ummer for our family means re-connection.
The terms go by so quickly egged on by frantic early mornings, packed lunches, chores and juggling after-school activities. The kids travel a fair way to school now and by the time they get home, we are all tired. Our focus has had to change onto earlier bedtimes and balancing the down time to get through unscarred. Miss a good night sleep however and things are easily tipped upside down. The summer holidays allow for sleep ins, less rush, longer days, more talking, less pressure. Although it’s hard to juggle work into this break at times, all in all, this is a magic time of the year that I commit myself to soaking up with the kids. One day, the juggle won’t be there as much and I will notice that. Our days this month, are filled with loop walks, nature play, less technology, camping, trips to the dairy with our pocket money, bike rides and beach trips. I also talk to the Circus Kumarani group this month which offer another spin on summer fun for adults and kids alike. Look out for them in town this weekend! Slip, slop, slap, wrap!

Ten minutes with Abbe “I love that one of my main circus skills the Poi originated with the Maori people in New Zealand; there are poi spinners from around the world that come or want to come to New Zealand, just because they want to see the motherland of poi.” Who makes up the Kumarani Productions Trust? C
ircus Kumarani is a local community based organisation promoting fitness and all that circus entails. Circus training has been used internationally as a unique way of developing skills and expertise as well as for pure entertainment. The sport offers a wide range of opportunities that allow anyone to be able to find an area to excel. Circus Kumarani is based in Dargaville and organised by the non-profit organisation Kumarani Productions Trust. The Northland group focus their time and energy on circus and cultural workshops, gala shows, camping, swimming, fire spinning and a love of healthy food. They will be hosting the first circus festival of the year, the Northland Circus Festival, between the 6th and 8th of January at the same magical place again, the Waipoua Forest campground. Here they will offer a wide range of circus workshops for all levels and abilities, from object manipulation and juggling through to areal arts. Sharing skills and learning from other people is all part of the experience, this festival is for everyone. With stalls, displays, cultural workshops, live art creations, music and open stages spread throughout the festival, it’s a combination of social arts set to inspire! For updated information please follow them on Facebook or contact: admin@circuskumarani.co.nz / 09 439 5152 to book your tickets.
What drew you to circus practice? For me, like a lot of adults that start with circus, it was that I wanted to spin fire, so I got a pair of sock poi and went to one of Whangarei’s circus jams. It took me a lot of courage to go along as I felt really old and like I was going to make a fool of myself, but I was so wrong, everyone was so welcoming and encouraging. I never felt like I didn’t belong. After that, I moved on to other props and have never regretted turning up on that first day. I will admit I do have my now 10-year-old son to thank, as we drove past the circus jam and I was too nervous to go in, he said; “Mum, don’t let your fear stop you from doing something you enjoy.” I was never the sporty team player at school; I was a child that couldn’t even keep a hula hoop spinning on my waist. Now Hooping is one of my favourite things to do. I think it’s about forgetting the stereotypical stuff that comes with the word Circus. If I had a penny for every time someone says to me, “Oh you work for the circus, oh I could be a clown,” I would be very rich! Clowning is very hard to do; it takes so much skill and training. We want people to hear the word circus and think, fun, skills and other positive thoughts instead of clowns and animals.
I watch more experience students take new students under their wing share their circus skills with them. Worst experience is the injuries I’ve gotten from spinning poi. Circus poi are a lot heavier than your Maori Poi and when you spin poi you will always hit yourself. I’ve even watched guys practice with pillows tied to their pants. Touch wood, apart from a few bruises and the smell of singed hair, there has never been any major injuries. It does help that we treat safety of people very importantly and someone with experience is always there to spot you while you are learning. Where is a good place to start if someone if interested? Coming along to our Circus Jams are always a great way to have a go at different props and see if circus is for you. In Whangarei it is 4 pm on a Tuesday night at the Company of Giants, 116 Bank St. In Dargaville the Circus Jams are Thursday Night at 7 pm at the Townhall (school Term weeks only).
What are the health benefits involved? Circus, as a discipline, provides a variety of experiences and activities which facilitate positive emotional, physical, and mental health outcomes. Circus promotes a better quality of life using the experience of play, fun and creative expression. Your best circus story/experience? Nothing beats that feeling of performing in first of a crowd for the first time. I also love watching students grow in themselves in a positive way using circus skills.

elcome to sun, sea, sangria and summer sales! Once again it’s time to be reckless, to throw on that riot gear and prepare for some serious damage! As you are bombarded with tantalising slogans that promise unparalleled value for money, do you go under cover and head for the beach with your chilli bin? Or do you stop, take a deep breath and think, before charging forward relentlessly toward the ultimate shopping battleground? Because yes, in amongst the disarray and chaos that has brewed since Christmas, there will be absolute steals and irresistible bargains waiting to brainwash you out of your vouchers. There will be hype induced purchases that may prove unnecessary for the
remorseful buyer and the much awaited opportunity for stockpiling for the ‘just in case’ buyer. There will be purchasing opportunities to suit anyone who manages to negotiate the carpark. So Ladies – the whistle’s gone, you’re over the top & charging forward to reap your rewards… But not for long though, as just around the corner the ranks are regrouping, camouflaged behind ‘New Arrival’ slogans, waiting patiently for the Spring Coup, their time for the frontline to change, the calm before the Spring 2017 new storm. …and what will the fashion turbulence of Spring 2017 behold I wonder… when Vogue’s watchword for next season is ‘Audacity…’?

