London Globe star back in thehumbling Hokianga
BackinMay,MāhangaMitchellhad neverlefttheNorthIslandbutafter performingcentrestageattheworldfamousGlobeTheatreinLondon,the actingstudentfromtheFarNorthhasthetravelbug.
However,the18-year-oldproudNgāpuhiteenknowshis roots–when Savvy caughtupwiththeWellingtonVictoria UniversitystudentstudyingaBachelorofArtsintheatreand Māoristudies,hewasbackhomeintheremoteHokiangafor theholidays.
“BeinginHokiangaishumblingand,notforonemoment whenIwasoverseas,didIforgetwhereIcamefromandwho Iam.”
Māhangagrewupastheyoungestofninesiblingsinthe far-flungHokiangawheretereowashisfirstwrittenandspoken languageandkapahakaaneverydayadoredactivity.
“Itwasquiet.Theonlyneighboursreallyarecows.You’ve gottojumponthequadtogetdowntonan’shousetogosee thecousins.It’sallgravelroadsandbarefeetandwe’dgoplay inthebush.That’swhatitwaslikegrowingupintheHokianga –it’sraw.”
ItwasamovetoWhangāreiBoys’HighSchool(WBHS), whereheboardedatCarruthHouse,thatopenedhiseyesto theworldofacting.Hebegantakingdramaanddiscoveredhe hadaflairforacting.
HisWBHSYr13classperformed afreshanddarktakeonascene from Macbeth withMāhangaplayinga chillingversionofBanquo'sghost.The winnersrepresentedNorthlandatthe NationalSheilahWinnShakespeare FestivalfinalsinWellington.
Fromthere,hewaschosenfor theNationalShakespeareSchool Production(NSSP),whereMāhanga puthisownspinonthescript, takingaculturalapproachand translatinghischaracter’slines fromWelshintoEnglish,thente reoMāoriandparaphrasingall referencesofWelshmythologyto fitaMāorimythologicalcontext.
Itwasahitandhewassubsequentlyselectedto
Māhangawasoneof50KiwistotraveltotheGlobe, includingactorschosenfromtheprevioustwoyearsunable totravelduetoCovidrestrictions.Uponarriving,theywere giventheirscript,withMāhangacastasEdmundinKing Lear.The50-minuteperformanceconcludedwithamoving hakaledbyMāhanga.Hesaystheexperiencewasmade extraspecialwiththelightraindriftingthroughthelights fromtheopenroofstageastheyperformedthehaka.
“TheonethingIsaidtomyselfbeforeIwentintherewas thatIwantedtoincorporatemoreofmycultureintomy performance,andIdid,”saysMāhangadescribinghowhaka movementswereintegratedintotheirperformance.“Ileftit alloutthereandIgotrecognisedforit.
“Butthenitwasliketheperformancedidn’tevenexist afterourhaka.AlltheEnglishcouldn’tgetenoughofit-it wasalltheycouldtalkabout.Wecameoffstageandallthe directorsandtheirkidswerecominguptome,justinawe. They’dneverseenanythinglikeit,otherthantheAllBlacks onTV,”recallsMāhanga,clearlystillbuzzing fromtheexperience.
Hedescribestheexperienceas“lifechanging”.
“Itjustblewmyperspectiveoftheworldand it’snotuntilyougothereandstepintosomeone else’sland,yourealisejusthowdifferentthings arearoundtheworld.
“Ilovedthewholeprocessofit.Itwas challenging.Togetagrasponthatmuch knowledgeandthewaytheyfedittous,wejust uldn’tstopeating.Thestyleofactingthey ughtus,Ineverwouldhavegotanywhereelsein theworld.It’sgotmyfootinthedoorandI’vecome ckalevelaboveandwithpersonalcontacts.But I’llalwaysknowwhoIamandwhereIamfrom.”
One step closer towards capturing nuptials
Aftersurviving adevastating bridalhelicopter crashlastyear, Northlandphotographer RachelJordanhasrecently shotherfirstweddingas shetakesstepstoward rebuildingherlife.
