participants were asked to match them to 10 corresponding moods: Happy/sad, optimistic/pessimistic, love/hate, active/passive, anxious/calm. They also had a choice of nominating any other colours they desired. The 30 colours were selected with care, using red, yellow, blue, green, aqua and purple. Warm and cool colours were chosen as well as light or dark shades and tints. Terracotta was the only earthy hue, although it was not popular and designated as a hateful colour by women. Men, of course, disagreed entirely. As a result, many debates ensued with total strangers and friends, while others tried to ‘help’ their partner fill in the blanks correctly. There was some discussion about what colour ‘sky blue’ was, and why one person chose green for both ‘love’ and ‘happy’. Around 60 percent of participants were female, but results were certainly not divided anywhere near twothirds in their favour. For instance, the sexes could not agree on the colour of red for love, and more men by

comparison chose pink. Traditionally yellow is the colour of happiness in Western society. More men chose this colour whereas the majority of women opted for a much warmer shade of yellow, some even choosing gold. A definite pattern emerged with warm colours more prevalent for positive moods. Colours such as mauve and lavender were chosen as calming colours along with light blue and apple green – all of which have a component of blue. Off-white was only chosen (but, at least, agreed on) by both sexes as being a passive colour. Overall, orange and yellow were happy and optimistic colours, but orange was also chosen as an anxious colour by both sexes. More men thought of orange as happy and apricot as optimistic. Red was definitely voted the colour of activity, with green the second choice – even though they are opposite colours on the colour wheel. Most of the colour preferences fell into the category of analogous colours, i.e. colours that sit on the same side of the colour wheel, with the exception of the emotion ‘anxious’ which moved violently from one side to the other between blue and orange. Interestingly, nobody chose the colour of learning (pale yellow) as a positive colour, nor did any of the visual arts students choose purple (which is an artistic colour) while grey was overwhelmingly classified as sad. Says the survey author Karen Wardell: “Colour only takes on its true identity when placed next to another colour. It is forever changing, ephemereal and illusive – so simple, yet so complicated.” As to why can’t men and women agree? That’s just the way it is.

ot sleeping through the night or waking up with aches and pains? Then you might need to consider the quality of your sleeping arrangements. We at BedsRus, pride ourselves in matching you to your perfect sleep. There are a myriad of things to consider when needing a new bed, for example, how old is your bed, have your needs changed in terms of the comfort level, is your pillow still doing its job of supporting your head and neck, is the bed making you feel hotter, what quality of linen do you have and what are you doing prior to going to bed… the list goes on.
First things first…how old is your bed and when should you replace it? The theory is we need to change our beds every 8 to 10 years. It is always astounding to realise that most people keep their beds for far too long and are unaware of the impact this has on their health, well-being and demeanour. Over a period of time our beds harbour a multitude of ‘undesirables’. Dust and moisture alone can affect your breathing, sleep pattern and general health and it is always a surprise to most people, that we lose 1 cup to a litre of fluid each and every night. This affects your bed in an adverse way, particularly if you suffer from asthma and allergies. That’s why a good waterproof mattress protector is advisable, plus it protects your investment over the 10 year warranty period.
Over time your mattress will no longer support you as it did when it was first purchased. The comfort layers will compact making the bed feel firmer, or if the bed was a softer model, it can also seem to dip, causing a large ridge between you and your partner. All beds, that are quilted on top, will contour, but should be no deeper than 35mm. It is vital that a new mattress is spun 180 degrees at least 4 times a year for even wear and tear. (Monthly is even better!) Your bed can deteriorate by as much as 75% over a period of 10 years. The general consensus is that when our beds start getting uncomfortable, we tend to purchase an underlay of sorts, be it wool, foam, latex, memory foam or even a thick polyester one. This might help in the short term, but again, once the mattress has lost its support, the underlay in turn will too and will mirror the state of your bed.
When ‘looking’for a new bed, it is vital that a number of important questions are asked and answered.