Kids fashion in New Zealand is on the up BY JESS CLARIS CLAR CL ARIS AR IS
10 | SAVVY
hen it comes to kids fashion there has always been a dilemma quality verses quantity. You may be team quality or team quantity, everyone shops a certain way for a reason and kids clothes are no different. For me as a parent of three, I am a quality shopper. I buy items that I know will wash well, get maximum wear and essentially I can pass on. Don’t get me wrong when it is a Kindy day we are all about quantity, due to the fact my kid is the one who has 17 costume changes through out the day! Children’s wear has become a lucrative business and people are loving it. From on-trend threads to vintage voile everyone is catered for in the ever growing online hub. Buy and Sell groups are popping up all over Facebook, this is allowing people to shop for quality at quantity prices. Kids fashion in New Zealand is on the up. Local Merino gurus, Little Flock of Horrors have graced the runways of New Zealand Fashion Week to promote the value and practical nature of New Zealand Merino. Other brands such as Bam + Boo and Goblin Baby wear promote the value of organic cotton and natural fibres which are perfect for our humid New Zealand summers and perfect for kids suffering from eczema, ultimately fashion with a purpose. Social media has changed the face of shopping as we know it. It has also brought into the forefront New Zealand brands who are determined to keep things locally made or sourced. The world of kids fashion in New Zealand has evolved into a well dressed machine. Local bloggers and influencers are on the frontline and use philosophies such as “Local is the New Black” and “Shop Small - Support Local”. This push to promote via these platforms has seen a huge shift in the way we as consumers buy. We see, we click the link, we buy.

What to wear to a Summer wedding
S
ummer wedding season is in full swing and if you have a few invitations on the mantelpiece, with them comes the dilemma of what to wear. Wedding wear is surely the most planned fashion attire, with the bride’s dress and her entourage’s planned out many months, and often years, ahead. If you are a guest at a wedding, you will usually have a long lead time to plan your outfit, too.
Some tips:
1. Never wear white. I would also avoid head-to-toe cream or ivory. It is the bride’s day and whatever your intentions with your look, it will seem like you are trying to upstage her which is never a good move. Instead, embrace colour. However tempting it is to stay with your faithful black, weddings are romantic, happy celebrations, so bust out your rainbow and feminine florals. 2. Clues to your outfit lie in the invite. Is it formal or informal? What is the setting and time of day? For example, a church wedding calls for more formal wear. Go for kneelength, or below-the knee midi dresses are aplenty this season and look super chic. If your dress has no sleeves, plan a jacket to cover your shoulders. A beach or family garden wedding can be more casual, but still plan for layers according to the season.
3. Consider footwear—you are likely to be on your feet a lot. Combine height and comfort with a chunky platform or wedge heel. These also work well for beach or garden settings when you do not want to plough the rass with stilettos. 4. Coordinate accessories with your dress. You don’t want to lug around your usual day bag so opt for a clutch or crossover body bag. Glitter is not just evening wear—a sequinned clutch can glam up a day dress into an event look.
5. Make your face up for the long haul: moisturise and prime well to set your base. Opt for a light but long wearing foundation and long-wear lipstick. Waterproof mascara and some travel make-up wipes will sort out your happy tears. — Annemarie Quill

HEALTH
Float your way I to looking and feeling great
f you’re feeling a bit lack-lustre and sluggish after one too many festive mince pies, consider floating your way back to feeling and looking fabulous this new year. If you haven’t heard of floating, it’s a form of total mind and body relaxation that is taking New Zealand by storm (a gentle, soothing kind of storm of course). The benefits of floating include improved sleep, easing of muscle tension, reduced anxiety, enhanced focus and creativity. How do these relate to beauty? Let’s look at some of those examples: Improved sleep – If this was a game of Family Fortunes, better sleep would be the top answer for ‘name something that makes you look and feel better’, right? Many people comment on the amazing sleep they enjoy post-float. And we all know that a good sleep doesn’t just reduce the under eye bags; it helps us think clearly and makes the day run more smoothly. And what else will be smoother? Our foreheads, because we won’t be so grumpy! Easing of muscle tension – As you relax and unwind in the pod, so do the knots in your muscles. People leave the float room as if they’ve left years of tension behind them. And it shows in their faces – they look younger and more care-free. You’d pay a lot for a foundation that does that! Reduced anxiety – Floating in the pod elicits the relaxation response – cortisol levels decrease and endorphins increase. You’ll feel happier. You’ll look happier. You might employ one of those Mona Lisa grins that get everyone wondering ‘just what has she been up to?’ The last big beauty benefit from floating is that, while you’re relaxing in the warm water, your body will be absorbing the magnesium from the natural Epsom salt that’s in the water. Granny did know best – Epsom salt makes your skin feel softer and smoother, aids with detoxing (those mince pies again!) and volumises your hair as a final bonus.

