Editor’s Note What is this exciting feeling Whangarei? When I wander through town or walk the loop with my family on the weekend, I am sensing change. There is something happening in this city that makes happiness rise up from deep within, it gets me inspired again like living in an ever changing vibrant city many years ago. I look around and times are moving here. There is a renewed energy that is fuelling the fire to see change and bring back passion and pride to our hometown. Good things take time but we are at the stage now that the puzzle pieces are coming together to form one complete LOVE IT HERE picture. Look around at the paradise we live in. I was lucky enough to get away for a night recently and rent a seaside bach in Waipu. I stood on the deck overlooking Mount Manaia in the distance and the surf rolling in thinking, why do we travel overseas to tropical islands? I’m excited for what 2016 has in store and I can read the same feeling upon others faces as we welcome the change and breathe in the new. From the regular community events to the well-used walking tracks, Whangarei has a new feeling and I’m loving every step of the journey. Whangarei: Love it Here! Let 2016 be your new chapter.

Waipu - Learn 2 Surf
Chatting to Emma Harrington from Learn 2 Surf Waipu Cove about their latest yoga retreats fills me with peaked interest and motivation to get my name down. The combination of yoga, surfing and indulging in health and fitness seems to be a winner.
P
icture this: Waves break softly on the distant shoreline. You’re sitting on your yoga mat breathing in the sea air and clearing the cluttered thoughts from your mind in a safe circle of women. Rejuvenating your soul and touching base with nature again. Morning tea is served and nutritional advice passed on as you learn new ways to stay healthy. Health tips and recipes are discussed as you ready for the ocean and head out for your first (or fiftieth) surf lesson. Hours later, grainy salt covers your tired body, ready for the catered lunch from Cove Cafe and a few more Yin Yoga stretches to wind down for the day. From here there is the option of taking a guided coastal walk to top off the day, that is if you have more energy to burn.
Juggling three young grommets, Ryder (8), Ruby-Rose (6) and Asher (4), Emma and husband Daniel live their passion as a family and find fulfilment seeing others discover the love of surfing for the first time. “This is a natural extension of our family,” Emma says, “seeing people really happy is what it’s all about.” Some of the feedback from past Learn 2 Surf yoga retreats include, “Learn 2 Surf Waipu Cove (and Emma) put on the most fantastic day for us. I cannot recommend them highly enough. Welcoming, organised and on top of everything!” The family business started when Daniel, head of Physical Education and Health at Bream Bay College brought surfing into the curriculum. Inquiries for training flooded in and soon there were five weekly groups arriving for coaching at the local beach.

Soon Emma was qualified also, and now manages a team of talented coaches to inspire the 64 children who enjoy learning to surf on a weekly basis. Emma is planning another retreat this year and due to the seasonal nature of the sport will be anticipating three to four events over the summer months each year. Are You Being Served ...Well? BY KAREN MATICH POLWARTH DESIGN
Don’t expect to find a full length mirror in Polwarth Design’s changing rooms.
T
he last thing we want is to lock you inside a 5 by 5 cubicle at the mercy of your fiercely nurtured misconceptions!! Who’s going to
challenge your comfort zones in there, grab you a size down, nip the hemline up or suggest you ditch it because you’ve just put on 10 kilos???? And what about the ‘panel’ our glorious customers whose entrance has coincided with yours? How are they going to have their say when you’re jammed in the changing room?? They, the unsolicited voice of the public. Opening that door and venturing onto the shop floor can be a daunting experience for some (except Scorpios of course), so providing a comfortable environment where you feel visible and valued is imperative. It’s part of our shopping experience and makes the day such fun!!! It’s all about trust, experimenting with styles that test the boundaries, eliminating others, playing in the search for that perfect combination that makes you beam. As experts who spend all day dressing women, we have to know our stuff. Gone is the bored blonde bimbo perched on the other side of the counter, doing ‘selfies’ and texting madly. To survive, customer service is paramount and we have to be good, because your friends and family are going to be the first ones to tell you otherwise. We immerse ourselves in the clothing that we’ve ordered with you in mind. It’s almost like conception. New season garments roll in taking their places on the racks, little clones of the skimpy size 8 sample we scrutinised six months earlier in Ugg boots and merino jumpers. Garments that are hopefully varied enough in style, colour and size to flatter all body shapes, ages and personalities. And it’s our job to know every garment and who they suit - thank goodness for fashion parades!! For the independent shopper who values privacy in the changing room, colour and pattern are obvious standouts - most women have a good idea of what colour suits them and are drawn to these on the racks but how on earth does she decipher size, sifting through

