OUR PEOPLE

Tackling life’s hurdles

with positive mindset BY JODI BRYANT

Rebecca Dixon’s journey has been a tumultuous one. But the courageous 45-year-old has a knack for dusting herself off before ploughing ahead and creating positives from the negatives.

D

espite being academic, the ‘bored and mischievous’ teen successfully ‘pestered’ her parents to allow her to leave school in the fifth form – a decision she later regretted. At 16, she was the victim of a potential date rape after her drink was spiked at a night club in Whangarei. Paralytic, she was abducted, taken to an alleyway and assaulted but, after a security light came on, she was taken to another alley and, beginning to regain consciousness, the feisty teen put up a raucous fight, which drew the attention of passers-by. Around 18 months later, she was pregnant and after the decision was made to adopt the baby out, sent to Auckland to await the birth. However, after the birth, Rebecca and her partner couldn’t follow through. “The whole way through the pregnancy I had told myself that she wasn’t mine and that I was just the incubator so it was an extremely difficult and emotional time when the nurses tried to make me bond with and nurse her,” Rebecca recalls. “There was a ‘cooling off’ period before you sign your rights away so we were without her for about three weeks. It wasn’t until I walked out the hospital doors that I completely broke

down. We were overwhelmingly heartbroken. We went back to our tiny Auckland flat and tried to carry on for a couple of weeks while I recovered but we just couldn’t do it. Her father and I were fortunate enough to get her back in time but I’ve often wondered if that was selfish of us considering we were only teenagers and an older couple could’ve provided her with the upbringing she deserved.” By then the court case had come around for her ordeal more than two years earlier so, leaving her six-week-old with her father in the court waiting room, Rebecca went through the arduous process of facing her assailant. “Victim Support was seriously lacking back then. The whole court process was extremely traumatising and I was portrayed as the instigator; that I encouraged the attack and deserved what happened to me because I was somewhere I shouldn’t have been. I was not his only victim. When he was jailed, I carried tremendous guilt because he had a wife and a newborn too and I was the cause of him 4 | SAVVY

leaving his family. Eventually I came to realise that it wasn’t my fault, that I didn’t cause his actions and decent people don’t behave that way.” The relationship with her daughter’s father dissolved and she met her husband-to-be, having another daughter together and running a business. However, the marriage became extremely unhealthy and volatile and, during this time, Rebecca abused alcohol to cope, hitting rock bottom. “It wasn’t a good situation and I just knew, with two daughters, I had to get out so they didn’t grow up thinking that kind of relationship was normal.” A tumble down a flight of concrete stairs resulted in a ruptured disc – later to become the bane of her life. Following her divorce, Rebecca moved north to Whangarei, knowing no one, and deciding to start afresh, enrolled at then-named Northland Polytechnic to finish high school. “It wasn’t my intellect that was the problem at high school – circumstances forced me to grow up too quickly and I couldn’t relate to the teenage life of my peers,” she explains. “Leaving school early came round to bite me on the butt and returning to study was very humbling. I had a child at school and a threeyear-old I’d put in day care and I just made it work.” After completing high school qualifications, she underwent training to become a chartered accountant, and, although suffering a lot of pain, had several caudal epidurals to keep her going. The, then, seven-year degree took ten because of ‘life events, spinal surgeries and being a single mum raising teenage daughters without family nearby’. She also met her current husband of 12 years and blended their families. Rebecca’s training and subsequent work spanned 14 years before her past caught up putting her career on hold as a chartered accountant. “I was suffering a lot of pain daily but I continued to put my clients and job first, which was foolish in hindsight. I battled on too long and ended up with nerve damage so, in the end, I had to resign. It was silly but, like most women, we just keep going. I’ve learnt to prioritise my needs now.” After spinal surgeries in 2000 and 2004, she had a ‘really good 10 years’ when she took on the likes of half marathons, caving, Tongariro crossing, mud runs and obstacle courses. Then, suffering through a couple of ‘really bad years’ lead her to see a surgeon who booked surgery for the following week. This was followed by four further surgeries, one in which she was delivered via

ambulance. Rebecca’s surgeries have included four discectomies with the removal of the collapsed disc, decompressions to relieve pressure on the spinal cord and nerves and three complex fusions. Unfortunately, the last fusion has not yet been successful and she now faces a complex fusion revision. A complex fusion is conducted after a damaged disc has been removed and replaced with spacer material, before ‘welding’ the vertebrae via a bone graft. Rebecca’s hip bone was used in the hope the bone would fuse, thereby allowing the removal of the screws if necessary. However, recent results show the bone graft hasn’t fused and she has a fractured screw. Now it’s a wait to find out if she needs to have her eighth surgery and the biggest to date, which would involve entering through the side of her stomach. “I’m preying that this doesn’t happen,” says the optimist. “But, in the meantime, I’m getting as fit and as healthy as I can because recovery is very demanding. My back muscles are weaker from being cut through multiple times and my body is exhausted so the best thing I can do is come prepared.” And by preparation, she means getting up at 4.40am for 6am starts at CrossFit where Rebecca is a permanent fixture with her smile and positive attitude. The keen gym bunny is more active now than she ever was and has often helped friends and family with training and nutritional advice acquired from years of experience. She now plans to gain the qualifications and further

knowledge required by studying recreational sport/health science, which will allow her to help and train other pain patients, especially those suffering back injuries. “Significant injury and chronic pain hijack your life. Pain medications take your personality, your lifestyle, relationships, goals and dreams. Chronic pain is exhausting and isolating. It changes brain/body chemistry which you have no control over. However, I do have control over my healing, how I approach my recovery or surgery preparation. “I got into fitness because of my injury and decided to take a holistic approach,” Rebecca explains. “I had a couple of options: one was to give up and take meds for the rest of my life and the other was to learn how to live in this body now. I’m incredibly grateful for all the support I’ve received and how amazing and strong my body and mind is.”

New

ARRIVALS

There are low days when the pain is worse and “I’ll be on bed rest with a hot water bottle feeling a little sorry for myself and, in those cases, I’ll need to take all my medication. “I just want to get on with things. I’ve never been an overly patient person, but I’ve had to learn patience so I’m going to use this time to study. This will mean coming off pain medication to reduce detrimental effects on my brain. It’s frustrating not being able to operate at my previous levels. Pain medication has a profound effect on intellect so, until I can function at the level required for my previous position, I’d like to try and study to become a physical trainer/health coach. “I always had people, including strangers, come up to me and share sensitive life stories. They just need someone to listen with compassion, empathy and without any judgement. We both leave the conversation

feeling valuable and more connected. I find that very heeling and it’s another distraction from pain.” Rebecca’s gym peers have become family, she says, and “everyone is going through their own challenges, pushing themselves to be stronger in every way and boxing on to get those endorphins. “The family culture, unlimited support, loud music, challenging workouts and cheeky, somewhat un-PC banter, are what makes Barbell Jungle CrossFit my favourite place for recovery. Going there significantly helps me with mental and physical health – strong body equals strong mind!” Rebecca’s daughters are now 26 and 21, the oldest a student of scientist focusing on cancer research and the youngest has studied law and owns her own home with her fiancé. “I’d be up until the early hours studying most of their lives. My girls made huge sacrifices so I could study and provide us with a secure future. I’m beyond proud of my girls. By seeing everything I’ve achieved and talking to them frankly about my mistakes and teaching them to be independent and compassionate, I know they have the tools to do well in life. I’m very blessed that my children have grown up to become amazing adults. Watching them make better life decisions than I did makes everything we’ve been through as a family unit worth it. “It’s never too late to change your circumstances for the better.”

