Jodi Bryant visits thebustling new cookingfacility at WhangāreiBoys’ High School.

There’sadifferentkindofaroma waftingfromthenewvicinityof WhangāreiBoys’HighSchool (WBHS)andit’sonethathasn’t beenpresentheresincethe school’sestablishmentin1881.It’s thesmellofcookingand,forthefirsttimethat weknowofintheschool’s120-plus-yearhistory, it’sbeingofferedtoitsstudentsasasubject.

Steppingintothebrandspankingnew facilities,it’sallhustleandbustlewithboys attiredinsmartblackaprons,busyamongstthe gleamingbackdropofstainlesssteel,state-ofthe-artindustrialkitchenappliances.

WelcometotheYr11FoodTechclassof 2022.Outoftheactivitystepsthecharismatic andfamiliarfaceofPhilCalver,whohas taughtWhangāreistudentstocookforthe last15years.

“Goodmorning!”hebooms,beaming.

HeisjoinedbyteacherinchargeCraig Haymanand,today,theyareteachingtheboys tocreatestuffedpotatoes.

There’salottosqueezeintotheone-hour session–firstthere’sthedemo,thenthe practical,ifthey’relucky,amunch,theoryand, ofcourse,theclean-up,butit’sclearthisclassis undercontrolandit’salsoapparenttheseboys areheretolearn.

“Wetrytobringthemtoalevelsotheycan cooktheirfamilyamealathomeorgetajob inthefoodindustry,”explainsCraig.“Itendto lookatitcommerciallyandPhillikestoteach themhowtocookathome.”

Craig,achefhimself,turnedhishandto teachinghisskillatKamoHighSchoolfor18 years.There,hewasjoinedbyPhil,wherethey workedtogetherforadecadebeforePhiltook uptheroleofcookingteacheratWhangārei IntermediateSchool(WIS).Craigjoinedthe WBHSteamthree teacherandno newly-complete theWBHS$5m-plus

SaysPhil:“Iwasgoingtoretirebutthen theyknockedonmydoorandsaid,‘Phil!’.I alreadyknewmostofthestudents(fromnext dooratWIS),I’mhighschool-trainedsoitwas likecominghome.Itwasano-brainer.And Ilovetherole-reversal!”jokestheheadof department,shootingatwinklingglanceata chucklingCraig.

It’sclean-uptimefortheYr11’s–their potatoesarebaked,wrappedintinfoilandleft tocooluntiltomorrow’slesson,whentheywill bestuffingthemwiththeham,corn,onion, garlicandcheesefillingthey’veprepared.Soon thegashobsandbenchtopsarebacktotheir formergleamingstateandtheboysfileoutof theroom.

PhilandCraigstepnextdoorintothe adjoiningjuniorcookingfacilityastheYr9’s streamin.

“MorningMr!”It’sanamicablerelationship

“AwwitlooksalittlebrownMr,”quipsone boyafterPhilperformsthefinalflip,beforethey disengagetocreatetheirown.

Onceagain,theclassroomspringsto lifeanditisallgowithboyscrackingeggs, pickingouterrantpiecesofshell(stillhappens inadulthood),andproducingtheirown impressiveversionofgarnishedomelette.

Atthispoint,instepsprincipalKarenGilbertSmithwholaughsasoneboytypicallydrowns hisomeletteintomatosauce.

“It’sjustwonderfulwalkingaroundthe schooltothesmellofcooking,”shesays.“Last weekwasSamoanLanguageweeksothey producedSamoanfood,they’vemadesushi, tiramisuwithoutthealcohol,chickencurry–theboysweretakingithomeandit’sfabulous toseethemreallyenjoyingwhatthey’redoing.

“Ijustlovecomingdownherebecauseit’s greattoseetheboysreallyengagedinwhat they’redoing.CraigandPhilaresoenthusiastic aboutsharingtheirskillsandit’squiteuplifting tobearoundthemactually.”

Beforefoodtechwasavailableonsite,the onlyothercookingoptionwasforYr12students totraveltoNorthTectoundertakeahospitality course.FoodTechiscurrentlyofferedtoYr9,10 and11,whichwilleventuallyextendtoallyear levels.Over140Yr9studentshavesignedup tolearntocookoverthetwosemesterssinceit began,asimilaramountofYr10’sandalmost 100Yr11students.

