Welcome

T

he rush is over and you should now be relaxing and hopefully enjoying what Northland has to offer - whether it’s day trips to our dazzling beaches or perhaps you’re camping. Maybe you’re even planning the next holiday. Inside, we have a list of all the Northland Doc campsites. MERMAID POOLS, MATAPOURI But if roughing it isn’t your style, what about the next step up? One of our lead stories casts the spotlight on a new venture by a local woman who takes the stress out of packing, setting up, bickering spouses, demanding sprogs, plus all that in reverse with the washing at the end. If you’re in search of something to do, we feature another new venture – the Adrenaline Adventure Park. I know my kids are chaffing at the bit to get there and, after chatting with the owners and hearing all the fun had, even I’m keen! While we couldn’t possibly feature everything there is to do in our region, why don’t you check out one of the i-SITEs for some insight? Their brochures are updated every year with all these new endeavours. Oftentimes our tourists are more clued up on our area than we are when it comes to local hot spots. In fact, it was some international tourists who told me about the magical Mermaid Pools at Matapouri several summers ago. It’s now a regular on our summer to-do list and good, free fun with a little hard work getting there (I probably wouldn’t recommend for pre-schoolers unless you’re an adventurous family) but the reward soon becomes apparent. So make like the visitors we talk to on page 29 and become a tourist in your home town!

OUR PEOPLE

It’s camping girls but not as we know it

D

iana Staveley has fond memories of care-free road-tripping and camping with girlfriends after graduating from university. Add husbands, kids and pets into the mix and those subsequent camping holidays became not so relaxed. The idea of an easier way began brewing. “Three girlfriends and I set off around Coromandel with a station wagon, a biggish pup tent, sleeping bags, a cooker and coffee plunger. Camping nowadays is still great but quite a lot of stress and work; organising and packing the equipment, putting up the tent, feeding and looking after everyone’s needs. All for odd moments of tranquillity and some beach time, to have to do it in reverse at the end.” A girls’ weekend away in the outdoors without the usual stress of making it eventuate was looking appealing. “What if the tent was already set up and you didn’t need the trailer? You wouldn’t need the bloke’s help and he could stay at home with the kids. What if there were nice, comfy camp beds made up with linen and you didn’t have to deal with all the washing back at home? You’d pack only your togs and PJs. Imagine hanging with your girls away from it all where you could drink, laugh and eat cheese. Now there’s an idea!” Feedback from others, involving hilarious stories of camping nightmares, proved Diana, who is happily married and has a daughter and a dog, wasn’t the only one with these wistful thoughts. With a lot of encouragement and, after practising the experience last summer with several groups of friends, Diana launched Perfect Four in October.

BY JODI BRYANT

Based at Whangarei Heads, a 45-minute drive from town, the site is situated on a coastal farm with a backdrop of Mt Manaia and walking access to a beautiful, deserted long, white sandy beach. A large, modern canvas tent with sturdy camp beds are set up beforehand so groups of four can simply show up to be met by Diana and shown the ropes before she leaves them to enjoy the experience. “It’s comfortable, modern camping. There are flush toilets, and hot showers onsite but no power or wifi.” Guests simply bring a bag of clothes, food and drinks – there is a camp kitchen with gas fridge, bbq and cooker onsite. “I think the experience starts with the anticipation; planning meals, cocktails and treats. Then the fun of a girls’ road-trip. Really the whole experience is up to them - it’s their girl-camp. “There is plenty to see and do; walk Mt Manaia, have surf or SUP lesson, yoga … or just enjoy doing nothing much, being outside and having a beach to themselves. At night, they can have a campfire, watch the stars, listen for Kiwi and experience the fun of a big girls’ sleepover.” A Girl Guide leader, Diana has been organising camps for girls and women since before cell-phones were invented. “The tents and equipment have changed but what hasn’t is the fun of being outdoors; the simplicity of daily tasks, the wonders of nature and the joy of sleeping in a tent with your friends.” She says the name Perfect Four comes from the vision of

the perfect four women camping experience. “Four people fit nicely in a car, there are four glasses of wine in a bottle and four is perfect for playing cards. Four is just a number that seems to work in life – and it just so happens that our fabulous Perfect Four tent is ideally set up for a luxury four-lady experience.” The feedback has been ‘super-positive’ and she’s finding it popular with all ages, both locals and Aucklanders, for girlsgetaways, hens nights, birthdays, as well as for Whangarei Heads events, such as the Wild Kiwi and Easter Arts Trail. “I’m one of four sisters and am still really close with my uni friends. I get how nourishing girl-time is for the soul. We women become so absorbed with keeping the men, children and animals in our lives happy, that we forget to take time out for ourselves. “As my best friend says: ‘There is a reason the airline safety briefing says to put on your own oxygen mask before helping others. You can’t help anyone if you don’t’. Sometimes we forget to breathe.” For more For entry details, information, go to: see page 31 www.perfectfour.co.nz

OUR PEOPLE It’s entertaining for all the people on the water and for those watching. A lot of dads get out there on the blob and send their kids flying.”