the hundreds of garments on display? Without the help of the educated, it just about requires a mathematical degree. So you’re a size 12 are you?? Right. That will be a size 40 European, an 8 - 10 American - (good old ‘vanity sizing’), a size 10 Canadian (yes ‘vanity sizing’ again), a size 3 if you’re an eBay Ted Baker fan, a plain little ‘medium’ or you’re a OSFA (One Size Fits All), unless you’re shopping at Bradley Melville’s teen- “friendly” So Ho store - they just stock ‘small’. So in all - it’s not about what fits you – you’ve got a wardrobe full of that - it’s about what looks amazing on you and with thirty years’ experience, amazing is what you can get if you include us – just open the door… “If I need anything I just walk in and you dress me…” Joanna Ewenson

Evolution School of Beauty and Massage Gain a lifetime qualification “ We get a lot of feedback about how we are a bit of a family here”, says Yvonne Palmer, school manager at Evolution School of Beauty & Massage in Whangarei. “We are only a small specialist school and we get to know our students and their families really well.”
S
o not only can you learn some excellent skills which will last a lifetime, but you can also make some excellent friends who can also last a lifetime. Yvonne says its lovely seeing graduates keeping in touch on Facebook and meeting up even if they are overseas, they always catch up when they are back and they usually pop into the school to say hello. Graduates are always welcome back with open arms and never leave the Evolution “family. The courses offered at Evolution are short and no time is wasted with things you don’t need or will never use in the industry. Time is spent doing the things that are required and utilised. Courses run from as little as 12 weeks through to 21 weeks and there are a few different ways to study. You could start on a level 3 Beauty Consultancy course and work up to the level 4 Beauty Specialist and then onto the level 5 Swedish Massage course or you can just jump straight in on any of the levels. You choose. If you are not sure, the lovely team at Evolution School of Beauty & Massage are there to help and talk you through all the options. “There are some big changes happening right across every qualification on the NZQA framework this year,” says Lorna Clowes, Director. “What this means for us is that our short courses may well become much longer as of next year as we will have to fit in with the new qualifications as they are rolled out. So if you are thinking of training in this industry and you are a little time poor, then now is the time to train whilst the courses are
structured around school hours and families.” The next intake of students is Feb 2016 and places are filling up so don’t hesitate if you would like to apply. It’s not all about painting nails and faces though. Depending on which course you choose, you will learn about the body and how it works, the science behind some of the ingredients used in products, you will cover some business studies and when time allows there are guest industry speakers and presenters. You also get lots of hands on experience – you even get to work on real clients and of course, you get to have all the treatments yourself! So if you are a prospective student wishing to gain a lifetime qualification or even if you just fancy some pampering by the amazing students, give Evolution School of Beauty & Massage a call today on 09 438 6583 or email info@evolutionschool.co.nz. You can also pop in and have a look around– 115 Lower Cameron St, Whangarei. For more course information check out the website www.evolutionschool.co.nz.

our hair is a reflection of your general health which is why having healthy hair and a healthy scalp is important. A poor diet creates an imbalance of nutrients available to the hair roots. This leads to high levels of toxins accumulating at the hair root which often intensifies hair thinning. Rapid weight loss can also lead to temporary hair loss due to your body’s deficiency of essential vitamins and minerals. orgeous as you are and truly someone of grace and elegance, but sometimes when we look at our photos we wonder where it’s all gone. What we see in the mirror can be so different to what the camera shows us. So over the next few months I’m going to cover tips and tricks to look good in photos and how to capture the best version of you. Let’s start with the curse of many photos for men and women, young and old. The dreaded double chin is one of the main reasons so many of us duck for cover when it’s picture time. We all get it. We all hate it. You know that mysterious second chin that spontaneously appears anytime we’re faced with a camera. Why is that every time we say “Cheese” our neck comes up to meet our chin and the whole lot morph’s into wrinkles. The truth is that you don’t look like that in real life, so don’t believe it when you see it. And I’m going to tell you how to get rid of it for good! When we smile we instinctively tuck our chin in, lift our heads back and
widen our cheeks. This normal. But pair that with the intimidation of being in front of the camera, we tense up and it doesn’t look so good anymore. The remedy for this is to stick your chin towards the camera, pushing your head forwards and elongating the neck. Then tip your chin down slightly or bring your forehead forward. You will fell strange but trust me; it feels weird and looks great. From the side you can see that I am projecting my head away from my body. Yes, this in this view it looks bizarre but that’s not what the camera will see. The camera can only see from one angle and that’s all you have to worry about. From the camera’s point of view this will define the jawline and help hide everything a wee bit more. Many great photographers use this trick and it’s a stable of every model’s repertoire, so much so that Tyra Bank’s nicknamed the move “The Turtle”. It’s simple, easy to do and will make a huge difference to how you look in photo’s. Try it, you might be surprised at how well it works!

