Editor’s note

J

odi Bryant has taken a muchdeserved break this month, so I am filling in from my home in the Far North. With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, I met with Kaitaia couple David and Phillipa Senior, who have been married for 43 years. Their inspirational story on pages 4&5 shares how love conquers all, despite having more than their fair share of challenges, including health and disability. I was also inspired to meet with Rochelle Hedges and Chris Youens, who are the backbone of Soul Food What’s Cooking Whangarei, which provides hot meals to the homeless and hungry. This couple are so dedicated, they are not even planning to take the night off before their wedding – just to be sure everyone gets fed! You can read their story on page 6.

This month we also have a look at ways to find who you really are (page 13), a secret weapon to transform your body (page 15) and what makes Onerahi’s Flames Restaurant unique (page 19). If you were thinking about eyeball tattooing, don’t do anything until you read this article from Eye Centre Primecare, page 14. We also have eight motivating pages of Savvy Homes. I simply love the plans by Tracey Harvey, from Frazerhurst, to screen and shelter her new spa pool (page 24). For me, February truly is the month of love – not only because of Valentine’s Day but also because it is the month of my wedding anniversary. It has been 12 years since I married Kevin “Nudge” Piper at Whangarei Heads and I can think of dozens of reasons why I’m still glad I did! I hope you find something to love in this month’s issue of Savvy.

Communication counts when love is blind BY DENISE PIPER

With Valentine’s Day coming up, Far North couple David and Phillipa Senior reflect on 43 years’ marriage through richer and poorer, in sickness and in health.

B

efore Kaitaia couple Phillipa and David Senior were allowed to marry, Phillipa’s mother said they had to wait until Phillipa turned 20. “She was worried. She had been married a long time herself and she could see down the years and know the challenges that were going to be there,” Phillipa explains. And there were plenty of challenges to overcome for the couple, with David fully loosing his sight at 13. However, accommodating David’s disability was the least of problems for the pair. Learning how to communicate effectively was the first, and most important, step, David says. “Because I can’t see body language, we

really needed to communicate well verbally; we really had to work on that. “The worse thing for a blind person is the silent treatment – generally we always say what we want at the time,” he says. The couple met at a youth camp and managed a three-year long-distance relationship by sending tapes to each other. Most weekends, David would take a sevenhour bus ride from Auckland to Tauranga to visit his love. David and Phillipa married in August 1976. Their good communication, selflessness and commitment to each other was tested early on in their marriage. “I think our biggest challenge was the birth of our first child, Derek who was born 16th

August 1978,” Phillipa says. “The doctors knew straight away. They came in and said ‘there’s something wrong with your baby’s eyes.” Until then, the couple had no idea David’s blindness, caused by congenital glaucoma, was hereditary. Phillipa says “David’s mother was so rapt that he had found someone, she thought a genetic condition would put me off, so she said ‘your babies will be fine’.”

This lie meant Derek’s diagnosis came as a shock, David admits. “I found that really, really difficult. I had a lot of guilt,” he says. To make matters worse, Derek also had a condition called aniridia, where his irises did not work. To help protect his limited eyesight, he had to be kept inside darkened rooms for the first year of his life. “We had to put blankets over the curtains because it wasn’t dark enough,” Phillipa says.

“We’ve been through many things that could’ve ripped apart a marriage but we got through with communication and support for each other.”

Northland Meningococcal W Vaccination Programme Stage Two of the free Meningococcal W outbreak vaccination community campaign starts on 21 January until 22 February. For children aged from 9 months to under 5 years and those aged 13 to under 20 years at the time of presentation. Children must be Northland residents to be eligible. You can call 0800 600 720 between 8am and 8pm, 7 days a week to speak to a local public health nurse. /+* &,$ +'( 0"#*# - %1!,!% !) ,#-* .+' -,$ (+ keep up to date go to the DHB website:

