Have you ever noticed that when you are being joyful, that everything in life comes with total ease? Recently, I had the privilege to facilitate a small group of people into creating much more greatness in their lives and I came out of it with so much more of me than I previously had too. Oh the joy! One of the common themes that run through most people’s lives is this sense of being stuck, or not being able to access everything they know is possible to be, have & create. The topic with the most heat on it currently, is money, or the lack thereof. You are not the value of your bank account. You are valuable when you are truly being you in all of your generative capacity. There is something called “prosperity of consciousness” and another thing called “poverty of consciousness”. One is when you can live a life of possibilities and the other is creating from difficulties. When you are creating life from conscious awareness and choice, you can create and receive anything with no judgment or rejection. This is where you start recognising your creative power to a degree that you begin to change your world. So, think of someone you know who is creating a lot of money in his or her life right now. Do they love life? Do they have a sense of joy flowing through their veins? Are they unstoppable? Inspiring? Make a commitment to keep out creating your current reality so you can access more of what you truly desire in life. Being joyful and grateful for you, and for ‘everything’ in life is one of the easiest ways to change limiting beliefs into a constantly evolving, constantly changing, constantly altering universe of possibilities!

LEIGH BRAMWELL talks to a young woman who has her sights firmly fixed on what she wants to do and where she wants to be. Chikhayla Broughton is an amazing teen who is giving back to her community.

Teen follows her passion

C

hikhayla Broughton says she’s 16, and then remembers that she turned 17 last week. It’s no wonder she’s forgotten: the world class hip hop champ from Whangarei works from Monday to Thursday in her Cult Dance Studio teaching hip hop, and then spends all weekend practicing with her competition troupe. It’s a busy life, but she wouldn’t have it any other way – hip hop has been her passion since she was six years old. “Mum had a flyer about it and took me along and I loved it – I’ve never stopped,” she says. “At first it was just for fun but then I started auditioning for dance crews and I went to my first world dance champs in the USA when I was seven.” Her first teacher was Whangarei dancer and teacher Annalise Wood, and she later went to Auckland to the Palace Dance Studio and came under the tutelage of ‘ReQuest’ group leader Parris Goebel. Parris was one of six members of ReQuest contracted for Cirque du Soleil's Michael Jackson: One, based in Las Vegas. Parris was also contracted to serve as one of the choreographers for the show, working with Jennifer Lopez. “It felt pretty good to be working with Parris,” Chikhayla says. “But when I felt I’d achieved everything I wanted to achieve in Auckland I wanted to come back to Whangarei and do something in my own community. I felt it would be more meaningful here.” That decision heralded the birth of the Cult Dance Studio, where she now teaches 30 students and her mother Tui helps out with the running of the business. Taking on such a challenge would be daunting for most teenagers, but Chikhalya had been immersed in the business culture from a young age. “Mum and Dad owned a trucking

company so I was brought up in a business environment and always had the feeling for it. Even though I’m very young I’m also old – I had to help out with the business so I learned a lot and now I know what to do. If I don’t, there’s always someone to ask.” Tui is generally on hand to provide information, and to take on the many tasks that Chikhayla doesn’t have time for. “She runs everything that I don’t run, so she’s my backbone. She doesn’t dance herself but she watches and she has lots of advice!” Having taught herself the patience and intuition to be a good teacher, Chikhayla is thoroughly enjoying her role. The best thing about the studio, she says, is parents bringing their kids in and seeing them dance. “They say ‘I’ve never seen my kid to do that before’, and I love that.” When work finishes in the studio on a Thursday afternoon, Chikhayla launches into training with the competition team for the next world championships. They rehearse on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9am often until 9pm, and it’s a schedule that leaves little time for anything else. She also now has a kickboxing gym in her studio now which she is using as a discipline with her dance crews. Chikhayla is training to be a fitness kick boxing instructor when she is not dancing or teaching. “Apart from that I don’t have other interests really,” Chikhayla says. “The only thing I have time for apart from dancing and fitness is eating. And yes, I do eat McDonalds.”

Forget the Kurfew – it’s time to ROCK!

K

ick off your high heels, let down your hair, loosen your tie and put down your drinks – when Whangarei covers band Kurfew hit the stage, it’s impossible to sit still! For the past 10 years, Kurfew have worked hard to spread the beat throughout Northland; rocking gigs at weddings, balls, festivals, birthdays, corporate and public events: with venues as varied as the music they play. From Rock, pop and easy listenings, Kurfew’s playlist is constantly being updated – and as a special treat for the wedding couple, the band often learns each couple’s special ‘first dance’ song to open reception festivities. While public perception of a rock/pop band may be one of wild nights and crazy days; Kurfew are quick to point out that their focus is on providing their audience with the good times – and that means practicing hard, organising their group members and never, ever missing a gig or showing up late. Band manager Warren Bassett has been part of the music scene in Northland for a good few years now, and was happy to support the recent SAVVY 2014 Fashion Show, which was produced by the Advocate and NorthTec. With such talented musicians, top of the range sound systems and a consistently professional approach, it’s no wonder Kurfew has become one of Northland’s top choices for wedding entertainment. The band does have one warning however — side effects of their gigs may include uncontrollable dancing, plenty of laughter and a whopping great time!

