ast month I was asked to attend the Jack Morgan Museum ten-year celebration on behalf of my late father. Despite their age difference, he was good mates with Jack. Dad liked to get out and about and do farm deliveries for his business Bryant Tractors and would often pick him up on his way past Hukerenui enroute to the Far North. By then, Jack only had 80 per cent vision but his mind was still sharp as a tack. Dad was instrumental in the early concept of the museum and was known to spot the odd ancient derelict item on the farms he went to and cart them back (with permission) to Jack’s collection. I remember dad suggesting I write a story about Jack and his collection and taking me out to the house to meet Jack and his wife. Before heading out to the celebration the other week, I looked up the story to refresh my mind and was surprised to see it was published on October 11, 2008. My twins were born October 7, 2008 – I must have been extremely hapu at that time and very keen to meet this Hukerenui legend I’d heard so much about! I’m glad I did. As another one of his good friends said in this story; ‘He was just a good fella, a hard case’. I last saw Jack at my dad’s funeral.

I have no doubt these two old-school hard workers, along with their other mate from the Hukerenui Tavern, Clive Smeath, also mentioned in the story, will be up there having a well-deserved drink together. In this edition, we revisit that chat with Jack, who shared his early memories of the place he called home, while looking at how the museum, his legacy, has been ticking along over the last ten years. It’s been ten years since the Jack Morgan Museum opened. Jodi Bryant recalls chatting with the late Hukerenui identity at his life-long stomping ground before the dream eventuated, and takes a look at how it’s evolved since.

t all started with the Trelise Cooper ‘Just Like Jackie’ outfits we decided to wear to launch our ‘Twiinnie Tuesday’ Instagram and Facebook posts at the beginning of Level Three. Mustering up our primary school acting skills, we exited the changing rooms wearing identical dolly pink Chanel numbers and proceeded to be hilariously funny – or so we thought, while Anne videoed. Our post attracted the attention of both Trelise Cooper, and Julia, co-designer of Coop Trelise Cooper who liked us enough to add the video to their feed, quadrupling our social media exposure. To follow, ‘Twiinnie Tuesday’ showcased more videos of Trelise Cooper outfits. We wanted our New Zealand clientele to know that Trelise Cooper was north of the Harbour Bridge in Whangarei. Meanwhile, Trelise Cooper, experiencing her first New Zealand winter in years, decided to market her brand personally by travelling the country visiting her retail outlets. Being the newbies on the block, we were thrilled to get the call to say she and her team would like to head north to Whangarei as we had only stocked her brand for two seasons. AND she was keen to take part in our ‘Twiinnie Tuesday’ video!! How exciting – we had such a blast!! It was a very special afternoon with Trelise and her

We all have to wear shoes, most of us all day, every day. It's not a purchase we can skip out on entirely, but it is one we can save on in the long term by using proper shoe care.

his is especially true for the expensive boots and shoes subjected to tough autumn and winter weather year-after-year. Keeping your shoes in good condition is actually pretty simple. You just need to know what to do (and commit to doing it). A little upfront cost to prevent wear and tear could mean avoiding an expensive replacement sooner than necessary. 1. Use a water protector Water is one of the biggest offenders for wearing shoes out. You probably can't pull off never wearing your shoes in the rain, sleet, or snow, but you can make sure they're better protected when you do. It's best to cover your shoes in a water protector solution soon after purchasing them and then again once each season. If you've never done anything to protect those old shoes before, it's not too late. Go ahead and buy some water protector and get started. 2. Polish your shoes regularly When your shoes get too dry, it can cause cracks in them or change the shape so they don't ﬁt as well. Polishing your shoes is like moisturising your skin; it keeps them from drying out (and makes them look nicer besides). 3. Use shoe trees (or paper) While rain can cause some problems for shoe longevity, there's a more consistent threat of moisture with every use: foot sweat. Shoe trees help absorb some of that daily moisture and the odour it causes while you store your shoes at the end of the day. They also help your shoes keep their rightful shape over years of use.