frustrating it can be when even after healthy eating and exercise that stubborn little area still won’t budge! That’s why after extensive research and training, we introduced our body shaping treatment - ChillSculpt. We were the first to bring this body shaping technology to clinics nationwide and since then, have performed over 1,500 treatments AND recently won Best Treatment at the Bauer Media’s Best in Beauty Awards! WHAT IS IT AND HOW DOES IT WORK? ChillSculpt is a solution for reducing stubborn fat; the kind that doesn’t seem to go away no matter how hard you diet and exercise. ChillSculpt uses cryolipolysis technology to freeze and reduce fat cells. Once the cells are treated, they die and are naturally metabolised through the body, resulting in reduced fat tissue in the treated area.

The treatment feels quite unusual, but any feelings of discomfort generally only last the first few minutes until it’s numbed from the cold - then you can relax, sleep, or read. For best results, we recommend clients have 6-8 treatments, 5 weeks apart. WHEN WILL YOU SEE RESULTS? Results vary, some clients start to see results as early as 3 weeks after their first treatment! In general people start to see results a few months into their treatment plan, once the fat cells have died and have been metabolised. WHY IS CHILLSCULPT PREFERRED OVER OTHER BODY SHAPING TREATMENTS? • Safe and non-invasive: Other body shaping methods such as liposuction come with surgery risks and a long recovery time. • Affordability: A one off treatment is $450, however this cost is reduced on our treatment plan. Plus, we also offer a range of beauty rewards, and payment options including Q Card. • Quick & easy: Treatments take less than an hour to complete. Healthy Summer Hair Want beautiful hair this summer? Protect your hair by following our Tricholgists 10 top tips to make your summer hair shine. 1. Limit the damaging effects of sea salt and chlorine. Rinse
your hair in tap water before taking a dip in the ocean or pool. Hair can only absorb a certain amount of water so wetting it first prevents chlorine or sea salt from penetrating hair strands and causing damage.
2. Let your hair be loose and natural. Take a styling break over summer and leave your hair natural. If wearing your hair up cools you down make sure your hair is not tied too tight. Low and loose ponytails are best to prevent tugging on hair follicles.
3. Protect your hair and scalp - just like you do for your skin.
A wide-brimmed hat will protect your hair from UV damage and prevent your scalp, face, neck and ears from sunburn at the same time.
SPF or run your fingers through your hair after applying sun protection to your body.

to give your hair (and face) the extra protection it needs from harmful UV rays.
your hair but it also promotes hair growth. Heat boosts blood circulation which helps hair growth, so when the weather is warm your hair will grow slightly faster.
5. Drink lots of water. Your scalp, just like your skin can dehydrate so remember to drink plenty of water to keep you and your hair healthy.
6. UV protection. Apply UV protection to your hairline and hair part if it is widening. If you have patches of thinning hair or bald spots make sure you have these covered with sun protection.
7. SPF hair mask. Apply a protective hair cream containing
8. Head for the shade. Always lay with your head in the shade
9. Conditioning treatment. Prevent dry brittle hair by washing your hair straight after a day in the sun and use a good conditioner to keep your hair moist and soft.
10. Easy on the brush. Use a wide toothed comb rather than a brush when detangling wet hair. When your hair is wet it can stretch up to 30% of its original length. For more hair advice visit www.cliveclinics.co.nz or phone 0800 40 42 47 to book a consultation with one of our Trichologists.

New treatment for dry eyes What is the function of your tears? Tears are the moisture layer that covers your eyes. They protect your eyes against microbial, allergic and traumatic aggression, and help to preserve your vision. They are essential for both comfort and health.. Your tears are composed of three layers which protect your eyes: 1. A superficial thin oily layer which is composed of lipids produced by Meibomian glands (located along the edge of the eyelids). These lipids, delay the evaporation of tears. They behave like a thin oily layer on water: oil prevents water evaporation. 2. A middle thick aqueous layer which is composed of water produced mainly by lacrimal glands that are situated in the upper eyelids. This layer carries essential nutriments and oxygen to the cornea. 3. An innermost mucous layer that helps the film to both adhere to the eye and assure its correct distribution.
Meibomian Glands Healthy Meibomian glands secrete oil with each blink of your eyes to keep your tears, and with them your eyes, from drying out. If these glands stop working properly, your eyes will dry out very quickly, and can become red, painful and inflamed. Common symptoms of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) include: • Dry eyes • Red, inflamed and burning eyes • Itchy eyes and eye lids • Sticky eyes with mucous secretions, sometimes eyelids may be stuck together. • Excessive eye watering • Eyes that are sensitive to light • The feeling that there is something in your eye, even if nothing is there.
• Frequent or recurring Styes I Chalazions • Blurry vision that comes and goes Because many of these symptoms are the same as other common eye diseases, an examination of your eyelids and meibomian glands, by a qualified Optometrist/ Ophthalmologist is necessary to determine if you suffer from MGD.
Treatment In the past treatments, have included artificial tears, eyelid warming, eyelid massage, lid margin cleaning, Blephasteam – hot moist goggles. Now added to available treatments, is Intense Pulse Light Therapy, IPL. The IPL machine uses sequenced light pulses to stimulate the meibomian glands to return to normal function.
We recommend this treatment as the best solution available for dry eyes. The procedure is cumulative, so for maximum results 3-4 treatments are necessary. The treatment itself is straight forward, your eyes are covered with goggles and protective gel is applied around your eyes. The treatment is on your cheeks close around your eyes. You will notice a warm sensation and bright light and a feeling like a rubber band being flicked on your skin. You can resume normal activities immediately after the treatment - making IPL a quick and painless solution to your dry eye discomfort. The IPL treatment will be available at the Eye Centre Primecare in 2017. Please phone us to arrange an appointment to discuss whether IPL can work for you.