Stars hit all the right notes When the stars came out for the American Music Awards they really sparkled, writes Melissa Jenkins

T

HE spotlight might have been on what Iggy and J-Lo wore to close the American Music Awards, but it’s still worth checking out the notable outfits on the red carpet.

Spring clean your wardrobe When better to have a fresh look at your wardrobe than the change of season? SOME IDEAS ■ Take everything out of your wardrobe/drawers, including shoes and accessories. If you have a separate summer and winter wardrobe, now’s the time to reunite them. ■ Make two piles; clothes you really really don’t like/want or fit anymore, and clothes you like/love or that have potential. ■ Spring clean. With everything out of your wardrobe, now’s a perfect time to clean the wardrobe (and drawers) itself. A good vacuum, dust and wipe down the walls with warm water and a few drops of lavender. ■ Time to reacquaint yourself with everything. With the clothes you’ve decided to keep, group all garment types together; jackets, skirts, trousers, tops, etc. Separate what are obviously for warmer and cooler temperatures, though many of our clothes are transseasonal nowadays, especially jackets. ■ Have a big try-on session. Have an open mind when you’re doing this. Mix and match everything and see what combinations you can come up with. Don’t second guess what something is going to look like, just try it on. Invite a friend, or a stylist, if you’re not overly confident. Say you have two jackets, three pairs of trousers and six tops, try them all on in multiple combinations. Think in terms of transforming a garment/outfit from casual to work through to evening simply by adding other

CLEAR OUT: Take a long, hard and objective look at what you’ve got.

garments or different accessories to change the look. The purpose of this exercise is to get the maximum use out of what you have. If some combinations aren’t quite right, would they respond better to different accessories or a different top perhaps? ■ What’s missing? Having completed this exercise with, hopefully, some new combinations to play with, do you need any new tops, cardigans or accessories to fill any gaps or to refresh the look of your outfits? ■ How to organise your wardrobe. Here are some suggestions; it’s a matter of what works best for you:

O

■ Group by garment type — jackets, trousers, tops, etc. You could even manage a sub-group of this by colour. ) ■ Group by garment length — short length garments all grouped together like tops, jackets, etc and then longer garments like trousers, dresses and coats grouped. Modern wardrobe organisers/units have two rows of short garments, one above the other, for very efficient use of space. ■ Group as whole outfits — this certainly makes things easy for that early morning rush. Just don’t lock yourself into always wearing those combinations. ■ Group by purpose, e.g. casual wear, work-wear, occasion. Most clothing transitions

really well from say casual to work wear so this way may be a bit redundant.

‘DON’T WANT ANYMORE’ PILE ■ Sell them through Trade Me or a pre-loved clothing store. If you’re selling through an online auction, presentation is the key — how the garments appear in the photograph/s and the wording you use. If you’ve got well-known labels, be sure to tell people so you get a premium. ■ Give them to charity. Your old work clothes, if in good condition, would be much appreciated at Dress for

Success, a worldwide charity organisation helping women who don’t have the means to prepare for job interviews and start a new job. It’s a brilliant organisation doing great work. ■ Organise a clothes swap with friends. ■ Give them to friends/family.

Do your cups runneth over?

I

SEE far too many women wearing ill-fitting bras — some are spilling out over the top, some look like they have one boob (a monoboob), some have boobs heading to their ankles. “Wow, I have a stomach” was Nicola’s reaction after going for her first bra fitting. Her previous bra was old and not supporting her adequately. The new bra gave her the lift she needed. “I can’t believe what a difference a good fitting bra does for my shape,” said Kathi, who previously wore a bra that gave her a saggy, monoboob look. In fact, 80 per cent of women wear the wrong size bra.*

WHY A PROFESSIONAL FITTING? ■ Bra sizes differ between brands and styles. You might be a 12B in one style but a 10C in another. ■ A well-fitting bra can enhance your figure and even make you look slimmer. ■ There are so many different bra types and styles: a professional will give you what’s right for you. Athletic women benefit immensely from a good sports bra designed with extra support. ■ Bra fitters are trained and highly professional. ■ It doesn’t cost any extra to have a professional fitting, and you get the best bra for you.

BRA SIZING Sizing varies from bra-style and brand. Our breasts also change shape and size as we age and move through life’s different stages, the obvious being pregnancy and post-pregnancy. That’s why you can never assume that because you have always worn a size 14DD that you always will.

