1 The lure of South America For seasoned travellers Jan Hewitt and Tony Collins, dining out on scorpions, grass hoppers and ants and diving with sharks is all part of the holiday adventure. BY JODI BRYANT

he Northland residents’ latest escapade spanned six weeks over January and February and encompassed parts of mid and South America, exploring both new and places the couple of 25 years had travelled before. “We had a few countries on our bucket list in Central America plus we wanted to return to see families in South America from our last visit a few years ago,” explains Jan, a regular traveller since the 80s. Tony, on the other hand, began ticking off his bucket list in recent years, which has included their two previous trips to South America. “This was an extension of those two trips but we also wanted to catch up with the host parents of both our boys from when they did year-long rotary exchanges in Chile and Argentina respectively,” Tony explains, adding that Jan has more of the travel bug than he. “It was more of a resignation that she is going to travel anyway so I better go with her and, meanwhile, my aspirations of buying a boat keep going on hold,” he laughs. Nevertheless, that didn’t stop him having the time of his life with his best friend and partner. “I think New Zealanders often tend to focus on Europe and the northern hemisphere possibly because of heritage but South America is so accessible, has such a varied culture, the weather is great in our summer holiday period when we can get time off work and once you are there, it is reasonably good value for money. The direct flights certainly help as opposed to when you had the Australian stop over. While Spanish is the primary language communication is not too difficult.” The couple’s itinerary began in Mexico City, and took them to Merida and onto

2

Cancun. Then it was onto Cuba and Havana, Colombia to Cartagena on the Caribbean Coast and Medellin. Then Ecuador and out to the Galapagos Islands before Quito, the Cloud Forest and onto Chile and Argentina, where they stayed in Santiago with friends before heading to Buenos Aires and then home. “The worst thing about going somewhere new is there is never enough time to see everything and when you interact with other travellers along the way, you hear of so many other amazing places that you want to explore,” says Tony. But their itinerary catered to this to some extent with a combination of planned excursions and activities and free time to allow the flexibility to take advantage of anything that piqued their interest. They both highly recommend having a travel agent who has experienced some of these regions personally. “In Santiago, one of our son’s host families arranged what they thought we should see and that was great because we got a real

3

local perspective of Santiago which was quite different from the last time we had done it solo,” Tony says. Unlike, many, it didn’t take the busy working couple long to unwind. Says Tony: “We are lucky that we don’t get jet lag and can generally start enjoying any break as soon as we start and then switch back to work almost as easily.” So, switching into holiday-mode, they soon found themselves living it up on sunset cruises, sipping margheritas poolside, swimming in enclosed cenotes (natural swimming holes) amongst stalactites and stalagmites, bats and fish, carrying out walking and food tours, zip-lining and visiting ruins, to name but a few. The couple cite highlights as swimming

Whangarei Women representing New Zealand

BY JODI BRYANT

Three Whangarei women from a small local triathlon club are joining a team of 64 athletes to represent New Zealand in the Multisport World Championships in Spain this month.

M

andy Edge, her coach Christine Fraser-Kitchen and Fiona Southorn are gearing up to set off to Pontevedra, a city in the northwest of Spain, to represent their age groups in duathlon events. The event runs from April 27-May 5 and is self-funded by the competitors. Christine has been a group fitness instructor for 34 years and coaches running and triathlons. She began running as a teenager with her mum, who, at 82, still runs and competes. “I was a very chubby teenager and went into the very popular running boom to lose weight,” recalls the 57-year-old grandmother of three. “I found I loved it, lost the weight and became quite good at doing well nationally and overseas, running everything from 1,500 metres on the track to marathons.” After injury struck, the bike and swimming were introduced to the schedule. Triathlons were becoming popular so she dabbled in those and has since represented New Zealand seven times in age group triathlon and duathlon. “I love to train, I love the journey of the goal. Training with and coaching Mandy has had the added benefits of friendship and motivation,” says Christine, who was seven months pregnant while taking part in a halfmarathon when the two first encountered. But it wasn’t until Mandy’s first stint at world competing in 2015 that the women became solid friends, both vowing to compete until the age of 80 in order to secure a podium finish. A keen cyclist, Mandy’s own journey into competitive multisport events began when she tagged along with her then teenage daughter on a training expedition. She had no intention of taking it seriously herself. However, while encouraging her daughter’s

training and recuperation from an injury, Mandy caught the multisport bug. “My daughter Rachyl had been doing triathlons, but she got injured which knocked her back,” Mandy explains. “To encourage her, I decided to give it a go and we trained together.” However, Rachyl’s injury kept returning and, while she eventually moved onto other interests, Mandy’s grew, as did her fitness. She joined the Whangarei Tri Club, which currently has 25 members, including children, and has participated in events locally, nationally and internationally in the ten years since. “The club has been around for years and people get frightened because they think we’re all pros. We’re not, none of us are, we’re just normal people that train together and it’s actually quite therapeutic. “With owning a business, I couldn’t commit to a team at first as I had to work every Saturday,” continues Mandy, who owned A’Fare, from the age of 17 until she sold the catering business last year, 37 years later. She now works part-time at Northland Cricket, which allows plenty more time to train. But despite the extreme workload of being an owner-operator, four years ago, on the downlow, Mandy entered an overseas race. She made the team and is now returning for her third Duathlon World Championships which involve a 5km run, 20km bike ride, finishing with a 2.5km run. Joining them is team mate and friend Fiona Southorn, who will be competing in the Para-sprint event. Fiona is a New Zealand Paralympic cyclist, who represented New Zealand in the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Summer Paralympics. Fiona started running while looking for a way to keep fit without spending hours on the bike. “My flat mate was entering in the

As well as the time and effort these competitors have put in, they believe the experience wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for the support from family and friends. Auckland duathlon champs so I thought I would go along for the ride. I was surprised to see I did reasonably well.” Since then, in between selling real estate full-time at Bream Bay Realty, Fiona has devoted her training towards cycling, track and duathlon world championships, being honoured for her services to cycling in 2017 and making plenty of friends along the way. Training for the event began before Christmas last year for the ladies and involves two hard weeks of build-up including three hours a day of track, RPM, body balance and weight training, followed by a slower week. In addition to being well-prepared the three local women are looking forward to exploring Pontevedra in Spain, a city known for its rich architecture and historical buildings.