If you don't want to spend the $20 or so a shoe tree costs, you can bunch up some paper to use for the same purpose. 4. Let them dry naturally Don't try to rush the process of drying out wet shoes with a dryer or heater. That will only warp the shape and potentially damage the material they're made of. If your shoes have gotten wet, give them time to dry naturally before wearing them again. 5. Replace the caps on heels with a stronger version For high heels, the weakest link is the cap. Many women know the experience of a cap breaking off a high-heeled shoe at an inconvenient moment. Most high heels come with plastic caps, but a shoe repairman can swap those out with rubber caps that will last much longer. 6. Switch them out Shoes need a break from time to time. If you only have one good pair you're wearing most days, you're not going to get the best bang for your buck.

IDENTIFYING DIABETIC EYE DISEASE

Diabetic’s require an eye check to check the back of the eye (a fundus examination) at the time of diagnosis. This is particularly important in type 2 diabetes when there may have been a long duration of undiagnosed diabetes. Eye disease related to diabetes include a range of conditions such as refractive changes, double vision, cataract, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. Of these conditions, diabetic retinopathy is the only one that is directly caused by diabetes and most frequently results in vision loss. Risk factors • Duration of diabetes - Almost 80% of

people, who have diabetes for 15 years or more, have some damage to the blood vessels in their retina. • High blood pressure • Kidney diseases • Pregnancy • Anaemia Diabetic retinopathy is a serious complication of diabetes and remains the leading cause of blindness among workingaged adults in the developed world. The progression of visual loss can be reduced with early detection and treatment.

DIABETIC RETINOPATHY

Treatment and follow up The treatment is dependent on the stage of the disease. In initial stages, it just requires periodic follow-up to look for progression of the disease. Later when the disease is more advanced, he/she may decide to treat it with one or more of the following options: • Laser Treatment - Laser therapy is done when there is signiﬁcant maculopathy, or when there are signiﬁcant new blood vessels in the retina or iris. • Anti-VEGF Agents (Lucentis, Avastin, Eylea) - These agents are being used in selective cases alone or in addition to laser treatment or surgery. They are injected into the eye and aid in reducing swelling at the macula.

Exploring Doubtless Bay In December 1769 Captain James Cook of the ‘Endeavour' sailed past the entrance of an east coast Northland bay, recording in his journal that it was 'doubtless a bay'.

he subsequent-named Doubtless Bay has several small settlements stretching in a horseshoe from Coopers Beach and incorporating Cable Bay, Taipa, and around the long sweeping Karikari Peninsula expanse of Tokerau to Whatuwhiwhi. Towards the south end, Mangonui, meaning ‘large shark’ after it is believed a shark once guided a canoe into the bay, is the main harbourside town for this area and boasts historic buildings which can be discovered by walking the heritage trail.* Since 1792 Mangonui became the port for whaling ships from all over the world. Across at Hihi, at the very southern end of Doubtless Bay, is the Whaling Museum and Butler Homestead. Captain William Butler, as English whaler, settled here in 1839 and established a trading post for American and European whalers. The museum displays a restored and fully equipped whaleboat and a comprehensive collection of whaling artefacts. The Butler homestead is recognised by Heritage New Zealand. Extensive grounds include a pohutukawa tree approaching 1,000 years old and claimed to be the world’s largest.**