FOUR KEY PARTS OF A BRA ■ The support band is either underwire or elastic and goes

MEASURING UP: Bra fitters are professional and respect your privacy.

underneath the cups and around to the back. It should always be flat against your body — if it’s too tight go up a number, if too loose go down a size. ■ Centre panel — the part between the two cups. This should sit flush against your skin, though it does depend on the style of the bra. ■ Cups — Here are two easy rules of thumb to remember: if you go up a back size, then go down a cup size. If you go up a cup size, then go down a back size. For example if you wear a size 10 top with a 14D bra, try a 10E or a 12DD (amazingly, these are all the same cup size!). ■ Straps — the fourth support. It’s important to keep adjusting/tightening the straps

as the elasticity in the bra loosens over time. Bendon advises that you should be able to comfortably fit three fingers under the strap at the shoulder — any more or less and you may need to adjust the straps. Be sure to fasten your bra on the loosest or the middle hook. If you can comfortably fasten it on the tightest hook, try going down a back size.

UNDERWIRE VERSUS SOFT CUP Underwire bras provide additional support, lift and shape. Women with larger breasts often prefer them for these reasons. If your underwire is digging in, it is likely the size

and shape isn’t right for you. Design and technology has brought the soft cup a long way: they now offer a lot more support and shape. Many women opt for the soft cup for comfort and a more natural feel.

GETTING THE MOST FROM YOUR BRA ■ Hand wash or use a lingerie bag on a delicate wash cycle to look after your lingerie. Hook the bra ends before washing. ■ Keep adjusting the bra hook and straps as the elasticity gives, to ensure ultimate support and comfort. * Source: Bendon

ave you seen your swimsuit or bikini lately? It is more than likely that within the next month you will be heading to the beach. Surfer girls have naturally sporting bodies and look stunning in any bikini but most of us struggle to find swimwear that is the perfect style and fit. Lets face it, seeing our bodies in swimwear after winter is not our favourite thing. Regardless of your shape or size, trying on different styles (and sizes) will more likely find you the perfect swimwear to elegantly take you to the waters edge and poolside, and stay on in the surf or while you are swimming! Here is a guide to choosing a swimsuit that will make your outing enjoyable and make you feel good about yourself. Show off your best assets with color, prints and embellishments. Downplay with darker solids. The best swimsuit fit is snug. Some swimsuits expand when wet. Shirring works figure-flattering magic. It will help define the waist and curves. Surfing girls look for functional swimwear that looks great. Look for bikinis sold as separates to allow customisation.

Bathed in beauty

Bikini tops should fit securely to prevent movement. For extra bust support, look for underwire, bra style tops and halters. Padded and push up tops, Brazilian bottoms and embellishments like ruffles and bold colours create the illusion of curves. For tummy control in a one-piece look for surplice wraps and lining support. Asymmetrical silhouettes narrow the shoulders and highlight the beautiful line from a woman's neck to her collarbone.

ADDICTION HAIR:

A roller coaster ride to success W

OW! What a rollercoaster of a year for the team at Addiction Hair, but what an amazing ride it’s turned out to be! They have embraced every hurdle with ease and are more passionate than ever! 2014 brought some changes to the business that were out of their control; however through using years of management experience, Addiction Hair has not only continued to grow, but is doing better than ever! Productivity and utilisation has increased and it has been a win/win year for the team. Having a smaller team of stylists has been hugely positive, as it gave everyone opportunities that they have welcomed and this is something that salon owner Leanne has supported and encouraged. ‘Our team all have big goals,’ explains Leanne, ‘both creatively at work, and in their personal lives – we had Megan running her first half marathon, Rochelle buying her first home, Tash winning Overall Newcomer of the year, Andrea working with HITO towards becoming an industry assessor and as a team bringing home 14 awards from this year’s Regional Competitions..! These are a few of the goals set and reached! 2014 did bring a new personal challenge for me too. I’ve gone back on the floor cutting hair; and I’m LOVING it! It’s not work,’ she laughs, ‘it’s too much fun and rewarding to call it

work! It’s been a great challenge and I’m now back living my passion!’ This move to the shop floor has also allowed Leanne to see her business with fresh eyes; taking a hands-on approach to customer satisfaction and ensuring everyone who visits Addiction Hair will leave... well, addicted! Community involvement is also a high priority at Addiction Hair, and the team are always open to new opportunities. Having raised over $5000 to support Breast Cancer awareness, and having been involved in raising a further $5000 for Women’s Refuge; as active supporters of Northland Rugby and Activ8 among others; the team at Addiction Hair are proud to give back to their community. When you arrive as a guest at Addiction hair, you soon realise that you’ll be well looked after. Being welcomed by one of their amazing Salon Coordinators, you are then led through to the absolutely beautiful interior of the salon. With massaging basin chairs, luxury fittings and cutting edge technology, Addiction Hair is so much more than a hair salon: a step through these doors is a step into a world of vibrant, positive energy and consummate customer care, where you can relax and enjoy your experience. ‘Our year has been full of twists,’

