Editor’s note

L

ast month I was asked to attend the Jack Morgan Museum ten-year celebration on behalf of my late father. Despite their age difference, he was good mates with Jack. Dad liked to get out and about and do farm deliveries for his business Bryant Tractors and would often pick him up on his way past Hukerenui enroute to the Far North. By then, Jack only had 80 per cent vision but his mind was still sharp as a tack. Dad was instrumental in the early concept of the museum and was known to spot the odd ancient derelict item on the farms he went to and cart them back (with permission) to Jack’s collection. I remember dad suggesting I write a story about Jack and his collection and taking me out to the house to meet Jack and his wife. Before heading out to the celebration the other week, I looked up the story to refresh my mind and was surprised to see it was published on October 11, 2008. My twins were born October 7, 2008 – I must have been extremely hapu at that time and very keen to meet this Hukerenui legend I’d heard so much about! I’m glad I did. As another one of his good friends said in this story; ‘He was just a good fella, a hard case’. I last saw Jack at my dad’s funeral.

9 - Your guide - advanced skin treatments at Caci 10 - What are skin peels? He had very little vision but he approached me. Two years later and I was at Jack’s funeral. I have no doubt these two old-school hard workers, along with their other mate from the Hukerenui Tavern, Clive Smeath, also mentioned in the story, will be up there having a well-deserved drink together. In this edition, we revisit that chat with Jack, who shared his early memories of the place he called home, while looking at how the museum, his legacy, has been ticking along over the last ten years. You can read this on pages 4 & 5. If you are planning on visiting this Hukerenui museum, why not make it part of a road trip to the Far North? This month we feature the beautiful Doubtless Bay as a holiday destination. Mangonui has tons of history and beauty and is a great base for all the other picturesque places that make up Doubtless Bay and its surrounds. You can read about what there is to see and do on pages 16 & 17.

t all started with the Trelise Cooper ‘Just Like Jackie’ outfits we decided to wear to launch our ‘Twiinnie Tuesday’ Instagram and Facebook posts at the beginning of Level Three. Mustering up our primary school acting skills, we exited the changing rooms wearing identical dolly pink Chanel numbers and proceeded to be hilariously funny – or so we thought, while Anne videoed. Our post attracted the attention of both Trelise Cooper, and Julia, co-designer of Coop Trelise Cooper who liked us enough to add the video to their feed, quadrupling our social media exposure. To follow, ‘Twiinnie Tuesday’ showcased more videos of Trelise Cooper outfits. We wanted our New Zealand clientele to know that Trelise Cooper was north of the Harbour Bridge in Whangarei. Meanwhile, Trelise Cooper, experiencing her first New Zealand winter in years, decided to market her brand personally by travelling the country visiting her retail outlets. Being the newbies on the block, we were thrilled to get the call to say she and her team would like to head north to Whangarei as we had only stocked her brand for two seasons. AND she was keen to take part in our ‘Twiinnie Tuesday’ video!! How exciting – we had such a blast!! It was a very special afternoon with Trelise and her

team. We are now stocking Curate as well as Trelise Cooper for summer 2020. It’s all about fabulous colour this summer. Watch this space. Like and Follow us on Instagram and Facebook if you want to view our ‘Twiinnie Tuesday’ video with Trelise – we’ve renamed it ‘Triplet Tuesday’.

WINTER SHOE CARE

TIPS

AT SANTRENO SHOES

• Comfort Craftsman Boot • Yearling leather & comfort rubber sole

Black in Womens & Mens Chestnut in Mens

We all have to wear shoes, most of us all day, every day. It's not a purchase we can skip out on entirely, but it is one we can save on in the long term by using proper shoe care.

T

his is especially true for the expensive boots and shoes subjected to tough autumn and winter weather year-after-year. Keeping your shoes in good condition is actually pretty simple. You just need to know what to do (and commit to doing it). A little upfront cost to prevent wear and tear could mean avoiding an expensive replacement sooner than necessary. 1. Use a water protector Water is one of the biggest offenders for wearing shoes out. You probably can't pull off never wearing your shoes in the rain, sleet, or snow, but you can make sure they're better protected when you do. It's best to cover your shoes in a water protector solution soon after purchasing them and then again once each season. If you've never done anything to protect those old shoes before, it's not too late. Go ahead and buy some water protector and get started. 2. Polish your shoes regularly When your shoes get too dry, it can cause cracks in them or change the shape so they don't fit as well. Polishing your shoes is like moisturising your skin; it keeps them from drying out (and makes them look nicer besides). 3. Use shoe trees (or paper) While rain can cause some problems for shoe longevity, there's a more consistent threat of moisture with every use: foot sweat. Shoe trees help absorb some of that daily moisture and the odour it causes while you store your shoes at the end of the day. They also help your shoes keep their rightful shape over years of use.

