Editor’s Note
I
n this issue, we talk to three couples who have experienced love in different ways. From meeting by chance in the Middle East to an online serendipitous tale through to a landlord turned lover. A good love story interests me because there isn’t one magic recipe for making it work, nor how it plays out. Personalities, history, circumstances all fulfil their role and even the quiet times in life can be used to strengthen bonds instead of breaking away. At times it takes extraordinary commitment and strength, patience and a good sense of humour these days as many couples feel the pressure to give up and move on. As a teenage sweetheart myself, I know all about the first cartoon heart eyes through to sticking it out and keeping to kind words. But it’s worth it, and as life changes, we change and how cool is it if we can be adapting to life with someone we love by our side? I think it’s pretty special indeed. Read more inside.

OUR PEOPLE
stories Kate and Nip (John) McGrath How long have you been together? Coming up to 13 years (we’ve just marked eight years of marriage) How did you first meet? We met in Amman, Jordan on the day Saddam Hussein that was captured – history making day. We were both joining a tour of Jordan and Egypt to fulfil lifelong dreams of seeing the Pyramids. Nip had come through from London where he was living at the time via Syria, Lebanon etc and I had come from Sydney where I was based. We were both there with our “other halves” at the time!! Was it love at first sight? Yep. Absolutely. There was a spark that happened immediately. I can’t really explain it, but I think the most accurate description is that of two souls recognizing their mates immediately and then the people attached to them trying to work that out. What is your key to a happy relationship? Truth and openness. As I said before, we had significant others when we met, so it was imperative that we were open an real about our feelings, doubts, guilt and be willing to understand and listen to each other, even if we didn’t particularly like what we were hearing. So as tough as it was sometimes, it set us in really good stead for some of the challenges huge and small we have been through together since. And lets be honest, staying physically attractive to each other plays an important role! Tell us about your first kiss: There was a peck on the lips on a rooftop in Cairo, but our first proper kiss was a gratuitous public display of affection at the airport in Sydney after about a month and a half since we’d admitted our feelings for each other while on opposite sites of the world. What would your dream Valentine’s Day look like? As the parents of 3 gorgeous and busy kids, anything that included being able to sleep past 7:30 and hold hands whilst doing what we wanted in our own time would be positively dreamy!! How will you be celebrating Valentine’s Day? Well, given it is a Tuesday this year, I’d say it will be a bit like every other Valentines day for the past 7 years and will include a romantic dinner shared with three kids, followed by dishes, putting the kids to bed and then maybe we’ll have a glass of wine and a beer.

I knew Brian through friends (I had actually first met him very briefly before the flatting scenario) He had brought his first home and wanted a flatmate, preferably a female as he didn’t want it to be a lad pad. Lucky for me and him really, I arrived to look around and walked past him at the front gate (he was talking to a real estate agent I think) he had said to go on in. I remember thinking mmmmmmm and apparently he was thinking the same, but of course he was a perfect gentleman!
What is your key to a happy relationship? A friend once told us it was the 3 C’s: Communication Communication Communication Yip – he’s right, that and being best friends. Lingerie is one of the hottest looks on the catwalk BY STACEY SPEEDY
H
ere we are in the month of love and what better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than with sensuous lingerie? On a recent conference in Melbourne I was intrigued to hear that Lingerie is one of the hottest looks on the catwalk. It is so on trend to have delicate lace or sexy satin showing through your fashion trends. Whether it be worn under or over your garments for the ultimate peek a boo effect, this is a luxurious fashion statement. When selecting, lingerie be sure to think whether you want practical or pretty? What your days consist of, whether it be foundation pieces in neutrals for every day or a little bit naughty for a touch of spice in your life. Remember for every bra, it’s ideal to have at least 2 pairs of matching briefs, this ensures ultimate usage of your favourite bra. Also in every girl’s lingerie wardrobe, be sure to have a nude set of bra and brief, although these may not be the most dazzling colour however it’s ideal to wear under white if you prefer no colour to show. There is so much on offer from the sporty look to a more laced appeal for special occasions, however my rule in lingerie is it should not be saved for a special occasion. Wear it for yourself, to make you feel special, you are Truly You and you are a special occasion worth celebrating. In the fashion world, those familiar words ring true… without foundation there can be no fashion. What is a great base for the ultimate outfit to be created? Simply luxurious lingerie. So, ladies let the men in your lives spoil you this Valentines with a gift that is sure to please everyone.