Savvy Sharp Dressers With predicted temperatures for April being 20 degrees-plus and shops crammed with autumn/winter garments, it’s a clothing retailer’s ‘no man’s land’.

ne hundred per cent merino garments just don’t cut the mustard, when the comfort clothing of the hour screams sleeveless natural fibre dresses and sandals that were sold out in January. Yet, conformity prevails and Autumn/Winter stock has always arrived in February, March and April, irrespective of climate outcomes and we just have to be creative and run with it. So, what entices you to shop for clothing in Whangarei? Why do you consider purchasing an autumn/winter garment in the heat of our April sunshine and how do you know what to buy at the launch of a new season?? We are here to help. The reason savvy, sharp dressers are purchasing ahead of season in February, March and April, is that they are aware of the market. They know that the majority of labels in 2019 no longer provide stock service, which means that when they’re gone, they’re gone. The savvy, sharp dressers choose to buy early when the size ranges are available, therefore, they get what they want ahead of time. They have chewed up and spat out the methodical shopper, who, in August requests the size 12 Sabatini hairysleeved navy merino jumper in a size medium that was sold at the beginning of March, or the bulky knit jumper with the floppy cowl neck that adorned Zaffina’s cover page booklet, which sold out completely at the end of February. Retail is no longer reliant on bricks and mortar. Online presence is essential for any fashion clothing business, which is why any savvy retail clothing business needs to triangulate website, social media and shop, to inform their clientele of what is out and about each season.

Vassalli jacket and pull on pants

As independent retailers, it is our job to know our stuff. New stock arrives daily from up to 25 different sources and we need to be able to crosscultivate between labels, mix and match them so that we can produce outfits that rock any catwalk, especially yours. Our looks for this autumn/ winter season radiate knitwear. Cashmere and merino jumpers by Bridge and Lord are baggy and oversized for the taller broader frame or cropped and hooded for the more petite. Sabatini’s 100% merino ankle Sabatini’s 100% merino coat length coats in striped taupe or forest, shout ‘collector’s piece’ and Zaffina’s caramel and black leather jackets are just ‘easy’ nice. Not to forget Vassalli – our stock service supplier who does everything right and Minx shoes, who’s famous Willot boot can be ordered anywhere or anytime. Belts, blousing and tucking are suddenly on the fashion radar. Unfortunately, with the decade-long strength of the tunic, most belt companies have gone under or turned their attention to handbags, so finding a great belt has complications. Don’t despair, along with the resurgence of wide-leg pants and cropped jumpers, blousing and tucking will flourish yet and we’re looking at importing belts. Right now, in our Polwarth Design Okara shop, we continue to experiment and sample new looks and styles that will work for you this season. It’s always work-in-progress, which we love, especially when we can incorporate our wonderful clientele – you - as our ‘in-house models’. Happy Autumn/Winter 2019.

Where is your business right now? Ask yourself these questions: • Do you jump on board every day and know where you are heading? Working reactively from your emails and other people’s agenda is a problem. You may find that your own business goals aren’t being met. Take a look at how you start your day - is it from your own itinerary? • Are the actions you are taking, moving you closer to the destination? Sometimes we don’t want to do the harder tasks first. Is it time to break up with praise?

N

o matter how many awards I won growing up, how many times I came first in a dance comp, or how many workshops I ran, I never felt true happiness or a sense of pride in my success, unless I received praise from someone. As a result, I would jump straight into picking apart what I could’ve done better, I’d immediately look for the next learning opportunity so I could improve, and I’d get pulled into negative thought patterns around whether I was good enough, if people liked me, or whether or not it was even worth me trying anymore. All because no one said anything. I knew I had to get to the bottom of this, or else I’d spend the rest of my life running an endless and fruitless race, and, more importantly, it was holding me back from being able to enjoy my life. In a nut-shell, I had to learn how to break up with praise.

Sarah is an internationallycertified Health and Lifestyle Coach, passionate about helping you live your best life - a life that’s healthier, happier, and way more fulfilling.

As I started down this journey, I discovered I was not alone. There were many others suffering from an addiction to approval, and the need for validation in their work, relationships, and even their bodies. So, how can we break up with praise, and start enjoying our own successes?

WELLBEING

YOU ARE THE CAPTAIN

magine leaving the harbour with no map, no GPS coordinates, no destination and no idea of where the next port is. That would be crazy!

BY SARAH TRASS

Would you like to live a life untethered from the approval and praise of others? Do you want to start living a life that feels good on your terms? Book your FREE 30-minute consultation today and let’s get you moving! www.sarahtrass.com

1. Address your fears – Attachment to praise is less about the external situation, and more about our own internal needs and motivations. If we were honest with ourselves, the validation we seek comes from a negative belief we believe, or fear, to be true about ourselves. Therefore, stop and ask what limiting belief, or doubt about yourself, is driving your need for validation? 2. Find a bigger meaning – When we put all the attention on ourselves and get caught up in how WE feel and OUR thoughts, our view becomes very narrow. Turn your attention outwards, and ask yourself what’s more important to me here than receiving praise? 3. Take back your authority – When we are seeking praise and validation from others, we are giving away our authority and rights on the matter. This leaves us wide open to the whims and opinions of what other people think about who we are, how we look, our work, our abilities, our worth. HEALTH

