All roads lead to this colourful waterfront magnet

Yearsofplanningand hard work areonthe brink of culminating at Whangārei’sTownBasin with locals andvisitorsspoiltfor choice this summer.

WhileCovidhasslowedprogress, renderingsuppliesstuckin Auckland,localshavebeen watchingtheTownBasinprojects takeshapethispastyear,includingthehighprofileHundertwasserArtCentre(HAC).In addition,thenearbyWhangāreiArtMuseum (WAM)iscurrentlyundergoingacompleteredesignandupgrade.Combinethesetwowith theWairauMāoriArtgallery,locatedinsidethe HAC,andwehaveastrongnewartsoffering developingintheTownBasin.

HACchiefexecutiveKathleenDrummsays: “ThecombinedimpactoftheHundertwasser ArtCentreandWairau,aswellasotherdistinct andindependentgalleriesnearby–alongwith theHāteaLoopanditsoutdoorsculpturesand murals,cafesandshops-positionsWhangārei asavibrantartsandculturaldestinationfor nationalandultimatelyinternationalvisitors.”

ShesaystheHACprovidedNewZealand withaculturaltourismdestinationofworldclassstanding.

“Wewanttotransformpeople’slives throughanimmersiveexperienceofartand nature,andtodeliverathrivingdestination whichbringseconomicandsocialbenefitsto thepeopleofourregion.TheHundertwasser ArtCentrewillblowpeopleawaywithits handmadequalities,it’sbeautyanditsmany magicalfeatures.”

SaysMayorSherylMai:“Quitesimply,it’s extraordinary.Itexceedsmyexpectations, theexceptionalqualityofthefinish,

thecreativity,anditspresenceonthe sitecreatealastinglegacy.”

Shesaysitbringstothecityaunique world-classattraction,asourceofpride, andeconomicstimulus.TheWairauMāori artgallerywillbethefirstcuratedMāoriart galleryinAotearoa,whichwillelevateexposure tongātoiMāori.

“InthewordsofFriedensreichHundertwasser himself,weneed‘morehumanarchitecture inharmonywithnature’–hisprinciplesof sustainability,nature,harmony,andecologyare embodiedinthisproject.”

Thecentre,duetoopenFebruary20, willincludeagiftshopsellingexclusive

qualityhand-cra socks(whichFriedensreichHundertwasserwas afanof)andtilejewellerymadefromoff-cuts fromthebuild.Meantime,WAMwillhousea pop-upshopofferingaselectionofexclusive productsinspiredbyart,natureanddesign.

Theteamhaveworkedwithlocalartists andsupplierstosourceuniquetreasuresfrom Aotearoaandabroad-fromquirkyhomewares, interestingbooksandpuzzles,togorgeous jewellery,children’stoys,anduniquegifts.

Anotherprojectpassers-byhavebeen watchingdevelopisthenewpark,yettobe named,andnowsettoopenearlyMarch. LocatedbesidetheHAC,itcomprisesan amphitheatrewithterracedseating,alawn areaforcommunityeventsandrecreation,and aninteractivewaterfeaturewithilluminated sequencedwaterjets.Therewillbealarge kineticsculpture,publicamenitiesand,along withnearly5000newplants,are160new treesprovidingshadeaswellasagiantshade

structure.Itwillalsohaveasmallbalance parktocomplementtheexistingTownBasin playground,comprisingcolourfulrubber mounds,spinningballs,twosmallin-ground trampolinesandalowtightrope.

The$6.6millionprojectencompasses 1haoftheformerCanopyBridgecarparkand someoftheboardwalkarea.Itaimstolinkthe waterfront,LoopWalkwayandthecentralcity.

ThesitehasarichMāoriandEuropean history,whichhasprovidedplentyof inspirationforthepublicwhowereinvitedto putforwardnamingideasforthepark.Under theguidanceofrepresentativesofthehapu ofthearea,TeParawhauandNgatiKahuo Torongare,theMayorandallcouncillorswill selectaname.

SaysMayorMai:“Allroadsleadtothis waterfrontmagnet.ThenewTownBasinPark willprovideaspaceforallages,allabilities, andwillbeaplaceofgatheringforplay, food,entertainment,recreationandculture.”

Acrosstheharbour,anothernew$3m playgroundtokeepkidsentertainedalongthe loopiswellunderway,dueforcompletionearly nextyear.DestinationPlayground,onPohe Island,willprovidemoreadventurousplayon agreaterscale,featuringalargesandpit,flying fox,climbingstructures,slides,multipleswings, newtoiletsandspacetorunaround.