Want to look slimmer? Here are 11 fashion style tips to make you look slimmer.
O T K C ‘BA K’ WOR
tials n e s s E e Wardrob
BY KAREN MATICH, POLWARTH DESIGN
W
e all have to deal with the extra Christmas padding just seemed to sneak up on us. I thought I’d share styling tips to help us look slimmer until we start eating healthily … At some point. In the not-too-distant-but-can’t-yet-be-confirmed future.
1. The half-tuck This is nothing more than an optical illusion but gee, it works. Tuck one part of the front of your t-shirt/ shirt into jeans, casually, as though it’s an afterthought. Something to do with just the centre of your jeans showing creates a flattering depth perception that makes you look slimmer. Job done.
2.A high-waisted wide swing skirt Worn with a cropped sweater or a top tucked in, a long skirt like this creates an hourglass shape that gives all the right curves.
3.Wear a blazer Pop on a blazer that comes to the hip to streamline your look and draw the eye vertically. Oh the power of a magic fashion trick!
4. Beef up your shoulders Wearing an oversized jacket on the top half of your body, then teaming it with skinny jeans will make legs look teeny weeny.
block heel, this year you can welcome comfort while revelling in extra height to lengthen legs.
8. Monochrome Wearing the same colour top and bottom makes the eye think you’re like one, long delicious piece of goodness.
9. Swap wedges for a skinny heel. On the wrong outfit, wedge shoes can make legs look dumpy. Wear them with minis and maxis, but nothing in between. With all other lengths, a skinny heel will slim out the body.
10.Wear light-coloured shoes I’m not talking the boring “Kate Middleton nude” heel, but a light-coloured neutral like snakeskin, gold or interesting nude (rather than blah-beige) will lengthen and therefore slim out your legs.
11.Wear a loose sweater as a top A loose-ish, lightweight sweater balances out skinny jeans or a skirt. Sweaters are the new tops, didncha know? Especially because you can double dip Tim Tams into your afternoon cuppa and nobody will notice when you develop a bloated paunch for your 4pm meeting. It’s the little things.
Christmas holidays are a fading memory and for all the working girls it's time to get back into 9-to-5 style in a way that's easy and inspired. Shop at Polwarth Design for those cool tops and skirts by SIREN. Keep the summer feeling alive without splashing the cash on a whole new wardrobe!
5.A knee-length pencil skirt Swap your mini for a longer skirt that hugs legs to the knee or just above. Make it casual by pairing with a tee and trainers, or team with heels to really elongate the leg. Bonus points if it’s in a print which miraculously helps hide lumps and bumps.
6.A tailored t-shirt When Jennifer Aniston told the world a couple of years back that she got her t-shirts tailored to fit better, I thought it was a case of too much money + too much time = mad. But having bought a tailored t-shirt this summer, in a slightly stiff fabric, I can see where she’s coming from. It won’t sink into belly rolls and sits nicely just on the outside of your body, creating a slim silhouette.
7. The quasi-flat shoe A hidden inch on a pair of “flats” or a shoe that’s almost flat but not quite makes a huge difference. So whether it’s a platform espadrille or a bang on trend, low

Fashion tips for busy Mums BY BERNADETTE NORMAN

Try these quick tips for caring for those fabrics that you might have thought were too high maintenance for your busy lifestyle. We all love linen in summer, but most of us are scared of all the creasing and ironing. The best way to keep your linen looking great, relaxed and effortless is to pop it in a cool tumble dryer immediately after washing, and as soon as it’s dry hang it up and it will look soft and be ready to wear with out a crease in sight. Line drying and ironing only make linen crispy and more prone to creasing. Likewise with sheer silk fabrics like chiffon or georgette, after hand washing pop it on a hanger to drip dry and you won’t have to iron it at all. If you are worried about wrinkles pop it in the bathroom when you take a shower and the steam will cause any wrinkles to drop out The Hero piece outfit makes getting dressed in the morning stress free. We
all love layering and creating interesting outfits but this takes time and thought that we don’t always have as busy mums. One of my secrets for always looking well put together with a minimum of fuss is the “hero piece outfit”. Make sure you have a selection of basic short and long cami or tank tops, and skinny pants or leggings ( whatever works for your figure type and do try to match them colour wise) and all you need is a great top, tunic or over shirt and you have your outfit. p.s. the current trend for dresses is the ultimate hero piece outfit and its made for busy mums as it takes all the stress our of putting an outfit together, jersey dresses are especially fab as they don’t need to be ironed , wont crease and are so comfortable .

Make one garment multi task through your day as you do.
We all have those days that require us to be in lots of different places but without the luxury of time to change outfits to suit the varied occasions. A wardrobe of pieces that can be dressed up and dressed down as the day requires is a great for a busy lifestyle. For example a beautiful white linen shirt or a printed silk Kaftan can be thrown over your swimsuit at the beach with the kids and then be dressed up at night with slim pants and a pair of wedges for a night out.
Use accessories to transform your look in an instant. How many
times have we thrown something on, just to drop the kids to school on time and ended up feeling a bit shabby. Keep your accessories like necklaces, scarves and belts on hooks in your wardrobe or dressing room where you can easily see and access them and you’ll always be able to find that piece that will take your look from thrown together to thoughtfully accessorized.
5
A little planning ahead the night before will make the morning run
without a hitch. If you’re always running against the clock in the morning, and what busy mum isn’t, then plan your outfit the night before. That way you can enjoy your morning shower without stressing over what you’re going to wear and there will be no last minute wardrobe meltdowns because you have run out of time between feeding the baby or making the school lunches.
BEAUTY
Tips to help your skin glow A
fake tan sounds simple enough, but there are some key suggestions that you may want to keep in mind before you book your next beauty session. Waxing or shaving needs to be done 24hrs prior to treatment. The evening before, exfoliate your entire body with either a scrub or exfoliating gloves. No deodorants, moisturisers, perfume or oils on the day of the tan as these can act as a barrier and react to the tan. Wear loose dark clothing on the day of the tan. Shower using a non-abrasive loofah or body wash, a face cloth is ďŹ ne. After showering use your towel to pat-dry the skin, rather than rubbing. Moisturise daily to prolong the life of the tan. IMPORTANT: Do not exercise on the day of your tanning application. Excessive perspiration will adversely affect the development of your tan. If you are a regular tanner keep this in mind, your spray tan may not turn out the exact same every week due to many different reasons, hormones, pH levels, dehydration, skin conditions, body temperature, pregnancy, menstrual cycle, stress levels - these can all have an affect. So make sure when you book your tan that you give yourself time to prepare your skin. Exfoliate, wax or shave the day before your tan, keep hydrated, eat well and moisturise in the days leading up to your appointment for your tan for best results. Happy tanning! By Keri Rodgers,