Alongside the whaling, three other local products were highly valued in world markets: ﬂax, kauri trees and kauri gum. Settlers in the 1830s began cutting kauri trees that grew in abundance around Doubtless Bay, rafting logs down the Taipa and Oruaiti rivers. Whalers bought the timber for reﬁtting and repairs to their ships and whaleboats in the harbour. In 1880 a large kauri mill was built at Mill Bay in Mangonui Harbour, eventually covering ten acres, where the logs were cut and shipped overseas. With its varied and plentiful enticing beaches, Doubtless Bay has long been our annual summer holiday destination. But being winter, I was keen to stay for once in the heart of Doubtless Bay and soak up some of the atmosphere of this popular historic town so we set off during the school holidays, destination: Mangonui Hotel. Dating back to 1905, the hotel is one of several local historic watering holes popular with the ships’ crews calling at the then-busy port, and has been at the social centre of the town for most of its history. Heritage New Zealand considers the two-storey building to be the most beautiful old hotel in the country. While the exterior of the building remains unchanged, the accommodation has been renovated over the years, retaining the elegance of the original structure and keeping its character. There’s something comforting about walking into a cosy tavern on a winter’s day and the Mangonui Hotel is no exception. We were enveloped by the warm, wooden old-world charm and ambience of a pub wellfrequented. The bar staff and punters alike were welcoming and friendly, calling out quips to one another and it’s the kind of place where you could rock up by yourself and not feel alone. Aurora the resident Macaw parrot is also good for bringing strangers together.

The hotel had long had a popular resident cockatoo Barney but, with his sad passing last year, two-year-old Aurora was introduced and has quickly made her mark. Bar staff disclose that she is friendly and loves ‘cuddles’ but she also doesn’t like them to end and can get a bit feisty, in the form of a sharp bite and loud squawk in the ear. Probably just as well she holds her own for some of the punters like to wind her up. She is quite the character and just adds to the atmosphere of this charming historic establishment. Despite being early in the week, the pub was constantly humming right from 11am opening and, besides Aurora keeping a watchful eye on things from her perch, there is plenty to keep families entertained. My kids were drawn to the toy vending machine game and enjoyed a game of pool and watching sport on the big screens. There is also a large garden bar with sea views, a pokies room for a ﬂutter, TAB corner and plenty of hunting and ﬁshing and historical memorabilia adorning the walls to keep one amused. After settling into our room and taking in the impressive view from the communal balcony overlooking the harbour, we went for a stroll past the boutique shops along the waterfront. Over recent years, I’ve often heard locals talk about their ‘go-to’ for dinner – The Thai Mangonui restaurant so I was keen to see what all the fuss was about. We met a local friend and

The next day dawned a stunner and we popped next door to Little Kitchen for brunch which, as far as al fresco dining (or wining, as it is a fully licensed bar) is concerned, would likely be the best seats in town. Co-owned by two local ladies, chefs Cherie Town and Tissa Kamlade, this popular waterfront café opened in 2017 and, I would imagine, locals would now be a bit lost without it. Drive past in the summer and the outdoor frontage is always packed. But inside is cosy on a winter’s day and it was hard choosing from the brimming cabinets and menus. As well as using eco-friendly products where possible, Cherie and Tissa pride themselves on the fresh, locally-sourced, tasty food made on the premises daily. My coffee and the kids’ hot chocolates were yum, as were the eggs – both poached and scrambled, and filling – a great start to an action-packed day. On this magical morning with the waters gleaming, I couldn’t think of a nicer place to enjoy brunch. After taking a stroll along the boardwalk, my friend picked us up and took us on a sightseeing tour of Karikari Peninsular. Although I frequent this area every summer, there were still a few places we hadn’t been so, first stop was Coca Cola Lake.

Dancing Petrel

akahikare Moana, the New Zealand Storm Petrel, dances across the waves of sparkling Doubtless Bay. Barely touching the water, the storm petrel creates a ballet that is beautiful and enchanting to watch. This small bird personiﬁes the wines made from the grapes grown on the north-facing slopes of Paewhenua Island. Owners Kim and Graham Gilkison said they fell in love with Paewhenua Island after spending a lot of time in the area and, in 2012, bought the original cottage. In 2013, they sold their very successful engineering business in New Plymouth and spent a few years commuting between New Plymouth, Brisbane and Mangonui. In 2018, they made Mangonui home and, at the same time, bought the surrounding vineyard. Graham is still active in the engineering world, leaving Kim to manage the vineyard. They are really excited to share a taste of Northland and their love of wine with those who visit. The microclimate of Paewhenua Island and north-facing slopes provides fantastic growing conditions for the vineyard. The vineyard was planted about 14 years ago, when Butterﬁsh Bay Estate was established, providing them mature vines to work with. The vineyard

