Upping sticks forcaravanlife

Kerry andKevin Heathhave livedfulllives,including varied careers, home-owning, almost alifetimeofrentingin NewZealand andoverseas, marriages,and ablended family including sevenchildren and19grandchildren.But last year wasparticularly tough when theirhard-earned savingsdestined to buytheir firsthometogetherwas denied by thebank andtheycould no longeraffordescalating rent. Then theylost theirbeloved grandson.Theyshare their storywithJodiBryant.

Relaxingonthesofaoftheir26ft newmobilehomeonwheels,Kerry andKevinHeathlookapictureof contentedbliss.Withinwalking distanceistheirnewbackyard–thepristine powderywhitestretchofUretitilappedwith sparklywater,andwithinreachingdistance,a blanktvscreen,whichhasremainedthatway formostofthesummer.

Butrewindamonthorsoandtheirlifestyle wasvastlydifferent.

“Whenyouliveinahouse,yougetupinthe morning,yougooutthefrontdoor,youshutit andgotowork.Youcomehome,shutthatfront doorandyou’reinsidethatblockallthetime,” describesKevin.

“We’dbeinourroutineofrelyingonthesix o’clocknews,andonourdevices–we’devenbe talkingtoeachotherunderthesamerooffrom ourdevices,”laughsKerry.

“We’vegotoutofourhumdrumroutinelife, thetvisn’tcommandingeverythingandwetalk toeachothernow.”

Theveteranrenters’mundanelifestylecame toaheadwhentheyrealisedtheirweeklyrent wasgoingupmorethantheirwages,theywere livingonedgewithquarterlyhomeinspections andfinallytheirbankloantopurchasetheir ownhomewasdenied.

“Rentwentup$20aweekeachyearbut wagesdon’tgoupanywherenearthatmuch,” explainsKevin.“Andifyoureportedaproblem withthehouse,yougetpresentedwiththebill.”

AddsKerry:“Youseetheseprogrammesontv aboutbadtenantsallthetimebutyoudon’tsee theonesaboutgoodtenantswhogetpenalised becauseofthebadagentsorlandlords.

“You’reonedgeallthetime,”saysthe professionalcleaner.“Butwejustworkedso hard.”

Thecouplemet20yearsagoonNZDatingin Aucklandwheretheywereraisingtheirfamilies. Kevin,originallyfromtheUK,hadfollowedhis parentsouttoPatauaNorthbeforegettinga buildingjobinAucklandwhere,withhiswife, raisedtheirfourchildrenintheirownhome, whichtheysoldafterseparating.Whenhe realisedhe’dneveraffordanotherhomebased onhisearnings,minusthechildsupport,heand KerrymovedtoAustraliatotryandgetahead.

However,itwasn’tsuccessful;following anaccident,Kerryhadtostopworkandthey werereducedtooneincome,whichsoonbegan eatingintotheirsavings.

Theyalsomissedtheirfamily,whichwas expandingintograndchildren,sodecidedto return.

“Wemadethedecisiontocutthestrings andjumpbeforewelosteverything,”explains Kevin,61.

KevinlandedajobascaretakeratKamo IntermediateSchoolwithKerry,56,often helping,lateralsobeingrecruited.Though

theylovetheirjobandworkingtogether, forthelasteightyears,theyfellintotheir monotonousroutine.

Havingalreadyapproachedthebankseveral yearsearlierforaloan,theytriedagain.They hadsavedadepositof$40,000,plustheirKiwi Saver,andweretoldthebankcouldlendthem around$325,000.

“Atthetime,youcouldbuyadoer-upperin certainareasinWhangāreiforthat,”saysKevin. “Iwas58atthetimeandtheysaiditwould needtobepaidoffinaboutsevenyearsby theageof65.Theywouldn’ttakeintoaccount Kerry’sage,wagesorsavings,everythinghad tobeinmynameasIwasapplyingforit.One bankeventoldmeIdidn’thaveacreditrating sowehadtogetacreditcard.

“Wehavebeencontinuallysavingand workingourbuttsoff–Kerrywasevenworking from7am-7pm.”

Fedupwithpayingpeople’srentandthreemonthlyinspections,thecouple,whomarried in2011,tookmattersintotheirownhandsand, latelastyear,purchasedacaravan.

“Wewantedtoownsomethingoutright.We lookedatcampervansbut,aswellasthebigger expense,ifyouparkupandsetup,thenrealise you’veforgotthemilkorsomething,you’vegot todisconnecteverything,”Kevinexplainsof theirdecision.