T
he clever design, well-proportioned spaces, smart use of materials and attention to detail have resulted in a superb home set in an equally beautiful two acre garden. The project got underway in 2002, when Roger and Jan started looking for a lifestyle block in the areas. “The real estate agent showed us this – it was chest high in grass but you could see the potential of being right on the river yet with an elevated house site,” Jan says. The first stage was to build a garage with a self-contained loft above as temporary living quarters, and to begin work on the land. Roger swears he dug hundred and hundreds of holes. “We’d buy trees from Auckland and locally, bring them home and dig more holes,” he says. Following the natural contours of the land, they established lawns and planted many natives and exotics, including the South African native virgilia, whose purple flowers are irresistible to parakeets. The buildings Jan and Roger wanted for the land were designed by architect Nick Traviss and once the loft was complete it took Roger, a former boat builder, two years to build the main house. The open plan living area with two sitting areas, a dining space and a kitchen is flanked on one side by a master suite with bathroom and walk in wardrobe, and on the other, accessed by a glassed walkway, two guest suites. The living area opens via stackers on to the big, curved deck overlooking the river.

The main house also contains an additional bathroom, small office space, concealed laundry and storage, and a spectacular loft area used as a library, filled with memorabilia and books old and new on every topic imaginable. This magic space is tucked under the seriously large, curved, exposed macrocarpa beams that support the roof. They had to be lifted into the space by crane and they give the house huge character, as well as balancing the richness of the jarrah floors below. Timber features are a standout of the house. All You Need To Know: Interior Design Trends For 2016 Trend No. 1 - Going Geometric
Armadillo, Resene Baltic Sea, Resene Rasputin, Resene Indian Ink Resene Balderdash, Resene Tangaroa,
We’re talking tiles!! Decorative splash backs have gone strong for a long time, but the trend is now gravitating towards more geometric patterns that feature fluid movement. But it’s not just tiles, cement and even wood can play a significant role in achieving this. Whether it is a splash back or an intricately patterned floor, fluid geometry is coming in strong. See the geometric tile ranges at The Tile Warehouse, 27 Commerce Street, Whangarei.
Trend No. 6 – Go Gold!
It’s not really NEWS anymore, but a lot of people are still getting used to it! Copper is in, but it doesn’t always go with everything, so will always be on the fringe. Gold is classic and will work for all seasons. In summer pair it with tropical greens, vibrant corals with fresh white. In winter, add rich navy or the darkest purple for a luxurious look.
Trend No. 2 - Mix Metallics and Metals
Trend No. 7 - Source Artisan Goods
The 1950s and 1970s are hot trends in fashion design collections right now, and it is no different in interiors. Midcentury Modern with brass, gold and metallic finishes are popular right now. Get ready to embrace some retro bling!! Worried it’ll look garish?! Tone it down by pairing it with natural and raw finishes like wood, concrete and marble.
Choosing artisan goods isn’t just about choosing something you like - it’s a choice to buy local and a choice to support your community. Embrace this trend, be inspired by local finds – buy locally made and hand crafted goods. From tassels to macrame and crochet, to pottery and glassware, to artworks in all mediums…there is sure to be something for you if you know where to look! Don’t be afraid to mix vintage and artisan items with mass produced goods – It’s perfectly ok to pair a Moroccan rug next to a Kmart coffee table, for example. Try these sources: www.felt.co.nz, www.etsy.com, Artisan Fair Whangarei or the Crafty People Markets Whangarei.
Trend No. 3 - Pretty Pendants.
While we still love a good chandelier, 2016 is the year for the statement pendants! Keep it traditional by placing over the dining table, or modernise your bedroom by hanging over each bedside table, and don’t forget to make a feature of your stairwell! Be brave, be creative, take a risk and have fun….they are replaceable after all!
Trend No. 8: Make it Sustainable
Trend No. 4 – Texture To Touch
Texture is the key to achieving an interesting interior. Layering different textures can add depth to your space. Think faux fur, suede and brushed velvet for cushions and throws, and organic cotton and linen bedding for bedrooms.
Trend No. 5 – Dramatic Colour
It’s all about the drama! Gone are the days of creating a cave-like setting. Bold, dark colour is now being used