WHANGAREI

Monthly Clean Up BY JODI BRYANT

What do tea pots, pigs’ skulls, dolls and beach umbrellas have in common? Well not a lot, except these are some of the many random items sneaky Whangarei residents have been disposing of in our hidden public areas.

L

ove Whangarei Monthly Clean Up is an event carried out by a group of volunteers, driven by F.O.R.C.E (For Our Real Clean Environment) who set out each month to clean up a selected area around Northland. Since its inception 16 months ago, almost 200 volunteers have collected 9,160kg of rubbish from 19 locations. Longtime Whangarei residents Nicolas Connop and partner Karen Lee are behind F.O.R.C.E and both are passionate enough about keeping their environment clean they decided to make a difference. “Growing up in Onerahi, I loved the whole place - the beaches, the bush, our little big city and all the interesting tucked away gems,” says Nick. “I’ve always had an interest in the nature around us and have tried to look after it as best I can. “It’s really disappointing to see so much rubbish out there. It is bad enough as it is with the issues regarding recycling and waste, let alone people just throwing it into the environment. It affects so many animals and, in turn, affects us too. Somebody has to do something. We’re not just complaining about it, we’re doing something about it.” The pair began the Love Whangarei Monthly

Clean Ups in February last year, which steadily accrued volunteers and sponsorship, before forming F.O.R.C.E. - a charitable trust which aims to empower the Whangarei district community to protect the natural environment through environmental and waste minimisation projects. Says Karen: “I started the clean-ups because I wanted to see less talk and more action on the issues that face our environment. Picking up rubbish is something everyone can do and it makes a big difference to the environment, animals and, in turn, us.” The targeted areas are often neglected and hidden and, so far, the clean-ups have included areas such as Otangarei, Onerahi Beach and Lookout, Waipu Walkabout, Mackesy Rd, Dragonfly Springs and Ngunguru Snell Point mangroves. The clean-up sometimes involves planting in conjunction with themed weeks such as Keep NZ Beautiful Week with voluntary teams comprising both locals and even overseas visitors working in collaboration with council and various organisations, supporters and sponsors. In certain locations, it’s not unusual for the team to fill the back of a truck with half a tonne of rubbish – which gets weighed at ReSort with the disposal paid for by Whangarei District Council (WDC) - during the two hours of their event. And says Nick, you’d be surprised at what

Nick and Karen

A packet of Salt and Vinegar chips with an expiry date of 1994

some of our locals are dumping. “There’s the usual car tyres – we find a lot of them – and car parts, washing machines and driers, bikes, food packaging, tvs, computers, microwaves, beds and mattresses, but we’ve also had some rare finds … a working watch, full wallet, a china dog, bags of undersized paua …” They’ve also unearthed three vials of used needles during the Mackesy Rd clean-up, marina pole mooring floats, disposed bundles of papers and pamphlets from two years ago and a number 36 letter box. Then there’s been couches and chairs, heaters, an anchor, bike helmets, strollers, road cones, nerf bullets, a Buzz Light Year action figure, tennis and golf balls, large batteries,

a hot water cylinder, dolls, a bbq plate, spade, pocket knife, a scanner, lawn mowers, underwear, a clothesline, exercise equipment, swimming pools, a myriad of dead animals, kitchenware and even a toilet arrow sign. And let’s not forget the 1980s bottles of coke, Fanta and L&P, plus the faded salt and vinegar chip packet still intact 24 years after its contents expired, which made headlines last year. “If you just put it in the environment it’s just going to sit there,” Nick said after the discovery. “Although plastic bags are often found, we generally find more in the way of products like chip and biscuit packets, packaging, such as polystyrene and plastic wrap and an astounding amount of bottles.” A fair amount of detective work is carried out too: “If we find details in the rubbish dumped, we report it back to WDC to follow up. And if we find property that has been lost of potentially stolen and disposed of, I try to get in contact with the owner or take it to the police,” says Nick, adding that he never names and shames over social media. The next event is cleaning up the Parihaka summit on June 8. “With the new local (Sport Northland Parihaka Trail Run/Walk) fun run event happening around here the following day, we think it would be a great idea to put in a bit of mahi and clean up the place and find those hidden cavities that are hidden in the bush.” Adds Karen: “It makes us so sad to see the amount of rubbish dumped on this special maunga. So, with Matariki approaching and the new trail run the next day, we thought this was the perfect time for another clean-up.

For details of the event and further information on the Love Whangarei Monthly Clean Ups, go to: www.force.org.nz or the For Our Real Clean Environment Facebook page.

Ways to relax into your holiday Winter is coming in New Zealand and it is the best time to arrange for an overseas holiday – especially somewhere warm and sunny. Here are a few tips and tricks to help ease travel stress on your next getaway.

T

he stress of travel is enough to make you wonder if the getaway is worth it. Alice Boyes, who travels about one week out of every month, knows how trying the process can be. ‘’There’s a lot to remember with travel,’’ says Boyes, a former clinical psychologist and author of The Anxiety Toolkit. ‘’The days leading up to getting away, you have everything you’ve got to remember for your actual trip, but also you’ve got huge amounts of work stuff to get filed away before you can leave.’’ Her advice: ‘’Find a comfortable routine.’’ In doing so, control what you can, plan ahead where you’re able and be prepared to handle the rest, whatever it may be. Boyes shares tips on how to reduce stress and anxiety when it comes to planning, packing and, finally, traveling.

1. Think of your schedule Don’t just consider cost. It’s tempting to book a trip based solely on airfare. (Have you seen those cheap tickets to Europe?) But in the name of stress reduction, consider your own schedule first. Do you tend to get busy with work at the end of the month or the end of the quarter? Schedule around those days so you can minimise stress and worry. Also, determine how much downtime you need when you come back from your trip. 2. Create lists Think about what’s causing stress and make a list for each area. (Work list, travel-planning list, and so on.) Boyes also creates a ‘master packing list’ for winter and for summer. She comes back to this checklist time and again. ‘’You don’t have to reinvent the wheel each time you go away,’’ she says. The summer list, for example, reminds her to turn off the air conditioning and put chlorine in the pool.

3. Minimise holiday tasks ahead of time Visualise where you’re headed and think about what you can do in advance to cut down on things to do on the road, such as getting cash out ahead of time or buying tickets online. Choosing the right bag/backpack can take as much thought and planning as a hike in backcountry. You need to consider size, features, and fit, not to mention antitheft security for a bit of extra peace of mind.

4. Keep a suitcase packed Rather than repacking toiletries every time, Boyes keeps duplicates of items she uses frequently, such as her toothbrush and toothpaste. She places one in a suitcase and keeps one at home. She also keeps clothing in her suitcase that she knows she will wear on the road. This allows her to put less time and energy into preparing the night before when she’s usually still working late.