The42-year-olddefied oddswhenshewalked outofAuckland’sspinal unitthreemonthsafterthe crashandnowwalkswiththeassistanceofcanesand carriesoutherbelovedphotographywiththeaidofawalker.
“Itwasdefinitelydifferent,”shesaysofshootingthelocal outdoorwedding.“Ihadahelperwithme.It’sjustlearningand figuringoutwhatIneedforthefuture,butIwaspleasedwiththe outcomeandthephotosturnedoutawesome.”
Theweddingwasabookingshe’dhadsincebeforebothCovid andthecrash,whichoccurredinCanterburyinJune2021asthe aircraftliftedoffboundforthepicturesqueSouthernAlpswhere shewasplanningtophotographthenewlyweds.
Allfouronboard,includingthepilot,survived,suffering extensiveinjuriesafterthepowercutofftotheRobinsonR44 beforeitplungedsome100mtothegolfcoursebelowwherethe brideandgroomhadearlierexchangedweddingvows.
Rachel’sinjuriesincludedafracturedspine,alongwithseven ofherribsandsternum.Onelungwashalflaceratedbyherribs, andshebrokeherrightwristandfracturedbonesinherfeet andankles.Shealsosufferedabrainbleed,thoughhashadno lastingeffectsfromit.
Afterundergoingmultiplesurgeries,shedidn’tletherselfstay downinthedumpsforlong.Thenaturallypositivethinkerdecided shewasgoingtowalkagainandweanedherselfoffallmedication and,incredibly,onthedayshewasduetoleavehospital,tookher firststepsandwalkedoutwiththeaidofawalkingframe.
"ItoldeveryoneIwaswalkingoutofthere,Irefusedtonotbe walking.Itwasmygoal,”shesaidafterwards.
AfterreturningtoKerikeri,wheresheliveswithhusband EricandsonEvan,11,shespendshoursadayworkingoutto strengthenherbody.

“Iwasalreadyagoal-orientedhuman–Ihavetohave goalsinlifeandbecreating.Idon’tsitanddwellonthe accident,Ijustthinklifetakesyouonajourneyandthere’sa purposetoit.”
Whileoriginallyparalysedbelowthewaist,Rachelcan nowfeeleverything,andwalkswithcanes.Earlierintheyear, sheresumeddriving–andtheschooldrop-off.Gettingback intoherbelovedgarden–herotherpassion–washugely rewardingonceshemasteredit.
Thisyear,Rachelhasbeenrefocusingonportrait photography–lesstaxingonthebodythanwedding photography.Herrecentreturntoweddingphotographywas somethingsheneverthoughtwouldhappen.
“IneverthoughtI’devershootweddingsagain physicallyandIfeellikeIstilldidagreatjob.You’vegot tobereallyfasttoshootweddingsbut,ifI’mcarefulwith mylocations,thenI’mgood.Mystamina’simprovedandit workedoutreallygood.
“I’mnotasable-bodiedasIwaspriorbutthatdoesn’t meanIcan’tdoit,IjustneedmodificationsandIknowwhat Ineedinfuture.”
Havingtoturndowndozensofweddingbookingshad beenthehardestaspectforRachel,shesaidbackinJune.
“I’veactuallycriedmoreoverthat.Thephysicalaspectis finebutIlovedcapturingpeople’sdays,Ididitfor13years andshothundredsofweddings.Itwasprettymuchmylife everyweekend.It’sliketakingpartofmysoul.”
Themulti-award-winningphotographer,whosecareer beganover25-yearsago,planstore-opentheirTwoLittle Starfishbusinessfornextseason’sweddings.
Fornow,she’stakingonestepatatime.
“MygoalistowalkunassistedbutifIneedtowalkwith canesfortherestofmylife,sobeit.
“IthinkI’msuper-luckythatmybodyishealingandcan move,whereitcouldhavebeensomuchworse.It’sjust acompletelydifferentshiftinthewayIseeeverything.If somebodyhastheirhealthandareabletodostuff,then they’resuper-blessed.”
