When CaptainJames Cook sailedpast thePoorKnights Islandsand supposedly named theirseaward slopes blanketed in pohutukawabloomaftera popularpudding back home, one mighthavethoughtthe monthwas December.

Itwasn’t.ItwasNovember1769anda possiblereasonfortheearlyannual bloom,theeffectfromthewarmerwater temperature,explainedcrewmemberCraig asweheadedtowardtheseinternationally iconicislandslastmonth.

Wewerelucky,therewerestillrougepatches ofournativeChristmastreedottingtheislands whereoneofthecountry’slargestpohutukawa forestresides.ButCaptainCookwasn’tto know;thePoorKnightsPuddinghenamed themafterwasanEnglishversionofFrench toastwithjam.

Ithadbeenaroughtriptoreachthe islandsthisday–thinkthethreeK

roadhumpsbackinthe‘80s,timesonehour–andallpartoftheexcitingadventuretoreach ourdestination.

AlongwithCraig,werefellowDive!Tutukaka crewBrendanandKevin,whotookuspast thesecondlargestarchwayinthesouthern hemisphere,beforeweenteredtheworld’s largestseacave–Rikoriko.

Brendanexplainedthatthecaveis222,000 cubicmetresandnamedafterthedancing/ shimmeringlightwithin.Inhere,peculiarly, fernsgrowupsidedownfromtheroof,possibly

epicvenuetotheirbucketlist,weheadaround toparkupattheMiddleArchwhereweare goingtospendseveralhourssnorkelling, kayakingandpaddleboarding.

Convergingwarmwatercurrents,amicroclimateandthousandsofyearsofseparation fromthemainland24kmawayhaveresultedin auniquebiodiversityaboveandbelowwater, earningthePoorKnightsdesignatednatureand marinereserves.

Theconstantcurrentstreamingsouthfrom thetropicsbringswithit,tropicalvisitors,who ssthrough,stayseasonallyormakeit theirpermanenthome.Whilethewarmwaters supportmanytropicalvisitorswhosettleon efpermanentlylivinginharmonywith emperatefish,theIslandsare omevarieties,likethemantaray, humpbacksandturtles,whocarryonby. istingsubtropicalandtemperate ncludeover125speciesoffish sharingthisenvironment.Theshadyrecesses ofarchwaysandcavesoffercomforttospecies undatdepth,andactassafe uveniles.

kingfishswimsby,andloadsofgiantsnapper, interspersedwithbrightsparklyjewelsfloating inthecurrent(laterdiscoveredtobesparkly plankton).Itislikeamagicalunderwaterworld ofslowmotion,amidamplifiedvibrantscenery. Evenaftersurfacingforadebrief,wewere amazedatwhathadswamintorangebelowus duringourbriefabsence.

Soimmersedwerewe,that,beforewe knewit,timewasupandwewerehailedback totheboatwiththetootingofthehorn.Warm showerswereonoffer,alongwithhotdrinks–notthatwewerecold,followedbylunch.

Thenitwasoffroundthecornertocollect halfadozenscientistsperchedprecariouslyon theslopingrockswithatonofgear,whohad beennocturnallyresearchingthewildlifeonthe islandsfortheweek.

Scientistsareaselectfewgiven accesstotheislands.Atotalmarineand naturereserveof40years-andpendingWorld HeritageSite-theislandsarethe ancientvolcanosthateruptedint ‘RingofFire’,isolatingthemfromthemainland. Asaresult,specieshaveevolveddi withinsectsandplantsgrowinglar as“islandgigantism”.

Onthefewridgesandvalleys, blendof,includingrareandend animalsandinsectshaveevolvedandthrived, safefrommainlandpredators.Ico themisthetuatara,recognisedasthe onlysurvivingdinosaur.Thedramaticcli breath-takingsceneryholdthetragichis Māoritalethatissaidtohavetaken

Ahardplacetonavigateandwithnofresh watersource,theIslandswereonc to400peopleandpopulatedwithbustling terracedgardensandfortifiedpa OccupiedbyMāoriformanygener theearly19thcentury,bothmainislandsTawhitiRahiandAorangi-werei eachbyadifferenthapū(familytribalgroup).

TawhitiRahiwasoccupiedbymembers oftheNgātiwaitribewholivedontheisland seasonally,usingitasabasetocollectseafood andbirdsatabundanttimesoftheyear.They alsohadextensivegardensthatweretended onaregularbasis.Tomakethebestuseof theavailablesoilandwater,thegardenswere terracedbybuildingstonewalls,manyofwhich arestillintacttoday.

AorangiIslandwashometotheNgātiToki peoplewholivedthereonamorepermanent basis.Theyweremostlyself-sufficient,growing theirownvegetablesandharvestingthe plentifulkaimoana(seafood)fromtherich surroundingwaters.

Oralhistorysuggeststhatsometime around1820,awarriornamedTatua,whowas

TheinvadersreachedtheIslandsafter nightfalland,withnowarriorstodefend them,thelocalsweresoonoverwhelmed.Few survivedtheinvasion,manyjumpingtotheir deathsfromthehighcliffs,ratherthanbeing takenprisoner.

However,severalislanderswerecaptured, includingTatua’swifeOnehoandher daughter.MakinghiswaybacktoHokianga, ChiefWaikatoandhismenstoppedoffat Whangaroatorest.Whilethere,alocalchief recognisedOnehoasadistantrelativeand helpedherescapewithherdaughter.