On track to be living the dream BY JODI BRYANT

T

ake two fearless Hukerenui farm boys with a passion for adrenaline adventures, a big dream, a lot of hard slog with help from family and friends and what do you get? A pumping Adrenaline Adventure Park in Northland. Growing up on a Northland farm, brothers Cody and Klay Rouse were never short of adventures. Scaling trees, building tree huts, quad biking and wake boarding along the river were just some of their antics. “There was a lot of friendly, brotherly competition going on,” recalls Cody. “Since the age of 18, I had this dream to build a full-size wake boarding cable system but it’s definitely evolved along the way.” With the backing of parents Roger and Leanne and sister Jayme Whetton, the family began searching for the ideal land when they chanced upon a nearby 12ha fresh-water lake for sale on 110ha owned by an elderly family friend. Together, with the family friend, they worked the land and lake, with Cody sourcing a company to make the equipment as their idea evolved. After a winter of hard labour, the Hikurangi Adrenaline Adventure Park, ten minutes north of Kamo, opened in November, amid much anticipation from locals, and has since

seen hundreds of thrill-seekers flock to the remote location. Today it boasts a blow-up obstacle course, featuring the popular Blob, a 45m slide, which fires people into the 12m-deep (at places) lake, human foosball, six glamping tents, cabins, paintball, a wakeboarding cable system, jet skiing, kayaks, paddleboards, a swimming area and with plans to add claybird shooting, mounting biking, horse trekking, motor cycling and more. While no bookings are required during weekdays, weekend bookings fill up quickly with the park popular for end of year school trips, camps, holiday programmes and team-building with groups travelling from near and far to partake. Says Cody’s dad Roger: “It’s entertaining for all the people on the water and for those watching. A lot of dads get out there on the blob and send their kids flying.” The blob is an inflatable bubble which one person jumps on to and catapults another person into the lake. “We’ve got families who rock up and stay here till 5pm and the kids still don’t want to go.” While Jayme runs the admin side of things from abroad, Leanne added the feminine touch setting up the glamping which hosts up to 60 people. “My wife has done a beautiful job setting it up. We didn’t

want to start putting buildings around the place as we have kiwi reservices 100m from where the tents are sitting.” Some of the kiwi have GPS trackers which are available to school groups to find kiwi in the wild. There are age restrictions on certain activities and participants are given a safety talk prior to partaking. Life jackets are worn and Cody and Klay have undergone first aid training and a lifesaving course. Despite reaching their summer deadline, because of the popularity of the park, the family are still rushed off their feet. “We’re pretty buggered actually,” laughs Roger, when asked if they have time to partake in the adventure park they created. “After closing we usually have a bit of a play,” says Cody. “I love the water – in the summer I spend more time on the water than land. “We’re definitely on track to be living the dream.”

Adrenaline Adventure Park is based at 27 Hukerenui Rd and costs $25 a day.

remember, as if it were yesterday; our grandmother saying how cruel life was. “I just feel like l’m 18, until I look in the mirror and see this old old woman staring back.” The tears would roll down her cheeks and she’d whisper: “I make a point of not looking into mirrors any more.” Way back then, with the world at our feet, we just saw the old woman, but five decades later, we understand what she was talking

The eyesight isn’t what it used to be and a whole new conversation around glasses suddenly opens up as we identify other ‘squinters’ or assist ‘forgotten glasses’ sufferers by reading price tags. Unlike our grandmother, the x5 magnified mirror is an essential accessory, almost a pet really. It allows us to pluck our eyebrows, upper lip, nose and under chin

about. Recently, (forty one days ago to be exact), we turned the big SIX O!!! A milestone we’ve celebrated with gusto, as we’re the first women in our immediate family to have made it!! So we’ve strung it out. We’ve wined, dined, lunched, partied, boogied and coffee-ed for days. Our Facebook friends must have been sick of us!! Photos were posted/tagged and shared continuously for at least a week. They say that 60’s the new 40. Maybe that’s true in mind-set, but I know for sure that if we looked like this at 40 we’d have been pretty disappointed!! Physically, though, as 60 year olds, it’s noticeable that more care

Unlike our grandmother, we are not afraid of what we see in our x5 magnified mirror. It enhances our lives at sixty, giving us the confidence to walk out the door feeling well-groomed and hair-tamed. Yes grandma we do understand - we’ve inherited your youthful mind-set, which hasn’t, over the years, wrinkled, scarred or been covered with age spots, but we’ve pushed the boundaries more than women of your era, because we can. Make 2018 your best year yet!