HERBAL HEALTH

Support for immune system Herbalist LES helps address health issues the natural way I am 62 years old and I was diagnosed with lupus last summer. As well as aching joints and extreme tiredness, my skin is inflamed and I have a rash on my face. I went to a dermatologist, who prescribed steroid cream but it doesn’t seem to have helped. My face flares up and gets very hot and red, mostly in the evening. I am thoroughly miserable but I want to try and help myself. Can you suggest a herbal remedy or cream? Lupus is an autoimmune condition and the symptoms can vary widely between individuals. This condition can occur at any age, and 90 per cent of sufferers are women. In auto-immune conditions, such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, the immune system becomes confused and starts attacking the body it is meant to protect. Complex sequences of events take place on a minute-to-minute basis as our immune system tries to protect us from invaders. In our immune system the T cells are the generals in

our army. The key to immune health is keeping the Th1 and Th2 cells in harmonious balance and plant phytosterols (plant fats) appear to naturally balance the activity of these cells. These plant fats keep the Th1 cells functioning at their optimal level and keep the Th2 cells from overproducing antibodies and inflammatory agents. Inflammation decreases, pain subsides and damaged tissues begin to heal. Your body is now doing the work it is supposed to do in the correct way. It just needed a bit of help! Don’t forget that the immune system is programmed for health, not disease. Simba (the African potato tuber or Hypoxis hemerocallidea) is rich in phytosterols and this makes this supplement ideal for helping with autoimmune and inflammatory conditions. Take one capsule, three times daily, on an empty stomach and persevere. For your facial rash try the herbal skin cream Kuswera Zuro which is also used for acne rosacea

and will also help to reduce the redness. Apply at least twice daily sparingly – a little goes a long way. This is also a great moisturiser. Vitamins E and A may help prevent cell damage that leads to joint pain. Vitamin D is especially important for bone health in patients with lupus. It is already known that vitamin D is important in lowering the risk of osteoporosis in lupus patients, and studies are on-going to see if vitamin D can help with other lupus symptoms as well. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in oily fish and are natural antiinflammatory substances. Since lupus is also an inflammatory disease, including these fish in your diet or taking omega-3s in supplement form might be beneficial to lupus patients. It is common for people with lupus to be intolerant to dairy so try eliminating or cutting down on dairy products. Eat a diet rich in whole foods rather than processed foods and avoid preserved foods, often full of chemicals, preservatives, and additives that may stimulate an autoimmune response. ■ Simba and Kuswera Zuro are available from Hardys, Kerikeri and Greeenworld, Kaikohe. Toss in neutral oil to coat lightly and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Spread onto a baking tray and bake for 5–7 minutes or until just cooked through, tossing once or twice. WARM TURKISH CARROT SALAD WITH YOGHURT & DILL

This simple salad is a treat at any time of the year. Fresh dill tends to be under-used and unappreciated compared to the super herbs of favour such as basil and fresh coriander, but this dressing/dip may change all that — once tasted, never forgotten. Serve the dressing as a dip with lavosh (a thin, crisp flat bread), savoury biscuit or crudite´s (especially blanched asparagus), dot onto pizzas just before cooking or serve as a sauce with chicken, fish or vegetables. Serves 6. Not suitable for freezing

DRESSING/DIP: 1 cup plain unsweetened Greek-style yoghurt; 1 large clove garlic, peeled and finely chopped; 1 tsp liquid honey; 1/4 cup finely chopped dill; 1/3 tsp salt or to taste and freshly ground black pepper; 1 tsp lemon juice

INGREDIENTS 5 cups peeled, grated carrot 3 tbsp olive oil

Grate the peeled carrots on a mandoline, preferably, to produce thin julienne strips. Otherwise, slice them by hand or simply grate on a coarse grater. Heat the olive oil in a large shallow frying pan over a medium heat. Toss the carrots in the oil until just wilted. Transfer to a serving bowl or platter. Whisk all the dressing/dip ingredients together and combine with the warm carrots. Taste and adjust seasonings if necessary. Serve immediately or at room temperature.

Keeping everyone happy when it comes to the drinks cabinet at Christmas time can be a bit like herding cats. If you ask everyone to just BYO then chances are you’ll end up with a tonne of cheap sauvignon blanc – and that’s not fun for anyone. Wine writer, judge and TV host, YVONNE LORKIN, has put together a list of some tried and true favourites that, she says, will clear the nose, soothe the throat and most definitely win friends and influence people over the silly season.

BACON-WRAPPED DATES WITH BLUE CHEESE & MAPLE

It’s summer: Fire up

Helen (Josh’s wife) loves these: they are an oldie but a goodie. Use really nice blue cheese and take your time to stuff it neatly into the dates. Crispy, wellcooked bacon will make all the difference here but watch it on the barbecue. Finally, the maple adds a bit of extra sweetness.

THE BBQ

INGREDIENTS 24 fresh dates 125g blue cheese 12 slices streaky bacon, cut in half skewers, soaked 1 tbsp maple syrup sea salt

METHOD

RECIPES FROM:

Bacon-wrapped dates with blue cheese and maple, above; classic potato salad with spring onion and egg, below.