“It’samazingtobeabletohavethefacilities here.It’sstartedwithahissandaroarand beenhugelypopularandthat’sreallyexciting seetheboysexcitedaboutcooking. lovingitandthefacilityitselfisamazing te-of-the-artandeverythingthey

Withtherollnowsittingataround 1300,WBHShadvastlyoutgrown itsundersizeandoutdated buildingssothe80percentrebuildtookplaceonthelowerfieldsbeginning May2020forminimumdisruption,agoodcall consideringthelengthyCovid-induceddelays.

The$50mbudgethadalsoincreaseddueto Covid-inflictedbuildingpricehikes.

Althoughtheschoollosttwoofitsfour playingfieldsforthenewbuildings,theygained anewonebyclearingandflatteningwasteland nexttothecycletrackonthepremises. Demolitionoftheformerschoolbuildingshas begun,withdecisionsyettobefinalisedabout howthelandwouldbeutilised,thoughKaren says“excitingstuffisinthepipeline”.

“WBHSwasestablishedin1881combined withWhangāreiGirls’Highschoolandthenthe schoolsweresplitsoithasbeeninterestingto reflectontheendofaneraand,whentheOld

Boyscomeandhavealook,nothingwillbe familiarexceptwhat’sinthemuseum.”

Asmuchhistoryaspossiblehasbeen preserved;aswellasthegymnasiums,the formerperformingartsblock,whichistheoldest buildingonsite,hasbeenretainedtobecome themuseumhousingtrophiesandteamsports photographsofpastpupilswhichonceadorned theschoolhall.Thehonoursboardsgracethe newauditorium,alongwiththeformerand newschoolanchoremblemdesignstoshow howtheyhaveevolved.Thekauribeamsinthe libraryhavebeensalvagedbeforedemolition,

alongwithrimufloorboardsfromthehall.In addition,timberfromthetreesremovedtomake wayforthenewbridgetothenewentranceoff WesternHillsDrive/StateHighway1wasused tobuildatabletoholdthe3Dmodelofthenew build.Muralspaintedonthebrickbuildings demolishedcouldn'tbesalvagedsohavebeen photographedandaddedtothedigitalfiles.

“Weseeitasanopportunitytobringallthe bestaspectsandmaybeleavebehindsome ofthethingsthatdon’tserveuswellinthese moderntimes.”

Thenewbuildhas46teachingspaces includingclassroomsandbreakoutspaces wherestudentscanworkinsmallgroups, anengineeringacademy,library,cafeteria, auditoriumandmarae.

“Themasterplanisfor1600-that’san additionalblockwhenwegettothatlevel but,atthemoment,wefitandthespacesare workingwellandonceit’sfinished,Ithinkit’s goingtobeprettyamazing.”

Thefinaltouches–thehorticulturearea, astroturfandlandscaping–wereduefor completionattheendofterm.

“I’mreallypleasedthatit’scomeoutthe wayweplannedittolookandfeelandthe functionalityoftheteachingspacesiswhat we’veexpected.There’sarealpositivesense aroundthewaywewanttoteachandarenow abletoteach.I’mreallythrilledandIcouldn’t behappier.

“Theboyshaveembracedthenewschool reallypositively.Mostboysaregoingtotry andfindawaytobreakthingsbutthebriefwe gavethearchitectisthefacilityhastoreally be‘boy-proof’.Afterthefirstcoupleofdays,it waslikewe’vebeenhereforever.Wewillwait untilthewholeplaceisfinishedtoaskthe boys’feedbackbut,anecdotally,they’rereally enjoyingit–somesaiditfeelslikeuniversity,so that’sreallylovely.”

When Paul Sumich noticed that Covidrestrictions were havinganeffectoncommunity fundraisingevents, theideaof TheUnity Syndicatewas born.

“Ifelttherewasawaytobeabletogivea moresignificantamounttoselectedgroupsin onehit,thatwouldinstantlytransformtheir outcome,byusingthepowerofmanyand formingasyndicate,”Paulsays.

Paul’sideatoraiseatotal$23,000ayear wasnotrandom.Whenhismotherpassedaway in2012aftera12-yearbattlewithcancer,he workedoutthatshehadbeenalivefor23,115 days,whichinspiredhistargettotal.

TheUnitySyndicateaimstogettothe grassrootsleveloffundraising,andissetupso themembersgettoseethebenefitsoftheir contributions.Thefundsaregiventothegroups attwoeventseachyear.Ateachevent,the applicantsareaskedtospeakforfiveminutes abouttheirgoalbeforethememberstakeavote.