Seven ways to hit the ground running in 2018 BY NATALIE TOLHOPF

BY LIFE & STYLE COACH SHARON GIBSON

F

or a lot of us, the new year is a time to kickstart new targets and begin moving in new directions. I personally love this time of the year; there’s a sense of freshness

available, we’ve had a chance to rest and rejuvenate over the holiday period and we’ve celebrated our successes of the previous year with our friends and family.

D

and if you don’t start now, you might find yourself in the same place this time next year or the next 20; • Take the path of less resistance - whatever your new targets are, you are going to meet some resistance or roadblocks along the way. This is where you get the chance to step up IF you continue to move through or around them. You’ve worked a long day and too tired to workout? You’ve worked a crazy week and simply cannot be bothered cooking that healthy meal? There’s a massive sale on at your favourite store that might take you away from your financial targets? These are all the things that pop up that keep you resisting the level of success you know is possible. Push through; • If it was easy all the time, you wouldn’t be growing – acknowledge this. Be prepared for plenty of challenge and just know that the change you step up into, you become a leade of. Someone is watching you, you have the chance to inspire those people around you, as well as yourself; • YOU are the catalyst – don’t rely on a catalyst to move you forward. You ARE the catalyst. Take action, be accountable, be honest with yourself, keep moving forward! By Sharon Gibson LIFE & STYLE coach | Access Consciousness© CFMW

What a pain – you’re in your office worrying about paying the bills while everyone else is camping at Coopers Beach.

There is a misconception out there that Kiwi folk don’t buy over January. But that’s not true! People might go camping up north, to the bach at Matapouri or down the line to see

whanau. But they take their phones - all is not lost. Relaxation scrolling on social media is a real thing – and people enjoying shopping online. What can you sell, solve and create for ideal clients during this time?

If you, like me are ready to step up into more of what this amazing gift called life has to offer, then here are a few of my favourite tips to assist you: • Start before you’re ready – if you are always waiting for the perfect time or the right moment – it’s never going to come. You are never going to be ready,

oes it feel like your business is as dry as a droughtridden Northland paddock over summer?

You have worked hard all year so don’t put the brakes on now. Take some time before you load the chilly bin for the road trip south with these seven simple tips:

1 2

3 4 5 6 7

Schedule some social media posts to run on your platforms over the holidays; Commit to writing one newsletter while you are away to help you bring a new vibe, perspective and realness to your database; Have some New Year specials ready to go. Everyone loves a bargain! You could whip up some funky bundles with stock that needs to go, or services that are automated; Choose a new platform like Instagram Stories and share behind the scenes of your life and biz. People buy from people! Create content. Summer days are great for those creative juices; Create a mind map. Lie in a hammock or in the shade with a cool drink and a notebook. Make a list of all the goals you want to accomplish next year, create some blog topics for six months (only need six) and get writing;

If you focus on making sure you are keeping up the momentum during the quieter times, then you are ready to hit the ground running in February, and not March.

ith the swelling population of Mangawhai generating over 1,000 beach-goers to the surf beach at a time during summer months, local life guards are certainly kept

on their toes. Mangawhai Heads Volunteer Lifeguard Service (MHVLS) has come a long way from the days when it functioned using a borrowed reel with a handful of lifeguards operating from a tin shed. That was back in 1963 when the club formed - today the reel has been replaced with rescue boats and the tin shed evolved into a modern club house hosting over 150 members. Yet, due to the increasing population of Mangawhai and surrounding areas over recent years, these upgrades still aren’t enough to cater for the masses who flock to Mangawhai Heads Beach during the height of summer. As MHVLS veteran and local surfer Tony Baker says: ‘Pretty much any day there is a wave and the sun is out, the beach is heaving’. “Mangawhai is growing all the time and, with a whole bunch of different events over the summer months, such as the New Year Eve Party Northern Bass, which saw 8.000 people coming to the area for three-four days, we can often see 1,000-plus people on or around the beach on any given day.