Semi-permanent makeup or eyeliner tattooing is becoming popular

I

t was used in the early 1980s as a medical restoration to address the appearance of patients with conditions such as alopecia, burn victims, cancer survivors, and vitiligo. Eyeliner tattooing is the make-up tattooing treatment that a cosmetic tattooist needs to exercise the greatest care when performing to ensure that the client does not have an adverse outcome. In addition to the delicate nature of the eyelid and eye itself, eyeliner tattooing is the most challenging and potentially the most dangerous to remove. Our sense of sight is our most precious sense and cosmetic technicians need to be well-trained and knowledgeable about the anatomy of the eye. The common procedure for micropigmentation involves instilling a topical or injected anesthetic and using a vibrating needle to deposit pigment granules into the epidermis beneath the upper layer of skin. Each time the needle penetrates the skin, a droplet of pigment is released into the hole made by the needle. It takes 3-4 weeks for the colour to fade into its permanent shade. It is a misconception that cosmetic tattooing is permanent, the pigment only lasts several years and will then fade. As this procedure is becoming more popular, there are some major risks to tattooing of the eye lid line that the patient must be aware of before moving forward.

encapsulates foreign substances in the skin (the ink). b. Keloids - bumps and elevations that occur due to an overgrowth of scar tissue. This occurs more commonly in patients that choose to have removal of a previously performed micropigmentation.

3 4

If a dye containing iron oxide is used, the patient may experience a burning sensation in the treatment area during Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

Allergy - If the patient is allergic to the dye (or something in the dye) this can be devastating as the irritant cannot be removed. Allergies can occur within hours, days, weeks, or years later. Iron oxide is least likely while vegetable, organic, or herb-based dyes are more likely to produce an allergic reaction.

5

Pigment migration occurs over time and can be minimal or very cosmetically significant, making small distinct lines look like large colourful smudges. Migration of the pigment depends of the patient’s age, skin type, if on blood thinners and occurs more with India ink and less iron oxide-based dyes.

Risk of infection - the main potential pathogens for infection include Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. There is a possibility of the product being contaminated during manufacturing but more commonly contamination comes from general produce use and use with multiple patients. The bacteria present is generally proportional to the expiration date (as the effectiveness of preservatives decreases with time), when

.Meibomian gland dysfunction or drop out - Eyelid tattooing can increase tear film instability through meibomian gland disturbance, and patients could have exacerbated signs and symptoms of dry eye disease. Exercise yourself happy W

e all know exercise is good for us. It makes us stronger, keeps our weight in check, reduces our risk of disease and keeps us youthful for longer. But did you know that exercise can also make you a happier person? It’s true. When you work out and are active on a regular basis, it’s not just a coincidence that you feel less stressed out, less anxious, and generally happier and here are eight reasons why this is so: 1. Releases happy chemicals – Dopamine, a neurotransmitter in the brain that’s necessary for feelings of pleasure and happiness. As we grow older, we constantly lose our stores of dopamine and the best way to increase production is to get active - run, lift, jump and play,

2. Makes you less stressed out – Research reveals that active people are less depressed than inactive people. Exercise seems, not only important for treating depression, but also in preventing relapse. When you exercise in a way that pushes you physically along with triggering a burst of positive hormonal change, you also build more mental resilience and when you are mentally tougher, you can handle more stress. This mental toughness helps in other aspects of your life. You can handle more of anything. 3. Energizes you – Many people find that their most productive time comes AFTER they exercise, powering through their tasks feeling more energized throughout the rest of the day. The higher your energy level, the more efficient your body. The more efficient your body, the better you feel and the more you will use your talent to produce outstanding results and success in life which means greater happiness.

4. Boosts your confidence – When you don’t feel good about your body or how you look, it’s all too easy to have low self-esteem. And that can have a negative effect on all areas of your life including your relationships, your career, and your goals and aspirations. But when you start to exercise and start to feel and look better, that can quickly change as you feel stronger, more independent, and more confident. There’s nothing like a boost in confidence to increase overall happiness. 5. Eases anxiety – If you suffer from anxiety, exercise is a simple fix. Studies on the effects of exercise show that in people suffering from anxiety, the immediate mood boost from exercise is followed by longer-term relief. So next time you are feeling anxious, try a challenging workout - you will feel happier for days afterwards. 6. Fights insomnia – Trouble sleeping? Staying active and exercising on a regular basis improves sleep quality. And it can also give you that pep that makes you want to get out of bed in the morning and do things. And that equals greater happiness, every time.

HEALTH

- and stronger, fitter, leaner, smarter and calmer too!

BY CAROLYN HANSEN ANYTIME FITNESS, WHANGAREI

8. Participate in life – Happiness can come when you feel healthy enough to do anything you want to do. When you can engage in play with children, participate in sporting activities, travel to far off places or do more things with your partner, life is amazing. When you don’t even have to think about whether you are fit enough for basic activities, that is a great place to be. It’s amazing what exercise can do for your whole life. It’s not just about getting into a better mood. It’s about making life more joyful! When it’s easier to move, it’s easier to do everything you want to do! Because you will not only feel more confident, energized, and calm – you will be a healthier and happier person for life.

7. Makes life feel easier – If you could get through your day in a physically easier way, wouldn’t that be nice? When you improve your strength and fitness, life just feels easier and you can fit more good things in to make life more fun and enjoyable.

