On the right road to health Philippa Mannagh talks to Dr Libby, a Holistic Nutrition Specialist, International Speaker and Author of five best-selling books. WE LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING YOUR ‘ROAD TO SUSTAINABLE WEIGHT LOSS’ SEMINAR HERE IN WHANGAREI NEXT MONTH. WHAT IS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THIS NZ TOUR? Every day I see the challenges and pain people put themselves through in the pursuit of weight loss. People who make enormous efforts with food and movement and don’t get the results they deserve. People either on diets not getting the nutrients they need to be well, energized, happy and/or slimmer, or not on the diets they think they are supposed to be on and feeling constantly guilty. People thinking they have to push themselves so hard with exercise and never feeling like they’ve done enough. It is an exhausting, miserable life when that is always in the back of your mind. I want to give people the opportunity to better understand their bodies and be free from dieting and the diet mentality, while still obtaining the health and body outcomes they desire.

WHAT PIECE OF INFORMATION DO YOU HOPE YOUR AUDIENCE WILL COME AWAY WITH AND APPLY TO THEIR LIVES ABOVE ALL ELSE? I want people to leave understanding that they need to be healthy to lose weight, and not that they need to lose weight to be healthy. I want to show people how to do this and feel a new-found freedom and enjoyment of food. The seminar is not just about weight loss though. It is about how to use body fat as a fuel and that is

information relevant to everyone for great health, energy, vitality, sleep, moods as well as how their clothes fit them.

YOU ARE NO.1 BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF 5 BOOKS WITH ANOTHER ON THE WAY. TELL US A BIT ABOUT THAT? My new book is called The Calorie Fallacy, it is due out August 11. In The Calorie Fallacy challenges the fundamentals of weight loss, and specifically the calorie equation. For a long time now people have believed that burning more calories than they consume will lead to weight loss. However in this modern world that principle does not always work for everyone. I want people to understand that what their body needs is for them to stop counting calories and to start nourishing themselves with nutrients. My book includes part of my own personal health journey as well as case studies from my last 16 years in practice.

WHAT ARE THREE NUTRITIONAL OR LIFESTYLE TIPS THAT WE COULD ALL BE PRIORITISING IN OUR LIVES? DIaphragmatic breathing: Diaphragmatic breathing is so critical to good health. My book Rushing Woman’s Syndrome goes into detail on how exactly your breath can effect your health, but in short, long, slow belly breathing allows the nervous system to be able to fully relax. When the nervous system is relaxed the body can use fat as a fuel very efficiently. Eat Real Food: When it comes to food, nature gets it right and it is potentially human intervention

that can get it so wrong. Wholefoods have the nutrients necessary to sustain life and none of the “non-food” ingredients found in many processed foods that have the potential to take away from our health. The body has the equipment (digestive enzymes) to break down real food. The same cannot always be said for ingredients in processed foods. Sleep: we can’t fight our biology. Adults need 7 to 9 hours sleep per night yet too many people compromise this to get more done. In 2012, in a country of only 4.5 million people, 680,000 prescriptions for sleeping tablets were written, demonstrating sleep is a major challenge for too many people. There are numerous reasons for this and finding yours and correcting it, can literally change your life.

IS THERE A PARTICULAR AREA OF HEALTH THAT YOU ARE MOST CONCERNED ABOUT OR THAT SPEAKS TO THE PUBLIC MORE THAN

OTHER ISSUES? I think more and more women relate to the Rushing Woman’s Syndrome concept. I also think people are done with dieting. There is a whole other way to have the health and body you want that doesn’t involves counting calories and once people understand and apply that new knowledge, their whole life transforms. It is very special to witness that happen for people and I feel honoured to guide and support people on their heath journey.

OF MINDSET IN OUR SOCIETY? There are significant changes underway. Cafes that serve only whoelfoods have started to open in NZ. I see girls, in particular, in their 20’s drinking green smoothies and taking time to prepare home cooked meals. Sure too many people are still consuming energy drinks and too much processed food but there is a growing trend among younger people to take better care of themselves. I want people to understand, that the way they feed themselves is the most basic, most fundamental way we take care of ourselves. What we eat becomes part of us, so choose wisely. e see it on TV ... Kiwis on their OE are hankering after it. Vogel’s bread is a New Zealand favourite and now, it seems, it’s more than just a sandwich or toast. A Toast of New Zealand Cafe´ toured the country recently to showcase the best Vogel’s masterpiece recipes Kiwis had to offer. And among those recipes were two gourmet delights from Northland. After calling for entries and a public vote, the top 12 were decided, including Simone Gentil’s Moroccan Spiced Pumpkin and Elizabeth Anne Denton’s Lizzy’s Fish Cakes. We talked to Simone, a schoolteacher in Whangarei about her winning recipe ... and a little bit more.

