Meet our International seafaring visitors to the Town Basin BY JODI BRYANT

Returning to Town Basin 20 years later Twenty years ago, a heavily pregnant Canadian, Susan Koning and her South African husband Martin, sailed into Whangarei where she gave birth to their first-born Justin. The birth made local headlines as Justin was one of the first babies born for the year 1999. Now the couple have returned bringing their subsequent child, a now 18-year-old Adrien, while Justin, 21 next month, focuses on his diving career back home. “After Justin was born, we sold our boat Topaz here in Whangarei and flew home with the baby in a backpack,” Susan remembers, while sitting aboard Shenemere at the sunny Town Basin. The couple spent the next 20 years raising their kids in Miami before deciding to carry out the same circumnavigation they’d done earlier. They arrived in Whangarei late November and the day Savvy Magazine came by, Martin was in Auckland buying a car so the family could tour New Zealand. They plan spending six months in Whangarei to wait out the cyclone season.
Selling their home and leaving their jobs, they set off 18 months ago with a then 16-yearold Adrien who was not keen on the venture which entailed leaving behind life as she knew it. “She didn’t want to come. She thought Miami was the centre of the universe and all her friends were there. But then you take said teenager and put her out on the ocean and you have to be self-sufficient and you grow up real fast,” says Susan. “She’s got the geography lessons and realworld social side and embraced the positive aspects of it. It’s been a far more positive experience than what her friends are still doing back home and now she is forced to go look for her peers when we arrive in a place. Her

eyes have opened.” Indeed, after the photo was taken, Adrien was on her way to her voluntary work at the Hospice shop. “She’s keen to volunteer and keep busy, gaining experience working with other people while in the process of applying for a student work visa,” explains her mum. Passing the long passages in between countries can be challenging and, like any family, they have had their moments, especially with a teen on board, while many would wait until their kids have flown the nest, says Susan. “You have to have a solid semi-functional family dynamic in order to survive this,” she explains.

The initial five-year circumnavigation plan is so far looking to be six as they have stayed longer than intended in places they like. “We have to be very frugal and are on a strict budget,” says Susan, adding that their Miami rental property mostly funds their lifestyle. Since arriving in Whangarei they have enjoyed catching up with old friends and making new ones. “We love the Town Basin, it has easy access to everything and facilities, it’s a great community and has a real good vibe. “We also had a real good time here and have some special memories.”
As Maurice Brisard relaxes on board his 50ft aluminium sloop Karmocha with a glass of French champagne, it’s hard to imagine the other life he carries out saving lives in war-town countries. The 78-year-old affable Frenchman has certainly led an extraordinary life. A surgeon for 50 years, his first recreational passion was climbing mountains. But, after reaching 8,000m on the south summit of Mt Everest in 1991, an avalanche landed him in hospital putting an end to his climbing hobby. A friend and world-renown navigator suggested he take up sailing instead. “I’ve always liked challenges,” says Maurice, who can also speak Dutch, Polish and a little English. “The boat is a challenge. Before it was climbing, but each day I learned.” He has since taken on many voyages, including sailing solo for four months around Antarctica. “It was just me and the big iceberg and the huge albatross flying over,” he recalls fondly. After retiring, Maurice was approached by Doctors Without Borders, an international humanitarian medical organisation with projects in conflict zones and in countries affected by endemic diseases, and has carried out missions in war-torn countries saving thousands of lives over the last ten years. “I have been amongst the pure misery of the world. It is a risky job every day and so they don’t send for the young doctors
with young families, they want experienced doctors,” he explains. Maurice has seen some truly horrific sights - his tablet holds some of the before and after images from the successful surgeries he has performed - and it is clear many of his patients have touched his heart. These include rescuing an unborn baby from the mother’s womb after she was killed, reconstructing faces which have been destroyed by bullets and performing multiple amputations daily on both adults and children. He has the photo with a 20-year-old Palestinian man giving the peace sign from his hospital bed two days after performing surgery on the spot to remove a bullet from his heart. In October, Maurice sailed into Whangarei aboard Karmocha, which he says means ‘freedom of myself’ and also is a combination of his son Jean-Charles and daughter Karina’s names, as well as his own, from Tahiti. He has resided there the last 36 years. “New Zealand is the best country to repair the boat, I think, with the quality of the engineers and workers on the boats. It’s a good life here in New Zealand and the listening and kindness of the people touches my taste and liking for life,” he says, adding that he always looks forward to arriving at new destinations and meeting new people. And the voyage from Tahiti to Whangarei wasn’t without its adventure. After a storm

