having a blast. We pulled up at Mahena Island, where Opo the friendly dolphin, who made Opononi famous during the summer of 1955-1956, was found dead upon the rocks. After Lenny explained a bit more about this, we turned round and headed over to Kupe’s ﬁrst landing spot – Te Pouahi – a perfectly wind-swept expanse of golden sand dune. We climbed up the dune here and took in the fabulous vista around us, then we went to an even bigger sand dune where it was time for sand boarding! I watched my boys bravely zooming down head-ﬁrst at great speed, quickly gathering momentum, before skimming along the water at the bottom… and chickened out myself… I was quite happy doing the videoing. We had lots of laughs watching everyone hit the water

that,” he instructed. “Now push it again and give it throttle,” he twinkled. We shot off. Turns out we’d been in ‘tour-mode’ before – who’d have known?! The ‘donuts’ had to be done and, after performing a few 360s, I linked them to ﬁgure eights with my daughter screaming with delight from the back. But, alas, it was now time to re-board the trailer and head back. I’d read feedback from a previous visitor that their face was aching from grinning so hard and it was at this point, I realised mine was too. Back at base and once the jet skis were cleaned up, we were called up for some delicious toasties and a slide show of our

The kids couldn’t get enough of the bombs, even when they spotted the chips Antoinette had thoughtfully packed. On the way home, Lenny pointed out more places of interest and with historical value and it was surprising to learn that he had only moved to the area in recent years. Born and raised in Auckland himself, Lenny’s family have always lived in the Hokianga so he has spent a lifetime holidaying in the region. Less than three years ago, he decided to forego the Auckland lifestyle and return home to his roots and, after convincing Antoinette, also a born and bred Aucklander, the couple have never looked back.

Huge succulent mussels and snapper were being grilled over the brazier with more snapper in the smoker and soon it was on our plates, along with roe, homemade sausages, kamokamo (marrow), cheese buns and coleslaw. What a mean spread! After this, Lenny cranked up the brazier some more and out came the guitars. Lenny and his rele led the way with their smooth, soulful voices and soon had everyone joining in (well not my sons but they were never going to!) My daughter was even taught to play the (dessert) spoons in time to the beat. We During that time, Lenny has delved deep into his ancestry and the history of Hokianga and now relishes the chance to pass on his wealth of knowledge to visitors. He admits it’s a lot more fun appreciating the Hokianga’s offerings from the luxury of ‘big boys toys’, and after making the investment, he started the aptly-named Awesome Adventures so he can make a living doing what he loves, where he loves while sharing it with others. Speaking of which, Lenny has another big toy, great for exploring the sand dunes and beach; when we returned, he swung by on his four-wheel drive side-by-side Polaris Ranger, which we jumped aboard. He took us down to the end of the beach to Omapere, pointing out the erosional damage to sand banks and water-front bachs by rising sea levels, while waving out to locals spending their evening on the beach. We returned home where there was quite the gathering as more friends and family had arrived. It was a festive atmosphere

The next morning, Lenny, with his boundless energy, was up at the crack of dawn keen to take us on a walk or ﬁshing or both! I was keen too but my kids were knackered from all the fun and slept in till nearly 9am! By then the heavens had opened and it was time to return back to the reality of our busy preChristmas lives. While I waited for the kids to surface, I had a fabulous coffee made by Antoinette while Lenny shared some more of the history he is passionate about. Awesome Adventures is just that. Mangawhai Activity Zone – ultimate recreational facility Where can you go to find an extensive playground, outdoor fitness gym, state-of-the-art skate park, bike pump tracks, tennis, netball and basketball court, all-weather cricket pitch, junior soccer field, walking tracks, bbq and picnic areas and an onsite cafe all in one location? Mangawhai Activity Zone’s where it’s at. Thanks to the ongoing drive, dedication and generosity of Mangawhai residents, this ultimate recreational facility, situated on over 1.5 hectares, is a popular destination spot for both locals and out-of-towners. The family park caters for all ages and includes a pirate ship, tunnels, flying saucers and a flying fox with the skate park hosting large national events. This project in coastal, idyllic Mangawhai is ongoing with new features continuing to be added.