SHARING THE LOVE WITH

Whangarei’s hungry

H

omemade pizzas, lasagne, vegetable pasta, meat in gravy, roast potatoes, hash browns, apricot slice, and homemade apple and blueberry crumble: Soul Food What’s Cooking Whangarei certainly offers plenty of rib-sticking good fare. Two days a week, the organisation has a meal open to everyone, catering for Whangarei’s homeless and disenfranchised. For the last five years, Rochelle Hedges and Chris Youens have been the backbone of this organisation, now a registered charity. Thanks to free rent, the meals have run on a Monday and Friday night from the Anglican Church hall in Regent for the last three years. Chris and Rochelle have now become well-known and trusted by the city’s rough sleepers and those who would otherwise go hungry. The assault and death in December of Whangarei homeless man Eddie Townsend was “heartbreaking”, as he was a regular, Rochelle says. “We helped him a lot, not only with food but with rolls for his dogs,” she says. Rochelle can relate to regulars because of her background. As a teenager, she spent a few months living in a car with her mother and sister. The experience made her want to help others in similar hardship. “I don’t know why, probably because not many people helped us and my mum was always a giver,” she says. That generosity of spirit is a quality Rochelle now sees in a number of regular clients, who often want to give back however

Rochelle Hedges and Chris Youens open the door to all.

“We know some people who only survive on the food they get from us. Sometimes, we’re their last resort.” they can, including washing dishes and sweeping the floor. “One guy didn’t need our help anymore but he turned up with a roast and some veggies and asked if he could serve it. He said ‘you guys helped me, let me help now’,” Rochelle says. The first night Soul Food ran a meal, the police said there were only three homeless people in Whangarei. A “fair few” more than three turned up, encouraged by Chris who walked the streets, dressed as a homeless person. Now 20 to 60 people are served each night, although not all are homeless. Some are children – three come in prams. Soul Food What’s Cooking Whangarei also offers free pickups from Otaika and

free healthcare checks once a fortnight. Donated clothes and toiletries are given out when available. The organisation prides itself on opening the doors to everyone, no questions asked. Chris says some people come along purely for the company and that is welcomed. There are just two rules: treat everyone with respect and, if you wouldn’t eat it, don’t serve it, Rochelle says. At Soul Food, taking food for later is not only allowed, it is actively encouraged. Wrapped sandwiches are served every meal, as they are a favourite to stuff in pockets for later, she says. Leftovers are packaged for clients to take away and regulars, if they miss a meal, are found and given food.

The fact that Chris and Rochelle know where many of the homeless sleep, shows some of their credibility with the roughsleeping community. “We know some people who only survive on the food they get from us,” Rochelle says. “Sometimes, we’re their last resort.” Chris says it is sad Whangarei is spending hundreds of thousands on the Hundertwasser centre, when it could be building a homeless shelter instead. “We don’t need fancy buildings. I would like to have the council do more to help homeless people.” Soul Food now works in with Open Arms Day Centre, which provides meals and support to homeless people during the day. Rochelle says Soul Food has an “awesome bunch” of about 20 regular volunteers, plus monthly support from members of the Mormon Church and the Catholic Church. Local organisations also donate, including Stan Semenoff Group, Baker’s Crust, Handsome Frog Café, Penguin Wholesalers and Food Rescue. Chris says everything else comes out of their own pocket, and they have a double garage filled with fridges and freezers full of food to turn into meals. “Mondays and Fridays we feed them but seven days a week we’re still running the group with pick-ups of food, drop-offs of food parcels and organising for the next meal,” he says. It can be quite hectic for the couple, with Rochelle working as a caregiver as well as volunteering. As well as spending time with their three children, the couple are also busy planning their wedding. But their love for each other will not stop them sharing the love with those in need. “We’re doing Soul Food the night before the wedding, as far as we know,” Rochelle says. “Just because we’re doing what we want to do and getting married, they’re still hungry,” she says. “We just love doing it really.”

BBQ BREAKFAST

with the Prime Minister sure to be a hit at Waitangi For the first time in four years the leaders of New Zealand’s main political parties will both attend Waitangi Day commemorations in the Bay of Islands.

T

he pre-Waitangi Day powhiri for dignitaries will be held at Te Whare Runanga at the Upper Treaty Grounds for the second year in a row after a decision was made last year to bypass Te Tii Marae, where it has traditionally been held, after years of controversy. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern will be attending the powhiri on February 5, and National leader Simon Bridges has also confirmed he will be going but will commemorate Waitangi Day itself in his electorate - Tauranga. It is the first time leaders of both parties have attended commemorations at Waitangi since 2015 after former Prime Minister John Key decided not to attend ceremonies in 2016 and Bill English chose not to attend as

Prime Minister in 2017 or as leader of the opposition in 2018. “It is my first Waitangi Day as leader of the opposition and I am looking forward to it,” Bridges said. “Waitangi Day commemorations occur all around the country, not just in Waitangi, so it will be good to be able to attend a number of different events to commemorate this important national day.” Pita Paraone, chairman of the Waitangi Day organising committee, said the retiring and newly appointed Chief Justices and GovenorGeneral Dame Patsy Reddy will be welcomed to the marae on Monday, February 4. That same day renowned navigator and master waka builder Sir Hekenukumai Puhipi, also known as Hek Busby, will be formally presented with his knighthood.