We are all travellers and each of us has our own travel persona, whether it be the Adventurer, the Sports nut, or The Cruise Queen, our staff of eight have YOU at the core of what we do. Our personal absolute favourite thing to do is hosting tours away. Leaving from Whangarei as a small group to travel to amazing destinations is a unique and hassle-free way to tick off all those bucket list items and being hosted adds a whole new dimension to travel, with little surprises along the way, and memories just waiting for you. It is our great joy to dream the dream for you, to imagine and engineer great journeys to excite and inspire, and to surprise you with ideas you hadn’t yet imagined. Leading them as well, is an incredible privilege. Sharing the journey, striving for perfection, building friendships, returning again. And there’s so much to choose from. Over the next few months we are hosting tours near and far. Our Australian rail and outback tour is now full, but we’re thinking about doing it again in June 2020. Scandinavia and the Baltics departing in August has just two spaces left and we are planning Norway in a nutshell, cruising the Baltics and Russia for next year. UK & Ireland, Castles & Coast has

sold out for this year, as has our African adventure for 2020, but we will do it again in 2021. There’s still space on David’s taste of Vietnam & Cambodia tour this October and Sarah’s Japanese Spring Celebration next April. Plus, we are looking to take trips to Canada & Alaska, and the ever-popular Croatia. We also take sport and special interest groups to events like WOW, Tennis open and Rugby games. Also, hot off the press, and in the planning stages, Antarctica, Iguazu & Easter Island in Feb 2021. And remember, all these holidays are hosted from Whangarei, taking the pain out of the process. Of course, you may wish to travel alone or with family or friends. We can help you with that too. Bring your ideas or ask us for ours. We’ve been doing this for a long time, and we LOVE what we do. Travel has changed and there’s a whole world out there waiting for you. Let us show you around.

30 TH ANNIVERSARY

A MILESTONE TO CELEBRATE

Joni Harms and Olivia

The 30th anniversary of the Bay of Islands Country Rock Festival in May is a milestone to celebrate.

F

or organiser Shirley May, who has been involved from the start, the pearl anniversary this year comes with a sense of achievement and pride that the festival has grown to be one of New Zealand’s longest-running live music events. While the first festival featured 15 bands at one venue, the modern version features the cream of the country rock crop from throughout New Zealand, Australia and sometimes other countries. More than 45 bands will be performing at seven venues in Waitangi, Paihia and Russell on May 10, 11 and 12. The event draws hundreds of people to the Bay of Islands during the quiet winter months,

for her songwriting. Other top New Zealand artists include Brendan Dugan, Eddie Low, Gray Bartlett, Joy Adams and Dennis Marsh. Che Orton is a New Zealand born singersongwriter and a Nashville recording artist. He has a loyal following in the US and he is constantly touring. Bridget Jones and the Blistered Fingers Band will bring a new sound, playing rock and roll blues, while internet sensation the Harmonic Resonators will play country hits and timeless classics. Among the debut acts are YY and The Definitive Showband. Young Chinese singer YY is a top model and aspiring country singer.

Shirley says badges are already selling well, and she is hoping the 30th festival will be one of the best. “There is something for everyone.” A free shuttle bus runs between venues in Paihia and Waitangi and discounted ferry passes are available so people can easily explore to find the venue that suits them. “Nothing beats listening to live music with your friends and the country rock festival is considered one of the best in New Zealand because of the friendly atmosphere, great venues and chance to talk to the artists between gigs.’’ The Harmonic Resonators

TAKE TIME OUT AND VISIT

HELENA BAY

GALLERY AND CAFÉ

Exquisite and Unique gifts for those who have everything.

If Pete Brown had continued his 20year sheep-shearing career abroad, there’d probably never be a Helena Bay Gallery and Café.

H

ard to imagine as it’s been a popular destination for both locals, New Zealand and overseas tourists for the last 15 years. So how did a global-roaming farmer’s son-come-sheep-shearer come to settle on a Northland cliff-top and establish an art gallery so sought-after he now regularly has problems accommodating artists’ requests to showcase their work? “I went on my OE in the 70s, intending to stay for up to six months but ended up shearing sheep in Norway, Wales and the States for 20 years,” explains Pete, who grew up on a farm in Ohakune. “During this time, I came across people who were working with wood and became interested in rustic wood, working in various forms. I returned to New Zealand in 1994 and invested in an I.T. startup in Auckland. When this didn’t work out, I moved north where I knew I wanted to live. The climate and landscape were the closest to the tropical Asian and Pacific areas I had

frequently visited whilst holidaying over many years.” Pete purchased 90 hectares on Old Russell Rd in 1995, subdividing and retaining nine hectares and, over the next 18 years, worked the steep bush-clad terrain, carving and sculpting the hillside into lush sub-tropical gardens, including ponds and water features, and exposing the magnificent sea views over Helena Bay. During this time, he undertook a polytech course to upskill his craft and creative abilities. Initially a workshop/storage shed was built, then eventually a purpose-built workshop and gallery space with living accommodation upstairs. Pete’s partner at the time suggested he also sell other peoples’ artworks and thus the project came to life. Such has been the growth, that the workshop space has since been entirely consumed by the gallery. The gallery started in 2003 with a small collection of works from Northlanders and Aucklanders but grew to feature a wide-ranging eclectic selection from both established and emerging artists. These artists were mostly from New Zealand but also some special pieces from across the globe. This now includes bespoke furniture, paintings, sculpture, glass, ceramics and jewellery ranging in price from $15 to $40,000, with many being snapped up by visitors and shipped to far-flung countries, such as the 2.5m steel moa which recently went to New York. But it didn’t stop there. Shortly after the gallery opened, Pete was approached by a German couple, wanting to settle in the area who suggested opening a café onsite. “I jumped at it, as long as they were going to run it,” Pete recalls. The café was also a hit and, despite the

isolation, being situated 30 minutes north of Whangarei and an hour from Russell, locals and tourists soon flocked. “People drive up from Auckland especially to come here and we’ve had visitors from the US hop straight off their plane and come out after Air New Zealand staff have recommended it.” Over the following 12 years, the café was successfully built up and then sold to current owner, former Aucklander Janet Pope who, with her husband Greg, owned a holiday home in the area and were regular customers to both the Gallery and Café. Says Janet: “I’d never worked in the hospitality industry before – I was a general manager for an investment advisory company - but always held a dream of owning a country pub or something similar.” While Janet says it’s been hard work, her and Greg are ‘living the dream’ in a very special part of the world and, instead of navigating Auckland traffic daily, she now just walks across the road to work. Since undertaking ownership of the café, it is open seven days with a staff of seven, and the adjacent gallery has a staff of five with the ‘official greeter’ Newfoundland (‘gentle giant’ water rescue dog) Wolfie one of the popular attractions. He was always accompanied by sidekick Picasso until he recently passed away after a brutal but mercifully brief battle with cancer. “The dogs have always been really popular with customers,” says Pete. “And watch this space, we hope to have another pup by Christmas.” The feedback is almost always positive apart from those who expect to let their dogs run loose on the property. “People want to bring their dogs here