ripped the main sail, Maurice lost his footing on the stairs and tumbled to the cockpit causing extensive hematoma down his back, making the final ten days challenging. But the active doctor has mended now and spends his days cycling to destinations, which have so far included Opua and Auckland. “I like this country because I am so active and, the other day, I cycled to Opua and went across to Russell but there were no places left to stay so I went to Paihia and rode back to Opua and then the kind lady in Russell phoned back to say they had room so I rode back. I covered 247km in two days.” Maurice is also a keen philosopher and, it’s during his sailing adventures, that he puts life into perspective. “I’m very relaxed here and, as well as working on my boat, I have time to write my
philosophies and a bit of an autobiography. “I like to appreciate the beauty I see and hear around me. Yesterday I was sitting in a restaurant and there were two couples. One lady was normal and the other was pretty but I could see that the beauty was in the normal-looking lady because she was in love, it was in her eyes. “Why I say that is because a woman in love is more beautiful than the coquettish. The beauty is not about the plastic but it is about love. That was my philosophy for the day,” he finishes with a smile. And on that note, while Karmocha undergoes repairs in Whangarei, Maurice, originally from Burgundy, will be flying home to France for Christmas. “I like New Zealand but I miss my children. I have to see them.”

Working for Retirement or Living the Dream? No Regrets from Young American Sailor
Eric Laakmann didn’t want to risk following the trend of saving for retirement, then living his dreams, so the young American set about taking a much different and more courageous journey. After college, the keen sailor from Washington saved like mad from his job at Apple engineering and then managing the engineering of the Apple Watch, and was able to purchase Zephyr, an Outremer 55 Light catamaran, and have enough savings to sail for several years. In April 2018, and still in his twenties, he set off alone and, after much adventure, including coming face to face with glaciers larger than cars, and sharing the passage to New Zealand with a giant venomous centipede, arrived in Whangarei in November with three additional passengers. “I knew that saving for retirement until I was 65 and then living my dreams is a flawed compromise at best,” he explains. “You might have all the money you ever wanted but who knows what kind of shape anyone’s health will be in at that point? Was it the right financial decisions to set sail? Definitely not. Was it the right life decision? Without a doubt.” He adds: “This Mark Twain quote comes to mind: ‘Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. So, throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails’.” With that in mind, he left everything behind to live out his dream and first headed to Alaska, picking up crew he met along the way. It was there the first adventures began.
Eric recalls: “We'd been in an anchorage surrounded by 12 brown bears, as well as woken up to Zephyr getting clipped by a medium-sized iceberg while at anchor at 4am one time.” Before heading across the South Pacific, they sailed to Mexico and, in May, 2019, Eric set off with a crew of six across the pacific to French Polynesia. Eventually, the crew all went their separate ways and Roxy Darrow, from California, jumped on board. “Roxy and I met during a beach frisbee game. The funny thing is that we didn't even like each other when we first met but, through shared experiences, we developed a trust in each other that has endured the now 3,000 miles we've sailed together.” In August, they arrived in Vava'u Tonga where Lauren Michelle Fritz, from Idaho, who was working as a whale swim guide for the season, and Abby Dahl, from Oregon, who was working at an eco-resort, also joined them. “Lauren had taken some basic sailing courses before leaving Tonga but had never done an overnight. Roxy has been boat hitchhiking from the US on her long journey to Japan and Abby had zero sailing
experience. Arriving in New Zealand was the culmination of the longest sailing trip each of us had ever done,” reflects Eric. The group arrived in Whangarei because, after 19 months of sailing, Zephyr was in need of a little TLC. “Whangarei is a legendary oasis for facilities to get proper work done on your vessel. That, and it is so nice to be in a proper town with everything, from department stores to yoga studios. Regarding New Zealand, I can honestly say that it is one of the friendliest places on earth that I have ever visited.” Eric describes a highlight of the trip as pulling Zephyr up to the face of massive tidewater glaciers in Alaska. “Some were easily over 100m tall. It is unreal to watch in real time, a geological event. At some glaciers, every few minutes a piece of glacial ice, bigger than a car, would fall off, creating an explosive splash and sound. It was also a stark reminder of environmental changing ongoing on our planet and had the acute effect of making

climate change even more salient.” The cited lowlight was of much smaller proportions but still too big and too close for comfort: “In Tonga, we had a massive venomous centipede escape on board. One morning, while peeling leaves off bok choy, a 10cm centipede slithered out onto the floor. It took the shortest possible route to one of the most inaccessible parts the boat, a nearby wire/pipe conduit. Inside the conduit, it was inaccessible and we had to accept that we would be sharing our home with the beast until we could find him in the open and kill him. “Wikipedia did little to dampen our fears as the page listed the species as ‘highly venomous’, ‘extremely aggressive’, ‘anxious’, and ‘difficult to kill’. The movie ‘Alien’ comes to mind. Getting peaceful sleep was difficult. We nick-named the centipede Ted because saying ‘centipede’ was too much. We also had to make a rule that he was not allowed to be mentioned at night. “On passage to New Zealand, we luckily managed to kill it. Much celebration was had on board that night,” Eric chuckles. Eric says one of the most valuable experiences of the sailing trip has been taking on crew. “I've learned so much about myself, others and life from sharing my home. Through sharing in all of the high moments and overcoming all of the challenges of sailing a small boat across a big ocean, you develop a team dynamic that I haven't found matched by any experience on land.” The friends have since flown home for Christmas while Zephyr undergoes repairs but will return in January. # To follow the travels of Zephyr or to contact Eric, follow their Instagram account @ voyageofthezephyr.