Meanwhile,anexcitingnewrestaurant calledAquahasopenedonsiteatthe HAC,alongwiththenear-completionofa neighbouringten-yearproject,theRolling BallClock.

SaysMayorMai:“It’sfabulouswhenlongtermvisionandplanscometogether.Weneed torecognisethemyriadofpeoplewhohave beeninvolvedinalltheseprojects,whohave believedinourdistrict,andareplayingtheir partinitscolourfulfuture.”

Decadeofonestep forward, twosteps back buthereweare

It’s been achallenging journey forthe team drivingthe Hundertwasser ArtCentre projectfornearlya decade. At thehelmfor most of it was Andrew Garratt, whoshareshis storywithJodiBryant

Almosttenyearsago,AndrewGarratt wasnonplussedabouttheprospect ofaHundertwasserArtCentrefor Whangārei.Nowhechokesbackthe tearswhilewalkingthroughthegrandbuilding hewasinstrumentalinbringingtofruition.

Despitehisinitialdoubt,theengineer eventuallygaveuphisjobasquality managertofocusfull-timeontheprojectas voluntaryprojectdirectorfrom2015,gaining momentum,anddescribingthelastfewyears as“adrenaline-plus”.

Itwasanelectoralsignstating: “HundertwasserORCleanHarbour?”,that propelledhisdecisiontogetinvolved.

“OriginallyIwasnonplussedabouttheHAC. Butmywife,JennyHill,wasveryenthusiastic aboutit-shehassubstantialexperiencein thebusinessofart.Ataboutthesametime, therewereelectoralhoardingsup.Onesaid: “HundertwasserORCleanHarbour?”,possibly putupbyaprospectivecouncillororanantiHundertwassercampaigner.

“Bycoincidence,Ihadjustbeenworking onanumberofmajorWDC(WhangāreiDistrict Council)seweragesystemprojectsthroughmy workwithacivilengineeringcompany.These projectshadbeenjustcompleted,literallywere donetopreventcontaminationoftheharbour andwereverysuccessfulatthat.SoIknewthe sewerageissuehadlargelybeensolvedandit annoyedmethatsomeonewasconveyingwhat Ifeltwasmisinformation.Byrights,thesign shouldhavesaid,“HundertwasserANDClean Harbour!”Interestingly,wehavethatnow.”

FriedensreichHundertwasserwasoneof themostcelebratedartiststocomeoutof Europeinthe20thCentury.Hecelebrated irregularlinesandcontrastingtexturesand coloursandwasacclaimedforhisworkwith colourandmosaics.

Inthe1970s,Hundertwasseracquired severalpropertiesintheBayofIslandsand, realisinghisdreamoflivingandworkingclosely connectedtonature,spentmostofhislast30 yearsinNorthland,becomingaNewZealand citizen.HisKawakawa-based,trademarkdesignedtoiletshavebecomeworld-famous withbus-loadsoftouristsstoppingindaily.

In1993,Hundertwasserwasinvitedtoselect abuildinginWhangāreisuitableforoneofhis world-famousarchitecturaltransformations foranartcentrewithin.Hedecidedtheformer NorthlandHarbourBoardbuildingattheTown Basinwouldbeidealtoturnintoaworkofart–thusbecominghispartinggifttoNorthland.

Hundertwassermadeanumberofvisits totheTownBasintostudythebuildingand sketchhisideas.Afterhisdeathin2000,the projectwasshelveduntil2008whenWDC purchasedthebuildingandmembersofthe counciltravelledtoViennatowinsupportofthe HundertwasserNon-ProfitFoundation.

ThefoundationpersuadedHeinz Springmann,anarchitectonmany Hundertwasserprojects,toproduceplans forWDC,capturingtheartist’svision.WDC committedfundingtowardtheprojectand planswentahead.However,in2014,newlyelectedcouncillorsvotedtocanceltheproject.

SaysAndrew:“Jennywasveryupsetabout thisprospectandurgedmetogetinvolved.I hadnoideahowIcouldhelp.”

Hejoinedagroupoflocalcitizensand formedProsperNorthlandTrusttodrivethe projectindependently.Nowfully-immersed, heresearchedHundertwasser,particularly theimpactofwherehisbuildingsaresituated aroundtheworld,alongwithwhatiscalled the“BilbaoEffect”,whichcentresaroundhow asingleiconicbuildingcanpositivelyaffecta city.BilbaoinSpainhastheGehrydesigned GuggenheimMuseumandithasstimulated transformativechangethere.

“Iwasalsoconcernedthatouryoung peoplewereleavingWhangāreiandnot returning.Wealsowerenotabletoattract youngprofessionalpeopletoWhangārei.At thetime,Whangāreihadverynegativesocial statisticsaswell.Tome,Whangāreididn’t seemtoshoutout“opportunity”,nordidit appeartoseizeonopportunities.”