Since we only tend to purchase a new bed for ourselves every 8 to 10 years, one needs to be mindful of evolving technologies which are forever improving. I highly recommend an experienced sales person ask you the correct questions in order to match you to your perfect sleep. Different spring systems and choices of comfort layers are designed for different needs, ie what position you sleep in, what support you need, whether you are sharing the bed or sleeping alone, how little you want to be disturbed by your partner and the temperature of both you and the bed, etc. I would discourage lying on too many beds in store, as this will only confuse you. But at the end of the day, your level of comfort and support as well as your budget, will determine your choice. Therefore ‘looking’ at beds, will not help you in your decision making, you need to set time aside and get horizontal, as a bed is not for

we were growing up, most of us slept in a single bed which is 91cm wide, but when it comes to sharing our bed with our partners, we tend to choose a queen. A queen bed is 153 cm wide, which leaves us approximately 75cm each. (I am not taking the ‘cuddlers’ into this equation.) But 75cm is hardly enough space to turn over without disturbing your partner. Whenever you want to change your sleeping position, you actually wake yourself up in order
to do so, as you need to lift and lower yourself to the next position….there is no room to roll, resulting in interrupted sleep. In an ideal situation, we should all have a super king (183cm wide) which equates to two singles. Beds in NZ do not get any longer as the size goes up, and would need to be a special make, but are available.

This will depend on the age and type of base you have. Most older beds, had sprung bases, but in the past 7-8 years, these have been changed to slatted platform bases. I am only discussing Sleepyhead beds as this is the only brand we sell at BedsRus. The good news is, that now you will not need to replace the base again once you have one. (They have a 10 year warranty). This goes for solid slat bed frames as well. All of our mattresses can be purchased individually and be used on solid slat bed frames. If you have a flexi slat bed frame, the slats will lose their support over time and will need replacing. Be aware that not all bases are made equally. You will need to look for one that is constructed well. The Sleepyhead bases are made of high strength laminated timber. Another advantage is that bases now come in several colour choices, so no need for a valance. p.s. me of the French Provence with dried flowers and mostly white and beige base colours. Urban Modern: think sleek, low profile furniture
o you’ve decided to update the paisley wallpaper and shag-pile rug in your living room, but where do you start? Redecorating can be a minefield with all the different colours and styles available. It can end up costing twice as much as you intended if you end up buying the wrong furnishings. Here are 5 tips to help you create the living space of your dreams.
teamed with bright, artistic flare. Shabby Chic: an antique market look. Shabby chic should be beautiful crafted furniture that has got a less-then finished look to it, like it has worn over time. Typically pastel or white finishes.
1. Know your Foundations.
3. Decide on one Feature Piece.
First of all, if you do actually have a shag-pile rug and paisley wallpaper, retro is in – so just own that 70s masterpiece. Otherwise, strip your lounge down to the basics. What are some elements that can’t be replaced right now? Is there lots of light? No light? Is it small? An odd shape? What’s the flooring like? Knowing what can’t be changed gives you an idea of what sort of styles will work.
Once you’ve chosen your style, you need to decide which part of the room you want to work from. It could be a window with an amazing view, it could be an exquisite coffee table you’ve chosen, or a new couch – anything you like. Decide what it is about that feature that you love and start there. Try not to think of the bigger picture to start with, just about highlighting this piece.
2. Pick a Style.
4. Think of Composition
There are 8 main styles when it comes to decorating. Everything else is just an extension of those. Midcentury Modern: think moulded plastic, plywood and aluminium. Eames was very popular during this time period. Industrial: raw steel, distressed wood and exposed brick walls. As the name would suggest, this style dates back to the industrial era. Nautical: in true beach house spirit, this theme boasts blue and white stripes with splashes of red. Unfinished wood is another popular feature. Scandinavian: A balance of engineered and organic materials, this theme is likened to furniture from Ikea and closer to home- Kmart. Bohemian: carefree and adventurous, hippie style. This look lends itself nicely to textiles, wood, animal hides and metallic accents. Farmhouse: Distressed wood paired with beautifully upholstered linen. This style reminds
Once you’ve chosen your feature, try to keep the rest of the room as simple a possible. In your accessories, think of composition and altering the height of things. For example, a large vase next to a smaller coffee table can make it look a bit less minuscule compared to a large couch. Bring in your furniture so it frames your ‘feature’ piece.