$239.90

5. Enjoy your downtime At the airport and on the flight, it’s easy to succumb to stress. You’re thinking about your connecting flight, checking whether your flight is delayed, responding to frenzied work emails. Boyes suggests giving yourself permission to savour the downtime. Listen to music or a podcast or read a book. If you’re feeling anxious, she says, take some deep breaths and allow yourself to just be in the moment. 6. Give yourself plenty of time before — and after — your flight The airlines generally recommend getting to the airport no later than two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight. Everyone’s tolerance for waiting is different. Boyes prefers to get to the airport early to make it through security and have time to take a deep breath in the lounge, and does the same thing coming home.

As winter rolls around, it's the perf rfect f ctt excuse to invest in a coat that does all the work for your winter wardrobe. Your every ryday y winter coat has to serv rve v a variety of functions - it has to look good, even when the rest of your outfit doesn’t; it has to keep you warm; and it has to last, ideally, for more than one season. Shop a great range of coats at Polwart rth t Design - team it with a pair of black tights or jeans to see you through to spring!

For a great wardrobe, it’s all about jackets, but for an outstanding wardrobe, it’s about coats.

A

s winter twists it’s icy fingers into our lives, they are what we reach for. Jackets first, for that extra layer, insulating light weight separates with style, but, as the chill intensifies, it’s coats we seek. Sleek or bulky, oversized or flared, coats, not only protect us from the offensive winter elements, they are an outfit on their own. Buttoned or belted, flowing or cinched, they are a designer’s dream; sophisticated, yet creating a glorious hint of drama to make winter inviting. Sabatini has always created designer master pieces and has a great track record with coats. Predominantly New Zealand-made using natural fibres, their long line ‘New Yorker’ sweeping blazer coat is distinctive, in cinnamon with welt pockets and two feature buttons in merino. This classic-styled coat will last the test of time and is an absolute show-stopper. For the carefree dresser, Sabatini’s pinstripe longline merino coat with the notched collar and fold-back sleeves in beige, khaki or navy, is an uncomplicated wear in the heart of winter. With a lightness that fits our Northland extremes, it can take you to the rugby, the office or dinner with panache.

Zaffina, a label designed in Mount Manganui and made in China, offers you a fitted wool blend coat this year. Falling just below the knee, this double-breasted revere collared number in cinnamon, navy, forest and black is a great essential for everyday work wear or weekend shopping splurges. A great classic. Australian label Chalet’s wool blend ankle-length coat is a standout. In bold lime or neutral oatmeal, it buttons offcentre creating a line so simple and edgy it reeks New York catwalk. In casual contrast, unbuttoning reveals oversized centred lapels and deep patch pockets that demand to be filled with attitude. Those icy fingers of winter will wreak havoc on our balmy autumn days before we know it, so be prepared. Take the plunge and wrap up this year in a designer masterpiece that works for you. “Winter is coming Jon Snow!” Game of Thrones has ended, as has summer, and we’re all looking for winter skin tips to take care of our complexions until the sun dances merrily back into to our world come spring. Facials are having a major moment nationally for men and women. New Zealanders have more of a desire than ever to look and feel great. e This month my treatment started with a double sh cleanse and hydration toner which smells soo fresh and includes grapeseed and cucumber. This was followed by a divine pomegranate fruit enzyme mask nd which does an extraordinary job of pore refining and brightening. Something new I’ve not experienced yett was the Collagen Sound Wave Infusion which gets to work as a personalised concentrate in a hydration base. The whole experience is topped off with a fabulous soothing mask massage. I pranced out of Caci Whangarei with my ’glow on’. We create stronger mindsets and confidence when we know we have our ‘glow on’. When your confidence goes beyond skin deep, you have more energy, you’re happy and that’s attractive at any age.

WELL BEING

“Why does my skin still feel dry, no matter how much moisturiser I put on?”

I

t starts with the acid mantle which is the skin’s first line of barrier defence. The acid mantle is made up of sebum (oil) secreted by the sebaceous gland and sweat secreted by the

sudoriferous (sweat) gland. Combined they form a slightly acidic film with a very fine layer of the skin’s natural oil on the skin’s surface which act to keep bad bacteria in check and maintain hydration. If the natural oil gets stripped, we find the skin dry and dehydrated.

In my consultation, I ask the following questions to help determine the cause(s) of forever dry skin: 1. Do you use a cleansing gel or soap that lathers or foams? This foaming effect often leaves the skin squeaky clean and many of us like it because we think it’s a sign of a deep cleanse but, in reality, we are stripping the skin of its natural oil, leaving the skin taut and dry. Without the protective natural oil, skin suffers from trans-epidermal water loss and, no matter how much you drink, water continues to evaporate. 2. Do you use a toner that contains alcohol or is astringent? This also strips the skin’s natural oil. 3. Do you use a moisturiser that contains emulsifiers? Emulsifiers are agents needed to bind water and oil to make an emulsion with a nice consistency. Emulsifiers can also strip the skin’s natural oil by binding to it causing a ‘washout effect’. 4. Does your diet include a lot of essential fatty acids contained in oily fish, avocado and olives? If not, do you take omega 3 supplements? Not enough healthy fats in the diet can contribute to the skin’s lack of lipids which then cause dehydration.

Guiltless Boundaries BY SARAH TRASS

• Private Coaching • Group Coaching • Teen Coaching • Workshops & Events I will help you put in place the steps that enable you to show up everyday as the best version of yourself.

Growing up, we weren’t taught much about boundaries. In fact, most of us were made to feel that to be the perfect student, partner, parent, child, friend, employee etc… we had to put others’ needs above our own, and that prioritising ourselves was indulgent. Due to these lack of boundaries, we try to be everything to everyone, and we stretch ourselves too thin. We become exhausted, rundown, and eventually resentful. So, let’s get the story straight… boundaries are a must-have if we want to live a healthy, happy, and engaged life. Boundaries aren’t selfish or indulgent, they are an act of respect for yourself and others. When you have the courage to stand by your own boundaries, you communicate that you value your own worth and wellbeing and can commit to showing up 100 per cent for yourself and others. Contrary to what we think, when we live by our boundaries, everything in life benefits – we have a deeper connection and understanding of ourselves and we give more fully to our relationships and work. How do we create boundaries? Creating boundaries starts with giving yourself the permission to tune in and listen to your inner needs and desires, and asking what needs to happen for you to honour these? At times this may feel uncomfortable such as recognising when to keep pushing and when you need to stop, saying no to a great opportunity when it’s not the

5. Do you work in an office with airconditioning? Do you sleep with the heat pump on? Have you been sitting close to the fire? All of these will draw moisture from the skin like a dehumidifier! 6. What medication are you taking? Certain meds affect the skin’s barrier defence by altering its balance, therefore affecting its function in holding moisture. 7. What’s your age? Unfortunately, everything slows down when we age, including our ability to make sebum. Lack of sebum/ oil means lipid dryness which leads to dehydration. If you are doing everything correctly and still suffer from dry, sensitive, irritated skin, then please seek advice from a skin therapist as healthy skin should be thick, supple and a little dewy. Your skin therapist should also be able to help you identify ingredients in your products that could be having a negative effect on your skin barrier.

right fit, reaching out and asking for support, or saying what you feel instead of what someone wants to hear. Honouring boundaries can be tough. Yet staying true to them doesn’t make you any less loving, responsible, understanding, or reliable - it’s what’s needed for you to genuinely be all of these things and show up as the best version of yourself which everyone deserves to experience. Some questions you can reflect on, to start exploring your boundaries are: • Where am I feeling guilty, or holding on to resentment in my life? What could these be attached to, and how might setting boundaries help me let go? • Where in my life am I prioritising others’ needs and happiness at the expense of my own? What needs to happen here to value and prioritise my needs and wellbeing? • What’s one thing I can commit to starting this week? Do you find yourself feeling guilty when you say no, or that you’re busy looking after everyone else but yourself? If so, book your free 30-minute consultation in today and see how coaching can support you in creating boundaries, and a life you love.