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR VOGEL'S CREATION? Being vegetarian there often aren’t many options when you go out for lunch or dinner. I have a genuine love for food and creating new recipes. I wanted to create a vegetarian meal that was a bit more exciting than the usual salad or bowl of fries you see on a lot of cafe´ menus. My partner, Paul was really supportive and encouraged me to give it a go.

RECIPE MOROCCAN SPICED PUMPKIN INGREDIENTS 1 piece of Vogel's Sunflower and Red Quinoa bread Pumpkin (diced) Moroccan Seasoning 1 Tbsp diced red onion 1 Tbsp chopped walnuts 1 Tbsp of natural yoghurt Pumpkin seeds and extra chopped walnuts to garnish Plum sauce (optional) Olive oil for roasting

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MEAL? One of my favourite places to go out for dinner is to The Old

Sprinkle Moroccan Seasoning over diced pumpkin. Roast in a small amount of olive oil, at 200c for 30 minutes or until they start to brown. Lightly toast sunflower and quinoa bread. Pour a small amount of plum sauce onto the toast and spread with a knife (optional). Add pumpkin pieces. Sprinkle walnuts and red onion over pumpkin. Top with a spoonful of natural yoghurt. Garnish with pumpkin seeds and extra chopped walnuts. Serve.

Stone Butter Factory. I love their roast vegetable and feta pizza, ginger beer on tap and the warm, friendly atmosphere. Everyone there is really down to earth.

WHAT THREE THINGS CAN YOU NOT DO WITHOUT? Travel, the beach and my pets.

After your normal skincare regime, apply L'Ore´al Paris Age Perfect Cell Renewal Serum. Allow skin to absorb the serum for five minutes.

- Prep and prime the skin using L’Ore´al Paris Lumi Magique Pure Light Primer around the cheekbones as a base.

Apply L’Oreal Paris NutriLift Gold Foundation by starting at the centre of the face and working out wide.

To mask under-eye circles, dab L’Oreal Paris Lumi Magique Highlighter Pen under the eyes, on the bridge of the nose and along the cheekbones. Use a patting motion to blend into the skin. Be sure to use a tone that is one or two shades lighter than your foundation

Sweep L’Ore´al Paris True Match Blush in Sandalwood over the cheekbones towards the temples. Conceal the eye lids with L’Oreal Paris True Match Concealer. The concealer can be a shade that matches the lid or slightly lighter. Dab the concealer gently, then blend into the skin. This will help to hold eyeshadow colour. Using L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Les Ombres in Incredible Grey, apply the grey shade lightly over the entire lid and into the top eye crease (the top of the eye socket). Smudge the outer edge of the eyeshadow to give a smoky effect. Lightly dust the grey shade again under the lower lash line.

YOU WILL NEED:

Take L’Ore´al Paris SuperLiner Gel Matic Eyeliner and create a thin line along the roots of the lower lashes.

Curl lashes then apply two coats of L’Ore´al Paris Volume Million Lashes Mascara.

Finish the look with a slick of L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Lipstick in Blush in Plum.

o, you’re standing in front of your wardrobe staring at a blank space. The deadline to get out of the house is closing in on you; you’re struggling to choose something to wear when you should be in the final dressing stages. As you stand there, trying to create an outfit, insecurity creeps in. You see yourself changing in front of your very own eyes, from confident to self-conscious. Gloominess sets in. Sound familiar? I’m not ashamed to say that one of my favorite places to hang out is inside a wardrobe! It’s an interesting element of my job as a Stylist to assist people in transforming wardrobes into inspiring spaces. We all know that being surrounded by clutter is a giant energy vampire along with having a cluttered and disorganized wardrobe. In fact, most people only wear 30 per cent of their wardrobe! Staggering statistics sadly enough. How much does this cost you emotionally, psychologically and financially? My bet is it’s more than you might imagine! There are so many hidden costs

in not having an organized wardrobe. Be inspired. Get organized with these easy tips.

START AT THE BEGINNING

Try everything on before you return it to the wardrobe, ensuring you are still inspired by these pieces and they still add value in your life. Make piles for repairs, dry-cleaning, charity and trade-me.