Tane Mahuta – Lord of the Forest Tāne Mahuta – the ‘Lord of the Forest’, is a giant kauri tree in the Waipoua Forest. Its age is estimated to be over 2,000 years and, at around 52 metres tall, is the largest kauri known to stand today. Other giant kauri are found nearby, notably Te Matua Ngahere – the ‘Father of the Forest’ and, with a trunk over ﬁve metres in diameter, believed to be the widest girth of any kauri tree in New Zealand. The Tane Mahuta is much higher than Te Matua Ngahere - but doesn’t have the same impressive bulk. It was discovered and identiﬁed in early January 1924 when contractors surveyed the present State Highway 12 route through the forest.

Whale Bay and Matapouri Whale and Matapouri Bays have been recognised by the Lonely Planet guide as being among the best beaches in New Zealand. While Matapouri can be accessed by road, Whale Bay can only be accessed by foot. Park at the top of the hill at the car park on Matapouri Rd and walk down the well-maintained but steep at times, track. This will lead through groves of ancient native trees with spectacular views along the way, to idyllic white sanded beach, great for picnics, snorkelling and swimming. Whale Bay was an ideal location for M ori to launch their early whaling missions and gives it the name popularly used today. The track should take around 30-minutes return or, if you are feeling like a longer and scenic walk, park at Matapouri and walk across. Matapouri boasts a vast, circular stretch of pristine sand, with rock pools for the kids to explore. What’s more, ﬁsh n chips and ice creams are sold nearby.

Caving The Abbey Caves Reserve is scattered with giant, limestone rocks that date back millions of years and, in their midst, three signiﬁcant caves: Organ, Middle and Ivy. The Organ Cave is the largest of the caves; you will see the large over-hanging stalactites which look similar to church organ pipes. Middle Cave and Ivy Cave are smaller caves but equally interesting and it is possible to enter and exit at different points. In all the Caves you will see thousands of glow worms. Take a torch and expect to get your shoes wet as you will be wading through water. Waipu Caves have stalactites, stalagmites and a galaxy of glow worms. Bones of bats, birds, amphibians, and reptiles are commonly found in caves. Some caves also contain remains of fossil invertebrates,

often of previously unknown or locally extinct species. Torches a must and wading through water and clambering over mud banks may be necessary. There is a cold shower outside the cave that you can use to clean up afterwards. Note: Caves can ﬁll with water quickly. Before entering, always check the previous week’s rainfall.

Tahi Café & Walks – Pataua North The Tahi Café in beautiful Pataua North is now open for the summer season – open daily from 8.30am to 4pm until early February. Whangarei Heads The Whangarei Heads area is rich in history with stunnery scenery and enchanting places to explore. It has a variety of different extinct and weathered volcanoes that erupted over a period of about four million years to approximately 20 million years ago and, as a result, formations were formed below. Little Munro Bay has some good examples of these formations and another fascinating formation is the natural wharf at Taurikura Bay. Myths and legends abound in this area, with one being that the natural volcanic rock causeway disappearing into the sea is an unﬁnished work for the great chief Manaia whose wahine was across the harbour. Before it was ﬁnished, he had tired of her and the bridge was never completed. Two great maungas loom adjacent at Whangarei Heads and are part of the remains of the ancient chain of volcanos. Scattered with volcanic rocks – both small

and large, Majestic Mt Manaia has a lot of steep stairs that seem to go on and on but the view at the top is worth it - and you deﬁnitely feel like you’ve conquered something. The more inconspicuous Mt Aubrey is easier-going with ﬂat sections in between inclines and look-outs along the way. Whichever you chose, there are ample nearby stunning beaches to choose from for either a quiet dip to cool down, or a frolic in the surf, an ice cream shop and even a watering hole nearby.

The DOC camps are great fun and tend to attract more down to earth people looking for a more genuine camping experience. DOC campsites are often in some of the best locations around the country, and especially in Northland. DOC sites are often described as quite basic, offering ‘back to nature’ style accommodation and facilities – and this is reﬂected in the price with adults generally $13 a night. The Packard 400 produced during 1955 and 1956 is one of the most popular Packard models among collectors today. The 400 is a two-door hard-top (the convertible was called a Patrician) and generally came in a two-tone colour scheme. Our car is deep pink with white trim along the bottom of the doors and a white roof, giving the car a smart modern look for its era. The Packard 400 was a state-of-the-art car, particularly in regard to its new torsionlevel suspension system which automatically adjusted the car’s height while driving, keeping it level. The 400 was available with plenty of extras, such as the electric push-button gear selection on the ultramatic transmission, electric power windows, power