Leading New Zealand wine writer Michael Cooper has given their wines excellent reviews. The Tannat achieved a 5-star rating and this very rich tannic red wine received a

BY GERALDINE CRAW At the Packard Motor Museum an unusual truck in our line-up of military vehicles is our Dodge Model T223-WC63 6x6 cargo and personnel carrier. In 1940, the American auto manufacturer, Dodge became involved with defence work for the war effort. By 1942 all civilian automobile production had ceased and the factory went into full production building every conceivable type of war equipment imaginable, including engines for B-29 Bombers and armaments and navigational aids for American ships. Dodge manufactured more than half-a-million military trucks of all types and versions. These trucks were used in every US battle zone around the world between 1942 and 1945. Dodge produced large numbers of the 3/4-ton 4x4, generally referred to as the Command Car. The 4x4s were ﬁtted out with a

aybe it’s the combination of spending more time indoors or just consuming more homerelated content while spending my Sundays on the couch. Even if you have worked hard to ﬁnd contentment within your space and have narrowed down your belongings to only the pieces which you use and love, sometimes there can just be that one little update missing which can make your home feel just right. This month I wanted to share some mini makeover ideas for you to try out over the winter months. 1. Hang up your art work I can’t be the only person who has a pile of prints or pieces of art just waiting to be hung or framed. It can be a quick update of one room with some new family photos, or go all out and get all of your bits together to make a gallery wall. Updating even the frame of some of your art can make a huge difference to the space. If you are feeling fancy you could even have a winter shopping pick-me-up at some of our small local galleries and help to support local artists in this crazy time.

2. Soft furnishings are key to making your home cosy through the winter Even shuffling around some cushions from the bedroom to the lounge or using throws or a new rug to tie a room together, soft furnishings can make a huge difference to a space. If, like me, you have been coveting some new furniture pieces, how about trying recovering your existing or updating with new colours or textures. 3. Plants, plants and more plants Plants have been scientifically proven to increase people’s happiness in their homes. If you have a bit of a black thumb, we have some amazing local plant shops in Whangarei who can give you advice on which plants to purchase and how to look after them. Bringing some nature inside can really finish off a space. Bonus if you are able to repaint or repurpose some pots for your new plant babes. 4. A lick of paint Painting a room can give the space an instant uplift with relatively low cost. If you aren’t up for painting the whole thing there are so many ideas out there for how to use paint to brighten a space, create distinction between different areas of a room or just add a bit of colour to a space. There is a certain amount of luxury when you get to build your own new home.

All of the hours spent scrolling and pinning ideas all of a sudden seem worthwhile and it is easy to fall into inspiration spirals where you get grand ideas about how things are going to look or what they’re going to be made of. The part of it that isn’t all that luxurious is reconciling these ideas with any sort of budget. At the Gathered House, we have decided to go for less square meterage but to allow ourselves some luxuries when it comes to ﬁttings and ﬁnishes. What product will give me the best heat retention? There are two choices that will give

equally good results. 1. Drapes. Especially if they are hung from ﬂoor to ceiling and extend each side of the glass. In fact, how they are hung is more important that the fabric used. 2. Whisper® blinds from Weathermaster® are a Honeycomb construction. For best results, these should sit inside the window frame. They come in three different cell options and each has a different thermal rating known as R values. These are the only blinds that have a calculated R value.

How much extra wear this will subject your drapes to will depend on the fabric chosen, your floor coverings and how much foot traffic will be in that area. My older timber Venetian blinds have ﬂaked on the window side. What causes this? Older timber blinds were varnished or lacquered. In direct sunshine, high heat or high moisture environments, the coating would ﬂake. The modern Countrywood® version from Weathermaster® is stained so will give long-term satisfaction. If you are in a particularly demanding environment, I would recommend you consider the Polymer version called Masterwoods®.