If you don't want to spend the $20 or so a shoe tree costs, you can bunch up some paper to use for the same purpose. 4. Let them dry naturally Don't try to rush the process of drying out wet shoes with a dryer or heater. That will only warp the shape and potentially damage the material they're made of. If your shoes have gotten wet, give them time to dry naturally before wearing them again. 5. Replace the caps on heels with a stronger version For high heels, the weakest link is the cap. Many women know the experience of a cap breaking off a high-heeled shoe at an inconvenient moment. Most high heels come with plastic caps, but a shoe repairman can swap those out with rubber caps that will last much longer. 6. Switch them out Shoes need a break from time to time. If you only have one good pair you're wearing most days, you're not going to get the best bang for your buck.

Bravado Hair Salon is the brainchild of Daniel Matene and Regan Moyes

BY REGAN MOYES

When Daniel and I created Bravado Hair Salon in 2019, the motivation was to offer a healthier alternative in haircare for our community and the environment. Ten months into business and that ambition has seen us grow from strength to strength.

From Strength to Strength at Bravado

O

ur boutique salon runs like clockwork with creative director, Daniel Matene, apprentice, Vinni Beazley and stylists, Alex Wickliffe and Kaya Neumann on the floor. And that’s not without reason. We’ve recently sought education from Cameron Grimshaw, master cutter and former artistic director of Toni&Guy NZ, to help hone the team’s craft and technique. Each of the team brings their own personal flair to their work. But together, they create a warm, bright and inspired atmosphere. As the online manager, I’m fortunate to witness their skill, often in awe, from the comfort of my desk. We’ve teamed up with Italian beauty brand, OWAY, and proudly offer their range of sustainable haircare. With products that are environmentally-friendly, smell amazing and work wonders, what’s not to love! And because the shampoos and conditioners come in recyclable packaging, we’re thrilled to announce a refill service at a discounted rate. Saving money, waste and the environment just by investing in quality products for your hair. How good is that! We’re excited to introduce a new product to the salon, perfect for clients whose greys are giving them grief. In addition to our colour range, OWAY’s Hnectar is an innovative colour treatment designed to work with grey hairs not

against them. It aids in colour retention and provides a softer gradient of regrowth. The clients who’ve used Hnectar have found their greys blend into their colour for longer and don’t grow out as fast. So if you can’t hide the greys, blend them. And if you can’t blend them, embrace them. We’ve come a long way in 10 months and we’re not stopping there. Our future projects include stocking OWAY’s skincare range, exploring how the salon can offset its carbon emissions and, as always, continue to connect with the Northland community. We’d love for you to join us as we mark these milestones and more. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram or on our website where you can book appointments and shop our products with ease. And if you’re in the area, pop in and see us at 3c Bank Street, Whangarei to experience our work for yourself.

YOUR

GUIDE

Advanced Skin Treatments at Caci For many skin types, a personalised mix of skin treatments on Caci’s Reformaskin treatment plan is perfect.

However, for those with more specific concerns, whether it be pigmentation or advanced signs of ageing, a membership upgrade with advanced treatments can help make a big difference. Keep reading as we discuss the advanced treatments that Caci offer, and the specific concerns they cater to.