The following day politicians - including Ardern, Cabinet Ministers, and other distinguished guests - will be welcomed to Te Whare Runanga. Meanwhile, Waitangi Day itself will start off at 5am with the dawn service. Paraone said the Prime Minister’s breakfast will take the same format it did last year with Cabinet Ministers - and likely Ardern herself - cooking breakfast on the barbecue. This time it will be held at the Upper Treaty Grounds, rather than by the waka house. “I think people enjoyed it last year, particularly the opportunity to share bread with the Prime Minister and her ministerial colleagues. You’ve got to remember there was the novel aspect of it too, because not every country’s citizens have the opportunity

of having breakfast cooked by the Prime Minister,” Paraone said. Paraone said the annual waka fleet and mass haka on Te Tii Beach will take place again, and as usual there will be markets and lots of entertainment.

Don’t be afraid to try something unexpected either, like a tidy white t-shirt under a summer blazer and skirt. “Re-use a smart summer tote bag as a document or laptop holder. Yes, they might be better off at the beach but your summer workwear should be all about ease and having a tote bag nearby is a handy reminder that you’ve got to make the most of these long summer days while they last, so clock out early when you can and replace documents with a beach towel and togs — your mind and workload will be all the more better for it.”

Paris Mitchell, stylist and Paris Georgia co-founder “Investing in a chunky designer sandal at the beginning of summer is a key styling tip from me, as a quality sandal adds comfort while making any outfit feel effortless. “I adore an oversized, sheer, silk shirt through the summer. Tucked into a pair of tailored trousers or jeans, you’re protected from the sun and have enough room to breathe. “White trousers can get a bad rap but if you hunt down the perfect pair (I often opt for a wide-leg, tailored look) they can be the most beautiful garment to throw on all summer long. You’ll instantly feel polished and ready for the office. “I also love a woman in a long linen dress. With the right amount of tailoring, a linen dress can take you from the beach to the office. Ideal for a working woman in the midst of a hot summer, it’s comfortable yet chic.” Left: You’ll instantly feel polished and ready for the office with a pair of wide-legged, tailored white trousers. Rosie Herdman, Viva writer and fashion assistant “I think accessories are a great way to keep the summer vibe going when you’re back at work without compromising the overall feel of your work attire, but rather adding a bit of pizazz. Some statement jewellery, hair clasps or a bright bag

can be a fun, small-scale nod to the holidays we left behind. “If you are the person who wears black year-round, fear not! I feel like people are often told they can’t wear black in summer, but in my opinion it’s all about the fabric and silhouette. A crisp, black, cotton shift dress paired with sandals is a good warm weather option, as is a tailored shirt dress, or loose black culottes paired with a shirt.” Left: Accessories are a great way to keep the summer vibe going when you’re back at work. The one treatment you’ll wish you started sooner Caci Whangarei talks to SAVVY readers on laser hair removal

T

hey say good things take time, and that’s true for beauty treatments too – especially when it comes to laser hair removal. This popular hair removal treatment can save you time and money in the long run compared to regular shaving and waxing, but there are a few things you need to know before getting it. Here’s why it pays to take the plunge with laser hair removal sooner rather than later:

spend eight weeks of their lives getting rid of unwanted hair. Not to mention the cost of getting regular waxes, razors for shaving, hair removal creams or other methods. By contrast, laser hair removal is a longterm solution, which means the sooner you start, the sooner you can enjoy the results of your treatments – and the savings that come along with them!