Five easy new year’s health resolutions

A

s another year has come to a close, thoughts of new beginnings and fresh starts are on our minds. It’s the perfect time to get in shape, eat better, exercise more and become an overall happier person. Right? But how many times have you made a New Year’s resolution and never really followed through? If you’ve sworn off them because you fail to keep them, the good news is it does not have to involve a radical overhaul of your life. Here are five meaningful changes to work on: 1. Change your health outlook - Instead of an all-ornothing approach, look at health as a continuum and that every decision you make moves you closer to one end of the continuum (good health) or the other (poor health). For instance, drinking a soda would move you in the wrong direction, while a glass of water would move you in the right direction. By making small, positive decisions, you move closer and closer to good health. 2. Think health not weight loss - The fact is you can lose weight and continue to be unhealthy. But when you change your way of eating permanently, add in more exercise and movement, work to reduce stress, and get healthy amounts of sleep, not only will your health improve, but your body will begin losing the excess weight. Weight gain is a symptom. A side effect of living an unhealthy lifestyle. It is not the problem that needs solving. Shift energy away from fighting the never-ending symptoms of unhealthiness and get right to the root of the problem. Focus on improving your health, and have faith that the inside of your body is changing for the better. In time, your external appearance will align with its internal counterpart. Get healthy and losing weight will take care of itself. The

Inspiring 79-year-old woman confirms it’s never too late to achieve your health goals

Helen Crewe flies the flag for seniors, winning international health club competition

I

n late 2016 Helen Crewe weighed 79kg, had high blood pressure, was facing type 2 diabetes and a hip replacement and was fearful of walking for over ten minutes at a time. Fast-forward to 2018 and the Kerikeri 79-year-old is 25kg lighter and holds the title of Senior Curvette of the Year. A move across the Tasman prompted a vicious cycle for Helen. “We rented a small home while we were looking to settle,

so takeout meals were the answer most of the time. Being retired, I woke up late most days. Instead of walking, I’d drive into town and a get a coffee with several slices of thick buttered toast or a muffin. I’d get a curry for lunchtime and share a couple of glasses of wine. I kept adding to it because emotionally I was vulnerable and I didn’t care.” As time went by, Helen was mentally and physically debilitated by the aches in her hips and knees, coupled with no exercise. Finally, after alarm bells started ringing, she worked up the courage to visit Curves in Kerikeri. “I knew I had to do something to improve my health. I met Marie, my Curves Coach, who helped me discover a love I never knew was there for exercise, together with diet advice.” Today Helen is fighting fit with no pain in her hips and knees, she’s halved her blood pressure tablets and reached

her goal weight of 54kg. What’s more, she was crowned Senior Curvette of the Year 2017, an award that is given to an active member 60 years or over across 150 clubs in New Zealand and Australia. Helen is now a mirror of wellbeing with many of the Curves members approaching her during class for advice and even her husband has benefited from her overhaul, losing 7kg. She stresses the importance of regular exercise and healthy eating, especially for seniors. “Exercise, together with a nutritious diet, is the most important thing you can do for yourself with advancing years. Besides the physical benefits, you are only as old as you think you are. Mentally it has given me the drive to be social, take on new projects and add new interests to my life. Sitting around ensures you become old in mind and spirit!” Helen has a new lease on life and is now motivated to do what she loves; be actively involved in the local theatre group, Kerikeri Theatre Company. “I’ve seen a huge improvement in my muscle, balance and mobility. As I got physically stronger, I was happier and more confident to be part of the community. What I’ve learnt is that it’s your life, not a rehearsal, and no second chances. My passions are definitely a reason for living. Now I’ve been involved in two shows, with another two on the way.” Says Curves marketing manager Jacqui Bialocki: “The Senior Curvette of the Year is inspiring to women of all ages. Helen has jumped through many hurdles, but age is not one of them. She serves as an encouraging reminder to never say never. You can reach your goals if you are dedicated and find the right support. At Curves we are designed to improve the quality of women’s lives, no matter what your situation we will support your health goals through.”

