What does Valentine’s Day really mean to you? Red roses, cute picnics and dark chocolate? Commercialised nonsense or bitter memories? Maybe it’s a time that makes you think or reflect on what was, what should be or what could be? As each year passes, I seem to have a slightly different take on the day and I guess my expectation has lowered in the romance area… which is okay by me (most of the time) For years, I waited for the flowers. I would run to the door to see how much he loved me this year. Sometimes I would be disappointed if the day had not panned out perfectly. We would book a restaurant and stay out, reconnecting and sharing our dreams. Although there is still a place for this and I love a fine romantic meal, there seems to be more going on now. Many of us are on this road to self discovery that we find ourselves embracing. What about self love? What about sharing these moments everyday in the small things? What about finding a love so deep that you don’t need to be reminded by a billboard? I learnt alot chatting to Lysa Black from Heart Magic and the more we spoke, the more this has become my focus for the year. It’s important to lay down expectations of yourself first, before we expect certain things from other people. So, Happy Valentine’s Day to YOU! You know what? Philippa may even receive her own love letter this year… see page 3.

Lysa Black The Heart Empress I n darkened cinema rooms throughout New Zealand, adults wept. Although the children’s movie Inside Out appealed to the kids, the psychology behind the film touched on childhood memories of the grown and gave permission to relate. Perhaps, the most important message this movie sent to its viewers, is every single one of our emotions are important. If we numb sadness, we also numb joy. From the release of this confronting movie, a new type of life coach rose up the world over. Heart coaches, who focus on you… the five year old. Meet Lysa Black, also known as, ‘The Heart Empress’ and importantly, an empath. An empath is a person with the ability to perceive the mental or emotional state of another individual. The googled description reads, “They are highly sensitive, finely tuned instruments when it comes to emotions. They

feel everything, sometimes to an extreme, and are less apt to intellectualise feelings. Intuition is the filter through which they experience the world.” “I have been able to feel the heart wounds of others my whole life. Being empathic meant that I not only saw the effect of unhealed heart pain in those around me, but I actually felt the emotional pain of others within my own body. I was intuitively taught the principles of self-healing, and found my way out of my own repeating patterns. I know that truth heals; and through my own wounds have connected to my purpose, power, and peace.” People come to Lysa for her guidance. She can see gifts and truths in individuals and when she has the opportunity to remind them of who they really are, they see. “We need to come home to who we really are,” she says, “free ourselves to become the real you.” Lysa explains that we all have these feelings. The film took us on a journey and gave permission to re-call experiences

and actually cry. It is taught, we need to openly experience all our emotions, and that includes sadness, as painful as it may be sometimes. When we stay with the emotion, the resonating effect can produce a healing experience. That is exactly what we see when Sadness comforts Riley’s imaginary friend, Bing Bong, and also when Riley is able to share her sadness with her parents. Lysa’s advanced work is journeying to the past, taking people back to their inner child. Her new book, ’Heart Healing’ is due to be released on kindle this month. Lysa also offers tools such as love letter writing, to fall more in love with yourself again. This Valentine’s Day, take a moment to love yourself and heal the Riley in you. Ovarian Cancer Awareness It’s named the silent killer for a reason.

O

varian Cancer offers vague symptoms very similar to many other sicknesses and tests that can often be inconclusive. Margaret Rasmussen thought it may have been her heart that was causing all the trouble. Little did she know that a trip to the doctor after tummy swelling would uncover stage 3-4 Ovarian Cancer and a speedy appointment for three treatments of chemotherapy, then major surgery (full hysterectomy and de-bulking surgery) and a further three sessions of Chemotherapy from April 2014 to November 2014. Since she was under 65, Margaret Rasmussen was tested for the BRACA gene, the gene that is commonly past down through generations. Fortunately, it came back negative with so many girls in the family line. Struggling to come to terms with mum’s (and grandmas) diagnosis the family was swept with emotions, yet filled with strong hope. The news came out on 17 April 2014, the same day as her

son-in-law’s 40th birthday. Margaret Rasmussen had also received a call from a good friend announcing her own frightening news on the very same day. The hardest times she recalls, was loosing her precious hair and later, being fitted for wigs. “I was sick of finding hair all over the house so I rung my friend to just come and shave it off.” “We both cried and cried afterwards, it was very hard.” A friend had come over and told her that although she was sick, it didn’t mean she had to look sick so Margaret made the choice to get up and apply makeup and look smart everyday. Her focus also remained on health and recovery. She looked into many books and advice on diet and lifestyle and came to her own conclusions regarding the dangers of high sugar consumption. Two years on and the tests are coming back clear for Margaret. She says she wonders at every pain or pull and although the scans look good, it is something she worries about day to day.

Megan Pitchforth, Margaret’s daughter is on a mission. Before her mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, they hadn’t known about it at all. The awareness was limited and she felt that women needed to gain more knowledge in this area and look out for the signs. B for bloating that is persistent and doesn’t come and go E for eating less and feeling fuller A for abdominal pain T for telling your GP February marks Ovarian Cancer Awareness month. With help from the community, Megan plans to highlight the disease and is busy organising sponsorship and fundraising to draw awareness via the ‘Turn Your Toes Teal’ campaign. elcome Readers!