It takes time Laser hair removal can be a very effective solution for getting rid of unwanted hair, but it does involve a time commitment. For the best results, you’ll need more than one treatment. The skin experts at Caci Whangarei typically recommend up to eight sessions, with six weeks in between each treatment, so we can target as many of the hairs during the growth cycle as possible. So, if you’re thinking of starting your laser hair removal treatments, it’s worth getting onto it sooner rather than later! You’ll save more in the long run Studies have shown that on average, women

Stress-free results Love that hair-free feeling? Having laser hair removal means you don’t have to worry about unwanted hair – it’s sorted. Plus, Caci Whangarei have recently introduced their new Diode Laser Hair Removal System. And to make the process even easier, Caci clinics offer an exclusive guarantee for one year after your treatments. That means if you don’t get to an 80% reduction in hair at the end of your treatment plan, they’ll treat you for up to five additional sessions within a 12-month period, at no further cost to you.

If you’re interested in finding out more, we’d recommend booking in for a complimentary consultation at Caci Whangarei to talk through your options.

A HIGH-RISK unnecessary procedure BY NSW GOVERNMENT HEALTH

There is a growing interest in eyeball tattooing but the procedure is dangerous and unnecessary.

E

ye Centre Primecare has recently had enquiries about eyeball tattooing. We strongly advise against this procedure. Eyeball tattooing, the permanent colouring of the white of the eye, is also advised against by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists, viewing it as an extremely dangerous and superfluous procedure.

What is eyeball tattooing? Eyeball tattooing is a term describing the permanent colouring of the white of the eye (called the sclera). It is performed by injecting ink with a needle underneath the top layer of the eye onto the sclera, in several locations, from where the ink then slowly spreads to cover all of the sclera. This procedure is undertaken by only a few tattoo artists around the world. It is permanent and non-reversible.

What are the health risks from eyeball tattooing? The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO doctors that specialise in diseases of the eye) considers eyeball tattooing a high-risk procedure and recommends it be performed by a doctor only when medically indicated, such as for specific eye abnormalities. RANZCO advises against eyeball tattooing for cosmetic purposes, viewing it as an extremely dangerous and unnecessary procedure.

ARE OUR FOCUS

FOR ALL DISEASES OF THE EYE 14 | SAVVY

There are many potential health risks from undergoing eyeball tattooing. They range from mild risks, such as a mild irritation of the eye, to severe risks like blindness. The known risks include, but are not limited to: • perforation of the eye which can lead to blindness (the sclera is less than one millimetre thick) • retinal detachment (an urgent medical condition that may leave the patient blind) • endophthalmitis (infection inside the eye, that can lead to blindness) • sympathetic ophthalmia (an autoimmune inflammatory response that affects both eyes and can result in blindness)

• Initial consultation $162.00 Retinal photos $7 • OCT Scan $104.00 • Cataract surgery from $3300.00 per eye * Price inc GST but not including cost of pre-operative consultation Southern Cross affiliated

• transmission of blood-borne viruses (for example Hepatitis B and C, and HIV) from equipment that is not cleaned properly • bleeding and infection at the injection sites • delayed diagnosis of medical conditions, as the true colour of the sclera is now hidden (for example, jaundice is often a first symptom for many diseases) • adverse reactions to the ink • sensitivity to light • staining of the surrounding tissue due to ink migration. The long-term risks are not yet known. It is important to note, it is unlikely the techniques that can be used to remove skin tattoos could be used on the eyeball. Removal of the tattoo is, therefore, likely impossible.

BY CAROLYN HANSEN ANYTIME FITNESS, WHANGAREI

I

n the health and fitness world, quick fixes are a dime a dozen. Many “experts” promise amazing results with little effort required. Although my “secret weapon” is not a magic pill or new superfood, it is the key to lifelong leanness. A woman’s best defence against ageing and excess body fat is healthy muscle tissue. If you are still labouring under the misconception that strengthening exercise is only for physique competitors, it’s time to change your thinking: add weight/resistance training (whether it be your own bodyweight or that of a dumbbell or machine) into your exercise routine and shift your focus from “toning” to building more lean muscle. From age 30, a woman loses 10 per cent of her muscle mass every decade, leading to fat gain, brittle bones, and for some women – a “skinny-fat” appearance. Which, unless taking action, means you will always be on the hamster wheel of diets that don’t work and exercise gimmicks that actually cause fat gain, from spiking cortisol by remaining at high heart rates for too long.