Exercise Motivation…

Build Yourself an Exercise ‘Reward Pathway’ Many people wonder how to find the elusive motivation to exercise and eat healthy. What and where is this special motivation thing you need to get yourself out of bed and out the door to your workouts?

I

f we sit and wait for that burst of motivation, when someday we will wake up and finally feel the desire to exercise, we may be disappointed. The fact is it’s something we create for ourselves, something we build and strengthen, not something we wait for. The good news is that within just 10 minutes of starting an exercise session, your brain chemistry changes in a positive way. This unique chemical transaction means dopamine is secreted making you feel fantastic, strong and accomplished. This dopamine release is called a ‘reward pathway’ which means the more you do something to release this feel-good chemical, the more you desire to do that thing. Rewarding yourself with that little surge of dopamine is an important part of a positive ‘self-perpetuating feedback loop’. When you feel good it can be a highly-motivating factor when cementing a fitness regime permanently in your life. You could think of this concept like receiving compound interest on a deposit in the bank. Around it goes – the better you feel, the more you want to feel better. And the better you feel, the better choices you also make with your activity levels, your food choices, the better you sleep and the better you cope with stress and so on. The cycle continues with one thing supporting and strengthening the other, creating a positive upward spiral which leads to the best possible life. Research shows that regular exercise boosts mood, reduces anxiety and depression and provides all sorts of emotional, spiritual and biochemical benefits that make us feel, think and perform better in our daily lives. This mental or emotional rejuvenation makes us more comfortable in our body and leads to greater peace of mind. The quickest and easiest way to succeed at fitness is to create a positive feedback loop which includes experiencing enough results to continue to motivate you to keep going.

BY CAROLYN HANSEN ANYTIME FITNESS, WHANGAREI

PERPETUATING HEALTH LOOP The cycle continues with one thing supporting and strengthening the other, creating a positive upward spiral which leads to the best possible life. So, in itself, your fitness program becomes its own reward. This model is the same as a business that must become profitable to survive. You must create this self-perpetuating feedback loop to stick to a healthy lifestyle. There is no substitute. If you have previously struggled with maintaining a fitness regimen, it doesn’t mean that you are unmotivated or weak-willed. It simply means that the self-perpetuating loop was not in place or there was a breakdown somewhere in its creation. The perceived outlay of effort, time or money for exercising was too high, not enough rewards accumulated, or progress wasn’t measured. Both life satisfaction and health and fitness satisfaction are made up of hundreds of small individual steps, each one building on the others. It’s never just one set of instant happy outcomes. Each time you exercise, you confirm that you are making your personal health and fitness a priority. Sure, looking great is a terrific bonus for active people. But for many, fitness satisfaction and success is not defined by one’s physical appearance. It’s not uncommon for those who initially

choose to get started simply to look better or lose weight to discover that the real key to satisfaction lies in how they feel about themselves and their fitness regime. At best, a commitment to exercise, fitness and physical activity is a reflection of your values about self-care, health, and integrity. And like true beauty, fitness satisfaction radiates from inside. Try it and see for yourself how this strategy works a treat for ‘effortless’ motivation.

Myths related to eyes

07

Using wetting drops cures dry eyes. Dry eyes are a chronic condition in which one of the causes is the oil gland does not make normal oils. Using wetting drops will certainly make the eyes feel better but will not solve the problem.

Did you grow up being told that eating carrots would improve your eyesight? Turns out, it was a myth and one of many.

01

Eating carrots will improve your eyes Carrots are rich in vitamin A, which is important for a healthy diet. But eating carrots, even by the bushel, will not improve your eyesight.

02

Reading in the dark will damage your eyes. Using your eyes in dim light does not damage them. For centuries, all night-time reading and sewing was done by candlelight or with gas or kerosene lamps. Good lighting does make reading easier and prevents eye fatigue and possible headaches.

03

Sitting too close to the TV will hurt your eyes. It is not uncommon for kids to sit too close to the TV simply to become more engaged in it, not really to see it better. There is no truth to the myth that our eyes will weaken as a result.

04

Wearing glasses all the time will weaken your eyes. Wearing eyeglasses does not make our eyes worse. Some eye conditions (like nearsightedness) will worsen with time, but that has nothing to do with glasses. What glasses can do, though, is ‘spoil’ our vision, so the

08

next time you forget them, it feels like your eyes are much worse, but it is really that you are just missing the glasses.

Not everyone gets cataracts. A cataract is the clouding of the natural human lens. The first symptom of the aging of our eyes that will ultimately lead to cataract formation is the need for reading glasses in our 40s. So, if we live long enough, we will all get cataracts.

05

09

Using the computer a lot can weaken your eyes. Like sitting too close to the TV, using a computer for a long period of time will certainly cause eye fatigue, but not create near-sightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism. Computers will not harm your eyes. Often, when using a computer for long periods of time, or when reading or doing other close work, you blink less often than usual. This reduced rate of blinking makes your eyes dry, which may lead to the feeling of eyestrain or fatigue. Take regular breaks, look up or across the room and consider the use of artificial tears. Looking at objects further away usually relieves the strain on your eyes. If your vision blurs or your eyes tire easily, you should have your eyes examined by an ophthalmologist.

06

Wearing someone else’s glasses can weaken your eyes. Wearing a prescription that is not the correct one for you can cause eye strain and fatigue but will not cause any eye damage.

ARE OUR FOCUS

FOR ALL DISEASES OF THE EYE

Wearing over the counter (OTC) reading glasses will weaken your eyes. While OTC reading glasses are not the most stylish or well-made glasses, the price is certainly right. Our reading worsens because we are aging, not because of the quality of the reading glasses we are wearing. Even if you get OTC readers anyone from 40 -45 onwards should start getting eye checks with your optometrist.

10

Eye exams are not necessary unless you are having an eye

problem. False. There are many silent enemies of the eyes – glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy, to name but a few – that only a routine eye examination can pick up. We recommend an eye exam every two years for people under 65 and yearly when over 65. Wearing the wrong kind of glasses hurts your eyes. False. Eyeglasses are devices to improve your vision. While the correct glasses or contacts help you to see clearly, wearing a

pair with the wrong lenses, or not wearing glasses at all, will not physically damage your eyes. However, children less than eight years old who need eyeglasses should wear their own prescription to prevent the possibility of amblyopia or ‘lazy eye’.