MICRONEEDLING If you are wanting improved skin texture, restored elasticity, softer lines, increased skin tightness, or reduced appearance of scarring (including acne scarring), then look to Microneedling. How does it work? Microneedling uses micro needles at varying lengths to penetrate skin, triggering our body’s own wound healing response. Doing this boosts the production of collagen tissue, which is stronger, and firmer than before. Over a course of treatments, collagen fibres are strengthened and the

skin becomes stronger, smoother, and firmer, with improved texture. Plus, during the treatment, a combination of Hyaluronic acid, multi-vitamins and amino acids are infused to boost further collagen production for firmer, healthier-looking skin.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Where do I start when considering an advanced treatment? The best place to start is with a consultation at your local Caci clinic. Meet with one of their skin experts and they’ll be able to recommend the best treatments based on your concerns. Oh, and did we mention consultations are free! How many advanced treatments is best? This will depend on the condition of your skin and what you are wanting to achieve with treatment. Your local Caci clinic will be able to advise you on how many treatments may be best for you during your initial consultation.

How does a membership at Caci work? The team at Caci recommend a series of treatments to get the best results. And to make this easier they can package together a personalised treatment schedule as well as a payment plan option to suit you – this becomes part of your membership at Caci. Being on a membership can give you over a 30 percent discount on your advanced treatments! Plus, you get some extra benefits too such as complimentary facials and savings on skincare and beauty services. Results thanks to Microneedling and Fractional CO2 Laser treatments.

Results thanks to Microneedling treatments:

PHOTO REJUVENATION If you are looking to reduce pigmentation, age spots, sunspots or redness, or if you’re wanting to improve skin texture and tone while stimulating collagen production, then it’s Photo Rejuvenation for you. How does it work? Photo Rejuvenation uses a Variable Pulsed Light (VPL) system which safely pulses high energy light beams through the skin surface, targeting skin pigmentation in underlying tissue and minor surface blood vessels whilst improving skin texture and

WHAT ARE SKIN PEELS? Skin experts at Facedoctors Northland talk to Savvy about how skin peels can rejuvenate your skin to reveal more youthful, softer and smoother looking skin...

S

kin peels harness the power of naturally occurring acids and active ingredients to deeply exfoliate and brighten the skin. The treatment stimulates new cell growth and collagen production, helping to reveal fresher, clearer, brighter skin. At Facedoctors Northland, we offer a variety of industry leading Skin Peels that involve applying a non-toxic chemical solution to the skin that removes the top layer of dead skin cells and encourages new ones to grow, revealing the softer, smoother skin beneath.

How do Skin Peels, Chemical Peels and Resurfacers work? Peels and resurfacer treatments are designed to exfoliate your skin and encourage it to refresh itself by creating fresh new skin cells. They also stimulate the skin’s natural collagen production to help target the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Skin peel treatments make use of acids and enzymes to exfoliate away layers of the skin to reveal fresher, clearer, more youthful looking skin beneath the surface. Resurfacers are a milder type of skin peel and are sometimes referred to as ‘superficial exfoliating treatments’. The powerful blend of ingredients in skin peels work to visibly reduce the appearance of open pores, remove dead skin cells, target blemishes, acne and pigmentation, and visibly smooth fine lines and wrinkles. The procedure is used all over the world to treat skin conditions such as fine lines and wrinkles, acne, hyper-pigmentation and sun damage – the results can be life-transforming. Are Skin Peels Safe? Yes, Skin Peels are completely safe and undergo stringent testing on all skin types and tones: first by the manufacturers; then by our Medical Standards Team; and finally during the

training of our practitioners. During treatment your eyes and hair will be protected. Do Skin Peels Hurt? You may experience a slight tingling sensation as the peel works during your treatment, but this is completely normal. Where on my body can I have a skin peel? Skin Peels are used for the face and almost any other area of the body. Facedoctors Northland offer specific peels for the hands, neck and décolletage. What Happens After A Skin Peel? After the first treatment and starting on your skin preparation regime you will notice improvements. Your skin will feel softer and look subtly younger. Further regular treatments will ensure you achieve your desired results.

IDENTIFYING DIABETIC EYE DISEASE

Diabetic’s require an eye check to check the back of the eye (a fundus examination) at the time of diagnosis. This is particularly important in type 2 diabetes when there may have been a long duration of undiagnosed diabetes. Eye disease related to diabetes include a range of conditions such as refractive changes, double vision, cataract, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. Of these conditions, diabetic retinopathy is the only one that is directly caused by diabetes and most frequently results in vision loss. Risk factors • Duration of diabetes - Almost 80% of

people, who have diabetes for 15 years or more, have some damage to the blood vessels in their retina. • High blood pressure • Kidney diseases • Pregnancy • Anaemia Diabetic retinopathy is a serious complication of diabetes and remains the leading cause of blindness among workingaged adults in the developed world. The progression of visual loss can be reduced with early detection and treatment.