In-depthresearchfollowed,includingtripsto AustriaandGermanyand,“Everythingpointed toaworld-renowniconicfacilitycontributing significantlyandpositivelytoWhangāreiby beingauniquepointofdifference.”

Theprojectfinallygotunderwayin2015 afteraWDCreferendumaskedhowthepublic wishedtheformersiteoftheHarbourBoard buildingtobeused.Morethan50percent votedtobuildtheartcentre.

Followingthe referendum, acoreteam ofaround20 volunteerswas assembled and calledtheProjectAction Team (PAT).Withinthis team were lawyers, construction experts,anaccountant,a politician,marketingand communications expertise,an eventmanager,liaisonwith tāngatatewhenua, adatabasespecialist, administrators,projectmanagersand artists.Theyset about raisingfundsand getting consent forthebuilding,as well as raisinganunderwriteandbuilding Te Kakano,a ‘practicepiece’required by the Hundertwasser Foundation.

“Crucially,weoperatedasabusiness,not acommittee,sowewereincrediblyefficient withstrategy,changemanagement,decisionmakingandworkedononlywhatmattered.”

Followingthesuccessfulandinsightfulbuild ofTeKakanoin2016,constructionworkbegan.

Thecontroversial$33.2millionproject hassinceemployedmorethan500peopleof varioustradesandinvolvedtensofthousands ofcolouredtilesand40,000recycledredbricks. InkeepingwithHundertwasser’sgrass-roof theme,ithasthelargestafforestedroofinthe

southernhemisphere.Anothermajormilestone wasmarkedthisyearwithagoldencustomand locally-madeoniondomecupola-asignature featureofmanyofHundertwasser’sbuildings –bargeduptheHāteaRiverandcranedinto placeatopthebuilding.

When reflectingontheproject’sjourney andthemanyhurdlesencounteredalong the way, Andrew says:“Fromthetime Iwas first involved,therealwaysseemed to be majorchallengeswhereeach could stop theproject; Whetheritbehaving to wina referendumor foundationdesign changes thatsubstantiallyaffectedthe required funds to start construction.Therealways seemed to besomething keepingmeawake at twointhemorning.”

OfPAT,hesays,“Noneofushadfundraising experienceofnotebutwehadpassion,a commonvisionandcommitment.

“Withthisteamanda:“Thinkhowwecan–notwhywecan’t”,attitude,allproblemshada solution.WhileImayhavehaddoubtsmyselfat times,theteam,asawhole,didn’t.

"Theteammadeithappen.Weall bolsteredeachother.ThePATwasgreater thanthesumofitsparts.Weachieved everythingwesetouttodo.”

TheHAC,duetoopeninFebruary,isthe world'slastauthenticbuildingdesignby thelateAustrian-bornartistandarchitect. Itwillhousetheonlypermanentcollection ofHundertwasserworksoutsideAustriaandbe thenewhomeoftheWairauMāoriArtGallery.

Andrewbelievesitbringsaclear,positive identitywhichsignifiesthecityasaplacetobe.

“Itistremendouslysatisfyingtoseethe buildingnowbeingusedasthebackdropforTV reports.Iamextremelyproudofthebuilding andeverythingthatgoeswithit.Ichokeback tearswhenIwalkthroughit.Itisastaggering pieceofartandarchitecture,builtbylocals, someofwhomhavebecomeartiststhemselves inordertodothework.Peoplewhoseeitfor thefirsttimewillbegobsmackedbyitspower, magnitude,detailandartistry.

“Everyonewhocontributedinsomeway, whateveritwas,ownsapieceofthatbuilding andtheyshouldbeveryproudofit.Itisa symbolofwhatcanbedonewhenwethink howwecan–notwhywecan’t.”

Good things take timeand, whilethere have been anumber of delays forthe Town Basin’s Rolling Ball Clockproject,itis settodeliver thetimeina worlduniqueway from January.

Theprojecthasbeeninthemakingfor around13yearssinceagroupoflocals cameupwiththeideaforarolling-ball timepiece,inspiredbyaballclockat ClaphamsClockMuseum.

Originallydueforcompletionearlierthis year,anumberofCovid-relatedset-backsand mechanicalissueshavedelayedtheprojectbut nowprojectmanagerWarrenThomassays,“It worksbeautifully”.

“Theconstructionoftheclockmechanical workingpartsisallcomplete.Itiscurrently undergoingtestingandperformancetrials.Due tothecomplexityofthemechanism,therehas

Theprojecthasbeendriven bytheAboutTimeteamwho formedwiththeaimofcreating atime-measuringsculpture toalsoprovideamajortourist attractionwitheducational andculturalvalues.