12

If you cross your eyes, they’ll stay that way. Contrary to the old saying, eyes will not stay that way if you cross them. A child whose eyes are misaligned may develop poor vision in one eye because the brain will ‘turn off’ or ignore the image from the misaligned or ‘lazy eye.’ The unused or misaligned eye will not develop good vision unless it is forced to work, usually by patching the stronger eye, or using eye drops, or glasses. Some children require surgery. If your child is crossing one eye constantly, schedule an evaluation by an ophthalmologist

13

If parents have poor eyesight, their kids will inherit that trait. Unfortunately, this one is sometimes true. If you need glasses for good vision or have developed an eye condition (such as cataracts), your kids might inherit that same trait. Discuss your family’s visual history with your doctor.

14

Two blue-eyed parents can’t produce a child with brown eyes. Two blue-eyed parents can have a child with brown eyes, although it’s very rare. Likewise, two brown-eyed parents can have a child with blue eyes, although this is also uncommon.

15

Only boys can be colour-blind. It’s estimated that up to eight per cent of boys have some degree of colour blindness, whereas less than one per cent of girls do.

PACKARD MOTOR MUSEUM – VEHICLE OF THE MONTH

1940 Chevrolet Command Truck (C60L) BY GERALDINE CRAW

Visitors to the Packard Motor Museum often remark on the variety of exhibits and motor vehicles we have. Our collection of military transport vehicles adds to this diversity. One of the most interesting is the C60L Chevrolet Command Truck. These right-hand drive trucks, either Ford or GMC, were built to British Army specifications and made in large numbers by factories in Canada. They were referred to as Canadian Military Pattern trucks (CMP’s) but the Australians and New Zealanders commonly called the trucks a ‘Chev Blitz’.

The Canadian automotive industry provided a major part of the British Empire’s military vehicles, especially during the second world war. Trucks, such as the C60L, were sent as far away as Australia and New Zealand. One reason why Canada became instrumental in the manufacture of military vehicles was there were reduced levies on Canadian-produced goods sold to other countries in the British Commonwealth. Both Ford and GMC took advantage of this situation. The trucks were designed to carry military

maps, radio sets, food supplies (stores) or set up as a mobile dentist or ambulance, among other uses. They were fitted with removable generator charging sets driven off the truck’s PTO, as well as roof aerials. Some trucks were fitted out to work

in the artic or be used in winter conditions. Trucks sent to New Zealand arrived as a cab and chassis and the New Zealand army attached their own body. Our truck is a command/telecommunications (wireless) truck and would have been used as a mobile office out in the field. The C60L was fitted with a 6 cylinder, 85 hp, overhead valve Chevrolet engine. Our truck is in unrestored condition but is a unique piece of New Zealand history.

Fishing tips & tales with John Vowless First a couple of tips: Currents can make a came home with a good snapper feed and they big difference. In harbours, incoming tide is caught some very big kahawai. usually the most productive. Savvy editor, Jodi, daughter Jayla, and Outgoing tide is usually productive also friends walked to Smugglers Cove and fished but not as good as incoming. At the top and off the beach. They also caught and released bottom of the tide when there is no current, some undersized snapper but came home with fishing is often slow. When fishing outside a good snapper feed. They fished late in the harbours in deeper water, currents still make day at this beautiful spot, watched the sun go a difference. If you are fishing a new spot and down and really enjoyed the changing view as have a good day, take note of current direction, tide height and moon phase – combined, they have a big effect on fish behaviour. We are heading into winter; water temperatures are dropping and snapper will be hard to find in the harbour. However, there is still plenty of good fishing to be had. Recently, Frank Chandler drift-fished using slow jigs. He drifted in 50 metres of water near the Chicken Islands and had a good day catching snapper, trevally and gurnard. I’ve mentioned this before; if the sounder shows fish and baits aren’t working, try lures and softbaits, they are often very effective. Kathy Whiting and friend went fishing outside Whangarei Harbour very recently, A Nice Easter Snapper caught and released a few smaller snapper but

light faded. An awesome, special day. AJ lives and fishes mostly in the Tutukaka area and along our coastline. He kayaks, boat or rock fishes and reports good results recently boat fishing out of Oakura and rock fishing, particularly in the early morning darkness, catching good eating-sized snapper and good-sized kahawai. Living in Whangarei, we are very lucky to

be able to enjoy the magic and accessibility of our beautiful harbour and coastline and great fishing and diving. Don’t put your fishing gear away over winter - you may not catch as many snapper, but often the ones you do catch will be bigger. There will be kingfish, trevally, kahawai, gurnard and those delicious terakihi, all available through the colder months. Tight Lines.

Creative Northland proudly supported Techweek NZ for the third year in a row by sponsoring creative individuals and organisations to host capability building workshops and inspiring presentations. Techweek is New Zealand’s annual festival of innovation, running nationwide from May 20-26. ‘StrandMap’ was a free collaborative workshop between Creative Northland and AwhiWorld (Dr Maggie Buxton and Kim Newall) held on Wednesday, May 22. The focus of this workshop was to build the capacity and capability of the ‘Creative Technology Northland’ group in Projection Mapping. This is a technology that turns differently shaped objects (including buildings) into display surfaces for projecting 2 or 3D video content. The workshops aim was to build capacity among creatives in Northland so that in the future they can engage in festivals and events using this technology to project their work. The event was hosted at ‘StrandLab’ at popup research and innovation space situated in the Whangarei CBD. Strandlab is a joint venture between AwhiWorld, the Northland Chamber of Commerce and Mahuta Digital designed to activate the CBD and build capacity for crossdisciplinary practice. The workshop was very successful with a total of 16 people attending to learn more about this area of technology. Creative Northland and

THE MATHEMATICS BEHIND YOUR LIVING ROOM Decorating your home is as simple as choosing a Resene paint colour for the walls, plonking some furniture down and making sure there’s enough light in the space, right?

Not quite - while decorating your living space doesn’t need to be a complicated affair, some thought about specific placement of your furniture can go a long way. No matter what aesthetic you go for, considering the mathematics behind your living room can be a very beneficial exercise. Why a numbers game? To very, very loosely paraphrase George Orwell, all living rooms are equal, but some are more equal than others. Some living spaces are particularly expansive, while others are pressed for space (though they’re homely nevertheless). It’s not just size that changes between properties living room shapes can differ massively. Some areas will be conventional and rectangular, while others will have unique angles, nooks and the like. However, rather than seeing unique room shapes as a hindrance, instead look to embrace interesting angles and alcoves.

Before taking inspiration from home decorating ideas and completing shaking up your living room, grab a tape measure and get an idea of what kind of dimensions you’re working with. There’s no point investing in a lavish new sofa if its size is going to dwarf a room. Likewise, adding too many pieces of small furniture to a large, open-plan space could look equally odd. Don’t just think about the width and length of the home - be sure to consider a room’s height, too. The more vertical space you have to grapple with, the greater the opportunities from smart overhead storage solutions. However, you’ll also need to pick drapes and paint colours carefully, depending on your living room’s ceiling height.