I am naturally casual. I love jeans. I want every woman I see to look the best they can in a pair of jeans. We live in Northland. Jeans are part of our culture. Whether it’s summer, winter, autumn, spring ... jeans, jeans, jeans. They speak a million languages and are always a part of every season’s fashion trends. This summer the faded denim is huge in Europe ... and of course we follow. There is a skinny legging style that reeks comfort and sloppy sweater looks. I’m the colour girl. I love colour and what better season to experiment with it than summer. I love florals and bright block prints with snazzy contrasts especially in shift dresses and tops – anything that reminds me of summer and surf and tropical islands. And there’s heaps of strong colour around this spring, ‘must haves’ like fluro citrus and tangerine blended with white, mango,

multi shades of blue and green and dare I say it yellow – canary yellow. Along with colour I have a passion for stripes — perhaps I was a sailor in a past life. Pin stripes in denim jeans, shorts and straight cotton skirts. Dramatic black and white stripes, horizontal, diagonal or vertically striped wow jackets tossed over block tops of lime or turquoise. So sharp and such a great way to lift a mundane ‘separates’ look. Tending to not want to ‘stand out’ in evening wear [until the third glass of wine], I opt for a less dramatic after five option than Cheryl. This summer I’m either going for the pants suit reminds me of my raw silk number in the 1987s, which I’ll wear with drop dead high shoes, so I look 5 kilos slimmer with a flowing over shirt to camouflage my derriere. Otherwise I’d go for the understated elegance of Joseph Ribkoff – he just knows how to design clothes. So from the colour, pattern, texture girl — roll on spring!

Men ‘feel’ as much as women do Men are more emotional than women, despite their protestations to the contrary, a British experiment has found. Men experience greater levels of emotion than women when presented with heart-warming material, according to the study for Royal Mail, which has used the findings to produce a “definitive” list of phrases for a successful Father’s Day card. A group of 15 fathers and 15 mothers were shown images and videos categorised as blissful, funny, exciting and heart-warming, such as a soldier returning from service and reuniting with his daughter, while their physiological reactions were measured using skin conductance electrodes. Men demonstrated a marginally higher emotional reaction to the blissful, funny and exciting content compared to the women but responded twice as strongly to heart-warming content. A questionnaire found that although men reported feeling less emotion than the women, their physiological changes showed they felt emotion more strongly. Mindlab founder and chairman Dr David Lewis said: “Gender stereotypes about men being stoic and women being emotional are reinforced by our day-today consumption of media and our social interactions. We tend to oversimplify and exaggerate the perceived differences between men and women and are more likely to focus on evidence that supports our stereotypes.

Researchers are starting to show that a bacterial imbalance in the gut can cause mental health problems, says Dr Leila Masson, who specialises in treating children on the autistic spectrum. Although an imbalance does not cause autism, getting the balance right can help reduce some of the anguish. “I have repeatedly seen autistic children become more settled and less anxious when this imbalance is resolved,” says the New Zealand pediatrician.“We are not talking about curing autism. It is about treating some of the problems that come with it.” She says that in the past, agitation was seen as a symptom of autism. “Now we know it is caused by painful inflammation of the

gut. If you reduce the pain, children sleep better and are calmer. Getting the gut flora balance right will help all autistic children, no matter where they are on the spectrum, she says. “In fact, it will help all children, whether or not they are autistic.” Dr Masson believes one way of improving the balance is to eat traditional fermented foods such as sauerkraut. People can also take commercial probiotics or eat natural unsweetened yoghurt with a good count of probiotics. “The other way of improving gut flora is to eat a diet of unprocessed food, whole grains and vegetables and fruit. Physical appearance and attractiveness are closely linked to acceptance in teenagers, so anything that affects how you look can be particularly difficult to cope with during the teenage years and can cause much distress even if, to us, it just looks like a little pimple. To an overemotional teenager it’s a disaster. Certain vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin A, C, E and zinc, along with the essential fatty acid, Omega 3, may help improve the appearance the skin and minimize the eruption of acne. Don’t forget that the skin breathes. Dust, grime, oils and pollutants can clog the skin’s pores and exacerbate existing acne. Teens should wash their faces thoroughly, but gently, twice a day. Over washing, or excessive scrubbing can make acne worse. Using a natural soap containing sulphur can be very beneficial

Hummus — Shlomo’s love for life B

ustling markets filled with exotic aromas, raucous stall-holders calling to each other across colourful mounds of dried fruits and spices, morning crowds jostling for space in front of their favourite merchants while laughing children chase each other through the narrow streets... It was in this environment that Shlomo Elisar, owner of the Fat Camel Cafe´ in Quality Street, first learnt to make his own hummus. From a young age Shlomo was a regular at one of Israel’s best hummus houses; “Caf HaZahav” which translates to “The Golden Spoon”. Returning again and again he was fascinated to watch the hummus being made in front of him. “I learnt from the best” he says. For Shlomo hummus is a tradition. It is his mother, his childhood, his home country, his love for life. It is Israel, it is his heritage – and sharing this love is what prompted his first foray into the Auckland restaurant scene, back in 1989. Today, with his lovely wife Nomi and their three kiwi-born kids, Shlomo is happy to call Waipu his home: and his popular eatery The Fat Camel, superbly managed by the

KEEP IT SIMPLE There aren’t many ingredients in hummus, and it’s that way for a reason: don’t start adding millions of flavours until you have mastered the original! Then you can experiment...