Seahorseserenityamid emotionalturmoil
It’sbeentwoyearsofheartacheforAlyceCharlesworth, particularlywiththelossofherbelovedfatherandmentor lastmonth,butaconstantcomfortamongtheupheaval,are hertranquilseahorses.
Alyceoftenseekssolacewithintheirserenitywhiletheworld assheknowsit,fallsapart.
“Nomatterwhathappensinlife,thoseseahorsesstillget100 percentfromme,”shesays.“Withdadonlyjustpassing,it’sstill veryfresh.Butfisharedefinitelyaconstantinourchaoticlives.”
HerfatherJohn,diagnosedwithcancerin2020,hadtaughther hisfishtaxidermytrade,whichhadbeenpassedtohim20years agobyAlyce’sgrandadGeorgeCampbell,founderandcuratorof thefamousWhangāreiMuseumofFishes.
Whenthepopularmuseumcloseditsdoorsin2002,George’s collection,oncedescribedbyinternationalichthyologists as“oneofthebestfishdisplaysintheworld”,wascarefully packagedandsenttothenewownersinNelsonbut,sadly,most neversawthelightofdayagain.
"Itwasabitheart-breakingforhim.Hiscollectionwashis life'sworkandsuper-precious.Hewantedittobeusedfor education,forfuturegenerationstoenjoy,”saysAlyce,whois determinedtocarryonhergrandfather’slegacy.
Whilemanyofthemuseum’slivefishwerereleased,George retainedsomeintanksorpondsathishome,includingthesea horsesandaquartercentury-year-oldcoralfish.Healsokept theoriginalfishcastingsandAlyce’sfatherJohnpickedupand continuedthetaxidermyrole.
“Thetaxidermyisgoingokbutitwillbestrangegoingback totheworkshopwithoutthebossaround.Hewasproudof myprogressthoughandwemadevideotutorialsinthepast twoyearssoIcanlookbackonhisadviceifIneedto.AndI havegrandad,theoriginalmaster,toaskifIreallygetstuckon something,”saysAlyce.
Thetwohavealwaysbeenclose,withmostofAlyce’s childhoodmemoriescenteredaround themuseum.Whiletooyoungto interveneinthemuseumclosure, twodecadeslater,Alyce,31,plans tocontinuetheirsharedmarine conservationplightbyresurrectingthe museum,albeitina21stcenturystyle.
Aswellasthecombinationof three-generationaltaxidermies, itwillagainbeaccompaniedwith livespecies,includingtheoriginal MuseumofFishesseahorse25-plusyear-oldGeoJoe,namedafter GrandadGeorgeJosephCampbell.
AlycetookonGeorge’ssixsea horsesseveralyearsago,whichwith herdedication,thrivedtothepoint thattheymultipliedandshewas shockedtofindhertankonemorning swarmingwithbabyseahorses.
Fromthere,her educationonseahorserearingwasfast-tracked.
Untilrecently,she hadplanstoreunite GeoJoewiththeonly otherremainingmuseum resident-George’s25-plus-year-oldLordHowe coralfish,whohadalsomajorlyexceededitslifespan.However, since Savvy photographedthepairtogetherinFebruary,ithas died,andGeorgehassubsequentlytaxidermiedit.
Yes,whilehe’s,understandably,sloweddown,George,88,can stillbefounddoingwhathelovesathisoriginalOnerahistomping ground,whereseahorsesonceswamalongthewater’sedge.Last monthhediscoveredbabyeelsatthedrainbyhisletterbox,which hetookin.
“TheeelstravelledbackfromtheseasoffTongaandthey moveacrosslandinwetweathertryingtofindagoodspottocall home.Andtheydefinitelyfoundagoodspotwithhim,”sayshis granddaughter.
HealsostillhuntsdownliveshrimpsforAlycetofeedhersea horses.“Eighty-eightyearsoldandsupplyingmewithshrimps whilelifeishectic,”shesmiles.“He'sthebest.”