I look forward to bringing you a column packed with useful advice on colour, coordination and charisma. With the Christmas ham and trifle a distant memory, our beaching holidays coming to an end we bid farewell to our jandals and sarongs, moving on to one of my favourite months, February. Don’t get me wrong, I love the sand between my toes, trendy shorts, the fav bikini and of course the maxi dress. However it’s always refreshing to pull on a more sophisticated look again. February is the time to look and feel fantastic, rested and ready. Time to tame the hair from the beach locks into a fresh new cut or a colour

to give lift and vibrancy. With sun kissed skin we have the glow of good health. It’s also a great month to pull together those fashion pieces that we can love to wear in the warmer weather. The strappy heel, beautifully manicured toes, the summer dress or the chic skirt; be bold and throw in a vibrant Bag. For the casual look, overalls are a new go-to. Denim is still a definite winner in any shade. Combine a sleek playsuit with heels and a clutch for nightlife or crisp sneakers and tote for a casual daywear. STYLE TIP: The final touches we make to an outfit can be the defining statement; classy sunglasses, a fitted belt or a bold handbag. - “The more we live inside the square, the smaller the square becomes.” Yearn for more and look beyond your usual attire. Style is easily achievable. Believe in your innerr beauty

t’s all about the unnatural/natural trend this year, bringing us multi-tonal colours using a variation of techniques. These include, balayage, hair strobing (individualised highlighting that is specific to one’s hair colour, face shape and skin tone) and baby-lights, a technique of applying very fine strands of colour throughout the hair, helping to create a multi-dimensional look or boost your colour in a natural way. Creating forms of buttery blondes with platinum hues, bronde (a darker blonde/brown mix) perfect for the blonde wanting to go dark but not too dark, tortoise shell hair (a soft and natural-looking colour created by blending multiple shades such as golden blondes, caramels,

chestnuts and chocolates), ronze (a mixture of copper red & bronze brown) this works well on all complexions but find the best version for you with your colourist and finally eggplant, for those darker haired beauties wanting to add some spice without the commitment of going lighter. For those of you who like to be a little more daring, the rainbow hair trend of 2015 is still around although in quieter, more subtle hues of pastel and opalescent colours. Think lavender, soft pinks, pale blue and mint. Whether it be all over colour or pops of colour peeking through a more natural overall colour. Texture is here, in a big way! Your guide to Stand Tall, being photogenic Beautiful Lady L

ast month we talked about how to get rid of the double chin in photographs, I hope you found it useful and tried it at home. This time I want to talk about a small and simple trick that will make you instantly look taller in your next photo.

SARAHLEE COBB

HEALTH

Models always look so long in magazines, even when they’re sitting down. They have mastered their posture and with the help of high heels they seem taller than they are in real-life. It’s their job to know how to move for the camera, but the rest of us need a little direction sometimes when it comes to posing. Poor posture can make someone look shorter, wider and even less self-confident than they are in real life. It’s easy to correct and can be done quickly if you’re about to be photographed. Good posture can add up to six inches to your height and even slim down the torso in photos. It’s something that most of us tend to forget; often we slump down at the desk and become stuck in a hunched position. You are beautiful and deserve to stand tall and be proud. So when someone brings a camera out, sit up as straight as possible, roll you shoulders back, stretch your neck up and lift your head high. When you do this you will elongate your body, slim down and define the waist. As well as increasing your overall height it shows confidence through an open and welcoming body language. This simple move will make you look surprisingly different, so give it a go. It’s all about lengthening the body and making you look the best you can. Rheumatic fever There are posters everywhere about rheumatic fever and I am worried about my three kids all under 9 years of age. I don’t know anything about it so can you please offer some sensible advice Alice B

f your child has a sore throat it’s a normal reaction to think it will go away on its own. Most sore throats are caused by viruses and need no treatment other than pain relief. But if your child has been infected with the streptococcus bacteria it is vitally important that you get a prompt diagnosis from your doctor and treatment with antibiotics to decrease your child’s risk of developing rheumatic fever. In New Zealand, Maori and Pacific Island children are at greater risk of developing complications from strep throat. Rheumatic fever is an inflammatory disease that may develop after a group A streptococcal infection - usually a sore throat. It mainly affects children aged between 5-14 years. The symptoms of rheumatic fever usually start about one to five weeks after a strep throat infection. If your child’s sore throat is caused by a virus they will usually have other symptoms such as a runny nose and cough. Children with strep throat will often also have: a fever (greater than 38.5 degrees Celsius) swollen tonsils, sometimes with white patches swollen or tender glands in their neck and they may also complain of headache and stomach pain. There is no one test to diagnose rheumatic fever but blood tests are usually performed to assist in making a diagnosis and a throat swab may also be taken to find out if your child tests positive for streptococcus