Followingthesuccessful constructionofafull-size workingdemonstration modelin2016,theWhangārei DistrictCouncil(WDC) acceptedtheclockasagift andallocatedasitenextto

Aquaisthenameoftherestaurantandbar basedattheHundertwasserArtCentreandhas beendubbedthehottestdiningticketintown.

ItisownedbyWhangāreibornand bredSteveO’Sheawhohasalongcareerin hospitalityinternationallyand,mostrecently,in aleadershiproleatlocaleateriesTheQuayand No8Restaurant&Bar.

SaysSteve:“Wewanttodeliveraninternal spacethatisaswonderfulasthearchitectural projectitself.”

The teamhaveworkedwithlocal artisans to produceexquisiteone-off

piecesthatare eyecatchingandelegant. Forexample, they commissionedlocal artistJustin Culina,believedtobeoneof thebestglassartistsinNew Zealand, to mouthblowaseriesof pendantlightsthat arecompletelyirregular in shape to usein variouspartsofthe restaurant.

Asforthefood,inspirationsaredrawnfrom thePacific,whichhasanabundanceofstyles thatallownewandexcitingdishes,along withflexibilitytoshowcasedifferentcuisines. InkeepingwiththeHundertwassertheme, sustainabilitywillbeaprioritywithsourcing locally,alongwithrecycling.

Aquaoffersabrunch,lunchanddinner menudaily,alongwithabar.

“However,wehaveidentifiedaclearand

strongdesirewithinthelocaldiningmarket forelevatedfoodexperiences.Intandemwith ouralacartemenu,wewillofferaveryspecial menuthatwearecalling‘FoodSafari’-simply put,itisafive-coursedegustationmenuthat willchangeregularly,aswillitsmatchingwine list,”explainsSteve.

“Wealsowanttodeliverexternalfood

ClaphamsattheTownBasin,whereaconcrete foundationnowawaits.Thenbeganyearsof fundraisingforthe$1m-plusproject,along withconstructioncarriedoutbyAbsolute StainlessandCookCostello.

Anumberofcriticalcomponentsandtasks hadtobecarriedoutbyfirmsinAuckland. However,sincetheindustriesinvolvedwere notviewedasessentialand,therefore,locked down,thishassimplyaddedtimetothe project,saysWarren.

Anotherhold-upwastheshipmentof spareAmericanbowlingballsthattheclock operateson.

Thefinalstepoftheprocessisthe installationofaspecialPou,whichcaptures theculturalidentityoftheclock.Thiswill beinstalledimmediatelybeforetheJanuary unveilingandopeningceremonywhena specialnamewillbeannounced.

ThestructurefocusesontheMāorimoon calendarandwillprovideeducational opportunitiesforschoolstoshowchildren mathematics,physicsandtheculturalaspectof theballclock.

Warrensaystheprojectprovided stimulationfortheteamduetothechallenges metalongtheway.

“Wetoiledawaywithenthusiasmandskill tosolvethewiderangeofchallengesthat anycommunityprojectpresents.Oneofthe criticalstageswastheinitialdisbeliefthatsuch aconceptwouldeverwork.Iamsurethatthe buildingandrunningofthedemonstrationball clockwasacriticalcomponentinteambonding andholdingustogetherforthemiddleyears.”

Creatingwearablebeauty fromHundertwassertileoff-cuts

As thedistinctive Hundertwasser building formed at Whangārei’s centralTownBasin,sotoo didanideainlocalartist MareeBenson’shead.

Theideabloomed,andhercreative handssoontookover,materialising theconceptthroughmany trialanderrors,andultimately producingbeautifuljewelleryfromleftover Hundertwasserprojecttile.

“Myheadisbuzzingwithamillionideas,” explainsthe44-year-oldmumoftwo.“Asthe Hundertwasserbuildingtookshapeherein Whangarei,onenotionthatstuckoutformewas creatingsomesortofjewellerythatwouldmirror Hundertwasser'sstyle.Itseemedlikeallthestars alignedwhenIwasaskedifanythingcouldbe donewiththeleftovertilesfromthebuild.”

ArthasalwaysbeenabigpartofMaree’s life.Someofherearliestmemoriesarewithher sisters,sprawledinfrontoftheTVwithfelts andpaper,drawingthecharacterstheywere watching.

“Icomefromaveryartisticfamilysomy homewasalwaysfilledwithartsuppliesand loadsofcoolmediumstogetthecreative visionsflowing.Mumwouldoftensetupthe kitchentablewithsomesortofartproject, whichmeandmysisterswouldgetlostinfor hours.Itrytodothesameformytwogirls.