DOC manages more than 200 campsites throughout New Zealand and 13 locations in Northland. They are places to relax, enjoy and explore the outdoors. The DOC camps are great fun and tend to attract more down-to-earth people looking for a more genuine camping experience. DOC campsites are often in some of the best locations around the country, and especially in Northland. DOC sites are often described as basic, offering ‘back to nature’ style accommodation and facilities – and this is reflected in the price with adults generally $13 a night. uying a new bed is a big investment and should be the most expensive item of furniture in your home. We spend one third of our lives sleeping and, as I’ve mentioned before, a good night’s sleep is the ‘elixir of life’. But how do we protect this investment? In days gone by we simply placed a blanket on top of our mattress and thought this was going to give the protection it needed … what others called a mattress protector! Oh dear, those where the days… long gone, together with the milkman. The question is, how could a simple blanket protect our mattress in terms of dust mites, mildew and mould? Sadly, it didn’t. Beds, these days, generally come with a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty and, in that period of 3,650 nights, with the exception of time away, we have to consider all the moisture our bodies give off while asleep. Plus, the little accidents that occur, the amount of skin flakes we produce, and the times we changed our babies’ nappies on top of the bed… Fortunately, in this day and age, we have choices, like a water-proof mattress protector, and, no, you don’t need to be incontinent to need one. It’s not a piece of plastic like the ones we used on our children’s beds many years ago when they were not fully potty trained. The fact is we lose an average of a cup to half a litre of body fluid, as well as a million skin flakes each night! Consequently, unprotected mattresses and pillows create the perfect breeding ground for bacteria, mould and dust mites which all contribute to asthma, eczema and rhinitis/allergies. Furthermore, we also need to look at protecting our investment in terms of the manufacturer’s warranty. Please be aware, that if your bed has a 10-year warranty against manufacturing faults and something went wrong over this period, it is very clear that, if your bed is in an unsanitary condition, the manufacturer reserves the right to refuse service until you get it professionally cleaned. That’s a pretty good reason to purchase a waterproof mattress protector at the same time you purchase your new bed. Plus, they have either a five or 10-year warranty. It is vitally important that your mattress protector is washed on a regular basis - at least once a month. They are fitted like a fitted sheet with expandable sides which will fit thin or thick mattresses and can be tumble-dried up to 60 degrees. The waterproof membrane is breathable and some of them have a TENCEL (Natural Eucalyptus-based fibre) sleeping surface which will maintain an even surface temperature and is good for sensitive skin. These protectors are also available as pillow protectors and enjoy the same benefits. Just be aware that it is best not to close the zipper fully on the pillow protector as it will make your pillow feel different. Plus, they are not ‘noisy’. P.S. Please remember information is always free, so if you have a question or a concern, please do not hesitate to call us on 09 438 3550, seven days a week. I also recommend you have a look at the BedsRus website and we promise to do our best in matching you to your perfect sleep. We offer a ’30-Day Comfort Warranty’, conditions apply. ‘Til next time…

HOME TRENDS

Using colour to accentuate home features

I

HARNESS THE POWER OF THE SUN THIS SUMMER

Contact us to get your Solar Water Heating installed and capture your slice of the Sun’s free energy.

nterior design trends are forever changing, but the one constant is that neutral shades will always be a hit for homeowners. However, sometimes you need to add a dash - or a bucketload - of colour to your living room, kitchen or bedrooms in order to bring personality to these frequently-used spaces. In many cases, it’s a good move to use colour to accentuate your home’s features. From fantastic crown moulding, to charming living room alcoves, a pop of blue or a stripe of red can makeover a space. Stick with the neutrals in most instances, but add a splash of colour here and there. Here are some fantastic decorating ideas if you’re ready to experiment with colour and bring out the best of your home. Feature fireplace If you’ve got a fireplace in your living area, consider turning it into a focal point by cleverly using paint. Perhaps you want to create a warmer, cosier living area. You can quite literally take inspiration from your fireplace and embrace wild shades of red, orange and deep yellow. However, you don’t have to paint the whole room these colours. You can paint the fireplace itself and keep the walls a warm cream, such as Resene Half Dutch White. This is the perfect way to balance practicality with a love of fierce, fiery shades such as Resene Smashing and Resene California. Look upwards Are you living in a quaint villa or homely bungalow? If so, you may have beautiful archways in your home - for instance, between the living area and hallway. You can draw attention to such features by using bright paint shades. Because archways are just one element of your home design, painting them a daring shade is not as risky as going over all the walls. Shades such as mustard and eggplant might be too much for your entire living room, but they are perfect for archways. If you’ve always wanted to experiment with colour but have been hesitant, this might be your chance to totally revitalise your property, without going overboard. Focus on the ceiling Have you considered taking a bit of liberty with your ceiling? While many homeowners paint it a very similar colour to their walls - or white - these aren’t the only options available. For instance, dark ceilings are increasingly in vogue and can create a dramatic mood in the living room. If your ceiling has interesting features or you have decorative crown moulding, this could be the perfect approach for your home. While a dark ceiling is a bold move, if you pair it with cream walls and tan furniture, you can achieve a remarkably striking aesthetic. Play up the floor Looking up is all well and good, but have you looked down? Wooden flooring looks fabulous in any home, so if you’ve got such a feature in your property, be sure to play it up! While polished floorboards are popular if you’re going for a sophisticated, classic look, there are other options. For instance, you can play up this natural material by painting your floor a crisp white such as Resene Double Alabaster - and investing in cool white and grey furnishings for a touch of Scandinavian chic. Go a step further and add a stencil, if you dare. Pick a deep hue or vibrant shade, such as Resene Seachange, and apply an abstract or floral stencil print to the centre of your floor. Pick curtains or accessories that also play up the same shade, for an integrated look.