CHOOSE THE RIGHT TAHINI! You must use hulled tahini (without the skin) – like rice, tahini can come with skin or without – check the label; non hulled will taste more like peanut butter than hummus!

INGREDIENTS (Serving for 4-5 guests) 200g dried chickpeas (will swell once soaked) 200g Tahini 200ml water 70ml Olive Oil 1 Lemon 1⁄2 tspn Salt

CHICKPEAS (or hummus in Hebrew) Soak chickpeas overnight in

plenty of water. When you are ready, drain and rinse well, then pop them into a pot covering them with plenty of water as they will still be absorbing more as they cook. Bring to a boil then reduce heat, cooking on low until chickpeas are nice and soft. This may take about 1.5 hours. When cooked, drain and rinse.

MAKE HUMMUS Mash the chickpeas, I like to use a potato masher and mash it by hand, but a blender or food processor will do a great job too. Add to mash, 200gm of hulled Tahini and mix. Slowly add the water as you mix, until you have a nice firm paste. Add lemon juice, olive oil and salt to taste and mix until you have a nice creamy hummus paste! Traditionally, we keep aside a couple of spoonfuls of the whole cooked chickpeas to place on top of the plated hummus, with a garnish of parsley, a sprinkle of paprika and a splash of olive oil. Traditionally served with Pita Bread. Now you are ready to eat! bon appetite, or as we say in Israel, bite´ avon! Hummus keeps in the fridge for up to 5 days. Love to see you at the Fat Camel. Slice of south in north

C

atch a glimpse of Grant and Jan Tipling’s home at Matakana, and you could be forgiven for thinking you were in Central Otago. Of course the subtropical garden and the proximity to the coast give it away, but the house itself has all the hallmarks of a southern country lodge. Lots of stone, schist, timber and red corrugated iron outside, and massive fireplaces, deer heads and antlers inside, mark this as the home of an enthusiastic hunter whose stamping ground has been the best hunting spots in the south island. And that’s where Grant and Jan are off to next, even though leaving the house will be a wrench. If they could pick it up the house and relocate it to Central Otago, they would. When they’d finished the build, Grant found himself at more of a loose end than he liked, so after some travel, the subject of whether they might sell the property and move south came up for discussion. But having put so much into the house, it took three years of soulsearching to decide. It was a big decision because Grant was brought up in Matakana and had owned the land for 15 years before deciding to build on it. “We were farming in Taranaki but it had always been my plan to retire here,” he says. The plan was advanced when he saw a design in an architecture magazine of a

house designed by Noel Lane at Snells Beach. It crystallised what he wanted. “It was much bigger and grander than what we had in mind so we worked out our own, downsized version,” he says. The design appealed because it had the feeling of a tent fly and having spent a lot of time in tents when he was a professional hunter, Grant was attracted to the concept. “But we still wanted big spaces, hence the 9m stud.” They had a Northland architect to draw up their design, and Grant took on the role of project manager, so he knows the house inside out. It has links to Taranaki in that much of the timber was milled on the couple’s farm there and brought up to Matakana. They also collected some old jarrah power poles to use in the design. “Every piece of timber was milled for a specific purpose,” Grant says. Thoughtfully, the house was designed to accommodate the ever- changing needs of family. It has separate living spaces to cater firstly a family with teenagers, and later the possibility of a family with elderly parents. The main living area is open plan and incorporates a sleek, contemporary kitchen with

marble benches and twin ovens. The warm tones of the floor and benches, as well as country touches like the old-fashioned clock, give it a touch of country. And there’s no mistaking the country style in the main living area, where colonial timber furniture shares space with tan leather sofas, under a spectacular antler chandelier hanging from the pitched timber ceiling. Polished concrete floors downstairs and the interior stonework of the chimneys and an internal stone wall have a twin purpose. As well as contributing to the lodge theme, they provide passive solar heating and Grant says the underfloor heating is very rarely turned on. Clever design keeps the midsummer sun out but lets the winter sun in so it’s comfortable all year round. Upstairs, beautiful saligna flooring and sarked ceilings add a feeling of warmth to the bedrooms. Yet this is also the perfect summer house, built right on the river with riparian rights. The landscaped garden is flat and planted in palms, cycads and natives. Sweeping lawns stretch down to the river, where the jetty provides the perfect spot from which to fish, jump into the river, launch kayaks, or just relax into the view.

