I

wish the I Have a Dream programme had existed when I went to Tikipunga High School back in the 90s. Such was the reputation of the school, we went out of zone from Onerahi to attend. But in our seventh form year, which I have to stop and think about, but I believe equates to year 13, we had our common room taken off us. I can’t remember why but we lost a good portion of the year protesting. We never did get it back and I recall a lot of other precious time being wasted hanging down at Georgie Pie on Bank St with our friends from Boys and Girls Highs. My point is, I, along with many of my peers, probably wasn’t placing focus where it should have been and the students of today are lucky to have much better than a common room in the form of the onsite I Have a Dream house where they can drop in and seek guidance from the ever-present navigators. Their navigators follow them through their schooling life and help steer them on track, or keep the rudder in line, as they head toward their goals.

Whangarei Dreamers during their MediaWorks Hui had the opportunity to introduce I Have a Dream to Auckland radio and tv.

Bright futures for Whangarei Dreamers BY JODI BRYANT

In 2016, I Have A Dream set out to change the lives of hundreds of Whangarei schoolchildren, many of them living in material hardship, with the goal of abating inter-generational poverty by inspiring dreams and enabling career paths. Jodi Bryant takes a look at how it’s tracking…

While two of these navigators manage early entrants, from year three, permanent navigators are assigned to follow the same group right through to year 15. The core mission for the navigators is to help uncover and develop each child’s dream and unique capabilities, while encouraging leadership, community participation, sports and improving quality of life. Scott says the students love their navigators and have a sense of security knowing there are caring and consistent adults supporting them, in addition to their whānau. “As you can imagine, they form very strong relationships and this is the core strength of our programme. They are a social worker as much as an educator and do whatever it takes to make sure that every one of these children come out of year 13 literate, numerate and with all the social skills to go on to a career or higher education.” Late last year, a New Zealand Herald investigation highlighted the low rates of entry to so-called ‘elite’ university courses – law, medicine and engineering – of students from low-decile schools. UPCOMING SILVER FERN BY JODI BRYANT

ut if the year 10 Tikipunga High School student hadn’t joined the I Have a Dream programme in year seven, she thinks her life would have taken more of a downward path. “Things would be very different,” says the ambitious 14-year-old, with the 100 per cent school attendance rate. “I think I’d be lessfocused on schoolwork and possibly even have gone off the rails.” “I did all the work but it wasn’t my main focus. I think I was probably more into playing with my friends and eating my lunch,” she giggles. Olivia was one of the first students to join I Have a Dream when it launched in Whangarei in 2016. “I was intrigued and thought this could be a good idea for kids in our area because sometimes they do need guidance and there’s not necessarily an adult figure that they can go to about it.” Quietly-spoken Olivia says, after joining the programme, schoolwork became more important. “Instead of talking to my friends, I

could focus on school – it was more important. Then I would go to the I Have a Dream house and we could talk about it.” The I Have a Dream house is the base located on campus where students can drop in at morning tea, lunch or after school, when programmes are run. This is where you will find the students’ navigators. Olivia’s navigator, Mo Matautia-Tepania spent her first term in the role, building relationships with the Dreamers, focusing on trust and consistency. “It was learning for all of us but the connections established were so valuable. My navigator role is extremely rewarding. Each navigator brings their own flair to the role and

coaching intermediate level and never missed a training or game. “I think the netball courts are my second home,” she laughs. Back when the programme was launched, an 11-year-old Olivia featured in the promotional video and stated that she wanted to become a zoo-keeper. When asked today, if that is still her dream, she nods, adding that she’d now also like to be a lawyer. “It’s either a zoo-keeper or a lawyer. I’ve seen a lot of injustice in the community and over in America, things that aren’t right… “I Have a Dream is a really good thing. Everyone should be able to have the chance to be involved with it because it opens up opportunities you wouldn’t otherwise have and you get to do amazing things.” Some of these activities have included helping with food preparation for the homeless at the Soul Food kitchen, which those involved found ‘very rewarding’, and watching The SkyCity Breakers play basketball last year in Auckland, which was an incentive to the many student fans for achieving their goals. Olivia was also filmed in the IHAD song and helped with renovations to the headquarters when Three’s The Block NZ came to town. Olivia’s whanau are heavily involved in her learning and extra-curricular activities by volunteering in any way they can. “They’re very proud of where I am and very thankful to Mo and everyone.” Adds Mo: “Our dreamers are amazing young superstars. They have every right to succeed and do the best they can for their future. I often say to them: ‘You need to learn all you can so you can be my boss one day!’ All I get is a giggle from them.”

that is reflected in the Dreamers.” Mo has watched Olivia, not only excel in class and become an avid sports woman, but also blossom and grow. “Olivia is going to go a long way. She’s got that determination and drive and, once she sets her mind on something, she’s got that YOLO (you only live once) attitude. She’s got good leadership skills and the respect of a lot of her peers. I just love how she always gives her time to things that aren’t just benefiting her and she’s always very humble.” Dubbed the upcoming Irene Van Dyk, Olivia has played netball since she was four and, as well as playing in the school senior netball team, the talented goal shoot has been

Turning out confident youngsters through art BY JODI BRYANT

essie Rose would constantly receive emails from parents asking if she would teach their children art and, for a long time, she sent back the same answer. “I said ‘I’d love to, but I’m not at all trained so therefore I can’t’,” says the Kamo local. But in the midst of replying to one of the parents with her usual response, Jessie took pause and had a re-think. The message was deleted and, instead, she replied with: ‘Actually, yeah ok, if you can get a couple of her friends together, I will look for a wee place to do it’.” The venue was found - a shop Jessie, in fact, used to walk past every day to school and, two weeks later, having taken a gamble and left her job, Inspire Art with Jessie Rose

was born. Classes filled within days and the first term was a huge success. “From that, I quickly realised there was something in this. My students wanted to come back – I had a 95 per cent return rate and I saw results happening before my eyes,” says the self-taught artist. “By making that mindset change, it opened me up to the possibilities and things fell into place.” Jessie says the fact she isn’t trained hasn’t mattered in the least – instead, it has worked in her favour. “If anything, I am now grateful I haven’t had any formal training as, if I had, I would be teaching from what I had been taught, rather

than teaching from what I have learnt along the way – the knowledge and experience I have gained from my years as an artist.” And it’s not just the kids who have been learning: “They have taught me that I, in fact, do have something of value to pass on. I have tried to teach these kids through my own experiences to just be themselves and that it is ok to do that.” More than two years on, there are now over 100 students a term. Jessie believes her classes are aptly named because they are literally inspiring her students to use their creative voice and express themselves through art, which will help prepare today’s youth to take on the world with passion and creativity. “To know that anything is possible if they dream big, letting them know it’s ok to be different – it is giving these kids such confidence, realising they can be themselves

“My goal was to make an inspiring, creative and safe haven for children to create, learn and grow ...”

and that they can express their feelings - no matter what those feelings may be. “My goal was to make an inspiring, creative and safe haven for children to create, learn and grow. I wanted to do my part as an artist to try and make a difference to Northland youth of today, through the beauty of art. “And I could have never ever believed these amazing results. I have got some lifechanging stories and I’ve had the privilege to watch first-hand the change in these kids. Kids that were shy or bullied or withdrawn, are now confident, self-assured, happy, onto-it kids, all finding their value in art.” Inspire also offers a sponsorship program where local businesses can sponsor a child anonymously living in hardship to attend classes. During each course, the students produce their own canvas painting, which goes on display to the public in an exhibition. In addition to Inspire, Jessie Rose offers day classes to home-schooled children, and adult day-time drop-in classes, along with a boutique shop displaying her own work.

AN ITCHY ISSUE

H

ead lice. Nits. Critters. Creepy crawlies. It’s enough to make your head itch even if you are not infested with the parasitic insects that feed on human blood and live close to the scalp. Nits are a fact of life around New Zealand schools and childcare centres, with many parents frustrated by the difficulty of getting rid of them. Research shows overtreatment with chemical insecticides has created resistance amongst New Zealand head lice, making them more difficult to treat and eradicate than in previous decades. There are all manner of head lice formulations and shampoos on the market, as well as electric combs, nit combs and so-called “natural” treatments which can still contain chemicals however the studies show the most effective treatment is the “conditioner and comb” treatment, which involves combing conditioner through an infestation and dunking all lice and eggs in hot water to kill them. Store-bought head lice shampoos must be applied to all parts of the hair, ideally with the same precision with which a hairdresser applies colour to hair, doing it in sections and applying it close to the scalp. No head lice product or insecticide currently kills all eggs, but is likely to kill the live lice. The problem is that eggs hatch at various stages of the life cycle and reinfestation occurs if re-treatment is not performed.

