Welcome
WOMENS
I
It’s been around a dozen years since I was in this spot. Back then, in my twenties, I was on the cusp of one of life’s best journeys – parenthood. But you know one of the next best things I ever did? A musical theatre show. The high from that is indescribable, not to mention addictive, as Craig Robertson, who we feature this month, attests. Read his story about how the former radio announcer’s path has evolved through following his passion. Also this month, we unveil the project of a talented group of Whangarei creative professionals. The outcome is pretty classy and unique – what do you think? Speaking of evolution earlier, Savvy has progressed during my 12-year full circuit and if you aren’t already following our Facebook page – please do – we welcome feedback and story ideas. After-all, it’s about showcasing our wonderful locals and there are many out there! Happy reading and see you next month.

Collaboration of possibility other than Pinterest WORDS BY JODI FRASER-BRYANT
W
hat do you get when a local florist, photographer, antique dealer and events specialist collaborate their talents and think outside the box? A stunning visual array of vintage creativity unlike anything Northlanders have seen. Lisa Heenan of Cheers Party Hire has been in the industry for 11 years since noticing a gap in the hire market and, over the years, has built up an impressive show room of options for her customers. However, while trawling through her partner Hamish Wain’s Cowboy Junkies Antiques and Collectables shop, her keen eye for quirky props lead to ideas which swayed from the usual fairy lights and rustic trends. Soon she had her close industry colleagues – Amy Condon of Keepsake Bouquets and Dawn Dutton of Dawn Dutton Photography – on board and, together with Hamish, the four business owners combined their creative strengths to produce a collection of remarkably unique images. “I thought wouldn’t it be good to showcase what you can bring out of a small town with people who are top of the industry,” explains Lisa, who provides and sources settings for events such as weddings, school balls, baby showers and corporate functions. “This was a collaboration of possibility to show that you don’t just have to stick to what’s on pinterest.” The three-day shoot was staged at Cowboy Junkies Antiques

PHOTOS BY DAWN DUTTON and Collectables, which proved the perfect backdrop. Hamish, a former prop maker and set dresser in the movie industry, had converted it to resemble a well-loved villa stuffed with a plethora of his collected treasures. He was happy to showcase a range of these as props, such a painting, chair, telephone and even taxidermy. “The shop has been used to shoot music videos and short films so using it as a location for a fashion shoot seemed like a natural progression. The antiques as props were fun to use as they invoked a sense of nostalgia, grace and style, while remaining relevant in a modern world setting.” While, Lisa carried out make-up on the local models, who were dressed in feather creations by Cheers employee and owner of My Lemonade Stand Kayleigh and hair was done by Dan Matene of Dan Blk Creative, Amy assembled and staged the floral arrangements. With over 20 years in the floristry industry, Amy specialises in silk, flax and vintage displays both nationally and internationally, as well as fresh flowers throughout Northland for events, ranging from weddings to high-profile international functions. The photo shoot styling involved hair slides, crowns, bouquets, foliage, large venue arrangements and table garlands made from a combination of silk, fresh, dried and ‘verge’ flowers – fresh roadside weeds and grass seeds.
At Cheers, we are dedicated to providing you with top quality hire products at affordable prices and have an extensive range of items available. We can also deliver and dress your event for you. We provide items suitable for parties, weddings, conferences, functions and all events. All of our glassware is hand polished and our linen is professionally cleaned and ironed! OUR PEOPLE “It was exciting to be let loose to do whatever,” she says. “There were no boundaries so we were free to let our imaginations go wild.” There to capture the scene, with a dark, dingy, vintagey underground mood, was multi-award winning wedding and portrait photographer Dawn Dutton. “I love my job but this personal project enabled me to go into my deeper, darker self and really push boundaries. The setting inside was so dark that I was really having to push my camera to the limit and add light to it and I had to draw upon all of my knowledge and experience for this particular one.” Dawn says, while the rest of the team had full styling control, it was up to her to create the mood and bring all the elements together to make the images pleasing to the eye. “I am quite a raw photographer and don’t do a lot of Photoshopping so will spend a lot of time trying to get it right in camera. For example, there’s certain ways a woman can bend her hand which will either make or break a photo.” The team were pleased with the result and, with these striking images now gracing their portfolios, along with the entrance wall to Lisa’s business premises, she is hoping it will open the minds’ of clients. “It’s high-end vintage and quite vogueish,” she describes. “I don’t think there has been anything like this in Northland before. There are some beautiful things out there and a lot of talent and we’re really just showcasing what we can do, as well as being open to new ideas. There may be certain aspects that people will choose from each photo or they might use them for inspiration.”