The only New Year’s resolution list you need….. Its nearly New Year’s resolutions time! Again. Sigh. Many of us wonder if we should even bother…. Some of us do get excited about the New Year as we start it with a clean slate. It’s like the beginning of a new race, one that begins in January and ends in December. This coming New Year, what goals would you like to achieve? Would you like to be healthier? Would you like to be stronger, fitter, have more energy? What would you like to weigh? Would you like to look and feel better? I’m fairly sure we would all like to improve on all of those life-enhancing qualities. The trouble is, even with the best of intentions the enthusiasm to make healthy changes tends to fade once we realise we can’t change everything overnight. You may have noticed that many resolutions or goals seem to be “all or nothing”? You start off red hot and fired up and then a glitch occurs and it all goes to hell in a handcart. That’s because life isn’t perfect, stuff happens to get in the way of our schedules and because rigid resolutions can only exist in a perfect schedule – it gets all too hard, all too quickly. Want to make this coming New Year different? Rather than full out resolutions that are likely to fail, why not take this opportunity to make small resolutions right now for better health and wellbeing that will last forever! Bottom line, we’re all a work in progress, so it pays to keep things simple. Set Your Intentions for the Day First thing in the morning, check in with yourself for what you want to achieve for the day, review what is important to you. Not a huge list, just the basics.
2017
Pack a Lunch You’re Excited About If you’re packing lunch for work, don’t be all like, “the mixed greens will be satisfying”. They won’t, so get real! Add some protein, some light cheese, nuts or seeds – yummy, satisfying texture that will add crunch, taste and deliciousness. Forget that “all or nothing” mentality that causes so many people to fall off the wagon before they get very far down the track. Exercise Whenever You Can Walk more, park further away, get busy outside, and include more incidental activity throughout your day at every opportunity. Just DO something. Aim for Progress Not Perfection Always, always try and do a little better. Once again, broken record here, not the “all or nothing” – just a bit better than you did last week or last month. And don’t forget to stop and enjoy the achievements along the way, and pat yourself on the back for all that you’ve done so far. Habits Not Motivation And yes this is another of my broken record moments. Habits make for positive change. Motivation fails you when you’re too busy trying to live your life and all those glitches keep getting in the way. Take a little time to consolidate small habits and keep on keeping on. Focus on Health Not Weight Rather than grandiose statements about dropping large amounts of weight which doesn’t result in long-term change, instead, approach your weight loss goals with more specific results in mind for example, improved health, increased
BY CAROLYN HANSEN fitness, strength and energy or feeling happier. That way losing weight will be an added bonus rather than the driving force and you will make sustainable changes to your diet and lifestyle for long term success. Drink Less Alcohol Reducing your alcohol consumption is one of the best things you can do for your health. Even moderate consumption of alcohol has been linked to an increased risk of cancer. Drinking less by default assists all other New Year focuses by giving you the clarity and motivation to improve your health and happiness. Most people can agree that they feel better with less or without alcohol in their lives. It’s an added expense and it dulls your shine – not to mention the numerous detrimental effects it has on your health. Eat Less Packaged Food and More Real Food This coming new year look at decreasing your reliance on processed and packaged foods and look at eating more REAL food. More quality protein, more healthy fats, more healthy carbohydrates and so on. Real/whole foods not only contain nutrients but also enzymes, necessary for every chemical process in the body. These enzymes can only be found in whole, natural foods. If you have gotten lazy with meal preparation a great resolve is to get your butt back into the kitchen preparing meals from scratch. I hope that your little inner voice (the healthy-minded one) is calling out to you! Is it saying? “Go for it! Achieve your health, fitness and weight goals once and for all this coming New Year - bite the bullet and reach your dreams! Get healthier! Get fit! Get freakin’ awesome!
Look after yourself today, and live all your tomorrows better. The arrival of a new year always give a jolt to the mind and body. Time is passing, and the list of things you wanted to do, were going g to do and didn’t rise up to greet you with new resolve to get it right this year. It only makes sense to put an active lifestyle on that list, because over the years whatever else you need, you’re going to need d that body.