training will make you bulky and hulky, so they do a bunch of cardio instead which eats away at muscle tissue and your metabolism’s fat-burning abilities. Over time, this muscle loss leads to an overall weaker body and skeleton, while slowing metabolism. What does this mean for women as they get older? Basically, it will take you greater and greater effort to keep fat gain at bay and be at higher risk of sarcopenia (muscle loss). But, here’s the good news: You can reverse this by adding to your routine strengthening exercise – the number one exercise for fat loss, optimal health and longevity: Focus on getting stronger Often people come into the gym and do the same workout week in and week out. Make your time with strengthening exercise useful and results-oriented. Try to push yourself by adding some weight to the bar. Quit starving yourself! Get plenty of nutrient-dense REAL food (i.e. not processed), which includes a portion of quality protein each time you eat. Protein provides the building blocks for healthy muscle. Eating enough will help you sculpt lean tissue and increase recovery between your training sessions. When women increase lean muscle AND nourish themselves in a biologically appropriate way, your metabolism will thank you. Unknown to most people, one of the biggest reasons they don’t get the results they aim for is simply NOT eating enough.

When people start their fitness journey, they add a lot of cardio to their daily routine and cut calories way too low. This actually works against them. When you are not eating enough, your body panics and goes into starvation mode, slowing the metabolic rate down. At this point the body stops burning fat. There are many physical actions your body takes when you are not eating enough but there are also mental ones. Eating less usually means feeling frustrated: you are hungry, you lose your motivation and simply give up. Building muscle, losing weight or recomposing your body is a patience game. It takes time and consistency to make it work. Don’t skip meals, make food your friend not your enemy, and remember, eating more is the key to losing more and looking and feeling better. When you strive to get stronger it benefits your entire life. Your daily tasks become so much easier. Pay attention to your energy levels, the quality of your sleep, and how effortlessly you can play with your kids and hoist every grocery bag into the house in a single trip. Everyone, regardless of age and gender, will benefit from strengthening exercise. It promotes fat loss, helps maintain healthy bone mass and prevents age-related muscle loss, as well as a multitude of other health benefits. Strength training builds you up, mentally and physically, makes you a better version of yourself and makes everything better - you’ll see.

Packard Motor Museum – vehicle of the month

1927 Brough Superior SS80 Motorcycle, 1000cc A

relatively uncommon motorcycle at the Packard Motor Museum is our 1927 Brough Superior SS80. In the early years of the 20th Century, many manufacturers set up shop to produce their design of motorcycle. One of the most expensive road-going motorcycles of its time was the Brough Superior. These motorbikes were considered comparable to the Rolls-Royce motorcar in their quietness, smoothness and finish. George Brough, the maker of these famous machines, personally certified the minimum top speed of each motorcycle, as they were custom-built to meet the customer’s needs. Around 3000 of these motorcycles were made between 1921 and 1940. Originally George Brough’s father, William Brough, started the company. He became a trend-setter, building his first motorcycle in 1902 called the ‘Brough’, with a rotary-valve single cylinder engine. He then developed motorbikes with flat-twin engines. Initially, George worked with his father but after World War I, George was keen to develop his own ideas. His father wasn’t happy about the changes so George went out on his own, calling his new model the ‘Brough Superior’. When his father heard this, he commented to George, “I suppose

Fishing tips & tales with John Vowless Make the most of the good days

W

e are getting plenty of good weather and I have had plenty of good reports from Waipu, Bream Bay, Whangarei Harbour and most areas – all the way up to Cape Reinga. Fishing in harbours and areas with good tidal current has been very good. Anchoring up, deploying a weighted burley pot directly under the boat and traces at least as long as the water is deep. A good method is to have a running rig where your line goes through but is not tied to the sinker, and a swivel about 1-1.5 metres above the bait. Bait up, put your reel into free spool (spinning reels are easier to use), hold your bait and drop your sinker over the side – wait until it hits the bottom then release

your bait and put your rod into gear. Your bait will be the depth of the water plus the length of the trace, well away from the boat. This method is very effective in harbours along channel edges, usually incoming tides are better than outgoing, and current is important. If the fishing is slow try winding your line in very slowly, the bait movement often encourages the fish to strike. This rig also works well outside of harbours by drifting while dragging your bait well behind the boat. Deploy a sea anchor for a slow drift and fish softbaits or slow jigs at the same time – this can be very exciting. At this time of year, fishing up tidal rivers by casting big baits amongst the mangroves