bacteria. However, during the initial phase of rheumatic fever, the throat culture is often negative but your doctor will probably treat the infection with antibiotics even if this is the case just to be on the safe side. Rheumatic fever can make the joints (elbows and knees) and skin swollen and painful. It is an ‘autoimmune disease’ which means there is a problem with the immune system (the cells and organs that protect the body against illnesses and infections). In the case of rheumatic fever your child’s immune system makes a mistake and attacks your child’s heart instead of the germs from the illness. While the symptoms of rheumatic fever may disappear on their own, the inflammation can cause rheumatic heart disease, where there is scarring of the heart valves. This condition can be serious and, in some cases, life threatening. It is therefore vitally important to get a child’s strep throat checked out promptly and please don’t feel as if you are wasting your doctor’s time in doing so. To restore beneficial intestinal flora after antibiotic use I recommend using a therapeutic probiotic supplement. I like Radiance Kids Probiotic which comes in a strawberry flavoured chewable tablet, available from www.healthpost.co.nz. 5 reasons why laser hair removal could be your best beauty investment CACI WHANGAREI TALKS TO SAVVY READERS

Have you been thinking about laser hair removal but wonder if it’s worth the investment? Laser hair removal, or VPL (Variable Pulsed Light) like we use at Caci, is an effective solution for long lasting results and has multiple advantages over shaving and waxing. At Caci, we’ve been treating people for over 20 years and guarantee results. We understand it’s an investment, so needs to be considered carefully. Read below to find out why it could be the best investment you’ll make to your beauty routine.

It will save you time Did you know that the average women spends 72 days in her lifetime shaving? We can think of better things we’d rather be doing with that time! Laser hair removal provides lasting results, so there’s no need for the constant awkward shower yoga or making regular waxing appointments.

Not to mention, you’ll save money! In the long run, laser hair removal is more cost effective than shaving or waxing. Razors cost as much as $20 each and only last a few months before you need to buy a new one. Or if you’re a regular waxer, your monthly appointments could cost you around $70 (that’s $840 a year!). Our laser hair removal programme allows you to pay for treatments in weekly, monthly or fortnightly instalments to suit your budget and lifestyle. Weekly payments are about $25 (that’s the same as your Friday night wines!), based on a laser hair removal programme for underarms.

You’ll avoid any hairy situations Suddenly realised you’ve forgotten to shave under your arms while you’re about to lift some weights at the gym? Or want to wear that dress without stockings then realise your legs are a bit on the prickly side? With laser hair removal, you can go into all situations with confidence, knowing you’re hair free and there won’t be any hairy moments!

Eliminate and prevent ingrown hairs If you’re prone to ingrown hairs, laser hair removal could be the right option for you. Shaving and waxing can be harsh on the skin, particularly sensitive skins. Here’s to smooth, hair free skin!

Silky skin all year around With laser hair removal, you can enjoy the benefits of smooth, hair free skin all year around. Not just in summer when we tend to spend time on hair removal! So you can whip out that cocktail dress any time of year without having to worry! Plus, unlike waxing where you need to let the hair grow in between treatments, you can still shave in between laser hair removal treatments while waiting for results to kick in, which will usually take effect after 2 or 3 treatments although this does vary. Special Offer: Until 31 March, Caci are offering you the opportunity to treat two areas for the price of one with their laser hair removal programme. If you would like to find out more about laser hair removal, call Caci on 0800 458 458 and book a complimentary consultation to see if it’s right for you.

L

egend has it that it started in the time of the Roman Empire. The modern Valentine’s Day is a time for friends, a time for family and a time for lovers. How did it all begin? The following are some of the origins of the celebration which has evolved into Valentine’s Day as we know it. In ancient Rome, February 14 was a holiday in honour of Juno, Queen of the Gods and the patroness of women and marriage. The following day, February 15, began the ``Feast of Lupercalia’’. The Lupercalia Festival was a chance for Roman children, normally kept strictly separated, to meet. The boys would each choose a girl’s name from a vase. The boy would then partner the girl he had chosen for the duration of the festival. Sometimes the pairing would last an entire year, and often the couple fell in love and married. Under the rule of Claudius II, Rome became involved in many bloody and unpopular military campaigns. Claudius the Cruel, as he was known, had some difficulty raising the armies he needed. He believed that as married men, his soldiers wanted to stay at home with their families rather than going to war, and so to combat this, he forbade his soldiers from marrying or becoming engaged. An Italian bishop, Valentine, defied the Emperor’s decree, and performed clandestine marriage ceremonies. He was eventually arrested, imprisoned and put to death on February 14 in the Year 270 AD. He was later declared a saint. As the influence of Christianity grew in the Roman Empire, Lupercalia was renamed in honour of Saint Valentine, in recognition of his sacrifice for love. The pagan connotations of love and fertility have endured, and remain to this day. In 496 AD, St Valentine’s Day was declared a day of feasting by Pope Gelasius. The first Valentine was thought to be sent by a captured French knight in London, after the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, to his wife at home in France. Women during the 1700s, hoping to dream of their perfect lover, would remove the yolk from a hardboiled egg, fill it with salt and eat it all, shell included. During the 19th century the English would choose the first person they met on February 14 as their Valentine. America was the first country to establish flowers as gifts on Valentine’s Day. The name Cupid comes from the Latin word for desire. The Greeks call this god Eros (E-ross), the god of love. The apple is sacred to Venus, Roman goddess of love. It has long been associated with love divination. In Italy there is an old tradition for single women to awaken before sunrise to keep a look out for any man to pass their window. It was believed that they would marry this man or someone similar, within that year. The old country name for the Daisy is ``measure of love’’ and it is still one of the most popular love tests. Pick off the white petals of the flower one by one while saying alternatively, ``he loves me, he loves me not’’. The last petal will reveal the truth. ENGLISH: ``I love you’’; SPANISH: (Catalan) ``T’estimo molt’’; (or Basque) ``Ni maite zaitut’’; FRENCH: ``Je t’aime’’; GERMAN: ``Ich liebe dich’’; ITALIAN: ``Ti voglio bene’’; JAPANESE: ``Anata wa aishiteru’’.