DIABETIC RETINOPATHY

Treatment and follow up The treatment is dependent on the stage of the disease. In initial stages, it just requires periodic follow-up to look for progression of the disease. Later when the disease is more advanced, he/she may decide to treat it with one or more of the following options: • Laser Treatment - Laser therapy is done when there is significant maculopathy, or when there are significant new blood vessels in the retina or iris. • Anti-VEGF Agents (Lucentis, Avastin, Eylea) - These agents are being used in selective cases alone or in addition to laser treatment or surgery. They are injected into the eye and aid in reducing swelling at the macula.

• Ophthalmic Eye Examinations • Cataract Extraction and lens implant • Pterygium Excision plus conjunctive graft • Injection for wet age related Macular Degeneration • Glaucoma treatment FOR ALL DISEASES OF THE EYE 12 | SAVVY

Surgery - Vitrectomy surgery and other additional procedures may be required to manage complications of diabetic retinopathy, like vitreous haemorrhage, retinal detachment or severe macular oedema, etc.

Diabetes mellitus and diabetic retinopathy are progressive conditions, and regular followup care is crucial for detection of any changes that may benefit from treatment and prevent vision loss. You will be notified how often a review is required by the diabetic screening programme or your Ophthalmologist.

Two Stages of Diabetic Retinopathy Non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy: • Blood vessels in the retina are damaged, they can leak fluid or bleed. This causes the retina to swell and form deposits called hard exudates, macular oedema, dot-and-blot haemorrhages, and micro aneurysms. • Macular oedema: The fluid and exudates collect at the macula (the part of the retina that allows us to see fine details), thus decreasing the vision. Macular oedema can occur without any loss of vision. Therefore, it is very important to have routine check-ups to detect and treat these conditions at an early stage.

ARE OUR FOCUS

• Cataract surgery Help is only a phone call away 0800 11 0030

Non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy can progress to a more severe form where vessels in the retina become tortuous and a widespread picture of abnormalities are seen in the smallest vessels of the retina. Proliferative diabetic retinopathy: • Responsible for severe visual loss. • New, fragile vessels grow on the surface of the retina. • Vessels on the retina are prone to bleeding into the vitreous, jelly in the eye and may cause traction retinal detachment • New vessels on the iris can lead to severe glaucoma.

The historic Mangonui Hotel on the left fronts the beautiful harbour

Exploring Doubtless Bay In December 1769 Captain James Cook of the ‘Endeavour' sailed past the entrance of an east coast Northland bay, recording in his journal that it was 'doubtless a bay'.

T

he subsequent-named Doubtless Bay has several small settlements stretching in a horseshoe from Coopers Beach and incorporating Cable Bay, Taipa, and around the long sweeping Karikari Peninsula expanse of Tokerau to Whatuwhiwhi. Towards the south end, Mangonui, meaning ‘large shark’ after it is believed a shark once guided a canoe into the bay, is the main harbourside town for this area and boasts historic buildings which can be discovered by walking the heritage trail.* Since 1792 Mangonui became the port for whaling ships from all over the world. Across at Hihi, at the very southern end of Doubtless Bay, is the Whaling Museum and Butler Homestead. Captain William Butler, as English whaler, settled here in 1839 and established a trading post for American and European whalers. The museum displays a restored and fully equipped whaleboat and a comprehensive collection of whaling artefacts. The Butler homestead is recognised by Heritage New Zealand. Extensive grounds include a pohutukawa tree approaching 1,000 years old and claimed to be the world’s largest.**