Fishing has been good in Whangarei Harbour. Photo: Bernard Spragg via Wikimedia Commons can be very effective for snapper, often to very good size. Fishing under working birds lately has been hit-and-miss. Some fishos have been doing very well with softbaits, slow jigs and lightly weighted stray lines and, at other times catching nothing. However, when they move away from the work-ups and drift over foul ground using slow jigs and ledger rigs, they return good catches of snapper. Several anglers have said when they’ve moved only 400 metres their fortunes change for the better. So, if your favourite spot isn’t working,

maybe after an hour or so it’s worth a move to a new area. Snapper are the main catch in the area and there have been less undersized fish being caught. Not many kahawai but some reasonable trevally are being caught, especially if using smaller (no 3) hooks and oily baits. Lately there has also been good fishing at the Hen and Chicks. Game fish are on their way, moving down the coast, and scallops seem to be plentiful and in good condition. Make the most of the good days: tight lines.

otel restaurants used to have a bad reputation of being overpriced with ‘average’ food, admits Tom Whitaker, the manager of Flames Comfort Hotel, Conference Centre and Restaurant & Bar. When he took over the management of Flames in Onerahi just over two years ago, he was determined to turn the restaurant into something locals would use time and time again. Following a simple business model of “reasonable food at reasonable prices”, Tom grew business at the restaurant by 50 per cent in his first year. It now caters for the wide variety of people living in Onerahi and surrounding suburbs. Flames Restaurant’s menu changes every three to four months, to cater for seasonal differences. This summer the Thai menu has been expanded, on request. “A lot of the local regulars were enjoying the Thai food that was there and asked for more,” he says. All the Thai meals are made using authentic Thai ingredients. Tom, and his Thai partner Bee Kumram – who is also a chef at the restaurant, know all about authentic Thai food: they own a second home in Thailand and are regular visitors. Another popular dish on the menu this summer is a smoky chicken salad, made with paprika and Cajun spices, and a ginger, lime and coriander dressing. However, the menu also features many “old favourites” including steak and deconstructed beef Wellington.

ReMakery focuses on reducing waste BY DENISE PIPER

R

educing and minimising waste by reusing old products is the key concept behind The ReMakery – an upcycle shop and community space set to open in central Whangarei. “We are aware of how much is thrown out because people done have the skills, knowledge and understanding to repair and fix things,” says Carina Dickson, the general manager of Habitat for Humanity Northland which is driving The ReMakery. “We also want it to be a social enterprise that puts a profit back into the community,” she says. Repurposed goods – everything from clothes, furniture and artworks – will be sold with profits going to Habitat for Humanity’s work creating homes for those in need.

It is a good fit, with Habitat already running a second-hand store in Kioreroa Rd, Carina says. “What we see often is stuff going to the dump that could’ve been donated to us or things that, if it had a simple repair, it would be fine.” The ReMakery provides a space for all sorts of community workshops, where people can learn how to make and repair goods – from making compost to home repairs. Once a month, a “RePair Cafe” will be held – where volunteer experts help teach people how to repair their belongings. “What really appeals to me is, if you’ve got something that’s broken, then someone will teach you how to fix it, and then you can take those skills and share them with others,” Carina says.

The project is well supported by the community, including sponsorship from Sky City and Whangarei District Council, plus partnerships with a number of organisations to run workshops. The ReMakery open day on February 16 will include a Kombucha workshop, a Sew Good community sewing workshop and a sausage sizzle to raise money for Habitat’s work in Fiji.

The ReMakery is on 3 Woods Rd, Whangarei (behind Flip Out). The grand opening will run from 9am to 2.30pm on Saturday, February 16, and the shop will run 9am-2.30pm each Saturday after.

WHAT TO ASK A REAL ESTATE AGENT

• Why should I hire you? Asking these questions helps you form a picture of the agent’s experience, knowledge and how they structure their business. “These days you’d expect an agent’s marketing plan to have an online focus that includes major property websites and social media. Find out what the marketing plan will cost and ask them to explain their rationale – you’re the one paying for

Helping make a crucial decision about your biggest asset

S

elling a home is a big life decision, both financially and emotionally. The journey can be a rollercoaster, which is why finding a licensed real estate agent you feel comfortable with is so important. “Remember, you’re looking for the person who you’re going to trust to sell what’s likely to be your biggest asset. Their success (or failure) will have a marked impact on your new life plan,” says Kevin Lampen-Smith, chief executive of the Real Estate Authority (REA). New Zealand has about 15,000 real estate agents who help people navigate big-deal transactions every day. “The trick is to find the one that will be best for your situation,” he says. “If you’re going to get the best out of your real estate agent – and they’re going to get the best price and conditions for your property – then you need to put the work in before you sign with anyone. That means basing your decision on more than gut feel or the fact that their office was easy to park outside,” Lampen-Smith says.