Pacific: the Once and Future Ocean, Simon Winchester, HarperCollins Publishers, $39.99
for all ages
REVIEWS: ANNEMARIE FLORIAN, STORYTIME
Immortal Guardians (Spirit Animals : Fall of the Beasts #1), by Eliot Schrefer, Scholastic $16.95 Readers of the first series of Spirit Animals will be pleased to see this fantasy series begin again. It’s been several months since the events of The Evertree (Spirit Animals #7) and the world of Erdas is rebuilding after a destructive war. But trouble has reared its ugly head once more and Conor, Abeke, Meilin and Rollan must return to action. Writer Schrefer takes elements of Norse mythology and winds them into his tale, set in a parallel world where some children are able to summon their own special spirit animal. Quite the page-turner with lots of suspense and action, this will appeal to intermediate-age readers who are into fantasy-adventure and are inspired by the idea of kids and animals on a quest to save the world.
The Wonder Garden, by Jenny Broom and Kristjana S. Williams,WideEyed Editions, $39.95
A glorious, over-large hardback book that explores five dazzling habitats – rainforest, desert, coral reef, woodland, and mountain range – and the creatures that live there. Everything about this book sets out to impress – from the gorgeous cover, with its gold-embossed gates leading the reader in, to the fascinating facts and perspectives about the creatures that populate these diverse areas of the earth. The colours and artwork are luxuriant, and inspire the reader to pore over, enjoy and learn. Fascinating for those who are learning to appreciate the beauty and intrigue of the natural world.
This is where we live, we occupy a tiny sliver of land set in an enormous body of water, which covers roughly a third of the planet’s surface. Yet, what do we really know about this ocean? Have we even been paying it the slightest bit of attention? Simon Winchester’s ambitious tome sets out to at least get us to do that – to take notice of where we are and recognize what a huge taonga the Pacific is. Organised around 10 essay-chapters, he concentrates on developments from the middle of the twentieth century onwards, -- covering such disparate topics as coral reefs, cyclones, nuclear bombs, surfboarding, transistor radios and more --to arrive at a view of the Pacific that is as wide and expansive as the ocean itself.
Nonstop Nonsense, by Margaret Mahy with pictures by Quentin Blake, Orion Children’s Books, $14.95 A collection of fun poems and short quirky stories to chuckle over. First published in 1977, this new edition will allow today’s generation of readers to meet the man from Fandango (who pays a visit once every five hundred years), the word-wizard who casts a spell over the Delmonico family and many other unforgettable characters. Horrakapotchkin! – wonderfully witty nonsense from 2 very unforgettable characters themselves – our own Margaret Mahy and the brilliant Quentin Blake.
Clara’s Cookbook: Recipes that Reflect a Love and Respect for Animals, by Clara Donne, Taina Henderson, $19.95
Clara was just 6 years old when she made the decision to become vegetarian. With the aim of encouraging others to do the same, she’s put together this book of easy and tasty, meat-free recipes. Her message is simple: ‘you can lead a good life without killing animals – so why would you?’ The emphasis is on enjoying healthy eating with friends and family, without sacrificing animal lives. In addition to the tasty recipes, it includes clear advice on adopting a vegetarian diet with helpful information regarding the staples of beans, rice and grains. Headings and illustrations are bright and inviting, and the book is spiral-bound and printed on durable card, so will stand many years of use in the kitchen.
The Imaginary, by A.F. Harrold, illustrated by Emily Gravett, Bloomsbury, $19.95 A charming, funny and deliciously scary story featuring a clever little girl called Amanda, her imaginary friend called Rudger, and a truly terrifying, Hawaiian-shirt-wearing villain, Mr. Bunting. Full of emotion and adventure, Harrold’s writing has been favourably compared to that of Roald Dahl and Neil Gaiman; and Emily Gravett’s illustrations are suitably sinister and eerie. A suspenseful read-aloud for upper-primary level and older – 10 to 110 -- this is a book that you experience, so be prepared for moments of stunned and wide-eyed silence. Fantastically imagined, delightfully illustrated, deserving of a place on everyone’s bookshelf.
The RolyPoly Baby, by Catherine Foreman, Scholastic, $18.95 The roly-poly baby rolled on the floor. Then she rolled and she rolled and she rolled a bit more… Off the mat, past the cat, under grandfather’s chair, through the kitchen – and out the door! Uh-oh. Where is roly-poly baby going? The child-like illustrations have a gentle appeal for the very young and the words roll along just like the baby does, deceptively simple and with a faultless, freeing rhythm. This is a delightful read-aloud for babies and toddlers, and cements Catherine Foreman’s place at the forefront of children’s picture books in New Zealand. (Conflict of interest: I have professional connections to lots of books and authors, but I never rave about books I don’t love.)