Alongside the whaling, three other local products were highly valued in world markets: flax, kauri trees and kauri gum. Settlers in the 1830s began cutting kauri trees that grew in abundance around Doubtless Bay, rafting logs down the Taipa and Oruaiti rivers. Whalers bought the timber for refitting and repairs to their ships and whaleboats in the harbour. In 1880 a large kauri mill was built at Mill Bay in Mangonui Harbour, eventually covering ten acres, where the logs were cut and shipped overseas. With its varied and plentiful enticing beaches, Doubtless Bay has long been our annual summer holiday destination. But being winter, I was keen to stay for once in the heart of Doubtless Bay and soak up some of the atmosphere of this popular historic town so we set off during the school holidays, destination: Mangonui Hotel. Dating back to 1905, the hotel is one of several local historic watering holes popular with the ships’ crews calling at the then-busy port, and has been at the social centre of the town for most of its history. Heritage New Zealand considers the two-storey building to be the most beautiful old hotel in the country. While the exterior of the building remains unchanged, the accommodation has been renovated over the years, retaining the elegance of the original structure and keeping its character. There’s something comforting about walking into a cosy tavern on a winter’s day and the Mangonui Hotel is no exception. We were enveloped by the warm, wooden old-world charm and ambience of a pub wellfrequented. The bar staff and punters alike were welcoming and friendly, calling out quips to one another and it’s the kind of place where you could rock up by yourself and not feel alone. Aurora the resident Macaw parrot is also good for bringing strangers together.

*Brochures for the Mangonui Heritage Trail, which is 3km and can be accessed by both foot (1.5 hours) or vehicle, can be purchased from the Mangonui Information Centre for $1. ** Appointments are necessary for viewing the Whaling Museum.

The hotel had long had a popular resident cockatoo Barney but, with his sad passing last year, two-year-old Aurora was introduced and has quickly made her mark. Bar staff disclose that she is friendly and loves ‘cuddles’ but she also doesn’t like them to end and can get a bit feisty, in the form of a sharp bite and loud squawk in the ear. Probably just as well she holds her own for some of the punters like to wind her up. She is quite the character and just adds to the atmosphere of this charming historic establishment. Despite being early in the week, the pub was constantly humming right from 11am opening and, besides Aurora keeping a watchful eye on things from her perch, there is plenty to keep families entertained. My kids were drawn to the toy vending machine game and enjoyed a game of pool and watching sport on the big screens. There is also a large garden bar with sea views, a pokies room for a flutter, TAB corner and plenty of hunting and fishing and historical memorabilia adorning the walls to keep one amused. After settling into our room and taking in the impressive view from the communal balcony overlooking the harbour, we went for a stroll past the boutique shops along the waterfront. Over recent years, I’ve often heard locals talk about their ‘go-to’ for dinner – The Thai Mangonui restaurant so I was keen to see what all the fuss was about. We met a local friend and

STORY & PHOTOS BY JODI BRYANT her kids there and enjoyed a night of fantastic food in great surrounds where there was a constant flow of diners for early in the week. The next day dawned a stunner and we popped next door to Little Kitchen for brunch which, as far as al fresco dining (or wining, as it is a fully licensed bar) is concerned, would likely be the best seats in town. Co-owned by two local ladies, chefs Cherie Town and Tissa Kamlade, this popular waterfront café opened in 2017 and, I would imagine, locals would now be a bit lost without it. Drive past in the summer and the outdoor frontage is always packed. But inside is cosy on a winter’s day and it was hard choosing from the brimming cabinets and menus. As well as using eco-friendly products where possible, Cherie and Tissa pride themselves on the fresh, locally-sourced, tasty food made on the premises daily. My coffee and the kids’ hot chocolates were yum, as were the eggs – both poached and scrambled, and filling – a great start to an action-packed day. On this magical morning with the waters gleaming, I couldn’t think of a nicer place to enjoy brunch. After taking a stroll along the boardwalk, my friend picked us up and took us on a sightseeing tour of Karikari Peninsular. Although I frequent this area every summer, there were still a few places we hadn’t been so, first stop was Coca Cola Lake.

My turn! … By default. While taking the previous picture, Aurora hopped onto my arm. Despite how it looks, I am quite terrified.