Kiwis are keeping their beds too long O

ver the course of a lifetime, the average person will spend one third of it in bed sleeping. Good healthy sleep is vital to heal and re-vitalise your body. As our lives get busier, we're pushing our days out longer and setting our alarm clocks earlier to cram more into our lives. Something has to give and every day I see people's health and energy levels suffering due to poor sleep. Sleep deprivation can have profound effects on your general wellbeing. It can contribute to stress, reduced mental and physical performance, mood swings, aches and pains, and premature aging along with a number of health risks including obesity. Sleep plays a vital role in restoring and healing the body, so when you are not sleeping well - your health takes a huge hit. TOP TIPS: DON’T Don’t drink caffeinated drinks — coffee, tea, soft drinks. Don’t eat spicy or fatty foods before bed, these are likely to give you indigestion Don’t drink too much alcohol before bed. You’ll drop off into a deep sleep for an hour but that’s it ... tossing and turning for the rest of the night. Don’t clock watch, in fact turn it around. If you wake and look at the time you;re going to spend the next half hour doing the maths about how sleep you;re not going to get. Don’t overstimulate your brain on computer games or TV. Like babies, if we get overstimulated we can’t get off to sleep and get grumpy. Don’t rely on sleeping pills. They will only work for so long.

DO Go to bed at the same time each night and get up at the same time each morning. This routine helps maintain a healthy sleep cycle. Reserve your bedroom for sleep .. no TVs or computers. Get a new pillow. If you have had your old one for a while there are sure to be dust mites. Also your pillow is likely to have squashed flat. Get something fluffy and fancy! Grab some sun if you can. Not only does it give our bodies mood-boosting vitamin D, it also helps us sleep better. Exercise daily so so your muscles will be able to relax more easily at night. If you’re going to plant a hedge why not make it a bit out of the ordinary. Griselinia and Pittosporum hedges have their place, and I'm not saying there’s anything wrong with them, but if you want a splash of colour why not try one of the following plants instead. Photinia ‘Red Robin’ – this tree makes a wonderful colourful hedge and can be kept trimmed to 1-3m tall. It has nice glossy dark green leaves, and after it is trimmed all the new growth comes through a lovely bright red. It looks stunning. It is quite quick growing with up to 1m a year growth in good conditions. It is reasonably hardy and colours up best in full sun. Leptospermum ‘Copper Sheen’ – This Australian tea tree has lovely white flowers and a nice burgundy colour to the leaves. It will grow into a small tree of about 4 x 3m if left to its own devices, but

trims to a nice hedge of about 2-3m. As it is so quick growing you may need to trim this up to 3 times a year to keep it tidy. As the leaves are quite small it should be grown as a wide hedge, at least 1-1.5m, this will be enough for privacy and as a wind break. Syzigium australe Variegated or variegated lilly pilly — this tree is very quick growing yet trims well to form a compact hedge. The leaves are variegated, with the new growth coming through pink and then red, changing to dark glossy green and white as it ages. . Hedges 2-3m tall and less than 1m wide can be achieved with regular trimming. Reasonably hardy. Lophomyrtus ‘Red Dragon’ and Lophomyrtus ‘Kathryn’ – These native shrubs have a beautiful burgundy red colour to them. They are slower growing than those previously mentioned and only reach 2 – 2.5m in height so are good if you don’t want to be trimming as often. They prefer sunny, average to dry conditions.

Macadamia nuts have a sweet taste and are a rich source of energy. They contain a number of health-benefiting minerals, vitamins, antioxidants and nutrients. 100 gms of macadamia will give you 23% of your dailyrecommended levels of dietary fibre and being gluten free it is one of the popular ingredients in gluten free products. The nuts are a rich source of mono-unsaturated fat, lowering the bad cholesterol while increasing the good cholesterol. Macadamias are an excellent source of minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese and zinc. They are rich in many important B-complex vitamins. Vitamin B-6 for example helps reduce symptoms of forgetfulness, moodiness, irritability, bloating and anxiety. They contain small amounts of vitamin A, and vitamin E. Macadamia trees are available at Alter-Natives Nursery. The varieties we have are Maroochy and Beaumont and are best planted together, as Beaumont is partially self fertile but will crop heavier when crossed with Maroochy.