Skin resolutions and solutions for 2017
Fresh, healthy skin is always in; and often tops our beauty wish lists. Now’s the perfect time to take control of your skin, treat your concerns, and achieve the complexion you’ve always wanted. RESOLUTION: I WANT TO IMPROVE PIGMENTATION AND SUN DAMAGE Solution: Photo Rejuvenation The summer sun is damaging, and can cause pigmentation, sun spots and redness. Photo Rejuvenation uses Variable Pulsed Light (VPL) to safely pulse light beams through the skin surface, targeting skin pigmentation, and minor surface blood vessels. The result? Improved skin texture and tone, for a fresher and healthier appearance. Photo Rejuvenation can treat: • Pigmentation, age and sun spots • Redness • Broken capillaries and red veins
RESOLUTION: I WANT SMOOTHER SKIN,AND IMPROVE SCARRING Solution: Collagen Induction Uneven skin texture can really affect skin confidence, and is commonly caused by acne. Collagen Induction treatments (also known as dermal rolling/needling) can help improve the appearance of scarring, for smoother skin texture. Using a roller consisting of fine needles, it causes controlled damage to the skin resulting in an increase in collagen production - resulting in firmer, smoother skin. Collagen Induction can treat: • Facial scarring • Improve skin texture • Increase skin elasticity and plumpness
RESOLUTION: I WANT YOUNGER LOOKING SKIN Solution: Fractional CO2 Laser The most advanced anti-ageing treatment; the treatment passes light into the deeper
layers of the skin damaging the cells below and triggering the skin’s natural healing process. This controlled damage is used to train the cells to grow back stronger, firmer, and faster. As a result, skin becomes smoother, firmer and more even in colour. Fractional CO2 Laser can treat • Fine lines and wrinkles • Uneven skin tone and texture • Pigmentation

SUCCESSFUL ALL ROUND hen Antony Swinney and Warunee Boonlong’s paths crossed in Whangarei in September last year who would’ve thought it would lead to a thriving business bringing therapy and relaxation to the people of Tikipunga and beyond?
clientele has ranged from local workers from surrounding shops at the Plaza, out-of-town holiday-makers, who have returned to purchase vouchers for family members, both local elderly and fitness fanatics and Tutukaka and coastal residents.
Warunee, a Thai native, and with 20 year’s experience in the spa hospitality industry, including management, came to New Zealand on a working visa to fulfil a dream.
“Massage is important because it relieves the tension from, not only the body physically, but the soul and mind,” explains Warunee. “Sometimes the customers walk through the doors and don’t know what type of treatment they want. But I can feel where they are carrying the tension. Sometimes they really want to talk. It’s a place to come in and forget about it.”
“I’ve been to lots of countries but it’s one of the top ten countries in the world and the country of my dream,” she says. Enter Antony, who was back in town, where he returns once a month from his construction work in Australia, and the two formed a partnership from which the seed of an idea grew. “I’ve lived in Tikipunga 30 years but have travelled extensively for work. I’ve been wanting to return home to live and Warunee wanted me to take life easier.” “I’ve watched this end of town expand over the years but it doesn’t really have anything like this.” He is talking about their new business Paramount Thai Massage, the doors of which opened in January, and delivers a range of therapeutic relief to its customers. The three massage therapists each bring their own cultural experiences, including Thai, Swedish and Balinese Massages and Indian Head Massage. Whether it’s a relaxing
oil massage or healing massage, the range includes hot stone, deep tissue and back, neck and shoulders or foot massages, reflexology and aromatherapy relaxation to name a few. A popular treatment is the Coco Fusion – Paramount’s Signature Massage, which combines Thai, Balinese and European techniques.
Paramount Thai Massage is based at shop 21, Paramount Plaza and opening hours are 9am-7pm Mon-Sat. Online booking is available. More information is at: www.paramountthaimassage.co.nz
The range of refreshing, aromatic oils to choose from can help with sleep quality, tissue repair, stimulation, energy and pain alleviation. “We wanted something that looked professional. I noticed this shop was vacant so we designed and built everything ourselves, or used local people where called for, there’s parking out the front and lots of foot traffic.” And so far it’s proven a success. VALENTINES
7 tips for attracting true love in 2017

WITH LYSA BLACK
1 2
Start looking in your current pool of friends: Spend time with people you already know; fresh eyes can reveal new possibilities. Ask trusted friends for referrals, it can help to ease you into meeting new people.
Up-date your profile with current honest pictures that show your smile: Getting fresh pictures of how you look now; displaying your current hair colour, current weight and current personal style helps to build trust and continuity when you potentially first meet.
3 4
Set an intention to make new friends:
6
To add a new sense of lightness and fun to your dating experiences - seek friendship first. Without needing to ‘find a romantic partner’ you are both more likely to drop your defences and really get to know each other first.
Find out what lights them up: The best way to see who someone really is comes more easily when you ask what lights them up? When people share their passions, dreams and goals we can really start to see who they actually are.
e g l u d Ithenone
7
Don’t pre-judge: It’s natural to make assumptions based on someones appearance, but setting these prejudgements aside opens up space for you to find out about another human being in a way that you may not have realised was possible.
Tell them the truth: The fastest way to gauge the potential in any connection is to allow yourself to be clear about who you are and what you think.
Be interested in what they are interested in: It’s natural to want to find a common interest when meeting someone new. But allowing people to share and teach you about something you have less knowledge or experience with can make dating a chance to learn and expand your perception.

Sonnet 116 BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE Let me not to the marriage of true minds Admit impediments. Love is not love Which alters when it alteration finds, Or bends with the remover to remove: O no! it is an ever-fixed mark That looks on tempests and is never shaken; It is the star to every wand’ring bark, Whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken. Love’s not Times’s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks Within his bending sickle’s compass come; Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks, But bears it out even to the edge of doom: If this be error and upon me proved, I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