New era in retinal care

Diabetic Retinopathy (DR)

to be the first in the country to offer AngioPlex OCT Angiography (OCTA). The

introduction of ZEISS AngioPlex ushers in a new era in retinal care. AngioPlex

OCT Angiography allows visualization of both perfused vasculature and vascular abnormalities of the retina without the need of contrast.

Depth–resolved visualization of the retinal vasculature. Powered by Optical Micro Angiography (OMAGc) Algorithms that utilize amplitude and phase OCT signal data to deliver the highest-quality ultra-clear 3D angiography images. We are able to use the OCTA in most cases replacing Fluorescein angiographies.

Comparison between Fluorescein Angiography and AngioPlex

Age related Macula Degeneration (AMD)

AngioPlex images beautifully illustrate the presence of choroidal (sub retina) neovascularization (Formation of new abnormal blood vessels, usually under the retina.)

Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion (BRVO) AngioPlex images clearly delineate the location of the blockage and the areas affected by blood loss at the top of optic nerve head. This new technology enables ophthalmologists to better visualize blood flow in the retina and choroid capillary network and to detect the growth of abnormal blood vessels. OCTA offers a tremendous amount of contrast. In many ways it provides more detail and better resolution than traditional fluorescein angiography.

Angioplex OCT of the Optic Nerve.

Advantages for the patient: • No injections • No problems with yellow tinge to the skin and a bright green/yellow staining of the urine for 24 – 48 hours after the test. • No chance of feeling nauseated during or just after injection of the dye. • No risk of allergic reaction to the fluorescein dye, or risk of anaphylaxis. • No discomfort for patient. • No waiting 20-30 minutes for the series of photo’s to be taken during Fluorescein Angiography. • AngioPlex scan is a fast, 5 seconds per eye. • Can be done at time of consultation. No waiting for an appointment to have fluorescein angiography. • Diagnostic results available immediately.

In the Optic disc it has the ability to visualize the radial peripapillary capillary network near the optic nerve. “That network is so fine and so tightly packed that with a traditional fluorescein angiogram we could never see it. But now with OCTA, we are able to observe the network.” Another advantage of OCTA’s superior contrast is the ability to glean more quantitative data. Whereas fluorescein angiography typically relies on subjective categories to define mild, moderate or severe loss of blood vessels, OCTA has the potential to use automatic computer algorithms to quantify the level of capillary loss. An important benefit of OCTA is that it provides depth-resolved visualization. With standard fluorescein angiography in the absence of excellent stereopsis, you are unable to tell which layer those retinal vascular abnormalities are coming from because the image you see is an amalgam. With OCT angiography, we now have a way to noninvasively, safely, and effectively visualize the earliest pathological changes in some of the most prevalent diseases that cause blindness, this will very likely lead to earlier diagnosis and more effective treatments. We live in exciting times and who knows how far this technology will take us.

Three reasons why every business owner needs to run W

ant to know the secret to running a successful business? It’s not just dominant thought, connections and amazing sales copy. You can mastermind all you like and have the best social media presence in the world, but if you want to stay on top of your A game, you need to look after number one. Running, whether it’s for just 15 minutes a day or marathon training, will give you more benefits than you think. Here are three benefits from running that all entrepreneurs will want to experience and it’s as easy as getting out the door.

Improve your focus

Lacing up your shoes regularly and going out for a run may make the executive functions that happen in the frontal cortex, such as decision-making, planning, organising and juggling mental tasks, easier. In a 2010 Japanese study, people who’d just completed bouts of physical activity scored higher on mental tests than those who did not.

Natural stress relief

When you run you are alone in your thoughts. You can use this to your advantage by either getting your brain

around an issue that has been challenging you, such as your next launch, or by simply zoning out and enjoying your surroundings. In studies, regular runners generally say they live a happier, more stress-free life than their housebound counterparts. Aside from simply being happier because you’re in better shape and feeling good, endorphins released while running play a big role in these results.