A complete getting rid of head lice regime consists of two treatments, a week or so apart. The first treatment kills the climbers, and the second kills the juvenile lice hatched from the eggs over the intervening week. In all head lice cases a second treatment is needed as no head lice treatment kills 100 per cent of the eggs. So if the first treatment killed all climbers, at the second treatment one would expect only juveniles, hatched from eggs during the seven day period, and no adults. You must retreat on day seven with the same product that worked on the first treatment Also, head lice cannot be caught from dogs or cats, as they can only survive on a diet of human blood. New Zealand has many different head lice products on the market, but only four active lice-killing compounds are used, which include: • pyrethrins • synthetic pyrethroids such as permethrin and bioallethrin • organophosphates such as malathion or maldison • herbal and essential oils If you use one product that doesn’t

kill lice, look to see what the active compound is and then choose a product from another group. IMPORTANT! • Cover your child’s eyes while the treatment is being applied. Ask them to hold a towel against their eyes. • Don’t use dangerous chemicals such as kerosene on children’s hair – it is not only flammable, but could seriously harm their eyes. If a head lice shampoo or treatment is effective (i.e. the lice are not resistant to it), studies show the lice will be dead within 20 minutes. The head lice resistance test Insecticide resistance in head lice is common, but it can be detected by assessing the effect of treatments. If live lice are found in the combings after treatment that has been correctly applied, the head lice are resistant to the product used, and possibly to any other product using the same active compound. You can test if the lice are killed effectively by treatments with the 20-minute death check:

• After 20 minutes, use a fine tooth comb to comb the entire head of hair and then wipe the combings onto a tissue. This needs to be done at least twice and until little treatment formulation is visible on the hair. • Examine the tissues and see if lice are alive or dead. Assess success of treatment and possible insecticide resistance. • If all lice are dead, infestation is sensitive to product used. • If some lice are inactive but alive, infestation may be partly resistant to treatment, but regard the louse population as “sensitive” if no lice are active. • If some lice are active, infestation is resistant. • For a sensitive population of head lice, the current treatment has been successful, but embryos in eggs will most likely survive. Retreat in 7 days using the same product. • For resistant lice, the current treatment has been unsuccessful. If lice are still present after two treatments, there are two options: • Re-treatment with same preparation a third time in seven days • One week after the second treatment, put conditioner in the hair, comb with a fine tooth comb and check for lice. • A good strategy to manage this situation is to use the conditioner and fine tooth comb technique between treatments. If conditioner is applied and then immediately combed out, the nymphs that have hatched will be removed. Do this at least twice in the seven days between treatment one and treatment two. Some cases of head lice are horribly persistent and experts say the reasons for failure come down to one or several of the following: • Inadequate application of the head lice product • Lice are resistant to insecticide

• Failure to retreat to kill nymphs emerged from eggs • Reinfestation You can buy prepared chemical solutions in bottles, but with head lice resistance a common problem, university researchers and schools recommend the cheap conditioner and comb cure for head lice. You need to know before you begin: • Wear gloves. • All combs should soak in hot water and disinfectant after use. • Lice die in hot water at 60C in 30 seconds. • Scrub the combs and check that they are clean before reuse. • Try to use a very fine comb, and after use you will need to scrub it with an old hard toothbrush and perhaps a pin or dental floss used to remove eggs caught in the base of the comb. Check in good light that the job is done properly. It does need to be followed precisely to be effective: • Apply plain white conditioner liberally to dry hair. • Cover scalp to the ends of the hair. • De-tangle hair with regular comb – if you do it with the nit comb straight away, your child will squeal and never co-operate again! • Leave conditioner in hair for five minutes • Separate hair into sections. • Comb through with the fine comb. • Wipe the conditioner from the comb onto a tissue and look for lice and eggs (nits). • Remove all nits to assure total lice treatment. • Rinse conditioner from hair and clean the fine comb in accordance with instructions above. • Repeat this if active cases of head lice reappear. They do come back! Check your child’s hair regularly.

STORYTIME CHARACTER HUNT SUNDAY AUGUST 11, 10.30AM

The Storytime Character Hunt is coming again! Every year, in celebration of the New Zealand Book Awards For Children and Young Adults, Storytime Award Winning Books and Toys team up with the Whangarei Central Library to stage the Storytime Character Hunt. This year, they are also teaming up with Musicool; Making a Scene and Harper Collins to bring this free event to life.

BOOKS WITH STORYTIME 8 | SAVVY

Children and their parents search the nooks and crannies of Whangarei’s fabulous Central Library and nearby Cafler Park (weather-permitting) to find each of the 20 or so participating storybook characters. Once found, the character must be correctly identified in order to stamp each entry card. Come dressed as your favourite storybook character and win a spot prize. The Storytime Character Hunt is a fun community event which allows children and adults to play together. Come and play!

Great things can happen for communities that play together; We begin to laugh and talk to one another, we lighten up, inside jokes are shared, memories are made and treasured. This year, Storytime is delighted to also host Heather Haylock, the New Zealand author of Granny McFlitter, Champion Knitter and Granny McFlitter, A Country Yarn. Heather will be reading her awesome books and you will be able to purchase these directly from her. Bring along your book if you would like Heather to autograph it.

estoring and enhancing clean waterways from the mountains to the sea is an ambitious goal and requires the help of many. Local business MTF Whangarei have made it a bit easier by sponsoring local environmental group, the Whitebait Connection (WBC), a 12-seater van and trailer. The trailer and van are being used to transport volunteers, students and resources out to enable more freshwater monitoring, education, science, planting and clean up events in and around Whangarei. The Whitebait Connection is an actionbased environmental education programme for schools and communities focusing on the health of streams, rivers and wetlands. The Whitebait Connection is run under the umbrella of the Mountains to Sea Conservation trust and operates all year round in seven regions throughout New Zealand. Its sister programme, Experiencing Marine Reserves (EMR) also operates under the same umbrella enabling a truly ‘Mountains to Sea’ education package for local schools.

Since 2001, WBC have facilitated the planting of over 57,000 native plants along over 14km of waterways, delivered over 1183 programmes in schools and worked with over 56,000 Northlanders. They have also identified and enhanced 19 Īnanga (whitebait) spawning areas, when previously there was only one known site in the whole of Northland. The Whitebait Connection was acknowledged recently when they won Northland Regional Council’s ‘Environmental action in water quality improvement’ award for their efforts and they have plans to continue and expand their work in Northland. “The new van and trailer are going to enable more of this work to happen, so a huge thank you to MTF Whangarei for getting us moving!” says Whitebait Connection National co-ordinator Kim Jones. The Whitebait Connection facilitate the running of a community native plant nursery in Whangarei called He kākano that has the capacity to grow up to 15,000 native riparian plants per planting season.

“We are right in the middle of the planting season now, and we really appreciate as much help as we can get,” adds Kim. “People can check out our events on Facebook or our website and get involved, and now we even have the capacity to offer them a ride!” But the beautiful native plants grown by the He kākano nursery aren’t the only things growing at a healthy rate. To maintain the quality of the growing Whitebait Connection programme, the team have adopted big aspirations for the future to continue to provide and support:

• • • •

Structured, evidence-based programmes Emergent/community-led programmes Conservation actions and interventions Partnerships and collaborations While Whitebait Connection are already well on their way to achieving these goals, the success is largely owing to the principles that guide them, including the power of community action, empowerment through education, kaitiakitanga, and being solution-focused. The generous support of volunteers and sponsors has also been crucial to achieving great environmental outcomes.

KidsCan ‘LIKE CHRISTMAS’ FOR KIDS It was a baking hot Northland summer’s day, but the preschoolers refused to take their new jackets off. For some, it was the first new piece of clothing they’d owned, and they grinned proudly at their own names written on the label. “It was like Christmas!” their teacher said.