Create a Love Affair with Exercise BY CORINNE AUSTIN
W
hen we fall in love with someone we fall in love with every aspect about them. We look forward to seeing them, we look forward to being in their company, and we look forward to spending our time with them. It should be no different with exercise. We all know what it feels like to do something we don’t really want to do. It makes time drag, it drains our energy, and it can make us downright grumpy. And that’s not a cool way to live – and it’s certainly not good for our health or our state of mind. Unfortunately, exercise can be like this for many people.
But this is something that needs to change. Pronto. Exercise isn’t just about pumping iron, striding the pavements, or training insane at bootcamps and crossfit. Many people live, love and thrive upon these fitness modalities; but for others it’s worse than eating a dry weetbix. For many these images do nothing for motivation levels. They don’t sell fitness any better than a noisy, American-ised, cheesy, and unrealistic infomercial about the newest fitness gadget. The great news is is that we can all have a love affair with exercise – every one of us. We can all grow to love the feeling of our body moving in space, the way it was meant to. We can get to a place where we look forward to and crave our daily movement, and where we don’t resent spending our time doing it. There is always room to enhance our relationships with anyone and anything – and exercise is just another one of those. If we want to make something – anything - a habit then it needs to be something that makes us happy and makes us feel good. Period. If we want to let fitness or exercise be something we WANT to do, then it needs to make us feel happy, liberated, powerful and be empowered. There is an innumerable

array of movement, physical activity and exercise options available to us. There is something to suit everybody, everywhere, at any time. So let’s choose wisely. And let’s be mindful of choosing wisely – not just choosing to do something because somebody said we should, but instead choosing to do something because it makes us feel good AND it makes us happy. We’ve each been given the privilege of having unlimited access to so many remarkable wonders, so many undiscovered destinations, and so many healthful opportunities – possibly more than we dare to realise. And although exercise is not essential, movement is. So we must use these things – to explore, to adventure, and to dare. We needn’t always have the goal of necessarily challenging ourselves, but just willing ourselves to get out and just move, plain and simple, the way we used to – or at least the way our parents and grandparents used to. Allowing our bodies to experience their innate need of regular, healthful, life-giving movement in all planes of motion, and in an assortment of differing environments is the very least we can offer it. But, with every choice you make to move, be mindful of it being something that makes you happy, gifts you with greater energy, uplifts you, inspires you, builds you, and gives you the desire to do it time and time again. Movement and exercise should be enjoyable, always. With such an abundance of movement opportunities available to us we’d be insane to repeat things that don’t bring us joy and fulfilment. Embrace activities that put a smile on your dial and that turn your frown upside down. Choose HAPPY movement and have a love affair with exercise.

Iritis
Iritis (i-RYE-tis) is inflammation that affects the coloured ring around your eye’s pupil (iris). The iris is a part of the middle layer of the eye (uvea), so iritis is a type of uveitis, also known as anterior uveitis. include blood tests or X-rays to identify or rule out specific causes
Causes of iritis include:
I
ritis, the most common type of uveitis, affects the front of your eye. The cause is often unknown. It can result from an underlying systemic condition or genetic factor. Iritis attacks the eye quickly and in most cases, occurs in one eye at a time. There are two forms of irtis, acute and chronic. Acute iritis if treated immediately will improve and heal quickly. Chronic iritis doesn’t respond as well to medication and can take months or years to heal. Chronic iritis can also cause serious visual impairment if not treated, iritis could lead to glaucoma or vision loss. If you have symptoms of iritis, see your doctor as soon as possible
Symptoms It usually develops suddenly, and can last six to eight weeks. Signs and symptoms of iritis include: • Eye redness • Discomfort or achiness in the affected eye • Sensitivity to light (photophobia) • Decreased vision Iritis that develops suddenly, over hours or days, is known as acute iritis. Symptoms that develop gradually or last longer than six weeks indicate chronic iritis. Your eye doctor will conduct a complete eye exam, including: • External eye examination. • Visual acuity. • Slit-lamp examination. Dilating your pupil with eye drops enables your doctor to see the inside of your eye better. Your eye doctor may work with your GP to pinpoint an underlying cause. In that case, further testing might
• Injury to the eye. Blunt force trauma, a penetrating injury, or a burn from a chemical or fire. • Infections. Shingles (herpes zoster) on your face. Other infectious diseases, such as toxoplasmosis, histoplasmosis, tuberculosis and syphilis, can be linked to other types of uveitis. • Genetic predisposition. People who develop certain autoimmune diseases because of a gene alteration that affects their immune systems might also develop acute iritis. Diseases include ankylosing spondylitis, Reiter’s syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease and psoriatic arthritis. • Behcet’s disease. An uncommon cause of acute iritis in Western countries, this condition is also characterized by joint problems, mouth sores and genital sores. • Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Chronic iritis can develop in children with this condition. • Sarcoidosis. This autoimmune disease involves the growth of collections of inflammatory cells (granulomas) in areas of your body, including your eyes. • Certain medications. Some drugs, used to treat HIV infections can be a rare cause of iritis. Stopping these medications usually stops the iritis symptoms.
Risk factors Your risk of developing iritis increases if you: • Have a specific genetic alteration. People with a specific change in a gene that’s essential for healthy immune system function are more likely to develop iritis. This change is labelled HLA-B27. • Develop a sexually transmitted infection. Certain infections, such as syphilis or HIV/AIDs, are linked with a significant risk of iritis. • Have a weakened immune system or an autoimmune disorder. This includes conditions such as ankylosing spondylitis and reactive arthritis. • Smoke tobacco. Studies have shown that smoking contributes to your risk.
Complications If not treated properly, iritis could lead to: • Cataracts. • An irregular pupil. Scar tissue can cause the iris to stick to the underlying lens or the cornea, making the pupil irregular in shape and the iris sluggish in its reaction to light.
• Glaucoma • Calcium deposits on the cornea (band keratopathy). • Swelling within the retina (cystoid macular oedema).
Treatment Topical steroid eye drops are the mainstay of treatment, but steroid may also be given as an injection around the eye or taken orally. Dilating eye drops are frequently used to prevent the iris from sticking to other ocular tissues, most notably the lens. Medications for glaucoma are sometimes required. Follow up with your ophthalmologist is essential.