T

akahikare Moana, the New Zealand Storm Petrel, dances across the waves of sparkling Doubtless Bay. Barely touching the water, the storm petrel creates a ballet that is beautiful and enchanting to watch. This small bird personifies the wines made from the grapes grown on the north-facing slopes of Paewhenua Island. Owners Kim and Graham Gilkison said they fell in love with Paewhenua Island after spending a lot of time in the area and, in 2012, bought the original cottage. In 2013, they sold their very successful engineering business in New Plymouth and spent a few years commuting between New Plymouth, Brisbane and Mangonui. In 2018, they made Mangonui home and, at the same time, bought the surrounding vineyard. Graham is still active in the engineering world, leaving Kim to manage the vineyard. They are really excited to share a taste of Northland and their love of wine with those who visit. The microclimate of Paewhenua Island and north-facing slopes provides fantastic growing conditions for the vineyard. The vineyard was planted about 14 years ago, when Butterfish Bay Estate was established, providing them mature vines to work with. The vineyard

these grapes are not well known and Kim says it is exciting to see people try, and enjoy, a wine they have never had before. The Viognier (Vee On Yay) is becoming very popular. A very refreshing white wine that everyone seems to love. ‘Sparkles’ is the sparkling Viognier and it really does sparkle, just like the bay the vineyard sits in. Leading New Zealand wine writer Michael Cooper has given their wines excellent reviews. The Tannat achieved a 5-star rating and this very rich tannic red wine received a

special mention from him recently on Coast Radio. Dancing Petrel’s range of wines have all achieved 4 stars or better from him. Dancing Petrel is open for tastings. The last two years have been spent working with the existing vines, reconfiguring the mature vines and planting 4,000 new vines with 2,000 more to be planted this year. PACKARD MOTOR MUSEUM – VEHICLE OF THE MONTH

1944 Dodge 6x6 Military Carrier

Fishing tips & tales

WITH JOHN VOWLESS (WHANGAREI) & KURT NASH AND REEF O’DONNELL (@FARNORTHKINGS)

I hope for better weather in the coming month. If you are out in a boat, watch for semi submerged logs. Tight Lines. – John Vowless

BY GERALDINE CRAW At the Packard Motor Museum an unusual truck in our line-up of military vehicles is our Dodge Model T223-WC63 6x6 cargo and personnel carrier. In 1940, the American auto manufacturer, Dodge became involved with defence work for the war effort. By 1942 all civilian automobile production had ceased and the factory went into full production building every conceivable type of war equipment imaginable, including engines for B-29 Bombers and armaments and navigational aids for American ships. Dodge manufactured more than half-a-million military trucks of all types and versions. These trucks were used in every US battle zone around the world between 1942 and 1945. Dodge produced large numbers of the 3/4-ton 4x4, generally referred to as the Command Car. The 4x4s were fitted out with a

number of body types including, weapons carrier, ambulance, radio and maintenance vehicles etc. Although not as many were produced, the Dodge 6x6 was a larger and more versatile version of the 4x4. They were used in all climates and over all types of terrain as cargo and personnel carriers, capable of transporting 12-troop rifle squads. During the war, the Americans shipped Dodge military trucks to New Zealand for refurbishment by Todd Motors near Wellington. After the war, a small number of trucks were imported from New Caledonia. Our truck is one of these.

The winter fishing and diving up here in the north has been phenomenal. The crayfish are in shallow and the bay is teeming with life, such as kahawai, gurnard, snapper, trevally, John Dory

semi-submerged vegetation drifting throughout the harbour and many large, heavy pieces of timber, trees and logs washed up on our shores. Most of this is waterlogged and floats with little showing on the surface - a real hazard. This could continue for some time as large full moon and new moon tides have the potential to see these being lifted and floating down our harbours randomly for months after the storm. When the weather has allowed, winter fishing has been pretty good, particularly outside the harbours with Trish and I landing a few snapper, terakihi and kahawai on a recent trip.

most likely you will get a hit when your soft bait is drifting down past the kahawai and baitfish. When targeting kahawai, cast into the work-up and wind fast making your soft bait look like an injured bait fish swimming through the water. So, get out there and give it a crack. Stay safe and have fun. – Kurt & Reef

the COLLECTION ,-.% !& '+.$.# () -+."

Thursdays latest exhibition “the COLLECTION” opens 30th July, 2020

The philosophy behind Thursdays . . . Unlike the traditional ‘seven day a week’ retail model, Thursdays is designed to work as an ‘art event’ space giving art lovers the opportunity to grab a special moment in time to explore, to experience and to wonder. All exhibitions/events open on Thursday and run through to Saturday each week, with viewing by appointment at other times.

his rare opportunity to view a private collection of Northland art, amassed over a period of 30 years, allows the viewer to share the collector’s journey, as their interests, tastes and understanding changed over that period of time. Some of the artwork was collected at the beginning of an artist’s career, so they too, tell a story of the artist’s progression. Some of the artists have now passed away leaving a legacy of creation that cannot be repeated. The collection was not started with the intention of financial investment or gain. Each piece of art was selected because the collector loved the piece, felt that it had something to say, or tempted the collector to pause and wonder. Each piece found its way, not into a bank vault, but into the collector’s home, because starting a collection is about creating an opportunity to be surrounded by joy every day. Why would you not want to do that?