steering, power brakes, electric door locks and a wonder-bar station seeking radio to name a few. Equally important, this model was fitted with a new modern overhead-valve V-8 engine which replaced the old straight-eight. The motor was Packard’s biggest V-8 at 374cc and 290hp, for a short time, the most powerful V-8 manufactured in the industry. In 1956 seat belts were available for the first time. The 400 was designed with plenty of interior space; the rear leg room rivalled any limousine. In the end, these cars had everything except sales. The main reason put forward for this was a lack of confidence in the company which made buyers concerned about after-sales support for their cars. The 400 is considered one of the last true

SPCA’s top tips for keeping pets safe this summer

With the warmer weather upon us, SPCA wants to remind animal owners to be vigilant in the care of their pets over the summer.

n the summer months, SPCA sees an increase in the volume of complaints relating to animals without shade, animals lacking fresh water, and dogs left in hot cars. “All of these welfare calls can be avoided by owners putting provisions in place and planning ahead for their furry family members,” says SPCA CEO, Andrea Midgen. Dog owners should also be aware that with the introduction of MPI’s new Animal Welfare regulations last year, they can now be ﬁned $300 for leaving their dog in a hot car. “Dogs left in cars is a common welfare issue SPCA responds

to over the summer. The interior of a car can heat up very quickly on a sunny day. Leaving the windows slightly open has very little effect. This situation can be extremely dangerous even fatal - for dogs and is entirely preventable. “It is our hope that owners will be mindful of the new regulation and the risk to their dogs - and think twice about leaving their dog in a car on a warm day,” says Ms Midgen. “Summer is an enjoyable time of year for pets and people, and there are simple steps animal owners can take to make sure their pets are safe and happy too.” Help your pet stay cool and enjoy a happy summer by following SPCA’s summer safety tips: Dogs in hot cars If the purpose of your trip is not for your dog, leave them at home. If you must take your dog with you in the car, bring fresh water and a water dish for them and always take your dog with you when you leave your car. Leaving a dog in a car on a warm day is a risk, as they can quickly suffer and die in hot cars. The new regulation to protect dogs means, if you leave your dog in a hot car and it becomes heat stressed, you and the owner of the vehicle can be ﬁned $300. If you see a dog suffering in a hot car, take immediate action by ﬁnding the dog owner or call the Police or SPCA. Do not smash the car window as this can put both you and the dog at risk. Exercise for pets Exercise your pets early in the mornings or in the evenings, so they won’t overheat. Avoid long and strenuous walks on warm, sunny days, and steer clear of prolonged sun exposure. Take your pets to an area that has shade or a place for them to swim so they can take a break to cool off, and if they want to slow down or stop, follow their lead. Water for all Ensure your animals always have access to clean, fresh drinking water. In summer, keep their water bowl in a shaded spot to avoid it warming up. Just like us, pets don’t like warm drinking water. You can also leave shallow dishes of cool water in shaded spots outside to help wildlife keep cool and hydrated. Water may also be used to mist pets to help them keep cool.

Sunburn Pets that are fair-skinned or light-haired are particularly susceptible to the sun’s harsh rays. Skin cancer occurs commonly in dogs and cats and, even though the fur provides some sun protection, your pet needs a sunblock applied every three to four hours to areas of their body that have no, or little, hair. You can buy pet-friendly sunscreen to rub on the tips of their ears, on the end of their nose, and on their stomach – these are the most commonly sunburnt areas. Normal sunscreen ingredients include zinc oxide, which can be toxic to animals, so a pet-friendly sunscreen is best. Shade Ensure your outside pets, including horses, goats and poultry, have access to shaded areas to avoid the sun. Bear in mind the shade moves throughout the day so make sure to have multiple shade sources so your pet is protected regardless of time of day. Mature trees provide excellent shade but, if you do not have access to these, artiﬁcial shade can be simply and inexpensively constructed from shade cloth or tarps.