Taking a fresh approach monthly motivations for 2017
J
BY CORINNE AUSTIN
ust like that 2017 is thrust upon us. And whilst the commotion of festive and holiday celebrations is still very familiar, we become aware that we have a sparkling new clean slate on which to plan and plot our next journey around the sun. A new year delivers potential and opportunity galore. It excites us, energises us, and can promptly boost levels of motivation and enthusiasm. This new energy promotes New Year’s Resolutions to be asserted by many. We all do it; we all step into a new year daring to stretch beyond our current endeavours with some magical level of resolve to do something different, do something better, or do more than the year behind us that’s now been left for dust. We start off with a hiss and a roar, but all too soon we get whipped onto the rushing wheel of life, where chaos reigns and ambition wanes, where routines flow, yet new goals slow. Many of us become inconspicuously reunited with groundhog day which snatches back the controls and rudely dismantles the healthy New Year’s Resolutions we had set for ourselves – no matter how devoted we may have originally been to them. Take charge!! Set yourself up to conquer and succeed by tackling the new year head on with a fresh new approach. Instead of New Year’s Resolutions let’s create ‘Monthly Motivations.’ Monthly Motivations encourage us to choose one health, fitness, or wellness element to focus on per month. The beauty of Monthly Motivations is that we have the freedom to choose what our monthly focuses will be, and they needn’t be cumulative. By simply committing to making a change for a short period of time (one month), you never tumble completely

Take the stress out of your home with these minimalist design tips
S
tress is a pretty big part of life. In fact, according to the Australian Psychological Society, one in five adults claims that stress affects both their physical and mental health. Though the frustrations of your job can’t necessarily be helped, redecorating and decluttering your home can certainly take the stress out of your home life (once you are finished, of course!). Many homes around the world suffer from a massive amount of clutter and disorganisation, which means they are tricky to manage. By renovating your home with a minimalist approach, you are taking out many of those little hassles.

By reducing the amount of random stuff you have around your living room, bedroom, garden or anywhere else in the home, you could be creating a more peaceful, relaxing space. Without all the clutter, your home could be far easier to clean each week, meaning you can build up the motivation to do so far easier and more regularly. A decluttered home will be easier to sell or rent out, too, if you’re a designer looking to help with a house sale. Nobody really wants to move into an area filled with someone else’s belongings, but an intelligent, sensible home with plenty of open space is far more appealing. Here are some minimalist tips to start you in the right direction.
HOME TRENDS
M M E U R S N I G V S A S
Declutter In a messy house, the undeniable first step is to declutter. There are a number of different ways you can tackle the many piles of junk around your home, so you’re going to have to figure out what works best for you. You could, for example, try to tackle the situation in baby steps. This will mean attacking a small area each day, or as regularly as possible, and tidying it to completion. Then the next day you tackle another small area until the job is done. Alternatively, if you have the time then set aside a couple of hours and tackle your house in larger chunks. Follow the same method as above - attacking one area at a time - but do it for longer. If you keep up the regularity then you’ll be finished in no time! What do you do with the things you have decluttered? Sell them and use the money to help pay for your decorating, or donate them to a charity store or friends and family.
Furniture You don’t need an excessive amount of furniture. In fact, it only blocks up floorspace and closes a space up. In a living room, you really only need a sensible lounge suite, a minimalist coffee table (nothing too fancy) and an entertainment unit that is not overly elaborate. You might want a tidy rug as well, for wooden floors. A bedroom only needs a bed, a side table (or two, if required for both sides), and a dresser of sorts. A wardrobe should be able to contain the rest of your belongings, and if it can’t then you may have too many and need a wardrobe clean out. Don’t forget your garden, either. It doesn’t need 50 different ornaments lying about it, and any equipment left out should be put away - both for space saving and safekeeping.
12 MONTHS INTEREST FREE EVERYDAY*
Colours Colours don’t need to be over indulgent. Muted, sensible and contemporary hues work best, though nothing in excess. Straight white and black, or swap black for dark grey, is a common feature of minimalist homes, utilising white walls - such as Resene Black White and Resene Sea Fog, and black features - such as Resene Black or deep grey features - such as Resene Foundry. You can add subtle hints of colour through artwork on the wall, a vase on the coffee table or cushions on the lounge suite. Remember: You want your home to be free of stress, and an open-aired feel will help you achieve this. Parting with your treasures can be hard, but you’ll feel much better for it.

Kitchen design tips T he layout of your kitchen depends on your personal habits. If you’re short of time in the morning, you want everything you need for breakfast within easy reach. It’s easy to minimise the number of steps you have to take in your kitchen. By using ergonomic solutions, you have everything immediately to
hand.
FLOORING Contrary to popular belief, flooring is easy to do after a kitchen is installed. Make sure that the grain is not so rough that it picks up all the dust, or not so smooth that you fall head over heels every-time you do the dishes.
DISHDRAWERS Consider having two single dish drawers either side of the sink. That way it won’t matter so much if you forget to empty last night’s dishes, you’ll still have a clean drawer to put your breakfast dishes in.