Take the stones out of the dates and fill the hole with blue cheese. Close over the top, making sure you can’t see the cheese. Wrap in half a slice of bacon and place on the skewers. Refrigerate for 20 — 30 minutes, sealed side down, to set. Heat the barbecue plate to high. Grill the skewers for 2 minutes each side, until the bacon is crispy. Drizzle with maple syrup and season to taste with salt.

Josh’s Backyard BBQ by Josh Emett, Random House, $60

CLASSIC POTATO SALAD WITH SPRING ONION & EGG

I grew up eating salads like this. It’s great made with new potatoes, and I usually use a bought mayonnaise as a base. I pimp and freshen it up with vinegar and good-quality oil, and sometimes throw in a few other things. Lots of freshly ground black pepper works a treat here.

INGREDIENTS 500g new waxy potatoes, scrubbed Sea salt 3 eggs 1 cup mayonnaise 4 tsp hot water 1 tsp chardonnay vinegar, plus 1 tbsp extra for the vinaigrette 2 tbsp olive oil 3 tbsp finely chopped chives 1 cup finely sliced spring onion Freshly ground black pepper

18

Season well with salt. Spread onto a plate and garnish with the eggs, and remaining chives and spring onion. Grind over pepper.

METHOD Place the potatoes in a large saucepan, cover with cold water and season with salt. Bring to the boil, then reduce to a low simmer. Cook until tender, and drain. Bring another saucepan of water to the boil, place the eggs in and cook for 5 minutes. Turn off the heat and let the eggs cool in the pan. When cool, peel the eggs and cut into sixths. Mix the mayonnaise, hot water and 1 teaspoon of chardonnay vinegar. To make a vinaigrette, combine the 1 tablespoon of chardonnay vinegar with the olive oil. When the potatoes are cool, coat in the vinaigrette, mayonnaise, half the chives and half the spring onion.

BUTTERFLIED CHICKEN WITH POMEGRANATE MOLASSES

Another simple and tasty chicken dish. The key to this one is to control the temperature. Let the heat settle, the colour will come eventually during the cooking process, and you can always turn the gas up at the end if you require more colour on the bird.

right doesn’t begin to describe this Whangarei Heads house, designed by an architect from Warren and Lorraine Spiers’ unique and challenging brief, and decorated by Lorraine, who brought many years of experience as a colour consultant to the project. The site had proved difficult to sell until these two saw its potential and were able to visualise the perfect house for it. They wanted something with a tree-hut feel, and explained their ideas to the architect, who understood just what they wanted. Before Lorraine began applying her interior design skills, rich macrocarpa floors and ceilings were selected, and the design took on many curves to emulate the waves they could see from the windows. Right from the start, Lorraine knew what she was going to do in terms of the colours. “When you’re doing colour schemes for clients they usually change one or two of the colours and it spoils it,” she says. “This time I was going to do exactly what I

PHOTO: Warren Spiers It would have to be said that as far as some of the neighbours were concerned it was not love at first sight, and before long Warren and Lorraine were in discussions with the council, who wanted the colour scheme changed. Lorraine agreed to do so, provided the council get rid of all the white houses in the area as well. “My colours were all taken from nature and they work with the location,” she says. “White houses stand out against the environment much more.” Logic and knowledge The high ceiling of the lounge and the views across the sea prevailed and the colourful enhance the tree-hut feel of the living area. house went on to feature in a number of overseas newspapers, including the Globe in Canada and the Daily Mail in London. Lorraine carried her colours through to the interior, and incorporated many original ideas in the design. In the kitchen, she had a circular cafe´ table incorporated at the end of the bench to make a breakfast car, and dotted the splashback with beach themes tiles from Morris and James. On top of the pantry, which could be seen from above, she created a ‘dry aquarium’ by covering it with shells and stones, and suspending fish on wires above it that floated in the breeze. The piece de resistance, though, was probably the oven, which she and Warren bought for a bargain price because the shop couldn’t sell it. Nobody but Lorraine, it seemed, wanted a bright yellow oven. Sisal carpet the colour of sand completed the beach theme inside, the Warren and Lorraine bought a furniture truck full of palms to settle their tall tree hut into its environment. A coastal garden completed the picture. They eventually sold the property and bought a traditional brick and tile house. “Not us at all,” Lorraine laughs, “but we’ve given it a Tuscany look with lots of Lorraine’s seascape colours mellow in the white and terracotta.” twilight.

