Global pandemic no barrier to Northland business expanding

Opening a new business in the midst of the global Covid-19 pandemic was always going to be a big risk.

But that risk haspaid offfor Mangawhai couple Anna and Bradley Pope after they opened their business Kaipara Ultrasound in Wellsford in October 2020 and have nowexpandedtoopen another

Anna,a GP,and Bradley,a sonographer, decidedtoopen their firstbusiness in Wellsford after spottinga gap in the market.

Anna says, being pregnant, thecouple found there were notenough placesto get an ultrasound so decidedtostart theirown practice offering full ultrasound services.

She admits it was riskytostart the business while theworldwas still grappling with the first peak of Covid-19, but its success hadconvinced themtoexpand the business into Whangārei. ''We are nowopen in Whangārei, and provide high-quality diagnostic andobstetric ultrasound tothis notoriously under-serviced area. We are a small, family-run businessbased in Northland. ''Weweremade aware of thegap in radiology - especially ultrasound- services in the area, and are aimingtomeet the needs of our local people.''

She says Northland is notoriously underrepresented when itcomestomedical services and thecompany has seena steady demandfor its services soexpandingwas agood idea. ''We are excitedtobe abletoexpand after the success (of the Wellsford business) and fill a definite gap in the markethere.I was pregnant atthe time andgoingfor an ultrasoundwas pretty hard, so that waspart of the motivation. And Whangārei is very under-serviced in the health field so having another service here can only help. ''Wewantedtoprovidea service here and had theconfidence in the businesstodo so. Wepretty muchcontinued rightthrough (the globalpandemic in Wellsford) soweknow there's ademand.''

Kaipara Ultrasound also doesACC workand takes referrals from GPs. ''While theworldwas going through the pandemic,babieswerestill being born and peoplewerestill injuring themselves so the demandfor our servicescontinued.''

''We were made aware of the gap in radiology - especially ultrasound services in the area, and are aiming to meet the needs of our local people.''