One of the great things about New Zealand native shrubs is that they can be used in a number of different ways. From revegetation of wetland river sides and unproductive land, using species like manuka (Leptospermum scoparium), mirror plant (Coprosma repens), and five finger (Pseudopanax arboreus). To using native plants in the home garden, with each species having varieties that add colour and texture. Manuka have many varieties differing in size, colour of leaves, and the colour of their flowers. With flowers ranging from pale pink to deep red, green and burgundy foliage, single and double blooms and some that are prolific flowerers (trees covered trunk to tip), they are a perfect addition to your garden. Mirror plants do not have the

fancy flowers but their foliage is a lovely texture with round glossy green leaves. These are a large shrub and there is a prostrate variety as well called Coprosma ‘Poor Knights’.

rior to its release, Mazda New Zealand sent out a raft of information on the new Mazda3. While I was well prepared for its concept and style, nothing could have prepared me for its presence when I first saw it, especially in the test car’s case, which was painted in a colour Mazda labels soul red. It is a $250 option but it really looks the part. The new Mazda3 is sleek, sporty and is a shape that is well distant to the raft of mid-size sedans and hatchbacks which ply the mainstream market. If you envisage the new Mazda6 and take stock of its shape, the smaller Mazda3 looks similar, they are both elegant designs which stand out for their flair. As before, the Mazda3 is available here in two body styles – hatch and sedan – and there is a choice of two Skyactive engines, 2-litre and 2.5-litre. The ninemodel range lists from $32,795 to $47,495 for the SP25 Limited. I’m scheduled for three Mazda3 drives, the first off the rank was the SP25 Ltd sedan and it made a major impression on me, it borders on the sports sedan category along with the practicality we have come to expect from the Mazda3. I’ve long rated Mazda highly as a car maker, its attention to detail and engineering prowess is something I’ve often commented upon over the years and the SP25 is a stunning car, it endears itself with an involving driving feel and high comfort for all on board. And it is also a state-of-the-art car with comprehensive control systems and displays which you ordinarily wouldn’t find on a car of this class. A centre console dial navigates the infotainment and communication systems, along with GPS and the view from a reversing camera. The information is screened on a large central display and it, along with other facia displays, provides the driver with a raft of readouts to make each journey controlled and safe. Which brings me to another point, the SP25 is jam-packed with safety kit. According to the media

Put simply, it is a range of electronic and mechanical components which are engineered to mitigate collisions, some are active such as smart brake support and city brake support which applies braking pressure if a collision appears imminent, while other features such as rear cross traffic alert and blind spot monitoring are essentially

warning devices. Together the driver can quickly build confidence in the car, it is clever but such are the chassis dynamics that the electronics aren’t relied

upon. Mazda hasn’t lost sight of the engineering elements which go the distance in terms of refinement and sophistication; the rear suspension, especially, is a fully independent multiplelink type which promotes an unrestricted handling feel and control over the bumps doesn’t upset in-cabin comfort. I delighted in the SP25’s ability in both tight and open flowing corners. It has control

and balance in a corner which other so-called sports sedans should be envious of. Providing the grip in the first instance are sport specification Dunlop tyres (215/45 x 18in) and they send positive information back to the driver, the steering is sharp, directional and accurate. Turn-in is precise and composure and control into a corner is a handling strong point. Under the bonnet sits an engine which is pretty much a carryover from the last series. I’ve written a lot about Mazda’s Skyactive engine technology, it is a programme developed to enhance fuel economy along with performance akin to vehicle type, Skyactive also includes i-Stop which shuts the engine off at idle. The SP25 is rated with a sixlitre per 100km (47mpg) combined cycle average and it

also gets high power outputs of 138kW and 250Nm both at a good point in the rev band – 5700rpm and 3250rpm respectively. A Queen’s Birthday weekend with the test car listed fuel usage figures not that far distant to Mazda’s claim with 7.2l/100km (39mpg) consistently on display along with a 6l/100km figure at 100km/h on the highway (engine speed just 2000rpm). And, the SP25 is quick, that strong torque figure provides instant acceleration and surge through the mid-range, it will reach 100km/h from a standstill in 7.8sec and lunge through a highway overtake in 5.1sec. The test car was fitted with automatic transmission, I’m hoping for an SP25 manual drive later but the six-speed auto is a honey in terms of shift quality and ratio selection. There are manual paddles if you like taking control of your own shifts, but I found that when left to its own devices the electronic mapping systems never left me at a point when the gearing was too tall or too low. Along with the safety and control items I mentioned earlier, the SP25 also gets specification features such as head-up display, radar cruise control and electric sunroof. It is a car where you get a lot for your money, and even though it sits a little more expensive than some other models in this sector, there is a high value aspect, not to mention the wonderful driving experience and the looks which go with it. The SP25 provided me with one of the great drives so far for 2014, it is a class act. But if you look at Mazda as a company and what they have produced over the years in terms of performance cars, it’s no wonder the new ‘3’ is a standout, I’m not at all surprised. I simply can’t wait to get into the other variants.