Lastmonth,AlycetooktwoofhersixseahorsestoKamo PrimarySchool,triallinganideatoreachthecommunity,much tothedelightofthekidsandteachers.
However,duetotheseasonaltemperatureincreaseandsea horses’sensitivitytoit,theiroutingswillgoonholduntilafter summer.Meanwhile,Alycehasplanstosetupthenurseryand breedmoreseahorses,ratherthanleaveittochanceagain.
WhenJohnwasdiagnosedwithcancer,Alyceleftherjob andsteppedintofinishhislistofwork.Sheisnowworking oncuratingacollectionofmountstobringsomeoftheold creaturesfromourcoastbacktolifetotelltheirstories.Plans forthe20-yearanniversaryofthe museumclosingtookabackseat fterAlyce’smotherFayewasalso diagnosedwithcancerearlierthis year.WhileAlycesaysthather motheris“doingok”,shecontinues withherownhealthbattleswhile grievingthelossofherhusband.
“Theultimategoalhasn’t changed–Iwantthatdiscovery centre/MuseumofFishes2.0for Northland.Ithinkthere’salotof peopleouttherewhowouldloveto experiencewhatI’vebeenblessed toexperienceandIthinkNorthland needsitagain.Thereissomuch ressandunpleasantnessinthis worldandIcandefinitelyvouchfor theeffectyouhavefromwatching seahorsesgoingabouttheirday.”

SaysKerry:“Winter wasnotasbadaswe thoughtitmighthave beenwiththenewcaravan.Ithas heatinginitsoitwasgreat.”

Theycitetheprosofcaravanlifeas:less housework,nowaterorpowerbills,getting toknowtheneighbours,nostress,havingthe familycomeandgo,thesimplelife,andfeelinga lotmorerelaxedandhappierwithinthemselves. Theconsare:rememberingtoemptythetoilet andcheckingthesolarandbatteries.
WhangāreicoupleKevinandKerry Heathditchedtheirmonotonous lifestyleforoneonwheelsand,one yearon,they’veneverlookedback. Savvy caughtupwiththematUretitiBeach DOCCampsiteinJanuary,onemonthinto theirlifestylechangeand,thoughapictureof contentedbliss,theywererealisticaboutthe challengesofanimpendingwinter.
Bothpreviouslymarriedwithfamilies,the formerhomeownershadbeenrentingtogether for20yearsand,afteranumberofset-backs, couldnotgetahead.Whentheirhard-earned savingsdestinedtobuytheirfirsthometogether wasdeniedbythebankandtheycouldno longeraffordescalatingrent,coupledwiththe headacheofthree-monthlyinspections,they tookmattersintotheirownhandsbyupping sticksandpurchasingacaravan.

It’sbeenarockyfewmonthsforfatherof threeJamesPearks,who Savvy caughtup withinSeptemberasheembarkedonlifesavingimmunotherapycosting$93,000. InJune2021,aseeminglyfitandhealthy Jameswasdiagnosedwiththeextremelyrare andaggressiveCholangiocarcinoma(bileduct cancer),throwingacurveballatthefamily’s busybuttypicallifestyle.Abileductisatube thatcarriesbile,adigestivefluid,connecting theliver,gallbladderandsmallintestine.In NewZealand,around185arediagnosedayear.
JameshadsurgerythatSeptembertoremove threequartersofhisliverandhisgallbladder, beforebeginningchemoforthenextsixmonths.
InApril,ascanshowedthe47-year-old cyclistwasintheall-clearandtwomonthsof cancer-freelivingensued.
“Itfeltlike,‘Phew,gotthroughthat,thank God,nowlet’stryandbuildyourimmune systembackupandbuildyourstrengthback up’.Jameshadstartedworkingpart-timeatMy Ride-ajobhe’dalwayswantedtodo.Heloved it,itwasafreshstart,”Darlene,47,shared.
Buttheirnewleaseonlifewasshort-lived.