Boost that brain

Ever heard of the runner’s high? It is real and has more benefits than you think. When you exercise you reduce insulin resistance, reduce inflammation, and stimulate the release of chemicals in the brain that affect the health of brain cells. These include growing new blood vessels in the brain and helping new brain cells to survive and thrive. Indirectly, exercise improves mood and sleep, and reduces stress and anxiety. Problems in these areas frequently cause or contribute to cognitive impairment. In a study done at the University of British Columbia, researchers found that regular aerobic exercise, the kind that gets your heart and your sweat glands pumping, appears to boost the size of the hippocampus, the brain area involved in

ABOUT TOWN

Bank Street Social Club Review PHILIPPA MANNAGH

How does one sum up their dining experience at Bank Street Social Club? 1.) With a new appreciation for stunning heritage buildings. 2.) Filled to the brim from one of the best dishes I have ever eaten. 3.) Relaxed and very well looked after. Being the month of love and all, hubby and I searched for a restaurant nearby where we could enjoy some adult conversation in a welcoming environment. Bank Street Social Club soon came to mind as a special place to dine out, with the added bonus of private booth seats. The waiter this evening was fault-less. Having spent many years in hospitality ourselves, it is hard to miss the common mistakes that many front of house staff seem to make. He was attentive at the right moments, helpful yet not too pushy and even offered food service on a first name basis from our booking, something I had never experienced here in the North before, top marks! We were promptly presented with our generous sized entrees. The spicy buffalo wings with a blue cheese mousse had been popular that night, so in their place it was suggested we try the prawns with the dish instead. The pairing was beautiful and went down perfectly with an icy cold beer. I ordered the grilled Turkish bread smothered with dukkah and matched with a feta dipping sauce - divine and very filling. There was no way I was going past the Freedom Farms Pork Belly. From what I had heard, it lived up to its expectations accompanied by kumara, apple and vanilla

puree and jus, this was a very rich dish, perfect for the cooler evening. My dining partner decided on the free range chicken breast with chorizo and mushroom risotto. Risotto is a dish that takes a lot of patience and love to get right and it was mastered here at Bank Street Social Club Due to the generous servings and possibly our eyes that were bigger than our stomachs, there was absolutely no room to squeeze in dessert so we sat for a while taking in the romantic atmosphere and enjoying a glass of red wine to wash down the intense flavours of our mains. The building was filled with happy diners, inside and out in the funky garden courtyard and music played peacefully in the background providing an atmosphere of pleasant un-wind. Next time, we will be in for dessert under the stars and a special coffee to top off our evening.

Hi to all those Northlanders who have been enduring these long hot muggy nights… has it been hot or what? …Phew. So I thought I would give you all some tips on how to endure these nights more comfortably. Just a few tips from the beds we sleep in, to the layers that we place on top of ourselves. Last night was a 20 degrees high and muggy and I know there are a lot of you out there who are not having a great night’s sleep. If you are a “hot” sleeper, by that I mean endure those of us who are normally hotter than others and have to endure these sweaty, wet nights you are not alone. All beds have a comfort layer and the one thing a “hot” sleeper needs to stay away from is the thick soft layer of latex and memory foam, as both these product add to the warmth in the bed. Latex , if thick and soft tends to hold your body heat right below your body, making it feel like you are in an oven. But for those who are not “hot” sleepers Latex is extremely healthy and best for those who suffer from asthma and allergies plus has many advantages, just not for those hotter people. Over the past two to three years, the comfort layers manufactured by Sleepyhead have come a long way. The new and improved memory foam layers that are currently available are called, Fusion Gel, Phase Change and Graphene. These all play a part in reducing the heat. Fusion Gel in our Sleepyhead beds, (not all Fusion Gel is the same), has a far quicker reaction time than the older memory foam that came on the market some 8 odd years ago. The advanced gel particles are infused evenly throughout the memory foam and under pressure provides greater support and dissipates the heat, providing superior regulation of our body temperature. It is highly conductive resulting in a cooler sleep. The other layer added to some of our beds is known as “Phase Change” which is also a gel infused visco elastic memory foam which is a rapid thermal conductor which absorbs and /or releases the heat, further helping to maintain your body in a cooler comfort zone. This substance adds to the softness of the bed and last but not least, some of our top range of beds has one more layer called “Graphene” which is super soft but actually conducts heat away from where our bodies lie. Not all these substances are in all beds at the same time, but for those who enjoy a soft feel, but are worried about the heat, this would be the best choice, but are priced at a premium.