It’s 6pm and Steve Jennings is just about to tuck into a much-anticipated Sunday roast with his wife and three children when his pager goes off.
E
veryone’s eyes meet across the table in a silent acknowledgment of resignation. They know the drill. Wife and kids are used to surrendering their husband and dad to a worthy cause. Steve has just five minutes to get to the Onerahi Fire Station to join the crew aboard the fire truck before it departs toward the emergency. It is then he is briefed on where they are heading but it’s not until they arrive,
that the fire crew will realise the full extent of the situation. “You never know what you’re going to turn up to, how bad it is or who and how many are involved,” says the 45-year-old. “But the MVA’s (motor vehicle accidents) stand out the most in my memory. Typically, they aren’t pretty to attend.” The crew could also turn up to a vehicle, house or scrub fire, house flood, public hazard, such as a tree fallen on the road, a commercial building smoke alarm activated, someone locked out of their house or vehicle, medical event, such as a heart attack, or a cat stuck up a tree. “Yes, this actually happens,” Steve confirms. “Although we have only had one in the five years I’ve been involved.” Steve became a volunteer fire fighter five years ago after getting a taste for carrying out voluntary work as a teen. It derived from his love of the water which lead to volunteering for surf lifesaving for ten years and then Coastguard for another ten. After moving to Whangarei 11 years ago, he wanted to try something different and, following some encouragement from a friend who volunteered at the Whangarei Heads Brigade, decided to give fire-fighting a go. He was surprised to discover a lot more to the role than meets the eye, beginning with
the training; twice a week for up to six months, before undergoing a week-long recruitment training course and subsequent weekly training, along with additional optional courses to gain qualifications. Then there’s the community role fire fighters play, such as visiting schools and pre-schools and various community events to educate about fire safety. Steve is also the Onerahi brigade’s health and safety officer. A big event each year is the Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge which fundraises for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand. This involves much planning, organising, raffle selling and other fund raising, not to mention the rigorous training involved and the event itself.

All this, Steve fits around his day job as Northland regional manager at Southeys Group (hydro excavation specialists), and family life. “It’s not easy and sometimes you just have to take annual leave to do it,” explains the dad to Jade, 12, Aimee, 9, and Reece, 7. “We have a saying that family and work come first but it’s not always easy to say no to helping someone, no matter what you’re doing, so sometimes compromises need to be made with the understanding and support of the family. I’m very lucky in that regard.” As well as a pager, Steve has an app on his phone. It can activate while at work, asleep, during dinner, kids’ sports and birthdays and, most recently it meant missing the family Fireworks Spectacular show at Toll Stadium while fighting a scrub fire on Abbey Caves Rd. “I know my wife Lana and my family fully support what I do. Yes, she has her moments of ‘You've got to be kidding, Really? That's four times today!’ or ‘I’ve just dished dinner!’ But she understands the why. “With work, it depends on what I’m in the middle of, sometimes you can’t just drop what you’re doing,” says Steve, adding that if he has been fighting a fire the night before, he will always show up at his job on time the next day. The worst aspect of the job, says Steve, are the MVAs and medical calls when the result isn’t what was hoped for and it’s impossible not to take the mental impact home.
“You can’t help but take it home. It’s not something you can just turn off and on. It’s how you deal with it that matters.” The team cope by talking about it at the station afterwards and sometimes this is ongoing. “It depends on what the incident was that we have attended. There are times, at the end of a hard fire, where a chat over a beer is appreciated. If it’s been a traumatic incident, then a more official debrief is done and counselling is offered. “Mental wellbeing is something that FENZ (Fire and Emergency New Zealand) and the station is pretty big on and they want us to talk, if not to each other, then to specialists. But we have a pretty solid crew here at Onerahi and we are happy to sit down and listen when someone needs to talk. I have to say though, I have a fantastic wife who is very understanding and is always there for me. If I need to talk, we make the time to talk. I really couldn’t do this without her.” So why does Steve do it? “Simply put, I like to help people and, saving someone’s home or life is a big deal. I also love how it’s a big extended family at the station. We all look out for each other and jump in and lend a hand when someone needs it.” And the roast will keep. “My lovely, understanding and incredibly tolerant wife puts it aside for me to have when I eventually get home.”

MEMORIES AT GLOBAL DIAMONDS Creating heirlooms that will be prized for generations is a rewarding part of the job for the team at Global Diamonds in Whangarei. Goldsmith and general manager Christine Price says she values the trust that clients put in her to create beautiful jewellery and never tires of their delight when they see the finished items for the first time. Most of the pieces created at Global Diamonds are to mark big life events, such as engagements, weddings and anniversaries. Christine guides the clients through the entire process, from the moment they walk through the door and she starts to draw up ideas. “It’s about listening to the person and finding out what suits them,’’ she says. “We always find a way to make their wishes come true.”