When you’ve got these measurements under your belt, you’ll find investing in furniture, rugs and artwork is much easier. Define your space Once you’ve established your living room’s dimensions, you can move onto the colour palette and furniture arrangement. If you want to create the impression of space, opt for shades like Resene Thorndon Cream or Resene Merino for the walls. If you’ve got a particularly low stud, consider embracing two similar neutral hues, with the deeper shade taking up the lower two-thirds of the wall and the lighter shade taking up the upper third. This will give the impression of a more elongated space.

Floor-to-ceiling drapes will also elongate a space, while blinds confined to the perimeter of your windows are a smart move for oversized living zones. In smaller areas, opt for a single sofa, which can help create a focal point in the room without overwhelming the area. If you want to create separate zones within a large, open-plan space, consider investing in a sectional sofa. The L-shape will completely redefine an area, so you can have an entertainment space with a television and sound system in one corner of the room and a dining area in another. When it comes to pieces such as coffee tables, make sure their size is in proportion

to couches and chairs in terms of diameter. If you’ve got a small living room, whether due to a small stud or limited floor space, consider opting for a low coffee table in order to balance out the feel of the room. You can also use rugs to give the impression of a more spacious room or to create pockets of interest. For instance, a long rug can create a sense of intimacy, particularly if you place the front legs of couches and chairs on it, as well as a coffee table in the centre. Several smaller rugs are a good option if you want to create individual areas within a larger space, but make sure their total surface area doesn’t take up more the one-third to half of the room’s total floor space.

HAVING PERFECTLY MINIMAL HOUSES Alex Badham, Designer and co-owner of www.gathered.nz

H

ave you ever wondered what it would be like to live in one of those perfectly minimal houses? With photogenic bare shelves and no shoes cluttering the doorsteps? Or with a pantry organized into matching jars and alphabetacized spices? Nope. Me either. And, I’m fairly certain that those shots you see on Instagram or in magazines are framed perfectly to hide the necessary clutter that living involves. It’s just the truth that running a home and a family, plus a dog or two, takes ‘stuff’. Sports gear, baby gear, spare lightbulbs, the list is basically endless. So how do we keep all of this clutter to a minimum? Storage, baby. As much as you edit your possessions to only what you use and love, you inevitably need somewhere to put it all. If you have the luxury of a newer home, fingers crossed you have enough storage for all the bits and pieces you need. However, clever

uses of storage as well as simple daily tricks can make a little storage space go a long way. Here are some ways we are using our storage space smarter at the Gathered home. In the bedroom, maximize precious wardrobe real estate by incorporating a capsule wardrobe system. This way you, cannot only save money on your clothing budget but, use less space too. If you don’t know what a capsule wardrobe is, look it up, it will change your life. Bathroom storage can be improved by adding some clear plastic drawer separators to sort your cosmetics from your toothbrushes. Seems simple but this has been a game changer for us as we all share one bathroom at home. Each of the kids has a section and

the rest is well sorted and easy to find. I am a huge fan of storing things in the kids’ rooms into baskets. They are easy to move around, relatively inexpensive, easy for the kids to tidy themselves and fit basically everything in them. Toys, dirty washing, shoes can all be stored in belly baskets and pushed under the bed or stacked into cube shelving. Baskets are easy to label with swing tags and look great in any room décor. In the kitchen, we make an effort to keep our benchtops as clutter-free as we can, but also suffer from the stack of papers piled on the bench that require attention. We have tried to make it a part of our routine to file important documents as soon as they come

in in a concertina file and to recycle or bin any that aren’t necessary to keep. Working on it. The garage is a whole new ball game and one that I admit we struggle with at home. I dream about a garage with a clear floor, tidy shelves with all our camping gear and workshop neatly organized but the reality is that we have a double garage full of firewood, lawnmowers, old footballs, surfboards and dodgy mismatched screwdrivers. Will keep you updated on this one. What are some of your storage tips and tricks, I would love to hear them! See us @gatheredstore on Instagram and Facebook. Until next time.

REA

DO I NEED TO TELL POTENTIAL BUYERS EVERYTHING ABOUT MY PROPERTY?

Recent research by the Real Estate Authority (REA) has shown that many people have a very relaxed approach to being honest when they’re selling a property.

S

ome people justify not coming clean about everything because they think the onus is on the buyer to do their homework, or that if they can get away with it then it’s ok not to tell the full truth. “People tell themselves this behaviour is ok because they believe that successfully selling their property is the only thing that matters,” says REA chief executive Kevin Lampen-Smith. “The need to sell, and to get a good price, is often seen as a higher priority than the need to be completely honest.” Lampen-Smith says sellers thought that full disclosure would have an impact on whether the sale would go through.

“One respondent said they didn’t want to open up any potential problems and that they were completely selfish about it,” he says. “They were concerned that being honest about any problems with the property would mean that no one would want to buy it.” If, like most New Zealanders, you are selling with a licensed real estate agent, they will play an important role in this process. “When you sign an agency agreement (the legally binding document that sets out the contract between you and the real estate agency) you are asked to disclose or be honest about any known defects,” Lampen-Smith says. “If you tell the agent about a significant

BUYING

problem with a property but ask them not to tell anyone else, they may need to cancel the agreement and walk away.” Lampen-Smith says that when you’re talking to an agent about selling the property, the best course of action is to tell them everything you know about the property, no matter how small you think it is. “They’re the experts and their professional reputation is at stake if they mislead a buyer. If you’re still not sure what to disclose, the real test is to put yourself in a potential buyer’s shoes. If you were the buyer, would you want to know about unconsented building work, potential leaks or unstable ground?” In an ideal world, every potential buyer will do all the necessary research about a property (Lampen-Smith suggests visiting settled.govt. nz for more advice). The consequences of not doing so are very real. Selling a property is stressful enough without adding in the threat of the sale being cancelled or of possible legal action further down the track.

SELLING

“At best, any serious problems will be uncovered by due diligence and you’ll look like a bit of a fool, but the buyer will either walk away or begin negotiations that take these defects into account,” Lampen-Smith says. “At worst, if the sale goes through and the buyer then discovers that they’ve been sold a lemon, you may end up in the Disputes Tribunal or engaged in more serious court action.” Neither scenario will leave you feeling very positive about the experience and has the potential to have a negative impact on your future. If you’re upfront with your real estate agent about everything (and you talk to council about getting any additions or alterations certified), you’ll be on a surer footing when it comes to negotiating with potential buyers further down the track. It might seem unfashionable in the era of fake news, but honesty is always the best policy. For independent guidance and information on buying or selling, check out settled.govt.nz.

he Raglan plan, which is part of their Coastal Classic range, has this in mind and can be viewed at their Great North Rd, Kamo site. The response has been ‘amazing’, since its completion in December, says senior home consultant Malcolm Ford. “Those that have been through say it’s a clever, open-plan design. A lot of people want to replace the bach and this plan has been modified by our Whangarei team based on two years of feedback from people coming through our homes.”