5. Choose one Feature Colour. The easiest way to incorporate colour is to choose one colour and stick to it. You can do varying shades, just don’t try to throw as much colour on the palette as possible – everyone knows that’ll turn to brown once it’s all mixed in! The most important thing is not to do what’s in trend, or what looks good in other people’s houses. Decorate with accessories you love, it’s you that has to live in the house. Why shouldn’t you surround yourself with things of beauty?

GARDENING
Time for Little an autumn hedges to tidy up love I BY DEBBIE OLDFIELD
BY ISABEL KRAUSS
love low growing hedges. They are neat borders to magnificent gardens, make the whole garden look tidy and last for many years! It may take a little bit of planning of where to put your hedge and what to plant, but maybe some of the suggestions below will make your decision easier.
Boxleaf Honeysuckle (Lonicera nitida): With its very compact growth and tiny leaves this plant can be used for hedging as well as topiary and is much faster than a Buxus. There is also a golden form available which is very pretty.
Pittosporum ‘Little Sprite’A dwarf Pittosporum very much like the popular ‘Golfball’ but half the price! Can be trimmed into a neat little hedge or left to its own devices as it has a naturally round shape.
Australian Rosemary (Westringia Brevifolia): a pretty hardy Australian native that will tolerate drought and coastal conditions. It is quick to establish, disease resistant and even has lovely mauve coloured flowers.
Corokia ‘Geentys Green’: Although you usually see Corokias trimmed to about 1m high, you can have them as low as 30-50cm. I have seen a lovely Corokia hedge in a private garden in Whangarei that looks as tidy as Buxus, but is more tolerant of the NZ conditions!
Golden Daisy Bush (Euryops pectinatus): With its bright yellow daisy flowers and
I
ts finally cooling down a little, and more rain (hopefully) will fall. There are lots of jobs that need doing in the garden this time of year.
Fertilising plants and lawns - Once the lawns are actively growing
again after that droughty summer we had, it may pay to get them into shape before winter. Apply lime and if you have lots of dandelions, plantain and carrot weed in the lawn then either cut them off 1-2cm below the surface level with a sharp knife and feed with a lawn fertiliser, or apply a weed and feed type product. This will kill most of those broadleaf weeds as well as giving the lawn a much needed fertiliser boost. You should also be fertilising your plants and trees. Any citrus trees, give them a feed with proper citrus fertiliser so they can get the extra potassium and magnesium they need. Most other trees and shrubs will need a general purpose fertiliser, unless of course you used the slow release fertiliser tablets which feed your plants for 2-3 years.
grey-green foliage this shrub is a delight to look at as it hardly ever stops flowering. It can tolerate a wide range of conditions including drought and coastal exposure, but grows best in well-drained soil
Teucrium fruticans: With its grey-silvery foliage and the mauve coloured flowers it can be a great contrast to your lime green lawns or other plants in your garden. With its very compact growth habit it can be shaped into a perfect box hedge. Make sure you give your plants a regular feed, especially in autumn and spring, and trim regularly to maintain the shape.
Pruning deciduous fruit trees – some people do this in winter, I tend to do it late summer/early autumn. I take 1/3 to ½ of the top of the tree off to keep them manageable and easy to pick for next season. First, cut out any inward facing branches to create a vase shape to the tree. Also cut out any branches that are rubbing or crossing over each other. Then you can start looking at the general shape and size that you want to get it to. If you have had any disease problems such as leaf curl on your peaches or nectarines then gather up any diseased leaves and either burn them or put them in your rubbish. Please don’t leave them lying around on the ground or compost them as this just creates a problem for next year.
Vege gardens – The soil will need its nutrients replenished. I love to add in sheep pellets, compost and organic fertilisers. My favourite at the moment is one called Rok Solid. I used this over spring and summer and was impressed with the vegies I grew. Very healthy, and nowhere near as many bugs or diseases this year which was great as I don’t like using insecticides/fungicides on anything I eat.