"Wesmile andlaugh alot more... Home is wherethe family is andthishas just lifted ourspirits.It’sfreedom.

Thecouplesoldtheirfurniture,stored sentimentalitemsandcondensedtheirlives intoa26ft2008SterlingElitecaravan,which theyhaveparkedupatUretitiforthesummer.

“Nowweownsomethingandhavesavings.

“Whatyouthinkissentimental,isn’treally whenyoubreakitrightdown.I’maphoto person,”addsKerry.

Andtheyhavecapturedplentyofphotosof whattheyciteasoneofthebestsummersoftheir livessurroundedbyfamilyandallthatmatters.

“Wealwayshadourhousesetupforfamily buttheynevercame.Ourfamilycomeuphere fromAucklandmostyearstothissitesowe havespentthesummersurroundedbythem. Thegrandkidswouldpopovertovisitallthe timeandsleepover,we’ddocolouringin,play

games,swimandplaycricketdownonthe beach,”smilesKerry.

Missingthough,washerfirst-borngrandson Cody,17,whodevastatinglytookhisownlife onFather’sDayduringlastyear’slockdown, followinglong-termbullyinganddepression.

“Hewasmybeautifulfirst-borngrandson withaheartfulloflove,”saysKerrythrough tears.“Hehadagreatheartandagreatsense ofhumour.Hehadalottolivefor.CodyBlazeis whatwecalledhimandhesweptthroughhere withCycloneCodyandhebeatthes***outof thegazebototellustokeepsmiling.”

Andtheyhave.

“Wesmileandlaughalotmore,”saysKerry. “Homeiswherethefamilyisandthishasjust liftedourspirits.It’sfreedom.”

Themuch-lovedcaretakersremainrealistic abouttheirlivingsituation.

SaysKevin:“Wintertimeisgoingtobe anotherlearningcurve,andpossiblyatrying timebut,it’sallstillalearningcurveforus.”

TheyplantobaseinacentralWhangārei caravanparkduringthewintermonthsand travelaroundtobeachsitesoverthesummer.

“Youcan’tstaypermanentanywhere,you canstayaboutthreemonthsinanyonespot,” explainsKevin.“It’sagypsywayoflife.”

“I’mafreedomgirl,Ilovethesimplelife,” addsKerry.

Buttheysayit’snotforeveryone.

“Itwouldn’tsuiteverybodyandthere’s alotofpeopledoingitjusttosurvive–they don’twanttodoit.Butwefindthepermanent

caravannersarejustsolaidbackandveryeasy totalkto.That’sanotherpositiveaspect,we’re gettingtoknowourneighbours,evenjusta simplethinglike‘Goodmorning’onpassing, makesadifference.

“We’vetalkedtoalotofpeoplewhoare enviousbutyoustillanswertopeople.We answertoSteveatthefrontgate,butthere’sno realstress.You’vejustgottobecourteousto people,that’swhatitboilsdowntoisrespect. Andagentsdon’ttreatyoubackwiththesame respect.”

Withtheirsavings,theyplantopurchase anupsizednewerversioninayearand,once theyarebothretired,explorethecountryinit. Fornow,theyaretakingeachdayasitcomes, adjustingtotheirnewnorm.

“Westruggledasparentsandtopaythe rentsforyearsandyoujustdon'thavethe moneytotakethekidsanywheresoit'snice tobebackherewiththembeingolderand havingthegrandchildren,toexperiencethat connectionandfreedomandjustcruisewith life.Nowwecanmakethosememories.

"Itissospecial,wearelovingit.There's beenlotsofloveandlaughter."

Fromfilmcostumestovintagetrading, restorationandrepairsareanessentialpartof herwork,andskillsthatarenecessarywhen buyingandcaringforolderitems.

ofourdreamsatafleamarket,onlytofind it’smissingabuttonorhasanoddstain.Or perhapsit'safamilyhand-me-downwith sentimentalvaluebutalotofwear.Witha bitofloveandattention,manyfaultscanbe repaired(effortthatpreventsagarmentbeing discardedaswaste).

Splitsintheunderarmseam;dependingon theageofgarment,ifthearmpitshavesplit alongtheseamitwillbeduetotheageofthe cottonthread,havingdeterioratedovertime fromperspiration,etc.Oncethegarmentis laundered,unpickthestitchingallaroundthe armpitandsewitbacktogether.

Howdoyougetridofthatmustysmellsome clothinghas? Definitelytreatyourretroandvintagewithcare.