M

any at this early childhood centre live in hardship, arriving in ill-fitting hand-me-downs, without enough food to fuel their little bodies through the day. But now they have support from KidsCan, as one of seven centres in Northland who are part of a new programme targeting vulnerable under-fives. Every child receives a raincoat, a pair of shoes, five fresh, healthy meals a week, snacks and head lice treatment. The change in the children has been significant, with teachers reporting happier, settled kids, and better attendance. Eleven more centres across the region have put their hands up for help. KidsCan CEO Julie Chapman says our tiniest children need more investment. “Child development experts say the preschool years are the most important, because they learn to love learning,” she says. “But when a child is hungry, their brain can’t engage. That’s a tragedy, because it’s education that will break the cycle of poverty.” Northland’s school kids have been benefiting from KidsCan help since the charity began 14 years ago. More than 100 schools are now supported across the region. This year alone students have received 2,440 raincoats, 1,340 pairs of shoes, 3,700 bottles of head lice treatment, and 1,600 boxes of sanitary items. Now, as well as breakfast, bread and snacks, they can also get a hot meal for lunch. KidsCan is sending out 22,900 servings of soups, butter chicken and pasta to Northland children this winter - something some can’t take for granted at home. “Winter is an especially miserable time for families in hardship,” Chapman says. “They’re surviving in cold, often overcrowded homes without enough to eat. It’s heartbreaking that for some students this is the only hot meal they get a day. “We want children to feel full, warm, and nurtured so they can enjoy learning. These simple things make such a difference to kids who don’t have much - and we’re so grateful to the Kiwis who care enough to help them.” Eleven early childhood centres and five schools in Northland are waiting for KidsCan support. BUDGETING FOR A NEW BABY The arrival of a new baby is an exciting event but can pull at your purse strings as well as your heart. If you are planning to extend your family, spare more than a passing thought to how this life-changing event will affect your finances. To help keep focused on your family rather than finances, planning ahead is the key.

Calculate your childcare costs. If you work, the second salary may be used up paying for childcare. Babies don’t stay that way for long so when you are making your baby budget it’s a good idea to look beyond your new

BRINGING BABY HOME A newborn baby in the house can be a real shock to the system. If you are a new mum, with little experience of babies or toddlers, you may find this a trying time! Most new mums go through the exact same thing – they can’t believe the sheer amount of work involved, the relentless lack of sleep and the constant worrying of whether you are ‘doing it right’. Sleep or lack of! You are not going to get a lot to start with. All mothers can’t wait for the night their baby sleeps through. It’s a breakthrough moment and a hot topic at mummy coffee groups. All babies are different and you may have the perfect eight-hour sleeper in the first three months or still be getting up in the middle of the night when they are a year old – you just never know. Sleep when your newborn sleeps Most mums will gladly fall into bed when baby goes off to sleep for a much deserved kip – small as it may be. It’s a good idea as looking after a baby’s needs is a full time, very tiring job. Don’t try to soldier on, give your body a break. Even a 10-minute power nap will help perk you up for the rest of the day. Or at least sit down with your feet up. Don’t try to be supermum Housework can take a back seat when you have a baby. It’s difficult for the house-proud to imagine, but finding the time to do housework with a baby at home can be a chore in itself! Some mums do their housework when baby sleeps, sacrificing their own sleep time and further tiring themselves out. As there’s often visitors to a newborn baby’s household, consider just keeping the living area clean and tidy. Try to have time out Most mums are reluctant to leave their precious baby for the first few months, but you will eventually get over that. Hopefully you have a partner or family and friends for support who will babysit while you go out for the odd night off. A trip to the gym, shopping or lunch with a friend will help boost energy levels and do you the world of good. The best part of babies is they just get even better as they get older. Things get easier every few months as babies grow into toddlers and you become an expert in figuring out their moods. 12 | SAVVY

• It’s all that your baby needs to eat and drink for about the first six months; • It helps to protect your baby against colds, tummy bugs, infections and allergies; and • It helps your baby to feel safe and secure. Breast milk is especially important for premature and critically-ill babies. In Christchurch, there is a Human Milk Bank which helps mothers who are unable to provide their babies with enough milk due to maternal illness, medication or low milk supply. Breastfeeding is perfect for you too because: • It gives you a chance to rest while you are feeding your baby, • It helps you to feel close to your baby, • It saves you time, • It’s free, and • It may reduce your risk of some cancers and bone disease. Breastfeeding is an important element in global health. The world’s leaders committed to 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015. These goals are aimed at ending poverty, protecting the planet and ensuring prosperity. Breastfeeding is linked in several ways to these goals, including: • Being a natural and low-cost way of

World Breastfeeding Week (August 1-7, 2019) is about how empowering parents enables breastfeeding now and in the future. Focusing on supporting both parents to be empowered is vital in order to realise their breastfeeding goals.

E

mpowerment is a process that requires evidence-based unbiased information and support to create the enabling environment where mothers can breastfeed optimally. Breastfeeding is in the mother’s domain. Breastfeeding improves when fathers, partners, families, workplaces, and communities support mothers. We can all support this process, as breastfeeding is a team effort. We all need to protect, promote and support breastfeeding.

World Breastfeeding Week 2019 aims to protect, promote and support breastfeeding through: • Parental social protection policies and legislation such as paid maternity and paternity leave; • Parent-friendly workplaces – so parents don’t have to choose between providing financially or caring for their family; and • Parent-friendly values and gender-equitable social norms – so that fathers can be involved caregivers too.

These measures promote optimal breastfeeding, health and wellbeing, as well as protect against discrimination at work. Gender-equitable parental social protection also advances the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). Breast milk is a natural, renewable food that is produced and delivered without pollution, packaging or waste. Breast milk is the perfect food for your baby because:

Formula feeding requires access to clean water, hygiene and sanitation; • Safeguarding infant health and nutrition in times of adversity and weather-related disasters due to global warming; • Support by society of mothers to breastfeed optimally, and to be in control of how she feeds her baby – to give every child a fair and best start in life; and • Supporting breastfeeding mothers who work outside the home to manage challenges, such as having crèches near the workplace, lactation rooms and breastfeeding breaks.

e think you’ll love our collections of gorgeous real clothing that are fresh and unpredictable in fabrics that demand to be touched. We think you’ll love the dramatic colours, the calm contrasts, the monochromatic tones and blanc on blanc combinations that are trending this season. We’d like to invite you to come in store and play, because nothing beats trying stuff on. Also, nothing beats the good old-fashioned customer service that goes with it. The type of service where you’re greeted by your first name, not your customer number, the type of service where you’re offered experienced choices and given critical feedback. Nothing beats ‘the shopping experience.’ At Polwarth Design every day is a shopping experience. We never know who is going to walk in the door with an event that needs solving, an occasion that challenges or a journey that inspires us and we run with it. With 34 years on the front line of retail clothing, we have accumulated an amazing number of stories from people sharing their experiences of shopping with us. Here are just a few examples: • “I love the fact that when I buy something from Polwarth Design, I don’t see it walking down the street, in four different sizes and colours.” • “I can walk into Polwarth Design and say: ‘Dress me”, knowing that I will get 100 per cent attention and more. They treat me like I’m one of their potential models about to strut down the catwalk, so my overall look has to tick all the boxes right down to the

scarf, handbag and shoes. They know that our biggest critics won’t be them, it’ll be our sisters, best friends, husbands (if we’ve schooled them up), work colleagues, our mothers or the old aunts. So, when they say ‘it looks good”, it needs to look good!!!” • “I’m not a snob, but I like clothes that have a lasting edge and price isn’t usually an issue. It’s great to go somewhere where the staff remember what you’ve purchased over the last ten years, know what needs ditching or what new things will compliment.” • “Everything I’ve bought from Polwarth Design goes the distance and even more so if I take on the girls’ advice about zipper storage bags for merino to beat the crickets, or freezing my jeans! That’s a new one on me! I’m going to trial both this spring.” • “If I’ve ever had an issue with a purchase, the girls will always try to sort it out. The outcome can be a garment replacement, an instore credit or a full refund, whatever suits the purpose. Happy customers tell other customers, unhappy customers do the same and we prefer positive wraps to negative ones.” Our customers are our greatest advocates and we welcome you all to our home at Polwarth Design. We’ve been sharing it with you decades and still love it. Maybe we should get that coffee machine or open a little wine cellar as well.