INGREDIENTS • 24 slices soft white sandwich bread • ¼ head iceberg lettuce, finely shredded (about 1 ¼ cups) • 3 ripe tomatoes, seeded, juiced and drained • 3 slices bacon, cooked, drained and crumbled • 2-3 tablespoons mayonnaise • Salt and pepper, to taste
INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees. 2. Flatten each slice of bread with a rolling pin. Using a 2½-inch cookie cutter, cut 1 round from each slice of bread. Tuck the rounds into mini muffin pans and bake until lightly toasted, about 6 minutes. Cool for a few minutes then invert onto a baking rack and cool completely. (These can be made up to two days ahead of time and stored in an airtight container). * 3. In a medium bowl, combine the lettuce, tomatoes, bacon and 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise to bind (if necessary, add more mayo but take care not to make the mixture soggy). Season with salt and pepper. 4. Fill each toasted bread cup with the mixture and serve immediately. 5. Great to take to a bbq or for a quick lunch

Peugeot 208 Now Up To Speed
BY DAMIEN O’CARROLL
“The new engine is Peugeot’s excellent 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol turbo one that pumps out 81kW of power and 205Nm or torque.”
A
modern transmission and better engine make the littlest Peugeot a viable option When Peugeot launched the latest 208 in New Zealand, the car came across as a pleasant enough little vehicle, with a few glaring faults. Chief among them was that it was not only saddled with an automatic transmission with only four gears, but that it was a French automatic transmission with only four gears. Gear shifts were awful and largely unexpected, almost never happening when you wanted them to, and, if by chance they did, it was almost certainly accidental. Once again, an awful automatic transmission ruined an otherwise good French car. But things have suddenly improved for the 208, as the facelift has not only brought a few exterior changes, a couple of new colours and an increase in standard specifications, it has also netted the little 208 a new engine and, rather brilliantly, a new six-speed automatic transmission. Peugeot distributor Sime Darby Automobiles has taken the pruning shears to the 208 range on the release of the new version, cutting the number of models available to just two. Only the new engine and transmission are available. The new engine is Peugeot’s excellent 1.2-litre three-
cylinder petrol turbo one that pumps out 81kW of power and 205Nm of torque. Compared to the 1.6-litre fourcylinder naturally aspirated engine previously available in the 208, the 1.2 brings a slight 7kW decrease in power, but a fat 45Nm of extra torque. Not only does this slice a full second off the 208’s 0 to 100km/h time (now 10.9 seconds), but also drops fuel consumption to 4.1L/100km for the combined cycle. The 208 Active opens the range at $27,990 and comes standard with 15-inch alloy wheels, a tyre pressure monitoring system, front fog lights, manual air conditioning, LED daytime running lights and a seveninch touchscreen infotainment system. The 208 Allure tops the range at $30,990 and adds 16-inch alloy wheels, a cornering function to the front fog lamps, cruise control and a speed limiter, electrically adjustable and heated wing mirrors, automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, dual-zone climate control, a leather steering wheel, satellite navigation and a reversing camera. Autonomous city braking is an option on the Allure model and comes packaged with the mirror link function for connecting a phone. The Allure also can have an
optional panoramic glass roof and 17-inch alloy wheels, and the Active can be optioned with textured matt-finish paint (ice grey or ice silver) for $750. The matt paint finish is an interesting option that, unlike other matt paint finishes, Peugeot says requires no special maintenance. This kind of finish can look good on, say, a supercar, but on a small Peugeot it looks like they forgot to paint it. Still, the biggest improvement to the 208 has to be the fantastic six-speed transmission. Being hooked up to a great little engine helps, but having a sensible, modern number of gears transforms the 208 into a fantastic little car, around town and on the open road. The rev engine and slick transmission now make the most of the wonderfully agile platform the 208 sits on, making it fun to flick around a winding road, as opposed to frustrating. The smallest Peugeot also has a refined, remarkably supple ride for such a little car. The increase in equipment the facelift has provided and the engine and transmission it deserves turn the 208 into an attractive option. Amazing what a facelift can do.