here are quite a few varieties of Pohutukawa available now. Being such a well known native plant, people in the nursery industry have picked out and cultivated any that seem to be extra special. Whether they are small growing, have a different coloured flower, an unusual growth habit or are prolific flowerers, these are the plants that get chosen and grown for us to enjoy. Not only are these pohutukawas suitable for growing on the coast, they make a great specimen tree, and can even be trimmed into a lovely hedge. Metrosideros ‘Scarlet Pimpernel’: This pohutukawa is small growing, with a neat and compact form, getting to 4x4m, it is a slower growing variety. A prolific flowerer in summer covering itself in scarlet red flowers. Perfect for an exposed area, at the beach or as a shade tree. Metrosideros ‘Vibrance’: A beautiful pohutukawa tree with large, bright scarlet flowers in summer. Slowish growing, it tolerates strong coastal winds and most soils except wet. Frost tender when young. Evergreen - 4m x 3m Metrosideros excelsa 'Maori Princess': A pohutukawa with an upright growth habit. It grows to approx 6-7 m tall and tends to grow

It has beautiful crimson red flowers in summer. It is an excellent cultivar to standardise as a single leader. It will grow well in windy coastal conditions as well as a regular home garden. Frost tender when young. Metrosideros polymorpha ‘Tahiti’ Dwarf Pohutukawa, (not a NZ native!): A small growing cultivar of a Pacific Island species, with brilliant scarlet-orange flowers, flowers several times a year from mid-winter through spring. Looks great in a mass planting, or even as a low hedge. Tolerates strong coastal winds and most soils, except it doesn’t like wet feet. Frost tender. Grows to approx 1m x 1m, but will grow bigger given ideal conditions. Ratas.— Metrosideros ‘Gold Beacon’: A southern rata that will grow to

around 5metres tall. It has glossy green leaves and a profusion of yellow flowers from November to January. Attracts native birds like tui. Frost tender when young. Metrosideros robusta. Northern rata: A slow growing, erect tree although in the wild it starts as an epiphyte growing on other trees. Beautiful red flowers in summer. Will grow to 10m tall and 5m wide. Metrosideros carminea – Crimson rata: This rata is covered with beautiful crimson flowers in early spring. It is a small growing rata which grows by clinging to anything with a rough surface. It will grow up ponga logs, old tree trunks etc, or will grow as a small stand alone shrub. Grows well in a semi shaded spot with reasonable moisture. Frost tender when young. Great at the coast or in the town garden.

Immerse yourself in creativity B

oasting New Zealand’s longest running mixed media summer art school, The Quarry Arts Centre offers up yet another helping of creative courses with the 2015 Summer Do programme. Bringing renowned local and international tutors to Whangarei, the Summer Do always offers a lively experience and provides participants with a firm base from which to start their own personal artistic journey with a particular medium. Community Manager Andrea Beazley says that she looks forward to the event every summer “the annual influx of people here at the Quarry to peruse their creative interest is inspiring, it is so rewarding for us to see all the individuals here collectively learning and exploring”. Offering courses in ceramics, glass, flax, painting, sculpture, printing and more, the Summer Do

art school brings together renown artisans and tutors to lead the courses, some travelling from as far away as the UK, “we are committed to working with tutors who stand out in their field of practice” says Mrs Beazley, “we are so lucky in Northland that there is such a raft of these artistic professionals to work with and the Summer Do programme is further enhanced by tutors who travel to Whangarei to lead our courses”. From Solar Etching with Jacqueline Aust to weaving your own taonga with Mandy Sunilight - the Do encourages both traditional and innovative approaches to an assortment of art forms. “Artistic exploration and connectivity between people, place and process is what makes the Summer Do one of the most exciting events in the New Zealand art calendar” says Arts Coordinator Katherine McDermid Smith. “ Not only is there a real exchange of knowledge from one person to another, but also the transfer of passion for creativity that community inspires”. The Summer Do is on from the January 17 to the 23 held amidst the native bush, in the village setting of the Quarry Arts Centre the Summer Do. The tutors exhibition and presentations are open to the public throughout the week. ■ Contact the Quarry for more information: (09) 438 12 15 – admin@quarryarts.org

Price: Soul 1.6 SX $33,490. Dimensions: Length, 4140mm ; width, 1800mm; height, 1618mm. Configuration: 1591cc 16-valve four-cylinder fuelinjected petrol. For more information: Northland Kia 111 Port Rd, Whangarei Ph: 0800 639 542

A

longside coverage of mainstream motoring from baby Picanto hatchback to sevenseat Sorento SUV, the fastgrowing Kia range also hits a few of the niche segments with vehicles such as the turbocharged pro_cee’d GT coupe and the big Carnival people mover. The most niche of Kia’s cars is the Soul which this year transitioned to secondgeneration status. The upgrade meant the squared- off “two-box” styling sitting atop prominent large diameter wheels was retained. The length, width and wheelbase dimensions all increaseda little and the height was reduced while the pricespecification equation was also sharpened. The Soul line-up now comprises three models with two grades of specification and 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre performance levels. Like the original, the new Soul continues to provide a functional hatch/wagon crossover layout with styling that looks like something straight out of a motor show. It’s the design which remains the biggest talking point and the proportions are short in length and still reasonably tall in height. There’s a slim glasshouse and a wide stance emphasised by the 18-inch alloy wheels and fat 235/45 R18 tyres. The Soul packs a fair bit of interior space into its compact 4140mm length and the more generous 1800mm width and 1618mm height measurements to provide small hatch/wagon practicality and a slightly raised seating position. And the exterior details are eye- catching, with a black roof, silver roof rails and LED tail lights. At the front, the signature “tiger nose” grille serves no airflow purpose because it’s the blacked-out trapezoidal lower grille and four slots just above which provide the openings into the engine bay. Low-mounted, round fog lights also feature. The entry-level 1.6 EX model hits the important $29,990 price point and the SX models with a few more creature comforts are $33,490 with the 1.6-litre engine — tested here — and $35,490 if you step up to 2.0-litre power.