here is something very retro and quirky about this central cafe in town. We were greeted with enthusiasm and humour deciding on what two hungry women wanted to eat, immediately feeling like good old regulars, similar to the clientele on the popular television series, Cheers. They seemed to know everyone by name. Coffees were rolled out by memory and laughs were enjoyed throughout the cafe as happy diners ducked in and out over the lunch rush. With so many options to choose from, both cabinet and set menu, it took a while for our stomachs to catch up on decision making. Soon I settled on The M.R. Creamy mushrooms, avocado, poached egg and toast for $18.90. The presentation was lovely, topped off with edible flower petals. I’m pretty fussy with creamy mushrooms as it’s one of my favourite dishes and it can be made too runny and bland. However, Bob Cafe has the tick from me as I devoured the plate between conversation. My dining partner went for the Pulled Pork Sandwich from the menu. BBQ pork, lettuce, tomato, beetroot with Focaccia and fries for $16.50. Generous helpings and served with a smile. To top off our lunch, we also ordered a side of fries for $6.50 and a pot of tea with a gluten free carrot cake muffin to share for a fiver. I often wonder what I will get when ordering gluten free. I immediately imagine a tad drier and maybe not as good as the real thing for some reason, however, oh my goodness these muffins are amazing, moist and served how a carrot cake should, with cream. The little space we had left to fill, we filled it. Heading back to work, we waved goodbye having experienced top hospitality, a delicious lunch and a fun business meeting in a dynamic environment. Parking wasn’t problem with many options nearby and handy to The Strand to continue one’s shopping expedition or a gentle walk back to the office.

and appeared to be dehydrated and couldn’t walk properly. The landowner contacted Todd at Backyard Kiwi and it was taken to Robert Webb at the Whangarei Native Bird Recovery Centre for treatment. TJ was only 219g, which is light even for a young chick, but after a shaky start TJ began putting on weight. 6 weeks later TJ was a healthy 440g and with the drought broken by a week of rain it was time for TJ to come home. An ID chip was put in him before he was released back at Mckenzie Bay. Todd Hamilton from Backyard Kiwi says “With all the rain over the last week, it was time to return TJ home to where he was found. Now the ground isn’t hard and dry, he’ll be able to feed well and keep growing.” If you find injured or distressed kiwi or wildlife, act quickly as it may just save their life. TJ is really thankful that his “landowner” helped him and hopes to repay him someday with

Screen For Screams: how to tell what your child is whining about now
M
y three year old daughter cries plenty, but that’s not to say she’s ALWAYS crying.
Just to mix things up a little, she also spends her 14 waking hours a day whining, bleating, kvetching, nagging, moaning, complaining, whinging, whimpering, bellyaching and griping. I can’t count the number of times she screams per day, because if I tried to sit down to open up a spreadsheet and write a tally, I would be interrupted by yet another scream. My daughter screams at my five year old boy; he screams back;
I
hadn’t trained for months. I am barely a runner and had little time for stretching before the event. However, something in me entered anyway. Something inside told me to push myself out of my comfort zone (and take my daughter with me). You see, lately, Miss Ten has tapped into her potential for the first time in her life. She has seen what she can do when she puts her mind to it and tries hard. Before ten, she would doubt herself and give up quickly. To encourage this new way of thinking, it was important that we did something big together. That she accomplished something outside her comfort zone and completed a goal that she may not have thought was possible. With joint doubts, we didn’t stop to dwell on exit strategies; we just set off for the start line. She felt the butterflies in her tummy and
embraced them. We then acknowledged the sheer excitement when the horn blew, finding ourselves engulfed in the crowd… all heading for the same goal. Everybody tasting the nerves and joy rolled into one. The rain belt down until our shoes were filled with water, squelching as we took every step. Our bodies pushed to the limit. We walked then ran, we held hands, encouraging each other and both wanting to give up at times but never losing focus. Together, we made it across the finish line and with a great time. Miss Ten listened to the cheering; she watched as faces smiled her in and celebrated her achievement. She felt it. When was the last time you felt it? I dare you to set a big goal this season.