thinking it’s a public place, but it’s actually my backyard and my dogs’ backyard, and the one place I can expect to keep them safe,” explains Pete. Pete’s property is a work in progress. With visitors already magnetized toward the breath-taking scenery, dotted with jawdropping unique sculptures and outdoor art work from over 100 artists, he has more plans: a wedding venue is on the cards. This conjures up memories of hard yards excavating the vertical land, but Pete remains undeterred: “Give me five years,” he smiles. And somehow, we already know this too will be a success. Pete adds: “this whole project has very much been a ‘Field of Dreams’, ‘and the people who come’ feel to it. It’s working out so far with visitors totalling approximately 30,000 each year.”

orthland’s food and beverage producers and hospitality players are being invited to come together for a tasty event aimed at helping shape the region’s identity to boost marketing and business growth opportunities. David Templeton, Growth Advisor with Northland Inc says the 2019 Savour Northland industry event at the Duke of Marlborough Hotel in Russell in April was being facilitated by the regional economic development agency in collaboration with Eat NZ, a not-for-profit linking producers with the hospitality industry. “We hope to bring together the Northland food and beverage ecosystem to develop the food and beverage story. This is an opportunity for everyone from producers to end users and the hospitality industry to develop a plan for putting Northland on the map as a food and wine destination, while boosting the national and global markets for what is produced in this region.

“Traditionally companies have developed their own individual stories as part of their marketing, but there is an opportunity for a Northland-wide story with room for cohesion. “When producers are looking at marketing overseas, or the rest of country, the brand as a collective will be powerful,” he said. Mr Templeton said Northland was a burgeoning wine region with quality wines being produced from Ahipara to Mangawhai, and the climate offering an opportunity for boutique wineries. “We have wineries, boutique breweries and distilleries, Kombucha and teas producers and a developing coffee roasting scene.” Northland food producers included everything from fruit and vegetables to seafood and meat, with many value-adding, such as avocado ice creams and unique products like Jerky by Caveman Candy and high-end fermented black garlic from Black Garlic Man in Whangarei. The Hokianga boasted its Fire Dragon Chillies, Whangarei was home to awardwinning Grinning Gecko cheese and Kaipara produced Wild West Worchester Sauce, which was a family recipe backed with clever marketing and a unique business. There was the seafood of Apatu Aqua at Coopers Beach distributing to Auckland restaurant market on a daily basis, while the K4 team at Haruru Falls had confidence to take big steps and had just bagged a contract to provide its Kombucha to the nationwide chain of Burger Fuel. With Kai Ora and Mana Kai Honey’s in the Far North, Kawakawa’s Bella Vacca Jersey was producing raw milk, and Mangawhaibased olive producers Echo Valley and Olives On The Hill were also part of the food and beverage story.

The weekend will kick off at 5.30pm on April 16 with the Gala Dinner, when Cuisine NZ Chef of the Year, Giulio Strula serves up a tasty menu from locally sourced food and beverages. Day two on April 17 will feature a workshop with Northland Inc and Eat NZ facilitating the discussion for producers and industry players, featuring success stories from across the region. One of those stories includes the launch of Savour Northland element of kiteAO, a new web platform developed to help connect skills and services in Northland. “A great outcome would be the industry being able to clearly articulate its food and beverage story and create a framework for industry to connect and work together,” Mr Templeton said.

THE CELEBRATION

OF LOCAL ARTS

W

hangarei Heads Arts Trail first took place in 2012 and was a huge success, revealing an unexpected wealth of local talent. Subsequent years have seen a steady growth in both numbers of participating artists and visitors. The event is now run by the artists themselves and happens every Easter Saturday and Sunday 10am - 5pm. Art work on show at the event includes painting of all types, prints and lithographs, photographs, blown glass and cast glass, textile work, bespoke jewellery, designer furniture, turned wood, metal work, sculpture, raku, pit fired and domestic pottery, stone carving, flax weaving, mosaic and more. The key aim of the event is to help all local artists to bring their work into the public domain. It is a celebration of unique local work in a world of global mass production. The weekend is also a great opportunity to see some of Whangarei’s most beautiful locations and stunning scenery. The trail starts in Onerahi and stretches to Ocean Beach but, in spite of the impressive number of artists and venues, being centred on one easily-accessible 35k scenic drive means it is readily ‘doable’ in a full day. Entry to all studios and halls is free but to find the listed locations, visitors are encouraged to buy a trail guide. Not only does the guide have a clear and detailed map, but each year it includes a free draw ticket. This year the prize is a $500 voucher to spend in Fire and Earth Studio run by metal worker Pete Brammer and potter Julie Cromwell. The 2019 Easter Weekend Trail will host 50 Artists exhibiting in 23 locations. With

work priced from $5 to $5,000 and exhibitors ranging from happy amateurs to professional artists, there really is something for everyone. Guides will be available from Whangarei i-Site on SH1, The Hub in the Town Basin and Parua Bay Gas station or they can be purchased on the day of the event from any community venue. Proudly supported by Creative Northland.

Fishing tips & tales with John Vowless Every time you get out in your boat for a fish, there is a chance you will have a magic experience.