FOUR BAG TRENDS THAT ARE IN FOR 2019 All It-bags we’ve known and loved... and stuck in the back of a closet once the allure has worn off. And while some It-styles do make a comeback, most are long-forgotten and buyers are moving on to something new.

UTILITY BAGS There is a desire for handbags that offer function and convenience and the belt bag is ultimate in this category. The hands-free trend has grown over the last few years but it’s establishing itself as a wardrobe staple. Essentially, the belt bag started out as a street style cool-kid look and now it’s been elevated for a sophisticated audience. It has transcended from a youthful moment to offering chic practicality. Beyond the belt bag, it’s all about utility in general - backpacks and multi-pocketed silhouettes are

The structured silhouette appeals to consumers with classic taste looking for a timeless handbag. One way to get that ‘60s vibe is with textured leathers like stamped croc and python. The style lends itself to the buyers who like investment pieces, but also to the person who is very trend-driven. And if you can’t drop major cash for real python, it’s okay. Brands have also really mastered

ALWAYS SOMETHING FOR THE MEN

For some people it’s all about a technicolour play. Colours like orange and lime green are having a real trend moment. Designers like Fendi, Chanel, and others speckled their runway with bold bags in saturated hues. If anything, do it for the ‘gram. These colours are gaining

a lot of traction on social media — it looks cool. GEOMETRIC SHAPES It might feel natural to reach for a rectangular handbag, but sometimes you can think outside of the box — literally. Shape shifters are emerging as the newest bag trend. From circles to trapezes, this style is a whimsical take on the tailored bag. The exaggerated, novelty shapes in structured leather create lust-worthy art pieces.

TAKE THE ‘DOUBLE’ OUT OF YOUR CHIN

Fullness under the chin, or ‘double chin’, is a common concern for both men and women. It can be caused by aging, genetics or weight gain. Sometimes, no matter how much you diet or exercise, you can’t get rid of the fullness in this area. A double chin may make you feel like you look older and heavier than you actually are. BELKYRA® is the only FDA-approved non-surgical injectable treatment that eliminates fat cells under the chin. It contains a patented formulation of deoxycholic acid, an acid that is a naturally-occurring substance in our bodies used to digest fat in our diets. In the hands of an expert injector BELKYRA® is injected into the submental area and the deoxycholic acid works to destroy the fat cell membrane allowing the fat to be dissolved out of the body. The reason for such popularity and notoriety is that this treatment is the first non-invasive treatment that is quick and effective in treating excess fat accumulation under the chin. This treatment is very successful in treating the submental pocket

of fat that is difficult to target and can leave patients feeling frustrated and self-conscious.

suggest scheduling work and social events outside of the expected treatment down times, just in case.

Is Belkyra right for me? Belkyra treatment is designed to target ‘submental fullness’ or stubborn fat cells, not loose skin. The ideal candidate will have minimal excess skin around the neck and chin area. The first step is a pre-procedure consultation with a qualified injector to assess your suitability for this treatment and discuss possible outcomes and risks.

What side effects can Belkyra cause? Possible side effects may include headaches, difficulty swallowing, nausea, skin tightness and hypertension. It is also completely normal to feel a loose or jiggly feeling underneath the chin. Possible side effects to the injection site include bruising, pain, swelling, numbness, redness, tingling, itching, discolouration, formation of small areas of hardness/warmth and temporary injection site nerve injury.

How many treatments are needed? Many people treated with Belkyra see visible improvements in the appearance of their chin profile after 2-4 treatments. Sessions are spaced usually about eight weeks apart and a maximum of six treatments may be given. Fat dissolving takes time – it is a marathon, not a sprint – and it’s important to understand Belkyra treatment is not a one-off treatment. Once the desired results are achieved, re-treatment is not expected as results are maintained long-term. How long does treatment take? Total treatment time is around 45 minutes. The treatment area is marked and local anaesthetic injections administered. The active product (Belkyra) is then injected into the fat under the skin. Is there any downtime with BELKYRA®? Downtime usually occurs after the first treatment where you will notice some stinging and swelling post treatment. During the treatment you will feel some stinging or pain at the injection site which can last for a couple of days. Subsequent treatments have less downtime. However, most patients find they have some swelling for the week after their treatments. We always

Can BELKYRA® be combined with other injectable treatments? YES! BELKYRA® is a great compliment to Botox, fillers, Sculptra®, IPL and laser treatments which will help to smooth and tighten the neck and your overall features. BELKYRA® injection is a prescription medicine containing 10 mg/mL deoxycholic acid. It is used for the improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe convexity or fullness associated with submental fat in adults. Do not use in people allergic to this medicine, with infection at site of injection, pregnancy and lactation. Possible side effects include headaches, difficulty swallowing, nausea, skin tightness, hypertension, injection site bruising/ pain/ swelling/ numbness/ redness/ tingling/ hardness/ itching/ discolouration/ formation of small areas of hardness/ warmth and injection site nerve injury. BELKYRA® treatment is not funded on the New Zealand Pharmaceutical Schedule. You will need to pay for this medicine. Normal Doctors visit fees apply. BELKYRA® treatment should be administered only by trained medical professionals. Speak to your specialist about your own situation and about the benefits/risks of this procedure in appearance medicine. For further information, the Data Sheet and Consumer Medicines Information can be accessed at www.medsafe.govt.nz or ask your doctor. If you have any side effects or concerns speak to your doctor. BEAUTY

Hair Tips from NAK HAIR NAK Hair is an Australian-made and owned haircare company, with a down-to-earth culture running through their veins. Dedicated to creating beautiful haircare for everyone.

MEDIUM HAIR If you have medium textured hair your hair will have a combination of needs, often healthy roots and dehydrated mid lengths and ends. The individual strands will feel normal textured; medium textured hair usually requires increased moisture to help manage the condition due to its wider diameter. NAK Signature Hydrate Shampoo and Conditioner will provide balance for the needs of drier strands with newer roots.

FINE HAIR Fine hair refers to hair that is very fine in diameter. Density refers to the number of strands on the entire scalp. In fact, you can have fine textured hair with a medium density. Each single hair strand has a sebaceous gland attached to it and, therefore, fine hair will appear oily, limp and flat more quickly than other textures. Fine hair is best shampooed with NAK Volume Shampoo and Conditioner each day.

COARSE HAIR Coarse hair is more difficult to manage and often feels rough or dry to touch. Coarse hair can be naturally frizzy, dry and problematic. The diameter of coarse hair strands is the largest of all textures, making it vulnerable to moisture evaporation and dry parched ends. We recommend using rich emollient textured creams and smoothing serums to tame frizz and quench the feel of dry rough hair. Choose from NAK Signature Nourish Shampoo and Conditioner or select from our exquisitely replenishing products from the Luxe Botanical range Aromas.

ADAPTABILITY COUNTS FOR

HOSPITALITY BUSINESS Northland Hospitality is celebrating 25 years in business this August

The friendly team is here to look after all your cooking and hospitality needs

Max and Judy Hutchings

For owners Max and Judy Hutchings, it’s a milestone that highlights for them the tenacity and adaptability that they have needed to build the business over the years as a supplier to a notoriously difficult industry. The couple left behind a dairy farming background in Dargaville and Max started work as a wine distributor. Eventually he decided to start up his own business. Max says from those early beginnings keeping outlets supplied with wine, the hospitality side of the business grew. Judy says people holding events would ask where they could find any nice glasses and Max would source them.

In 1996 they moved to 117 Lower Dent street and their showroom was a few shelves in a tiny display area in the front of the building. Gradually business increased and they were looking for a bit more space. In 2002 Max and Judy decided to move to a new building across the road at 106 Lower Dent Street next to the then Northland Brewery which gave them the space they needed to operate more smoothly and efficiently. When supermarket wine sales encroached on their business, the couple decided to diversify into coffee as they saw its popularity growing. By 2010 they had stopped selling wine altogether.