As for the layers we place on our beds and over ourselves, i.e. linen, these are some of the tips to keep you cooler. Firstly I know a lot of you out there tend to keep your electric blanket and wool underlays on your beds all year through. This will definitely make you warmer, plus will change the feel of the bed that you bought at the time, making the bed firmer over time. I suggest you take these items off your beds in these hot periods. I would also suggest you get a waterproof mattress protector, to not only protect your investment, but to absorb the perspiration and keep your bed drier. These new mattress protectors are super thin, and can be washed and dried in the dryer if need be, but need to be washed at least every two weeks in order to keep them breathing. They are available with either a towelling feel, bamboo layer and best of all is the Tencel option as this is made of Eucalyptus wood fibre which also conducts heat away from your body. Then comes the sheets, and there are so many options available, but 100% cotton is the ultimate in keeping you cooler. Any sheet which is a blend of polyester is going to up your temperature, no matter how little is added. The new microfiber sheets are extremely hot for this time of year and should only be used in the colder months, as flannelette sheets are. Also remember that even if your sheets are pure cotton, anything higher than about 610 thread count is thicker and hence warmer. Your choice of duvet inner is extremely important. The best is a 200 to 300 gsm pure cotton duvet inner which contains no polyester at all. By that I mean, the inner content of the duvet inner is made only of 100% cotton. This goes for the duvet covers as well. Generally most people do not have many duvet covers and tend to only have one or two options. If this is the case then please opt for the 100% cotton and for those who, like myself, do not like ironing our covers, the best choice would be a Egyptian cotton sateen one, which at most times does not need any ironing if hung on the washing line correctly. And let’s not forget our choice in pillows, as a good pillow supports at least 20% of our bodies, so not only is it important to find the right comfort and support, we also need to choose ones that do not hold the heat from our heads, making us even hotter. We at BedsRus are able to guide you on this. Last but not least, the choice of nightwear is important….so keep it light. Bear in mind that coffee and tea and too much red wine is going to up your temperature, so moderation is called for. And for those who suffer from “Short tropical vacations at night”, sorry, but we are going to have to grin and bear it…. sadly. I do hope these few tips will help in getting you that perfect sleep and remember advice is always free at BedsRUs, so if you have a question or a concern, please do not hesitate to call us on 0800141640 or 09 438 3550, seven days a week. I also recommend you take a look at the bedsrus.co.nz website and we promise to do our best in matching you and your family to the perfect sleep… Till next time.

Be playful with 50 shades of grey While the thought of painting your property’s interior spaces grey might seem bleak, things are not so black and white. There’s an impressive selection of grey hues to choose from, so you’re sure to find a paint colour for every room. Use the free Resene Find-AColour tool (www.resene.co.nz/findacolour) to pick the perfect grey.

Play with textures Once you’ve found the ideal grey hue for your selected room, you’ll need to think about textures. An oversize mirror with a rustic-looking

Resene Masala

I

t’s easy to dismiss grey - it’s a colour reminiscent of dull skies, rain and sleet. However, there’s so much more to grey than negative connotations. In fact, playing up various shades of this seemingly bland colour can actually work wonders in your home. If you’re contemplating home decorating ideas, it might pay to pare things back and keep it simple. Grey, in its various hues, can lend a welcome sophistication to living spaces, bedrooms and bathrooms. Grey will match an array of furniture designs, rug patterns and accessories. This means with some simple touch-ups, you can completely reinvigorate your home without having to overhaul the entirety of your interior.

Start with the walls It goes without saying that you can make dramatic changes to your home by painting the walls. In the bedroom, consider a hue like Resene Rakaia. This shale grey is the perfect pick for bedroom’s - it’s got a cool aesthetic that will look fantastic with pops of colour. Add vibrancy to the space with bed linen, throws and coffee tables in shades like azure and canary. In the living room, try Resene Double Stack. It’s a deeper grey that looks stunning with offwhite crown moulding and polished timber or concrete flooring. Or pair it with thick-pile tan carpet for a contemporary, chic aesthetic. The stormy grey that is Resene Half Tuna has blue undertones that makes it the perfect pick for a roomy bathroom. In small bathrooms, go for a shade like Resene Delta, an ochre-hued grey that’s got a welcome warmth to it.

wooden frame, plush cushion covers, thick, tan curtains and a glass-topped coffee table can work together if you’ve got grey walls. Rather than making a brave statement by painting your walls red or yellow, you can make a more subtle impact by embracing various textures. In the bathroom, pair matte floor tiles with glossy shower tiles. In the bedroom, embroidered linen, a silk bed headboard, patterned ceiling-to-floor curtains and a mohair throw will add complexity to the space without being too dramatic. Such items can be varying shades of grey to match your walls, or you can throw a curve ball and embrace white, maroon, navy and moss.

Let the light in There are different temperatures of paint, from buttery-warm shades to extremely clinical, cool hues. No matter which paint you choose, it’s important to let plenty of light in when you embrace grey in your home. Think about installing skylights in your living space or bathroom or investigating the feasibility of sliding glass doors in your living room. Freestanding lamps add personality to living rooms and bedrooms and can add muchneeded light. A lamp with a polished stand with reflect other light sources off it, while a cream lampshade lends a touch of class. You need to focus on more than the structure - be sure to pick a bulb that’s got a rich, yellow glow. This will ensure your living space retains a sense of warm. Halogen lights are a good option in the kitchen, particularly around your kitchen splashback and preparation area. Bright colours such as yellow and pink add a lightness - use them sparingly to contrast against the grey, such as in vases and side tables.