R Whangarei local Glenn Baker caught this decent-sized fish in the Whangarei Harbour recently.

ecently Grant and Michael Couchman headed out of Whangarei Harbour for a fish at the Chicken Islands. On the way they came across a pod of dolphins and Grant jumped in and enjoyed swimming with these wonderful creatures. He also used his ‘Go Pro’ to get some special footage. Continuing over to the Chicks. they saw signs of skipjack tuna and caught a nice fish on a homemade lure. Anchoring up, they managed a good snapper catch; Grant dropped his plastic lure over the side in the current, thinking skipjack, and caught a nice snapper. There was a lot of fish activity in the area; kingfish swimming around and under the boat and large numbers of flying fish leaping out of the water in groups of about 30 to 40 fish, and tailing across the surface to escape the bigger fish looking for a feed. They up-anchored and headed for a shallow dive along the North side of the

Chicks, encountering many mass groups of jumping flying fish. Heading home, they encountered dolphins again and enjoyed their playful company around the boat. All this with good weather, a very magic day out! Whangarei Harbour is fishing well from the entrance right up to Onerahi, plenty of snapper being caught and although there are a few undersize fish, a lot of good eating-sized fish in the 35 to 45-cm range are being caught with some much bigger snapper to 75cm also being caught. Out off Ocean Beach/Taiharuru/Pataua at this time of year can be very good for marlin in 60 to 100m. Lately there has been quite a bit of activity out here; a lot of Hammerhead sharks, dolphins, flying fish and skipjack, and marlin have been seen but not many caught yet! This area can be very special at this time of year. I’ve heard of some good catches of snapper and kahawai using torpedos off our northern west coast beaches recently. Sharks can be a nuisance if the line is set too long - 20 to 30 minutes seems to be working best. The Bay of Islands and Karikari Peninsular areas are beautiful areas to fish and have also been fishing well with snapper to good sizes, as well as kingfish and kahawai. This is a very good time of year to be on the water in our beautiful Northland. Tight lines, John Vowless.

the enchanted garden

School holidays are coming, and Whangarei Quarry Gardens are preparing to have a host of magical characters onsite for one day as they are transformed into ‘The Enchanted Garden’.

T

he talented students from Northland Youth Theatre (NYT), Circus Kumarani and Sistema Whangarei Toi Akorangi will be bringing the gardens to life with performances throughout the day as they embrace the magic of working in this sub-tropical outdoor theatre. Whangarei Quarry Gardens (WQG) events manager Kerry Marinkovich says the children’s event evolved after NYT’s previous production at the gardens was a sell-out success. “Having quirky characters performing at Whangarei Quarry Gardens really enhances how special this space is. We want to create something really playful and quite unique for children to enjoy.” Children will be given an explorer’s map to go off in search of creatures and landmarks.

Along the way, they will discover magic shows, circus performances, a story telling grotto, a craft zone, bouncy castles, giant bubbles and face painting. It should be an amazing, interactive day for kids. “The Quarry Gardens is a wonderful space and inspires a host of magical characters,” says NYT manager Hayley Clark. “We are really excited to bring playful pixies, goblins and all the other wee folk to the Enchanted Garden, and if you are lucky, you may get a glimpse of the elusive shy unicorn.” Circus Kumarani will have a few fun activities, so if you want to be a circus star for a day, you can have a go at walking the

tightwire! Follow the music floating through the trees, and there you will find the talented children from Sistema Whangarei casting their spells upon everyone, as they enjoy their melodies. The Fairy Village will grow as the day unfolds. Kids are encouraged to build their own Fairy House at home and bring them in to add to the special village where they will have the chance to win prizes on the day of The Enchanted Garden.

# PROJECTFAIRYHOUSE If you need some help or inspiration, a ‘Fairy house workshop’ will be hosted at Whangarei Quarry Gardens on Saturday April 13 from 10am-1pm, $10 for materials - no bookings, just come along and create. Suitable for ages 6-12 years. Zippy’s Café will be on-site with frozen fruit ice-creams and coffee for parents trying to keep up with excited kids. The garden’s volunteers will be running a Mad Hatter’s Cake Stall and The Ogre’s Sausage Sizzle for peckish pixies. While raising funds for Whangarei Quarry Gardens, The Enchanted Garden is also proudly supporting Northland’s talented tamariki and providing them a really unique platform to perform on. Hopefully some of the children visiting will also be inspired to give the performing arts a go in the future. So, get creative, dress up, join the fun, and come see who is waiting for you at ‘The Enchanted Garden’.

FRESHEN UP WITH A MAKEOVER Want a new kitchen or bathroom but can’t deal with the cost and upheaval of ripping it out and starting again? Try a makeover. By Raewyn Court “If the design of your kitchen is functional and the cabinetry is in good condition, then it makes sense to do a makeover rather than start again,” says the owner of My Kitchen Makeover, Rob Thomas. Your mindful home – Travel Alex Badham, Designer and Owner of www.gathered.nz

T

raveling is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself. To be able to give your family a global view of the world and opportunities to experience new cultures, foods and languages is a gift without value. Maintaining a mindfulness practice while traveling is easy; you are naturally more aware of your surroundings and the experiences you are participating in daily. Staying in accommodation of any kind allows you to live with less; only the contents of your suitcase or backpack. We have always thought of ourselves as minimalists in our own home but, by traveling (even with two kids in tow), have realized how little we really need to be happy. We are so fortunate to have been on many trips overseas and within New Zealand over the last few years. We have backpacked through South East Asia with a toddler and spent some time around Wanaka and the South Island and, just this year, enjoyed a family holiday to Bali with two kids. We only ever travel with one backpack. It’s always filled with the things we love and use daily in our home. My linen robe has been around the world on every trip and we always have a stash of reusable string bags and coffee cups. We have even been known to pack a Chemex for a weekend trip to Waiheke.

If you are lucky enough to have travel plans this year, try to think about the things which you can pack which will allow you to maintain your daily rituals. The pieces of clothing which you love to wear, maybe a reusable bag or two to reduce your footprint on the places you visit. Reduce your toiletries to the minimum products which you need to

feel your best and enjoy spending time with your family or friends. Enjoy the small things about being away from home and take notice of the beautiful differences in your temporary location. Until next time, Alex.

Natural foods for a better sleep Lack of sleep can lead to stress, weight gain, depression and more – so actively working to find ways to fall asleep at night can have a huge impact on your overall wellbeing.