Christine says as a manufacturing jeweller, people can see her making the pieces right in the shop.
She says Argyle champagne-coloured diamonds are attracting interest as the mine in Western Australia is set to close down next year.
“That’s really important and helps to build trust. If someone has brought in inherited jewellery to melt down, that is exactly the gold they will get used in the new piece. It’s really important to honour the memories in the jewellery.’’
“With diamonds, you know exactly what you are buying according to the international grading standards, but with coloured stones I always buy them in person.”
From design to completion takes about four or five weeks. “It’s a three-dimensional sculpture. By the time it’s got to the workbench, I know the design intricately.” Christine says her designs are made to be durable and substantial. “You can feel the quality as soon as you try it on.’’ Each item starts as a small gold bar and has to be pressed and crafted into the creative and stunning designs that Global Diamonds is known for.
Once the jewellery has been crafted, the stones are set by Paul Cosson, who has worked with Christine for years. Global Diamonds is owned by Barry and Jenny Trass and, as well as Christine, has a staff of three sales consultants, Katie Johnson, Patricia Pieters and Natalie Taui. As well as custom jewellery, the team has an extensive range of fashion jewellery, including leading New Zealand and international designs by Evolve, Nikki Lissoni, Cudworth and Silk & Steel.
Christine buys the stones for use in the jewellery and loves to find unusual items on her travels. “Everyone likes something to be a little bit different.’’ One recent rare purchase is a Padparadscha natural unheated sapphire that is flamingo pink. The variety of sapphire is one of the world’s rarest and is named after the pinkish-orange colour of a Lotus blossom. “These are incredibly hard to find and the colour is out of this world. It will be made into a stunning piece for some lucky client.’’

A healthier alternative in hairdressing at Bravado
Bravado Hair is a new salon in Whangarei which is offering a healthier alternative in hairdressing. The salon is the brainchild of partners Daniel Matene and Regan Moyes. Daniel, who has returned to Whangarei after working in Wellington, says their vision for the salon is to be as sustainable, ethically sourced, recyclable and biodynamic as possible. Daniel says traditional hairdressing is one of the most pollutant industries in the world, so he is keen to embrace change with his new salon. “The salon I worked at in Wellington used sustainable and biodynamic products, and it’s a concept I’m keen to bring to Whangarei,’’ he says. “We believe this is the first step in doing good, not only for ourselves and the industry, but for our clients and the community.’’ Daniel trained in Whangarei from the age of 15 and over the years won many awards for his expertise in hairdressing. One of these
includes winning gold for New Zealand at the Goldwell Colorzoom competitions, being flown to Sydney and Las Vegas to compete on a world stage. His previous salon in Whangarei was Dan BLK Creative. With a passion for styling and training, Daniel is excited by this new challenge. While Daniel is at the forefront of the salon, Regan brings his years of corporate experience up from Wellington and applies it to the running of the salon. While Regan is not a hairdresser, he often helped out at his mother’s salon in Levin when he was young. Daniel says the products they use achieve a more natural effect than products using harsh chemicals. “Our colour products achieve a softer and more natural result and our clients are loving that there is no strong smell and no itchiness on their skin. The colour lasts for the same time as other products,’’ he says.

SUFFUSED MATTE A dense matte lip lasts especially well, which is why it is such a perennial party favourite. Lips need to be in tip-top smooth condition for matte formulas because, being less reflective, they show up dryness. Regularly and gently exfoliate with a sugar scrub or a rub of a damp flannel. To create a more 3D effect, add a small amount of a slightly deeper-toned eye shadow with a small, flat eyeshadow brush in the middle of your lip.
FLUSHED STAIN Think of this as starter red, or a way to wear the colour on days when you may not want to stand out. Prep your lips first with a conditioning lip balm. Apply stain of choice with the tip of a ring finger, dabbing from the middle outwards to create a soft, stained look as opposed to one with a defined lip line. Tap any excess colour on to the apples of your cheeks for a finely flushed finish.

You can buy them from most eye care providers and some sporting goods stores. Give your eyes a rest. Looking at a computer for a long time can tire out your eyes. he first thing that comes to mind when you say Christmas, is family. Now, no matter how much you love your family, spending time with them over the holiday season can be draining. Often we can find ourselves slipping into old behavioural patterns, playing a particular role within the family dynamic, dropping good habits to accommodate others, or getting pulled into squabbles. All in all, this results in feelings of frustration towards yourself and others. It doesn’t have to be this way. The key to experiencing a joyful Christmas with the family comes down to staying truthful to who you are and your needs, regardless if others see things differently. For example: • If you like exercising during the week when others prefer to watch TV/take a nap/sunbathe… don’t worry about it, simply go move your body. • If you don’t eat certain foods that other’s serve, that’s perfectly acceptable, just make sure you’ve brought what you need with you and have it available during joint meals. • If you need time to yourself to recharge, then take that time and let others know you’re popping out for a bit. The main thing here is, give yourself and others a chance to accept and see you as you are, rather than feeling you have to become a different version of yourself during this time. It is this tension within that causes frustration. PACKARD MOTOR MUSEUM – VEHICLE EHICLE OF THE MONTH
1962 Daimler Ferret Armoured Car