REVIEW: Turkuaz Cafe, 24 Rathbone Street, Whangarei

I

t didn’t take long for me to say “I love coming here”. I giggled when asked to review the food at Turkuaz Cafe. I’ve been eating everything on their menu for a few years now. I had been to the gym, had had a quick shower and was in that frame of mind to have something fresh, tasty and soon-ish. You order at the counter and I opted for a small Chicken Iskender with an extra falafel and a glass of Crossroads Merlot (because this was for Savvy). Jason ordered the Chicken Iskender, fries and garlic bread because he had earned it he said. The young woman on the counter was efficient and patient while we chose sauces, made up our minds and changed them. Food arrived on the table within five minutes. The Iskender meal comes with a range of salads, chicken and your choice of sauces. The tabbouleh is fresh with that lovely nutty texture and full of flavour. The dish is served with fresh tomato, cucumber salad, fresh crunchy lettuce, red cabbage, slices of pita bread, hummus dip and the kebab chicken topped with chosen sauces. It was presented perfectly for the style of food which I ate most of with my fingers. Turkuaz Cafe was busy that night; Two large groups dinning in the corner, quite a few couples and, as we left, there was a line developing at the counter. One of my girlfriends was there with her daughter who had just been to her sport. Her comment to me was perfect: “Our family eat here every week, normally on a Friday night. It’s affordable for a whole family, fast and good”. I thought that sums up why my family are also eating at Turkauz Cafe once a fortnight too. Every time I dine there I see friends and business colleges enjoying the food and vibrant atmosphere. If you haven’t been to Turkuaz Cafe yet you are in for a visual feast. The lavish Turkish cushions covered in wonderful fabrics are comfortable and a bit of fun for the kids. Bright lamp shades and decorations that transport you to experience people with an eye for colour, spirited style and a passion for fresh food! Turkuaz Cafe, Rathbone Street, is a family-run business and our family has watched their families grow, have babies and develop a successful business in Whangarei. You’re missing out if you haven’t been in for a while. We paid $53 which is perfect for what we ate with a glass of good red wine. I remember growing up in the 70s and Friday nights were fish’n chip nights. This is so much better for my family than that!

You can develop the skills and techniques to create fabulous artwork in our purpose-built arts centre, and study the market to understand how you can shape a career doing what you love. We teach you to look at the creative world with a view to your future employment opportunities. Courses on offer include*:

LEVEL 4 New Zealand Certificate in Arts and Design

This qualification is designed for school leavers and for adults who can demonstrate introductory skills and experience in arts, crafts and/or design.

LEVEL 7 Bachelor of Applied Arts - Visual and Digital

With this degree programme you will be able to take personal art and design ideas, underpinned by research into contemporary practice, through to quality finished products in selected media. It has a strong practical focus and subjects on offer include drawing, art history, sculpture, photography, graphic design, clay, glass, printmaking, animation, digital graphics, game design, interactive design, mobile device design, moving image, social media marketing, visual effects, video production and web-based design.

LEVEL 7 Maunga Kura Toi - Bachelor of Māori Art

This degree enables you to develop traditional skills in a programme that is steeped in Māori language and culture. You can choose from raranga (weaving); rauangi (visual arts) or whakairo (carving) as your kaupapa toi (art form). With highly experienced and passionate tutors, you will also complete taumata atakura (core) and elective courses.

Applied Arts graduate: Megan Dickinson Self employed - Curator at MD Gallery “Twenty years ago I had the idea to open a gallery but I put it aside until now. I opened the MD Gallery in downtown Whangarei mid-2017, and for me it’s all about curating. Deciding to do my degree in applied arts was a real turning point for me. “Committing to that study gave me the opportunity to contemplate things that mattered to me and gave me the confidence to rediscover what I was good at. The tutors were practising artists themselves with solid reputations and they were beyond dedicated in sharing their wealth of knowledge and experience. When I finished the degree in 2014 I went into recovery mode for a while then I entered the Corban’s Art Awards and won second place in the sculpture section. That re-awoke my creativity. “At around that time I started work at The Shutter Room as a curator and was there for a couple of years. I exhibited some of my own photograms (photos made without a camera) and installations there. The transition from The Shutter Room to running my own gallery was prompted by turning 50. It was ann ‘if not now… when’ moment so I started looking for premises and found this high-foot-traffic site in early 2017.