T

he food you eat can make a difference too, and we’re not just talking about laying off the coffee! Natural foods that contain magnesium, protein, carbohydrates, dairy and tryptophan will help make falling asleep a breeze.

Jasmine rice: Switch out white rice with jasmine rice at dinner for a sleep boost! With a high glycemic index, jasmine rice helps trigger insulin so the ratio of tryptophan to amino acid in the blood is higher (tryptophan helps us sleep).

Below are our top eight natural foods to aid sleep: Fish: Containing vitamin B6, fish helps to produce melatonin which helps you sleep. Go for cod or salmon in particular, though most fish will help you sleep at night.

Hard boiled eggs: Packed with protein, hard boiled eggs will stabilise your blood sugar to give you a full night’s sleep without interruption. At the beginning of the week, hard boil five eggs and refrigerate them – so you can have a bedtime snack ready for every night of the working week. Bananas: Full of magnesium and potassium, bananas help relax your muscles and trigger melatonin production so you’ll fall asleep quickly. Bonus point for bananas: because they relax muscles, they’ll also help with cramps.

Almonds: Because of their high magnesium levels, almonds promote sleep and muscle relaxation. Plus, the protein in almonds stabilises blood sugar levels, so you’ll probably fall asleep more easily AND sleep more soundly.

Cherries: Though it’s better to drink cherry juice, eating a cup of cherries before bed also helps to put you to sleep because of the naturally high melatonin in the fruit.

Spinach: High in magnesium, potassium and calcium – which all promote healthy sleep – spinach is THE leafy green vegetable to work into your diet for better sleep patterns. If you don’t like spinach, try another leafy green vegetable like kale. Oatmeal: Being warm and mainly consisting of carbohydrates, oatmeal is the perfect bedtime snack to put you to sleep. If you’re doing all the right things and still having a hard time falling asleep – the answer might lie right underneath you.

SHOULD I SELL MY HOUSE BY MYSELF? Selling a property is easy, right? All you need to do is stick a ‘for sale’ sign out front, put a few photos online and hold a couple of open homes. Job done! Why wouldn’t you do it yourself?

T

he fact that private sales made up just 10 per cent of all residential property sales in New Zealand in the year to July (down from 13 per cent in 2017 and 17 per cent in 2014) might be a clue that it’s not as simple and straightforward as you might think. Research by the industry membership organisation Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) found that the median price for properties sold by real estate agents was 10.9 per cent higher than private sales. “Property transactions are big financial deals and they can get complicated very quickly,” says Real Estate Authority chief executive Kevin Lampen-Smith. “Selling a home, which is likely to be your biggest asset as well as being a physical and emotional roof over your head, is not like selling a used car or flogging your unwanted Christmas presents on TradeMe.” If you decide to sell your property privately, you will absolutely save on the commission that you’d otherwise pay a real estate agent,” Lampen-Smith says.

“What you think of the property and what it’s worth won’t necessarily be shared by potential buyers ...” “Your target is to get at least close to what an agent would get for your house. You pay commission to an agent for them to get the best price and that extra value is what they will tell you pays your commission for you, along with less hassle on the DIY front.” You know your property better than anyone, so you’re in a good position to ‘sell’ its features. You’ll have complete control over the process because you’ll be dealing directly with potential buyers. You get to decide every step of the process, including choosing the method of sale and setting the price. However, with complete power comes complete responsibility, Lampen-Smith says. “When you’re selling a property, you have a legal obligation to share all the relevant information about it, such as any issues with the boundary or title, any unconsented building work or alterations, any known weathertightness issues and whether there are any proposed developments that could

BUYING

have an impact on a buyer’s access, views or enjoyment. “If you fail to do this, you could be in breach of your agreement with the buyer. This could put the sale in jeopardy, or the buyer could seek compensation and take you to court.” Lampen-Smith says would-be private sellers will need sharp marketing and negotiation skills, as well as the ability to be objective. “What you think of the property and what it’s worth won’t necessarily be shared by potential buyers,” he says. “It’s easy to sell a property when there are a few houses for sale and many buyers, but the market isn’t as buoyant now in parts of the country as it was a year ago. Your expectations of price and ease of sale are aligned with market conditions. These are things that real estate agents think about day in and day out.” If you’re still keen to DIY it, make sure

SELLING

you’ve got some good advice from the experts. “It can be very useful to get an independent assessment of what your property is worth, so you can work out the price you’ll be willing to accept,” LampenSmith says. “You can research online (for free) or pay for a registered valuation. We strongly recommend that you use a lawyer or conveyancer to handle all the legal documentation, including the sale and purchase agreement. You may also want to consider help when it comes to preparing the property for viewings, whether that means engaging a home staging company who will make it look pretty, or a trusted friend to run any open homes.” Ultimately, there’s no reason why you can’t sell your own property if you think you’ve got the time, skills and energy. You’ll need to be ready to juggle a lot of things at once – including marketing and negotiation – on top of your usual responsibilities. Whatever you do, make sure you go into the process with your eyes open. For independent guidance and information on buying or selling, check out settled.govt.nz.

henever you feel the need to pop a cork for a special occasion, entertain, or share delicious food among friends and family, you’re likely to be doing it in the dining area. This is a room which needs careful attention when it comes to selecting furnishings and working out the planning arrangements, such as the room width and length, table and chair size and type etc. Similarly to all other rooms in the house, style, function and furniture are important factors to ensure the space suits your way of living. Informal dining rooms are often best because there’s flexibility to turn them into other rooms for social activity, whereas informal dining rooms may rarely get used. “We have seen dining rooms adapt from traditional stand-alone spaces into open plan living, often incorporated into kitchen and living spaces. It is important to consider these spaces as a whole as well as giving the dining room its own identity and space within this area. Important things to consider are space, style, and feel of the area; are you after light and airy or intimate and cosy? Often these feelings will guide you to a colour palette,” Alex Pedersen, Resene Colour Consultant says. Alex recommends using Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen for dining rooms. It is available in any colour from the range, has a great low sheen finish and is durable and washable. Whatever activities you like to do in the dining room, make sure it is fit for purpose whether you want to have a bite to eat, have a cheeky beverage or two, or listen to your other half play the piano.