A
n intriguing vehicle at the Packard Motor Museum is the Daimler Ferret Armoured Car. It looks like a small tank, which it is, except with wheels instead of tracks. The Ferret was developed in 1949 in response to a need by the British Army for an updated light armoured vehicle to replace their WW2 Daimler Reconnaissance Scout Car (the Dingo). The Ferret went into production in 1952 and was manufactured through to 1971. It was used throughout the British Commonwealth, including New Zealand and Australia. The Ferret was similar to the earlier Dingo, but larger, heavier, more powerful and able to house a fully enclosed fighting compartment carrying a crew of two (commander and driver). It was robust enough to carry loads like AntiTank missiles.
The first model was the Mark 1, this vehicle had no turret and was lightly armoured. The lack of turret meant the gunner was dangerously exposed when operating the machine gun. The museum’s armoured red car is the Mark 2 version. This vehicle has heavier plating than the Mark 1 and was chine designed to operate a machine ersable gun in a one-man fully traversable turret through 360 degrees. While the turret protected the gunner, it made de the vehicle more conspicuous. The Ferret was small and fast enough to be useful in an urban environment ent but strong and agile enough with its 4x4 drive rive to negotiate rough terrain. Its size meant it was transportable by air. The NZ Army operated six Mark 2 Ferrets from 1961 to 1982; ours coming from a government auction.
The Ferret is powered by a 130hp 6-cylinder Rolls Royce petrol engine with a preselect gearbox, speed - 93km per hour and fitted with a 7.62 Browning MG (Nato 308) and six smoke grenade launchers.
Fishing tips & tales with John Vowless
H
i, I’m going to start with diving; Whangarei Harbour scallop diving is and has been very good. The scallops are very fat, even though water temperatures are still a bit low, and they are in good numbers. A recent group collected 70 scallops in short time and, when measured, only two were undersize, the rest were mostly well above the size minimum - Yahoo! Divers are also getting a few crayfish - it’s a good time to put on a wetsuit. Harbour snapper fishing has been a bit inconsistent; some anglers are getting limit catches in short time. David D and a mate report that, at the end of November, they caught their snapper limit in three hours and got a few kahawhai for smoking as well. They also caught and released seven stingray and, although we have a good number of rays in our harbour, catching this many is unusual.
Reports I’ve had, seem to show snapper fishing at present is much better up toward Onerahi. If you are struggling in your favourite spot, move up about 200 to 500 metres and try again. No good? Move up again. Repeat until you find the fish - this seems to be working. Outside the harbour is a mixed bag; torpedo fishing off Ruakaka Beach has been mostly poor but boats fishing out toward Three Mile Reef area are reporting good snapper catches of nice conditioned fish 350-400 long and are getting some good gurnard catches in 20 to 40 meters. The difference seems to be that most of the successful boat fishos are using softbaits and slider jigs. The action of the lures is making the fish strike. Most of the gurnard are being taken on lures also. Quite a few John Dory are also being caught, mostly on smaller whole fish baits. Out behind Guana Island and out at the Hen and Chicks islands, snapper catches

n Saturday January 25 the covers will be thrown back to reveal the two-day exhibition, revealing a multi-faceted array of top-quality art, with the potential to draw crowds from near and far. This will be the fourth annual One Tree Point Combined Arts Exhibition to be held in the marquee at Marsden Cove Marina, showcasing the work of 40 top Northland artists. The various genres on display include
– Painting, Leatherwork, Sculpture, Fibre, Photography, Pottery, Fine Woodwork, Jewellery and many more.
A significant point of difference here is that this is a Working Exhibition, where the public can watch and talk to the artists, as they are immersed in their creations. RENOWNED ARTIST EXHIBITS at Hangar Gallery
Northland fine artist Chris Wilkie takes a journey into Captain Cook’s ‘strange realities’ in his exhibition at the Hangar Art and Framing Gallery in the Regent, Whangarei.
C
hris is well-known in Whangarei for painting the murals on prominent buildings in the 1980s. His largescale murals and public works have featured all over New Zealand. Recognised today as an oil painter, his current work comprises paintings and graphite drawings on art paper that has been scorched at the edges to evoke the fragments of New Zealand’s past. His latest exhibition is inspired by Captain Cook’s role in New Zealand history 250 years ago. Chris was living in the South Island and stood on the same rocks in Dusky Sound
where Captain Cook had traded baubles with local Maori and where New Zealand historian Dame Claudia Orange found a trade marble under a rock. This symbol of early contact between Maori and Cook is featured in his painting Trevolution. Chris says Captain Cook and Joseph Banks and his crew heralded vast changes and upheavals to Aotearoa and around the world, becoming a champion to some and a figure of derision for others. “My work has moments of fantasy about past and present. I like to jump into the deep with my art.’’
Hangar Gallery specializes in showcasing the diverse talents of Northland artists who are part of the region’s grass roots arts culture. Chris’ style layers symbolism over dramatic New Zealand landscapes, each detail depicting aspects of Cook’s encounters with the tangata whenua. The artworks are moody and evocative, and at times whimsical, as he urges people to find the human side of our shared history. The multi award-winning artist works as an art teacher at Bay of Islands College and is currently living in Opua.
Among his major awards are the Northland Jubilee Art Award in 1988, the Invercargill Licensing Trust Art Award in 2012, and the prestigious Woolf Fisher Trust’s Fellowship in 1995. His works are held in many national, international and private collections. Hangar gallery owners Barry Squire and Megan Corbett are both artists in their own right and enjoy hosting exhibitions of Northland artists in their restored villa in the Regent which they bought about three years ago. Previously they had their framing business in Kamo. Hangar has opened six exhibitions this year, including solo shows and group exhibitions. Hangar Gallery specializes in showcasing the diverse talents of Northland artists who are part of the region’s grass roots arts culture. Highly qualified and experienced, Barry and Megan both have degrees in applied arts and find this knowledge has been helpful in the picture framing business where they strive to show each artwork off to its best advantage.