“I curate both group and solo shows here, mostly for Whangarei artists, ranging from emerging to established. There’s been a gap in Whangarei for a fine art gallery space and I’m now providing that space. I’m into making connections between the viewer and artist, and showing viewers how to hang a mix of photographs, paintings and prints together. “My focus now is to establish both my client and artist bases, but to me the best part of having the gallery is hanging the work – the curating.”

orthland is always a top destination for Kiwi and overseas visitors during our long, hot summer. We want everyone to have the holiday of a lifetime, not just sunning themselves on our beaches, but also enjoying what our thriving creative community has on offer. While you can find the majority of Northland galleries and art events in the Northland Art Guide released in October, there are others that will feature in the 2018 edition. For example, the Creative Industries Award winners at the 2017 Westpac Northland Business Excellence Awards, Memory Lane Gallery in the centre of Whangarei and Steve Hayward Master Jeweller at the Town Basin. South of the city, Meraki Gallery in Ruakaka and Gutry Art Gallery in One Tree Point, both exhibit work by local Bream Bay artists. In Kamo, Jessie Rose has a new gallery and, north of Kamo, you can’t go past the Hikurangi Art Station for an eclectic range of Northland art. When you head further North, Te Pu o Te Wheke Arts is right in the centre of Kaikohe and, in Ahipara, Roma Gallery is open throughout summer selling work they’ve spent all winter creating. Over in Dargaville, Flax and Fibre sell harakeke that they have grown, prepared, dyed and weaved on-site. Event wise, the Quarry Art Centre have their Summer Do on January 8 and Northland Anniversary weekend is jam-packed with events, including the Ngapuhi Festival on Saturday January 27 at Toll Stadium, which will also be the home to the Toi Ngapuhi exhibition running from Thursdsay 25 to Saturday 28. The One Tree Point Art and Craft Working Exhibition is on Saturday and Sunday at One Tree Point and Medieval Madness is at Kiwi North on Sunday. Creative Northland is excited to bring you ArtBeat 2018 on Saturday February 3 from 10am-4pm at Cafler Park in Whangarei. This is Whangarei’s largest interactive arts festival where you can create all day and be entertained for FREE. Come along, listen to the continuous entertainment on stage and have a laugh with MC Luke Bird or drop the kids off at the Resene Interactive Zone and Plus Chartered Accountants Fairy Grotto while you shop at one of the 50+ stalls selling delicious food, local art and craft. With so much to do this summer, there’s no excuse not to be inspired and get creative.

We don’t know the first owner. The car was designed to carry two people in the back, with a chauffeur’s seat in the front. A small fold-down seat is attached to the right, front door, in case you would like to take a doorman with you. Also in the back of the car are glass vases for fresh flowers. These features speak volumes about the car and what sort of person would have owned it. However, the 1919 Opera Coupe was a car with a double six engine (V12) developing 85hp and getting up to speeds of 90 miles an hour - a fast car for its day. This made it the perfect car for ‘booze runs’ across the Canadian border. During the 1920s, alcohol would be transported to the US as the USA government had outlawed the manufacture, sale and transportation of intoxicating liquors. This period is commonly known as ‘Prohibition’. During this time, the car was allegedly owned by a notorious counterfeiter and bootlegger, high on the FBI wanted list. The car was fitted with a copper tank in place of the backseat to facilitate the carrying of large quantities of ‘joy-juice’, as it was called. However, it seems after a police chase, the car was abandoned in a ditch. Customs ceased the car and auctioned it off. It found its way to Jerry Stone who was looking for a challenge. Jerry painstakingly rebuilt the car. Eventually the car was put up for sale. Graeme Craw spotted the car in an American magazine. He purchased it and imported it into New Zealand. The car now sits in the Packard Motor Museum as part of the Packard story.

Riverside SUPers – A great way to get fit and beat your time

Messing up the land for Christmas culture BY MICHAEL BOTUR

K

arl Roberts was in Noosa, Australia in 2005 when he spotted a guy stand-up paddle boarding with his dog. He was intrigued and so went about bringing the sport to Northland. “I thought, ‘that looks unreal’, but when I came back to New Zealand in 2006, I couldn’t buy one so I found an old wind surfer and used that as a board and made the paddle.” He continued to improvise while awaiting the arrival of a paddle board he’d imported. When it arrived, Karl received multiple envious comments so ordered several more for his mates before deciding to sell them himself. Karl, the Riverside Drive Marina manager, has owned the recently-renamed Waterman’s World for around nine years and moved the business closer to the Hatea Loop on the Riverside Drive Marina complex several months ago. It incorporates the latest water sport equipment and shares a space with the newly-opened Kafe. Since becoming one of the first to stand on water in Northland, he has watched the sport take off and, for the last six years, has raced with the Riverside SUPers, a group of stand-up paddlers who meet every Tuesday evening to race at the Town Basin. “Each time I sold a paddle board, I would mention it to them and it just grew.” The group now has up to 40 paddlers ranging from 11-year-olds to those in their 70s, with the biggest age group the 50-70-year-olds. The 4.1km races start at the Canopy Bridge, through Te Matau A Pohe bridge and back with different races based on ability levels. “Everyone likes to race, you can’t help it – if you’re in the last place, you still want to try and catch the person in front of you and if you’re in second to last, you don’t want the person behind to catch you. “It’s a great way of getting fit and trying to beat your time.” Riverside SUPers also host the annual Bridge to Basin challenge, which attracts world champs who pass on tips to fellow paddlers. “We race all year round and, in winter, we wear flashing lights. If someone new shows up – they are shown techniques – and, at the end, we load our boards onto the cars and go and have a cold one and something to eat at The Quay.” Riverside SUPers meet at the Town Basin car park every Tuesday for a 5.30pm race start.