BUYING

this service, after all,” Lampen-Smith explains. Remember that you can negotiate on the marketing costs

You need someone who understands what it takes to sell a property like yours and a proven track record to show for it. You also need to feel comfortable with them personally – if you don’t find them pleasant to deal with, then buyers may not enjoy the experience either. If you’re not sure how to get the ball rolling, ask the agent the following questions: • What do you know about my neighbourhood? How are sales in this area and who is buying? • Do you work independently or with other agents? • What kind of advertising or marketing do you use – and which ones will work for my property? What extra marketing costs will I have to pay? • What are your commission rates? Are you open to negotiation? • Do you have testimonials or references from people whose properties you have sold in the last three months? • What do you recommend I do to prepare my home for sale?

SELLING

and commission – don’t be afraid to ask the agents if they are interested in an incentive-based commission, where they will earn more commission if they sell your property above a certain price. Once you’ve found the agent you think you’d like to work with, check them out on the Real Estate Authority’s (REA) online public register, which will tell you if the agent holds a current licence. This is important because it’s illegal to carry out real estate agency work without a licence and, if you deal with an unlicensed person, the REA will be unable to help you if things go wrong. When you’ve decided on an agent, the terms and conditions of your contract will be set out in an agency agreement that you both sign. This is a legal document, so make sure you get advice from a lawyer and that you understand your rights and responsibilities. xcitement is high at my place this summer. We “gifted” ourselves a spa pool! No, we’re not concerned about the power use, as we have increased our green credits by covering all our windows in the best possible window

dressing options, to minimise heat loss during winter. Visit us here at Frazerhurst to see how you can achieve this at your home. Our problem now is how to get the best experience out of our new appliance. After exhaustive research, we have decided we will put up screening from the prevailing wind and the hot summer sun. The New Zealand Weathermaster Aluminium Shutters range is going to be perfect! Elegant and durable, the range is designed to maximise indoor and outdoor spaces and blur the line between. What I really like is we will be in full control of the airflow and level of sunlight into the patio area, as well as being in charge of the level of privacy and security required. The shutters are made to measure and come in a variety of styles and colours. They also have great functionality with a range of functions:

SWEET SLEEP FOR THE ANXIOUS

Beds R Us Whangarei talks to Savvy readers about the connections between anxiety and sleep…

D

id you know more than 25 per cent of the population will suffer from an anxiety disorder at some point in their lives? More importantly, did you know that sleep is a natural anxiety-coping mechanism? When you sleep, your mind and body relax – so the next day you’re sharper, more resilient and better able to withstand life’s stresses. Unfortunately, the irony is that anxiety tends to make it harder to sleep. Sleep problems are extremely common in those with persistent stress and, in many cases, anxiety can trigger a cycle that makes it harder to sleep. If you’re anxious about getting enough rest to help you feel less anxious tomorrow, you end up too anxious to get to sleep. Below are some tips and ideas to calm the mind and help you get a good night’s sleep: • Make getting a good sleep a priority. Block out seven to nine hours for a full night of uninterrupted sleep and try to wake up at the same time every day (including weekends).

• Keep a journal beside your bed and write down any worries before sleep. Once your mind knows you’ve written a persistent anxious thought down, it tends to feel better about letting the thought go, knowing that it’s recorded in a permanent place. • Establish a regular, relaxing bedtime routine. Avoid stimulants like coffee, chocolate and nicotine before going to sleep, and never watch TV, use the computer or pay bills before going to bed. Read a book, listen to soft music or meditate instead. • Regular exercise is a great stress-reliever and will also help you sleep better. Limit your exercise to mornings and afternoons. If you’re still having problems with anxiety affecting your sleep, talk to your doctor. And, if you’re noticing yourself feeling uncomfortable while you’re trying to rest or waking up sore, find out more at Beds R Us Whangarei about getting your perfect bed for your perfect sleep.