KIA SOUL

Second generation a decent soul The 1591cc engine is a conventional multipoint fuel- injected unit developing 91kW at 6300rpm and peak torque of 152Nm at 4850rpm. At close to 1400kg the Soul is not a light car and loaded up with a couple of passengers the 1.6-litre unit has to work a bit harder. But the sixspeed automatic transmission allows 100km/h open-road cruising at a reasonably relaxed 2400rpm top gear with smooth downshifts 3000rpm in fifth and 4200rpm in fourth gear. You need to keep it up in the r for the 1.6-litre to provide real eagerness but the engine will wor a relaxed style in the city and on a highway cruise. The fuel consumption is an unremarkable 8.2 litres per 100km but the official figure is an achievable number and my road test actually averaged

8.0L/100km. Under the skin, the Soul shares its chassis layout with the latest Cerato. The front suspension feels well sorted and selecting Sport from the Flex Steer options removes some of the overly assisted feel from the steering. The torsion beam rear suspension is the Soul’s most obvious driving dynamics limitation and it’s not really up to the damping requirements for controlling the big wheel and tyre combination on uneven surfaces. So you get some markedly different reactions from the

front and rear suspension when running across midcorner corrugations and surface joins. A big part of the appeal of the Soul is what you get for the money. At $33,490 the Soul 1.6 SX is positioned similarly to base model hatchbacks such as the Toyota Corolla and Mazda3. They have larger engines but the SX specification with 18-inch alloy wheels, composite leather seat trim, heated front seats and electric front seat adjustment, an electro- chromatic mirror, reversing camera and front and rear parking sensors is an appealing equipment list at this price point. Tyre-pressure monitoring is another standard feature and the specification also extends to proximity key entry with pushbutton engine start, projector headlights and the FlexSteer system which allows drivers to

switch between Comfort, Normal and Sport settings of steering assistance. There’s also single-zone climate control air conditioning, folding mirrors and an alarm and immobiliser security system. Latest-generation Kia products feature a major enhancement in cabin-finish quality and the Soul SX leather trim with contrasting yellow stitching is complemented by plenty of mock silver detailing and piano black surfaces. The steering wheel has tidily arranged trip computer, phone, audio and the FlexSteer selection buttons. Functionality includes large door bins, a sunglass pocket, a roomy glovebox, two cup holders on the centre console and a handy-sized centre console storage bin. The firm front seats have a little bit of side bolstering support and the driver’s seat has plenty of adjustability with power cushion height/tilt, slide/ recline and lumbar movements. There’s excellent visibility from the slightly raised seating position and the Soul also offers good ventilation flow and clear instruments. A flat floor in the rear helps with the passenger space and you sit upright in the rear seats with plenty of headroom and a useful amount of kneeroom and footwell space. Opening the almost vertical “back-pack” tailgate — which has a wider aperture than the original Soul — reveals a deep load area with a handy 354 litres of cargo volume. Whether you fall in love with the Soul’s distinctive looks or consider it a rather weirdlooking boxy hatch there is no argument that Kia has packed an appealing level of specification into the Soul at a competitive price point.

The importance of being mum Wife, mother, journalist ... PHILIPPA MANNAGH reveals the highs and lows, and the challenges in life ...

R

est, slow down and nourish yourself ... important words for a mother to hear. My latest blog post was triggered by a conversation regarding a concern for mums. A concern that most are rushing back into "life" far too fast after our bodies have gone through the biggest physical activity imaginable. This is advice to myself as well as fellow mothers these days, keeping pace with what they feel society is setting. I'm calling bluff. The days are long but the years are short. We need to reclaim the importance of being mum and know that this role in itself is more than enough. Period. The most important role anyone, on the face of the earth will be called to be. Here is my letter.