M

y darling wife finds it culturally satisfying to drag the bleeding severed carcass of a Californian into the lounge as part of our cultural responsibility to worship an Israeli political activist. Most people call that putting up a Christmas tree – and those trees come at a cost. Nurturing then dumping Christmas trees is one example of how we’ve altered our landscape to look and feel satisfying to us. Crops, ornamental gardens, shade trees, riparian planting and weeds have all played their part in bending the islands we live on into looking like the islands we came from. If Pakeha could dump snow on the summer streets to remind us of the northern hemisphere, I’m sure we would. Whether you’re English, Welsh or Scottish and you have roses, daffodils or thistles on your property, you’ve probably introduced something to your environment you to scratch a cultural itch. If not you, then the people who came before you likely took care of that job, whether you asked them to or not. It’s about spiritual comfort. People estranged from their cultural needs are worse-off in terms of spiritual health. Pretty much everyone who has ever arrived in NZ has altered the country a little bit so it reminds them of spiritually significant places. This is why on the street not far from my home a church is bedecked with images of date palm trees, oases and head scarves. Not exactly Kiwiana, but that stuff all seems normal if you worship a man from Mesopotamia. The first people who settled NZ brought taro, yams, kumara and gourds as well as animals from their homeland. Later waves of people like Captain Cook dropped off pigs and chickens. After that, acclimatisation societies introduced birds, bugs and bunnies. All the comings and goings brought weeds, too, unfortunately – not that any plant considers itself a weed. As my botanist friend Dr Nicola Day informs me, the definition of a weed is simply any plant existing in a terrain outside its natural habitat. The more competitive seeds thrive when humans give them an opportunity to thrive by disturbing the land, especially as a result of farming. I did try to convince my darling wife to buy a native NZ tree for our lounge this Christmas, to no avail. The disposable tree in the lounge makes my wife feel culturally satisfied. Sigh. I’m off to mow the lawn, which is a mixture of Kentucky Bluegrass (a species originating in Europe and Asia) and “Bermuda grass” (Mediterranean.) I’ll be watching out for the prickles of Onehunga weed – introduced from everywhere except Onehunga. I’ll wish my lawn was made of an NZ native grass species, but that wouldn’t look “normal” in Kiwi culture. There’s something wrong about that.

T

he Whangarei Art Museum has an exciting new exhibition on, Elemental, by local artist Lee Brogan. Brogan creates sculpture, collage, photography and printmaking and her recently exhibited work has been in cast glass, pate de verre glass and mixed media. She is one of only a few proponents worldwide using the ancient Egyptian technique of pate de verre as a sculptural discipline, a process she developed herself and which has won her awards. Elemental brings together pate de verre sculptures, digital prints and Brogan’s images come to life with a new venture into video works that permeate the gallery with their sounds. Brogan has a fascination with the Celtic tradition of “elementals”, the spirit-beings said to dwell within the natural world, and the universal, instinctual feeling that water is a living being. Water is essential to life, but water also holds the power to mesmerise us with its beauty, to hypnotise us with its rhythm, to calm, sooth and reconnect us with our bodies and minds. Water interacting with light reveals the universe within. Stone is the other fundamental element in these works. Brogan’s ancestors were gumdiggers in the Kawakawa area and she feels a close connection to the Bay of Islands. The local landscape is strewn with volcanic rock, half buried or jutting from the ground. These works originate within a few hundred metres from her home on the Purerua peninsula, where large volcanic boulders are still being uncovered, hidden in the undergrowth. “As above, so below” Through altered and enhanced imagery we slip sideways into a parallel universe, closely aligned to our own, but where the microcosm becomes the macrocosm and vice versa. We are never quite sure what we are seeing so the imagination searches for meaning in the abstract. These works are deliberately ambiguous, water could be stone, stone could be water, ice, mist, ocean. Reflections in the water morph into abstract patterns in the presence of wind.

The moving image work is abstract and impressionistic, with layers of sound that create a meditative quality as the elements move, merge and dissipate to the rhythm of natural forces. What is real, what is imagined and is there a difference? For more see www.leebrogan.com You can also see Lee Brogan’s upcoming show Alchemy which opens at the Turner Centre in Kerikeri on January 17, 5.30pm and runs until March 30, supported by the Dalton Trust. 30 | SAVVY