I
t can seem so overwhelming, opening the cabinets to a mass of products, random bits and bobs, first aid, beauty tools and long expired ‘testers and gift sets’. In terms of layout, if you are lucky enough to be able to design or redesign your bathroom from scratch, storage is king. There are a huge range of beautiful cabinets, vanities and storage solutions available on the market today. Get creative with what textures and tones you love in the rest of your house, and create a space which you love spending time in. For me that includes, natural textures and fibres (towels, bath mats and counter tops), a big deep bath for a weekly soak and magazine, a huge mirror cabinet to store all of my skincare jewels, and lots of natural light, if possible. As a self-confessed skincare and bath lover, I tend to spend a lot of time in my bathroom. And even though I have developed quite good habits, in terms of only buying what I love and use, I still manage to be overrun by products I don’t use daily which clutter up the cabinets, bath side and counter top.

You will find that if you use the same mindful approach to buying beauty goods as you do to the rest of your home, you will create a ‘capsule’ of products which you know and love and store and display them beautifully in your bathroom for maximum relaxation. 10 out of 10 for KiwiBuild in Whangarei With the objective of putting home ownership within reach of more New Zealanders, KiwiBuild Whangarei launched in May 2019 to the eager anticipation of many.
T
he properties (three completed homes and seven in development) were proudly launched to the market by Gregg Marsland and Lisa Gray from Ray White Whangarei who had over 40 hopeful purchasers through the first open day - and even pre-inspection offers (made off the plans) on the homes. "Buyer interest piqued early in the marketing with several offers prior to the first open homes, record attendance at open homes and such a diverse pool of interested buyers." said Lisa Gray. "Our first purchasers were a young couple in their twenties struggling to get on the property ladder - who settled in four weeks on their new 3 bedroom home. Over 90% of the homes sold in the first 4 months of marketing, with the final sale completed in October - just seven months after they launched, and with several people missing out on the property." The aim of the KiwiBuild program was to restore the dream of home ownership to families throughout New Zealand, by providing eligible first home buyers with exclusive access to a range of fixed price modest starter homes - which in Whangarei were priced from $460,000 to $500,000 ($10,000 below Whangarei median sales prices at the time.) All purchasers had to complete a prequalification process and were only eligible if they met these criteria: first home buyer
or ‘second chancer’; family income under $180,000 (single person under $120,000); citizen, permanent resident, or on a residency visa and living in New Zealand; and intend to live in the home for three years. The affordable, quality homes located in Kotata Heights were built by a leading NZ builders - including Jennian Homes, Generation Homes, Classic Builders and Signature Homes. With the Northland region at the forefront of
population growth nation-wide, recent figures show the Whangarei population is skyrocketing by nearly two thousand people a year and with prices also rising the demand is still here for affordable housing options. MAKE YOUR HOME BIGGER INSIDE THAN OUT
From when you go flatting in a cramped inner-city apartment to buying a first suburban home, if you're strapped for cash, then space is probably not in abundance.