Mural Magic and Epic Modernism T here has long been a tradition of muralmaking across Northland. And in the central North Island, the rural town of KatiKati has even branded itself the mural capital of New Zealand! However, this is a tradition that reaches back only a couple of generations, at least in terms of Western Art history in Aotearoa. Indeed, Maori have a much longer history of making huge narrative and human scale art in their wharenui, never emulated in our colonial or modernist art. New Zealand art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (until Colin McCahon’s seminal ‘Northland Panels’ in 1958) was decidedly domestic in scale. Some colonial artists, of course created large histrionic, prestige paintings in the tradition of the European arts academies Annual Exhibitions. But even these were hardly cinematic in scope in the way we now expect. Huge

‘drive by paintings’ in smalltown New Zealand and the metropolitan centres, are now just part of the cultural landscape we have come to accept. Mural history stretches back to Minoan culture in Crete, and Etruscan and of course Roman murals are justly famous. Think of Pompeii and we instantly think – murals and human disaster. This tradition didn’t survive the next thousand years, and it is not until the midtwentieth century that Manhattan modernism and Mexican modernism made murals powerful statements of political unrest and activism. Diego Rivera, Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock repositioned the scale of art and took it out of its framework – literally. Here in Northland, I have recently discovered one of the most unheralded, yet prolific muralists of our time. John Foster was a farmer and obsessively dedicated artist

throughout his life. I recently met one of his daughters, Kath, who is patiently cataloguing her late father’s entire opus of work stored in the District. Foster created massive murals, some up to 20 metres in length, and there remain 15 of these still in storage, and very rarely seen. He was a masterful printmaker, and the family has catalogued over 13,000 woodcuts, lithographs and etchings so far! Yes 13,000! Yet we know so little about his work. While a young John Foster was finishing High School, Colin McCahon was in Northland too. He had visited the United States on an arts study grant to see American expressionist painting and was overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the new idiom and its power to connect, by freeing the art from frames and ‘oversizing’ the imagery. There was a new sense of almost being able to walk right into a painting. On returning, his first attempt at a New Zealand genre was the now-famous ‘Northland

Panels’. This iconic mural work of three canvas panels is now in the Te Papa Tongarewa collection and on display for the first time in many, many years at the Auckland Art Gallery this month. They were to change our art history - such was McCahon’s impact. I am currently negotiating for these panels to finally come home, to visit Northland in the very near future, as part of the Te Papa Wall project at WAM. John Foster was later to study art at Elam, with Colin McCahon, and Sir Toss Woollaston and he was admired as an artist by many contemporary New Zealand artists like Michael Illingworth. The influence of these artists can be seen in Foster’s work, but what is exciting about this wonderful trove of art for me, is the vivacity and freshness of his ‘open-skies’ but introspective vision of the world. The really are something special and unique to Northland art history.

Foster was not only daily working and toiling the landscape McCahon canonized, he was painting it too, with raw and very real insight. One of the murals for instance is ‘Cattle Sale Mural, Kauri’ 1978 a massive 9.6m ( 32 feet) oil on hardboard mural which took years to create, and archives the activities of the Kauri Sale Yards, north of Whangarei. Some of these farming life woodcuts and another huge mural created on his farm near Te Hana were published by the Department of Education in 1985 as a Schools Journal. The art museum will be re-creating this schools journal ‘Four Seasons on the Farm’ as an exhibition with the mural (illustrated) and 32 of the original prints from the book. This will be a stunning exhibition in March 2015, designed specially for school children (with an education resource pack) and adults alike. — Scott Pothan

The best part about experiencing the third trimester during winter, is the hibernation. Baggy pyjama pants (I swore I wouldn’t), toasty fires, comfort food, cosy movie nights and hot cups of tea. I carried my last two babies over the spring and summer months and I have to say, this is a right treat. I get to hide my ever growing belly with coats and scarves while time ticks by and my movements start to slow. I don’t feel like I am missing out on a social life, as everyone else is staying put this time of year also. Days are short and savoured, this is when I go into my ‘creative cave’

every year and pump out some soul writing. This winter, it is working in advance to prepare business to tick over just nicely for those times when my eye balls may be falling out of my head and my coffee is going cold. With some forward planning I am feeling confident this will not be as hard to juggle as I first thought… it is nice to embrace some positive thinking. Recently, Debbie Mayo- Smith taught me about the importance of out-sourcing. I hold onto this tightly and see it as my light at the end of the three-monthnewborn tunnel. I have created a ‘when baby here’ folder filled with family events, reviews and opinions to share, my training notes are also coming along nicely to get some