Although modern, the team have kept features of the typical kiwi bach, such as the mono-pitch roof and floor-to-ceiling cupboards, maximising space. Customers can also add their own finishing touches to the 115sqm Linea Oblique model to make it feel more like their own kiwi bach. While the old-style bachs often had one bathroom and a cluster of bedrooms at the end, customers are impressed with this plan’s large master bedroom, walk in wardrobe and ensuite, which can be shut off from the openplan living area and with the bedrooms and bathroom to the other side.

The kitchen boasts a large waterfall island with overhanging breakfast bar and some of its many features include a Lazy Susan, waste master, dish washer provisioning and LED lighting. Keith Hay Homes is New Zealand’s pioneer of transportable homes and at 8m wide, although this model is larger than the usual transportable size, the team are still perfectly able to build it off-site and transport to the dream spot. Explains Malcolm: “Transportables are up to 6.6m wide and so this plan includes a 1.5m jut-out, which can be built on-site.” Whether it’s urban, rural or coastal, the team have transported homes as far as the Far North Hokianga, Mangawhai, Pataua North and Whangarei Heads. Although customers have the option of having their home or bach built onsite, the benefits of off-site include quality control, minimal disruption to neighbours, smaller carbon footprint, minimal impact to customer’s land, cost-efficiency and quick build times. Keith Hay pioneered the transportable housing market when, in the late 1940s, he won a tender to relocate an American army camp from the Auckland Domain to Panmure by using the novel method of shifting the buildings in large sections instead of dismantling them.

New Zealand’s desperate housing shortage after the war provided an opening for an innovative approach; constructing houses in a central assembly yard and then transporting them to suburban locations. Keith Hay was an innovator in the development of house shifting trailers and winches on rubber-tyred tractors. Today, Keith Hay Homes is still proudly a family-owned and operated company and, last year, celebrated 80 years of building homes designed by New Zealanders for New Zealanders. Over the years, the range has grown to encompass a large selection of new generation adaptable home plans, especially created for New Zealand’s environmental conditions and lifestyle. All plans can be modified and mirror-imaged to maximise the sun and view on your property. Optional extras, such as decks, verandas and garaging solutions can also be added. INTRODUCING MODERN FINISHES

BRINGING QUALITY

TO THE SURFACE

We are excited to announce that Whangarei Furniture Coating has been rebranded to Modern Finishes.

O

ur new name reflects our core business providing you with quality modern finishes. Modern Finishes is locally-owned by Kevin and Sam Boyd and has been for the last five years. We are located at 45 Kaka Street, Morningside, Whangarei. Modern Finishes provides painted, stained and clear finishes to kitchens, vanities, bar tops, commercial fit-outs, doors, furniture new and existing, in fact we can paint just about anything. Kevin is a qualified furniture finisher with over 30 years in the painting industry. Kitchens are our main focus, both new and existing. For many people, a new kitchen is on

the wish list. However, due to cost, that’s often where it stays, but you don’t have to stay with drab and dated. A repainted kitchen can give an amazing lift to your home at a fraction of the price of a new kitchen. We love repainting kitchens as this is a great option to bring sustainability into your life reusing what’s already there, but making

it fresh, vibrant and adding your personal touch. Painted kitchens offer you any colour, any size and any shape, we aren’t limited to set shapes and sizes as laminates and thermowraps can be limiting. Durability is provided by the two-pack systems we use which is the same technology as car paints. Painting protects the timber by

encapsulating the item, preventing moisture from getting in. But what if you already have a thermowrapped or laminate kitchen? No problem, we have paint systems to provide adhesion to these coverings, so you don’t have to live with someone else’s colour choice. If you do want to make cabinetry changes, we work with some fantastic local cabinet makers. Bench tops can also be changed at this time. Handles are also an easy option for a fresh look. We work with local tradesmen to take out and refit your kitchen, or if you prefer, this can be DIY. So, what’s the process? We will come and do a free no-obligation quote and discuss options. For repainting and handle changes, it’s usually about two and a half weeks from drab to fab. Modern Finishes bringing quality to the surface.

Make your kitchen standout whether it’s new or old we can give it a great finish that you’ll love. We provide painted, stained and clear finishes to:

Why your bathroom should be just as relaxing as your lounge The once function-focused bathroom has transformed into the most relaxing space in the house.

N

ow, we’re not about to suggest you host your next dinner party in your bathroom. But, over the years, the bathroom — once a mainly functional space — has become increasingly important as a place to spend time in beyond a quick hose-down in the shower and a scrub of the teeth. Today, it’s a place where you can retreat, relax, perform rituals that nourish your skin and hair, read, think and even chat with a loved one. As part of that transition, the materials,

forms, colours and textures used in bathrooms have started to move closer to those found in spaces like the lounge and kitchen. Where white ceramic tiles and practical materials such as linoleum once dominated, more tactile textures like wood, stone and water-resistant plaster now give a softer finish. Colours, too, have gone darker, with deep greys, greens, and even black, creating a more enveloping and restful space. The traditional chrome taps are being replaced with brushed or coloured finishes, and visually softer

5

WAYS TO TRANSFORM YOUR BATHROOM INTO A RELAXING SPACE

materials like brass and copper. 1. Deepen The Colour Scheme Walls are where they always start in a room concept, as the colour sets the mood. People don’t actually enjoy being in a sterilelooking bathroom anymore. All the whites, clean, clinical — that’s not what people want anymore. 2. Choose Sculptural Fittings Taps, showerheads and mixers have come a long way in the last few years. Aside from improvements in the water flow rates to conserve water without loss of pressure, the

forms and materials available are becoming more sculptural and refined. 3. A Bath You Can Relax In A place you can sit or lie down, relax, read a magazine, have a glass of wine — you could be talking about your sofa, or you could be talking about your bath. Either way, they’re places that need to be supremely comfortable without compromising on looks. Freestanding baths tend to have more flexibility in their shape, making them more comfortable. And they don’t need to be gigantic — slipper baths have one end higher than the other, giving excellent neck and back support. 4. Don’t Be Afraid to Decorate Bathroom decor can go well beyond a couple of scented candles and a pretty bottle of handwash. Plants are an ideal addition to the bathroom — tropical flowering plants like orchids, bromeliads and peace lilies thrive in the humidity of a bathroom, while shade-loving plants like snake plants, string of pearls, bamboo, sword fern or ivy will bring a lush feel to lower-light bathrooms. Vessel basins, that sit atop a vanity, can give the same effect as a glass, metal or ceramic serving bowl displayed on a sideboard. And adding a stool to the room serves a practical as well as a decorative purpose. 5. Add Luxurious Soft Textures Bathrooms require a lot of hard, waterresistant surfaces, so bringing in some softer textures gives them a more liveable feel. Many of the newer types of towels available are more texturally interesting than traditional cotton loop. Turkish towels are thin, large towels, often with a subtle striped weave pattern that are quick-drying and look great hung on hooks. Waffle-weave towels have a throw-like texture and Kontex Japanese towels are woven slowly on a weaving machine until they have a softness that’s more like wool or cashmere than cotton.

BUILDING A NEW HOME

Q&A with

Dean McGonagle, Platinum Homes Northland

Dean McGonagle is the owner of Platinum Homes Northland and has been involved in every aspect of the building trade from small renovations and additions, large coastal homes, light and heavy commercial. Dean particularly enjoys the residential build side of the industry as it entails dealing directly with the homeowner while working towards achieving their desired build in a designed partnership process.