on't fret, however, because that does not mean you are doomed to live in a tiny cramped box until you move, as there are numerous decorating ideas for making even the smallest of spaces seem like a lavish palace in comparison. Break out your work pants and call some of your friends to assist - it's time to start decorating! Go big Interior designers recommend using large furniture to make a room seem bigger. Though it may go against what seems like common sense, certain key items of furniture, such as a bed, make a room appear larger. Sticking with the bed example, using a large, comfy bed makes you cut down on other cluttering pieces which then brings the focus back to the bed itself as a centrepiece, with space all around it. You'll have floor space to get up in the morning, walk around, change your clothes or just sit and relax, basking in the breathing space of an unclogged area. Smart bookcases Another way to maximise spatial efficiency
is to make the furniture itself multipurpose. Rather than a free-standing bookcase jutting out of the wall, if you have the option, then make the wall itself the shelves! Shallow shelves that are a part of the wall are great for storing the same things as a normal bookcase but take up less space. You could even place them beside and around your centrepiece bed, allowing you to utilise them as bedside cabinets as well as shelves. Being a part of the wall also means wall bookcases can go up higher, using more of the space a wall provides for storage. Think about colour There are two things to avoid when considering colour: darker hues and mixed colours. Darker colours instantly shrink a room, whereas a different coloured ceiling and wall allows the eye to define where one meets the other and better judge the space.

Instead, opt for lighter colours such as Resene Black White and use it, alongside similar hues, for both your walls and ceiling. With this type of light colour coating everything, your eye will find it hard to judge where the ceiling is in relation to the walls and it will seem larger. Windows to another dimension A great way to open up a small space is to add large mirrors. They use this trick in elevators to expand the space and make it seem like the area is twice as large, which helps people who are claustrophobic. The same effect can apply to your living room or bedroom with the simple addition of a large-scale mirror, or a medium-sized feature mirror. Like a window to another room, these mirrors will give the illusion that you have more space than you actually do. For your cupboard door in the bedroom, consider a floor-to-ceiling mirror design instead of something solid. To curtain or not to curtain? Leaving your windows curtain-less will give the room a sense of openness, help bathe it in daylight and introduce a sense of space as the great outdoors is allowed inside. However, it's understandable that you might want a little privacy so curtains may be a must. If that's the case, don't worry because there are some great options to choose from. If you like the elegant look of a solid fabric, try ceiling-to-floor Resene Waltz curtains to create a strong line that appears to stretch the window, and thus, make the room seem taller. Alternatively, you could go for a lighter curtain such as Resene Harmony Voile to cover the window up, but still let plenty of daylight in.

BUYING A LIFESTYLE BLOCK
Looking to make a change and get out of the city?
A
re you ready for a quiet country property where the kids, chooks and maybe even a couple of sheep can roam? Buying and looking after a lifestyle block might look like an easy life but buying a lifestyle property can be a complex business. There’s a lot to love about living in the country, but you need to do more preparation for buying a place there than buying a pair of gumboots and comparing the merits of ride-on mowers.
What is a lifestyle block? If you’re looking for some fresh air and open space, or even just some peace and quiet away from the city, a lifestyle block can be a great option. While there’s no official parameters or land classification on what a lifestyle block is, a good rule of thumb is that the average block is just under four hectares. If you’re unsure whether a property is a lifestyle block, you can enter the address at www. qv.co.nz and look for the ‘Building Type’. Some councils also provide this information. A few things you may want to consider It’s always important to do your research when buying any kind of property, but rural ones come with a whole extra set of things to think about. It might be tempting to focus on the dream wish list, but you should also compile a list of issues to be aware of (and people who can help you learn about them). Some issues to be aware of might be: • How is the plumbing and septic system? Will this need to be upgraded? • Are there local schools nearby for your kids? If so, will a bus come pick them up? • Do you get broadband and cell phone reception? Check internet providers to see if a new broadband line will be able to be set up (don't just assume that if the neighbour has the internet, you'll be able to get it as this is not always the case).
• Is the property a flood risk? Check distances from local rivers and wetlands to ensure that the property is not a flood risk. More land means more responsibility, and this can be tough to maintain. You’ll be responsible for mowing the lawn, clearing debris and maintaining your garden, among other strenuous tasks. Make sure that you’re up for the challenge, or that you’re able to afford help with more difficult jobs. The real estate agent’s role If the property you like is being sold by a licensed real estate agent, remember that you can ask them anything you like about it. Generally real estate agents work on the seller’s behalf to get them the best possible sale price and conditions of sale. It’s important to remember this when you’re talking to a real estate agent about a property that you’re interested in. Rural real estate agents have special skills in this area, and they’ll be able to help you figure out what information you need to make a well-informed decision. It’s also a good idea to get your lawyer onboard early to check titles, consents and other information that you gather in the process. If you’re looking for specific type of property or if this is an investment for you, it might pay to hire a buyer’s agent. They can help search for properties and find out all the information about them, then bid at an auction or negotiate with the seller on your behalf. Check for covenants, easements and other restrictions that might impact the property It might feel like you’re getting away from it all when moving out of town, but rural developments can be subject to rules that restrict what you can do. Ask your lawyer to check if there are any covenants on the property that might have an impact on a future