OUR PEOPLE
From car karaoke to musical theatre stage BY JODI FRASER-BRYANT
C
raig Robertson is a talented man, especially when it comes to the senses: his profession is a dispensing optician but his true passion lies in honing new sounds from his vocal chords. The former radio announcer – locals will remember him as half the Classic Hits Northland breakfast radio team Craig and Jax – was involved in broadcasting for 20 years before re-training as a dispensing optician and purchasing Visualeyez Boutique Optometrists in Whangarei. That was five years ago, when pursuing his career in radio entailed uprooting his young family and leaving behind their beloved Northland. “I enjoy the challenge of managing a small business but continue to indulge my love of performance by recording commercial voice-acting sessions for international clients from my home studio and pretending to be an actor who can hold tune and dance a little bit,” says the quirky father of two. Craig is being modest. He recently held one of the lead roles in Whangarei’s hugely popular Mamma Mia show. In fact, three of his family members were involved. Starring alongside her dad was 18-year-old Phoebe, showcasing her talent for singing, dancing and acting. The Year 13 Whangarei Girls High School music prefect began singing as soon as she could form words, remembers Craig. “When she started singing along to The Wiggles songs note-perfect at the age of three, her mother and I realised she might have a talent.” Phoebe began lessons at seven and has been tutored by Joan Kennaway since she was nine. Blessed with a good musical ear and a ‘sensational’ memory for lyrics, Joan inspired her to take in young singing students of her own. “She has received glowing feedback from adjudicators over the years,” says her proud dad. “Achieving many first places and twice gaining the highest individual mark for girls 16 years and under. This year she will compete as an adult for the first time.” In 2015 she accepted a place as an alto in the New Zealand Secondary Students Choir. The two-year commitment required both national and international travel. Further, Phoebe recently passed her advanced certificate Trinity College singing exam with a distinction result of 97 per cent. Behind the scenes of Mamma Mia, Phoebe’s mum and Craig’s wife Rachael was working hard managing the eyepopping costumes. “I’m immensely proud of Rachael, alongside her job as deputy principal of a primary school, she capably managed, not only the costumes, but also the hair and
make-up development. All this while being part of a busy household, parenting two teenagers and managing an unpredictable husband. Rachael has always had a talent for design and enjoys dressmaking and tailoring. She would love to have the chance to design the wardrobe for a television series or movie, particularly if it was set in the early 20th century.” When the parents aren’t working, you’ll find them on the side-line watching their son Maxwell, 15, play soccer. “During our countless hours rehearsing for Mamma Mia, Maxwell has had to endure some lonely days without us. We have no family in Whangarei, so God bless our extended whanau of friends who volunteered to care for him while we were absent. He plays representative football for Northland, so we were lucky our mates could get him home from training.” Although he has several plays and now two musicals under his belt, along with his continuous ‘acting’ in his time as a broadcaster, Craig is hoping some of his fellow cast member’s well-trained Opera North skills will have rubbed off on him. “I was really honoured to be amongst such a talented bunch of singers in Mamma Mia. Up until now, my best vocal performances have been singing along to Billy Joel songs in the car. When I was a kid I used to listen to The Goon Show. I idolised Peter Sellers and Spike Milligan and simply wanted to do what they did, so I developed my skill for mimicry, accents and character voices, which is why I steered toward a radio career. Craig still has the creative outlet of his voice-work and theatre roles and intentionally seeks out quirky characters. Following closing night of Mamma Mia, the Robertson family were exhausted. However, there’s no rest for this family. Phoebe returned to school rehearsals for her drama show while investigating studying musical theatre and arts next year. The rest of the family were Palmerston Northbound with Max’s rep futsal team, before returning to their day jobs, with Rachael creating costumes for the Matarau School production Pinocchio. Craig is itching to get back into his studio and record more vocal work, while rehearsing with Phoebe for the Opera North daffodil day fundraising concert. Following his recent musical experience, Craig, the regular MC for Opera North, now has the confidence to join the chorus as well. “Outside of family, Mamma Mia is the most rewarding thing I have done and I was absolutely thrilled that I got to share a stage with Phoebe before she sets out to make a life for herself next year. I am looking forward to sharing a stage with her again, and hope to do more musicals in future.”

Look your on the big day Want to look elegant and grace at your children’s wedding? Polwarth Design is your one stop destination for special occasions. The dress, the jacket, the fascinator, the shoes and the accessories all under one roof… Cheryl, Karen and the friendly team have a wealth of experience in dressing Mothers of the bride – whatever your style is, we will have you covered!
It’s the bride’s day… KAREN MATICH – POLWARTH DESIGN
S
o how do you decide on that outfit, probably the most important one you’ll buy since getting married yourself, no matter how many ‘mother of’ experiences you’ve had? Every wedding is a unique occasion, with so many challenging apparel needs, expectations and aspirations, it’s a wonder anyone turns up wearing anything at all…it’s a church wedding and the bridesmaids are wearing navy. I can’t do red because the bride’s mother’s wearing that. I suit blue but I wore that to my son’s wedding. I’d like something that I can wear again… not too mother of the bride-ish…it has to have sleeves though, to cover my fat arms…and a V neckline as I’m too big in the boobs for those high necked things…oh and fitted – my partner likes me in fitted, but it’ll have to be ruched to camouflage the ‘mummy tummy’ and cover my knobbly knees – I hate my knees. I really want something like the one I found on this Scandinavian website, but they only had it in black in a size 2. I need something drop dead gorgeous cos my ex and his new bird are going to be there and I have to look fabulous… For a ‘mother of’ there are few rules apart from those that you or the bride make for yourself. Which is why as fashion experts – we have to know how to listen. Ideally most ‘mother ofs’ want to know they look great with no fuss. They want to enjoy that precious hour of pre-wedding pampering, knowing they can whip on their outfit, look a million dollars and still find the time
to be at the beck and call of everyone else on the day. Choosing your ‘mother of’ outfit starts with colour. Selecting a shade that suits, tones with the bridesmaids and blends with the other ‘mother of’ can require clever negotiation. The major taboo is to wear white - it’s the brides day not yours, unless you have her permission of course, or to arrive wearing the exact colour or style as the other ‘mother of’ or the bridesmaids’. In consideration of the photo shoot, the wedding party wearers endeavour to tone and blend rather than clash. Excessively bold colours need to be chosen carefully to avoid photobombing – it’s the bride’s day. Headwear, such as picture hats and fascinators are usually the personal choice of the bride and/or wearer. For outdoor, beach, garden or resort weddings, the broad brimmed hat can be a stylish necessity for surviving sunstroke, but for the more formal wedding a fascinator can provide a formal edgy touch on the day. Surviving a wedding can be a massive achievement, bringing out the event manager in everyone, as you source florists, chefs, wine connoisseurs, photographers, make-up artists, hairdressers, valets … all at the best possible price! It’s exhausting, challenging and memorable. Our job at Polwarth Design is to help tick one box for you and make the shopping experience fabulous.