Kneading Soap is like playdough for the tub -- lets you be creative and get clean, while you recap the day’s activities. If it’s too hot or too cold, too wet or just one of those days when you prefer to stay in, there are still lots of activities you can do indoors as a family. Watch a favourite movie, complete a jigsaw puzzle together, or play a board game. Anagram : the ingenious game of juggling words is a fast and furious word game for anybody school-age and over.
Players compete to collect as many words as possible, either by using new letters as they’re revealed or by spotting anagrams and poaching opponents’ words. More deliberation is necessary in Ex Libris : the Game
of First Lines and Last Words. Players must mimic different writing styles and historical periods, and trick their opponents into believing the ‘first lines and last words’ they manage to pen are just as good, maybe better than the real thing. Or if there’s just the two of you, why not try the ancient game of Mancala, where the target is to count and capture as many gems in your store as you can, while also blocking your opponent from doing the same. Players must try to plan 2 or 3 moves ahead, since planning ahead is essential to victory – so great for developing those strategic thinking skills. A winning combination of compassion, friendliness, great food and coffee are the heart of this local cafe
I
t’s always been a passion of ours (Alan & Jude) to own and operate a type of business in Whangarei where we are involved in the community providing a service that gives us the opportunity to blend and communicate with the people of our beautiful city. A café was ideal! We spent months doing a feasibility study around New Zealand to help us put together a business plan and find the perfect premises in the right location. What we found was ideal, ticking all the boxes, a colonial style building, large kitchen, a beautiful courtyard and the ability to seat 120 inside and out with Al Fresco dining. Combining our business and management skills with Helen’s café/hospitality experience, Essence was born October 2008. Our goal was and still is, to be the café of choice for the local community, business people, tourists, students and children. Whilst our core purpose is for delivery of quality service of food and beverage, our uniqueness is our emphasis on providing an environment of friendliness, compassion
and a safe relaxing place to be. The size of our premises enables us to cater for tour buses, special occasions…ie anniversaries, birthdays, graduations and weddings. Alan spends most of his time chatting to customers. “I enjoy people. My job is communicating with our customers. If they come in sad, they walk out happy after good conversation, food and coffee.” Many tourists have been encouraged to stay in Whangarei and enjoy our amazing bush and beautiful beaches. Many customers share their stories/personal issues with us and as we are mostly Christians, we offer prayer as part of who we are. Essence donates and supports…… • Cancer Society • CAP (Christians Against Poverty) • Adopt A Child (Gledja a lovely girl from Albania) • Various Community Outreaches None of this has been possible without our amazing, hard-working staff, who just love it when we are busy! And most importantly our lovely friendly customers!
Comments from our Head Chef Carl Worthington….. “Being a part of the team at Essence for the last 8 years has been privilege and an incredible journey. Essence is more than just a café, I see it as a central well where many people from all levels of culture, business and faith come to be refreshed with great food and coffee by our warm and friendly team. I have enjoyed making our legendary eggs benedict Essence style, pulled pork, Texan beef and Smokey/spicy chicken soft taco’s. Alan and Jude have been really supportive of my extra-curricular dreams and passions including community outreaches, raising funds for wells overseas and an actionpacked trip to India with TEAR fund NZ. On top of all that I am really appreciative of the great customers who continually support us and have let us into their lives. We are blessed”.

Holiday Park takes guests for a ride – on horses
A
pet horse isn’t the most usual holiday companion but a Northland holiday park has opened its doors to these equine friends. Kauri Coast TOP 10 Holiday Park has just opened what it thinks could be New Zealand’s first equestrian centre at a holiday park. The centre features an Olympic sized riding arena, paddocks and yards, offering riding, tuition and stables. Chris and Jane McComb bought the 2ha park three years ago and have since set up a steady programme of improvements, recently earning them a Top Service Award in the TOP 10 Holiday Parks’ annual awards. Their new equestrian centre caters for riding holidays where people can bring their own horses and riding lessons are available. It will also have up to four horses of its own for beginners. Maru and Xena are the first in their stable. “Our guests are loving the experience and I know the horses did too. It’s great for guests to be able to combine a holiday with this sort of activity as well – they can ride as much or as little as they want. Maru and Xena are very gentle horses and are great with people learning to ride. They’re very patient.” The park saw an opportunity to offer lessons to their guests, as well as providing facilities for those who want to bring their own horses on holiday with them. Over time the enterprising couple has transformed an adjoining uncared for piece of land into the Equestrian Centre. Jane is a keen horsewoman and has an international coaching certificate as a riding instructor. Having been around horses most of her life, providing riding lessons and horse livery seemed the ideal way to connect further with guests and make their stay extra special. “Pets are part of the family and more and more people travel with their animals; horses should be no different,” Jane says. “Guest can enjoy some beautiful farm rides or take advantage of our arena, jumps and professional tuition.” During the busiest month of January, about two thirds of holiday makers are from Auckland and Northland while the rest of the year is a mix of international and New Zealand visitors. The park features 100 powered and unpowered sites, together with 11 cabins/ motels catering for about 40 people.