The business now offers all things coffee and kitchen-related, from different varieties of coffee beans and a big range of coffee machines both commercial and domestic. “We’ve got a wide range of kitchen ware for home and commercial catering, pots and pans, commercial ovens, crockery etc right down to the teaspoons to stir your coffee with, ’’ Judy says. Their commercial equipment, coffee machines and coffee can be found in cafes, restaurants, canteens, schools and Hospitality Training Institutes from Wellsford to Kaitaia. The huge popularity of coffee has meant that they are now more known as a coffee distributor. “Coffee is the second largest consumable traded in the world by value,’’ Max says. Coffee beans are freshly ground on site to specific

orders every week and is packed into 250g, 1kg and 2kg bags. “Our retail customers know that they can have their coffee ground to their own specific requirements.” Northland Hospitality even has their own Kauri blend which generates 50 cents per kg donated to the Pukenui Trust, an organisation that Max has been a volunteer with for many years. “The ideal time for coffee is between eight and 21 days after roasting, as that is when it will taste the best,’’ he says. Tea is now becoming popular and they also sell a lot of syrups for hot chocolates, frappes and smoothies.

Northland Hospitality operate a barista training programme, so many Northland café staff have been trained at Northland Hospitality by Robert Tadman and Dylan Tadman, who are now looking to run regular training sessions for not only commercial enterprises but home coffee machine owners too. A new training facility has been set up in their mezzanine area.

“It helps to lift the quality of coffee making in Northland,’’ Max says.

They also run the Altura Northland Barista Competition which is keenly contested among coffee makers. The event is held over two days in conjunction with the Home Show and features international judges from the coffee industry.

They credit their longstanding and loyal staff with the success of the business. “Our staff, Robert, Dylan and Terri, are amazing. Everyone is hands on and has the expertise to be able to step in to help with any part of the business.”

Another aspect of the business is the design and fitting out of commercial kitchens.

HEALTH

Taking the mystery out of conjunctivitis If you have conjunctivitis, it means the lining of your inner eyelids and the whites of your eyes (the conjunctiva) is red and swollen. It can make your eyes sticky and irritated.

Conjunctivitis is sometimes called ‘sticky eye’ or ‘pink eye’. It can be caused by a bacterial or viral infection, chemical irritation, ultraviolet burn or an allergy. In new-borns, the cause may be incompletely opened tear-drainage ducts. Infected (Viral/Bacterial) conjunctivitis is contagious. Children with conjunctivitis should not go to school or daycare until discharge has stopped. If your child’s eyes are watery but not red, then they may have a blocked tear duct. If this is the case, then they are not contagious, and it is ok for them to go to school or day care. Infected conjunctivitis often comes when dirty fingers, towels, handkerchiefs, or facecloths touch the eye. Symptoms appear 2–10 days (usually 3–4 days) after you catch conjunctivitis. • If you or a family member has infected conjunctivitis, the white part of your eye will be red and feel gritty. • This is followed by a clear, green or yellow discharge from your eye which forms a crust overnight and can make your eyelids stick together in the morning. Bacterial infection usually occurs in both eyes and produces more discharge. Viral infection (Very common) is more likely to be in just one eye with only a slight discharge and may go along with other symptoms like a sore throat. The eye will usually be bright red (but sometimes only mildly red), uncomfortable, and watery, frequently with puffy eyelids. There is often a tender lymph node the size of a pea just in front of the ear.

Allergic conjunctivitis Allergic conjunctivitis is caused by an allergy to pollen, cosmetics or other substances. If you or a family member has allergic conjunctivitis, your eye will be red and itchy but without any yellow discharge. If it’s worse in the pollen season, it’s a form of hay fever. • The eye is mildly red and bloodshot and there may be a clear discharge that makes it feel sticky. • If you pull down your lower eyelid you will clearly see redness in the lower eyelid lining. • It will be itchy. ‘Sticky eye’ in infants Infants often develop ‘sticky eye’ as their tear ducts are tiny and can easily get blocked. When this happens a clear or white sticky fluid collects in the eye. If the eye isn’t red or inflamed, this doesn’t usually need treatment. When to see your doctor If you are worried about your eyes, or if you have: • moderate to severe eye pain • sensitivity to light (photophobia) • any blurred or reduced vision • any injury to the eye (such as being hit or scratched), or chemicals in the eye • a fever and are generally unwell • increased swelling, redness, and tenderness in the eyelids and around the eye

Allergic conjunctivitis There is itching and redness of the eye, swelling of the conjunctiva and eyelid.

Viral conjunctivitis Redness of the eyes and periodic itching, increased lacrimation.

Treatment See your doctor, you may need antibiotics if you have an infection, or antihistamines if you have allergic conjunctivitis. Self-care for infected conjunctivitis • Take care to avoid spreading the infection. • Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes. • Don’t share facecloths or towels with others. • Wash your hands often and use paper towels for drying. • If you have viral conjunctivitis it will usually disappear on its own. • If you have bacterial conjunctivitis, your doctor may prescribe antibiotic drops or ointment. conjunctivitis. These should be applied to your eyes after gently washing away any discharge from your eyelids with warm water. Use the medicine as directed. Children should stay away from school or day care while there is discharge from the eyes. Self-care for allergic conjunctivitis Avoid eye make-up. Your doctor or pharmacist will be able to recommend eye drops or other antihistamine medication.

Using eye drops • Wash your hands carefully. • Remove any discharge from your eye with a clean tissue. • If your eye has crusty discharge around it, wet a cloth with warm water and place this over your eye for a minute. Soak a cotton ball in warm water and gently wipe your eye from the nose side outward. Using a new cotton wool ball each time, continue doing this until your eye is clear. Use a new cotton ball for the other eye. • Tip your head back or lie on a flat surface. • Gently pull down your lower eyelid and position the bottle so the drop will fall into your lower eyelid, not directly on the eyeball. • Close your eye and blink to help spread the medication around your eye. • Wipe any extra drops away with a tissue. Using eye ointments • When both drops and ointment are needed, do the drops first. If the ointment is used once daily, apply it at bedtime as it can blur your vision. • Gently pull down your lower eyelid with the opposite hand. • Position the nozzle at the inner part of your eye near your nose. • Don’t let the tip of the ointment tub touch your eye or lashes. • Squeeze a 1cm ribbon of ointment onto the inside of your lower eyelid. Begin at the side of your eye near your nose and move towards the outer edge of your eye. • Give the tube a half-turn. This helps ‘cut’ the ribbon of medicine.

If there was a new drug that reduced anxiety, suppressed urges to overeat, and gave you more selfconfidence, would you take it? What if it also helped you be more productive and made it easier to relax?

E

xercise is that drug and it’s a double banger concept as, while you are getting physical results, you are also freeing your mind. Exercise is not just about aerobic capacity and muscle strength. Sure, it can improve your physical health, keep your weight in check, make you stronger, and keeps you feeling youthful no matter your age. But that’s not what motivates most people to stay active. Did you know that exercise can also make you a calmer, happier person? People who exercise regularly tend to do so because it gives them an enormous sense of well-being. They feel more energetic throughout the day, sleep better at night, have sharper memories, and feel more relaxed and positive about themselves and their lives. It’s a powerful medicine for many common mental health challenges, but how often do you consider the contribution of physical exercise to your mental health? Studies show that exercise can treat anxiety and depression as effectively as antidepressant medication - but without the side-effects, of course.

Exercise is a powerful depression fighter. It promotes all kinds of changes in the brain, including neural growth, reduced inflammation, and new activity patterns that promote feelings of calm and well-being. It also releases endorphins, powerful chemicals in your brain that energize your spirits and make you feel good. Also, exercise can serve as a distraction, allowing you to find some quiet time to break out of the cycle of negative thoughts that feed depression.

feel strong and powerful. By meeting even small exercise goals, you will feel a sense of achievement. • More energy - Increasing your heart rate several times a week will give you more getup-and-go. Start off with just a few minutes of exercise per day and increase the time as you become more energized. • Stronger resilience - When faced with mental or emotional challenges in life, exercise can help you cope in a healthy way, instead of resorting to negative behaviors that ultimately only make your symptoms worse. • It’s okay to start small. In fact, it’s smart. When you’re under the cloud of an emotional disorder and feeling ‘blue’ has robbed you of the energy and motivation to work out, setting extravagant goals like working out for an hour every morning will only

leave you more despondent if you fall short. Better to set achievable goals and build up from there. As you move and start to feel a little better, you will experience a greater sense of control over your well-being giving you that pep that makes you want to get out of bed in the morning and do things. And, when you feel fantastic, everything else in life seems so much easier. You will feel like you can leap tall buildings in a single leap!