ow many of you have ever struggled with trust, personally or professionally? How do you nourish and grow trust in yourselves and each other?
In my own personal life, trust was one of the first areas that became questionable through conflict at a very early age and has since become an area I continue to work on for greater clarity. Trust is built in different ways, is very personal and can be violated so easily. Let’s break it down a bit and see if you can apply some of this in your own lives and if you currently are, then high five people, the world needs more of you! 1. Boundaries – these work well in relationships if both parties are clear about each other’s boundaries, you live by them and respect each other’s. Trust is difficult without
BEAUTY
Trust or distrust?

boundaries and can create a sense of being unsafe. 2. Reliabilty – being reliable is doing what you say you will, over and over again. Over and again. Can you trust in someone who says they will do something and they often do not? 3. Accountability – in your relationships, when you mess up in some way, do you own it, apologise and correct the energy? If so that’s great accountability and it works both ways. Own it. Nuff said. 4. Privacy – if someone shares with you, in confidence, that’s where it stays. If you share that information with someone else, then you have just violated the trust your friend had in you and you now become an untrustworthy person too. What is the value of sharing private information with other people? How does it contribute to the world? How does it
contribute to you? 5. Integrity – is not just doing the right thing when no-one else is looking. It’s choosing beyond comfort, having the courage to act differently and honouring your personal values – again, works both ways. 6. Judgment – cannot exist in the same space as trust. If someone allows you to see them in their vulnerability, (which is a strength by the way) they have trust in you. Don’t violate that with judgment. Trust in my view is a work-on for everyone including myself and ultimately, when we trust in ourselves, then we can be trusted at a greater level in our relationships personally and professionally.

Five reasons why you’ll never pick up a razor again D
CACI WHANGAREI TALKS TO SAVVY READERS
edicated to your razor? You may want to re-think this relationship. Shaving can have a number of surprising effects on you and your skin. Read on to find out about the damage it could be causing and why you may need to “breakup” with your little hair removal tool.
YOU’RE DAMAGING YOUR SKIN EACH TIME YOU SHAVE
Regular shaving puts stress on our skin; showing itself in ingrown hairs and razor burn, particularly on sensitive skin. Plus, ever noticed those little red bumps that appear after shaving - that’s caused by a bacteria ridden blade! Yuck!
WHEN YOU SHAVE, HAIR GROWS BACK QUICKLY AND PRICKLY- THERE’S ANOTHER WAY! We’ve all experienced just how much of a short term solution shaving can be when we notice hair re-growth just a few days after a time consuming shaving session! Not to mention, prickly, sharp re-growth! Laser hair removal is a long term solution for unwanted hair, delivering lasting results, so you don’t have to constantly shave and deal with prickly re-growth! Laser Hair Removal works by passing a light beam through the unwanted hair area which generates heat to loosen the hair and disables the hair forming cells.
GUESS HOW MUCH TIME YOU’RE WASTING SHAVING YOUR LEGS? On average, women spend a whole day every year shaving their legs! That’s right, 24 hours each year just shaving! We’re all have busy lives with work, kids, and friends, and can definitely think of better ways to be spending this time!
YOU’LL ALSO NEVER GUESS HOW MUCH MONEY YOU’RE SPENDING ON CONSTANT SHAVING? Razors can cost up to $25 each and dermatologists recommend replacing them after just a few uses! That could set you back over $300 a year! With laser hair removal, you can ditch
the razor (and its costs!). On our laser hair removal treatment plan, At Caci we offer a range of payment options and plans starting from only $22 a week, with truly long lasting results!
SAY GOODBYE TO HAIRY SITUATIONS! Whether it’s lifting your arm up to grab something on the supermarket shelf, or waving them around the dancefloor on a Friday night; there’s no need to be self-conscious or worry if

1. Three Hairdressing takes top honours at NZARH awards
L
ocal salon Three Hairdressing are celebrating anotheraward-filled competition season, with 3 of their stylists taking home top honours in the recent NZARH Northland Regional Hairdressing
Awards. These awards offer stylists the opportunity to showcase their technical ability, their creativity, and their ability to complete complex hair styling and colouring under critical time pressure. Misty Fenton, Jordyn O’Connor and Cody Houghton were among the award-winning team from Three Hairdressing, and are now heading to the National finals in Hamilton in October. Misty, currently a stylist at Three Hairdressing won the Senior Stylist Presentation Night Hair, the Live Cut, and the Presentation Colour; while Jordyn won the Next Generation Live Cut and Presentation Colour. Cody, also an apprentice hairdresser with Three Hairdressing, won the Senior Stylist Live Night Hair, impressing the panel with her braiding techniques. In addition to their individual success, Misty was awarded the overall Senior Stylist Hairdresser of the Year award, while Jordan won the Next Generation Hairdresser of the Year award.
These successes are a reflection of Three Hairdressing’s continuing dedication to the hairdressing industry; with the salon owners believing in the importance of strengthening their stylists’ core skills and pushing the boundaries of their creative abilities. This commitment to professional development for each of their stylists has led to Three Hairdressing becoming recognised as one of Northland’s top salons – both for their outstanding level of hairdressing, and their focus on raising the industry’s bar of excellence. For Misty, this is her second time qualifying as a finalist in the NZARH Supreme Awards, and she can remember the nerves, the pressure and the stress all too well from her first experience! For all of that, however, she wouldn’t change a thing. ‘Competing in these competitions gives us the chance to push our own creativity, and do something different to what we do in the salon every day.’ Says Misty, ‘The first time I competed it was pretty scary, but now I love the opportunity to create something different and learn new skills’. All three stylists will be heading to the National NZARH Supreme Awards, to be held in Hamilton in October. Congratulations to all entrants, and best of luck to Jordyn, Misty and Cody!