For dogs • Half-ﬁll a shallow children’s pool for your dog to bathe in – just make sure they can get in and out easily. • Put ice cubes in an indoor bowl and freeze a big block of ice for their outdoor bowl. • Doggie ice blocks are also a great way to keep them hydrated – just freeze your dog’s favourite treat in water, inside a Kong, or an icecream container. • You can ﬁnd cooling mats at most pet stores – these can be used as crate liners or as beds, and can be helpful for other animals too. For cats • • •

Make sure your cat has some shaded, cool spots to lie down in. Place ice water in glasses and bowls around the house – cats are notorious for drinking out of any water container they can ﬁnd. Stroking your cat with a damp cloth is a great way to keep them cool (if they will allow it!) – the best places to attend to are their paws, bellies and the outside of their ears. Brush your cat regularly – matted fur works as insulation, and will mean your cat can overheat more easily. If you have a long-haired cat and decide to shave them, leave at least a full inch of fur to help prevent sunburn.

For small animals • Relocate your small animal to a cooler part of your home. • Place ice cubes wrapped in a tea towel, a small frozen icepack, or a wet tea towel in their enclosure for them to lean against. •

Paws for thought Your dog’s feet can get burnt and blistered on the hot ground, particularly hot pavements, asphalt or scorching beach sand. Hot black iron-rich sands are found along much of the Western Coast of the North Island and can cause huge damage to the paws of your furry friends. Check if it is a safe temperature by holding the back of your hand on the pavement or sand for ﬁve seconds. If it is too hot for you to hold your hand there then your pet shouldn’t be out walking on it. Pets requiring extra care In the summer months, pet owners should take extra care with older or overweight pets, brachycephalic breeds (such as Pugs, British Bulldogs, and French Bulldogs), and those suffering from cardiac conditions. These pets are more susceptible to falling victim to heat stress.

Small animals need to stay well hydrated, so fruit and vegetables high in water content, such as celery and apples, are a great and delicious way to help them avoid dehydration. Be careful to make sure the vegetables you feed to your small animal are appropriate for their dietary needs.

But we cannot do it alone, we need everyone’s help to keep our roads safe. Seatbelts A third of drivers and passengers who die on our roads aren’t wearing their seatbelts – seatbelts save lives. Regardless of how fast you’re travelling, wearing your seatbelt properly will reduce your risk of getting injured – or even worse, dying. Being properly restrained reduces your chance of death or serious injury in a crash by 60 percent in the front seat and 44 percent in the back seat. That’s why New Zealand law requires drivers and passengers in cars and other motor vehicles to wear seatbelts and child restraints. In the last three years, over 284 people who died in NZ crashes were not wearing their seatbelt. Many of these people would still be alive today if they were safely wearing their seatbelt.

Staying Safe on the Water this Summer Boaties, kayakers and sailors will be hitting the water in droves these summer holidays. With so many of us enjoying the splendour of the sun and seas, it’s a good time to remember some key safety advice.

Lifejackets – check them, wear them Lifejackets are the number one piece of safety equipment on the water, but not all lifejackets will do the job. Lifejackets that are over ten years old are no good during an emergency, as seawater, sun and general wear and tear can damage them and they lose their effectiveness over time. In fact, many older lifejackets won’t even float, if a lifejacket is more than ten years old, it’s time to replace it. Kapok-filled lifejackets are equally dangerous. Kapok is a fluffy plant fibre similar to cotton which can absorb water, while the cotton straps that usually accompany the lifejacket can rot and tear over time. Kapok lifejackets should be destroyed and replaced

Learn to swim It is important you and your children are able to swim, even if you are not actively involved in water sports. Unfortunately drowning is New Zealand’s third-highest cause of accidental death: approximately 120 deaths occur each year. Swimming lessons are available for all ages and levels of ability. Swimming is enjoyable, low impact and one of the best types of exercise available. For more information, contact your local public swimming pool usually through your local council.

Always supervise children near water Keeping a watch on your children when they’re near water is the single most important precaution you can take. Parents know from experience how quickly children can do something unexpected. Proper supervision in and around water means a responsible adult keeps young children in their care both within sight and within reach.