Other mental and emotional benefits of exercise • Sharper memory and thinking. The same endorphins that make you feel better also help you concentrate and feel mentally sharp for tasks at hand. Exercise also stimulates the growth of new brain cells and helps prevent age-related decline. • Higher self-esteem - Regular activity is an investment in your mind, body, and soul. When it becomes habit, it can foster your sense of self-worth and make you

SUNSHINE AND SKIN

SPF vs. UVB Protection

– PART II

L

ast month I talked about protecting your skin even in winter and on cloudy days. This month, I’d like to touch on the subject of SPF (sun protection factor). There is a general belief that sunscreens with a higher SPF gives proportionately more protection. This couldn’t be further from the truth. As can be seen from the graph, a sunscreen with an SPF 15 gives a 93 per cent protection. Increase the SPF to 50 by more than doubling the active ingredients, and you only get an extra five per cent protection. This

is a trade-off most people aren’t willing to make once they understand it. Having more active ingredients in a sunscreen is not always a good thing. These ingredients work by absorbing the UV rays to prevent them hitting the skin cells. In the process of absorbing and neutralising the UV rays, these ingredients turn into free radicals which then present a different set of problems to the skin. So, a good sunscreen should also have a good dose of antioxidants to combat this issue. More on ingredients next month.

Who’s that voice in my head?

W

e all have that little voice in our head that is over-critical, and sometimes downright horrible. It’s the voice that says you’re not good enough, that you aren’t lovable, the voice who compares you to others, or who seems to always find a way to bring you down. I call it the inner critic. The inner critic is something we all hear and struggle with throughout our life and is often the main thing holding us back from going after what we truly want. The reason it’s so powerful is because it’s part of the

human condition and played a huge role in our evolutionary survival - to protect us from physical or emotional harm. Over time, even though our immediate dangers have decreased, it still pops up in situations where it feels the need to keep you safe, so it says critical things that will stop you in your tracks or deter you from moving forward, regardless of whether it’s true or not. Because it’s always there, the majority of us have never taken the time to truly acknowledge or understand it, and we’ve become so accustomed to hearing it, that it’s now a full-time resident in our minds dictating how we think, feel, and behave. So, what can we do about it? Although we can’t get rid of this voice, we can learn how to manage it, starting with these four simple steps. 1. Recognise it – notice when you hear the inner critic, and consciously choose to separate yourself from its voice. You are simply the person listening to it. When does it pop up? What situations/people tend to trigger it? By learning how to distinguish its voice from your own, you’ll become more aware of when it’s in action. 2. Acknowledge it – the worst thing you can do is argue with your inner critic, therefore simply listen. What’s it saying to you? What are some of its most frequentlyvoiced beliefs/thoughts?

If you would like to live life with more joy, and experience a more positive and empowered mindset, book your free 30-minute consultation in today.

26 | SAVVY

Another fact that is not widely known is that the SPF measure only applies to UVB – the shorter UV rays that reach the epidermis (top layer of the skin) that is responsible for redness, inflammation and burns. The measure does not apply to UVA – the longer, more insidious rays that can penetrate the skin down to the dermis damaging collagen and elastin tissues (please see Part I in the last issue). So, choosing a sunscreen based on SPF alone is not enough as you are only protected against UVB. Look for one with a broadspectrum protection guarding against both UVB and UVA.

Sarah is an internationally-certified Health and Lifestyle Coach, passionate about helping you live your best life - a life that’s healthier, happier, and way more fulfilling.

3. Understand its motives – the inner critic kicks into gear when it feels you need to be protected, therefore identify what fear or doubt is driving it to say these things to you? What need is it trying to meet, by making you believe what it has to say? 4. Choose YOUR way forward – ask yourself if what it’s saying to you is true or useful? Is it serving you in moving forward with your life in a healthy way? If not… What would be a more useful and empowering thing to say to yourself in this moment? By actively going through these four steps, your inner critic will become a familiar, and even amusing, background noise, rather than an authoritative voice that holds you back from stepping into your brilliance and living a life you dream of.

MOTORING

Check out the new BMW 3 Series

T

he BMW 3 Series has been launched in NZ. While fans are flocking to BMW’s SUV range, there is a core member of the German line-up that will soon be garnering customer attention - the 3 Series sedan. First launched in 1975 the seventhgeneration 3 Series has just gone on sale in New Zealand with two models initially until the line-up gets more variants. The first products are the 2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder diesel producing 140kW of power and 400Nm of torque with a price tag of $77,500. The 2-litre petrol starts at $89,900 and has 190kW of power and 400Nm of torque. The new-look 3 Series retains the double kidney grille but is wider with the addition of the Hofmeister kink iconic design now part of the C-pillar. The 3 Series is lighter by 55kg than the previous model but larger with a longer wheelbase. The suspension and drivetrain use more aluminium than before and the bonnet and front wings are aluminium too, hence the weight loss. The 320d sits on 18in alloys, has adaptive suspension plus wireless charging while the 330i has 19in alloys and parking assistant plus. Joining the two later this year will be the 320i, 330e and the 340i before the M model and touring. The 3 Series has dominated sales globally with more than 15 million sold and over the

years creating and dominating the premium sedan market. At the New Zealand launch BMW said, “it’s the most important vehicle for the brand historical but times are changing, buyer preferences are changing.” And like the A-Class, BMW is appealing to new buyers, thanks to its class-leading technology. When it comes to road safety the 3 Series

gets the driving assistance including narrow passage support that recognises road works ahead and helps you navigate the road. Like the BMW X5, the 3 Series gets reversing assistant that works by noting how you enter a car park space and will back out for you. It’s ideal for narrow car park spots. Available for first time in 3 Series are optional laser lights that see up to 530m

ahead, double the range of LED headlight. Another option is acoustic glazing in the front windows and windscreen to help reduce road noise. Inside the 3 Series, it has a live cockpit via a SIM card with a touchscreen that allows you to pick widgets to be displayed on it. BMW’s intelligent personal assistant after a week will learn your habits, be it having heated seats on, your drive route or cabin temperature and ask you if you require that setting. The system operates by saying “hey BMW” (or you can change its name to whatever you want), and it will set functions such as navigation, change radio stations, set your temperature (by just saying “I’m hot”) and call numbers. This Siri and Alexa-style automated assistance is great for keeping drivers’ eyes on the road. But due to this increase in technology, 3 Series buyers may need to return to their dealership a few times to get some lessons on how to use it, says BMW NZ. “The 3 series is grown up. It’s a much larger car and has more technology. To assist with such technology dealerships have a product genius to explain any functions to buyers. When it comes to the road, the seventh generation gains suspension and ride handling from its bigger siblings. It’s an easy vehicle to adapt to as a daily commuter. Inside the cabin, there is a layer of premium feel while the new cockpit and infotainment screen gives a more refined look.

ne of the best-known motorcycles out of the sixty-five classic motorcycles on view at the Packard Motor Museum is the Ariel Square Four. These bikes were built from 1931 through to 1959. The Square Four power plant was designed by Edward Turner when he joined Ariel in 1928. Fishing tips & tales with John Vowless

Phil Newman shows there’s great results underwater at this time of year.