hangarei Art Museum – Te Manawa Toi is pleased to present the 2016 White Box Black Cube Exhibition ‘Partial Loss’ by artists Cathy Tuato’o Ross and Ellen Smith. In a world full of stuff, it can be hard to distinguish between what matters and what doesn’t. Making decisions about what to keep (or not), and what has value (or doesn’t), is troubling. Not all belongings that are kept ‘spark joy’. Many things are stored or displayed that may not be treasured. They could have become clutter, may cause anxiety, or feel like a burden or responsibility. Perhaps time or transfer of ownership has caused the objects to become separated from their stories. In this collaborative exhibition Ellen Smith and Cathy Tuato’o Ross have been curious about the shifting relationships between objects and meanings, and bring some possible solutions to the problems of accumulation, excess or inheritance to the gallery. Learning from photography, in which three dimensions are reduced to two, Smith and Tuato’o Ross experiment with reducing volume, through compressing, flattening and even cremating.
IMAGE CREDIT: C Tuato’o Ross and E Smith, Exercise in Reduction: Cremation Letter-II, 2016, photographic print. The Community Shadow Collection Project, begun at the Geoff Wilson Gallery and Whangarei Museum, is also an important part of this exhibition. Over 50 shadow photographs present a graphic yet ethereal picture of our inherited material culture. There is an open invitation to all members of the community to participate, by attending between 11am-2pm on one of the three collection days - December 14, 2016 and January 11 and 25, 2017. Please bring an object with you that has lost something - it’s original owner, it’s value or it’s story for example. The artists will photograph its shadow which will then be added to the exhibited Shadow Collection.

– Student, Bachelor of Applied Arts “During my last year of school I did an art course here at NorthTec once a week – and I was hooked. Now I get to do something I love every day, and even if I’m doing aspects I don’t enjoy, I can see their necessity. I didn’t have a plan before whereas now I know applied art is my future. “Here I’ve been exposed to sculpture, printmaking and lots of different media which can be a challenge because they are all new, but it’s also what I’m yearning and learning for. We’re all exploring who we can become and the tutors are skilled at getting the most out of each of us. They feel more like colleagues than tutors – wise colleagues. “This course will get me qualified for jobs and industries I may want to be part of. In these early days of exploring, I’m so far drawn to art therapy or to getting some experience at Weta workshop.”

MOTORING
New Impreza A look to the future
T
HE NEW SUBARU Impreza recently introduced to New Zealand motoring journalists provides a dual preview of Subaru’s future product plans. The local launch comes two months ahead of the fifth generation Impreza hatchback going on sale - from lateFebruary - in 2.0-litre Sport specification. And the all-new Subaru global platform that underpins the Impreza is also the first sample of the architecture that will deliver next generation XV, Forester and WRX models and also provides the platform for Subaru’s move into hybrid vehicles. The global platform will be stretched to deliver the next Outback and Legacy models. The Impreza is estimated to be 95 per cent new while sticking to the familiar recipe of a 2.0-litre boxer engine and symmetrical all-wheel-drive format with Subaru’s Lineartronic continuously variable transmission. The new Impreza has slightly larger dimensions and a significant boost in technology and finish quality - including the introduction of Subaru’s stereo camera-based Eyesight driver assist system. Pricing won’t be confirmed till early February. The current generation Impreza hatch is priced at $29,990. Subaru has penned one of its more cohesive recent designs for the new Impreza with a sophisticated look that includes a wider body while 17-inch alloy wheels become standard in New Zealand. Body length has increased by 45mm while the wheelbase is 25mm longer. The most significant change is a 35mm increase in width to provide gains in shoulder room while rear seat headroom and legroom have also increased. The body construction achieves significant gains in chassis rigidity and the first driving impressions reveal the

Impreza has a premium small car feel. Its improved ride quality and accurate steering combine nicely with the surefooted poise that is a Subaru AWD hallmark. Subaru has continued the deployment of direct injection across its boxer engines for the new Impreza. The latest 1995cc boxer has a raised 12.5:1 compression ratio and now develops 115kW at 6000rpm (up by 5kW) while peak torque is unchanged at 196Nm but arrives slightly earlier at 4000rpm (200rpm lower). There are refinement gains and weight saving improvements within the Lineartronic transmission which has an auto stop-start function and an additional seventh ratio for manual shifting. Combined cycle fuel consumption falls from 6.8-litres per 100km to 6.6L/.100km. The Impreza’s more sophisticated exterior is matched by a premium cabin that is a substantial shift from the look and feel of plastics and harder surfaces in the current model. A new generation 8.0-inch colour touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto is the focal point while metallic detailing, soft texture surfaces and carbon fibre inserts complete the look and suggest the new Subaru platform will comfortably also make the transition to more expensive XV and WRX models. The New Zealand range will comprise a single 2.0 Sport specification that includes dual-zone air conditioning, tyre pressure monitoring, premium cloth trim with leather trimmed steering wheel and gear shift lever, front fog lights with integrated LED daytime running lights and push button engine start. Other standard highlights include seven airbags, a sixspeaker audio system with Bluetooth and USB connectivity, an electronic park brake, reversing camera, height adjustable