Q: What quality control measures should a building company have in place? A: Quality control is simply a process that should be automatic. There are two obvious results from a robust quality control system – firstly you get the comfort that throughout the build somebody is watching over your home and making sure all is correct and accurate and following the code, secondly it means that when your home is handed over and the processes around a good quality audit have been completed, your home will last for a life time. Ask your builder or building company to show you their quality audits and checklists. This is your fundamental right to know how your investment will be handled. Each company will have a dedicated person who takes care of the quality control and, at times, you may be involved in some decision-making. Q: How do you make sure the actual team under the company owner have the skills necessary to put a new home together – what experience do they have? A: This is simply about credibility and the building company should be falling over themselves to provide this detail. This is where more and more trust is earned. What specific role does each person do in the process of building your new home from design to construction? The question about skill and experience levels can also be attached to the reference checking you will perform when choosing the right builder. I would also ask the company to produce a profile on each manager the company has

RECAP FROM LAST MONTH’S Q&A Hi everybody, a quick recap from last month’s article where we discussed guarantees, legislated documentation, communication timelines etc. When choosing the builder you want to build your new home, it is important to remember to use the correct steps in how you go about making your final selection. The questions to ask during this process are in relation to the guarantees the company has in place to protect your investment – not just the deposit, but a guarantee to complete and then structural and minor defect guarantees. These are a minimum

that will be involved in the building of your new home. Asking questions like, how long have they worked for the particular building company, how long have they been associated with the industry itself? Big or small, somebody will be covering a role in the process. In small companies maybe one person does several roles. That’s fine but it is still important to ask for the information. Q: How do I make sure I am getting what I asked for? A: It is very important that you read everything in your contract and go over your plans with a ‘fine-tooth comb’, so to speak. You should

requirement every building company should have. Top of the list should be independent guarantees where the builder cannot ‘circle the wagons’ to protect themselves. These independent guarantees are all about the home and the homeowner. Next was to look at their reputation by asking for references, then speak to them about their processes around communication, timelines and a step-by-step guide to how they run their entire process to completion. Remember this is a large investment and we all need to respect it as so.

also be handed a complete specification sheet of the products going into your home. If you struggle to understand your drawings and specifications, then ask the building company to go over them and explain in detail. Believe me, this is important as it lowers the risk of getting something you didn’t ask for or something missed that you wanted. Doing this will lower the level of regrets. It is also a good exercise because you become more familiar with your home and it really starts to get exciting when you better understand your drawings – it starts to become tangible and a real home.

Q: How transparent is the quotation/ specifications? A: These should be very detailed and very transparent. It is normal to have allowances in the costing structure. If there is not because of it being a fixed price contract, then look for and understand the ‘exclusions’. Tags are where something is left out of a contract due to a lack of information on the plans or more common where the inability to see what is under the ground and cannot be seen. The specifications must match the plans and the disclosure documentation provided so there is continuity of information flowing through your new home build. Ask if the allowances are based on best estimates or has there been a quote requested to help build the allowance figure. I believe that estimates/quotes should be requested so that the allowance in the contract is as close as it can be to reality.

In July’s edition, Dean will explain: • What you should ask when you see allowances in your contract • When you should make your personal choice selections – carpet, kitchen, electrical, etc • If you are allowed to visit the site once construction is underway • If you are able to make changes once the plans are finished • And much more...

Sleep tips

FOR ADULTS Good quality sleep is essential for your health and wellbeing.

It is important for healthy brain function and emotional wellbeing, physical health, energy and appetite regulation, healing and repair, immune system function, productivity, work performance and safety. Not sleeping enough, or sleeping badly, can affect your reaction times, increasing the risk of accidents around the home, at work, out and about and on the road. Researchers have also linked lack of sleep to depression, suicide and risk-taking behaviour, increased blood sugar levels, obesity, heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and stroke. WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR SLEEP: Bedtime routine • Maintain a regular sleep pattern by going to bed and getting up at around the same time each day, including on the weekends. • Relax and unwind before bed. Try to spend the last hour you’re awake doing calming activities like reading, having a shower or bath or doing mindfulness activities. • Don’t watch the clock or stay in bed when you’re wide awake. If you are still awake after 20–30 minutes of trying to get to sleep, try sitting in another room reading for a short time. • Avoid sleeping pills unless your doctor or pharmacist recommends them. You should only use sleeping pills in the short term, or occasionally. Sleeping environment • Keep your bedroom conducive for sleeping. Remove distractions like televisions and portable electronic devices from the room. • Keep the bedroom quiet and dark, at a comfortable temperature. This is different for everyone, but generally falls within the range of 15–20°C. Make sure your bedding is comfortable too.

During the day • Keep active. Moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity is best, but even light activity during the day can help you sleep better at night. Try to avoid a lot of activity just before bedtime. • Alcohol, caffeine and cigarettes can disrupt your sleep. Try to avoid these and avoid eating large meals within two-three hours of going to bed. • Daytime naps can affect your night-time sleep. Keep your daytime naps short (less than 30 minutes). Napping in front of TV in the evening will make it harder for you to get to sleep. • Getting sunlight in the morning and avoiding bright lights in the evening can help your body to get into a better sleep routine. If you work night shifts You may find it hard to get enough sleep during the day. In this case: • Try wearing dark sunglasses to reduce the sunlight on your commute home. • Keep to the same daily routine if you can. • Use ear plugs and eye masks to reduce noise and light in your bedroom. • Use blackout curtains or put boards over the windows in your bedroom to block out sunlight. • Avoid caffeinated drinks and food, and avoid alcohol close to bedtime. • Having short naps can help. See your doctor if you: • Have persistent trouble sleeping and the recommendations set out here aren’t helping. • Wake a lot during the night. • Consistently feel very tired during the day. • Have trouble staying awake during the daytime. • Snore severely.

36 years

1983 style, 36 years ago. Computers were big - so big they needed their own office. Mobile phones were clunky – a brick with its own suitcase. Portable music systems were so unwieldy they required a shoulder ride. Should we discuss hair and shoulder pads?

It’s no surprise then that interior design was, ‘by comparison’, rather subtle and minimalist. Somewhere to take the weight off. The look was calm, cosy and un-cluttered. No more 70s psycho swirls in orange. Macramé hangers and cane peacock chairs made way for polyester velour rolled arm couches in browns and greens complemented with chintz and pastels.

Interior design during an era of relative subtlety is harder to master than an era of extravagance so it is with great respect that we honour the birth of Frazerhurst Curtains and Blinds, 36 years ago, in 1983.

Today we see trends in interior design take reference from past eras. The latest trends for interiors, for example, have some roots in the 80s.

O

ur suppliers are showing us samples with colours and textures reflecting nature’s raw materials in their natural state. Gritty textures, unfussy design, organic shapes and lines in a palette of warm yellows, greens, taupe and chocolate offset with mineral tones. Once again, an era of calm, cosy and un-cluttered. Frazerhurst showroom consultants Tracey, Karen and the team would like to invite you to celebrate 36 years of being a locally-owned business while being inspired by the latest trends.