Use this exhibition to test your taste in art . . . you may be surprised by what you learn!

Lockdown

Covert Art Operations

It’s not hard to start collecting art and it doesn’t need to be expensive. The first step is to look and look and look at art fairs, openings, exhibitions and online. You will learn what you like, and you will learn to trust your taste. Take the opportunity to view the work of new artists and if you buy a piece, then congratulate yourself on acquiring something quite unique whilst supporting the artist. You will have captured a moment in time for both the artist and for yourself.

The winter months seem to be the time of the year that I start to dream up all of the ‘If only I won Lotto, I would do this to this house’, thoughts and feelings.

mini makeover ideas M Alex Badham, Designer and Co-owner of www.gathered.nz

aybe it’s the combination of spending more time indoors or just consuming more homerelated content while spending my Sundays on the couch. Even if you have worked hard to find contentment within your space and have narrowed down your belongings to only the pieces which you use and love, sometimes there can just be that one little update missing which can make your home feel just right. This month I wanted to share some mini makeover ideas for you to try out over the winter months. 1. Hang up your art work I can’t be the only person who has a pile of prints or pieces of art just waiting to be hung or framed. It can be a quick update of one room with some new family photos, or go all out and get all of your bits together to make a gallery wall. Updating even the frame of some of your art can make a huge difference to the space. If you are feeling fancy you could even have a winter shopping pick-me-up at some of our small local galleries and help to support local artists in this crazy time.

2. Soft furnishings are key to making your home cosy through the winter Even shuffling around some cushions from the bedroom to the lounge or using throws or a new rug to tie a room together, soft furnishings can make a huge difference to a space. If, like me, you have been coveting some new furniture pieces, how about trying recovering your existing or updating with new colours or textures. 3. Plants, plants and more plants Plants have been scientifically proven to increase people’s happiness in their homes. If you have a bit of a black thumb, we have some amazing local plant shops in Whangarei who can give you advice on which plants to purchase and how to look after them. Bringing some nature inside can really finish off a space. Bonus if you are able to repaint or repurpose some pots for your new plant babes. 4. A lick of paint Painting a room can give the space an instant uplift with relatively low cost. If you aren’t up for painting the whole thing there are so many ideas out there for how to use paint to brighten a space, create distinction between different areas of a room or just add a bit of colour to a space. Best thing is, if you decide you don’t like what you have painted, you can just paint over it! What little changes will you be making to your home this winter? I would love to see them! Come say hello @gatheredstore and share your mindful home updates. Until next month, Alex

• Ensure you test the feel of lots of different beds, research the technical details and if it sounds confusing speak to your bed specialist. Research the most popular beds. Have a good think about what it is you need from your bed. Do you have a bad back, and need good midline support? Do you get too warm in bed? Are you bothered by your partner's movements? Making a checklist before you start is a great way to stay clear on what it is you are looking for, when each bed starts to look the same.

FIVE BOXES TO TICK When Bed Shopping BedsRus talk to Savvy about how to choose the perfect bed...

• Check if the label says New Zealand Made. If it doesn’t, or it says something similar, it’s probably not made here. If in doubt, ask your bed specialist.

es, we get it. Bed shopping can be confusing — springs, cooling, pressure relief, mini springs, pocket springs, pocket in pocket springs - arghhhh. Who knew there is so much tech involved? And, what’s with the huge price differences - how do you know you’re getting what you’re paying for? With over 30 years of delivering Kiwis their best sleep, we’ve spoken to industry leaders and bed specialists to collate the top five considerations when starting your next bed search.

Y

✅ One size does not fit all • While a quick shipping, cheap option might seem like a fantastic deal for your pocket, think on this; Sleep is as vital as exercise and a balanced diet so it’s important to get the right fit for your needs. A quality bed is weight-tested prior to launch, designed specifically for individual and tailored support needs. Reputable bed makers have invested in the testing and data to support this. Having the right support for your body and sleep style is essential for a restorative sleep, which means we all have slightly different requirements from our mattress.