driver’s seat, 60/40 split folding rear seat and rear privacy glass. Introducing the third generation Eyesight system into the Impreza introduces adaptive cruise control with brake light recognition, pre-collision braking assist and steering assist, driver alert fatigue warning and lane departure warning. The Impreza plays a key role as Subaru’s entry level model achieving about 300 annual sales. If Subaru New Zealand can secure increased supply it aims to grow Impreza sales to 500 annually by 2018. “While it will remain a limited production model for New Zealand in order to achieve our special edition production run price equation, we are confident that come February 2017 when initial stocks arrive, we will have a ‘best value’ vehicle,” said Subaru of New Zealand managing director Wallis Dumper. Subaru of New Zealand is on target to set a new sales record this year, achieving more than 2600 sales for the first time. It’s a 15 per cent gain for the brand in a passenger car market that looks set to finish the year about 8 per cent ahead of 2015. Almost half of Subaru sales are the latest Outback but the brand has also achieved growth with its XV, Forester and Legacy sedan.

Our Loop Out and About
I
t’s our loop. It’s here for the mother who has had no sleep, all she wants to do is cry out to a trusted friend and breathe in some fresh air, to be outside the four walls of her home, then everything will be right with the world. It’s for the professionals in their lunch breaks, dedicating themselves to choosing exercise over staff rooms and finding their second wind for the long afternoon shifts. The loop is for children with bikes and scooters, to get out in nature and off the screens. To stretch their legs and put smiles on people’s faces as they whizz past grinning from ear to ear. It’s for the runners, setting themselves a personal goal to smash out day by day. The shadow of determination sitting on their shoulder, their best friend and their worst enemy.
It’s for the Nana’s and Great Nana’s, to come down and enjoy the city without the hustle and bustle, To meet with friends and family week after week and take some bread for the ducks, their camera and a cup of tea. Our loop is for the dogs, excited to get out and meet other dogs after they have been stuck inside while their owner works a long day in town. It’s for the creative enthusiasts, to capture the local beauty through the lens as the sun rises and sets over the harbour. To appreciate the art pieces along the way and the ongoing garden developments as time passes. It’s for the lonely, to find a smile and a wave, maybe even a new conversation on those hard days. Our precious loop is for the locals, the tourists, boaties, diners, families and couples. As I walk this path each week, I see you all and I’m so proud to be walking this walkway with you.

Milne’s wife leaving him for a younger man; The Chronicles of Narnia has Jesus represented by a cuddly apex predator, which Jesus sort of was. Here are some other children’s books you might not have known contained powerful statements disguised as children’s literature. 1 The Very Hungry Caterpillar – Based upon
T
he other night I read my son The Butter Battle Book by Dr Seuss, MD. He loved it so much he read it again after “lights out,”
not that there is such a thing as ‘lights out’ thanks to daylight saving! The Butter Battle Book is not only an enjoyable lark about Yooks and Zooks debating which side bread should be buttered on, it’s also an allegory about the Cold War arms race. You read your child such a book and it’s an opportunity to explain the absurdity of undeclared wars, mutually assured destruction, doomsday devices etc. Yes, there’s nothing like putting your child to sleep with the soothing concept that they might not wake up tomorrow. Now, The Butter Battle Book – written by a man who once wrote anti-Jap propaganda cartoons for Uncle Sam – is just one of many allegories hiding in books which appear childish on the surface. Animal Farm is not just another Babe The Talking Pig. It’s actually about the hypocrisy of Communism and was inspired by the Great Rift between the ‘useful idiot’ supporters of Stalin and genuine socialists who supported the Trotsky model. Also, the duck with the tiny penis who’s really crap at
an idea by Jorge Luis Borges, the caterpillar represents Kim Jong-Un; the array of delicious leaves each represent the seven pillars of Islam 2 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl – Consider the seven justified deaths of the seven decadent children. It makes sense that the first draft of the manuscript was written by Andrew Kevin Walker, who went on to write such family fare as Se7en. 3 Horton Hears a Who by Dr Seuss – first scripted as Horton Hears An Allegation when Theodore Geisel was a staffer on the 1991 campaign trail of then-Arkansas governor Bill Clinton, the book references the benefit of silence afforded to privileged white males accused of sexual misconduct. The mayor of Whoville is widely understood to reference all women. 4 Charlotte’s Web – this anti-immigration tract perfectly captures the fraught dynamic between a respectable mammal named Wilbur and Charlotte, the foreigner he can’t stop thinking about, with Charlotte characterised as a horrid scuttling creature which feasts on the innards of WASP civilisation. 5 Where The Wild Things Are – Pretty much all sex from start to finish.