BEAUTY
Welcomed jewel in the Kaipara
estled in the hub of the tiny Kaipara settlement of Paparoa, is an unexpected gem for a village where the population reaches 300 on a busy day.
As well as being a Hollywood-style luxury for Kaipara locals, such is the reputation of expert skin therapist Nina Quan, Aucklanders even flock to use her service. And now, after just seven months in business, the Skin Image Clinic, which specialises in advanced skincare procedures, and offers other mainstream treatments, is a finalist for a national beauty industry award. It’s no surprise really - Nina has long held a passion for skin science, starting with her degree in biochemistry and genetics, followed by 15 years of marketing personal care with European multinationals across Australasia. “My passion is skin because it’s an amazing organ. It’s our largest and most neglected organ. It protects us, keeps us warm and cool, senses pain and pleasure and stretches and shrinks back when we have babies,” explains the bubbly mum of two. “It doesn’t take much to have healthy beautiful skin, yet there is little awareness and I just love it when I can show my clients how their skin can be healthy and beautiful with a few simple home care routines and professional treatments if they need it.” Today she wants to introduce me to electroporation and LED light therapy. First we start off with Nina’s signature aromatic foot soak and scrub to begin the relaxation process. While it’s a cold winter’s day outside, the room is cosy and I snuggle under a blanket on the comfy bed while Nina begins prepping the skin before it’s onto the serious stuff – a vitamins and peptides infusion using electroporation, a safe and non-invasive advanced technology designed to increase penetration of active ingredients into skin cells. Apart from a mild tingling as the electroporation wand touches over my face, I don’t feel a thing and next begins the LED light therapy, which works as an energy source for skin cells to repair and regenerate, similar to how plants use sun light as a source of energy to grow. By now I am completely relaxed and everything outside the walls, forgotten but, alas, it eventually comes to an end. My reflection certainly has a youthful glow and my skin feels plump, soft and smooth. As part of the New Zealand Association of Registered Beauty Professional award process to decide a ‘best new clinic’ winner, Nina will give a presentation on her clinic and be interviewed by a panel of judges in Auckland this month. “Are you feeling nervous or confident about your presentation?” I ask as we walk towards the door. “I’m feeling nervous because I’m competing with much bigger clinics with a lot more resources,” she replies. “But the local community has been completely supportive and appreciative of what I bring to Paparoa and keep asking what they can do to help.” I don’t think Nina needs any help. And at this point, an elderly local man walks by and waves through the window. A smiling Nina waves back and it is apparent that she has definitely been welcomed into the community.

Tip and techniques guiding a person who is blind or has low vision WITH THE EYE CENTRE - PRIMECARE
T
here’s no “secret” to interacting with people who are blind. They just want to be treated like everybody else, with courtesy and respect. So, relax and act naturally. Just be considerate of the fact that you can see and they cannot. They are the best person to tell you how to help. It’s jarring if someone unexpectedly grabs you. If they do need help, speak normally, unless they have a hearing loss. Use words like see, look and watch as people who are blind or have low vision use them too. Most people who have low vision, have some functional vision and this can fluctuate during the day and with different lighting conditions. Ask them, “Can you see alright or would you like me to help you?” Identify yourself when approaching someone who is blind, or when entering a room with them. Even if the person has met you before, he or she may not recognize you by your voice. In a group setting, address the person by name so they know when you’re talking to them. And inform the person when you depart, so they don’t continue the conversation to
an empty room. Let them take your arm above your elbow, keeping it close to your body so that the person you are guiding can follow your movements. Begin walking when you’re both ready, the person will walk about half a pace behind you and pick a comfortable pace for both of you. When you come to a street kerb or stairs, pause. Let the person know there is a kerb or staircase ahead and tell them they will need to go up or down. Ensure you are a step ahead so they can follow your body movement. If you need to change sides to access the handrail, let the person know you need to change sides and advise them to move across your back and grip your other arm. Indicate the location of the handrail by touching it with your guiding arm hand. When you step onto the landing or last step, pause (don’t stop) then continue walking. If you see someone who is blind or visually impaired about to encounter danger, be calm and clear when you warn the person. Use specific language such as “there’s a curb right in front of you,” or “the door in front of you is closed” instead of “watch out!” Also, use directional language such as “to your left” or “directly behind you” rather than “it’s over here.” Think about what information you would want to know if you couldn’t see. When you come to a doorway or narrow space where it is difficult to walk side by side, let the person know why you are changing your technique. By moving your arm behind and towards the centre of your back, they should fall in behind you and straighten their arm to prevent stepping on your heels. Continue walking a pace apart until you have passed through the narrow space and return your arm to the former stance. When seating the person, let them know which way their chair faces and place your guiding arm hand on the back of the chair so the person can follow your arm to locate the chair. If you approach from the front, stop in front of the seat with the seat aligned with the person and almost touching with their legs. Advise them of the seat orientation, location and type. Assist the person to sit or stand if they request.