7 Tips to Make Exercise a Lasting Part of Your Life BY CAROLYN HANSEN
I
s exercise on your list of goals for this year? Have you been trying to make exercise a regular part of your life but have been struggling with a way to make that happen? After all, exercise is one of the easiest and most effective ways of improving your physical and mental health. This includes reducing your risk for serious health problems, easing depression and anxiety, boosting your energy and mood and relieving stress. No matter your age or fitness level, you can use physical activity to help you feel better, look better, and enjoy life more. The key is to change your approach to exercise and think about what you do that helps or, sometimes, hurts your chances of success. Here are 7 tips to make it easier to plan, prepare and commit to your workouts.
good form to work the correct muscles. Build strength and stamina – Your body needs to get accustomed to working out before you can reap the benefits.
1. Plan ahead
4.Avoid stop and start syndrome
Your busy schedule means you need to plan and prepare for your workouts ahead of time. Map it out - Work out a timetable for gym days and the workouts you’ll do on those days. Pack up - The night before, pack your bag with everything you need – workout gear, shoes, water bottle, etc.
2. Give yourself time Establishing an exercise program is not just about having goals or making a plan. You need to invest time before you reap the benefits. This allows you to: Work on your schedule – it takes trial and error to see what works best with your schedule. Learn the exercises – we weren’t born knowing how to exercise. You need the time to learn the moves and practice
3. Focus on health NOT weight loss Focus on the joys of exercise and movement instead of losing weight. Take pride in your body getting stronger or your new ability to able to exercise longer, even if it’s just in baby steps. Most likely what motivates you runs much deeper than a specific set of numbers on a scale. Identify what it is for you. Maybe you want to have more energy for your children or grandchildren or you want to be in more control of your health - whatever is your core motivation - connect to it. As you improve your health and feel better about yourself, any excess body fat will begin to fall off naturally. But the overall improvements that you will be making with your health will transform your entire life for the better. One great way to kill your confidence is to constantly start and stop your exercise routine. It’s common for people to get psyched up and dive in to working out and then drop it altogether when the craziness of life intervenes. But if you start and stop all the time, you are setting yourself up for a never-ending cycle, where you won’t see any progress. Don’t try tackle the world in a day. Think baby steps. Think of what you can do and schedule today even if it’s small increments of time that you eventually build upon. Commit to what you CAN achieve, at least at first.
5. Think of how exercise boosts your sense of well-being Sure, exercise is a great disease preventer and can help you live longer, but what you might find more rewarding is to
think about all the immediate benefits exercise provides to your well-being. All of us can use exercise today to get more energy, alleviate stress, increase productivity, improve our outlook, sleep better and feel happier - today! Think about what you stand to gain if you work out today. Maybe it’s a sunnier disposition or the satisfaction in knowing you pushed your body. Just give it some thought or better yet, make a list.
6. Protect the time you have set aside for exercise Resist the urge to neglect exercising because there are things that you decide are “more important.” Don’t let others treat your exercise time as inferior either. Just as you would protect the time you have set aside for any other appointment, you need to protect the time you have set aside for exercise in whatever way possible. Life happens, but for the most part you can protect this time.
7. See exercise as an act of self-love Sometimes it’s easier to drop the expectations of exercise, drop the measure of results, and just move your body because you want to feel good! After all, if our intention is to live a meaningful and healthy life, we will make decisions that support this intention and we live with purpose and design. In return we feel good when we see ourselves accomplishing what we set out to do. The more self-love you have for yourself, the better prepared you are for healthy living for the long haul. Even more, you will start to attract people and circumstances to you that will further support your well-being.
But don’t wait! Do it TODAY!

Decorating bach
PROJECT BY JACKIE JONES INTERIOR DESIGN
W
ill your bach be a sea of appropriately themed accessories and colours? Will it be chaotic collection of handy-me-down bits and bobs? Or will it be somewhere in between – a place where you can impose a modicum of style but which will cope with the onslaught of mismatched furniture and homewares that always end up at a bach? As soon as you own a bach it opens up the doors to gift-giving friends and relatives who turn up with anything from quirky signs that announce the direction of the beach or warnings about ‘over-refreshing’ yourself, to sea-themed accessories and fish-shaped bowls. There will be board games, lawn games and all sorts of other games… which will be very welcome if you’ve decided to go screen-free at the beach. Most baches are fairly small, and the expected decorating standards can be fairly relaxed. Which means you can give the inside a quick and easy paint in just a weekend, and make quite a difference. Visitors are less likely to be startled by an adventurous colour scheme or an inexpertly executed seascape mural at a bach. You can have a bit of fun and unleash that creative artist you always harboured within. Or you might consider keeping the wall colour neutral to cope with the fact that none of the furniture matches and that no two of your coffee cups are the same.
Dealing with clutter
If yours is an older bach, chances are it won’t be endowed with beautifully fitted out cupboards. It may not even have wardrobes. Look out for any opportunity for creative storage. Bookshelves go a long way to storing not only books but linen, or kitchen items like glasses, crockery or even food. Trunks or lidded ottomans are great to double up as coffee tables and to store linen and games. Old tea chests in the garage can store the cricket set, fishing rods, and volley ball net. Use under-bed trundle boxes and hooks on any wall surface possible for brooms, coats, dog leads and hats.
Dual purpose spaces
Resene Duck Egg Blue walls and Resene Spinnaker floors are a beachy backdrop for pops of retro red and yellow. A ladder painted in Resene Xanadu acts as casual hanging space. The cabinet has drawers in Resene Bianca, while shells and baskets are used as accessories.
Fixed Fee $12,000
Many spaces in modestly sized baches need to serve dual purposes. A fold-out sofa turns the lounge into another bedroom. Is there a corner for visitors to stash their bags and bedlinen during the day? Garages become sleep-outs. Is there space to store spare mattresses in the rafters or up against the wall? A bedroom built for two can become a dormitory for several with the help of well-designed bunks and trundle beds. Consider an extendable table, or just a small indoor table, knowing that for most of summer you’ll be dining on the deck. Form a flat spot on the lawn for tents and/or cricket games or petanque. continued on page 18