James’sstomachhadstartedtoswell withtheeventualverdictthatthecancerwas backbutthistimetotheperennialwallofhis abdomen,whichisinoperable.
“Itwashorrific,”Darlenerecalled.
Theprognosiswasthree-fourmonthsor 12monthswithpalliativechemotherapy, whichJamesbeganimmediatelyatthelocal JimCarneyCancerTreatmentCentre.They decidedtotrialanimmunotherapytreatment calledKeytrudaeverythreeweeksalongside
Withfurnituresoldandsentimentalitems instorage,themuch-lovedKamoIntermediate caretakers’livesarecondensedintotheir23-ft, 2015JaycoSterlingTourerandthere’snothing abouttheiroldlifetheymiss.
“Thelastyearhasbeenwonderfuland relaxing.Tocomehomeafterworkandbeable tolookoutattheoceanandlistentothewaves orgoforawalk,itissospecial.”
Withamaximumstaytimeofthreemonthsat sites,theydescribeitasagypsywayoflifeand
thefortnightlychemotherapy.However, unlikechemotherapy,thisisnotfundedin NewZealand.
Immunotherapyisatreatmentadministeredintravenously–aimedathelping one’sownimmunesystemfightcancerby recognisingandattackingcancercells.
Ayear’s-worthofimmunotherapytreatment costs$93,000withthefirstfoursessions–at $9,100each-crucialtofindoutifitisworking. Jameshadcompletedtworoundsand,whilehis Septemberscanshowedadecreaseincancer, heobtainedabacterialinfectioninhisbloodso neededtostopbothtreatmentstorecover.He missedtwoinfusionswiththescanshowingan increaseincancer.Buthavingrecentlygothis infectionundercontrolandresumingKeytruda, Darlenesaystheyarebackontrack.
Onceretired,thecoupleplantoexplorethe countryintheircaravanbut,fornow,based backatUretiti,theyarelookingforwardto arepeatoflastsummersurroundedbytheir blendedfamily,whichincludessevenchildren and19grand-children.
“Wesmileandlaughalotmore,”saysKerry, confirmingtheyarestillapictureofcontented bliss.“Homeiswherethefamilyisandthishas justliftedourspirits.It’sfreedom.

On show at Whangārei ArtMuseumNovember 19 -February 19,Gathering Rust is the firstretrospective exhibitionof Yvonne Rust’s artwork since 2002.
BorninWhangārei,Yvonnespent muchofherworkinglifeasahigh schoolartteacherinCanterburyand theWestCoast.Later,shewouldbe animportantfigureinthedevelopmentof Northland’sartcommunity,asthedrivingforce behindthefoundationoftheNorthlandCraft Trustin1979andthesubsequentestablishment oftheQuarryArtsCentrein1980.Despiteher prominentroleinthecreativeindustriesof theregion,shehasremainedcomparatively underappreciatedbythewiderpublic,andher workislargelyheldinprivatecollections.
Yvonnewaspartofabroadertradition ofmid-twentieth-centuryNewZealand modernistswhogravitatedtowardscraftmedia, particularlyceramics,continuingtheBauhaus traditionofblurringthelinesbetweenpurely aestheticandfunctionalobjects.Amongst
theworksondisplay,canbeseendrinking vessels,vasesandfountains,aswellasadrum, alampandabaptismalfont.Despitehaving beentrainedasapainter,Yvonnedidnot begintopaintseriouslyuntillaterinlifebut producedasubstantialbodyofwork.These paintingsreflectedinsomewaystheregionalist modernismofherera,butinfusedwithher ownnon-conformistspiritanddisregardfor dominantartistictrends.
Theaimofthisexhibitionisbothto celebrateYvonne’soeuvreandtoattemptto collate,documentandpreserveasmuchof itaspossible,somethingthathaspreviously neverbeenattempted.Workswillbecycled inandoutofdisplayastheyarediscovered, added,cataloguedandreturned.InGathering Rust,ceramicsareplacedoneasily-accessible woodenshelving,whilepaintingsarehungon steelmeshrackingnormallyusedforstorage