“Anythingtodowitharts,craftsandmusicis anoutletwhereIcanjustbefreeandrelaxand getlostin.It'strulymyhappyplace.Myhands aremytools.”

Mareerecalls,whilegrowingup,herdad oftentalkingaboutafamilyfriendwhowasa jewellerintown.

Thisplantedaseedand,afterbeingtold

tookmeonashisapprentice.Helikedmy artworkandthoughtifIcoulddrawIwould beabletoseethingsthatyoucan'tteachin jewellerymaking.Iwillbeforevergrateful forhimtakingmeonbecausehegavememy career,”shesays.

Fast-forward20years,afterworkingin severalworkshopsalongtheway,shehasset upherownjewellersworkshopandcontractsto variousjewellersaroundNorthlanddoinghandmakes,repairwork,aswellascommissions foragrowingclientelemakingthelikesof engagementanddressrings.Shealsodesigned ajewelleryrangebranded'JewellerybyMaree' stockedbyvariousjewellers,galleriesand fashionboutiques.

Mareehadalwaysbeenakeenadmirerof Hundertwasser'sarchitectureandartwork, withthe“organiccurvesandboldcoloursthat arelacedwithlashingsofgold-sorichandbold andfun”.Sheevenonceusedhisartworkas inspirationwhendesigningascreenprintfor fabricwhenstudyingatatextilesandfashion designschoolinherlateteens.

WithtilesnotamaterialMareehadever workedwith–preciousstonesandmetalsare herusual–herchallengewastolearnhowto cutandshapethetileswithoutchippingthem.

Theoff-cutsareindividuallycutout,then shapedbyhandtorepresentHundertwasser's

architectureanddesign.Thentheyare mountedinsilverandcoppermimickingthe beautyofapreciousstone.

“I'velearntthatalltilesaredifferent.Some areverythicksothereisalotofgrinding butthesetilescanbequitesoft.Someof thethinnertilescanbeveryhardtoshape andgrinddown.Ihadtoworkouthowto makethetilesintojewellerythatwasgoing tobewearableandpleasingtotheeye whilereflectingtheunmistakablestyleof Hundertwasser.

“Iremembernuttingitoutinmyworkshop andseeingthatitwasactuallycomingtogether. Igotsoexcitedtoseetheendresult,thatI racedthroughthestepslosingconcentration andputasawbladethroughmyfinger.Idon't thinkIwillforgetthatmoment!”

Shesaysitwasdauntingtolearnhersamples weregoingtobeshowntotheboardinVienna.

“BythisstageIfeltsoinvestedintheproject thatIdesperatelywantedittogoahead.Iknew rejectionwasapossibilitybutIcouldn'tbear topreparemyselfforit.Iguesswhenyoumake art,itbecomeslikeyourbabies,soitfeltso amazinghearingthattheywereapprovedandI couldproceed.”

HerdreamofHundertwasserArtCentre (HAC)visitorshavingtheoptionoftakingaway apieceoftheuniquearchitecturetocherish, willcometofruitionwhentheHACgiftshop opensinFebruary.

Aspamperingasitistohaveaspecialistgiveyoua toe-to-heelpedicure,youcanfollowthesamestepsto achievesimilarresultsathome.

Step1:SoakYourFeet

Arelaxingfootsoakfor15to20minuteswilldowonders. Foralittlebitmoreofatreataddsomearomatherapyoil tothewater.Theveryactofsoakingyourfeetwillloosen dryscalesandsoftenthethick,hardenedlayersofskin onheels,toes,andballsofthefeet.

Donotusewaterthatistoohot.Thiscancause theskintobecomedryandcrackasthewater quicklyevaporatesanddrawsmoisturefrom thestratumcorneum(theoutermostprotectivelayer ofcellsoftheepidermis).Useatoenailbrushtogently scrubyourtoenailsattheendofthesoak.

Step2:TrimYourCallusesandCorns

Step4:Exfoliatethefeet

Exfoliationcanbedonewithafootscraperora pumicestone.Remembertopayparticularattention toyourheelsbecausethisiswheremostofthedry skinis.Donotignorethepadsunderyourtoes.Once you’veexfoliatedboth,gentlypatdrywithatowel.If youdon'thaveafootscrubbinggel,thenyoucan useyourregularfacialscruborbodyscrubaswellto exfoliateyourfeet.

Step5:MoisturiseandMassage YourFeet

Tofinishyourtreatmentapplyamoisturizerwhich willre-hydratetheskin.