If you’re keen on a theme, try these for size: • Go retro with a 1960s vibe and get playful with turquoise, red, yellow, sky blue and orange (see suggestions below). Don’t be shy – use them all in different rooms or areas of the bach so that you end up with an almost colour-blocked look. Fossick in secondhand stores or online for old crockery and mid-century furniture. • Try some surfie chic with intense tropical colours, and accessorise with cherished momentoes from exotic climes. Keep your old surfboard in the living room (yes, you’re allowed), add some palm-print cushions, hang your most beaten-up straw hat on the hook, put the Beach Boys on your playlist and mix up a batch of pina coladas. • Seafoam and sandy colours never go amiss. Let soft aqua, dusky blue and bleached ochre wash through your bach. Add seagrass rugs, baskets, shells and filmy fabrics. This sort of colour scheme is easy on the eye and easily adapted to current looks. It can turn a little bit Scandi – use Resene Duck Egg Blue or Resene Scandi for the walls. The first is a delicate blue-grey while the second is a chilled-out palest ice blue. Or it can go Cape Cod in style with Resene Colorwood Whitewash on the timbers, white walls (try Resene Sea Fog) and accents of nautical blue (try Resene Into The Blue or Resene True Blue). • Go au naturalle with robust, honest materials like plywood and concrete, protected with Resene stains, urethanes and waxes. This is an honest, pared back look very popular with new baches – it harks to the baches (bachelor pads) and cribs of old, which were often old shacks made of whatever leftover materials were to hand. Of course, today’s versions aren’t quite so rumpty, and have that designer edge. And if you don’t have a bach, you can bring some of these bach decorating ideas into your own home and enjoy a sense of being on holiday even when you’re not.
When is the best time to sell my house? This is a question that I get asked often and even though there is a very simple answer there are multiple things that you need to take into consideration when deciding the best time to sell your property. THE PROPERTY ITSELF – Examples of things that you may consider when deciding if now is the right time to place your property on the BY ERIKA BLANK market are things such as whether the property needs work, or if there are simple things that you can do to lift the value of your property prior to sale. A lick of paint or some basic landscaping don’t take a lot of time but can make a dramatic difference to the presentation of your home. It may be worth putting in a few months of work prior to putting your home on the market to make sure it is looking great so that you will get the best possible price.
THE MARKET – Taking a look online at the moment you will be bombarded with headlines such as “Banks lifting mortgage rates!” “Housing shortage pushing up prices” “Sales volumes predicted to decline in 2017” There is no doubt that the past year or so has seen a great lift in property values in Whangarei. With low interest rates, an excess of buyers and a shortage of property it has been and still is a great time to sell. As to what will happen in 2017, well educated predications can be made, however, there are many different opinions as to how long this current property “boom” will last. My advice in a buoyant market is that if you sell do not delay too long in buying another property. The last thing you want is for the market to get away from you while you are house hunting.
S S E L D EN MER M U S S G N I V SA 2050% OFF

HURRY IN WHILE STOCKS LAST!
THE SEASON – There are advantages to selling at different times of the year. In summer, the sun is shining, the house is warm, the gardens look great and people generally feel more positive in the summer season. On the flip side there is often a shortage of property for sale on the market over winter and competition in 2016 was fierce. This shortage of supply has continued into the spring and summer of 2016 with exceptional prices being achieved throughout the year. In reality the best time to sell your home is: When you want to or need to. That’s it! With my clients I always take into account all of the above factors regardless of when they are selling to make sure they get the most out of the transaction. The condition of your property, market and season will all influence the method of sale that I recommend, the price, the marketing and of course the overall strategy in getting my clients the best results.

Keeping it simple W
ith so much choice in home renovation products, how on earth do you decide? The word renovation sends most of us spiralling into equal parts excitement and dread. To visualise the big picture but successfully mastermind tiny details is a true art. Decisions you didn’t dream of will be required, concerning products and processes of which you may currently be ignorant. Renovating is not unlike getting married. It pays to know unequivocally what you do and don’t like; to realise that those trends you adore now may or may not last. For those who prefer to personally lead a home project (as opposed to employing an interior designer), immediately
apparent will be the mountain of information and plethora of choices. A thorough search of your own taste and motivation comes first. But how to start? Trawl the internet first? Hot-foot it around shops every weekend for months? The best beginning may be neither. A thorough search of your own taste and motivation comes first, because this is all about you. Do you know the ideal scale of your alterations or additions? Do you have an exact figure to spend? Do you want the renovation to make the space seem bigger? Funkier? More elegant? List exactly what you want your renovation to achieve.
Think about how eco-friendly your choices are. Are you considering solar water and underfloor heating, use of grey-water, optimal double glazing and insulation levels? Quickly eliminate looks/styles/products you don’t like, or which don’t answer your overall aim. If you really love a particular finish or product, stand firm and question those who try to persuade you otherwise. Don’t capitulate easily and then suffer regret! Remember that details like trims and door-handles set an overall style, so give their selection due consideration and time; don’t discount their importance. Be happy to be individual in your taste. Adding a bold, confident or luxury item to your scheme will often lift an otherwise average renovation to new heights! If you and your partner can’t agree, resist compromising over one room in favour of each making design decisions about different spaces; an approach that’s often more successful. if you’re stuck on colour selections, take turns to stand in front of the Resene colour selector at your local Resene ColorShop and pick out the colour palettes that immediately appeal to you, then sort those from most to least favourite. Compare your selections – often you will find there is more common ground than you expect. Choose the highest-quality products you can. Think about what will be stunning long-term. Take whatever time is needed to do it once and do it right.
HOME TRENDS
Commit to paper specific functional aims like, ‘costeffective warmth throughout,’ before moving onto aesthetic, stylistic preferences and favoured products. Think about open homes you’ve visited; magazine features you’ve admired. What did you envy and why? If you loved a particular deck or piece of furniture, note it down. A scheme can be designed around it! Spend some time online on interior/exterior design sites. Home, building and design magazines all have their own sites. Dream a little.