ANNEMARIE FLORIAN Annemarie Florian Is An Author, Librarian And Bookseller For Storytime, storytime.co.nz

Wellbeing Economics : Future Directions for New Zealand, by Paul Dalziel and Caroline Saunders, Bridget Williams Books, $14.95

One title in the BWB Texts series – little books on big subjects – that attempt to succinctly analyse topics of current interest. Wellbeing Economics explores the concept of ‘value-added growth’, from personal to national growth, and calls for New Zealand’s transformation from the traditional ‘welfare state’ to a progressive ‘wellbeing state’. It ably argues that instead of measuring economic growth for its own sake, we should be assessing how well our nation’s growth enables us to lead the kinds of lives we most value. Other titles in the series include: Generation Rent; Growing Apart (Regional Prosperity); The Child Poverty Debate; The Edge of Life (Human Health); The Inequality Debate; The Quiet War on Asylum; Time of Useful Consciousness (Climate Change) and more…

First to the Top : Sir Edmund Hillary’s Amazing Everest Adventure, by David Hill and Phoebe Morris, Puffin Books, $24.95 A brief and endearingly illustrated biography of Sir Edmund Hillary, particularly suitable for primaryage readers. The overall design is detailed and engaging, using text size and placement to great advantage. As New Zealanders, we hold Sir Ed dear in our hearts and writer David Hill has done an excellent job of ensuring Sir Ed’s easygoing character shines through, while at the same time showing his amazing accomplishments. The story is suspenseful, the man, awe-inspiring. This book honours both.

Complete Flags of the World : The Ultimate Pocket Guide, Dorling Kindersley, $29.95 This is the ultimate book on flags, covering over 400 flags and flag history and explaining the widespread use and significance of flags and flag design. Each national flag is covered with detailed notes and annotations about the history, design development and the significance of colours, symbols, crests and coats of arms. Perhaps a useful book to fuel the national flag debate we haven’t yet had.

In the Bush : Explore and Discover New Zealand’s Native Forests, by Ned Barraud and Gillian Candler, Potton & Burton, $29.95HB, $19.95pap Here in Northland we’re lucky to have easy access to extensive areas of native bush. This book, the fourth in the wonderful Explore & Discover series, encourages us to get out there, to enjoy and appreciate it. The first pages plunge the reader into a compelling experience of the bush, calling on us to immerse ourselves further. And further reading doesn’t disappoint, revealing a mix of fascinating fact and story, supported by detailed and appealing illustrations. The bonus is the waterproof bird identification card included at the back, which can be easily slipped into a daypack. Aimed for the younger reader, but able to be enjoyed by all.

Maori Art : History,Architecture, Landscape and Theory, by Rangihiroa Panoho, Bateman $89.95 If the purpose of art is to reveal things that our day-to-day busy-ness cannot; to mirror society, showing it for what it really is, then that has been achieved here within this historical and social commentary. Maori Art is a hugely revealing work, exploring the connections between traditional carving, painting and weaving, as well as a wide range of contemporary art works. If the purpose of art is to influence the way we think about things, to tell stories and communicate emotions, then that has been achieved here by showing the many layers and narratives of Maori art in a myriad of forms. If the purpose of art is to create change, to enlarge our appreciation of our surroundings by eliciting feelings of awe, inspiration and being uplifted, then Rangihiroa Panoho has achieved it here. This book is itself a scholarly work of art, a thought-provoking thing of beauty that aims to enrich us.

Te Wairua O Waitangi, by Deborah Hinde, Sharon Holt and Stacy Walker, The Writing Bug, $24.95 What does the Treaty of Waitangi actually mean to us? This book suggests that under the Treaty, the people of Aotearoa at the time agreed to all take part in caring for the people and resources of this land. Aimed for preschool and primary use, it uses a mix of distinctive photos, song, repetition and rhyme to explore that agreement and our joint responsibilities as part of that. As with all Holt’s titles, the intention is to help make learning Maori easy and enjoyable. With a singalong CD, background information and follow-up ideas, the whole package is a fresh and extremely functional resource.

PHILIPPA MANNAGH

A

s Valentine’s Day approaches, I wonder where the years went that hubby and I managed to wine and dine on a regular occurence. We would sleep in until 9:00am and leisurely

leave the clean house for a brisk walk around the block. After a long shower upon return we would often sit outside and chat, uninterrupted over a hot coffee. “What shall we do today?” we would often ask and the options were endless. Flowers would arrive on February the 14th, here at the office and we would luncheon somewhere nice and throw around sickly compliments of how amazing the other was and how in love we were. For some reason, these days, it takes a tad more effort. Our romantic room is a constant mess surrounded with piles of unfolded laundry and half eaten toddler crackers. Hubby is in a fluster not being able to find anything before work. Rice bubbles cover the kitchen floor and milk splashes decorate the bench top. Dogs, cats and children demand to be fed first and the arguments start over clothes and brushing their teeth. Kiddy proofing, tumbles, moaning, early tantrums, sorting, cleaning, washing, spills, screams, running away and laughing. There is nothing like a toddler to keep you on your toes! At this time of the morning, my hair sits in a lovely shape of afro and often i’m struggling to find my pants (Que. The Lego Movie) We look into each others tired, stressed out eyes and search for the spark we desperately know is still there behind the insomniac chaos.