PUTTING THE ‘GREAT’ BACK INTO OUTDOORS

A

s soon as the sun comes out or the weather warms up, we take a peek out the window to check the state of the backyard – or balcony, or whatever outdoor area you feel a sudden urge to spend time in. It may be in a need of a little attention, but turning your outdoors area into a useful, attractive place need not mean weekend after weekend of back-breaking work. A few simple fixes can have it looking fresh and appealing in no time, whether you’re after bold kerb appeal, a fun play space, a chic entertaining area or all of the above. First things first Take a good look around your outdoor space for anything that can be improved with a spot of quick maintenance. Does the driveway or the house need water blasting? Does the fence or deck need re-staining, does the hedge need trimming and the garden weeding? Clean up any areas of mildew or moss, fix any loose boards or tilting fence posts, and trim back any overgrown plants. Wash your home’s exterior with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash, and try Resene Moss & Mould Killer on your paths and decks. Beware of using a water blaster on your deck as it can fur the grains in the timber. A short amount of time spend tidying up will make everything look better and give you a blank, clean canvas with which to start. Just add plants Plants immediately make any outdoor area more pleasant to be in – they add shade, fragrance, colour and, in some cases, food. Even if you don’t fancy yourself as a gardener, opt for easy-care varieties such as succulents or hardy shrubs. If you’re short on space, choose plants in pots that you can move around and keep small. A vege garden is a good place to start, especially if you want to get the kids involved or you love to cook. There’s no need to keep veges confined to a square box in one corner of the garden. Tuck them in anywhere you have the right growing conditions. Herbs and small fruiting plants like strawberries are a good, easy-care choice when space is limited too. Try staining an old wooden palette with a Resene Colorwood shade of your choice or painting it in the Resene colour of your choice, and turn it into a wall planter with the simple addition of a few extra bits of wood. Lean or attach it to a fence or wall and fill it with mint,

The brick and Linea weatherboard house is the only display home in the new Kotata Heights subdivision, which boasts semi-rural and harbour views just minutes from the centre of Whangarei. The generous 200m2 home includes four double bedrooms, two living areas and an internal-access double garage. A key feature of the home is the “sizeable kitchen”, says Jennian Homes Northland general manager Jody Yakas. “Kitchens are such a key focal point in homes, a lot of the way people live and entertain revolves around this part of a home, so a lot of thought was put into designing the open-plan living around this space,” she says.

“We have included induction and gas cooking appliance options within the kitchen,” Jody says, “which should appeal to any budding MasterChef.” The focal point of the kitchen is the substantial Dekton island bench, offering plenty of space for perching on a stool without taking away space from the dining

Freshening up for the new year Alex Badham, Designer and Owner of www.gathered.nz

T

he summer holiday has been a time of indulging in the beautiful seafood that Northland has to offer and soaking up family time and days at the beach. To say that it has been a slow start to the year is an understatement. We took a break from all things Gathered over January but are now getting back into the swing of running a small business and raising a young family. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support for our Gathered Pop Up shop, which was open for the six weeks before Christmas. We had an incredible response from the local community and loved meeting some of our customers face-to-face. So, now the holiday period is over, what can we do to retain some of the blissful slow living routines we have started? The New Year feels like a great time to go through our homes with a fresh vision of how 2019 will be. We always tend to do a late summer clear-out at the Gathered house – it means that as we transition back into work, we are feeling refreshed and organised.

Hopefully you have had the opportunity to use some of your holiday/camping gear and have an idea of what was useful, what needed repairing, what you actually used and can gauge how to streamline one area of your home over the next week or so. Make it a goal to thoughtfully organise and de-clutter one space which has been in the back of your mind to do. This week I’m tackling the garage, wish me luck! Show me your results by sharing them with us @gatheredstore on Instagram and Facebook, we love to see your photos! One thing we especially love doing at this time of the year is dining outdoors. There’s something quintessentially Kiwi about eating BBQ beneath the stars while the kids run wild around the orchard or on the beach. Use all of your ‘special’ tableware to host a party for your nearest and dearest. Bust out the special glasses and linen napkins – if not now, then when? This is an amazing way for you to determine whether your kitchen may be due for a de-clutter next month… Until next time