business you may run there or any planned building projects. You don’t want to invest in an alpaca herd for your new dream property only to find that it’s not allowed to carry any livestock, or to discover that your subdivision plans are not permitted by council rules. Rural properties (like all properties) can also have easements on the title that relate to access, water or power. Ask your lawyer to check the title and work out what the easements are, and how they will have an impact on your rights and responsibilities as an owner. For example, if the title allows a neighbour access to a piece of their land through your property, do you have any right to limit the type and frequency of that access if you buy it? Be aware too that there may be ‘unofficial’ easements operating; the current owners may have an informal arrangement with their neighbours, but this may not remain when the property passes into new ownership. GST on lifestyle blocks Be aware that there may be tax implications if you’re planning to use the property as a business. In general, if it is currently being used for a business that is tax-registered – whether that’s selling organic eggs, grazing stock or running a B&B – then the seller will probably add GST to the price. This means you’ll pay an extra 15 per cent unless you are also registered for GST. Ask your lawyer or accountant to check if the house or any other buildings on the property are GST-exempt. They will also be able to advise you on whether you need to be GST-registered. Inland Revenue’s property tax decision tree is a good place to start when trying to figure out your tax obligations. Water and access right considerations Things that we take for granted when living in urban environments, like water, sewage

and access, can require more involvement in rural areas. Many rural lifestyle blocks are not connected to sewage schemes and instead rely on septic tanks or other sewage disposal systems. Check the water sources for the property – if it has its own bore, are there limits on the amount of water you can draw from it? What is the process for ensuring it is safe to drink? What happens to wastewater and sewage? Are you prepared for life with a septic tank? Will the current owner ensure the tank is empty as a condition of sale? If you’re buying a block with an existing dwelling, you’ll need to understand what type of system has been installed and whether it has the appropriate permits or consents and if there are any ongoing maintenance obligations. If you’re looking at a bare block of land, you should make sure you know whether resource consent will be required for sewage disposal and what the current council requirements are. It may also be necessary to ensure that any current resource consents are transferred to you on settlement. When it comes to access, will you share a private road or right of way with other properties? What will be your responsibilities and potential costs for maintaining it? Don’t forget that your neighbours may be involved in unglamorous activities at ungodly hours – check the zoning rules for nearby properties if you’re worried about noise, smells or traffic. You might think it’s lovely to have stock grazing out the window, but are you ready for a milk tanker driving past every morning? Be aware that the LIM will not always alert you to any pending or current New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) decisions regarding local highway linkages that often divert traffic away from urban centres in favour of immediate rural areas on the town boundary. Check with NZTA if you think your property could be affected by road changes. Questions to ask the real estate agent You may want to ask the real estate agent these questions to help you decide if the property is right for you and your family: • How far are the closest shops and amenities? • Where are the local schools, and does a school bus come near the lifestyle block? • Is there a motorway nearby and are there any NZTA plans for it? • What is the soil type, and which crops/ plants suit it best? • Am I allowed to graze stock on the property? • Can I subdivide the land? GUAVA MOTH – ARE THEY TAKING OVER YOUR GARDEN? BY DEBBIE OLDFIELD
G
uava moth is becoming the bane of most fruit growers’ existence. I have had them for the last threefour years in my feijoa trees and the fruit has just gone to waste. They are also starting to appear in my lemons, mandarins and plums. This year, I am going to start being proactive and do something about it. I’ve bought myself some Neem oil and a Hortex Hose sprayer to make it as easy as possible.
Here’s a bit of information on guava moth: • It is well-established in Northland and has made its way down to the Waikato and Coromandel over the last few years. It was first discovered in Northland in 1997. • They attack a wide variety of fruit, such as feijoas, plums, guavas, peaches, nectarines, macadamia nuts, lemons, mandarins etc. • Female moths lay their eggs on the young fruit and adjacent leaves and, upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the flesh causing considerable damage and loss. They are very hard to spot at this stage as they leave only a tiny pin-prick size hole as they go in. • Guava moth can breed all year round as there are so many different types of fruit they infect. They can build up to quite large numbers if not controlled. Have you got guava moth already? What to look out for: • Check for immature fruit drop - fruit will often drop before it is fully ripe. • Check windfall fruit regularly for markings, such as exit holes or small discolouration, or bruised-looking fruit. Killing those little blighters! This is hard to do. Using several methods is your best hope of controlling the population. Pheromone Traps - These work by replicating the pheromones produced by female moths in order to catch male moths. This will also give an indication of infestation and tell you when to spray. Neem Oil - Spray your diluted Neem oil all over your fruit trees, taking care to spray all the fruit. Best done when your trap shows the moths are present and when the fruit

Covering your fruit - Cover the fruit or the entire tree with fine netting as the fruit first starts to develop. Fruit only becomes infested with the larvae if the moths can lay their eggs on the fruit. Don’t cover the tree during flowering as the flowers won’t get pollinated by bees, birds or other pollinator insects. Biological Control - As the larvae tend to pupate close to the soil surface, chickens may well be helpful in reducing the numbers. Oil/Solar traps – There has been success with homemade solar lights that have been made into oil traps. There are examples of them online if you Google them. For best results, it's worth talking to, and working together with neighbours and your local community to really get on top of the problem.