Hunting and gathering — one of life’s lessons

To be honest, fishing is not this mum’s cup of tea. However, when the family date requests came in thick and fast each week to go fishing, at some stage I had to follow through. Dad and daughter set off to buy some squid for the bait and soon we were on our way to the Onerahi wharf. Other fishermen sat and quietly waited for the fish to bite, patiently letting the time pass by as they hoped for just one tug on the line. Kids ran up and down the wharf as they waited for their fathers and coats were promptly gathered as the weather changed her mind on what she wanted to

provide for the day. After setting up on our side of the wharf, the line was in and the wait was on. I wondered how long this date would remain exciting until it turned to food requests and boredom. Miss seven was first. She waited, waited and waited…not one tug. Master five, with ants in his pants today, finally offered to give it a go. Someone else beside us packed up and headed off, sharing that he had been waiting an hour for nothing. The littlest Mannagh threw in his line. No more than 10 seconds later the line started to pull!

It gave little time for him to experience the patience of the fishing game, as dad helped reel them in. The line revealed three

sprats jumping all over the place much to Miss seven’s surprise and a little bit of horror. The kids watched excitedly as they observed the fish and chose their ‘favourites’. “Big eyes is my fish,” claimed Miss seven.

A true fishing class doesn’t stop there. We drove home where dad showed them the ins and outs so to speak of gutting a fish and preparing it to eat… Jamie Oliver styles. From ocean to plate, accompanied by chips, this was a fun life lesson to share on the weekend. Again, mum not a fan of fish served up this way (still looking at me) but I pretended to be impressed and amazed. I did however, watch with delight as my children indulged in what they had gathered themselves and now knew a bit more on the circle of life.

JO DANILO escaped to Northland from wintry England three years ago and finds the Kiwi way of life refreshingly different. She shares with SAVVY readers the things that make her stop and smile. In 1992, in a raging storm, a container filled with 28,000 rubber ducks fell into the Pacific Ocean. Even now, rubber ducks are still washing up on beaches all over the world, as far away as Scotland , Alaska and South America. The study of their epic travels has apparently revolutionised our understanding of the world’s currents. I love visiting beaches after a storm has blown through. The maelstrom of rolling waves pulls up all sorts of strange things and throws them out onto the sand. You never know what you’re going to find. Here are a few of my favourite discoveries... A summer storm brought millions of tiny jelly balls to the shore at Matauri Bay, and made the beach glisten. When you swam, you could feel the little, round globules against your hands with every stroke. It seems these jelly balls, otherwise known as ‘salp’ are a common occurrence worldwide, and help combat global warming, but nobody on the beach that day had a clue what they were. At Takou Bay, the day after a storm, there were dozens of tiny,

A serving of cheese is about thumb-size, and for snack foods, think a handful.)This system works no matter what your child's age — because the hand grows as they, and their appetite, does.

Kids usually want to eat quickly so that they can get going again. ■ Keep servings small. ■ Use thin sliced bread, wraps, pita pockets etc ■ Don’t overdo the amount of sandwich filling. ■ Avoid soggy sandwiches by keeping spreads to a minimum and removing seeds from tomatoes or cucumber ■ Remember portion size refers to fruit as well, peeled and cut into bite size pieces makes it easier to handle

I went, in the other day, to Omak Meats, Kamo Rd to buy some of their Thai coated chicken tenderloins , they are a great buy at $15.99 per kg and while there and as I usually do, asked the question - so what could I do with these and how long would you cook them for? happily serve 4; chop up into bite size pieces and fry them in a little oil to cook (approx 8 – 10mins) obviously the more you have the longer it takes but don’t overcook cause they will dry out. In the meantime chop up some cabbage or bok choy, silverbeet, red onion, mushrooms, garlic, sliced carrot, red peppers (when they’re not so expensive) and whatever other veges you like. In a separate pan add some oil and fry up onion, mushrooms and carrot til onion begins to soften add to this the cabbage and silver beet and let it cook away stirring continually to avoid anything sticking on the bottom. Get a packet of Udon noodle for around $2 and place them in boiling water to soften and separate. Add them to the stirfry vegetable mix through along with the chicken. You could add a bit of soya or teriyaki sauce to taste and your meal is done. If you like you can sprinkle sesame seeds over. So for around