Don’t leave a person without letting them know where you are going. When guiding a person into a car, walk the person to the door and explain which seat they are getting in i.e. front passenger or side doors. Place your guiding hand on the door handle so the person can follow down your arm to open the door. Don’t pet or distract a working guide dog. These dogs are busy directing their owners and keeping them safe. Distracting them makes them less effective and can put their owners in danger. Use “people first” language. No one wants to be labelled by how they are different. It’s kinder, and more accurate, to say “a person who is blind” rather than “a blind person.” We are all people first. A little understanding and sensitivity goes a long way. By following these suggestions, you’ll find that making a human connection is easy. It doesn’t matter if one person can see and the other can’t.

Five powerful emotional reasons to exercise BY CAROLYN HANSEN
T
here’s been a shift recently towards a more holistic approach to attaining a fit “wellness” lifestyle by encompassing other aspects besides the physical components including dimensions such as mental, social, spiritual, and emotional.
Emotional resilience is one of the hottest topics right now and refers to the ability to deal with emotions (both positive and negative) and effectively handle stress. It’s been called the “armour we need for modern life” and one of the easiest and most effective ways to live a calmer, more balanced existence as stress has now become a given, rather than something we need to deal with every so often. And…the really good news for wellness seekers is…like any other muscle, it’s something you can strengthen and develop over time. Yet more proof that where the body goes the mind will follow. Just as you need to exercise your body to make it as strong and resilient as it can be, you must exercise your mind to ensure it’s equipped to rebound from life’s endless obstacles. The most successful people are those that don’t allow challenges and setbacks to hold them back; instead, they use these moments as opportunities to propel themselves forward. Whenever they experience something difficult or painful, ultimately they’re able to bounce right back and continue on their journey even stronger than they were before because they’ve cultivated a level of resilience that allows them to do so. In other words, they’re emotionally fit. After all, a healthy body weight, strong muscles and overall

physical health aren’t the only results gained from regular exercise. Be assured there are also many emotional benefits, which are just as important. Here are five feel-amazing reasons to get active. 1. Increased confidence and sense of accomplishment. Every completed workout is a goal that has been set, acted upon and achieved. At times when you feel powerless in your world, a workout is all yours. It’s one hundred percent you making a decision and making it happen. This may seem insignificant in a whirlwind of challenges and adversity, but each small workout is a giant leap toward being in charge of your life. 2.A clear mind and enhanced focus. Exercise increases oxygen and blood flow through your entire body, and it removes you from the hustle and bustle of the day. If you have a problem to solve or need a fresh perspective, get exercising as it is active meditation removing the clutter of a situation and will keep in you in the present moment. 3. Less crankiness and more joy. Do you ever feel like you could make a list of 50 things going sideways in your life? Chances are 49 of those things will correct themselves if you simply head to the gym. Exercise releases a flood of chemicals called endorphins stimulating positive feelings. 4. Stress reduction. In addition to endorphin surges, regular exercise is key for reducing and managing the negative effects of stress on our body systems. Stress releases cortisol and adrenaline, two hormones with the potential to cause a cascade of health (disease) problems built on a foundation of stress. One workout at a time you can improve your body’s resilience to stress, decreasing the overall amount of cortisol and adrenaline released.
5. Improved mood, lowered anxiety. It’s a well-kept secret that people who exercise regularly also have lower risk of depression. Our pill-popping culture tends to emphasize medical interventions for psychological disorders over behavioural treatments which is a shame as the endorphins released improve overall mental health over the long term. When you exercise and as your levels of endorphins increase, your feelings of worry also start to diminish. You refocus your attention from your daily problems to the workout itself. You can gain a fresh perspective on even the most preoccupying concerns in your life by taking an exercise break. When you return to these daily problems, you approach them with renewed energy and even some new ways to figure out solutions. Take action By taking active “exercise” steps to look after our health and wellbeing we can learn to reduce the impact of stress on our life by managing external pressures and developing our emotional resilience – the ability to adapt and bounce back during times of change and adversity. To show up as the best versions of ourselves and experience the greatest wellbeing in our lives it is crucial that we are emotionally fit enough to deal effectively with stress, pressure and challenge. It’s time to be intentional and make working out your mental health as important as working out your body, not just for the health benefits but also to be your best self and contribute to a better world.

Colour therapy for your home BY TRACEY HARVEY, INTERIOR DESIGNER @ FRAZERHURST.
I
t’s no secret that colour can have an impact on our emotions and who
doesn’t want to have
a happy and relaxing home? It’s also no secret that as social beings we will tend towards the trends which are currently Black, White and Grey in various forms. So how do we make the two ideas works cohesively? My advice is Consider what your home is for: • Is it a Show home? • Are you planning to dress the home for resale? • Are you going to be living there long term? At Frazerhurst we have a few ideas that can help. The most practical and cost effective way to add colour and character without clutter is with your window dressings. There are amazing fabrics available in colours a psychologist would have a field day with and if this is your long term home, go for it. Have some fun. However, your favourite giant magnolia print in purple may not suit if you’re looking to sell in the current ‘Greige’ market. If you want to keep it neutral and subtle but interesting you can still change the character of each room by considering a Sheer fabric to the front with coloured linings behind. Each room can have its own emotional character without being at odds with each other. Similarly you can choose one fabric and use this throughout but a different colour in each room. Many of our suppliers have colour pallets that look wonderful side by side. The one room I like to break all the rules is in the Baby’s room. Come into the showroom and let us show you some of the variety available. Dots, stripes, stars, owls, monkeys and cars! The showroom at Frazerhurst is packed with inspiration and the friendly knowledgeable staff are here to help.