T

he fishing is nearly always a bit harder over the colder months but, with a bit of planning and a bit more effort, you can still get a good feed. In the Whangarei area, some good snapper, trevally, kingfish and terakihi are being caught; the Hen and Chicken and Mokahinau Islands and surrounding reefy areas have been fishing well. Heading north, both coasts are providing reasonable catches, and torpedos have been very effective. Rock fishing and surfcasting at this time of year can produce big snapper and trevally in close. Use big oily baits, without sinkers when rock fishing, and strong lines to reduce the big fish cutting you off on the rocks, smaller hooks/baits for hard-fighting trevally. If you own a net, there should be a few mullet in our harbours as well - great smoked and a very good snapper bait, especially the gills and gut. Wrap the line around this bait to hold it together and use two big number 7 or 8 hooks - Can be BIG SNAPPER magic! In all our northern areas, great-eating gurnard become available at this time of year. Whangarei tackle expert Alan Smith knows a great rig for this delicacy: Braid line attached

to a sinker and a terakihi terror flasher rig below the sinker, on the end of the terakihi terror, attach a softbait, drift fish with a sea anchor out and let the baits drag along the bottom well behind the boat. This keeps the baits right on the bottom where the gurnard feed. Gurnard will also take a softbait and so will any snapper lurking around. Smaller shellfish or salted bonito baits work well. While drifting, put out a similar rig with bigger hooks and baits and also drag these behind the boat but much further back, snapper being the target. And if you are really keen while you are drifting (in 10 metres or more), softbait or lure fish directly under the boat, a lot of lines out, but can produce good catches and be a lot of fun. In the Whangarei area, fish this method out from the Ruakaka beach, out in front off the LVL plant and the two river mouths are good starting points. A gentle offshore breeze is best. Start your drift in about 6m of water and drift out into deeper water. This can work in up to about 20m deep. Out around Three Mile Reef and the Fairway buoy can also be productive. Tight Lines.

RANGATAHI RAW - bringing together Comedy and Northland Youth

aughty North Comedy Club is bringing the big-time to Northland schools with Rangatahi Raw, a stand-up comedy competition for 15-17-year-olds. Six schools will compete in the inaugural year to have one of their students crowned the overall winner. Participants will build their own six-minute set and perform first in front of industry professionals and touring comics, have access to Naughty North gigs and eventually progress to the semi-finals at the Butter Factory in Whangarei. The ‘best of the best’ head to Forum North on October 4 to the final in front of a crowd of hundreds in the Capitane Bougainville Theatre.

Oliver Scripps

The Rangatahi Raw programme is all about producing comedic excellence in Northland’s youth, building the skills to overcome challenges and offering challenges to be overcome. In 2020 Rangatahi Raw hopes to expand to the whole Northland region, offering the experience to all youth in Northland, regardless of location or means. The project is lead by Oliver Scripps, proud son of Northland, and the driving force behind ‘Naughty North’. Having cut his teeth in the Wellington and Auckland comedy scenes, as well as some overseas jaunts; Oliver recently returned home to Whangarei and started Naughty North Comedy Club at The Butter Factory, a

monthly show featuring Aotearoa’s best comedians and up-andcoming locals. Creative Northland is proudly sponsoring this program in order to support new creative opportunities for youth in the Northland area. The artforms of spoken word, performance and comedy are natural fits for as yet un-recognised talent of youth across Northland. Through the Rangatahi Raw program with access to and guidance from experienced comedians, Creative Northland believes the youth involved will gain valuable skills including confidence and resilience to take their passions that one step further.

popular novel is coming to life on the Whangarei stage next week before it hits the theatre in Auckland. Essays in Love is a new piece of theatre based on the acclaimed novel of the same name and makes its debut at ONEONESIX in Whangarei from August 6-10. The production is the first collaboration between Bruce Mason award-winning writer Eli Kent, and MAD PROJECTS’ director Oliver Driver. Oliver is the former artistic director of Auckland Theatre Company and well known from his work as an actor in Under The Mountain, Shortland Street and Black Sheep. After more than two years of development, Oliver is thrilled to be bringing his passion project to ONEONESIX in Whangarei. “I remember reading the novel about 10 years ago and, well, falling in love with it. Its structure is so theatrical, the jumping around in time and space and the long brilliantly funny tangents it goes on. It read in many ways like an extended riff, I immediately thought it would make a great piece of solo performance.” The stage adaptation of the Alain Debotton novel, Essays in Love follows the journey of the recently-dumped Otto, an academic, as he

Is it your diet, or your decor?

What do food and appetite have in common? Turns out, a lot!

H

ow hard is it to watch what you eat? Hard! You know you shouldn’t eat a whole pizza, but something internally says you just have to, and naturally, you oblige. But you aren’t alone, there is a little ‘something’ that eggs everyone on one way or another. Just what is that ‘something’ - and more importantly, how can you tune it out? When crafting a diet plan, you consider several elements: lifestyle, exercise routine, metabolism, etc. However, have you stopped to consider the external factors? It’s not just about individual foods and workout routines, it’s also about what you see around the house. More specifically, it’s the very colour of the kitchen or pantry. Believe it or not, but the tones we see in everyday life have a big impact on the subconscious. And one of those impacts includes appetite. That little voice inside your head therefore isn’t just controlled by a hunger demon but may also be influenced by colour. A little grey makes the appetite go away.

The power of colour FitDay fitness blog explains that there have been several scientific studies conducted over the years to identify the specifics of how colours can be perceived as either appetising or not. This same research has been used by marketers of popular restaurants to get customers in the door to eat and buy more food. Red, such as Resene Jalapeno, has the power to make you ravenous. Colours that make you hungry Think about the most popular fast food joints in the world. What colours do they fly? Bright reds or yellows are almost always incorporated in logos of fast food outlets. This is because red has the power to make you ravenous, and works with yellow to stimulate that appetite further, explains Shape magazine. After getting through the rest of the diet plan, consider different colours in the kitchen. It could just be the key to staying on track! Redesigning plan Just like colour can get the stomach grumbling, the body can also use it to suppress hunger. If you really want to manage your snack cravings, then a little kitchen makeover might be the last piece of your diet plan. FitDay notes that blue, pink and grey tones, such as Resene Wedgewood, Resene Paper Doll and Resene Stack have all been proven to curb appetites. Pink is typically what people associate with raw and inedible foods, while blue and grey are unnatural food colours, so they don’t tend to encourage hunger. While paint colour can’t control weight, the right colour in the right place can make a space more or less conducive to eating.

leading roles. Winter also offers the opportunity to invest in cocoon-worthy bedding. Duvet fillings range from bamboo and wool, to microfibre and cotton, with weights anything from 175gsm to 600gsm (grams per square metre). The higher the gsm the warmer the duvet, so for winterweight duvets it pays to choose something over 400gsm for snuggle factor. For extra luxe, add a faux-fur throw - these are extremely comforting in the winter months and great to hide behind when watching scary movies on stormy nights. Fireplaces are the ultimate winter cocooning accessory but if you don’t have one, electric fireplaces are another great option. These are heaters with theatrical “fire” displays, and although somewhat gauche, even fake flickering flames can warm the heart. Some models even come with a smoke effect (which wouldn’t be pleasant in the lounge if it was real) but adds to the ambience. With so many accessories available, winter is the perfect excuse for decking out the house in snuggly style. All you need is a computer with a streaming service, Uber Eats as a favourite on your phone, and a comfy couch or bed, and you’re set for a winter of blissful cocooning. It’s just a pity there isn’t a wine-delivery app; that way you’d really never need to leave the house after work, or when it’s dark outside.

“Bluetooth mirrors with LED lighting have made a major splash into the bathroom-design world, not to mention LED strip lighting, smart toilets, under-tile heating and built-in speakers, just to mention a few.” Star performer: Five-star hotel bathrooms are the stuff of dreams. So, why not recreate the ambience for your own ensuite? Mr Nasrallah has knocked down walls between ensuites and bedrooms to create one open space, placed freestanding baths in the middle of bedrooms, and mounted TVs on ceilings so clients don’t miss their favourite programme while relaxing in their newly located bath.

Metals in bathrooms are also being found in greater variation nowadays. “Metal in patinas and all shades and finishes has pushed away the old chrome tapware and has made a huge impact on our new bathrooms.”

Light touch: Well-thought-out lighting is an important aspect of any bathroom. Ideally, you need to choose the right brightness and warmth of light for the right locations, and include the ability to tone it all down when you want a relaxing soak at the end of a long week. “We are seeing a move towards mood lighting, with the addition of wall sconces, dimmer switches and LED strip lighting moving us away from the standard LED downlights we have become accustomed to.” Comfort zone: Besides the advances in lighting, a host of other new technologies is increasing comfort and convenience in the bathroom.