At the beach Understanding how waves, wind and tides affect conditions at the beach is vital to keep yourself and others safe from danger. Busy Northland beaches are patrolled by surf lifeguards. On patrolled beaches, surf lifeguards put up yellow and red ﬂags. The area between the ﬂags is constantly monitored and is the safest place to swim at the beach. Lifeguards are there to help, so you should always listen to their advice. Recognising rips A rip is a strong current of water running out to sea. They can be very dangerous to swimmers as they can sweep you out to sea quickly and easily. To keep yourself safe, it is important to learn how to recognise rip currents. Typically they appear as calm patches of water with waves breaking on either side. Other useful tips • Never swim alone • If in doubt, stay out of the water • Know your limits • Read and obey the safety signs • Never swim or surf when tired or cold • Consider other people in the sea

The area close by a pool is often slippery – so walk, don’t run, around the pool. Always obey the pool’s safety rules and listen to the instructions of lifeguards. Play it safe. Depth can often be hard to judge, so avoid diving into a pool unless you know its deep enough, and remember to check for others before entering the water.

Respect rivers A basic understanding of rivers and a healthy respect for the power of moving water can help keep you safe. When swimming in a river, always check for hazards (such as ﬂoating timber) up and down stream and avoid pools that run out into a stretch of rapidly moving water. Never jump or dive into a river without being sure of what’s below the surface, to avoid spinal or head injuries. If you get caught in the current, don’t fight it, but head downstream to a suitable landing area.

Enjoying New Zealand’s sunshine New Zealand’s sun can be very hot between 11am and 4pm during summer, when the ultraviolet rays are fierce, and it doesn’t take long for skin to become burned. Here are some quick tips for staying safe in the sun: SLIP into a shirt — and SLIP into some shade, especially between 11am and 4pm. SLOP on some sunscreen before going outdoors. Use an SPF30+ broad-spectrum sunscreen. Wipe it on at least 15 minutes before going outdoors – use approximately one teaspoon of sunscreen for each arm and leg, your body and your face. Reapply every two hours, and also after physical activity, swimming or towel drying. SLAP on a hat with a brim or a cap with flaps. WRAP on a pair of sunglasses. Choose close-fitting, wrap-around glasses.

Take advantage of some of the amazing, and free walks available in Northland. The DOC website has a really great run-down of them all. 4. We love taking our vintage pop-top caravan out for long weekends over the summer and are really so spoilt with all of the amazing locations to camp here. Ask a local for their recommendations. 5. FIVE COMMON PROBLEMS when signing a sale and purchase agreement and how to avoid them

5. Getting legal advice before you sign is vital The above issues should demonstrate why it’s important to ask a lawyer or conveyancer to review the sale and purchase agreement before you sign it. It can be tempting for a seller to get carried away by the relief of ﬁnding a buyer, or for a buyer to be excited about having their offer accepted, but don’t rush into signing the sale and purchase agreement before making an appointment with your lawyer or conveyancer. It’s a good idea to choose a lawyer or conveyancer before you get to this point, so there are no delays. The agreement will include general obligations and conditions that you will need to meet. These may include things like access to the property, insurance details and what happens if either party fails to meet any of the conditions in the agreement. Your lawyer or conveyancer will explain these clauses to you. Your lawyer or conveyancer will also explain any conditions that the other party has included in the sale and purchase agreement. If buying or selling a home is like running a marathon, getting to the point of signing the sale and purchase agreement is like turning into the home straight. It may feel as if you’re nearly there – the end is in sight! But don’t relax yet. The sale and purchase agreement is likely to be one of the most important contracts you will ever sign, and there is a lot at stake. A mistake at this stage can be very expensive. What is a sale and purchase agreement? The sale and purchase agreement is a legally binding contract between a property buyer and seller. It sets out all the details, terms and conditions of the sale, including the price, any chattels sold with the property, whether the buyer needs to sell another property ﬁrst and the settlement date. The agreement provides both parties with certainty about what will happen when.

purchase agreement. When the date is locked in, it may be impossible to change because other events may be linked to it, for example, other property sales in the chain. If you want to negotiate a change to the settlement date, or any other aspect of the signed agreement, it may give the other party an opportunity to renegotiate other details in the agreement, including the price.

Experienced buyers and sellers may try to add clauses to the sale and purchase agreement that will allow them to cancel the agreement if they change their mind – especially if the other party is inexperienced. It’s important not to agree to additional clauses without legal advice. 3. Conditions Don’t rely on adding a condition to a sale and purchase agreement to give you a way out of an agreement if you change your mind about the sale. For example, if a buyer adds a condition that they need a satisfactory property report and the property inspector ﬁnds a problem, the seller may remedy that problem in which case the buyer must continue with the sale. 4. Settlement date Think carefully about the settlement date you are agreeing to before you sign the sale and