W

ell, here at BedsRus we offer a variety of spring and spring less systems
in our mattresses that are manufactured by Sleepyhead. But it really does depend on who will be using the bed, what they weigh and how deep your pockets are? Without getting too technical, its best I keep this simple and explain the benefits so you can narrow it down to suit your individual requirements. If the bed is for the kids, young or teenage years, we would recommend either our basic Bonnel spring system, with a weight guideline of 80kg per person and a 5 year warranty, or if you needed something more substantial for their growing bodies, in terms of longevity and great support, we would highly recommend the Torquezone spring system. It’s backed by the New Zealand Chiropractic Association for its strength, durability and correct alignment of your spine. This spring system was developed some 35 years ago. The weight guideline is 140kg per person and extremely well priced. This system is also ideal for adults in all situations. For those who require a bed that lessens partner disturbance and offers better alignment of your spine (5 zoned) then the recent improved Torquezone spring system, known as HD Chiropractic, which is stronger, is ideal and has unlimited weight guidelines. For the couples who want minimal partner disturbance, there are a lot more choices, like pocket spring beds. Because the springs are individual and in a web format, they are designed to keep partner disturbance at the low end of the scale… Ideally if you want minimal partner disturbance and greater spine alignment, best to try our exclusive range of 7 zoned pocket sprung Swisstek beds. The weight guideline on pocket springs is 110kg per person. Stepping up to pure luxury, which encompasses all the great features of no partner disturbance, perfect alignment of your spine and glorious comfort, then look no further than the Sensorzone spring range of beds. The springs in these beds, never touch each other, as they are embedded in a Dreamfoam core. A choice of different comfort levels are available across the ranges, i.e. firm, medium and soft, plus silk and wool is used in the quilting, which improves air circulation. They too are approved by the NZ Chiropractic Association and have an unlimited weight guideline. Last but not least, for those who prefer a mattress with no springs, there are a couple of options. The first is the Design Mobel full latex mattress, extremely healthy, particularly for those asthma sufferers and for those who prefer a more “natural” mattress. The second option for me, the ultimate, (sorry I am biased)it moulds to your entire body, supporting without pressure build up, cooler and has an extremely fast reaction time, its the Fusion Gel range, which are exclusive to BedsRus in Whangarei . They are also perfect for any Adjustable bed base. Please be aware that all the above beds come in a variety of different comfort levels and all have a 10 year warranty. At BedsRus Whangarei, we offer a 30 Day Comfort Warranty (conditions apply), so call in and we will promise to do our best in matching you to your perfect sleep. PS: Please remember information is always free, so if you have a question or concern, please do not hesitate to call us on 0800141640 (option 2), 7 days a week. I also recommend you look at our BedsRus website. Till next time….and it will be in a lighter vein! Cheers, Corgi

But it isn’t necessarily so! Many recent exhibitions around the country have showcased the vitality and impact which results from acting fearlessly with colour. The same principles can be used at home. Approach your own ‘artwork styling’ by taking stock. Examine each space’s character, scale, setting, lighting, and reflective properties. This sounds complicated, but a little thought and planning can have a fabulous result. Next, ask yourself whether you adore those artworks you own. Just because some painting was handed down to you doesn’t mean you have to display it! Life is too short to look at things you don’t cherish. So – here’s the fun bit – what is it that you really adore in art and life? What moods or themes would you like your own spaces to evoke? Why not reflect these passions? If you want to remind yourself of a specific place or create a certain atmosphere, you can do so through art. Other possessions can always be stored, given away, or sold! If you have admired artworks you’ve seen in a particular café or while on a wonderful holiday, commission or buy something similar. Your surroundings should psychologically lift you. You may have totally differently themed artworks assigned to different rooms. Each room can have its own distinctive feel. Think about those rooms in relationship to the artworks. Could the colour or treatment of the walls be changed to better suit? Some people work in the opposite way. They’ll ‘inherit’ a certain interior wall colour, and then find artworks which they think will suit the colours. It may work, but do this and you may never truly love your surroundings! Why not experiment with different wall settings by painting different coloured Resene testpots onto large pieces of paper? Try A3-sized pieces of card, and place
these behind the artworks you intend to display in each space. Now cast a critical eye over the colour in its setting. Does it work with the current amount of light? How does it look against what’s beyond the windows? Will this background colour calm you down? Or rev you up? Which feelings would you rather experience daily? Do you like the feel of strong colour contrasted against other strong colours, or would you prefer the rooms to be graduations of similar basic tones? Maybe you’d prefer just one definitely hued wall in each space, with a certain grouping of themed artworks hung here. Quiet, unassuming artworks can receive more attention against a coloured wall. Such artworks, on cream, can sink into the background. Selecting a colour provides drama and draws attention. What you’re after is a tone which enhances but won’t overpower the artwork. Sometimes the best option is to take your cue from the background colours of the artwork and use that for your wall colour inspiration. If you’ve painted a wall for particular artworks, and don’t love the result, it may be an issue of visual balance, or too many focal points. Try subtracting room items. Add black or white accessories, ceilings or floors. These may ‘ground’ or lighten your scheme so it all looks right. Switch paintings around. Your eye should be the final judge!