Hokianga Sojourn Getting lost in the Hokianga by Hinurewa te Hau, General Manager at Creative Northland
E
ndless summer that’s what is all about... days at the beach, walks in the bush and little sojourns into quaint townships to check out local food, retro shops, arts and crafts and whatever else is on offer. This summer I visited the Hokianga - one of the most idyllic places on earth. It’s about 1 and a half hour’s from Whangarei to Opononi, then 5 minutes to Omapere. These settlements have the best view in town looking directly across to the sand dunes on the north side of the Hokianga stunning. However, 16 minutes away is the coastal enclave of Rawene and the Hokianga ferry that takes you across the scenic harbour to Kohukohu where you can travel north to the communities of Panguru, Mitimiti or north west to Broadwood and Pawarenga on the Whangape harbour. Rawene is always special in my mind to visit, nestled on the shores of the Hokianga harbour, it is tranquil and peaceful and has a strong sense of heritage which is reflected in its buildings and the eclectic array of galleries, second hand shops and coastline to chillax the hours away or while you wait for the Ferry. We all like a browse (even the men folk) and there are some cool finds such as ‘The Station’, a second hand shop that has been opened by Joanne Barrett and Eru Wano who have relocated from Auckland. Eru is a musician and Jo is the publisher of Ponsonby News and recently won the Far North Arts Award. Just down the road on the corner is No.1 gallery the vision of Lynn Lawton and Linda Blinko who

The car ferry is a 10 minute trip across the harbour to Kohukohu, this community has one of the best examples of heritage buildings and old villas - some lovingly restored and others loved by the people who live in them. When you hit the township there is that wow moment where artlovers experience something out of the ordinary, with the likes of Village Arts Gallery, ArtWorld, Studio Gallery and Morrow Photography. This community has a number of writers, musicians, artists who have made this special part of the world their home. The wonderfully scenic drive that connects these places is littered with beautiful examples of old colonial churches and if you want go exploring there are other oddities such as the ‘chainsaw’ house on the road to Herekino from Broadwood. You can feel your care’s being washed away as you find yourself drifting back to a time when life was perhaps a bit simpler.
ANNEMARIE FLORIAN Annemarie Florian is an Author, Librarian and Bookseller for Storytime, storytime. net.nz
T
hirty-five years ago a small group of new parents decided to pool resources in order to open a children’s store, a store that would stock quality books and toys essential to children’s growing needs. They believed (and still do!) that children need art and stories and poems and music and play. And so they searched out the best art and stories and poems and music and play resources available. And STORYTIME was born. They say it takes a village to raise a child. Well, the very same philosophy was applied to the growth of the business: the store grew and evolved with the avid support of the wider community. People came to browse and buy some of the best children’s books and toys available. They also came to share the joys and challenges of parenting and teaching, and to talk about the changing role of education in our society and culture.
The store’s survival and development was largely due to being that community hub, to embracing the community, to doing business inclusively. Collaboration was key. Teddy Bears’ Picnics were staged, author visits hosted, bringing the likes of Margaret Mahy, Patricia Grace, William Taylor, Bob Kerr, Tessa Duder, Glenn Colquhoun, David Elliot, Janet Hunt, Melanie Drewery, Donovan Bixley, Mark Sommerset, Brigid Lowry and many more. In association with Whangarei Libraries, Educare and PlunketNZ, STORYTIME initiated and was the major driver of the “Books for Babies” project – where every baby born in the region is donated a quality first board book. When Matariki celebrations became a feature event for our community, STORYTIME joined with Whangarei Libraries to stage workshops for all the tamariki, encouraging them to share ideas and to consider and celebrate their role in the future. STORYTIME was the major sponsor and driver of the annual STORYTIME Character Hunt held at Whangarei Central Library, where upwards of 200 children and their families gather to make-believe together for half a day. Each Poetry Day we built a Great Wall of Words out of children’s (and adults’) contributed poems. And on International Talk Like a Pirate Day, STORYTIME annually asked everyone to play pirates. To come dressed in pirate garb, to partake in pirate parlance, to read and follow time-worn maps for hidden

treasure and be outrageously silly! For a small operation, we’ve been proud to keep this very full community calendar -- lately thanks to the commitment and enthusiasm of the wonderfully knowledgeable and multi-talented Kelly Shepherd. STORYTIME closed its doors for the last time in January when the shop lease on Porowini Avenue ended. So it’s the end of an era. Looking to the future, I’m hopeful that 2017 and the years following will bring a renewal in our community. A renewal in ‘social investment’, the kind of social investment those founding STORYTIME women initially envisioned.
Dame Whina Cooper said it best: Take care of our children. Take care of what they hear, take care of what they see, take care of what they feel. For how the children grow, so will be the shape of Aotearoa.

he Women’s World Car of the Year awards have been announced and Honda has taken two category wins, an unprecedented achievement ment for a manufacturer, with the Civic winning the dget “Family Car” Category, and the Jazz winning the “Budget Car” category. The awards, now in their seventh year, are the only global obal car honours voted for exclusively by female automotive journalists. rnalists. Sandy Myhre, CEO and founder of the Women’s World d Car of the Year says: “From the early lists the judges sent in there e were some strong contenders in one or two categories but mostly stly only a few percentage points separate the top three cars in each segment. Honda must be congratulated for winning two categories – the Family Car Award for the Honda Civic and the Budget Car Award for the Honda Jazz.” The voting process for Women’s Car of the Year awards ds is rigorous. Each member of the global judging panel submits their personal nominations. This year’s awards saw 294 cars nominated. C
ontinuing until 19 February 2017 at Whangarei Art Museum – Te Manawa Toi are our two current exhibitions Partial Loss by Cathy Tuato’o Ross and Ellen Smith and Welcome to Cosy Cosmos by Suza Schiele. Following on from their success we are pleased to present BOB JAHNKE: ATA: A Third Reflection and Whenua Hou – New Maori Ceramics. In ATA: A Third Reflection Professor Bob Jahnke explores Maori creation narratives and prophetic imagery through light and reflection. Meaning “form” or “reflection” in Te Reo Maori ‘Ata’ also refers to the act of deliberation. This new body of wall-mounted and free standing installation works explores connections between light and perception, history and retrospection. Jahnke translates neon forms into diamonds, triangles, crosses and clubs, and words such as “Ata” and “Tuku” into spatial reflections that appear endless. Inspired by the practices of Ivan Navarro and Paolo Scirpa the technique results in a repetition of pattern that appears infinite but disappears into a void of darkness. This is the third in a series of exhibitions by Bob Jahnke using “Ata” as a metaphorical device. Ata is the link between the past, the present and the future; it is an endless narrative or whakapapa - of creating light from nothingness, of the emergence of Te Ao M rama from Te Po. ATA tours to Whangarei Art Museum from Pataka Art + Museum. Whenua Hou – New Maori Ceramics showcases the work diverse work and practices of eight Maori artists including Davina Duke, Aaron Scythe, Tracey Keith, Dan Couper, Stevei Houkamau, Hera Johns, Hana Rakena, and Jess Paraone. Maori uku (clay) art began its development in the 1980s through a small group of artists who formed Nga Kaihanga Uku, the National Maori Clay Workers’ Association. In the decades since, thanks to these influential forerunners, uku has become a more established material within Maori art making, Whenua Hou – New Maori Ceramics looks at the present, survey current Uku practice. Whenua Hou has been curated by Tauranga Art Gallery and Object Space and has been generously supported by First Sovereign Trust.