✅ Buy New Zealand Made • Exactly what it says. New. Zealand. Made. When you buy New Zealand made it means the manufacturing is local, ensuring you don’t experience delays, you’re not paying unnecessary shipping or duties and, most importantly, you can trust the quality of the components and processes. It also means you’re supporting local jobs.

✅ Don’t judge a bed by its cover • The real magic of a mattress is under the hood, it’s all the elements you can’t see that matter. That’s why it’s so important to speak to a bed specialist to find out what makes the mattress sing. You wouldn’t buy a pair of specs off the shelf without assessing your vision, a car without test driving or even a house without thorough inspections.

✅ Trust your gut – credibility is key • Like anything, reputation is gold. Not just for peace of mind, but to know the business you are buying from has a long history in the bedding industry. It’s important to know, should something happen with your bed, you are covered, no questions asked. • Ask your bed expert how long they’ve been in the industry and how they can find the best sleep for you. You want them to know beds inside and out and have been in the business for a long time. Customer service is key here, if a problem arises you want to speak directly to the store, to the person who assisted you.

✅ Do your homework • We spend a third of our lives in bed, with our day and wellness governed by the quality of our sleep. It’s a decision worth weighing up and taking the time to get right. Convenience shouldn’t rate as a factor here; a quality bed, from a quality manufacturer will last a very long time.

It’s easy to see why an investment in quality, custom-suited, world-leading innovation is preferable than a cheap, convenience overseas solution. Discuss your budget with the bedding experts at BedsRus Whangarei and ask about interest-free payment arrangements. You spend a third of your life in bed, make sure it’s quality time.

Traders Welcome!

Diaries of a new home build BY ALEX BADHAM

There is a certain amount of luxury when you get to build your own new home.

All of the hours spent scrolling and pinning ideas all of a sudden seem worthwhile and it is easy to fall into inspiration spirals where you get grand ideas about how things are going to look or what they’re going to be made of. The part of it that isn’t all that luxurious is reconciling these ideas with any sort of budget. At the Gathered House, we have decided to go for less square meterage but to allow ourselves some luxuries when it comes to fittings and finishes. One of those luxuries arrived this week in the form of a very expensive box of tap ware. Aged brass and modern design combined, satisfyingly heavy and I can’t wait to see them in situ in the future.

A WINTER

Q&A Do you have any window furnishing questions you would like answers to? Just ask Tracey and the team from Frazerhurst Curtains and Blinds.

We are often asked the same questions on window furnishings and this month we will answer some here for you.

Q A

What product will give me the best heat retention? There are two choices that will give

equally good results. 1. Drapes. Especially if they are hung from floor to ceiling and extend each side of the glass. In fact, how they are hung is more important that the fabric used. 2. Whisper® blinds from Weathermaster® are a Honeycomb construction. For best results, these should sit inside the window frame. They come in three different cell options and each has a different thermal rating known as R values. These are the only blinds that have a calculated R value.

Tracey Harvey Interior Design Consultant, Frazerhurst

Q A

If I choose to have my drapes pooling on to the floor, can I expect more wear? The choice to have your drapes pooling is Aesthetics. How much extra wear this will subject your drapes to will depend on the fabric chosen, your floor coverings and how much foot traffic will be in that area. A tightly-woven fabric, soft carpets, no pets and well-trained vacuum cleaners will all go a long way to keeping things looking elegant for the natural life of your drapes.

Q A

What is the best way to spring clean my curtains and blinds? Last year I wrote a Savvy article with lots of great advice on Spring cleaning. You can view this on our website under the Trends tab. Go to page 2. Or type in this address; https://frazerhurst.co.nz/time-tospring-into-some-extra-cleaning/

Q A

My older timber Venetian blinds have flaked on the window side. What causes this? Older timber blinds were varnished or lacquered. In direct sunshine, high heat or high moisture environments, the coating would flake. The modern Countrywood® version from Weathermaster® is stained so will give long-term satisfaction. If you are in a particularly demanding environment, I would recommend you consider the Polymer version called Masterwoods®.