It’s there… Love just forms a new picture for us now, like the shared amazement of what we created together (a giant baby checking out my credit cards). Often, gone are the days of butterflies and sparkles (and let’s be honest, couple freedom) but what is there is deep. We have lived life together, grown up, weathered storms together, been through our darkest moments as a team and come out the other side. Although the same focus may not be there like it used to be on the day of love, we look around at what we have… a family unit of crazy! There is more to Valentine’s Day than a romantic poem to your partner. I believe it runs deeper. Embrace your family, your friends and the love for yourself too. If we get to share a hot cup of tea together and a sparkly moment of deep eye connection, I will be a happy woman. Pip x LIKED MEDIA www.likedmedia.co.nz

And wouldn’t it be great we had a leader who could just happily admit he was ‘a dodgy bastard’, a thief and a crook? The future for our glorious nation is bright with Chopper as your leader, that’s why he’s wearing sunglasses. After dominating the airwaves in 2015, Chopper’s back on stage, and in stabbing distance, armed with a brand new hour of comedy as tours Anzakistan; visiting Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Nelson, Whangarei and Tauranga.

Valentine’s Day 5 Cars That Say

‘I Love You’ V

alentine’s Day is accused of being consumer-driven and an opportunity for retailers to profit from all the hype and glamour generated by the ‘L’ word. But Valentine’s Day began over 1500 years ago as a feast day for third-century Saint Valentine of Rome, the patron saint of love. Young people and happily marrieds/in relationships just took the ball and ran with it. Traditionally, Valentine’s Day gifts have been limited to sweets, flowers and red heart and rose covered cards. But what if you’re feeling especially generous this year? What if you want to profess your undying love in a way that your better half will never forget? What if you really want to make the rest of us look like a bunch of schlubs? Well, you could get your beloved a CAR!!! But which one? We thought you’d never ask. Here are five that say “I love you” in all the right ways:

VOLKSWAGEN GOLF GTI

F

ew cars work as well as the 2016 Volkswagen Golf GTi for everyday driving and then perform so phenomenally when a sporting mood strikes. It’s like getting two cars in one and that’s why the GTi is a top pick for a performance-oriented hatchback. The 2016 Golf GTI gets a major upgrade in cabin technology. An all-new infotainment system provides a standard 6.5-inch touchscreen interface, rear-view camera, universal USB input and, for compatible phones, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration. VW has also added new features to the optional Driver Assistance package, including adaptive cruise control, an emergency brake assist feature, lane departure warnings, blind spot monitoring and automated parallel parking. Standard safety features include antilock disc brakes, automatic hill-hold, stability and traction control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and a driver knee airbag. You’ll never really outgrow a car like the Golf GTi with its strong and fuel-efficient turbocharged engine; sporty handling, versatility and roomy design with a high-quality interior.

KIA CERATO

D

esigned to inspire. You should never judge a book by its cover but it’s hard not to when you’re looking at the Kia Cerato, because it’s a head turner from almost any angle. An ergonomically designed driver space gives you easy and precise fingertip control, together with class-leading comfort. The Cerato is a car designed to deliver the ultimate driver experience. Whether you choose the sedan or hatch, expect the unexpected. The hatchback is sleek and sexy and it’ll make your loved one feel the same. The Cerato also brings sizzle to the sedan segment and is the perfect gift for someone who’s both practical and stylish. It says “I can bring home the bacon, fry it up in a pan, transport the kids to karate class and pick up ‘Coco’ from doggie day care without breaking a sweat.” Giving one to your special someone says, “Let’s do a long road trip and leave the kids and Coco at home.”

JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE

T

he Jeep Grand Cherokee is a nearperfect SUV, able to handle errands, is relaxing to drive for commuting and life’s other minutiae five days of the week, then go off-road and wallow in the mud on the weekends. The cabin is well-trimmed and comfy for five plus there’s plenty of muscle for towing. Jeep offers a few different four-wheel-drive systems to choose from and there’s even an optional off-road package that features an adjustable air suspension that allows you to change the ride height. Giving a Grand Cherokee is like saying “Babe I’m giving this to you but let’s share the excitement!!”

here are many really good small cars on the market today, but Mazda has really taken the others on with the new Mazda 2. It’s hard to beat in almost every department. The wise say that good things come in small packages and the latest Mazda 2 proves them right. It’s sassy and clever. Buyers now demand just as much from a small car as they once did from a larger, luxury model. Mazda have produced a little car that feels, drives, handles and performs like a big one. And what’s more, it’s as refined and quiet as many cars with two or three times the price tag. It’s also the most affordable ride on this list. The Mazda 2 says “Baby, you’ll love my moves.”

G

ot someone who’s hard to shop for? Try buying a MX-5 Convertible! It’s the perfect gift for someone who tells you, “No, I don’t want anything for Valentine’s Day”, but secretly expects something really, really good. The 2016 model is best when the road turns twisty. It zips around corners with an enthusiasm few other cars can match while the efficient fourcylinder engine makes enough power and sound to keep the good times rolling. The latest MX-5 boasts a modernised equipment roster including an available infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen plus an unprecedented selection of creature comforts and safety technologies. Giving a MX-5 says, “Here’s a token of my undying affection -- and look! We still have money in the retirement account.”