“Thegreatthingisthatthesyndicate membersvoteonthenightsonobodyknows whothefinalrecipientsaregoingtobe.Itis reallyquitepowerfulbecauseit'srealandit's

rawandit'shappeningrightinfrontofyou,” Paulsays.

Buttherearenolosers,justawinneranda biggerwinner.

ThepastmonthatHihiauaCultural Centrewehavebeencelebrating thebeginningoftheMāorinewyear, signaledintheNorthbytherisingof Puanga(Rigel).Puangaisatimefor ourcommunitiestoreflecton,healfrom,and closetheyearthathasbeen,andwehavedone thatwithabanghereatHihiaua.

Thespacehasbeenbuzzingwithactivity fromtheManaWahineFestivaltotheAhunga Nui-AhungaRoaHakarievent,aswellastwo

exhibitions-‘PUANGA’,amultimediagroup exhibitionand‘Rehua’byDinaTiareMcLeod. Bothexhibitionswillbeonshowuntilmid-July andshowcasetheamazingindigenousandlocal talentwehavehereintheNorth.

Wehavealsohostedworkshopsaroundthe preparationandpreservationoftraditional Māorifoods,Māoriconceptsinartdesignand practice,andthelaunchofboththeOhoand AtaeducationresourcefromtheMinistryof Education,andtheTeKawaWaioraResearch

Report.Ateachoftheseworkshopsand eventswehavebeenremindedoftheamazing communityspiritabundanthereinWhangārei, andthehungerforknowledgeandconnections tomakegoodthingshappen.

WealsohaveaprototypeofanAtamiraKai onpublicdisplayatthemoment,commissioned byTuruturuaUta-TuruturuaTaiTrustfortheir Hakarieventandbuiltbyworkersandcarvers ofHihiauaundertheguidanceoftohunga whakairoTeWarihiHetaraka.TheAtamirawas

astructuretraditionallyusedhereinthemidnorthtostoreandpresentfoodforlargeevents andhakari(feasts)duringthePuanga-Matariki season.Thereisevidenceoftraditionalatamira beingupto30metreshighandtwomileslong, stackedwithmanytonnesoffood.TheAtamira prototypewecurrentlyhaveondisplaywas bornfromanaspirationofmaramatakaexpert RereataMakihawhowantstoseethestructures andpracticesthatgowithitreintroducedinto modernsociety.

FortheeventatHihiauathismonththe Atamirawasoverflowingwithharakekefood basketsfilledwithkumarafromHokianga, watercressfromWhatatiri,andmanyother locallygrownandharvesteddelicacies. Eachguestalsobroughtajarorbottleof homemadepreservestogifttoanother, makingitwhatoneofthebuilderstermed “theMāoriChristmastree”.

Everyyear,myselfandagroupofguys fromaroundNewZealandmeetupfor ourQueen’sBirthdayannualfishingtrip. WealwaysheadNorthtoMahinepuanear WhangaroaHarbour.Thistraditionhasbeen goingstrongfornineyearsnow.Aswegetolder, thestoriesbecomealittlelessbelievable,the bedtimesalittleearlierandtheseaconditions needtobemorefavourablethannot.

Eachyearwefishforatrophy.Thewinner ofthepreviousyearmakestherulesforthe followingyear.Thisyearwasthefirstyearin alongtimethatweactuallyhadafavourable forecast.Therulesthisyearwerethatyouhad tocatchafishtoenter,andoncethatfishwas caught,nooneelsecouldusethatfishtoenter. Onceentered,itwasmostsnapperover50cm overtheweekend,anyfishcaughtbeforeentry doesn’tcount.Fishingonthreedifferentboats, weusemessengertokeepup-to-datewithwho hadenteredwithwhatandallsnappersover 50hadtobemeasuredandphotographed(as mostlargefishwherereleased).

putbacktogetbiggerandgivesomeoneelse thebuzzthatwegot.Thisyearitdidn’tseem tomatterifwewerestrayliningin8mwithbig burleyordriftingsoft-baiting,thesnappers wereonthechew.Afterthefirstday,onlyfive oftheeightofushadenteredwithadifferent species,andpoormateJeremystillwasn’t competingwhenthelastfishwasmeasured. Ourbiggestsnapperthisyearwas78cmand 19.6lbs,justshyofthemagical20.Other highlightswerea21kgkingfishcaughtonasoft baitrod(1hour15fighttime),a23kgKingfish speared,andfilming5-610lbsnappersinour burleytrailofftherocks.