T
he widely held view is that art looks better on white walls. But is that always the case? The theory goes that art looks better on white walls – it apparently allows the art to stand out, and for the eye not to be distracted by the coloured walls behind.
Top tips Don’t be afraid to experiment. Everyone loves seeing art against solid colour, rather than white or cream. Hang it no higher than general eye level. Having two or three strongly coloured walls to choose from means more of your pieces can have the perfect backdrop. For instance, a dark-blue-toned piece with no frame will disappear against a similarly dark backdrop, but will zing against a yellow wall. Take your cues from the art itself but also the size and light of a space. Contrasting art against different colours of similar ‘weight’ or ‘depth’ is a good thing, visually pushing a picture out. Don’t be timid. Create bits of theatre with strong colour, even if it presents more of a challenge when styling your

It’s long been a technique for stylists – layering up the shelves, placing a knobbly rug on the floor, introducing fringed cushions to the furniture, and using texture in general to create an interesting scheme. “Textures help create the mood and ambiance in a space, and invites you to touch and feel,” says Resene colour expert Nikki Morris. “Texture lifts a room from drab to fab when done the right way and in the right places.” Take a look at your favourite magazines and websites, and you’ll notice even the most pared back homes have a certain something that makes them stand out. It could be anything from a striped wall to a Bohemian assortment of cushions on the sofa, but it’s these textured details that add up to a magazineworthy space. And it’s incredibly easy for homeowners to replicate.

The magic of touch
Hands on approach In the Resene range, there are products dedicated to giving added texture to homes. Resene Sandtex is a gritty coating that leaves a fine, sandstone look (instead of using plaster). It’s commonly used on masonry exteriors but paint effects specialist and artist Greer Clayton has unlocked another purpose for the product, using it to age terracotta pots, to paint over brickwork on a fireplace and to ‘grit up’ old tiles. Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path paint is also an option, with its gritty finish.“ With Resene Sandtex, it’s all about layering,” says Greer. “I also use it with plaster to create some amazing stone-like effects.” Another Resene product that Greer can’t get enough of is Resene Resitex, which has a coarser effect to Resene Sandtex. “It gives instant ‘guts’ to a surface, followed by additional layers of Resene Sandtex to plump up the thickness,” she says.
The reason we’re drawn to texture is that it’s so prevalent in nature, and we feel an organic connection to it – it feels natural to extend that to our homes.
Texture in the home is commonly approached in two ways: tactile and visual. Touchable textures aren’t a new interior trend, but it’s oh-sofashionable in home stores right now. Textured wallpaper is especially huge at the moment, says Nikki. “We’re seeing a lot of the anaglypta wallpapers from the Resene wallpaper collection returning to the mix,” she says. “Homeowners are painting them in metallic paint or semi-gloss finishes for something a little luxurious, but still textural.” Wallpaper can also be used on a smaller scale. How about using it on a bedhead board or behind glass for a kitchen splashback? The reason we’re drawn to texture is that it’s so prevalent in nature, and we feel an organic connection to it – it feels natural to extend that to our homes. Keep this in mind when shopping for home accessories. Look out for bamboo lightshades, woven baskets, tassels and fringe trims, interesting fabrics and a plush rug that looks as good as it feels underfoot.
Visual texture There are many elements you can use to add ‘visual’ texture: • Think about colour contrast and layers: Painted stripes, coloured ceilings and ombre walls. Give old furniture an easy distressed paint finish by using different coloured layers and sanding back the topcoat in patches. Or daub Vaseline on bare timber in patches, paint then wipe off the Vaseline. • Consider faux wallpaper: weathered timber, planked concrete and bamboo walls. • Use washes and stains which add richness to timber but let the grain show through. Check out the Resene Colorwood (for inside) or Resene Woodsman (for outside) ranges. • Try colours from the Resene Metallics and Special Effects range. Shimmer and sparkle is great for visual texture.

Home grown fruit all year round?? W BY DEBBIE OLDFIELD
e are quite lucky up here in Northland, we can grow a wide range of fruit trees from sub-tropical plants (in sheltered warm areas) thru to stone fruit you normally associate with the South Island. Trees such as cherries and apricots will fruit up here if you buy the right
varieties. Most houses with a decent sized section should be able to grow fruit for themselves for most if not all the year round. Here’s a list of readily available fruit trees/shrubs showing which months the fruit should be ready.

Breakfast and Lunch Menu

BOB Cafe – Review 29 Bank St, Whangarei
H
eading into a busy café around midday for a work meeting can often turn into a disaster, but when a group of us headed to Bob Café for lunch it was perfect. The service was quick, we all loved the food and the coffee was great! I selected the warm lamb salad option on the menu, and asked for my dressing on the side. My salad was fresh, the lamb was Warm lamb salad tender, warm and succulent and there was plenty of it. There was a generous amount of salad greens on the plate, along with tomato, micro greens and sprouts. Throughout the salad was crumbled feta and fresh herbs, accompanied by a drizzling of their dressing on the side. I came away feeling satisfied on a number of counts, eating a tasty healthy option, the portion being the perfect size, and great value for money. Oh… and the coffee was perfect too! rench Toast I am a huge fan of French Toast. Whenever I see French Toast on a menu at any café, that is what I want! So as you can imagine, my expectations of this simple but delicious dish are very high. What I had at Bob Café was divine – not your everyday French toast. Not the kind you might throw together with some sandwich bread, eggs and milk. Bob’s French Toast was so much more… The dish was made with bakery-quality French Toast bread with a delicate custard flavour, vanilla and a touch of cinnamon, cooked till slightly crisp on the exterior and creamy on the interior, and tasted almost like bread pudding. Served hot with maple syrup, crispy bacon, banana and apple slices – simply the best French Toast I have ever had! The breakfast/lunch options at Bob Café have to be some of the best in town and very well priced. The service was prompt, the Bubble & Squeak atmosphere great, and the food fantastic. I highly recommend Bob Café for a great casual dining experience. ho doesn’t like Bubble and Squeak to warm the heart on a winters’ day? Not having had a plate of ‘bubble and squeak’ for many years, I saw it on the menu and immediately started salivating while remembering those wonderful flavour combinations. When it came to the table I knew it was not going to be the last ‘bubble and squeak’ that I would enjoy at Bob Café. The modern touch to the dish transformed it into an elegant but still very hearty winter meal. Full of flavour and freshness, I have one word to described it… YUM! itting at the table, I saw a tower of food going to the table next door and I knew at a glance it was what I Hash Tower wanted. On asking the waitress about the gourmet delight sitting to my left, as soon as she mentioned ‘The Hash Tower’ my mind was made up! It was the most delicious tower of toast layered with hash browns, bacon, a poached egg and avocado. It was then topped with micro sprouts and a rich hollandaise sauce. The best choice when breakfast was missed at the start of that day. I left Bob Café feeling very satisfied!