e live in an impulsive based world. e was a local skater who hung out in The Strand by day. Everybody knew him by his nickname, and he was the attention of many other teenage girls in the area. Unlike a lot of the other boys, he was a gentleman at heart with love for his mum and a certain cheek in his eyes. I think that’s what got me. I wasn’t interested in a relationship back then. I’d planned a trip to Whangas, ‘the big smoke’ for a group trip to Auckland and had stopped in town to find this ‘Polarbear’ whom everyone spoke so highly. I knew all his friends and he’d heard of the fun Kerikeri chick. However, I had the wrong boy, so as I chatted up one of his friends, Mr P continued to smirk in the corner puffing on a dirty ciggie, jeans sitting on his behind with his skateboard at his feet. Back then, it was cool to wear a chained wallet from the front pocket through to the back, his cap worn backwards with attitude and his laugh was so contagious that very soon my focus fell on him. It wasn’t long before we were talking on the phone from afar. The one with the cord so long that you had to pull yourself down around the

Sweet sixteen and never been kissed? hallway to have a private conversation away from the listening ears of the olds. Many car trips were made both night and day to deliver a single rose to my bedroom window, or for a short conversation of growing interest for each other; then this boy would drive an hour home. One rose became a dozen, a like became a love and a kiss under the basketball hoop between games soon became a “will you marry me?” For us, we knew. I don’t know how. We both weren’t looking for love; we were only 17. However our dreams seemed to merge into one and soon we were best friends on a train heading for our new life together in Wellington, a suitcase in one hand and some cash in the other. I look at our ten-year-old and my thoughts toward her would naturally tell a very different story. Don’t hang out with the skater boys, lock your bedroom window, stay at home a little longer and don’t get engaged so early. But you know what? There is a part of me that would be very excited if she were to experience what we have because I know now that not many stories unravel like this fairytale and he still makes me giggle stupidly like a teenager… nearly two decades later.
Contraceptives and a Time Machine: How to rekindle your love life
C
ontraceptives and a Time Machine: How to rekindle your love life The placenta is an organ which enables a child to suck the vitality from its parents through the umbilical cord. In the first year alone, the parasitic child will drain its parents’ taut skin and flat stomachs until the dad looks like Ricky Gervais and the mum… also looks like Ricky Gervais. The demon child will attempt to suck the romance out of its parents’ love-life, too. Here are some solutions. ATTEMPT BY PARENTS TO REKINDLE ROMANCE: Parents-only dinner date at KFC followed by a drive up Parihaka ‘cause you’re too bloated to walk HOW THE KID WILL TRY STUFF IT UP: Kid screams at you when you get home for not bringing back KFC chips SOLUTION: Sate the demon child with sacrifices of takeaways three times a day, seven days a week. Beg the forgiveness of the demon child. ATTEMPT BY PARENTS TO REKINDLE ROMANCE: A romantic Sunday matinee movie, like Magic Mike XXXXXXL HOW THE KID WILL TRY STUFF IT UP: Kid whinges that you’re abandoning it and the babysitter is scaaaaary until you cancel the date and take the kid to some Pixar BS instead and blow the whole date budget on insanely expensive movie popcorn (beginning at $5.50 for about 50 grams) SOLUTION: Obey everything the kids says or else you will blame yourself for depriving the child of overpriced popcorn when some unrelated thing goes wrong in their life 20 years from now. ATTEMPT BY PARENTS TO REKINDLE ROMANCE: Sex in risqué places HOW THE KID WILL TRY STUFF IT UP: Kid plays by itself for a while then goes eerily quiet; parents can’t withstand the creeping sensation that something precious is being destroyed and they must cancel the sex to go check on the kid. SOLUTION: No sex again, ever. If you weren’t promiscuous when you were 18, you’ve blown your chance. ATTEMPT BY PARENTS TO REKINDLE ROMANCE: Parents holding hands, enjoying a gentle stroll through one of Northland’s gorgeous parks HOW THE KID WILL TRY STUFF IT UP: SWING ME, DADDY! SWING ME! YOU’RE NOT SWINGING, DADDY! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA SOLUTION: Puncture your own eardrums with a hot needle. It’s less painful than hearing the kid scream like that. ATTEMPT BY PARENTS TO REKINDLE ROMANCE: Healthy recreational time apart so each parent can come home refreshed, fit and rejuvenated. HOW THE KID WILL TRY STUFF IT UP: Kid tells you about their friend from school whose parents have a textbook perfect marriage and never need time apart. Facebookstalk the perfect parents. Get depressed. Stagger around drenched in shame. SOLUTION: Contraceptives and a time machine.