Inourgroup,wehavesomekeenfishoswho getouteverychanceweget,whileforothers thisistheironlyfishingtripfortheyear.Weall lookincredibleforwardtothisweekendand thestoriesoflastyear’stalesstartweeksout andthisyear’scontinueweeksafter.Itisaway tostayconnectedwithmatesfromdifferent timesinourlives.Mostofusarenowmarried withkids,butwebookthistripinayearin advance.Thesedays,everyoneseemstobe gettingbusierandbusier-beingbusyhas

becomeabadgeofhonour.Forme,thistrip keepsmymentalhealthoncheck.Icomeback hometothefamilyhappyandrefreshed(well atleastmentallyrefreshed,sleepseemstobe optionalattimes),Iheadbacktoworkwith greatstories,mostofthemtrue,andthiswill keepmegoinguntilnexttime.

Sizeshouldn’tmatter,orsotheysay, butinthiscase,itreallydoes!The magnificentsundialinWhangārei’s TownBasinisreputedlythelargestinthe southernhemispherewithitsgnomon, orrod,stretching22mintotheair.Butit’s notonlyitssizethatisimpressive,italso hasaningeniousdesignthatallowsitto beadjustedforDaylightSaving.Stopby theTownBasinandseeifyoucanfigure outhowthisisdoneandwhyithastwo setsofthenumeralssixandseven.The staffatClaphamsNationalClock Museumwillhappilyhelpprovidethe answers,buthere’soneclue–weenjoy longdaylighthoursintheNorth.

Home renovation activity andspend have reached thehighestrates reported since 2019,according to the annualHouzz &Homesurvey of nearly 700New Zealand respondentsfromleading platform forhome renovation anddesign, Houzz.

Nearlyhalfofhomeownersrenovated theirhomesin2021(48percent), upfrom41percentin2020. Followingthe13percentgrowthin medianspendlastyear,homeownersreport anadditional31percentjumpinmedian renovationspendat$23,500.Homeownerswith higherbudgetprojects(thetop10percentof spend)investedupto$140,000in2021.

Homerenovationactivitycontinues into2022,withnearlyhalfofhomeowners planningtorenovate(46percent)andnearly two-fifthsplanningtodecorate(38percent) thisyear.Homeownersreportaplanned medianrenovationspendat$17,500for2022. Interestinglyforthefirsttimesince2019, homeownerswithhigher-budgetrenovations (thetop10percentofspend)plannedspend

investingintheirhomesdespiteheightened productandmaterialcostsdrivenbysupply chaindisruptions,andareexploringdiverse fundingsources,”saidTonyBeen,Managing DirectorofHouzzAustralia&NewZealand.

Cashfromsavingsremainsthemost significantsourceforfundingrenovationprojects (81percent),however,homeownersfinancing renovationprojectswithcreditcardsthatcanbe usedanywheregainedthreepercentagepoints (16percent).Morethanoneintenhomeowners fundedtheirrenovationprojectsthroughcash fromaprevioussaleorrefinancingin2021(13 percentand12percentrespectively).

Demandforhomeprofessionals

Morethanfourinfivehomeownerssought helpfromprofessionalsfortheirrenovations in2021(83percent).Homeownersreliedmost heavilyontheexpertiseofspecialtyservice providerssuchaselectricians(53percent)and plumbers(45percent)fortheirprojects.That said,builders(30percent)werethemosthired

professionalsinconstructionanddesignrelatedservices.Interestingly,tileandstone professionalssawasignificant12percentjump in2021comparedwith2020(25percentand13 percent,respectively).

Switchingupinteriors

Investmentsininteriorroomsremained thepriorityforsevenintenrenovating homeownersin2021(71percent).Kitchens areboththemostpopularinteriorroomto beupgradedandtheroomthatcommanded thehighestspendat$30,000.Kitchenssawan increaseinspendof50percentcomparedwith 2020($20,000).Interiorroomsthatsawthe mostdramaticincreaseinpopularityfromthe previousyearincludedprimarybathrooms(23 percent),living/familyroom(22percent)and diningrooms(19percent).