Tatuamusthavebeenhorrifiedbythescene thatgreetedhimonhisreturntotheislands. Onlyafewpeoplehadsurvivedtheinvasion, includinghissonWehiwehi,whohadhiddenin

archaeologicalexpeditionstookplaceand effortsweremadetoexterminatethenow ‘wild’pigsthatwerecausingextensivedamage tothebushandthreateningthesurvivalof manyofthenativespecies.In1936,thepigs werefinallyeradicatedandtheislandswere lefttorecoverandflourishastheyoncedid, includingthePoorKnightsLily.In1975,reserve statuswasgrantedfortheprotectionofnative floraandfaunaand,whentheReservesAct of1977cameintoforce,theislandswere automaticallyclassifiedasanaturereserve,the highestformofprotectioninNewZealand.In 1981,theywereestablishedasNewZealand’s secondMarineReserveand,in1998,thePoor KnightswasgrantedfullMarineReservestatus, extending800metresoutfromanypartofthe islandsandassociatedislets,rocksandstacks.

Theyarenowacompletelypest-free environment,makingthemoneofthemost importantoffshorereservesinthecountryand providingasafehavenformanythreatened nativespecies,includingbothrareseaandland birds.Infact,betweenOctoberandMay,millions ofseabirdsflocktotheislandstobreed.

Headingbacktomainland,andafter identifyingthefishwe’dspottedunderwater fromabookproducedbythecrew,ourgaze turnedseawardtowardtheretreatingKnights withanewandmoreinsightfulappreciation. Withtheislandsslippingintothedistance, Kevinpointedoutthesilhouetteofahorizontal knightbecomingapparent–anothertheory behindthename.

Wemulledoverthetwoscenariosfora while,beforedecidingitwasallpartofthe mysteryandmysticoftheislands.

WhangāreiHeads

TheWhangāreiHeadsareaisrichinhistorywith stunningsceneryandenchantingplacestoexplore Ithasavarietyofdifferentextinctandweathered volcanoesthateruptedoveraperiodofaboutfour millionyearstoapproximately20millionyearsago and,asaresult,formationswereformedbelow.

LittleMunroBayhassomegoodexamples oftheseformationsandanotherfascinating formationisthenaturalwharfatTaurikuraBay. Mythsandlegendsaboundinthisarea,withone beingthatthenaturalvolcanicrockcauseway disappearingintotheseaisanunfinishedworkfor thegreatchiefManaiawhosewahinewasacross theharbour.Beforeitwasfinished,hehadtiredof herandthebridgewasnevercompleted.

TwogreatmaungasloomadjacentatWhangārei Headsandarepartoftheremainsoftheancient chainofvolcanos.Scatteredwithvolcanicrocks –bothsmallandlarge,MajesticMtManaiahasa lotofsteepstairsthatseemtogoonandonbut theviewatthetopisworthit-andyoudefinitely feellikeyou’veconqueredsomething.Themore inconspicuousMtAubreyiseasier-goingwithflat sectionsinbetweeninclinesandlook-outsalong theway.

Whicheveryouchose,thereareamplestunning beachestochoosefromforeitheraquietdipto cooldown,orafrolicinthesurf,anicecreamshop andevenawateringholenearby.

Kerikeri’scentrallocationmakesitperfectfor exploringtheBayofIslandsandtherestof NorthlandbutKerikeriitselfoozescharmand character.Anattractive,vibrantandprogressive town,richinhistory,itboaststhecountry’soldest woodenbuilding,KempHouse(1821)andtheoldest stonebuildingtheStoneStore(1832)bothsetonthe riversideamongstwalksandeateries.

TheOldPackhouseMarketsareopenSaturday andSunday.Northland’slargestmarket,aswellas

thehubwheremanylocalsconducttheirweekly catch-up,thereisawidevarietyoffreshproduce andediblesandstallsofjewellery,fudge,homemadesoaps,aswellason-sitecafes,artisanbakery anddelisellinglocalcheeses

Kerikeriisblessedwithauniqueriversystem incorporatinganabundanceinwaterfalls, includingthebreath-takingRainbowFalls,which eventuallyrunsouttoseaattheBayofIslandsvia theKerikeriBasin

TheParrotPlaceisaBirdDisplayandBreeding Centrewithapproximately300birds,including50

varietiesfromallovertheworld.Pathsleadthrough subtropicalgardenswithwaterfeaturesflankedwith bothopenandclosedaviaries.

Thecolourfularrayofexoticbirdsisasightto beholdwithmanyentertainingthevisitorswith theiranticsandcheekycalls.Thereisalsoalarge activityparkforkidsalongsidethecoffeekiosk ‘SweetTweets’.

ArohaIslandisa12hasanctuaryintheKerikeri inletlinkedtothemainlandviaacausewayabout 12kmnorth-eastfromKerikeri.Itisanaturalhaven withawidediversityofNewZealandplantsand

birds,includingtherareNorthIslandbrownkiwi. Visitorsarewelcomebydayortostayintherange ofaccommodationwhichincludestheArohaKiwi HolidayHome,beachorbushcampgroundsand cottageswheretheycanenjoyswimming,bush walkingandkiwispottinginpeaceandtranquillity AtnearbyWaipapaistheTeeTreeCaféGolf&Archery Rangewhere,setonbeautifully-manicuredand peacefulsurroundspunctuatedonlybyroostercalls, youcanwhileawaytimeaimingballsattargets.Kid anddog-friendly,thereisanadjoiningcafé,small animalfarmandlargechildren’splayarea.

WhaleBay and Matapouri

WhaleandMatapouriBayshavebeenrecognisedbytheLonelyPlanet guideasbeingamongthebestbeachesinNewZealand.

WhileMatapouricanbeaccessedbyroad,WhaleBaycanonly beaccessedbyfoot.Eitherparkatthetopofthehillatthecarpark onMatapouriRdandwalkdownthewell-maintainedbutsteepat times,track.Thiswillleadthroughgrovesofancientnativetreeswith spectacularviewsalongtheway,toidyllicwhitesandedbeach,greatfor picnics,snorkellingandswimming.