he local community of Onerahi/Onerahirahi is an active participant of the wave of “true tales” series that is seeing an acceleration in the interest and value of social history in New Zealand. It is an intriguing formula of delving back into memories and
researching recordings and archival material of local stories, to focus on the ordinary lives of people in our community and quite often ordinary events that through the passage of time in many cases are now quite extraordinary! The Onerahi community represented by an energetic and enthusiastic group of volunteers working alongside our community has in Volume 1 provided for a diverse collection of 109 true stories from 92 people who live in, or who have had a close association with, Onerahi. True Tales of Onerahi/Onerahirahi was released in November 2016 with an official blessing and launch of the book and photo exhibition. Early aural recordings are being transcribed and the first book stories are being recorded to allow for the sharing of the stories in a further medium. The Team are now in the throes of producing a Heritage Brochure and collecting stories and material for Volume 2! So the call is out for TRUE TALES OF more stories… Purchase of the book is available locally at the Onerahi Bookshop, Airport Café, Kamo BookIn, Kamo Bookshop, Whangarei Museum and Whangarei I Site and TradeMe. There is a kaleidoscope with the dinosaurs and a penguin sitting on the cold floor, what adventures did they get up to while we were sleeping? The Children’s Book Award nominees are great reading, and many of our collectable ranges are now in stock and more to arrive in August. Soon our Science section will explode with hundreds of new products and we might have to expand the store to fit everything in. ARTS
JO HARDY RETROSPECTIVE
W
hangarei Art Museum – Te Manawa Toi is honoured to present NOT NOW APOCALYPSE: Jo Hardy Retrospective. Considered one of the matriarchs of Northland art, NOT NOW APOCALYPSE exhibits over 100 works from Hardy’s oeuvre, many of which are loaned from private collections within Northland and wider New Zealand. The retrospective includes a selection of exquisite lithographs that were produced in the 80s and 90s at Te Kowhai Print Trust - a community printmaking facility based at the Quarry Arts Centre in Whangarei. Hardy attended Ilam School of Fine arts and exhibited in Christchurch before moving to Northland in the late 70s where she continued to produce over 600 paintings. She also fell in love, married, became a mother, a gardener, a writer, a member of a rural community and, in 2003, was widowed. Jo Hardy – who also worked under the names Jo Who (painter/printmaker) and Jo McNeill (Northern Advocate art critic and columnist) – was self-trained in acrylic paint. Combined with her excellent drawing skills, she developed a mature and deliberative style spanning nearly 50 years. The bright and whimsical aesthetic of Hardy’s paintings ground themselves around the human condition. Her paintings are reactions to what she saw, what she felt and what she needed to explain. Hardy underlined a freedom of consciousness; borrowing aspects of reality and using them as metaphors in a parallel painted universe. She believed we each invent reality as we go along; painting is one of the ways to do it. “I am interested in portraying both what is and what is not. My pictures are a deliberate record-keeping of fleeting minutiae, memories, dreams, attempts to depict that which has no fixed visual form and narrative fiction.” - Jo Hardy, 1998. Hardy’s paintings are lyrical narrative works painted with acrylic on canvas. She worked on her knees on the floor, as if at prayer. Slowly, with care and precision, she built up thin wet layers of coloured washes, tickling them up until they glow. The celebrated Northland artist sadly passed away of cancer on the 25th of July 2016 but not before she had given her blessing to the Whangarei Art Museum to curate and develop her retrospective exhibition bringing 50 years of art making together in one space. With strong connections to Maungakaramea and Whangarei- it has been a blessing to meet and hear from Jo’s family, friends, neighbours and acquaintances who have kindly shared her art and memories.

here are just days left for youth to register for the opportunity to take part in the 2017 Northland Youth Summit Arts Festival which will be held in Dargaville on Wednesday and Thursday 6 & 7 September. This FREE two-day festival gives our 12-24 year olds the chance to express their stories and voices in a medium that suits their interests. There will be five innovative and creative workshops facilitated by experts in the fields of music production, digital film and video, mural design, performance and theatre and 3D projection mapping. The facilitators include actor/director Christopher Graham and Jess Collins drama teacher representing Northland Youth Theatre who will work with the students to create a performance piece. The music group will write lyrics and compose songs with music tutor Paul Mathieson and Otium lead singer Jessie Samu. Northtec visual arts tutor Faith McManus and painter David Sarich will guide the mural artists to paint a series of mural panels which when assembled together will be exhibited on a location to be revealed in Dargaville. Ana Heremaia and Ruby Watson from Akau Studio in Kaikohe along with Hans Kim from Mass will facilitate the 3D projection mapping workshop where participants will play, experiment and learn about design, storytelling, creative drawing and communication skills as well as 3D projection mapping technology skills. Director of photography Adam Jones and Facebox producer Raewyn Barry will teach the digital film and video workshop attendees to use professional camera, sound and editing equipment to document the entire Summit, with their film screened at the end of the event and when completed put on YouTube.