Of course, for a relatively simple, on-trend, luxury touch, Mr Nasrallah had this tip. “Don’t forget that dual vanity, which is a must-have in every 21st-century ensuite.” In the know: Following the latest trends in a bathroom is all well and good, but Mr Nasrallah cautioned renovators about jumping in and renovating without professional advice. A lack of proper waterproofing, for instance, can have devastating effects on plaster and sometimes on a home’s timber framework. “With the explosion of home-renovation programs on TV, we are finding that a lot of people believe they can do it themselves without the help of a designer or builder. “What they don’t know is that behind the scenes, these programs have qualified professionals helping the contestants make design and building choices. If your bathroom boasts a leaky shower, unflattering lighting and styling that hails from the 90s, you’re not alone. But when taking that first reno step, there’s no need to worry whether the new finishes and fittings you choose will quickly date. Interior designer Alan Nasrallah said every product and material had its expiry date. “Trends come and go. We tell our clients to just go for it - be in the now and indulge yourself in your favourite colours, materials and finishes,” Mr Nasrallah said. “By the time those materials you have selected are not on trend, it’ll be time for you to renovate your bathroom again.”

YOUR MINDFUL HOME

– KIDS’ SPACES

W

hen asked to write Your Mindful Home with a nod to our kids and in the middle of winter school holidays, my initial reaction was that of despair. What could possibly be relaxing and mindful about having two kids tearing through the house while it’s pouring with rain outside? After a little bit of thought and research, mainly having coffee dates with other mamas in the same situation, this is what we have come up with. Our homes are also our children’s homes. Sounds silly I know, but how much ownership do we give our babes to make their own space? Whether it is their own bedrooms or a space for themselves in the lounge or shared room. Kids have varying interests which change from week to week and year to year so I tend to think that when styling children’s spaces, timelessness and a little bit of neutrality should play a part. It is easy to change up soft furnishings

and toys as their wants and needs change, less easy to remove huge wall stickers or painted features when your little one decides that they are now too old for Disney! Try taking your children to the shops to choose their own bedding or artwork, they may need some subtle encouraging away from certain designs, but it could be a fun way to spend some time talking about their new space. Even better, make something together for their new rooms! We have written previously about using baskets for storage in children’s spaces and this is honestly the best piece of advice we can give. Baskets can be used for toys, shoes, dirty washing, clean washing, sports gear, Lego, drawing equipment, the list is endless. And the best part, it is easy for your kids to pack things away back into a basket and pop it on the shelf or under the bed. Win-win I say. Allowing your kids to choose some of their own style for their space should, in theory, help them take ownership of the area and hopefully keep it tidy! As always, we love to encourage people to make decisions about their homes based on their values and what makes them happy. Choosing sustainably made toys, bedding and other products for your babes can spark some amazing conversations around ethical production and how we can all do our part to make their world just a little bit brighter. Until next time.

Are you grumpy, yawning a lot and struggling to make it through the afternoon? Chances are you aren’t getting enough sleep. While it sometimes feels impossible to get the recommended 7-9 hours sleep a night, it’s essential as it helps your body restore itself physically and mentally and prepare you for the next day. So how do you know if you aren’t getting enough sleep? Here are seven signs which may indicate you need some more shut-eye:

find your waistline expanding due to the increase in calories. Also, a lack of energy makes it harder to exercise during the day, therefore leading to weight gain. 4. You look rough Do you have dark circles under your eyes? Is your skin dull and unhealthy looking? When you sleep, your body repairs damaged cells so not enough sleep can really show on your face. 5. Lower libido

1. Bad mood Lack of sleep can make you grumpy, impatient and less tolerant. It can make you feel more stressed out and less able to cope with things. Sleep is linked to your mental health – if you’re not getting enough sleep, you’re more likely to feel depressed and anxious.

Signs you aren’t getting enough sleep Here at Beds R Us Whangarei, we’re all about helping Northlanders sleep better to live better. We are specializing in beds and mattresses. It’s our core business and we know it better than anyone. Most importantly, we’ve learned how to guide our customers through the purchase process to find their dream bed simply and enjoyably.

2. Trouble concentrating/emotional We all know that feeling of not being able to concentrate due to not enough sleep. A lack of sleep also makes it difficult to make decisions and remember things. This can affect your productivity at work, ability to drive or carry out other tasks. Struggling to keep your emotions in check can also be a sign you aren’t getting enough sleep. 3. Hunger/weight gain If you haven’t had enough sleep, you might find yourself hungrier than usual. This is your body’s way of finding energy and you’ll often crave unhealthy food that is high in fat and sugar. The downside is that you might

When you’re tired, your libido can suffer. The last thing you feel like doing is expending energy and working up a sweat. Lack of sleep lowers your testosterone, a hormone that plays a key role in a person’s sex drive. 6. You feel sleepy There are no surprises here – if you aren’t getting enough sleep at night, you’re more likely to feel sleepy the next day. You may feel especially tired in the afternoon and have trouble staying awake. 7. You get sick more often If you find yourself getting sick often, it could be due to a lack of sleep. When you’re tired and your body is run down, your immune system is weakened, therefore increasing your chance of catching colds and other ailments. If you’re having ongoing sleep issues, or you still feel unwell despite getting enough sleep, please consult your GP or health professional as there may be other causes.

THE 3 R’S

REDUCE

REUSE

RECYCLE

Most of us have some level of recycling that we routinely follow. Some do the minimum of separating the milk bottles from the main rubbish and some go to the full extreme of only buying product that is packaged in biodegradable containers or supplied in bulk. In the window furnishing industry we are starting to do our bit RECYCLE Here at Frazerhurst, via our forward-thinking suppliers, we now have access to

Aluminium Venetian Blinds that utilises up to 97 per cent recycled material.

REUSE The simple way to reuse your old window dressings is to repair, if possible. Even a clean can sometimes be the refresh they need but if it really is time then send them off to your favourite charity shop. As an avid charity shopper myself my favourite motto is ‘one woman’s trash is another woman’s treasure.’ REDUCE Buying local and reducing your ‘carbon footprint’ is the only real way to reduce in the context of the window dressings industry. You are covered at Frazerhurst by choosing Weathermaster® as most of the product is made right here in New Zealand. We are also privileged to have access to Hemptech, a New Zealand fabric company that collaborates with New Zealand designers to create and print beautiful local themes such as the Flax pod design from Lynda Williams. We here at Frazerhurst at 146 Lower Dent St have our own programme called Re-purpose. This is my personal favourite R!

All of our deleted hangers are turned into wall art, reusable shopping bags or given to local craft groups who make toiletry bags for Women’s Refuge or shopping bags given away at the markets. My personal favourite – curtain coats. I always get a comment or complement when I wear one.

Call into Frazerhurst Showroom at 146 Lower Dent Street and find out more.

Just What I Need... Just In Time For Christmas! Dear Santa,

I know it’s a bit early but this Christmas I would really like new window coverings from Frazerhurst – I know they get busy just before Christmas so I am doing my planning now. I have chosen to shop at Frazerhurst as they are a local company who can offer me free styling advice and a free on site measure and quote.

Thanks Santa and thanks Frazerhurst Curtains & Blinds!

EASY CARE WITH GROUND COVERS

BY DEBBIE OLDFIELD

Purple Periwinkle

ll throughout the garden, weeds can be a problem. Ground cover plants are an option for combating them. Ground covers normally grow quickly and create thick foliage that stops the light from getting through to other more problematic plants (weeds!). They can also be a way to add a different colour or texture to your garden to go with those bigger trees and shrubs you have worked so hard to keep looking their best. Ground covers are also a way to fill in the gap between those specimen plants, forming a thick mat with colourful foliage or flowers and when they get big enough you will have very little weeding to do on your time off. They are also a good option for those sloping banks where access is a problem for weeding or mowing. There are many different ground covers to suit your style. From low creeping plants, such as Lobelia angulata (Panakenake) with its pretty small white flowers, to something a bit higher such as Coprosma ‘Black Cloud’ with its lovely dark coloured foliage over the colder months. Perhaps you live on the coast and want something to grow and spread in that sandy soil. Muehlenbeckia complexa, Coprosma ‘Poor Knights’, or Sand Coprosma would be just the ticket. If you want something more

colourful, how about Vinca minor (Periwinkle) These are usually available with white, blue or purple flowers, or maybe a trailing Rosemary which grows really well in dry, sunny positions and looks great hanging over a retaining wall or down a bank. In short, ground covers are a wonderful addition to your garden or difficult bank. Come in and see our range of ground covers, you might be pleasantly surprised at what you could fit in.