A letter to a busy mother... Mummy, I have only been on this earth for 21 days now. Three weeks ... a mere 504 hours in total and I am asking you to slow down already. I feel your anxious emotions when you look around the house and it may be a bit messier than normal. I don't care mum, just hold me. I notice your voice changing in the

mornings and sometimes at night when you are trying to get the big kids ready for school and bed. It sounds angrier mummy than what you whisper gently in my ear. What are they doing so wrong mum? I hear their laughter... aren't they happy? What is the hurry? Why do you need to make that extra trip mummy? Don't you know your body is still healing from the birth experience we went through together? It was a big deal for me too and I am tired. Just hold me. Do you really need it? I don't care what you look like either. That you don't have your usual make up

Pantomime season and oh how I love it JO DANILO escaped to Northland from wintry England three years ago and finds the Kiwi way of life refreshingly different. She shares with SAVVY readers the things that make her stop and smile. One festive season, I somehow managed to see a grand total of five Pantomimes. There was the school one, the village one, the town one, and two big-city ones. By February I was officially panto-ed out, if there is such a word (spellcheck insists that there isn’t). I inflicted three of the Pantomimes on my little boy, and he developed a devastating Christmas condition which we christened ‘Pantophobia’ (another spellcheck first). It began with itchy eyes and ended with severe nausea. Luckily, he has overcome this debilitating phobia, because he is appearing in one, as are his younger brother and grandmother. His mother (that would be me) is busily recreating Ogre’s castles and spooky woodlands out of bits of wood and old tins of paint. Panto-season has arrived and is greedily devouring everyone’s spare time.

But what fun it is! (‘Oh no, it isn’t!’ my Panto-hating husband insists.) ‘Pantomime’ is a Greek word meaning ‘the imitation of all things’. It literally has been around for centuries. In the 1st century, Aelius Aristodes condemned pantomime ‘for its erotic content and the effeminacy of the dancing’. Not much has changed, then, in the last two thousand years. Luckily, the erotic content has been masked with innuendo over time, serving to provide much-needed morale for the poor dads who have been forced, against their will, to take their family along. You either love it or you hate it (or are in stupefying fear of it, despite spellcheck’s denial). For me, Pantomime is an essential part of the fabric of Christmas. The festive season isn’t complete if I haven’t seen a man dressed in bloomers at least once.

on or your hair straightened. I need you now, in all your natural mother-ness. I am hungry and dependant on you, this is all that matters. You are the most beautiful person in my life right now. The one I need the most. Just hold me. For soon... I will be running around, you will find it hard to catch me. When I am six I won't really want you to hold me, especially when you drop me off at school. The years beyond that... you will find it even harder to get a cuddle out of me. Maybe now and again, but for the most part, in all my young wisdom.... I will think I don't need you. Even though deep down I do.

Take the time now mummy. The days are long but the years are short. This "me" will be gone before you know it mum... don't rush it all away. Slow down. Lower your expectations. Live in a messy house. Smile at the cold cup of tea. And just hold me... Pip x www.littlemissfrugalblog.blogspot.com LIKED MEDIA, 0212960496 likedmedia@gmail.com, www.likedmedia.co.nz ■ PHOTOS: Jahanna Hollis

Christmas wishes ... DIANNE HARRIS is a budget advisor for the Anglican Care Centre “Give me some suggestions of what you'd like for Christmas” ... a request often made, but in some cases, particularly when we ask the kids, could cause a few sleepless nights. Maybe not quite that bad, but… The list we get given will often start with the most popular items that are ‘in’ and of course they are always potentially expensive, or outside of our budget. We start walking around the shops trying to find something similar then we start to justify why we are considering buying the item. Why do we do this to ourselves? Why do we put ourselves in a position where we know we will be paying for those items for the coming year or sometimes even longer? I read an article that said: “If your children still believe in Santa, help them draft realworld wish lists. In the postSanta years, set some financial boundaries and give them some choices. "Your children still gets a chance to choose, but you help them remember there are still real limits." Christmas Tip: Start off with a list, shop with the money you

have, and most important avoid impulse buying.

RECIPE This months recipe I have a couple of Christmas Giving ideas. CHRISTMAS FUDGE 395g can sweetened condensed milk zest of 3 limes 375g white chocolate 3/4 cup pistachio nuts (you can buy them with shells removed) 1 cup dried cranberries Grease cake tin or lay down baking paper. Put zest and condensed milk in a heavy based pan over low heat until JUST starting to simmer. Remove from heat and add chocolate, mixing until melted. Mix in nuts and berries, stir well. Pour mix into tin. Refrigerate for 2 hours or tip set before cutting into slices. MARSHMALLOWS BALLS 1/2 a 395g can of condensed milk 100g butter cubed 1/2 cup brown sugar 1tsp vanilla extract 1 3/4 cups round wine biscuits finely crushed 2tbsp cocoa sifted

180g marshmallows 1/2 cup coconut for rolling Heat condensed milk, butter and brown sugar in a saucepan til butter is melted and sugar dissolved – remove from heat and add vanilla. In a large bowl combine crushed biscuits and cocoa, make a well and pour in liquid mixture and mix well til combined. Take a tablespoon of mixture and roll into a ball in your hand, flatten the ball and place a marshmallow into center, then gather the mixture around until it is covered. Roll into a ball and then toss in coconut. Keep in fridge or freezer. ■ I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the positive feedback that I have received over the year and I along with the other staff at the Anglican Care Centre would like to wish you all a very blessed Christmas.