Set the theme Choose a theme or style for your dining area to ensure it remains a desirable room to be loved and used often. Giant chalkboards, kraft paper roll hung on the wall for huge menu displays, reminders or writing inspirational quotes, industrial style décor and Bentwood chairs are just some of the styles trending right now. Based on your mood you can change out the colour and style of your dining room by keeping it neutral in colour and then jazz it up using colourful table runners, an assortment of coloured drinking glasses or artwork.

“Wallpaper adds an element of texture, pattern and depth which can be used to create a feeling of warmth or of being somewhere different. There are so many different directions you can head in with wallpaper. From traditional to contemporary, deciding on your theme before browsing through all the wallpaper books at your local Resene ColorShop will make life so much easier,” Alex says. “For a bit of drama try Resene FX Metallic over anaglypta wallpaper.”

Colour While distracting wallpaper and complicated designs are best for larger rooms, for smaller dining rooms it’s often best to keep woodwork and floors in neutral tones by using one or two lighter shades of the same colour. Patterns can be incorporated by way of soft furnishings. “We are more comfortable with neutral tones and tend to tie this in with our whole house. Warmer tones suit dining spaces for an intimate feeling. For a traditional home, a lovely rich red such as Resene Pohutukawa would complement timber tones. For a contemporary minimalist look, a charcoal such as Resene Foundry with crisp white ceilings and architraves will work in well.” “Paint it light and bright for a feeling of openness, have a bit of fun and make a feature out of the space. Paint a bright colour on the walls to define the area, and use appropriate furniture maybe more of a café style.” Larger dining rooms need to feel cosy and homey. A starting point on how to decorate a larger room is to work out what the focal point will be and if you have a view from a window. With a big space it needs to be multiuse and have plenty of good storage. Display those precious items on shelving. Bring in a bit of drama with pattern and texture. Fill the space with appropriate and comfortable furniture. Use the walls as an art gallery. The options are endless however always refer back to your theme or feeling.

illusion of space. Glass-enclosed cabinets also provide convenient storage as well as visual appeal. You can make the room appear higher than it actually is by using vertical stripes on the walls and, if you’re blessed with floor-toceiling windows, you’re already winning.

Divide and conquer We find joy and convenience in being able to flip a room into a completely new space in an instant. Some people work from home and need an appropriate space to draw inspiration from and/or have some quiet time; others simply want the choice of being

able to transform one room into another, especially for those who have smaller homes. Incorporate a lounging area in the dining room to make the space feel casual and cosy, while using as much space as possible in an efficient way. Larger rooms can accommodate a partition and it doesn’t necessarily have to look like a roadblock in the middle of the room. Whether it’s a geometric metal divider, wooden slatted screen divide, or modular shelving system, partitions are a nod to an open plan living space which shows separation between rooms or allows you to close off areas completely at any time to create a new space.

YOUR DESIGN & BUILD SPECIALISTS

Illusion Smaller rooms need a bit of decorative assistance to enhance what’s already there. To create the illusion of light and space, opt for a round glass dining table and armless chairs. Furniture in white or cream and pale coloured carpet or flooring will reinforce the

Your planting experts from Alter-Natives Nursery & Landscaping talk to readers on this season’s gardening! Queensland firewheel tree

BEAUTIFUL SPECIMEN TREES

Stenocarpus sinuatus Queensland Fire Wheel Tree Australian flower and timber tree in the Protea family, originating from the rainforests of Queensland and New South Wales. The juvenile evergreen leaves are deeplylobed, shiny and lush dark green, changing on mature trees to smaller elongated oval leaves with wavy margins. It is worth growing for the foliage alone. In autumn and through most of winter, flamboyant whorls of orange-red flowers adorn branchlets and older twigs, partially obscured by the foliage giving the effect of embers glowing from within the tree. Flowers are followed by long leathery, bean-like seed pods. Bark is lightly furrowed and dark grey to brown. An under-utilised tree which should be grown more, especially here in the North. It’s dense, upright habit and minimal watering requirements makes The Fire Wheel Tree a good choice for street planting or as a specimen tree. In gardens it typically grows to 10m and, as it tolerates to lowlight, you can keep it in a pot as an indoor plant.

BY ROSE KRAAKMAN

can be used as a crop to create mulch (like Tagasaste). Also good as a shade tree on a large lawn growing to 10m-plus, is very adaptable, tolerates drought and is not fussy about soil.

Australian Frangipani

In spring and early summer, honey scented, tubular flowers open creamy white. An unusual feature is the flowers deepening to gold. It grows to approximately 8m but can be pruned shorter. Useful pleached or grown as a tall, fast-growing screen. Makes a lovely specimen tree.

Prunus lucitanica Portuguese laurel Dark green leaves and racemes of small white flowers in spring, followed by black berries. A good screening tree and popular hedging plant. Good plant to train into topiary standards or pillars. Excellent for formal design. Berries are poisonous to animals, so best to prune once flowering is finished if this is a concern. Likes organically-enriched soil and is not tolerant of wet. Will handle drought once established but best with deep watering in dry periods. Grows 4-5m.

Pride of Bolivia

Hymenosporum flavum Australian Frangipani Another Australian beauty from Queensland, New South Wales and New Guinea. The Australian Frangipani has an open form and will cast only light shade. They respond well to pruning and you can trim them if you want a tree with a denser head.

Tipuana tipu Pride of Bolivia Sometimes called Yellow Jacaranda. A fast-growing, spreading tree, with an open form casting light shade. Masses of bright yellow flowers adorn the tree in summer. Tipuana tipu fixes atmospheric Nitrogen so
